2011 – Died: Jamey Rodemeyer (March 21, 1997 - September 18, 2011) was an openly bisexual teenager, known for his activism against homophobia and his videos on YouTube to help victims of homophobic bullying. He committed suicide as a result of constant bullying.[
Jamey T. Rodemeyer lived with his parents and his sister in their home near Buffalo, New York. He was open about his sexuality, and faced severe bullying as a result of it. Rodemeyer's inspiration to help others came from Lady Gaga, whom he admired most. He often referred to her in his videos, and quoted her lyrics to provide guidance to others. He also made a video for the "It Gets Better" project, a website dedicated to preventing teen suicide.
Rodemeyer was found dead by his sister on the morning of September 18, 2011, in an apparent suicide by hanging. Before his death, he posted a final update on Twitter directed to Lady Gaga. The tweet read, "¡ladygaga bye mother monster, thank you for all you have done, paws up forever".
In an interview with Ann Curry on The Today Show Jamey's parents said that their son was still being bullied, even after his suicide. When his sister attended a school homecoming dance, Jamey's friends began chanting his name in support when a Lady Gaga song began playing. As a result, bullies at the dance began chanting that they were glad he was dead.
Lady Gaga later met with President Barack Obama to discuss what his administration would do to prevent bullying in schools. Also in response to his death, reigning Miss New York Kaitlin Monte founded an online petition to bring the issue of cyberbullying (known as "Jamey's Law") to New York legislators. Shortly after, State Senator Jeffrey Klein proposed new cyberbullying legislation. The two joined to launch the New York Cyberbully Census.
In October 2011 actor Zachary Quinto noted Rodemeyer's death as the genesis of his decision to come out publicly as gay, saying on his website "...but in light of Jamey's death - it became clear to me in an instant that living a gay life without publicly acknowledging it - is simply not enough to make any significant contribution to the immense work that lies ahead on the road to complete equality". In response to Quinto's coming out (and in reaction to gay suicides caused by bullying), Dan Kloeffler of ABC News Now also came out.

53 AD – Trajan, Roman emperor, born (d.117 AD); The first non-Italian Roman emperor. His accomplishments were both martial and civic, including construction of the aqueducts, the restoration of the Appian Way and the building of the massive Forum of Trajan. According to Spartianus, he was a proud possessor of a paedogogium, a harem of boys he took along with him on campaign, apparently for his and his officers' pleasure.
Dio Cassius, sometimes known as Cassius Dio, reports that Trajan drank heavily and loved boys. "I know, of course, that he was devoted to boys and to wine, but if he had ever committed or endured any base or wicked deed as the result of this, he would have incurred censure; as it was, however, he drank all the wine he wanted, yet remained sober, and in his relation with boys he harmed no one."
This sensibility was one that influenced even his governing, leading him to favor the king of Edessa out of appreciation for his handsome son: "On this occasion, however, Abgarus, induced partly by the persuasions of his son Arbandes, who was handsome and in the pride of youth and therefore in favor with Trajan, and partly by his fear of the latter's presence, he met him on the road, made his apologies and obtained pardon, for he had a powerful intercessor in the boy."
His sexuality was never in question, only the stories used to illustrate his preferences. The monumental erection, the Column of Trajan, was Rome's highly appropriate tribute to this emperor, considered to have been one of the "good emperors."

1905 – Greta Garbo (d.1990) was regarded as one of the greatest and most inscrutable movie stars ever produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and the Hollywood studio system. Garbo received a 1955 Honorary Oscar "for her unforgettable screen performances" and was ranked as the fifth greatest female star of all time by the American Film Institute. Garbo's biographer Barry Paris notes that she was "technically bisexual, predominantly lesbian, and increasingly asexual as the years went by."
Garbo began life in poverty as Greta Lovisa Gustafsson, the daughter of a janitor in Stockholm, Sweden. When her father died in 1919 of tuberculosis, Greta had to quit school at the age of fourteen and go to work. Her good looks helped her get jobs in a couple of advertising films before she was discovered in 1922 by unabashedly homosexual Swedish filmmaker Mauritz Stiller. He cast her as the female lead in Gosta Berling's Saga (1924) and got her a role in a German film, The Joyless Street (1925). Stiller took control of the actress's career, changing her last name to Garbo. When he went to the United States to work for Louis Mayer at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Stiller took his protégée along. Mauritz Stiller did not succeed in Hollywood, but Greta Garbo was destined to become a star. She made fourteen silent films, among them The Torment (1926) and Flesh and the Devil (1927), where she tended to play the beautiful femme fatale, luring men into passion. Garbo made the rocky transition from silent films to talkies flawlessly. Her husky, accented voice fitted intriguingly with her ethereal beauty, enabling her to create more complex characters than she ever had in silents.
In Anna Christie (1930), Anna Karenina (1935), Camille (1936), and others, she played a tragic heroine, passionate, but doomed. In the delightful 1939 comedy Ninotchka, she mocks this gloomy sensuality with charming self-deprecation, causing MGM to tout the film with the single headline, "Garbo Laughs!" In 1941, prompted perhaps by the failure of Two-Faced Woman, her comedy follow-up to Ninotchka, Garbo took a break from filmmaking. Although she reportedly considered several projects for a comeback, the title roles in Hamlet and The Portrait of Dorian Gray, among them, her break turned into permanent retirement.
It has been suggested that Garbo struggled greatly with her sexuality, only becoming involved with other women in affairs that she could control. Some also suggest that Garbo remained single in the United States because of an unrequited love for her drama school sweetheart, the Swedish actress Mimi Pollak. Garbo's personal letters recently released to the public indicate that she remained in love with Pollak for the rest of her life. When Pollak announced she was pregnant, Garbo wrote: "We cannot help our nature, as God has created it. But I have always thought you and I belonged together."
Famously connected to Mercedes de Acosta, one of the more Sapphic companions of the day, de Acosta wrote of their affair in her book Here Lies the Heart. Upon her death in 1990, Garbo left her entire, substantial estate to her niece, Gray Reisfeld, and nothing to Claire, the elderly female companion with whom she lived for many years.

