True Beauty- Prince Charming, The Knight and the Ugly Duckling
Tumblr media
Okay, let's get into it. First, I think the discourse has begun even more fiercely with the love triangle. I can see so many people complaining and crying about the treatment of Seo Jun in the show. Now I just want to say first of all that I haven't read the webtoon, it must be very upsetting to see a favourite of yours be so different and changed in an adaptation and all his good moments are given to the other guy just to make him a better lead. I get that frustration, but what can I do but analyse what the show is showing. Right now, the discourse about how toxic and creepy Suho is isn't making sense to me. I do think he is getting more hate than needed; it's fine if you're upset and hurt by how they have twisted the characters but don't come in and put all the blame on one character who isn't doing anything horrifying as everyone keeps on making it out to be. Nevertheless, I'm here to analyse the love triangle in these two episodes. I'm here to discuss more about the psychological basis of the characters, their masks, and how they show love and deal with these emotions. So without further or do let's get into this analysis, shall we?
Tumblr media
Feelings and Emotions
First of all, episode 7 and 8 was very focused on the love square building. It makes sense because all our characters are going through feelings and emotions for people who show up and be some kind of happiness and safe space to them. This is not just Ju Kyung, Suho, Seojun but also we have an addition to Soo Jin who questions her feelings and emotions as well. In my opinion, this love square can go either way; both couples in the square all have different ways they impact or change each other. Both Seojun and Suho are great matches for Ju Kyung especially, but we also have to look at it more in-depth. Why is it that at the end of these two episodes, it was always going to be Ju Kyung and Suho who ended up together, for now, no matter what? It doesn't mean SeoJun is out of the game, in fact, I think he's more closer to having a chance with her in terms of storytelling, and how it bodes for Soojin is quite foreshadowing to be negative and worrying. So let's look deeper into the love square situation and break down what is going on so far. Who are the end game couples, who's meant to be, and who's provided more evidence they should stay together. Answer no one.
Let's get to it. First of all, as much as some people want to avoid the truth about this. Suho is Kyung's, Prince Charming. She even has a fantasy about him being exactly just this to her. I mean it makes sense; everything he's done and been to her so far has been exactly what a typical fairy tale prince charming does to a girl. Let's look at all he did in episode 7 and 8 first.
Tumblr media
Protection and Care
We start off with episode 7, seeing just how protective Suho gets. Now don't get me wrong, it could be seen as possessive and invasive but as someone who has watched Kyung and her past instances with men, Suho is actually a great person to her. Not only does he protect her at the karaoke place along with Seojun and others, not only is her safety his number one priority (as he always shows in the show) but he also ensures that her self-esteem, her emotions, and her respect are taken into consideration. He goes so far to lose sleep (he doesn't have to do this it's just what he does for her) just to make sure that she is apologised to by the bullies who frightened her. He knows she's probably still shaken up about it, probably still thinking and fearful about them showing up again and that she has had an extensive experience and trauma with bullies before. So for her to see the bully show up and offer her a peace of mind that he's not coming for her again is so great to see. Now Seojun doesn't have to do this, but when the bullying happened because of her connection to him, he kind of pushed it off and moved forward like it didn't matter. But to Kyung, it probably still mattered because it was a moment she was scared about and Suho couldn't sleep right if she didn't feel safe. That's goals, in my opinion of what a boyfriend is. It's sweet that even in the car he saw that she was shaken up after the events, he showed her warmth and care just by holding onto her hands, he may be cold sometimes and tsundere but that's only because he's been forced to become that way because of his family life and environment. Which brings me to...
Tumblr media
Power and Reputation
Like a Prince, Suho has a lot of power and reputation. It's how he protects Kyung he uses his powers, his talents, his abilities to ensure the bully apologises and shows her respect. He wants to make sure she knows she deserves to be treated right because she hasn't let herself feel like she's worthy of respect for most of her life. After all,  people made her feel like her looks made her lower than that. I've mentioned in my previous analysis that Suho's reputation and power is both a gift and a curse. It's the mask he had to use to push people away when he thought he caused people to get hurt by being near him.
Again the teachers treat him differently because of the power he holds, due to his family background, this might be seen as a positive but it's actually a burden to him; there's a lot he had to go through because of this reputation, there's a lot of pressure for him to be this great person for people; like Seoyeon for example who Seojun blames him for not using his power and reputation to save his life, not just that he's also had his privacy invaded, we see in episode 8 when he and Kyung have the boat ride that he's been also traumatised by paparazzi when he was younger. He's always been seen just for his name and status and not who he really is. But what's great about prince charming here is that he uses this power and reputation each time to save Ju Kyung and show her the same devotion and respect that other people show him.
Tumblr media
The Disguise
Now the issue with episode 7 when it comes to both Suho and SeoJun is that they do this in disguise. They care for her all the time in secret, and as much as both their actions are sweet and caring and important as boyfriend material, it's quite annoying that they don't come to her and show her that they care.
Episode 7 is full of hesitation from Seojun who's coming to terms and realisation with his feelings, and episode 7 is full of misunderstandings with Suho. Suho is still slowly breaking down his walls, and his coldness has been a way to protect himself from people. So it makes sense that as much as he wants to show her, he cares he struggles with knowing how to do so. Both Seojun and Suho don't have relationship experience on how to treat the girl they like. And you see in episode 7 and 8 that Suho struggles to know how to ask her out and by the time he wants to show up and tell her, he cares he gets misunderstood and is pushed back yet again. What I like about both Seojun and Suho is that immediately they know how they feel for Kyung they try to tell her and show her. That's why I think as much as Suho is the one who was more likely to be with her at this moment, Seojun isn't far behind in taking her heart if something goes wrong.
What matters is although he first tried to be Tsundere with her, Suho changed and started to try and find her and show her he cared. He wanted to ask her out, to make her know he liked her, he stopped being cold to her after episode 7 and 8. So people crying about how cold he was to her makes no sense to me. He was cold before because that's who he is, and how he's grown up to be, but once he recognised he wanted her, he didn't do anything toxic or mean to her anymore. Instead, he stood by her side, waiting for an opportunity to show her he cared. He went lengths to protect, and show her warmth, and show her support each time she cried and needed him to. Seo Jun does that too,  which brings me to analysing these two scenes where SeoJun and Suho both are Prince Charming and the Knight in shining armour for Ju Kyung. As I keep repeating, both are reasonable boyfriend goals.
Tumblr media
Comfort and Support
One of my favourite moments this two episodes is both the crying scenes of Jukyung with the respective guy. Suho sees Kyung crying over her mum, throwing away her makeup and he also sees her beating her self up over her grades. What he does again makes me like him even more as her boyfriend, he knows she worked hard, so he makes her know that, he doesn't want her to lose her self esteem again because of what people say to her. Suho is always protecting Kyung's self-esteem; he wants her to value her self as important and useful. She scolds her self because of being dumb and ugly or whatnot and how people perceive her, and he's always on her side, making sure she knows that he doesn't see her like that. He commends her effort, and he likes her for who she is. That's why she falls for him.
Not only is he the one who takes care of her in her most vulnerable moments when she feels broken and worthless being ugly but he's also there to show her support when she feels dumb and stupid. He makes her know that she's not that, and he knows she's okay being her self. It's sweet. This is different with Seo Jun who probably makes her feel comfortable with who she is because they can bicker and be themselves with each other, but he also insults her and joins in the mocking (not meanly) of her grades and her looks. Suho always in her mind shows her unconditional support and care. He gets her ramen, and he even offers to buy her new makeup to make her stop crying. And she doesn't think she deserves him to do so because she can't fathom that he could like her. However, she still has hopes that he could because of all his actions and how much she wants him to despite situations.
