Video by @jim_abernethy // I decided to show you some of the smaller sharks from Tiger Beach...the beautiful Caribbean Reef Sharks! This species used to be the most common species at shark dives in the Caribbean, prior to 1998, when I forged a new path for shark diving by starting the world's first Large Predatory Cage-Less Shark encounters! My intention was for conservation reasons! I desperately wanted to save them! I focused in on some of the sharks I grew up with in Palm Beach County Florida...Tiger, Great Hammerhead, Bull, Oceanic White Tip and Lemon! My plan was to show the world what I already knew and wanted to fight the huge misconception that people had of sharks! I knew if they knew what I had learned by swimming with them all the time, they wouldn't think I was crazy and stupid! I received a gauntlet of arrows as the pathfinder in this endeavor mostly from other shark dive operators that are now trying to replicate what I do! I'm so glad they learned the truth! NO SPECIES OF SHARK TARGETS OR EATS HUMANS! I'm still fighting this misconception as we still have producers and cameramen that would rather perpetuate the misinformation than tell the truth, which would really help stop the war on sharks! I'm very grateful for all of your help spreading the truth my tagging your friends so people will fall in love with these magnificent creatures and help save them! As Jacque Cousteau said: We only protect what we love! I Love Sharks! Please continue to help me with this huge challenge we face fighting for the animals we love! God Bless You All! Go to the link in my bio to help save sharks and other wildlife! Hope to see you at Tiger Beach with me soon! @jim_abernethy @wildlifevoiceinc @sealegacy #TurningTheTide #FinBanNOW #worthmorealive #FlFinBan #NoFinFl #sharks #epicencounters #shark #StopTheFinTrade #reefsharks #Bethechangetheworldneeds #stopneedlessslaughter (at Tiger Beach) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1C5gS8Hu8V/?igshid=1m345kxbal9eq

Grey Reef Sharks Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos is a beautiful medium sized shark which can be distinguished from other sharks by the plain white-tipped dorsal fin and the dark tips on all other fins. The Gray Reef typically grows no larger than 2.5 meters (8 feet) and 35 kilograms (77 pounds) in weight. This species can live to about 25 years of age. What really sets this shark apart is its keen sense of smell. Like all Reef Sharks, it loves the warm and shallow waters near coral reefs or atolls. This is the most common shark in the entire Indo-Pacific. This is a very social species, often seen building “schools” of more than 100. They are active both during the day as well as at night. Social hierarchies and dominance varies depending on the habitat of various shark populations, but a social structure is almost always apparent. Because they are larger than most other species of Reef Shark, they are considered the most dominant species in the sensitive reef ecosystem.