The World of “Crazed” One Direction Fandom and the Impacts of it
"I stop breathing as he reaches out his hands to my hips, and travels them upward, his eyes following his touch, reaching the back of my head". This excerpt is from the real person fanfiction series, Wrong // Harry Styles by prolific fanfiction writer TheasWords. WOW, this is STEAMY. This excerpt is from a more extensive fan work about the band One Direction, and there are millions of comparable works swirling around the internet only a single click away.This sexual fanfiction has gained 22.3 million reads since its release in October of 2016. LIKE THAT IS A LOT OF READERS. But how many of those fans are young girls?
Despite portraying unwanted sexual advances and casual descriptions of aggressive sex, Wrong // Harry Styles reached a vast audience. As most people reading this sexual fanfiction are not yet high school graduates, these young girls may have not even undergone sex education when reading. Wattpad.com, an online fiction-writing platform, has an extensive user base of "teenage girls and young women; 80% of the site's users are female and under 25" (Korobkova & Black, 2014). Wattpad is where many young users consume over-sexualized fan content. While the sex-based content is accessible to the fans, there is also an abundance of romance or adventure-based content dealing with the band.
Across the fandom, there is a spectrum of Directioner. I am not a Directioner, but I do enjoy a lot of the music they released and I am a HUGE Harry Styles fan, so I can still appreciate the cultural phenomena that was their rise to fame. While there are fans who just enjoy the music, many fans allow this admiration of One Direction to hold a significant part of their life, represented in the fanfiction "Copyright x One Direction." The author writes a dialogue between two characters that results in one of the characters saying that she is "not obsessed" with One Direction. This line prompted a fan to write "I believe the word people use is dedicated" (Yassin, 2017). And as the media CONSTANTLY likes to remind people, they believe that One Direction fans are much more than dedicated.
LOOK AT ALL THESE PEOPLE WHO SPENT THEIR MONEY TO SUPPORT THE BAND! WOW SO MANY UNASSUMING YOUNG GIRLS GETTING TAKEN ADVANTAGE OFF! That seems to be the consensus of the media. Which is WRONG! What they did for young girls in the early 2010s is very important to discuss! The band may no longer be together creating music and going on tour, but the fandoms have not lost any momentum. Many dedicated fans follow each of the boys' careers and speculate about the band and their future. I love to watch the twitter feed for One Direction fans and I just feel like this tweet really sums up the feelings of many of these “crazed” One Direction fans.
Because the fandom consists mostly of minors, this admiration and appreciation crossed a line; this attraction has moved towards something less fun, having consequences for young girls' development. With more than 25 million followers on Instagram, One Direction is still a very prominent popular culture figure. Directioners have become one of the most well-known fandoms to utilize social media and is a very prominent presence on many fan based social media platforms such as Wattpad, reddit, Twitter, and Tumblr (hey friends on TUMBLR!!!!).
Being a Directioner means having a sense of group identity as well as personal identity also helps a child feel a sense of belonging. This is the main benefit of joining any fandom! The majority of fans are young and in those ages of 11-18, much of a person’s identity and personality are NOT developed yet. These young Directioners use the One Direction community to develop their identity. Joining the fandom and interacting with many aspects of the fandom, such as Wattpad, Tumblr, and Twitter leads to increased self-identification in social groups outside of the One Direction fandom. It is very important to note that reading this fanfiction is still reading, and can be valuable in a spark in interest in education and other forms of literature. One Direction is significant in these young girls’ lives, it is more than just an interest in a band’s music, but in the people who make up One Direction itself. Self-proclaimed “Directioner” wrote in a blog post about her relationship with One Direction and how it affected her personal development
“I feel like I have grown up with them, as I made my One Direction-themed Twitter account on January the 6th, 2011, after using my account throughout X-Factor. Since then, I have gained 70,000 followers and made some life-long best friends. I have also grown from 14 to 18, and I still cry every time they are on TV (some things never change)! They are like having older brothers that I have never even met but know everything about. That is the hardest thing to explain about being such a dedicated fan, the feeling of knowing someone without them knowing that you exist”.  The image above is of the writer of the quote Chandra Gray and Niall Horan. These anecdotal stories of fans who have grown with One Direction are not hard to come by; many fans feel an intense connection with the band that has driven them to the place in their lives they are today. Many children become directioners, because their friends are directioners, therefore expanding their social group from friends to fans with a common object of fandom. While traditional education draws on rules, laws, and traditions in order to address how to read and write literature, fan fiction allows more free and creative space to appease these pressures of confined literature. YAY One Direction. Suck it Mainstream media! Kids get a lot of good things from being in this awesome fandom!
ANOTHER POSITIVE CONSEQUENCE OF THE 1D FANDOM! The interest in the fandom, and exposure to many different sexualities through the One Direction/ Directioner social group aids young girls in learning to express themselves and further builds their identity. The exposure to sexuality through an interest in the One Direction fandom aids Directioners in finding their sexual identity on their terms. It allowed young girls to come together to explore issues important to them. It also allows a free space for expression in the fandom which can ultimately lead to self acceptance and less negative consequences of possible closeting and shading of a child's sexuality through the disclosure of others being so open and normalized in the One Direction fandom. There are many empirical examples of One Direction causing young girls to try and evaluate their own sexuality. A Directioner named Ash tweeting “I swear everything was fine before I knew about one direction. I thought I was straight and now here we are”. She could come up online because of her connection to One Direction. SO COOL! While this exposure's positive implications are quite prevalent, there are some negative consequences of being a One Direction fandom member from such a young age.  
Ok Media, you might be a little right :( Media as a whole has implications on the development of children, and this research is much fresher in the world of childhood development. With the rise of media, came the rise of problems associated with interaction with the media. Because youth is the period during which people form a critical part in constructing their sexual identity and gender, this can produce positive and negative effects on these younger individuals. This grander idea is applied to the One Direction fandom. As most of the One Direction content was produced and is still produced through the Online mediums of Reddit, twitter, Tumblr, and Wattpad, these aspects of social media directly involve members of the One Direction fandom. Cybersex and expressions of sexuality through social media are often the first activity through which teenagers can explore their sexuality freely and without biases. This can be good! It helps learn about sexual expression, but this can also expose an 11 year old to some topic that they might not be ready for. This interest in fandom is sometimes the only form of sexual education that some children will receive until they reach secondary school, and it is of general interest to many children that are in the prime Directioner age group of 11-15. Sometimes, reading fan fiction is the only way they are taught about what is correct in the bedroom and what is a violation of consent and boundaries.
WHICH CAN BE GOOD, but also can be really bad. While internet searching questions about sex will get the user more answers and more results that are from experts in the field of sexual education and reproductive health, Wattpad, Tumblr, and Twitter are a less intimidating and more community building forum for these types of experiences. It is interactive, there are comment features that allow users to comment and respond to one another. While this may sometimes be helpful for the child to expose them to the idea of sex, it can also be incredibly harmful for the children to get the wrong ideas about sex.
The Negative Consequences of Joining the One Direction Fandom, because sadly there are a few.
While there are some less nuanced consequences of the interest in the One Direction fandom such many “crazed” fans doing self damaging things such as “Natasha, 17,  said on the documentary Crazy About One Direction: ‘The whole reason I got braces was because Niall Horan got braces. I didn’t really need braces but I wanted them because they look good and because Niall had them’” (Baillie, 2014). There are some more costly and deep impacts of the involvement in the fandom. In One Direction, a fandom of mostly young girls, this has manifested itself in a very sexually explicit fashion. The most famous example of sexually explicit One Direction fan content is "After" (a movie based on a One Direction fanfiction), made by Wattpad studios. Wattpad has a plethora of PG through NC-17 1D fan fiction content. While many of the posts are from the early days of the One Direction saga, there is still a plethora of new postings from many fandom members about the band. We have ALL seen it. When I was younger, I was a member of the 5 seconds of Summer Fandom (side note they toured with 1D so why i was not a direction is besides me). I read A LOT of fanfiction that I should not have been reading. I remember that to mark a section as sexual, the writer would put a warning before. SMUT or SEX SCENE ahead in bold, but that did not ward of 12 year old Grace. I read ahead and BOY was I surprised. I had no idea what a “throbbing member” was. I hadn’t received formal sex education and I was SHOCKED. According to  a CNN article written in 2017, “a good portion of the fanfiction on the internet ranges in age-appropriateness from completely mild to nearly soft-core porn… Whether you’re a writer or a reader, you’ll come across words and images that are graphic” (Knorr, 2017). As the fandom is relatively young, exposure to explicit sexual content may formulate a harmful, dangerous image about sex for young women, and wow can it expose you to some THINGS.
TIME TO GET SERIOUS! TW FOR RAPE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT. Many of these real person fan fictions contain depictions of rape and lack of consent. This portrays a dangerous image of sexual interactions. These are perpeutaing something known as rape myths. As this is a form of sex education for many young teens, the One Direction fan fiction community can educate them with the wrong information. Many of these scenes contain graphic violent sex, including depections of rape. This has incredibly negative implications and can transfer from the virtual space to a physical sexual experience.
Final Thoughts on the Implications of the One Direction Fandom. There is nothing wrong with joining the One Direction fandom whatsoever. People just hate it because young girls enjoy it. Fanfiction is incredibly stigmatized in the modern, mainstream media, but this should not always be the case. Especially since the band has broken up, many of the ex-super Directioners have grown to be young adults. Their involvement in the band has affected their life in one aspect or another. Rather than shy from exploring this phenomenon of fandom and fan work, it is an important idea to explore to learn more about the effects on the young mind. Researchers need to spend more time looking into this issue, To this day, One Direction remains popular with the young girls they grew with and they continue to inspire their fans who miss the band (we see you One Direction #endthebreak). As the younger girls grew into women, they had One Direction and their chosen family, Directioners to guide them along their path; that is what the One Direction fandom truly is for young women. Also, if One Direction is reading this, please at LEAST collaborate with one another. NO ONE IS STOPPING YOU.