Now with Seojun, he has his own moment to show her that care. She cries to him about being upset because Suho doesn't like her. He probably was going to confess to her when he met up with her, but he patiently takes care of her and wipes her tears and let's her go selflessly. It was also sweet. But it doesn't hold the same weight to Kyung the way Suho's actions does to her. Right now, Seojun is on the losing side because he doesn't know who she really is without her mask. Suho does, and he's had opportunities to show her he likes, respects and wants her without it. This is why he was always going to be the one who she gave her heart to.
Tumblr media
Friendship and Comfort
But the basis of the love triangle is friendship. Kyung and Suho not only have this need to protect and care and be there for each other, but he also knows what she likes, reads and is obsessed with even when she tries to hide it from others. She doesn't want people to know she reads the comics she does, listens to the music she does, because it doesn't match her mask of beauty and gentleness, but Suho knows all that about her because they both like the same stuff. So it's not just forced romantic feelings out of the blue that these two have had moments for, but they've been building a friendship with each other from the start, the moment he saw her and helped her when she almost jumped off the ledge in her most broken state. He's always been the person who's seen her for who she is, and the most comfortable person to speak to and be with. Now with Seojun, there's also friendship and comfort, like siblings he's also the kind of person that brings out her louder self, and she feels normal with him and comfortable because she doesn't care how he views her. So again, he still has a chance to win her heart because he also is a friend she cherishes and notices.
Tumblr media
Soojin and Suho
And it's weird and sad because everything Suho does for Kyung that I've mentioned he also does that for Soojin. He offers her the same friendship and support and comfort and warmth. He's also seen her and known her in her most broken times without her mask. It's sad to know that he probably is one of the happiest places for her to be, amidst all the trauma and abuse she receives in her life, he's probably someone she wants to latch to, to stay happy but she can't have him now because of JuKyung. This is why I feel we're foreboding a bit of a villain back story with her; I hope not because I don't want girl hate, but it does make sense if she does end up feeling she has to do something to ensure Suho doesn't leave her side. Because he's one of the most important sources of comfort to her, he makes her feel good. It's just sad that he didn't see her as that way.
Before I continue with the analysis, I want to bring up a mirror character for the couples in the show; JuKyung's mum and her dad.
Tumblr media
The problem with Kyung's mum
JuKyung's mum is a very frustrating character, and like all the adults in the show, she's lacking and also a negative person. She is callous and mean to people, especially her daughter, who she refuses to open her mind to listen to. She's not a monster, and she does love her daughter as shown when she is talking to her husband about wanting what's best for her and not seeing her as ugly, but her surface interactions with Kyung is a different story. It's ironic because her mum should be her most significant support and person to make her feel worthy since she went through the same thing her daughter went through. She's seen like Kyung as ugly, and people tell her this all the time. She managed to get a handsome husband which is something she holds on to but is insecure about. She keeps trying to control her husband by belittling all he does so that he doesn't feel above her or get distracted by other women.
It's why she's so adamant about kicking him out of her shop when he's selling candles because she noticed how women interact with him. I think the thing with her is that she used her grades to enter university, and that's where she met her husband and found her job, which she is known as the best. She wants Kyung to focus on her studies, not on how people perceive her because she thinks it's the way to secure a better life and way to be seen as worthy by others. Because she also struggled and didn't have belief in her self either. This is why she probably has built up this anger and need to criticise and put people down because they did that to her as they do to Kyung. It's her own mask and her own cover of trying to seem strong and worthy.  Why I'm seeing mirroring with them, and Kyung and Suho are because her husband dotes on her as shown in episode 8, he's just as protective and loving to her, but also he was a singer (we all know Suho is Leo).  The same unconditional, supportive and caring love that her dad shows her mum is the same Suho shows Kyung. I think that's why we saw their interaction in episode 8.
Tumblr media
Another couple that brings up the same themes in reverse is Hee Kyung and the teacher. Hee Kyung has decided the teacher is who she wants, she appreciates him and shows him that she sees him as hardworking and necessary despite him feeling worthless because he's in debt. He tries to push her away because of his lack of self-esteem (something I think Kyung will end up doing to Suho, she'll try to hide their relationship because she doesn't feel worthy being his girlfriend etc.) but Hee Kyung proceeds to keep on showing him (same steps that Suho was told to do to show Kyung how he feels) that she's there for him and loves him for who he is.
Tumblr media
Prince Charming and The Ugly Duckling
That's why episode 8 is focused on the ugly duckling. People probably brushed it off, but clues were pointing to it. Kyung calls her self the ugly duckling, and there's an ugly vengeful ghost who wasn't loved because of her looks by her husband that is out to find a new face to cover up her ugliness. It's not the fairytale of the ugly duckling that matters, but just the mental anguish in the tale the ugly duckling suffered from because of being seen as different and ugly. It's the same fears and pain that Kyung goes through this episode. She regresses from believing that Suho could possibly view her as a love interest because of Soo Jin being in his life. Soo-Jin is the pretty one, is the worthy one because she's just as smart, rich and good looking as Suho. She ends up going through the same anguish that both the ghost, ugly duckling go through feeling disappointed, hurt, frustrated with the people around them because of how they view themselves. Both the ghost who ends her life because she's felt rejected and brutally treated because of how she was born, and the ugly duckling who gets rejected, hurt, bullied and pushed away almost to his own mental death are symbols of how Kyung views her self, and what she was the most frustrated about when she cried to Suho.
It broke her to realise that she couldn't be with someone like him because she was less than Soo Jin even though he and her had something. It probably was all she thought was the reason she couldn't chase after and let him know how she felt. Plus the idea of losing this new friendship blooming with Soojin and Suho, when she didn't used to have people like them in her life before. Kyung broke down because of the realisation about how unfair she felt life was to her because of how she was born. She was going lengths to cover up who she was the whole trip, and Suho had been there protecting her and caring for her and seeing her for who she is but at the end of the day he was always going to be more in love with Soo Jin because she was the better person.
Tumblr media
Which is why again Suho without knowing or meaning to shows up to show Kyung he cares for her, for who she is, and he sees her the opposite of how she's been made to feel about her self. He buys her the swan necklace. And something touched my heart when I saw it. Like it's just like him to do that when focusing on Kyung feeling and telling her self she's the ugly duckling worthless, and below others, actually, Suho sees her as the swan, he knows who she really is, he likes he for who she really is, and he's there to remind her that the ugly duckling wasn't ugly at all but was a different species and was beautiful once he matured. He was always meant to be a swan.
And Suho buying that necklace symbolises his thoughts towards Kyung, what he does for her is just remind her that even without makeup she's still worthy and she's above the rest to him. It's the same things he's done the whole episode 7-8; he fights to show her she's meant to be respected, meant to be loved (when her mum doesn't show her that), meant to be valued and meant to be seen for who she is. That's why he was always going to be the one to end up with her by the end of this episode.
Tumblr media
Boyfriend Material
Like I said Seojun's bracelet is sweet because it's all he can give and so it's also good because he's just again being himself and being authentic towards her. For him and Kyung, it's always authenticity, comfort and warmth. But when it comes to Suho it's more than that, he sees her. He makes her love her self, not because he likes her don't get me wrong she doesn't need a guy to make her love her self, but he's the person who shows up as a reminder, the person behind the scenes who's always making her realise that she's just okay being her self. That's why she calls him a fairytale. In the end it's nice to have a prince who's rich (the necklace was expensive), powerful, and protective but Suho is more than just that to Kyung, he's her strength, her support and the one person who makes her feel good about being her self. That's enough for her.
Tumblr media
So as much as Seojun is a great boyfriend material he doesn't have the same impact on JuKyung right now. He doesn't know the real her, even though he is great and caring and warm with her. He is just as sweet and protecting as Suho, but he's just a little bit too late. From the first time, Suho and Kyung met on that rooftop they meant more to each other. It's not just Suho who is Kyung's safe space, warmth, support etc., Kyung does the same thing for him it's vice versa, she makes him break down his walls, be vulnerable, also feel worthy (because remember he hated himself because of Seoyeon's loss). She also makes him feel seen and reminds him; he's also okay as his true self. They both do this for each other. That's why this hate towards Suho for his possessive, creepy, obsessive nature (as people call it), is uncalled for.
