The Good and Bad of Our Skyy: PeteKao

SPOILER WARNING.

The Good -

The settings/sets. In this regard, PeteKao's episode is...wow. Touring around Thailand (basically) was such a refreshing idea. Every location was beautiful and new, yet felt completely lived-in.

Shot composition. I'm not sure who directed PeteKao's episode but this:

was absolutely gorgeous. This entire scene felt meticulously planned, from the red light to the water off the river. What a calming and romantic atmosphere.

The visuals. I really try hard not to comment on these types of things but Pete and Kao, especially in parts 1 and 2 of their episode, look mesmerizingly handsome. The make up was done to perfection, the hair styling was perfectly complimentary of Tay and New's natural looks, and the styling both showed Pete and Kao's personalities and fit their bodies perfectly. The whole episode just looked (mostly) gorgeous but I really can't say enough about how handsome the guys looked.

The plot. Here is an example of a simple and efficient plot. I love the idea of Kao setting up the a sort of date day under the guise of steps to thwart a bad fortune. There's something very sweet about the way he goes about it and the steps he invents. Take, for instance, the holding hands every hour or taking the bus for the day. Each step was a creative way to do regular couple things with Pete.

The romance and romantic chemistry. Okay so I've stated this before, but what's weird with Tay and New as actors is that they don't have classic romantic chemistry in any sense. There's is more of a been-there-done-that and now they're just getting by with their natural respect for each other and attachment love (rather than, say, the honeymoon phase you'd see with pairings like ChrisJake from History3: Trapped, or the touchiness with pairings like OhmToey). This chemistry applies to every iteration of Pete and Kao. I say this because throughout this episode of Our Skyy, I noticed a different side to New as an actor. For the first time, I saw Kao show a soft yearning for Pete that was very subtle but also very natural (for reference, I've watched Kiss Me Again (KMA): PeteKao cut and Dark Blue Kiss (DBK)). I may do a post on this later but New falls very naturally into a tender and passive place when he acts beside Tay. I'm not sure if this is how he is in other roles, but with Tay (and, importantly, not in all of their interactions), New can take his acting to a sweet place. This creates an interesting dynamic when you introduce romantic love to Pete and Kao's story. I say this because Pete is like the complete opposite of Kao and Tay does well to play up the tsundere in Pete. The romantic chemistry that results is push-pull, but not in the classic PeteKao way. It's sweeter and, frankly, more entertaining to watch. The chemistry between Pete and Kao (as created by their actors), then gives way to a romance story that is fun, charming, and, most importantly, wholly believable.

The physical intimacy and non-verbal communication. While Pete and Kao don't always deliver in this arena, this episode was filled with knowing looks, tender touches, curious glances, and loving gestures. One scene that stands out in particular is the scene where they're walking through an alleyway and Kao stops because his eye twitches. Pete doesn't understand what's going on and thus immediately rushes to check on him. The concern on Pete's face is extremely convincing. The look Kao gives Pete as Pete is checking on him is just one of many throughout this episode and can only be described as enamored. It's a very subtle moment and shows just how into Pete Kao is.

There were a few scenes that seemed totally improv'd that I loved. One in particular was after being wrapped, Pete and Kao are standing outside of the building talking about how Pete hit someone in the nuts, thinking it was Kao. Kao jokes that Pete likes to hit peoples' dicks and Pete says something along the lines of "I'll hit yours too." And Kao goes "go ahead, do it." lmao. And he acted it in such a way that it felt like watching New in a variety show with Tay rather than Kao in a scripted show with Pete. New, when he is not playing as Kao has a very adult sense of humor and is a bit abrasive in this way, while Tay is kind of subdued when he's not playing Pete. And this is exactly what you see in that scene. I mean, perhaps those scenes were scripted, but it honestly seemed too out of character and off-the-cuff to be Pete and Kao.

The Bad -

The conflict of this story should not exist...like at all. Once Kao confesses to Pete that it was all a lie, Pete is (rightfully?) upset. But then, right after the break, we learn that Pete knew all along that Kao was lying. But then...why was he upset? Why was this never explained in the story? That's a bit of a plot hole that really didn't need to exist. It was clear throughout the episode that Pete was just playing along so why the need for the fifth-hour conflict on that basis? It would've been a lot more logical for the conflict to be Pete's breaking point with all the ridiculous scenarios they found themselves in rather than his irritation at Kao lying to him.

There was no reason to have the pervert scenes. The pervert learned nothing and neither did Pete. Also, how did the pervert find them again? lmao.