I looked at her in absolute disgust, and Girt was clearly thinking "what the actual fuck" as well. I do not miss her feral mouth. Are you good at staring contests? No. Eye contact is very difficult for me to maintain. Do you like peanut butter? I love peanut butter. When was the last time you had to present something to your class? In this mandatory but entirely pointless entry class at my last college, we all had to do like this PowerPoint introducing ourselves. I hated it. Who was the last person that told you they missed you? I think my friend Chelsea. What store is your favorite shirt from? It's not a real store, but rather an online brand: Cloak. Mark is one of the owners/creators so I obviously support them intensely. Have you ever fell off your bed while you were sleeping? No, thankfully. Do you have something you’re supposed to tell someone, but you haven’t yet? No. What type of food do you never really eat? Vegetables, oops. Have you ever cut someone else’s hair? No. Do you like going to weddings? Not really, if I'm being honest. I'm only interested in photographing weddings for the only the couple pictures and pay, really. I'm not big on formal events. What’s your favorite flavor squash? I don’t like squash. Do you or anyone in your house have a severe allergy? No. Who was the last guest in your house and what were they staying for? Our landlord/family friend, just to hang out for a little bit and chat with Mom. What fad were you actually into? Hm. What was the last spontaneous thing you did? I'm not a very spontaneous person, so I really don't know.