Suho has been made to be the cold tsundere lead because he struggles with PTSD. Yes, he needs therapy, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have a good impact on Kyung, he's not toxic to her, he's actually good for her, and he is the only person after everything we've seen her go through this whole show that makes sense to be the one that she loves.  There's still a lot of things they still have to heal from and deal with to get to the end, and perhaps Seojun would find a way to do more for her than Suho has done so far, but for now, Suho and Kyung are written to be each other's person so let's see what happens next.
Tumblr media
I really mean it when I say I don't care about this love triangle. I'm only following what the show writer and director is showing, what they are making me see. Could it be different in the webtoon and I'd support Seojun more yes, but webtoon readers; it's clear that the writers have made Suho the person they think is for Kyung, and they've stolen Seojun's moments because of this, is it right? No, of course not. But it doesn't mean the show isn't good or that Suho is a monster or whatnot. It just means you have to decide if the show is worth watching if you can't deal with what they did with it. The amount of hate Suho receives in the tags is just hypocritical in my opinion, when Seojun and Suho do the same thing with Kyung. They're both as possessive and as protective and they both have their flaws. They're both sweet to her, and caring. No one is wrong, or right as the end game. But don't be too irrational when it comes to your bias. That's all I'm saying. Anyways apart from the love triangle, True Beauty continues to be a light watch that I love and enjoy, I love the relationships and the psychological conversations that can be derived from the show. I've been through what Kyung has gone through, and I've gone through moments of seeing my self as worthless and meaningless because of how society views me or has made me think about my self. That's why I appreciate her relationship with Suho and Seojun. I really relate to her dramatics and her break downs, and I like this show for being not just light at times but also serious when it talks about what the characters are dealing with psychologically. Anway that's my analysis. Let's see what next episode brings.

true beauty.
THIS DRAMA WAS UN-EXPECTANT. HILARIOUS. CUTE. AND PRECIOUS. we got cha eunwoo, our bae. with our newest bestest boy, hwang in-yeop. and our queen, mun ka-young. what else would one need in a drama?! i was excited when they announced the creation of this drama, because like so many of us i love the webtoon. that is overlooking the faults of the basis of the theme with shallow standards of beauty, it is great. and i love our characters. i especially love how the writers of the drama utilized the great structures of the webtoon’s characters and created another world. i rate it a 10 out of 10.
Tumblr media
we follow our leading lady im ju-kyung as she overcomes bullying at her old school for being ‘ugly’. she was cast out and a ‘dumpling runner’, running around for the group of bullies. she finds a passion for makeup and masters it, becoming a new person with a ‘new face’ after putting it on. she starts life at a new school with her new face. she stumbles into an old place of comfort without her new face, the comic book store, and runs into the school prince, lee suho. this ensues with a bout of lying; unsuccessfully, because suho knows that she is the same im ju-kyung that started at his school. he protects her secret, and it leads their relationship to grow closer. we follow them through their years at high school, as she hides her face and later hiding their relationship from their classmates. this drama continues to follow them through their young adult years.
now on to the spoilers…
overall, once again i must always state that i don’t love it when they take this shallow perspective and over dramatize the conventional aspects of beauty. im ju-kyung, who is supposedly not conventionally beautiful and they dramatize her redness and pimples, etc. she does all these wild things to hide her true identity from those around her at school. thankfully the writers did not try to pull that ‘oh my goodness, i didn’t know that was you under the makeup’ game because our suho is not a shallow cookie and looks below the surface. because that game is ridiculous and i would have died. i am thankful the ending that this drama took, because i was nervous especially at the start that it was going to go the duration of the show with no-one knowing her true face, like the webtoon. thankfully we had a character revelation unfortunately not on her own timing. but she had grown as a person and had a team of people behind her allowing her to shine and overcome. we love character development. it’s great. it makes my heart happy. we started the drama with her completely swallowed whole by the perception that she wanted to portray to those around her, not showing her true beauty. because she was a beautiful person who wanted to protect those around her, and once she let go of this facade and mask she was able to fully be the person she was destined to be.
i loved suho’s character in this. he had so many layers and i love that they didn’t make it like the webtoon in this aspect. i love how their relationship started in the comic store and ended there. he grew so much, and became livelier because he knew im ju-kyung. his character was so stoic and overcome with sadness at the start. his best friend committed suicide and he blamed himself for this, which was completely out of his control. im ju-kyung showed him that it was not his fault and they came to protect one another. also love how the writers had him pursue music producing at the end, and even produced for seo-jun’s debut. he was such a great son, after him and his father finally reconnected and then he suffered a stroke, crazy! suho went to the states to care for his father. definitely lost in this, he broke up with ju-kyung as to not hold her back, which was silly and even though he was across the world they could have made it work. they’d been through so much worse, but that’s for another drama universe.
han seo-jun our brooding character with a light personality just beneath the surface. i loved seeing his character at home and with his crew, compared to walking through the school halls. (hello, ‘okey dokey yo’). his character always fiercely protected those around him and i just love seo-jun. i love that he came to pursue his career as an idol, and ended up debuting at the end. he worked so hard and deserved the world and more. and i have to say i hate the second male lead dramas, because they break my heart. he changed so much because im ju-kyung’s character grew him and challenged him in new ways. i knew seo-jun would not get the girl. i knew this from the start. did that stop me from loving his character? no. no, it didn’t. did it stop me from cheering for him, even though i loved suho? no. so who ends up heartbroken in the end with him? me. i do. so here i am weeks after the finale, thinking about how seo-jun told ju-kyung that suho was leaving for the states to  send her running after another guy, and ultimately bringing the two of them together. thinking about all those years suho was in the states, when seo-jun treasured their friendship and was with her quietly supporting her in her dreams, for her to ultimately leave for suho. sad. that’s what it is, the definition of sadness. and goodness gracious where is my seo-jun? i will love you and treasure you honey. you do not need ju-kyung, i got you boo.
i must add that hwang in-yeop can show up in my life any day, and i will graciously stop everything and marry this man. i love all of his dramas thus far, his character from the interviews i’ve seen, i love him. he is a favorite. i am expectant for the upcoming dramas he will surely steal the show in.
the friendship between seo-jun and suho was so multifaceted. i love how we saw how their relationship was before when they were a trio, and then the brokenness when seo-jun blamed suho, to then seeing them come together because they realized they both cut one another off when they should have leaned on one another instead. it was sweet and i loved their bromance moments. they truly stole the show away. it was hilarious and fun with them together. and i appreciate that the relationship between suho and ju-kyung didn’t break the two apart in the end.
Tumblr media
i need to make note how much i love im ju-kyung’s family. like her siblings were iconic. her sister im hee-kyung and her relationship with eui-sik, the homeroom teacher. ICONIC. and im ju-young, her brother, and his precious attempts at winning seojun’s sister’s heart. PRECIOUS. i would 10 out of 10 watch a spin off with the focus on these characters. i loved when ju-kyung’s mom realized all the trauma that her daughter endured how she went to mending the broken pieces to rebuild their relationship. and i love how sweet her dad was, always encouraging her dreams. and i love how they all wanted the best for her, and supported her dreams of becoming a makeup artist.
i am so sad that whenever we get a great friendship between our leading ladies they end up in awful relations at some point in the drama. our kang soo-jin and im ju-kyung were the best of friends. she even found out about ju-kyung’s secret and protected her to get back to the tent when they were on the trip. and then when ju-kyung started to date suho, soo-jin got everything twisted. i appreciate how suho let her know that no matter the situation he would not have ended up with her, because he didn’t see her in that way. and i loved the seo-jun put her in her place and confronted her for posting the photos of im ju-kyung online. i am thankful that we had the revelation for soo-jin’s character and came back to apologize to ju-kyung in the end. it was sweet and genuine. she came to see why she was like the way she was, grew from it, and apologized for her past behaviors.
i love how suho and ju-kyung’s world’s connected. from the comic book store, to high school, to her sister working at his father’s music agency. it was complete destiny that they ended up together. i love a good ‘it is destiny, it was meant to be'.
