#3 ~ the shining pearl adventure part I; meet the team

ok so recently i've made it my mission to complete all the mainline pokemon games that i never got around to completing. i usually play through each game as they come out and via the 3ds eshop i was able to play rby and gsc. the only ones left for me to complete were usum and bdsp--both of which i got around launch but neither of which i finished.

i finished my usum playthrough in mid-january. it was a lot of fun and i forgot how much i missed alola and its pokemon. then i was off for yet another journey through sinnoh; one of the dozens and dozens i've taken during my lifetime.

as i write this, i just beat byron and im in the middle of the battle with team galactic at lake verity. i thought i'd give a quick intro to each member of the team to start off...

ok so for clarification, i like to use naming themes for pokemon playthroughs. the theme for this playthrough is U.S. states (my trainer's name is D.C.--as in Washington D.C.).

so here is hawaii the empoleon. piplup has always been one of my favorite starters (though it's always been a distant second to chimchar, my beloved, who was the very first pokemon i ever obtained and used in my whole life). and even though i was never too wild about prinplup (who is, to be fair? prinplup fans please sound off in the replies i'd love to know if ur real) i've always though empoleon was such a sick design (king triton x napoleon x emperor penguin looking mfer, hell yeah). but even though i've played through sinnoh games literally over like 20 times in my life, i always end up choosing chimchar as my starter. i overcame the urge here in BDSP and decided to finally give piplup a shot. so far, good old hawaii has not disappointed me so far! surf + flash cannon + aqua jet + charm has been a crazy good combination that makes him very versatile.

i like to have little headcanons for each of my mons; my idea for hawaii's personality is that he is the kind of stuffy, proud leader of the team who takes his role very seriously. he's a bit full of himself but he has a heart of gold. luv u!

next is california the kadbara. after being a dead weight abra for much of the early game he finally evolved and has become perhaps the team's best damage dealer. after he got psychic and dazzling gleam from the veilstone dept store, nothing's been able to stop him since. i'm keeping him unevolved both because i kinda prefer kadabra to alakazam and because i'm too lazy to do the trade evo.

the abra line have always fascinated me due to their crazy dex entries. many of them mention this seemingly persistent urban legend that there was like this kid...with psychic powers...who turned into a kadabra? it's bizarre. take a look at this entry from the LA dex.

"There are rumors that a child with mystical powers became a Kadabra; however, this remains unverified. I suspect that the spoon Kadabra holds enhances its brain waves."

this is prof. laventon writing this, btw, in the sinnoh of like 200 years in the past. so apparently this is some kind of very old folk tale, i guess.

i also love the usum dex entries for alakazam...

US: "Alakazam uses its psychic powers to make the spoons it carries. Each spoon is an original that there's only one of in the whole world."

this one is funny to me cause of the "each spoon is an original" line. i like to imagine each alakazam decorates their spoon in different ways. but even more funny (and oddly wholesome) is the UM entry...

"If it trusts someone deeply, it will let them have one of its spoons. Anything you eat with that spoon is apparently delicious."

THIS! this is one of my favorite dex entries in the whole series. so stupid but still strangely sweet. idk if it's implying that the spoon that alakazam makes and gives to you makes things actually tastes better by enhancing the flavor (somehow) or if the trainer's bond with alakazam that the spoon symbolizes makes all food eaten with it taste nice...but either way it's hilarious and i love it.

sorry i'm getting off track...

anyways, headcanons for cali; he's kinda like the group's hippie dad always giving sage advice, wisdom, and guidance to the others. very laid back and chill dude. he'd definitely let D.C. borrow his spoon if she needs to eat some ceral.

here's perhaps my favorite team member, georgia! i love pachirisu (in fact i love all the pika clones, maybe that's a bit of a controversial opinion but idk i love them, keep em coming game freak). i typically try to use pokemon i've never used before in my playthroughs, but when it comes to pokemon like pachirisu i make an exception just cause F*CKIN LOOK AT HER MAN SHE'S MY F*CKIN GEORGIE WEORGIE!

anyways, georgia! she's pretty cool. i imagine she's kind of like D.C.'s equivalent of ash's pikachu, riding around on her shoulder, sort of the team mascot. she's very chipper, energetic, and always eager to fight. i want to try and collect a bunch of ribbons on her and turn her into a contest star, but i am absolute trash at the contests in this game so idk if that's possible...we'll see. i'll probably tackle that in the post game.

here's another mon i've been meaning to use for a long time but never found the chance; michigan the cherrim! i've always loved the cherubi line, and i like that cherrim is basically just an emo eggplant. that's my headcanon for michi; she's very sad and mopey and listens to a lot of midwest emo. but she totally changes personality when she changes form after using sunny day and becomes super hyper active and peppy.

i was tempted to name her new mexico (cause she is a hot air balloon) but then i remembered drifloon's super cool fun and family friendly dex entries, like this one...