Nanao - Annoyed. Very annoyed. Not only does she have to contend with Shunsui’s fangirls zipping around the division, now she’s got them hot on her heels too! The power of the glare is strong with Nanao, she can halt a fan in their tracks at ten paces. Most of the pictures on her website are “the glare”. It’s a whole thing, there are poems, songs, and art dedicated to it. However, Nanao does go on the website to interact with her fans – those that are book lovers like her. There is a section for Nanao’s book recommendations, and even a book club  forum where her fans can read the same book she’s reading and once she’s done they all discuss it. She loves it.
Omaeda - His website has 11 followers. Ten of them are on his payroll, the other one is a complete mystery. Rumors fly that the one unpaid “fan” is really Sui Feng monitoring him; that it is a woman that has her sights set on his wealth and is gathering recon to lure him into marriage (this one started by Omaeda); and the biggest rumor, the one spawned by Sui Feng scoffing, “It’s probably his mother.” The content is all uploaded by Omaeda. There was the one time his mother posted embarrassing baby pictures in the comment section of one of his posts. They were immediately deleted. He buried himself in fried rice crackers to deal with the “trauma”.
Izuru - Is shocked to his toes. Upon first seeing his fansite, he not only smiled, but he was happy the rest of the day. He always blushes a bit when fans ask for him to pose with them for pictures. Surprise of surprises, Izuru always smiles in all the pictures. So many fangirls – those blue eyes, that blonde hair, that tender poet’s soul…women swoon over him. Once a week he posts a new poem and his fans are all over it. The amount of hearts that stream through the comments is staggering. Trolls are not allowed. Anyone that dares to troll one of Izuru’s poems is destroyed by the fans like it’s their favorite sport. Rose is trying to convince him to do a “Win a Date With Izuru” contest like he did on his fansite. 
Isane - Like Izuru, she’s really shocked. She turns bright pink when she first sees the fansite and how much adoration there is for her. Retsu encourages her to interact with her fans, hoping it will bolster her confidence. Fan pictures are a mix – many show a startled, pink-cheeked Isane looking a bit unsettled, while others are able to make her comfortable enough to smile happily. Either way, she’s still quite the beauty. The new attention rattles her sometimes, especially if someone very attractive tells her how beautiful she is. So much so, she tripped on air and landed right in the arms of a very cute officer from the 5th division. This led to a date and a rather hot kiss goodnight. Isane definitely thinks this website might be a good thing after all.
Momo - Is pretty tickled that she has fans. She’s pretty easy-going so asking her for a picture or having some interaction with her isn’t a hard thing to accomplish. Like Nanao, she loves books and has linked to Nanao’s book club forum where her and her fans interact with Nanao and her fans. She has her own reading recommendation list on the site. As a very good artist, she often posts some of her artwork, much to the delight of her fans. She loves getting art from her fans too. She’ll pick a piece of fan art every week to showcase on her fansite with compliments from her. Is really into memes. She loves them especially if they’re cute. Rangiku always manages to post at least one or two a week aimed as Toshiro. Momo loves them.
Renji - Has mixed feelings about it all. While he’s flattered by the attention, he’s also a little awkward about it. He’s not accustomed to being in the public eye and looks to Byakuya for clues how to handle the fame. Along with his close friends, Ikkaku, Shuhei, and Izuru, Renji has a constant swarm of fangirls that follow him everywhere – to work, to meals, to futsal. And, I do mean everywhere – one fan snuck into Renji’s bathroom while he was soaking in the tub. She was trying to get a picture of his famous tattoos, to see if he really has them everywhere. Renji’s angry snarl scared her so bad she dropped her camera and ran like he’d set his bankai on her. Byakuya had some questions about why a young lady was seen running from his bathroom, screaming. And, before you ask, yes, there are some die-hard fans that have gotten tattoos just like their beloved Renji. He visits his fansite once or twice a week to check in. He’s an active guy, busy with work, friends, and his own interests, but he drops in if he’s bored just to see what’s going on.
Tetsuzaemon - Boasts that of course he’s got fans, how could he not, being such a manly man and all. On the inside is secretly thrilled, now he has confirmation that he’s all that and a bottle of sake. If you thought his ego was swelled before, it’s about to pop any minute now. He brags about all the followers he has. (He knows the exact number and always double checks before meeting up with friends anywhere) Ikkaku likes to razz him by photo bombing his fan pictures. It irks Tetsuzaemon to no end when he’s taking a picture with a cute girl and here comes Ikkaku’s gnarly feet or bald head. Drives him nuts. On the fansite he interacts with his fans as much as he can, which is a few times a week when he’s not busy with work. He’s very genuine and rather humble when talking with fans. Has been carrying on a very heated private online affair with a mystery lady who really gets his motor running during their conversations and with her sweet nature. He really hopes he’s not being catfished. 
Shuhei - Turned about 5 different shades of pink when he first saw his fansite. The women – oh my god, the women that want him is on par with Kensei’s following. The fan pictures are so focused on his scar, his tattoo, his physique, and his style it’s mind-boggling. He can’t believe the things these women are saying they want to do to him. He has to be really careful where he reads comments or fan mail, hard ons at work are not only awkward, they’re distracting. He tries his best to be approachable and easy-going, but a lot of his lady followers are just as shy as he is so he gets a lot of pink-faced ladies stammering, stuttering, or talking so fast he can’t understand them. The minute that deep, rumbly timbre of his makes an appearance, it’s time to faint or melt on the spot for the fangirls. Is sometimes overwhelmed by it all, but manages to get along just fine. He’s a sweet guy and does his best not to hurt anyone’s feelings. 
Rangiku - Are you kidding me? She has taken to this like a duck to water. She is in her element – attention galore. She loves it. And, she loves going to all the other lieutenants’ fansites to post memes about them. She’s got quite a sense of humor and an eye for details. Don’t let the laziness fool you, she’s far from it, she just doesn’t like paperwork and part of her likes getting Toshiro all fussy. She is rather dedicated to her fansite and making people feel welcome there. They all love her and post pictures, art, poetry, songs, and even fashion stuff that would look good on her with where to find it. She made a whole section dedicated to her fans called “Drinks with Rangiku” and it’s all pictures of fans having a drink with her. She nearly crashed the server from all the pictures that have been uploaded. 
Yachiru - Is pretty nonchalant about her fansite. It is dedicated to her power of cute. Most pictures include some part of Kenpachi since she’s with him so much, Someone even managed to get a picture of her on her scooter in the Kuchiki mansion. The main benefit for her is that her fans keep her heavily supplied with candy. They leave offerings for her at Kenpachi’s door where she gathers them up everyday when they come home. Once in a while, though, she’ll go visit Ikkaku’s website to upload pictures of his bald head that she’s captured to look like a lamp, or the setting sun, or a smeared selfie of her biting his head. She posts them on her website too because she knows Ikkaku will delete them from his.
Ikkaku - He’s the tough guy, nothing fazes him, especially not some website. Yumichika is the one that reads everything to him. He scoffs that he’s not interested, but he still listens to every word and looks at every picture. He doesn’t mind the pictures, or the fan art. But, like Kenpachi, he really likes the videos of his fights. Those he will sit and watch for hours, looking for flaws in his technique, studying his opponents. He’ll hog the laptop until the battery dies and then has to deal with Yumichika being pissy because he didn’t get to use it. Likes to scare the group of fangirls that follow him around just to hear them squeal. He finds it hilarious. They’re all used to it now and often play it up for him. He gets Yumichika to do a daily sweep of any of Yachiru’s silly pictures. He’s not embarrassed (yeah, right), but he’s got his pride.
Nemu - Not much reaction. She sets to work gathering all kinds of statistical information from the fansite, like how many fans to picture ratios, how many memes, how many pictures are in the lab and out of the lab. You name it, she can quote you a statistic about it. She hides the information from Mayuri, knowing he will react much like he did for his own fansite. She’s very willing to pose for fan pictures. While she doesn’t smile, she doesn’t look interested and kind. She secretly talks online with her fans and has begun to grow close to a few. She’s tentatively open with her new friends and finding a bit of emotional freedom she doesn’t often get around Mayuri.
Akon - Mr. Laid-back-as-fuck checks in on his fansite during breaks at work and sometimes in the evening if he’s bored. Numerous pictures of him are all over the site. There are lots of discussions about his horns: where they came from, are they sensitive, how sexy they are. He gets lots of chuckles and lets them all stew in the mystery. Most of the fan pictures show him smoking because they always seem to catch right after he lights up. Has more than one rather ardent fan. He knows when they’re watching, stealing little mementos of things he’s discarded, one even went so far as to steal some lab notes he’d written and then threw away. She auctioned them off to other fans after keeping some for herself. Akon is, as always, very calm in the midst of it all. His fans are, for the most part, pretty laid-back too. He enjoys the fan art, and the ones that ask science questions. 
Rukia - Loves her fansite. There are bunnies galore. Her fans know her love for bunnies and use an app to make bunny features on their faces: ears, whiskers, nose, and mouth. Rukia even posts pictures of herself all ‘bunnied up’. There is fan art that she loves because she knows how much her brother admires art. She tries her hand at it too. It’s still crap, but her fans love it and call it a great example of expressionism. As long as she’s not working, she’s happy to stop and take pictures with fans or chit-chat for a bit. Everyone is really nice which is a welcome change from the stuffy Kuchiki brood she’s exposed to all the time. (Byakuya has loosened up a lot, but the rest of them are still stodgy old farts.) One of her fans created an “Angry Bunnies” game a lot like “Angry Birds”. It features Rukia hurling bunnies to take down snakes and monkeys. She loves it. Renji thinks its silly but still plays it just to try to beat her high score.