Tumblr media
the webtoon drama inception was REAL. i loved that they added those little easter eggs throughout the drama with the little connections to ‘extraordinary you’. i loved it.
favorite moments.
the flashback comic book store scenes.
the games at the camping trip.
roar...like any and all instances of this. precious.
ju-kyung confessing that she liked suho to seo-jun, and crushing my team seojun heart.
suho and ju-kyung’s first kiss.
suho daring to hand ju-kyung a cup in the elevator. ㅋㅋㅋ
seojun and suho fighting over making the best dumplings at ju-kyung’s house.
seojun showing up to help his sister, and im ju-young getting so excited that han seojun came to save the day.
im ju-kyung sticking up for herself against her new and old school bullies. like the legit fist fight and then the one when she stood up for suho. when they came for her man she was like ‘heck no, not today honey’.
seojun and suho at the hospital and having to care for each other to complete daily tasks. really brought them together again. > also this accident was super dramatic. but we love that everything was chill in the end.
im ju-young being traumatized by his eldest sister kissing her boyfriend, and then encouraging ju-kyung and suho to kiss.
tteokbokki between seo-jun and ju-kyung.
‘okey dokey yo’...ICONIC to say the least.
Tumblr media
the ost.

‘starlight’ by chani
‘love so fine’ by cha eunwoo
‘flowerpot’ originally by alex, covered by hwang in-yeop

https://push.abs-cbn.com/2020/5/8/fresh-scoops/she-portrays-the-mistress-in-world-of-the-married-25724
International artists are impossible to interview for a feature. Thus, we rely on what on what the internet has to offer. Some articles, including this one, are purely based on research from credible sources and websites.
She portrays the mistress in 'World of the Married'—but we can't hate her too much!
By Thesia May Molines
The World of the Married took the Internet by storm due to its plot twists that will surely leave you hooked and intrigued. As they binge-watch the drama series, some fans can’t help but stop and stare at the stunning girl who plays the challenging role of the mistress.
Although you’ll probably hate her character in the hit Korean series, you’ll surely be drawn to her in real life! Fans are enthralled since this young lady holds so much promise in the acting scene.
Let’s dig deeper why Han So Hee is worthy to be the next Korean girl crush:
Who is Han So Hee?
Lee So-Hee or fondly known as Han So Hee is a 25-year-old actress and model hailing from Ulsan, South Korea. She was born on November 24, 1994. So for K-drama fans that are astrology lovers as well—yes, she is a Scorpio. Those who are under this zodiac sign are known for being passionate and resourceful. No wonder she was able to portray her role in The World of The Married Couple as Yeo Da Kyung so well!
She graduated from Ulsan High School where she is known for being a timid and quiet student. In a previous interview, she shared that she went to the same school with the famous lead actress of Hi Bye, Mama! Kim Tae Hee.
She studied in Sejong University with a Major in Arts.
Before her success
Contrary to what others may believe, she didn’t have an easy life. Han So Hee had to work her way to success.
This risk-taker chose to let her schooling take a back seat to pursue her acting career at an early age. She decided to move to Seoul and try her luck with only a little amount of money in her pocket.
She had to endure days and nights of non-stop working at a bar in Gangnam to suffice her daily needs. Not wanting to live her life like that for the rest of her days, Han So Hee endured hardships until it all finally paid off.
She revealed in an interview that if she hadn’t endured those days of making ends meet by working endlessly, she would not have achieved the success she is enjoying right now.
Career Beginnings
Before making it big in the acting scene, Han So Hee already made a name for herself as a model. With an impressive height of 169 centimeters and a face that is truly a sight to behold, she became one of the most sought-after models in Korea.-
She started getting noticed in a Ritz Cracker commercial in 2016. Since then, she received numerous commercial offers from big companies. Han So Hee was also given the privilege to be in several magazine covers for some fashion magazines in South Korea.
In the May 2020 issue of Grazia, the stunning young actress shows off her charm and natural beauty in their photo shoot.
Aside from her modeling gigs, she also appeared in numerous music videos. Some of these are music videos of the famous boy band group in South Korea called SHINee in their song Tell Me What To Do and The Hardest Part by soloist Roy Kim.
The successful actress she is now
Han So Hee made her acting debut in 2017 for the drama Reunited Worlds. That opened doors for her to land several lead roles for Korean television series such as Money Flower and 100 Days My Prince.
Although she’s been around in the industry for quite some time now, It was The World of the Married that paved her way to stardom.
When she first read the script of the series, she immediately felt sorry for her character. Wanting to understand where Da Kyung is coming from, the actress had to focus and put herself in her shoes.
According to soompi.com, when the actress was asked to compare herself from the role she portrays in the drama, Han So Hee said that her character Da Kyung is reserved and aloof while she is the type who likes talking to people.
Now that she is on her way to becoming even bigger in the acting scene, Han So Hee wishes to be like her co-star Kim Hee Ae (who plays the protagonist wife). She said that after seeing her act from up close, she admired how Kim Hee Ae can portray strong characters even more.
Because of her convincing portrayal as the mistress, Han So Hee receives hate comments on her social media accounts. Thus, she jokes that hopefully one day she will land a role that everybody would love.
Social Media Presence
Han So Hee has currently over 1.6 million followers on Instagram as of writing. It is where she posts photos of her daily life, with jaw-dropping close-up selfies to random stills of her cats and scribbles.
Aren’t you convinced yet that this stunning beauty is more than meets the eye?
Fans are surely excited to see more of her soon!

Becoming Royals
the Khitan Princess
Woo-Hee was unlike any woman she’d ever met. She was an interesting mix of poise and physical strength. She said she wore what women wore in Khitan but, even as rich as her fabrics were, it still looked very much like she was ready to ride into battle unencumbered.
She was also technically Rachel’s cousin. Mother rarely talked about the sister sent as part of the tribute given to Khitan. Apparently, it is what caused the divide between the Choi and Lee households as it broke Grandfather Lee’s heart.
Rachel held the princess’ little boy and felt hungry for her own. She couldn’t stop smiling at the baby and she let him play with one of her less dangerous hair ornaments. She tried to concentrate on what Queen Kyung-Ran was saying but Rachel just wanted to hear more about how Woo-Hee ran into battle at the age of ten and shot an entire quiver of arrows into the enemy. Each one landed on their target--usually in the eyes.
Queen Kyung-Ran looked mildly nauseous but Rachel was eating it up.
“We have only a few real cities,” she said with a smile to Rachel. “My father leads the people but Song has been pressing on us and there is discord in Northern Liao. He did not have enough sons to control this tide. We will be scattered and eaten soon.”
“Why would you tell us such a vulnerable thing?” Queen Kyung-Ran poured Woo-Hee another cup of tea.
“My father wants to hide me in your court. He does not understand your marriage customs. My mother has tried to explain the necessity of my...I think the word she used was virginity. We don’t have a corresponding term. If my son did not need me to survive, my mother would’ve hidden him.”
Rachel blinked and felt surprise. “You do not have a wet nurse?”
“I refused. My body created enough to feed him. I am in good health and I am well fed. I wish I could do more for my people, but your Kim family has come to war against us at a vulnerable time. I met with Kim Won. Unfortunately, his distaste at my son was something I cannot bear. I do not need a marriage, your majesty. I need a safe home for my son to grow.” She smiled kindly at Rachel. “And I’ve seen the crown prince’s love for you. It is not to be trifled with.”