The kiss. Look, I know I spent a ridiculous amount of time raving on the romance and the physical intimacy of this episode but New still kisses Tay like he is very aware of the cameras? The kiss was definitely a step up from what we got in KMA, but I've seen BL kisses 1000x better than this one. I don't know if New wasn't comfortable, if he was directed to basically lip smash Tay, or some other thing, but it's almost always New that I've noticed not being able to relax in those scenes. It just doesn't make for good TV.

Branching off the kiss, Kao as a character is very inconsistent when it comes to romance. In KMA, he's very direct with Pete about his feelings but largely aromantic. In Our Skyy, he is hyper-romantic, very indirect with his feelings (I mean just look at the plot of this episode) and takes an active role in their date day. In DBK, he's slightly different. I don't know but it's like his character changes every episode of every series and it's jarring. This inconsistent writing is much of the reason I don't think the awkward kiss scenes are entirely New's fault as an actor but also a general confusion about what his character is supposed to want.

Branching off even more from the kiss, the state of Pete and Kao's relationship in this episode is confusing. Obviously, this episode takes place after KMA (and I guess before DBK?), but Pete and Kao act extremely shy about anything that remotely invokes physical intimacy. If they've been together for so long and have (clearly) had sex, why is Kao still so shy (but only when it comes to actually being physical with Pete)? How much of Kao's shyness is bad and inconsistent writing and how much of it is actor boundaries? These are huge problems in BL that take viewers out of the story and can be solved differently depending on what the deeper problem is.

Also, what was with the not lingering on the romantic moments long enough? This really irritated me with the hand holding. It's like they held hands for 10 seconds and the let go immediately. I realize this isn't a huge thing but it does go into my earlier points about inconsistent characterization and actor comfortability.

My expectations of this year's BL

Something I regretted a lot last year is having gotten so entangled and not having much time to enjoy the good Asian BL that makes my life so happy (Maybe that's why 2018 was a shitty year for me) so I decided that 2019 would be different, that I would see how much BL would get in my way, and so far I am doing, this year I will have enough material to blog here. I guess you have seen the overwhelming amount of trailers that appeared, an untold amount of Boys Love and I have my list of the most relevant.

Great Men Academy:

Love is a beautiful young girl who dreams of being with her platonic love Vier, a handsome boy who was a winner in a contest at the Men's Great Men's academy, meets a mysterious unicorn who helps give a wish that will change life completely to Love, leading his "boring" story to a full of adventure only to be able to be next to his master. Could Love get his beloved?

It's over, I know, but I still haven’t seen the ending because I can’t find subtitles. This series fell in love with me in a way that I didn’t think possible, it’s of a superior quality and it makes me wish that all the Thai series were like that, if I like the end I’ll write an "About Great Men Academy"

He's coming To Me:

After his death, Met is a ghost that is consumed by loneliness. That is until he meets a strange boy that can see him. The two bond in a state of happiness and joy as they develop into friends. But what happens when Met falls for the boy who is alive?

I'm up to date and until now I really like the chemistry between Ohm and Singto, it's as if the OhmToey had never happened and I find it better than Peraya. (It's been a while since Krist has stopped liking me)

The Best Twins:

The story of the twins Per, the heterosexual, and Pond, the homosexual. Pond has a relationship with his neighbor Tee. Family life is shaken by the twins' older sister, Pad, who is against her brother Pond being gay. When Tee, the ex-boyfriend of Pond, comes back, things start to get even more chaotic.

It's already started but I want to let some weeks go by to start watching it, I don’t want to see just one and stay waiting.

The Effect:

Shin is a 1st year university student who is considered an outsider. Due to his clumsiness he becomes acquainted with Keng, a 4th year student. The two become close but when nasty rumours about them start to be spread, things become sour. There are two versions of the novel that this drama is based on. One is dark and may not be suitable for certain people. The other is on the lighter side. It is currently unclear as to which version this drama will be based on.

Waiting eagerly, it sounds too good to pass up. They have Yatch and James from Love By Chance. I was dying to see them do BL! and this series gives us the touch of drama and bitterness we need among so many “pink” series.

Theory Of Love:

Third is a filmology major and a member of the Savage team along with his best friends Too, Bone, and Kai, but he holds a secret. Third has been secretly in love with one of his best friends for three years. Kai. For three years he has cultivated his selfless love in his heart, silently supporting and loving Kai while knowing there is absolutely no future between them because Kai is absolutely straight. Kai is as straight as they come. And an absolute player. What's worse? He has a no dating friends policy. How long can you love silently while watching your best friend bring a different girl back every night? Third has tried, for years he has tried to stop, to just think of Kai as his friend, but each time he has been unsuccessful. For as easy as it is to fall in love, to stop is just as hard. Maybe even harder. That is, until one night he finds out something that breaks him completely. But when Third decides to stop. Kai decides to start.