 As a coach/Mentor for both executives and small businesses, I generally am asked “Why start small when I can go big?”  However, one of the greatest controversial observations about achieving what we want in life is to think big and to live large. While there is not anything wrong with thinking big, when it comes taking action and making progress, starting small is vital.
 Most people love the idea of going big and bold. They read books where they read about doing big things, to be bold, and to take the leap of faith.  Many people remember the old saying that “You either go big, or you go home”.  Does that sound familiar?
 However, in my opinion, if you want to build a home or do something for long term, you actually need the opposite approach, which is back to starting small.
 How Starting Small Gave Rise to a Best-Selling Book
According to this article from BufferApp.com, Dale Carnegie, the famous and best-selling author of How to Win Friends and Influence People, acquired the idea of his book by starting small. This was what Carnegie said:  “I prepared a short talk. I called it ‘How to Win Friends and Influence People.’ I say ‘short.’ It was short in the beginning, but it soon expanded to a lecture that consumed one hour and thirty minutes.”
 After Carnegie shared his talks for some time, he found that some of the attendees were interested to learn more and they discussed some of the “principles” that emerged from the talks.
 Eventually, the short talk became a course, and then Carnegie started to develop the book because there was a need for a textbook for his course:  “We started with a set of rules printed on a card no larger than a postcard. The next season we printed a larger card, then a leaflet, then a series of booklets, each one expanding in size and scope. After fifteen years of experimentation and research came this book.”
 In fact, if you look the majority of the successful companies, like Apple, Dell, Amazon, etc., they all started small.  They continue to grow in small steps as well.
 All the great successes started small. This reminds me of one of my more favorite quotes:  “Every master was once a beginner.”
If you not persuaded, here are few benefits of starting small.
 Less time and energy
 It is easier to take a small action steps than it is to take a large one.  
 In other words, if you want to lose weight, do you start with hitting the gym two hours a day for 5 days a week, or do you start with just an hour a day for four days a week? To me, the first option sounds more effective, but is it maintainable? Most likely not.  This is because if you start big, it takes a lot of your energy and time. In addition, when the resistance is higher, your chances of giving up on it will be high as well.
 Thus, if you want to your habits to stick, insure you start small. The key here is to make the action easier to carry out.  When something is easy to do, like combing your hair, you will never question yourself if you ought to do it. I am here to say, you should just do.
 Overwhelming and paralysis
 As I just mentioned, when the resistance is small, it is easier to carry out the task. Moreover, this actually prevents you from feeling overwhelmed and paralyzed.
 Imagine if you are working at a job that pays you $5,000 a month. In addition, you do not have any business background and you know nothing about running a company. If you then set a goal to earn $1 million dollars within a year, do you think you could reach that goal?
 Well, there is a possibility, but is the probability high?  I think not.  This is the reason why many people fail to reach their goals.  The biggest reason is that they set a goal that is too large for them to accomplish.  However, the basic truth is that they do not believe that they can achieve it.
 In other words, they self-sabotage themselves prior to them taking action.  When you do not believe that, your goal is achievable and within your reach, you will never invest your maximum potential to reach that goal.
 Bill Gates once said, “Most people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten years.”
 This quote is a perfect illustration of the power of starting small. People want the big achievement and they want it fast. The problem is that they end up overestimating their ability to complete the task.
 However, when it comes to the long-term, they underestimate the power of starting small; and how much they can actually achieve.
 Confidence and momentum
 Besides unclogging your brain to overcome paralysis, starting small also builds your momentum and confidence.  Tony Robbins, one of my favorite success gurus once said: “People who succeed have momentum. The more they succeed, the more they want to succeed, and the more they find a way to succeed. Similarly, when someone is failing, the tendency is to get on a downward spiral that can even become a self-fulling prophecy.”
 The bottom line is the more you succeed, the more you want to succeed.  When you create small victories, you feel good. Moreover, when you feel good, you will want to do more and take more action. When you take more action, you get even bigger results.
 Success is a cycle. This is why starting small is important because it creates victories that will push you to move forward, in order to create even more victories.
 Stakes and feedback
 Eric Ries, the author of Lean Startup hit it right on the head when he shared the idea of a “Minimum Viable Product” or MVP where you develop a product with just enough features to satisfy early customers and then to provide feedback for future product development.
 In other words, when you start a business or a project, you have no idea even if your business idea will work out.  Hence, you start with an MVP. You develop the product with a lower cost and you then test the product in the market as quickly as possible. You do this because you need to know your fundamental idea will work.  If the product fails, at least you did not spend millions or billions on it.  A MVP can quickly give you the insight if something is working out or not.
 When you start a project, like an online business. You do not want to spend months and maybe even years doing the research only to discover that the ideas do not work at the launching date.
 In fact, one of the best books on productivity of which I strongly recommend, What The Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast, written by Laura Vanderkam, started NOT as a book but as an article.  The article received a ton of positive feedbacks and views that Vanderkam was asked to turn her article into a book.
 The same story happened to another author named Amy Morin. She published an article, 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do, and the article was read by over 30 million people. That same article catapulted Morin to become a best-selling author. The article was her MVP.
 Therefore, what is your MVP? You need to start small to find out.
 Starting small is the first step
 We all know that Amazon started as an online bookstore.  Today, Amazon sells everything from socks to coffee machines. Amazon is the “everything store”.  According to Brad Stone’s book, The Everything Store, Jeff Bezos did not design Amazon to be just an online bookstore. It depends on the nature of the project or the task.  For instance, if the project or the task is long-term, it is always better to start small. However, building a habit is a long-term work. In addition, to make your habit sustainable, you need to start small so that you can practice it on a regular basis.
 Do you want to make a habit stick? Start small.
 On the other hand, when it comes to short-term project or a one-time project, you may want to consider starting big.  Therefore, it depends on the nature of the task or the goal to decide whether you should go big or start small.
 The principle of starting small is more applicable to tasks and projects that require sustainability, where you need to take long-term action.  Do you also know that starting small is a great way to reduce resistance and it helps in overcoming procrastination?

