It's that time of year again! My garlic chives are blossoming so I gathered them up. Washed them thoroughly. Ran them through the salad spinner so that I didn't water down my vinegar. Mashed them unceremoniously into a mason jar and covered them with white distilled vinegar. Then I let it set for at least 24 hours and it turns the most gorgeous color. The smell is fantastic, but it tastes even better. This vinegar is a real treat on a fresh salad, especially one that I have grown myself. I planted six different varieties of lettuce this year. Which is something I never thought I would say ever because I used to be of the opinion that lettuce was useless. The equivalent of cheap filler. But that's because I had only ever had commercially grown lettuce, and it wasn't the best. Then I grew lettuce myself one year and completely changed my own mind. It's amazing how much better things taste when they are freshly harvested. So I will be saving this wonderful vinegar for my lettuce and I will enjoy it thoroughly. Happy Thursday my friends. It was a gorgeous day in Pennsylvania. It was also a very productive day. I added two more solar panels to my setup and that maxes out what I can add without installing an additional inverter. Which eventually I will just not right now. With prices going up up up on everything lately I thought this would help a little bit. I also took the old wheels off my garden cart and put on new anti-flat tires because I got sick of having to inflate the old ones every single day. The new tires were definitely worth it to rid myself of that frustration everyday. There's a whole list of other things I got done today but I won't bore you with all that, also I'm just too tired to type it out. I'll be heading to bed tired, sore, and happy tonight. In an effort to not waste any of this abundance I've been stewing and canning tomatoes with zucchini. I finally managed to get through the rest of my plum tomatoes and zucchini but as you can see from the pictures I have quite a few cherry tomatoes still in the process of ripening. There are only so many tomatoes a person can eat in a day so I had no choice but to preserve them as best I can. These stewed tomatoes are not only absolutely gorgeous but delicious too. Shockingly so because I didn't do anything fancy. I just threw them in a pot and added onion, garlic, and salt. In the depths of winter these will taste like sunshine. They're so pretty they make me happy just to look at them. Have a beautiful Tuesday my friends. It's supposed to frost tonight so I had to pick tomatoes. Green or ripe it didn't matter they all have to come out of the garden. I filled three 5 gallon buckets with tomatoes and I sent one bucket to the neighbors. I didn't even give them a chance to beg for mercy, I just sent them over with their kids. I really hope they forgive me, but desperate times call for desperate measures. I might have to stew some of these and can them. I've already foisted garden produce off on everybody who doesn't run away when they see me and a few people who do. I'm not sick of tomatoes yet because I love tomatoes but I have a feeling I might eventually get there. I'm still not complaining though. It's tomato season in Pennsylvania, and I am drowning. I spent the day canning and then tonight when I went out to do chores I picked another bucket full of tomatoes. I didn't even get them all, I was just focusing on the little yellow cherry tomatoes because they go bad quickly. They are also delicious. I still have beefsteak tomatoes out there and Mr stripey. I have Cherokee purple and I have an unreasonable amount of Amish paste tomatoes. I didn't intend to have this many tomatoes this year, I still have tomatoes I canned last year that I haven't used yet. I only planted a few, the vast majority of this is from volunteers. Even though I did not intentionally plant these I still can't let them go to waste. I have given away bags of tomatoes (and zucchini but mostly tomatoes) to family and friends and pretty much anybody I can hand them off to and I'm still drowning. I'm not complaining, it's a wonderful problem to have and as always I am grateful for the abundance. So it begins... I only planted two zucchini plants that I had to pick up at the store because something killed the first ones. I planted them late thinking that if I got anything from them it would be well worth it. I wasn't expecting much so when I saw those first blossoms I celebrated just a little bit. Then the plants got bigger, there were more blossoms, and the zucchini started coming. Zucchinis that were four inches long one day were twice that by the next day and I had to pick them quickly. I've given zucchini to the neighbors and to my parents and I'm still left with this growing pile of goodness that I can't keep up with. This is just the beginning of the tomatoes as well, there are many more on the vines waiting to ripen. Just so we are clear, I am not complaining, I am humbled by my good fortune. I'm going to spend the day looking for ways to preserve zucchini and maybe I'll think of a few more people to give some to. It's always enjoyable to spread