mc #1 causes problems for fun - as in corruption exposing, government destabilizing type problems that result in a lot of very not fun people coming after them every other minute. included within those very not fun people are several well-known contract assassins, one of whom is named choi san. the first time he comes after mc, mc throws him off the side of a building, and this is the exchange they have with hongjoong after:
hongjoong, tending mc's wounds: so do you remember anything about this one mc: I mean he was really hot hongjoong: ... mc: like you know. most of the assassins are pretty built. but this one had a face to match the body after I ripped off the mask hongjoong: mc: hongjoong: noted. so what did you do to him, again? mc: oh yeah. I threw him off a building
(copied verbatim from my notes)
san compares mc to something like a cockroach, by the way. very annoying. very hard to kill. at some point mc is bleeding out and san just yells why won't you fucking DIE and mc just says well I threw you off a building first so look who's talking and maybe san doesn't know it yet because he's a dense fuck but that marks the point where he's starting to view mc less as a target and more as a person. which is an issue, as san finds out - it's kind of hard to have semi-friendly or at least admirable feelings for the person you've been charged to kill - but he's got a job he's been charged to carry out and now he needs to decide which is more important - the thorn in his side who keeps feeling less like a thorn and more like a friend, or the people who could have his head on the line any second.
(I have more plans than I'm revealing here but feel free to imagine what's next)
.
when mc #2 was young, they lost yeosang. he disappeared one day and never found his way back, and mc has been searching for him ever since while actively dismantling several illegal organizations along the way. this gets the attention of those who have since turned yeosang into a more or less mindless killer, and out of fear that mc will ruin them next, they give yeosang a hit. for mc.
except mc already knows that the organization has yeosang and have been trying to find a way to break in ever since they found out. so when yeosang turns up in mc's presence, ready to go in for the kill, mc only runs up to him and gives him a hug, all the while sobbing into his chest.
wouldn't it be so upsetting if yeosang's memories were wiped so that he remembers nothing about his life before he became an assassin?
but he plays it cool, of course - he doesn't stab mc right then and there because it's a very awkward position and he's kind of worried that mc's not in their right mind, maybe he got the wrong person on accident - so he plays along. it's easier to kill someone when you've gotten a little (physically) closer, right? and it goes fine at first, pretending to know mc from a life he doesn't remember, but as time goes on, things get harder and harder to hide. mc begins to suspect things. yeosang keeps finding openings to kill them and failing to carry out the hit. and one day during a dance in a raving bar where no one can see or hear them, they come to an ultimatum.
(you can decide what happens next :))
.
when the scientist who created the memory wiping serum realized what it was being used for, they went rogue from the corrupt government officials who had stolen their research and worked the rest of their life to find a cure. mc #3 was their assistant, their protege, and when they were caught and killed at the hands of the hitmen sent after them, mc took over their work.
hongjoong has too many people in his life that he could lose at any minute. it comes as part of the job, heading a small underground ring of vigilantes who do their absolute best to expose the corruption of government officials at the highest levels, but after growing close to so many friends, there comes a point where he decides no more. but then he meets the scientist, and then he meets mc, and when the scientist turns up dead he has to take mc in, if only for a while - seonghwa's safe house is full and mc needs a place to work. even after mc finds their own place and leaves, hongjoong is the only one who knows memory-wiped people that are willing to let mc test their serums, so they have to keep in contact. and he tries, he tries so hard to keep it a partnership and nothing more, but when mc doesn't show up to one of their scheduled meetings and hongjoong finds them left for dead on a sidewalk...
that's when he realizes he's a little too far gone to let them go.
(happy ending? sad ending? who knows. use your imagination :))
.
mc #4 is an artist with an eidetic memory, invaluable to hongjoong's little band of vigilantes for their ability to remember and draw everything they see down to the tiniest detail. they do spy work for the group, mostly scoping out faces and listening to conversations, but hongjoong tries to keep them away from the action - their hands and memory are too valuable to lose.
wooyoung is a gremlin who somehow knows everything about anyone and anything, selling information to all sides all the while toeing the line between truth and dishonesty except to those for whom he truly cares. hardcore swiftie - if you interrupt him in any of his recitals for any reason he will cut you in half. the only exceptions are for his loved ones, of which one is mc.
which is good, because when mc gets caught one day and their kidnappers break their hands, wooyoung definitely isn't too preoccupied with Taylor to exact a little revenge.
(one exchange between mc and their kidnappers:
kidnappers: good luck drawing us without your hands mc, wheezing: bold of you to assume I can't draw with my feet)
revenge isn't only wooyoung's, by the way. mc managed to escape the kidnappers with two broken hands. they're quite resourceful and quite spiteful. there's a lot that they could do :)
(can you tell by now how much I love this universe?)