Selective Outrage: What Really Makes You Hate?
What is important to you as an individual?  Each person will have a different answer.  True, many might answer the same but the driving force behind that choice will often be very personal. I live in a very rural setting in the central United States.  My desires and the important things to me are far different from someone in New York City, or London, or Hong Kong.  And yet there are many things on which we can find common ground.

For instance, two people might respond that illegal immigration is a top priority.  One might have been a legal immigrant who is upset they went through the procedure while others hopped the fence.  The other might have had a loved one killed or injured by an illegal who had been deported multiple times yet was allowed to remain due to sanctuary policies.  We reach similar answers from very different motivations.
We, as a people, regardless of what country we call home, are frequently guided to the “outrage of the day”.  We are also told not only what to be outraged about, we are told why- and most interestingly of all, most people are readily susceptible to this method of control.  Why?

The simple answer is ignorance.  Please understand, I’m not saying people are stupid, ignorance is simply the state of being uneducated and uninformed.  In most cases this is intentional.  Not willful ignorance although that is also a factor, but a result of being trained as such.  As education has become more and more centralized, governments have the power of the purse to dictate what is taught.  In an effort to keep the funds coming, schools must comply.  The only way to measure the compliance is through testing so many if not most schools rely on teachers to prepare the kids for the tests and in so doing teach to an end result rather than teaching the kids how to learn.
This method also has teachers teaching to the lowest common denominator so they get the percentage of compliance needed.  This is not to say there are not some excellent teachers out there who are going above and beyond to motivate and teach kids, not what to think, but how to learn.  However our society, in general, has become self-absorbed to care only about what we want or like and if we are challenged in our beliefs rather than defend ourselves with facts and truth, we need a safe place with coloring books and Pay-Doh if our feelings are hurt.  There are many instances of events disrupted or canceled when an invited speaker might challenge some student’s personal beliefs such as happened at Berkeley last fall.
Historically, we once believed it to be a good thing when we were forced to hear things with which we might disagree.  Debate is good and because something is widely held does not make it correct or the proper position.  Nazism was once widely held as the proper belief, yet a few dared to speak out to challenge that status quo.  Dietrich Bonhoeffer comes to mind with his famous quote about remaining silent in the face of evil.  Another is August Landmesser.  It is likely you have seen the famous photo of a large crowd offering the Nazi salute, while one man stands with his arms folded in defiance.  August was that man.
August joined the Nazi party in 1931 and began to work his way up.  However, he met a young Jewish woman in 1933 and fell in love.  He proposed to her in 1935 but was denied permission to marry her.  They had their first child that fall.  The picture was taken at a rally where Adolf Hitler himself was present making Landmesser’s stand all the more important and dangerous.  In the end, his pregnant wife was taken to a death camp where she gave birth before being murdered.  August himself was impressed into the German Army where he was declared missing in action.
The point here of course is, do you think for yourself?  Do you use facts, logic, and reason to develop your beliefs or do you follow the crowd?  Do you fear to have your beliefs and ideas challenged or are you comfortable in a discussion?  Would you stand as August did for what is right?
The United States is unique in the sense that it’s Constitution is based on self-evident truths: that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  This statement from the Declaration of Independence is a cornerstone of the constitution, and it is the supreme law that protects the minority.  Unfortunately, it is our own ignorance, willful or otherwise, that makes us susceptible to those who would oppress us.
The Rule of Law matters, yet we have been conditioned to ignore the law in lieu of feelings.  I recently wrote an article about the origins and uses of propaganda, you can read it here.  Our ignorance makes us a prime candidate for propaganda, but it is no longer governments alone that use this insidious tactic.
When our founders added the Bill of Rights to our Constitution, they were addressing concerns raised by the Anti-Federalists.  They placed five rights in the First Amendment in which they prefaced, “Congress shall make no law…” and then enumerated religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition as being rights which should never be altered.  A free press historically was much like a ravenous wolf seeking out information with which to feed its voracious appetite.  The press was to be a referee of sorts, calling out “fouls” committed by politicians, businesses, and other “bad actors”.  I find it ironic that while many in the media will tout the “Freedom of the Press” mentioned in the First Amendment, they seem incapable of understanding the Second Amendment and the words, “Shall not be infringed”.