Rachel looked down at the beautiful little boy in her arms and wished that this wasn’t a perfect resolution to everything she hoped for. It felt too easy and she wondered how the King would make her pay for it as an idea came to her. “I am speaking with our grandfather today. I will see how he feels about bringing you and your son into his household. I see no reason why he would object. It is not a royal line but it is very close and he has no sons. A male heir of his bloodline should be welcome. Your child is technically a prince, no matter how your country falls apart, he is still a prince.”
“It is like watching Esther when she was young,” Queen Kyung-Ran commented when Woo-Hee agreed to her offer. “You are very much like your mother. I mean that as a highest compliment. We have needed Esther here.”
“Thank you, your majesty.” Her cheeks got a little hot at the praise. Then she got warm again when Young-Do arrived and kissed her cheek. “Look at this little prince,” she smiled up at him. “Isn’t he beautiful?”
Young-Do offered his finger and the baby boy gripped it tightly. “He is very strong. You must be pleased, Princess Woo-Hee.”
“I am.” She stood and bowed politely. Rachel decided not to bother. Her arms were full. “I am grateful for the hospitality of your palace, Crown Prince.”
“It is not my palace yet,” Young-Do said quietly and she caught him glancing at one of the court ladies. Rachel marked her in her mind to remember for later. “Long live the king.”
Rachel quietly murmured it after him. Woo-Hee’s eyebrows went up and Rachel decided to warn her later since no one dared to warn her enough. Young-Do was given a seat and Rachel enjoyed getting caught up in this little boy’s smiles. She was eager to have her own.
Soon. Soon. Soon. Three days and they could make their own little one. She hoped her little boy would be as strong as his father, as good as his father, and as sweet as he could possibly become. Rachel reluctantly released the baby to his mother when it was time for her to go visit her grandfather.
“Which temple will you visit?”
He smiled tightly and took her hand as they walked to the stables. “The minister of rites believes I should make an offering at all five of the major temples so as not to show favoritism to a particular priest. It will go late. I have no idea how long I will be gone. I spoke to Bo-Na and she will be happy to sleep with you tonight. She also reminded me that he is not magic.”
“Good. Do you know if Chan-Young has told her the truth?”
“I don’t know.” He looked frustrated. “She hasn’t said anything about him and that’s unusual for Bo-Na. He was all Bo-Na talked about for nearly a year. I’m worried about him. This isn’t like Bo-Na.”
“I will check with him tonight. I’ll do it under my big sister guise.” She squeezed his hand and enjoyed his smile.
“Thank you. And just so you know, I have every faith in you that Princess Rachel will outshine Lady Esther in every capacity. You smile when your mother is mentioned so I know it doesn’t bother you but...just because you do her credit doesn’t mean you aren’t amazing in your own right.”
His praise made her blush and she glanced around for one of the alcoves. She tugged him into it and pressed him up against the wall so she could kiss him. Young-Do immediately lifted her up so it was easier to meet him. She enjoyed twisting his hair around her fingers and wished she had less decorum so she could wrap her legs around his waist.
Eventually the kiss cooled down and he set her on her feet. He carefully smoothed out her hair and fixed some of her loose hair pieces. “I didn’t want you to make offerings for our marriage without remembering how excited I am. Three more days.”
“Two more nights,” he corrected and she grinned happily up at him. He walked her to the stables and she was delighted when he ordered their horses for them both. She fed Moonlight an apple while the hostler saddled him. Young-Do helped her up and kissed her hands before mounting his own horse.
They road together for part of the way before he realized she’d left without any servants or guards. So, instead of turning to go to the first temple on his list, Young-Do escorted her all the way to Grandfather Lee’s estate. Her grandfather met them himself and bowed politely to Young-Do.
“The rumors are true, then. Esther told me it was a love match, but I didn’t believe her. I know her opinion on love matches.” Grandfather Lee was a playful older man who delighted Rachel every time they were together. Her first correspondence as a little girl had been to him. He visited Mother at least once a year and always had something pretty for Rachel. He never complained about her learning to defend herself and sent her books just as often as he sent her the latest makeup.
She knew he didn’t like Yoo Tae-Hoon and thought he was the worst choice his daughter could’ve made. She also knew that he didn’t complain about Mother’s extramarital affairs.
He refused the Prime Minister position several times in the last six years. He claimed he was too old for politics but Rachel knew that couldn’t be true. Grandfather Lee was an old war hero, legendary for his prowess on the battle field. General Lee was granted the family name from Rachel’s Grandfather. He’d held every public office, was incredibly wealthy and popular with the merchants, and allowed his daughter to refuse the King’s marriage proposals--twice.
“I am very lucky,” Young-Do said after bowing deeply. “The love of a woman like Rachel is worth having.”
“I have hope in our country again, your majesty. Thank you for bringing my granddaughter here to visit me. Will you stay for tea?”
“I must decline. If I want to have an evening drink with Rachel, I must get through my duties at the temples today. I will send my bodyguard to pick her up. If I may send a message?”
“Of course.” He gestured to a servant and had her help Young-Do. Rachel wanted to kiss him goodbye but it wasn’t appropriate in front of her grandfather. Grandfather Lee brought her inside and she began talking about the Khitan princess when she stopped short.
Mother rose elegantly to her feet and opened her arms. Tears filled Rachel’s eyes. “Omma?”
“I cannot be at your wedding. The King has barred me from attending.” Rachel flung herself into her arms. She knew that Mother was a delicate subject inside the palace. But to see her here...now...”Don’t cry, my daughter. You have grown so much this last month. I’m so happy to see you.”

10 + 11 questions tag
Thank you @shenmeizhuang for tagging me!
A. Always post the rules. Answer the questions then write (10 or 11?) new ones.
B. Tag 11 people and link them to the post. Tell the person who tagged you that you’ve answered their questions.
My questions:
Favorite heroine.
Favorite drama trope.
Name a character that you initially liked but came to dislike.
Least favorite drama trope.
What dramas do you think should be 20 episodes shorter?
Favorite example of trope dissection/dispellation.
Favorite time travel drama.
What historical figure would you like to see a drama about?
What type of plot twist would you like to see more?
What is the worst plot twist you have seen in a drama?
Favorite villain or antagonist?
Hua Fei, from the Legend of Zhen Huan/后宫 甄嬛传.  For all of her bad traits -- callousness, selfishness, a tendency to want to murder her enemies -- you can’t help but to feel bad for her.  And at Yongzheng for treating her like he did.  And I think that’s what I truly loved about Zhen Huan -- even the antagonists were fleshed out and multi-dimensional.
A honorable mention would be Ulanara Yi Xiu/Huang Hou from Zhen Huan.
Favorite character trope/archetype?
Interestingly, when it comes to female characters, I am willing to give any character trope a try if the storyline is good.  That said, I notice I do gravitates more towards dramas where it’s “carefree young woman getting entangled in political drama and then internalizes too much.”  Aka Bu Bu Jing Xin, Glory of the Tang Dynasty, Imperial Doctress, to some extent Singing All Along.
As for guys, because I inevitably end up watching palace dramas/court dramas, I am a sucker for “I am a prince/emperor with all the duties in the world including polygamy but I only have one true love” type of character  (see above dramas).  I swear this post will not become my rambling on Glory of the Tang Dynasty, Part 3.
Least favorite character trope/archetype?
The Evil Secondary Girl(TM) in modern dramas.  I give the trope a little bit more leeways in palace dramas because backstabbing and all are I guess historically accurate (maybe? lol) but the evil second girl trope in modern drama makes my eye twitch.
