#20. things you said that I wasn’t meant to hear for Emmett & Rosalie?
Emmett certainly wasn’t a serious person, and rarely had to ask for advice. So Carlisle was confused yet grateful when Emmett asked if they could go on a hunt together. It was the first time he had seen the younger, stronger vampire look nervous.
They ran through the woods, heading to one of their favorite spots. It was close, but far enough that they could get a good run in. Their trip was quiet, as Emmett couldn’t figure out where to begin and Carlisle was letting him gather his thoughts before beginning.
“I have a question,” Emmett finally said. They had slowed to a walk, looking for a suitable place to hide for prey.
“I hopefully have an answer. What’s on your mind?” He stopped when Emmett did, the latter squatting against a tree. Carlisle knelt next to him, both men concealed by a large boulder and plants tangled in the tree’s roots.
“How, um… you and Esme.” He took a deep breath. It wasn’t necessary, but helped calm his nerves. “How did you start… start dating?”
Carlisle let out a small chuckle, a twinkle in his eye. “Oh, it took us a while. Your mother had, well, she needed time, and I wanted to give her the space she needed. But I loved her from the moment I saw her, and I fell more daily. Edward told me later he wanted to explode; we both had such strong feelings and refused to act. We went on a walk one day and Esme just took my hand. It felt different, somehow. We escalated from there.”
“Ma made the first move? Nice!” Emmett said with a low whistle.
Carlisle rolled his eyes, but didn’t fight his fond smile. “Yes, yes she did. Why do you ask? Has someone caught your eye? It might be… risky, I suppose, to date someone at the school. But if you feel confident, we can offer support. Alice can keep an eye-”
“No, it’s not like that,” Emmett interrupted, looking away.
“Oh. Well, there must be someone? I presume these nerves are not due to the deer?”
Emmett grinned awkwardly, then stood. He paced between the trees as Carlisle watched. Eventually, he stood and placed a hand on his son’s shoulders. Emmett stopped and took a deep breath. “I think I’m in love with Rosalie,” Emmett said. “Wait, no. I know I’m in love with her,” he corrected.
Carlisle grinned widely. “I thought I noticed you two growing closer.” He put his arms around Emmett’s shoulder and they began to walk back to the house, their hunting trip forgotten. “Do you think she feels the same for you?”
“I don’t know.” Emmett shrugged.
“Do you have experience from your human life? I haven’t heard you talk much about it.”
“It’s over now. A little, I think? I definitely did more than my fair share of flirting. But nothing serious. Nothing… real.”
Carlisle smiled. “I think you should tell her, son. Eternity is a long time to go with regrets.”
Emmett stopped, they were pretty close to the house by now. “What if she says no?”
“It’ll hurt. But what if she says yes?”
Emmett’s chuckle was nervous. “I haven’t thought that far ahead. I can’t really get past how much I care for Rose.”
“There’s value in letting people know that even if it doesn’t end how you want.” He checked his watch. “I’m sorry to cut this talk short, but I’m afraid I must get ready for my shift. Are you alright?”
“I think so. For now, anyway. Thanks for the advice.”
“Anytime, Emmett.” Carlisle said as he jogged towards the house. Emmett smiled in response, then began walking along the perimeter of their yard, muttering under his breath, trying to determine the right words to say.
Rosalie stood up from where she had been helping Esme in her garden. They couldn’t have noticed how close she was. The far end of the garden was right alongside the forest but rarely visited by anyone other than Esme. their voices had been just loud enough.
Maybe Esme wouldn’t be the only one to make the first move.