Instead, the press has become more of a cheerleader and instigator.  Investigative reporting is a thing of the past, replaced with a plethora of Parrots or Minah birds repeating what others are saying, nearly verbatim.  If a story is wrong, inaccurate or misleading, it is literally everywhere.  And if called on it a retraction, if any, is as well hidden as the Holy Grail.  The “Guardian of the Republic” is no more.
Unfortunately, we have come to expect this more or less in much of the world.
For example, in the US today whether you watch on TV, online or read the papers you might think this rifle called an AR-15 was the most destructive weapon of war available to man.  They will suggest “If just one life can be saved”, and then ignore all the other ways in which far more people are killed and injured.  What of the deficit spending that is burying our children and grandchildren in debt?  Who sounds the alarm?  What of the politicians who live by a different set of rules from the people, who enrich themselves while holding us accountable?  What of the collusion between businesses and government?  Where are the investigative reporters who leave no stone unturned until the truth is revealed?
Truth has no agenda.  Yet we cannot trust the media to deliver the truth.  We can expect the media to offer selective outrage over the problème du jour.  Dozens of black mothers lose children to violence in Chicago each week, where is the outrage over their loss?  Where is the “Town Hall” assemblage of victims for them?  What of the rapes and murders committed by illegal immigrants or refugees who refuse to assimilate?  Where is the spotlight on the issue?  How about the Trillions in debt being piled on future generations?  Who will be their voice?

What are we to do?  This is not a problem only in the United States, it is an issue in all the western world where we have a supposedly free press.  Certainly, national propaganda is a given in third world nations and those where the media is tied to the government in some way.  The only antidote for the poison of propaganda and fake news is education and a desire for the truth.  Media outlets have to make money, it is up to us to not subsidize those who propagate lies.
Don’t think we cannot have an impact.  Newspaper circulation has been in a decline since the mid-1990s and ad revenue since the mid-2000s.  Network TV has been in a steady decline for the past 6 years.  In fact media, in general, has sunk to new lows.
Stay engaged, stay informed and stay active in your quest for truth.  Just as we the people are to hold politicians accountable, we must do the same to the media.  To the former, we must send home when they stray, to the latter we must make them pay with reduced revenue.
We have the power if we have the will to use it.

Gone but not forgotten, the story of Project Offset
Project Offset
The beauty of being a gamer, is that there's always a high degree of excitement for the next AAA release. The industry over the years has delivered so many new series or sequels, that regardless of the year, there's always a title to look forward to on the calender. While some games release on time, others well, get delayed a bit, and then you have some titles, pushed back years. It's a level of frustration that few can understand outside being a gamer. All the teasing, videos, images, demos, that tug on a gamers heart for years n years till the final release date, becoming a passionately exhausting roller coaster. 
Unfortunately, history has shown, there are a select few titles, despite the enormous attention and potential, will never see the light of day. None showed so much promise, potential and excitement, arguably more than Project Offset. 
Now for some of you reading, might be wondering What's Project Offset? Well, don't feel bad if you don't have a clue to what it is. Project Offset originally made its debut a decade ago. A time where YouTube was just starting, Myspace was all the rage, and service pack 3 for Windows XP wasn't a thing yet. So back then, it was actually pretty easy to overlook a new trailer or projects studios were working on. But for those who do know what Project Offset is, undoubtedly feel a slight bit of sadness towards the game that never was.