The biggest example I can think of is Ha Jae Kyung from Boys Over Flowers.  I have many many issues with that drama (don’t get me started on what they did with Jun Pyo that even Lee Min Ho can’t save), but the drama never gave a reason for why she was the Evil Secondary Girl (TM).  Yes she’s betrothed to Jun Pyo, whichl from all indications was arranged by her parents.  The drama never gave an indication as to why she’s so attached to Jun Pyo, other than this supposed betrothal that was arranged by other people.
Least favorite drama trope
Love stories where the jerk of the main character (always the dude) remains a jerk to everyone else but the Main Love Interest(TM).
Blackmail stories, like Sealed with a Kiss.  It’s not as much romantic as just plain creepy.
Name a character that you initially disliked but came to love
Wei Zi Fu from The Virtuous Queen of Han.  It wasn’t even that I initially disliked her character -- I just found her character really boring and a little bit insufferable by how good she is as a human being.  But then by the end of the drama I was pretty much HURT ZI FU AND I CUT YOU, YES INCLUDING YOU LIU CHE.
Favorite multi-season drama?
I don’t really watch a lot of multi-season drama that’s not in English, to be honest? I guess if you count Glory as multi-season.
That said, I have high hopes for the 2nd season of Dr. Qin Medical Examiner.
Favorite example of trope dissection/dispellation.
Bu Bu Jing Xin.  It took the trope of “amazing heroine that everyone loves” and shred my heart to pieces.
Favorite time travel drama.
Bu Bu Jing Xin again.  I haven’t watched the Myth yet (honestly, I know that it ends up super angsty and I keep chickening out because of that), and while I enjoy Gong for the time traveling palace Boys Over Flower adaptation that Yu Zheng kept denying, Bu Bu Jing Xin is just so tightly and well written, well acted, beautiful, and dramatic but never over the top.
Choose a period drama, sageuk, or wuxia that you would like to time travel to
Most of the period drama and wuxia that I watch end up with 90% of the cast dying so I am not sure if I actually want to time travel to any of them.  At this point, probably Glory of the Tang Dynasty so I can talk some sense into Li Chu and Zhen Zhu during certain plot points.  And also because I feel like Li Chu occasionally needs a Get A Grip Friend.
Historical event/time period/historical figure(s) that you want to see a show explore.
I am not sure, really.  I would love to see an epic political drama of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period that wasn’t overwrought with romantic melodrama a la Qing Shi Huang Fei.
Name a show with the best (most intensive yet reasonable/plausible) plot twists.
Bu Bu Jing Xin.  I guess it was not a plot twist because I knew history and what happened between the fourth and eighth prince, but the deterioration of their relationship throughout the drama was actually made in a way that was super reasonable and plausible even though it broke my heart.
I’m tagging @cdramaddict, @dangermousie, @shenmeizhuang.  I realize that I don’t talk with my mutuals a lot, but anyone who wants to answer can :)

Becoming Royals
an unexpected visit (trigger warning for the King)
Ten more days and then she wouldn’t have to sneak into Young-Do’s rooms to take naps or talk to him late at night. The king had finally assigned him a new task so he wasn’t able to be at her beck and call at the school.
It made Rachel cranky. Making out was not doing it for her anymore. She wanted to find a truly secret place where they could touch each other. She almost swallowed her pride to ask Eun-Sang where Hyo-Shin was taking her but she knew Young-Do wouldn’t like it.
His paranoia regarding her virginity worried her but she didn’t push it. She didn’t understand why the King kept pushing Young-Do to...be her husband early. She didn’t like the word neglect. It meant something different to him so all she could do was kiss him in public and hope that was enough.
Ten days. She could handle ten more days.
The Khitan delegation arrived two days ago. Rachel sat with the queens pouring over military reports and the faint whisperings they had in the Khitan and Song courts. Queen Jae-Kyung used her family contacts to reveal to the King that Khitan was falling apart and not to make any hasty agreements but it turned around in her stomach and worried Rachel.
“Princess,” Yoo-Ra interrupted her thoughts. “The Magistrate is here.”
Rachel blinked and try to smile at her. “Thank you. Is Bo-Na still playing with the boys?”
“She is. I believe some of the girls are playing, too. I will get them cleaned up for lunch and afternoon classes. Ji-Sun should be here soon.”
Rachel nodded and then gently touched Yoo-Ra’s arm. “You’ve been a very good help to me these last few days. I will look for a way to return the favor.”
Yoo-Ra suddenly grasped her hand before she could pull away. “Will you put in a good word for me with Lee Hyo-Shin?”
It was not what Rachel expected. Perhaps honesty would be the best course. “He is in love with my maid. I am looking for a woman who can respect that relationship and not torture her until I make her his concubine. I know your father is pushing for it. Do you care for him?”
She swallowed and let go of Rachel’s hand. “He is a good man, princess. As long as he came to me and gave me a child, I would look past his love for your maid. I know Ji-Sun is the easier choice. She doesn’t like men. They could come to a better agreement about your maid. But he is kind and thoughtful and if he cannot love me, at least I would still have a kind husband.”
“There is no other man you want? I’m not talking about a nobleman. Any man?”
She sadly looked down at the ground and shook her head. “I have not allowed my reputation to be tarnished in such a way. I could not do that to my family.”
“I understand. I really do.” Rachel did not have time for this request but she did offer Yoo-Ra a hug. “A kind husband is not to be thrown away lightly. I will think on it, Lady Yoo-Ra.”
She bowed and her eyes were a little bit wet. “That is is all I can ask for, Princess.”
Yoo-Ra stepped away as the Magistrate came up to Rachel with his reports. She quickly flipped through them and felt relief. “The merchants aren’t pushing back?”
“I explained that I was willing to match taxes if they chose to rehabilitate child thieves instead of just turning them over to me. It is more expensive for them to incarcerate and have a trial than it is to give them to you with a small donation. I provided them with the information Song Ji-Sun put together with the tax codes.”
“My son never spoke of this when he asked for this gift.” Rachel hated being blindsided, especially by the king, but she turned and bowed to him as he gave an uncomfortable cough. The Magistrate went down on one knee and crossed his fist over his chest.
“Your majesty. I was not expecting you. Please give me a moment to arrange a seat and some tea. I am happy to update you on my project.” Her heart started pounding. Young-Do was not here to get in the way if the King was unhappy with her project. She waved over one of the nannies and quickly gave instructions.
Once the King was settled, Rachel poured him tea and offered it as best she could. This was not her strength but she wouldn’t put any woman lower than her in his sight. She wanted to believe he wouldn’t attack her out of hand. She just needed to be careful.
“This school has only been running for a week, yet I get multiple reports about it and your popularity, Princess Rachel.”
“Yes, your majesty. It gives me something to do while my prince is otherwise occupied serving you.” She kept her gaze lowered and tried to watch him from beneath her lashes.
“Is my son neglecting you?”
Rachel bit the inside of her cheek. She wished Young-Do explained what that meant. “He cares about my reputation before we are married, your majesty. He cares that no one questions my virtue so I maybe exemplary to the nation’s women as the crown princess. It creates a distance neither of us want. The school allows me to focus my ardor elsewhere until it is appropriate.”
It made the King laugh. “He is a foolish child and takes after his mother too much. Forgive him, Princess Rachel, for not taking the steps to make you his. You remind me of your mother every time we speak. You have so much of her loveliness. Alright, tell me about your school and how you are playing with the money necessary to run it.”
That, Rachel could do, without fear. She launched into an explanation of her process, her reasoning, and all the laws that allowed her to put together such a welfare project. She gave the King a tour and was glad Eun-Sang was working for Queen Jae-Kyung today. She was glad most of the servants and nannies were not beautiful enough to draw a King’s attention, even as she was acutely aware at how close the King enjoyed standing next to her.