"It is whispered that any child who mistakes Drifloon for a balloon and holds on to it could wind up missing."

so i knew i had to name her missouri cause it sounds like misery (and yes i was thinking about this video when i did that)

but anyways, missy is very chill despite what the dex might claim. she's pretty quiet, serene, and relaxed. she'll occasionally take D.C. and the other pokemon on trips into the sky (everyone loves these except hawaii who is terrified of heights). not much to say about her she's a pretty low key team member who is always contributing a lot to battles.

and the final team member is oregon the ursaring (yes, yes, i know i should have named him california instead). i was surprised to run into a teddiursa in the grand underground as i didn't even know you could find national dex mons down there before the post game. i thought 'hey i've never used an ursaring in a playthrough so why not?' my headcanon for oregon is that he's kind of the group's grumpy mama bear, very cranky and overprotective of the other members of the team and D.C. she and michigan know each other from their days together as wild pokemon in the grand underground, and oregon actually helped to raise and protect michigan as she was growing up, so the two have an adoptive father-daughter relationship going on.

alright, that's the team so far! look for more entries about my bdsp team! i won't be posting every step of our adventure in detail but i'd like to share more info about what happens to my team as we go on.

Ohohoh lets go

For electric type, I think my fav will go to Raichu, idk why, but Ive always like Raichu more than the pokemon mascot, I think I like Raichu's colors and tail design more?

As for the gym team:

Luxray, luxray enjoyers rejoice, I think it would be the Ace

Manectric, kind of the same vibe as luxray, hence why I like both a lot

Rotom (fan), rotom has always had a fun design, I picked his fan form here for the ground attack immunity, teehee

Toxtricity, both forms are cool, I think there's a reason why it's one of the most popular pokemon of the latest gen, plus I can't resist a good bass or guitar, some of my favorite songs have bass or guitars in them

Galvantula, electric/bug type is a cool typing and again, I think I base most of my choosing on how cool I think pokemon are, and galvantula is preeeetty cool

Eelektross, unstoppable

As for steel, I think it would be cheap to answer bisharp again so... Dialga :)

For gym pick:

Empoleon, my beloved, second favorite starter of them all, if I can't pick the cyndaquil line, the piplup line is always next, the Ace

Scizor, very similar to bisharp, design wise, and just very cool looking in general

Aegislash, the design? cool. It's a possessed sword and shield, whats better than this. Then I really like the changing form mid battle gimmick, and it's one of the coolest shinies

Aggron, I've always had a big affection for aggron, idk again the design has the right edge to it, the colors are neat to look at...

Duraludon, I'll admit, the main reason why I like duraludon is because he has the Dialga steel/dragon typing, I'm not actually that fond of the design, but it grows on you

Corviknight, I love that its a really really big scary metal bird

#almost all of my favorite pokemon are more on the cool side than on the cute side #and since i based my judgement on how cool they look. you bet those teams wouldnt be very good competitively #but hey. when youre a gym. youre meant to give badges to people. theyll just get to look at my cool 'mons in the meantime #thecindercrow #ask meme

oof forget top 5 pmd characters THIS is the hardest question

1. rowlet — i love owls, i love grass types, i love ghost types, and i think archery is cool even though i suck at it so rowlet was made for me. it's round. rotund, even. spherical!! if they make another pmd game you KNOW im going to be rowlet PLEASE NINTENDO

2. oshawott — i absolutely adore oshawott. its an OTTER!! it's so cute!! it's got a little shell on its belly!! also i always pick oshawott hero when i play gates so. i am very biased but that's fine i love oshawott 100/10 starter

3. turtwig + chimchar — i can't pick between these two ;-; i love grass types and turtwig was my second sinnoh starter (it's a whole story) and my most beloved pokemon oc has an infernape on her team so there's just no way i can pick a favorite here (i do like piplup too im just not as attached)

4. chikorita — objectively the worst starter to use in johto BUT THAT'S OKAY. chikorita is a trooper. a QUEEN. i always choose her as a partner when i play explorers. also in my last playthrough i found the tm for solar beam in the dungeon before groudon so. easiest time of that fight i've ever had

5. axew — not a starter by main series standards but come on. dual chop and dragon dance?? absolutely broken. and ofc i always pick axew as my partner when i play gates! how can i not!! very babey 10/10 (also haxorus looks cool as fuck)

honorary mention — shinx bc it is a pmd starter and ALSO my favorite pokemon (the whole shinx line is really) im going to emulate sky one of these days and play as a shinx and that's a promise