the wealth. I met this handsome boy after work today and I just had to snap his picture because he's nearly as big as my car. Him and his brother are just as sweet as they can be and I spent a few minutes telling them how gorgeous they are and giving them scritches. I go out to check on the babies every couple hours just to make sure everybody is good. Every time I go out I check their water and I clean out any pine shavings that have gotten into it so that they have clean water to drink. When I moved the cover all the chicks run to the far side of the brooder. When I put my hand in to clean out the water dish this little sweetheart runs over and pecks me. This chick can't be more than a couple of weeks old and it's already threatening to kick my ass. I have never run into an aggressive chick before, has anybody else? I can't wait to see how this plays out. I think this one's going to shank me. It's going to be a whild ride I can tell. Happy fluffy-butt Friday my friends. First cucumber of the year. Why can't I grow normal cucumbers? Why are they always weird? Cute..but weird. I'm not really complaining, I'm grateful I can grow anything at all. My garden is a hot mess right now and I don't see it getting better anytime soon. I need to get better about spacing things further apart. Weeding would probably help too. I need a farm hand. I mean I have Sammy but he won't help me with the garden. All he does is find a shady spot and take a nap. He says he's supervising but it looks like a nap to me. Tomorrow I'll get pics of the tomatoes and the baby zucchini. Yay garden produce! But not now, now the chickens have been tucked in and the goats are settled and it's wine o'clock. Yesterday after work I went down to tractor supply and picked up chicks. Truth be told I wiped them out, because they aren't going to be getting any more this year and I took all that they had left. Unfortunately that was only nine chicks but it was better than nothing. Seven of them are my absolute all-time favourite breed buff orpingtons. Punk Rock Gladys is a buff Orofington and she is the sweetest most gentle girl in my whole flock. I'm always down to cuddle Gladys. Aren't they just the cutest things you've ever seen? This pile of twelve foot 4x4 hemlock posts has been sitting in front of my house, annoying me, for a year. Today I finally had enough of it and I decided to move them. All 23 of them. By myself. I was only going to move a few at a time but then my stubborn ass decided to just get it done. Let me tell you those things are heavy. I thoroughly wore myself out and murdered a pair of work gloves in the process but the entire pile is down under my pines (down by the goats) stacked on short pieces of wood so they're up off the ground and thoroughly tarped. What am I going to do with them? I have no idea. Yet. I'm sure they'll come in handy sooner or later though. Now I have to find something for lunch and start getting ready for work. Sometimes I wonder why I do these things to myself. I'm gonna be sore tonight for sure but it was still worth it. Actually I know why I do it, because this is my happy place and I want it to be pretty. The satisfaction of a job well done doesn't last very long though and soon I'll be on to the next project. Flowers make me happy. From the very beginning of my journey here I have wanted to grow them, in abundance enough to have cut flowers in vases for much of the growing season. Every single year I plant more. I have not regretted one penny that I have spent on flowering plants. I doubt I ever will. Now I know I'm not a professional aranger of flowers and many people I'm sure could do better, but that vase full of flowers makes me amazingly, ridiculously, unreasonably happy. Every single time I see it. Not only that but it's going to make my mother happy too. Because it's going to her house. Right now my plan is to keep adding perennial flowers every year until it becomes a complete pain in the ass just to mow around them. And let's be honest I probably won't stop there. Because I firmly believe that if a thing is worth doing, then obviously it's worth overdoing. Restraint? Who's she? She doesn't live here. Have a beautiful day my friends and go plant some flowers. Sunday is my only day off so I tend to do a lot of yard work when it's nice. You know you live in the country when you put more miles on your lawn mower than your car. I've always got company though because the chickens are always there. Watching Always watching. Chickens that are relaxed and wandering around doing what they're supposed to be doing make some god-awful noises. Most of the time they sound like something straight out of a horror film. I've been trying to record it for four years and have been unsuccessful or I would share it with you. One day though. Never mind the fact that I hear roosters crowing in my sleep now. I honestly thought that that would bother me a lot more than it does. Now silence bothers me because they are never that. The only time the crowing actually gets to me is when I'm in a small enclosed space and one of them starts screaming at the top of his lungs. That's a bit much.