Rachel walked him to the palanquin and bowed as his servants rushed to make it easy for him to step back into his chair. She was unprepared for the King to touch her. He tilted her chin up and Rachel froze at the look in his eyes. He ran his thumb over her lips and made her skin crawl.
“It is too bad I am not a young man anymore, Princess Rachel. You are squandered on my son. He definitely doesn’t know what to do with you. You are the kind of woman who will devour the throne if he does not rein you in. So I must do it for him.” She watched him lift his hand and she knew he was about to hit her. There were no witnesses except for his guards and personal servants.
He intended to remind her of her place.
Mother barely warned her that the palace could be like this. She warned her that physical aggression from powerful men was possible. Rachel thought she’d diminished herself enough not to be perceived as a threat.
Rachel stepped back and bowed more deeply so he missed and was spun off balance. She rose and straightened her back as the servants rushed to get him in the palanquin and save face.
The fact he did not try again meant that his anger was not random or uncontrolled. He beat his sons, his wives, giving into that rage on purpose. Rachel refused to make excuses for him. She would no longer let Young-Do make excuses for him. The revelation pissed her off. A cruel king was worse than a bad king.
“As long as my prince doesn’t neglect me, I will have no reason to devour him, your majesty. Thank you for your visit today. You do my school a great honor.” She had to ignore the way he glared at her. She knew there would be another attempt but she didn’t know how to protect herself from the King. If Young-Do were here today, he just would’ve gotten in the way.
Rachel walked back inside and greeted Ji-Sun. She thanked her for agreeing to give the children math lessons. She let no one know how shaken she was from the King’s impromptu visit and was shocked when Young-Do rode up to the school at a gallop. He literally flew from his horse and swallowed her in a tight hug.
“Are you hurt?”
“You are supposed to be preparing all of the important Rites for our wedding. What are you doing here?”
“Are you hurt?”
“The King wouldn’t dare to touch me in public. I’m too popular right now.” She lied but clutched at his cloak as she hugged him back. She felt safe like this and she didn’t know how to ask him to get between her and his father. Not at great personal risk to his own safety. “I’m not hurt.”
He didn’t believe her insistence. He pulled back and looked down at her. “You’re crying. What did he do to scare you?”
“I think he wants me as his...queen.” Young-Do hardened everywhere with fury.
“No. I won’t let him. I’ll sleep outside your rooms tonight--every night until the wedding. You...” He trailed off but she needed him to say it for her own peace of mind.
“I am your princess and no one else’s. I belong to you.” Rachel twisted her fingers in the front of his clothes and knew if Young-Do made this promise, she would be safe. It would guilt her forever if he got hurt, but she also knew if she got hurt and he didn’t try to stop it, it would hurt him even more.
“You are my princess,” he whispered. “I won’t let another man, including the king, touch you.”

Becoming Royals
the women of the court
Rachel was glad that Young-Do’s mood was high several days after the snowball fight. Progress was made on their school but Rachel still felt like something was missing. However, the most delightful news was learning Eun-Sang was assigned to Bo-Na on the days she wanted to be a girl.
It was easier to check in on her.
And Rachel kept looking for signs that Chan-Young had told Bo-Na who he was but there wasn’t any change in her mood so she didn’t know what to think.
“I think,” Eun-Sang suggested more gently than she ever had in the past. “You need to go to the ladies’ court today, instead of the school with Hyo-Shin and Prince Myung-Soo.”
Bo-Na made a face but nodded her agreement. “Song Ji-Sun is the daughter of the minister of finance. There are rumors that she checks all the books for her father and can do all sorts of maths in her head. Bo-Ah’s oldest brother is being considered for the minister of agriculture. And Yoo-Ra...” Bo-Na hesitated as she glanced at Eun-Sang.
“Yoo-Ra will most likely be the first wife of Lee Hyo-Shin because of her family’s ties to the ministry of justice and the wealthiest merchants in the capital,” Eun-Sang offered sweetly. “Queen Jae-Kyung involves all of the women at court in her charity projects. She has suggested you attempt to do the same once you are comfortable with them. After your game with the crown prince, the women are curious about you. Rachel, you need to spend more time with them.”
“I’m not good with...small talk.” It made her flush to watch Bo-Na and Eun-Sang exchange a look while Eun-Sang finished with Bo-Na’s hair. “I...”
“Girls scare you,” Eun-Sang teased. “You have no problem with boys but girls scare you.”
“Girls are scary,” Rachel tried not to pout. “I am a girl. I should know.”
“They scare me too,” Bo-Na said and patted her hand. “Especially, these girls. Hyun-Jin thinks Yoo-Ra is the most beautiful girl he’s ever seen. She scares the shit out of him whenever she talks or walks past the officers practicing inside the palace. The other girl that scares him is Ye-Sol but he’s not stupid enough to mess with a prince’s gisaeng.” She caught the look on Rachel’s face but shook her head. “Myung-Soo plays favorites at the pavilion. I don’t think the gisaeng are scary. They are sweet to everyone, even girls that are sometimes boys.”
“I want that story some time.” Rachel had to admit they were right. It was just so easy with Bo-Na and she wondered if it was because Bo-Na was sometimes a boy. “Alright. Eun-Sang, if you could let Hyo-Shin know I won’t be there today. He can tell Prince Myung-Soo.”
“Rachel, the prince--”
“Until proven otherwise. He made the threat. I’m taking him seriously. If it was a test, he should’ve picked something else.” She caught Eun-Sang rolling her eyes but she didn’t argue with Rachel. She tried to ignore the way her palms started sweating as she and Bo-Na went to join the informal women’s court in Queen Kyung-Ran’s part of the palace.
Everyone was welcoming and encouraged her into their circle. Rachel envied Bo-Na’s bright enthusiasm. She just settled herself in and managed to get a conversation going. Although, Rachel still didn’t like the way Bo-Ah and Yoo-Ra looked at Bo-Na.
Rachel did this for three straight days. She didn’t talk much and just listened. She had to admit, Yoo-Ra and Bo-Ah weren’t...bad...when they weren’t looking at Bo-Na askance. But it was Bo-Ah that finally broached the curiosity of her relationship with Young-Do towards the end of afternoon tea when a message arrived from him.
Rachel opened it and couldn’t stop her smile. She liked Young-Do’s straightforward prose. Hyo-Shin’s poetry might have been more lyrical but Young-Do asking to meet her in the stables for an afternoon ride made her blush.
“Princess...” Bo-Ah worried her lip between her teeth. “We’ve heard that you are a love match to our prince...We would like to hear the story about how it happened...We’ve never...seen him so playful before.”
Rachel caught Queen Kyung-Ran smiling into her tea as Rachel quickly penned Young-Do a response as she tried to gather her thoughts. Bo-Na also giggled into her cup. Rachel couldn’t talk about the cave or the attack by the Kim family or even moonlight conversations.
“He didn’t make his attempt to woo me about him.” All at once, she had eager ears for her love story. “My school and housing for orphans is very important to me. The day he arrived, I was investigating dangerous rumors, about a butcher in my city. He...” Rachel smiled to herself. “He took my project seriously. I...” she bit her lip. “It was different than other men’s attempts. The man who arrived before him, did not listen. My prince did. I am unsure what I did to draw in my prince during that time but...he drew me in by taking me seriously.”
There were nods and murmurs among the girls and Rachel felt a sort of relief. She was like other girls and it suddenly felt important to relate to these women if she was meant to be their queen. Eun-Sang was right to make her be here. Bo-Na grinned cheekily as Queen Kyung-Ran actually teased her. “Stabbing the younger Kim son definitely helped. Everyone knows my son admires intelligence and strength.”
Another set of murmurs and wide eyes. “Stabbing?” Ji-Sun perked up. “So the rumors are true? You killed Kim Tan? The official report said it was your mother.”