The one that without having started is positioned among the best of the year. How not to see it? Also I read the book I can’t wait to see the OffGun in action! By the way, do I think or the OffGun are following the MaxTul in becoming one of the most relevant couples in Thailand?

HIStory3:

TRAP :The cooperation between police and the people create a harmonious new society. Police who are filled with justice are turned into the personal protection for gangsters. But one police officer who is supposed to be a bodyguard falls into the sweet trap of the underworld, as he develops feelings for the son of a gang leader.

A police officer and a gang leader were killed in gunshot attack. What's the secret behind this case? The only survivor, Tang Yi, is now the gang leader. He's striving to find the murderer by setting a trap…but the police officer, Meng Shao Fei, who has a sense of justice, gradually falls into the "love trap" set by Tang Yi.

THAT DAY: He's waiting for the lover to come back someday, hoping a miracle could happen again. A cuisine brings back those memories happening between them in the past.

This series never fails me, every time they bring romantic and interesting stories and this time is no exception, I saw the trailers and I loved them.

3 Will Be Free:

Neo is a stripper who is running away from a loan shark and his gang (Known as Crazy48) for stealing a purse that contains compromising information from the group. One fine day, the criminals find him in the bar where he works. In attempting to escape, he ends up bumping into two people who will change his life: Chin, a gay boy who is the son of a gangster who is frustrated at being rejected by a friend; and Mew, the manager of the stripper bar who is running away from her past. Accidentally, they end up killing one of the gang members who was chasing Neo, which make them enemies of the gang. Now all three need to find a solution to escape from this situation together, while at the same time managing the physical and sentimental attraction that arises between them.

They have Joss and Tay in the cast, in addition to my favorite villain Gunsmile, in addition to a dark and violent plot (And it seems that there will be a polyamorous relationship which is new in this type of series) How the hell can Iavoid seeing it? I'm more than anxious, I don’t mind waiting until the end of the year for it.

End Of Love:

Rumors of a series that will be broadcast in late 2019 and early 2020, rumors of the return of Captain and White as a couple along with PinSon. Rumors and more rumors that do nothing but increase the hype and I wish with all the strengths of my heart that the rumors are true.

Dark Blue Kiss:

And the PeteKao continues! These guys are a perfect couple, it is absolutely necessary to see them even if we have to wait until October.

2Moons2:

Before I see it, I need the social networks of Chiffon Cake to insult her, but I’ll see her, I will sit sullen and shake my head in denial and disgust. It's too late for another season of 2Moons Worse if it's a reboot! Did you see everything that is coming this year? 2Moons is precindible at this point, we’ll have several university series, Love By Chance has already passed that gives a kick in the ass to more than one series of that type Is it necessary 2Moons2? Ahhh, I'll see it just because the new cast deserves an opportunity.

I didn’t mention the second season of What The Duck because I decided to omit it forever, I don’t plan to see it, I'm not interested.

Make it right the series 2 recent episode was really breaking my heart. Though, “that” scene happened in Book’s past, still it disturbed me a lot (I’m really getting myself in that series).

Anyway, to ease my poor little heart, I rewatched some of OhmToey’s videos in youtube. I even stalked them in instagram (hihihi). And for the second time around, I couldn’t miss the sweet moments they shared both on-cam and especially off-cam. They were even sweet than Peak and Boom (I guess, Boom is a little bit shy since he’s the younger). Among all my OTP, OhmToey is my favorite!!

Some say, it’s part of their so called fan service. But what the heck! They are just teens. Ohm is 17 and Toey is 21, if it’s all fanservice, they even did it better than the celebrities older than them. Unless, whatever they’re showing are their true feelings. And with Ohm’s look, I don’t think he could fake anything. Even Toey, if he’s uncomfortable, it showed in his face. But every time Ohm will come to him, he’s so comfortable with him.

Ohm and Toey have built a strong relationship only them could understand. Ohm is so clingy (that’s so obvious) but I haven’t seen him hug others the way he always hugs Toey. For him, Toey might be his big brother he could always rely on or more than it. As for Toey, he acts as a big bro for his little duck. He let him do whatever he wants but he also cares for him a lot. They always take care of each other. 😆 Whatever they’re showing are not only for their show. That’s what I believe in. It’s easy to spot fake behavior, and they are not one of those. What they show are their true feeling for one another.

Whatever happens in the next episode of MIR2, I wish Ohm and Toey will always be friends, the same with the other actors in the series. I want to support them in all their endeavors, but as a fan, I’m also hoping for their development as a couple. Wahhh! Their videos really make my hopes up.