To bring you all up to speed. In 2005, a new studio by the name Offset Software demonstrated a revolutionary new engine, showcasing stunningly beautiful visuals that pretty much shocked the industry. The original demo gave several different glimpse of a Kingdom of old, under attack by unknown invaders, Dragons and Orcs. Project Offset also had a unique twist to the FPS approach as well, instead of machine guns like Halo or Call of Duty, it used crossbows, stealth and magic. The whole display screamed Lord of The Rings, which released their final film in late 2003. To quote the original video "We're making a first person shooter, set in a epic fantasy world, rendered at cinematic quality." And that was the thing,at the time, the visuals were so damn amazing, that it did appear to reach the mythical unicorn, a video game that had the visuals of a big blockbuster Hollywood film - The ultimate wet dream for a gamer. 
On-line debates of fans posting comparison pictures of the Orcs from Lord of The Rings and the Orc shown in the Offset Demo are still fresh in my mind. Though the difference was still clear that Hollywood, still several steps ahead, but everyone agreed, this has been the biggest jump towards a cinematic presentation then ever before. However - not everyone was convinced. The Gaming industry has been plagued by fake "real time" demos and constant PR bullshots for decades, why should this be any different? Especially when very little was known about Offset studios, not to mention its very small size. The few staff members that we knew were Sam McGrath, Travis Stinger and Trevor Stringer, who all previously worked for S2 Games. 
For the most part, Offset Studios was an enigma, despite all the red flags, everyone was too busy drooling over the gorgeous videos and images. 
If Offset Studios was famous for its Project Offset demo, then it was equally famous for how little information they ever gave out and their silence. Which made it incredibly frustrating for its fans. There was no twitter to make cryptic tweets, or a blog to leave little nuggets of info on how the development going, wouldn't appear till years later. Nope. Nothing. The only place, where you could get the slightest glimmer of anything Offset related was on the official website forum. Which had its own unique community, that grew over the course of Offset life, creating its own distinct culture. The lack of any information didn't stop the devoted to scrubbing through every single frame of the few videos released and discussing any tidbit of graphical hardware related to Nvidia or ATI. 
They worshiped various Idols, none so more famous than the fabled Teapot, the holy grail of the game. Some believed the Teapot would be the final boss. An unstoppable foe which could summon the very fabric of life, creating a sea of monsters to fight. All hail the Teapot! Joking aside, random objects fans happened to spot from the demos soon became viral. For instance the Teapot I was talking about, one of the videos showed a room filled with little trolls running around, and at the corner of the screen, you could see a 3D Teapot model in the background, that seemed all the trolls were appearing from. Little things like this, gave this little corner of the internet life, as fans waited hand and foot for any crumb to devour. 
Offset Software living up to their reputation of remaining silent, leaving fans empty, with hardly any details given - For years. Rumors of the entire project were nothing more than smoke and mirrors continued to grow and the online community numbers would continue to whittled down to only a few active members left. Project Offset, the most promising looking title had all but vanished. Until one fabled day in early 2007, a leaked video showcasing entirely new artwork and video footage spilled out onto the interwebs. Causing an eruption of hype, the game was real and more importantly, it was alive. Though, despite the warm feedback from the community, it seemed the higher staff was not happy at all about the video being leaked. Supposedly, it was made for internal purposes only. Official quote the man himself: It has come to our attention that a video we made for internal purposes was leaked and is being spread around. Again, this video was for internal use only and we didn't intend to release it publicly. We'd like to request that news sites, please not post this video - Sam McGrath.
Of course, this only leads to further speculation and rumors surrounding the game. Why create an internal video demonstrating the game to such a small staff size? Are they aware of what they're working on? The video is getting fantastic attention and praise, why try to remove it? Something was amiss with Offset Software, which, of course, continuing their fine reputation. Went underground, Again. 
The world of Project Offset remained silent once more for some time until an unthinkable bombshell scenario hit. Intel, the giant semiconductor, CPU making beast, in early 2008 - purchased Offset Software. It was the shot that rang across the world kind of moment. Why did Intel have any remote interest in a software gaming company? Well, if you recall, years and years ago, Intel had great interest getting in the GPU market, to rival against Nvidia or ATI. Working on their own card under the code name Larrabee. Intel GPU was supposed to deliver unheard of gaming performance, showcasing real time Ray tracing, which was unheard of at the time. So, if you had an unbelievable graphic card, what better than to pair it up with an unbelievable game, Project Offset. 
Naturally, everything about was met with mix emotions. More red flags continued to be raised and speculation about the earlier leaked internal video was originally made to pitch to Intel to seal a deal. While others felt relief that Offset Software now resting on the shoulders of Intel would have all the resources needed and time to develop the game. As for a while, people began to wonder, if this game was ever going to see the light of day...
Thankfully, Offset Software started to release a few additional demos and pictures, showcasing other interesting tidbits of their engine. Giving hope that the project was well alive and the partnership with Intel looked to be a fantastic match made. A complete 180 from a company, previously famous for being so tight lipped. A steady flow of information continued to dip out throughout 2008 and early 2009. A promising sign that the development was going well, and fans began to speculate that Offset Software was getting ready to completely unveil the game from their shroud of mystery and even possibly a release date. The game been in development for several years now, surely something should be coming.
Then everything went quiet. 
Did the company go back to their traditional ways? Was Project Offset deep in development Hell? Were things going sour with Intel? Regardless of rumors floating around. Things didn't feel right. 
Sadly, in early July 2010. Intel canceled their Larrabee project and scrapping everything connected to it. Including Offset Software, which at the same time disbanded. For any fan, who follows a game in development for years and years, this is, without any argument the very worst possible scenario. Gone, done. Goodbye. There was no Larrabee, no Offset studio, and Project Offset will forever remain nothing more than a video, sitting on YouTube. 
After the disbanding of Offset Software, few details are known what happened with the original staff. Several employees split ways left to do their own thing while a portion of the staff joined together to create a new company Adhesive games.  Who already have one release under their belt Hawken, A title you can play right now. While the former Offset leads created a new smaller company Fractiv, making mobile App games. 
Questions piled up after the fateful day, fans who chased after Project Offset was left with very little closure. No one would get any answers until a post on Fractiv website giving a few details, relating to the ending with Intel and showing off a few pieces of Project Offset:

As many of our fans already know, Project Offset was cancelled. The graphics hardware it was being designed for did not ship and our game was a casualty of this. The IP and Engine are property of Intel so its future is out of our hands. We have tried working with Intel to obtain the rights and there are some good people there who have made some effort to help us, but without success. We would like to thank all those who supported us and the project. We learned some good lessons along the way and met some incredibly talented people who we are fortunate enough to call our friends"
So with that, answered several questions relating to the fate of Project Offset and Intel. On that same blog, Sam shared a portfolio reel piece that belonged to one of the animators who worked on Project Offset showcasing never before seen footage, including a few brief pieces that included audio, showing the game was at the stage of voice acting. Sadly, that would be the last piece shown of Project Offset for several years...
Until last year, a sound engineer who previously worked with Intel, posted a few videos, all never before seen footage of stages and enemies, including a few boss fights, showcasing that the game was indeed in playable form. Answering one of the age old question, was the game smoke n mirrors, or was it legit? Seeing these final videos, shows, that Project Offset was indeed real and at some point playable. 
Despite its age, the game still looks gorgeous, the atmosphere and detail is top notch, I would be so bold to say, lives up to today's titles on the current consoles. A little rough around the edges, but that should be a true testament to just how unbelievable this game was when it made its debut a decade ago. A title with graphics that would be several consoles ahead. It's a tragic story, what could of been, to imagine not only how great Project Offset could of been, but what Offset Software could of done next.

If you want more where that came from, the Gunn Center for the Study of Science Fiction lists lots of additional resources for sci-fi readers and writers, while Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America is a must-join organization for writing professionals in the genres.
Fantasy Writers You guessed it: this is a site for fantasy writers (and readers) to read and participate in forum discussions, find updates, read other people’s stories (including ones by published authors), and explore resources to help the writing process. There’s also a monthly writing challenge. You have to sign up to see stories others have submitted, but if you want to find a community of fellow fantasy writers, it’s worth your time.
