Hi there! Hope you’re well and not melting away in the humidity. I am super excited to be planning a trip to Japan again after almost four years away. Considering I lived 1) in Kansai-ish territory and 2) near Nagoya, I never got much chance to explore Tokyo outside of the usual tourist places. I already have Jinbocho on my list (along with one of the Aoyama flower market tea houses and Nakano Broadway)— do you have any suggestions for what’s fun in Tokyo for someone who is a little more experienced with the area?
Welcome back!
Now here's a challenge! I don’t know whether you're looking for new & trendy, or old & traditional, and a lot depends on the season, but…
1) Stroll from Ueno Park or Nezu to Yanaka and Sendagi. See if you can find Snake Street and follow its curves. Yanaka is as Kyoto as Tokyo gets. Yanaka and Kagurazaka.
2) Shibamata for more old Edo vibes. Cross the river on the ferry. Only ferry in Tokyo.
3) Sunamachi Ginza Shopping District in Koto-ku: another old area that's being transformed by gentrification.
4) Get lost in Shibuya Station, just for fun, but take tranquilizers with you. Walk from Shibuya via Shoto to Yoyogi Park. Shoto is one of the wealthiest areas in Tokyo, but it's not as famous as, say, Azabu-Juban or Denenchofu. Stop at Levain for bread and Fuglen for coffee.
5) Explore the swanky, hipsterish areas of Kichijōji, Shimokitazawa, Daikanyama. Take the Setagaya Tram Line from Sangenjaya to Gotokuji and visit the temple birthplace of the famous maneki-neko. Lots of tiny shops and quaint shopping streets in a relatively upmarket area along the way.
6) Okutama. Walk along the Mitake Valley Riverside Trail, from Ikusabata to Sawai, stop for sake at the Sawanoi Sake Brewery, visit the Gyokudo Museum. You can continue past Mitake to the Okutama Fishing Centre. If you are here in autumn, you'll see breathtaking autumn colours.
7) Yokohama! Not exactly Tokyo, but a nice day trip. Minato-Mirai, Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery (no, seriously, Google it), Sankeien Gardens.
I'm not a food expert, but there are really nice restaurants in all these areas. Add Yakitori Alley in Yurakucho to your list: great atmosphere. (There's a maze under the tracks between Yurakucho and Shimbashi. Well worth a visit, but it gets a bit dystopian.) Museums? Fukagawa Edo Museum in Kiyosumi, all the art museums in Ueno Park. Plants 'n stuff? Yumenoshima Tropical Greenhouse Dome. Shinjuku Gyoen remains my favourite Tokyo park/garden.
It's very touristy, but so iconic that it's really worth it: New York Bar and Grill in the Park Hyatt Tokyo. Expensive though. Cocktail Works is a craft gin bar in Kanda (close to Jimbocho), and a very good alternative (but without the glorious view) (which is the whole point) (actually).
Oh, by the way, Piss Alley in Shinjuku? So yesterday. Try Sankaku Chitai in Sangenjaya or Nogecho in Yokohama instead. Shh, don't tell anyone.
Best free and still relatively uncrowded view of skyline: Bunkyo Civic Center observation lounge. Shh again.
Would this suffice? If you send more details about your timing and what you're interested in, I'll happily add more.
Enjoy the planning as much as the trip! 😊

The Castles, Shrines, And Temples Of Japan
The Great Buddha was preceded by a wood monument of the identical granduer that took 10 years of fixed labor to complete. Today's landmark took its place after being damaged in a storm again in 1248. Near the main shrine's entrance is certainly one of the area's most picturesque attractions, Sorihashi Bridge , which arches high arch over the still, reflective pond. Similar to Meiji Jingu in Tokyo, throughout hatsumode, the times surrounding the New Year, Sumiyoshi Taisha becomes one of the most popular websites in the nation. Buddhist structure in Japan just isn't native, but imported from China and different Asian cultures over the centuries with such constancy that the building kinds of all Six Dynasties are represented. Its history is, as a consequence, dominated by Chinese and other Asian methods and types on one aspect, and by Japanese unique variations on those themes on the other. Such well-known temples as Kiyomizu-dera, Enryaku-ji and Kōtoku-in are temples which use the described naming sample. my short answer is that you’re gonna want to budget A Lot!! i definitely spent more than i was planning to. so i was in japan for about a week – tokyo ~5 days and then bopping around osaka and kyoto and nara for 2 days. i paid for a lot of gen’s stuff while we were there so my numbers are definitely skewed but t b h high balling it is not a bad idea in this case! i’m gonna break it up a bit. including everything seen below, i spent about $2500
travel - ahead of timevancouver to seoul rt through air canada was about $800incheon to narita, then osaka to incheon through jeju air was about $225
lodging - ahead of timei stayed at a capsule hotel for two nights and it was great!! it was about $55 usdstayed at an air bnb in shibuya for four nights $110 per personi forget how much the place in osaka was lol but it couldnt have been more than $50 for two nights
everything elsei dont have the energy to go through everything in my bank statements and divide it up but i spent a total of $1336 while in japan. again, this is conflated b/c i would do things like pay for other ppl’s food and fun stuff and what have you AND… god… we ran into some chaos leaving osaka and missed our flight so i spent like over $100 on a taxi to the airport etc etc
but food is pretty reasonably priced, conbinis are fuckin excellent and its beyond easy to find food under or around $10. transport is tricky and can really add up quick! if you’re planning to travel a lot, get a japan rail pass – you have to buy that before you go to japan. but we took one shinkansen/bullet train and it was around $125 or so i believe. there are multiple subway companies and you can use the same pass (passmo!!! my little friend. or suica. but i love passmo) for all of them but be careful – if you are going somewhere and take two different trains there, ie. first half is on a jr train, second half is on a tokyo metro train, you will get charged for two separate trips b/c theyre not the same company
we also did a fancy boy thing which i recommend EVERYONE does which is go to the park hyatt’s twilight time which is a time from 5p-8pm nightly where u spend ~$45 as a cover charge and then get unlimited drinks and food and theres a live dj most of the time and ur also on like the 40th floor of a beautiful building and can see all of tokyo and its… unreal
also im looking at my statement and it looks like i spent $175 on a single outing at some point and i have no idea when or where lol. EDIT: OMG wait this was because i went to the lush spa in tokyo. nailed it. worth it. tokyo was a trip and i want to go back immediately but i definitely put quite a bit of this on my credit card and havent been able to pay it back yet so ;-) lets get there first lol

Trip to KYOTO, August 2020 - Day1
Tumblr media
(Real) Day 1 of our trip to Kyoto. I left my friend in the bed alone in the morning and went for a walk to eat breakfast. After that, we moved to the hotel, took a walk, and then went to the hotel's bar, Bar KOHAKU, where I was definitely going to go to.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media

Tumblr media
■Bar

Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