“Lady Esther loves Princess Rachel very much,” Queen Kyung-Ran cut in delicately. “The official story matters for political reasons. Princess Rachel grew up on the border during our war. Even fine ladies need to be able to protect their lands when the men are gone.”
“I told you,” Bo-Na said bluntly. “I could teach you tricks if you’d let me. Women are not weaker than men. We just don’t always get a chance to practice. I’m a good teacher. I taught Princess Rachel how to throw the Crown Prince.”
There were some giggles. Several of the ladies had seen Rachel do it, followed by Young-Do rolling on top of her and kissing her...fervently.
“We could do it at my school site,” Rachel finally found her in. “My prince has found a way to gift me this project to keep my attention occupied before we marry. It has a roof and a covered courtyard now. I’m still learning the landscape of the city politics. I would appreciate and welcome any help from the ladies of the court.”
She held her breath and tried not to watch Yoo-Ra and Bo-Ah too closely. They were the leaders of the noblewomen. Rachel still had far to go to win over all the women. Being crown princess was not enough to establish her authority. Not yet.
“I would like to look at your accounting and budget,” Ji-Sun said. “And it would be fun to see a demonstration on how you saved your province from an invasion.”
“If the queen allows it, we could go during afternoon tea tomorrow.” Rachel’s stomach twisted as she hoped Queen Kyung-Ran would back her up. This was her court, not Rachel’s.
“Jae-Kyung has said good things about your school. I know Prince Myung-Soo is working hard to impress you and his brother. I will speak with Go Nam-Il about securing our safety. This is a lovely idea, Princess Rachel. I hope to see all of my beautiful ladies at the stables tomorrow.” Queen Kyung-Ran smiled at them just as Young-Do was announced. She laughed softly and allowed him to come in. He bowed to his mother. “What would you do if I told you that you couldn’t take your princess away because I want to keep her? You are too impatient today.”
Young-Do actually gaped at his mother and flushed at the laughter surrounding him. He looked at Rachel and she didn’t know if she should help him or let him flounder a bit more.
“You’ve had her for three days now. We have limited time today, Omeoni. I have Moonlight all prepped and ready for her. And--”
“You’re bored?” She raised her eyebrows.
“I don’t have an assignment from the king. I cannot neglect my princess.” He sounded very desperate for a moment and Rachel decided to take pity on him and further their love story. She stood and bowed deeply to the queen before going over and taking Young-Do’s hand.
“Your majesty, I request to be able to take your leave. My prince and I haven’t seen each other since breakfast. This has been a lovely diversion and I am excited for our outing tomorrow. Please, allow us to go riding before the sun sets.” She held her bow until the queen relented with a chuckle and wave of her hand. Young-Do started to pull her away when she made him leave the door open, just a crack, before she encouraged him down to kiss her.
Rachel smirked when there was a collective sigh from inside the queen’s receiving room. Young-Do tilted his head and then grinned right before he half lifted her up and properly kissed her.

Becoming Royals
a playful moment
Rachel was so beautiful and poised as she walked into the throne room and bowed to the king and court. Young-Do stood off to the side of the throne and felt the warmth of triumph when all the ministers and important nobles agreed to the date Chang-Soo suggested.
There was not one voice of dissent. Rachel stood there, quietly, listening to the murmurs and the praise both queens gave before the King welcomed her into the royal family.
Father even said she was a bright hope shining through their years of war. Then she was dismissed. Rachel elegantly backed out of the throne room and the doors closed. The king dismissed the queens and nobles before opening up for the daily business.
Young-Do wished he’d been dismissed, too. Especially, when the compliments started from the labor minister.
“The bridge will be completed during the spring. Last night the crew worked hard to get the foundation in place so after the thaw it can be completed quickly. I took the crown prince’s suggestion that a makeshift ferry be set up until the river freezes.”
Father’s gaze slid over to him and Young-Do kept his eyes on the ground. “I heard you were with your princess last night. I did not know you left the palace.”
“My princess and I had dinner and spent some time together,” Young-Do said quietly. “But I left close to midnight with Myung-Soo to do a surprise inspection of the bridge. We found the crew working hard and late not to disappoint the king.”
Father didn’t respond right away and Young-Do didn’t dare look at him to try and figure how to avoid whatever might upset him about this success. Young-Do felt the ministers holding their breath. He was not the only one who learned to be wary of the king’s silence.
“She is almost as good as your wife,” Father finally said. “Do not neglect her.”
“Of course not, my king.” Young-Do bowed and tried not to clench his fists. He decided, long before he even met Rachel, that he would wait and wait and wait until he was married to be with whomever Father chose to make his wife. He would not do what father did--encourage the woman that since she was practically his, nothing could possibly go wrong if he...consummated their relationship early.
Young-Do did not trust Father to hold to that. If he and Rachel stayed up late talking, he would make sure everyone saw him leave her rooms. He promised her, just yesterday, that no one would question her honor. She might have meant after they were married but he meant always.
It took nearly another two hours before business was finished and the court was dismissed. Father did not appear angry about the bridge. He ordered Young-Do to return after lunch to discuss the next project. He intended to ask Father to let him work on Rachel’s school and hoped he didn’t have to beg.
He stepped outside and was surprised that Rachel waited for him. She wore a warm cloak and had changed into riding clothes. The snow was still falling hard and her cheeks were pink as she handed him his gloves and a maid put on his cloak. “What’s this?”
“It’s cold and snowing. I don’t want you to get sick. Drink this.” She handed him a warm drink and was surprised it was slightly alcoholic. Once he was finished and properly outfitted for what she wanted, Rachel took his hand and they started walking towards the large courtyard outside his part of the palace.
They turned the corner, Rachel let go of his hand, and Young-Do got smacked in the face with a snowball.
He sputtered and once he got the snow out of his eyes, he looked around and found Rachel gone and the courtyard filled with snow embankments about his size when he crouched down. Two more snowballs hit him and he dove for the first one.
“You will have to do better than that, Princeling!” Bo-Na’s voice echoed throughout the yard and he saw that he’d created a snow tower in the solid oak tree. Rachel peeked over the top of the wall and waved with a cheeky grin. He was confused until Bo-Na continued. “I have your princess! You must defeat me and my army to get her back!”
Army?
To answer his silent question, he barely dodged the next two snowballs. He caught sight of Myung-Soo and Hyo-Shin before they ducked behind their embankments. Then, he was hit from behind and he whirled around to find both queens sitting on the edge of the veranda. Mother threw a second snowball and hit him in the chest.
“Omma!”
She laughed and he had to admit it was nice to see her sitting there, relaxed and playful, kicking her feet and drinking tea with a pile of snowballs within reach. Jae-Kyung had some too. He turned to Bo-Na, “Three hit rule?”
“You’ve been hit more than three times,” she pointed out. “But, I’ll allow it. Hurry, or I will take the lovely Princess Rachel for myself!”
Young-Do wasn’t going to attack the queens, so he darted to the other side of the first row of embankments, quickly packed a snowball and hit Myung-Soo in the face. Years on the battlefield taught him that two more would come from behind so he grabbed his brother and twisted him around just as the next two impacted on his back.
“Fuck,” Myung-Soo grumbled. “I forget how fast you are. Bo-Na has Rachel trapped. Good luck.”
“Did you help set this up?”
To his surprise, Myung-Soo looked sheepish. “The princess thought it would be fun for you. Look out!”
Young-Do got hit twice by Hyo-Shin and once by Queen Jae-Kyung just as Rachel called out. “Please save me, my prince!”
Myung-Soo laughed when Rachel’s cry for help stirred something in his blood and Young-Do decided to bypass Hyo-Shin, get out of the throwing range of the queens, and go straight for Bo-Na. She was the real competition here anyway. He scooped up snow and threw it. Bo-Na dodged and Hyo-Shin tackled him to the ground.
Young-Do rolled with him and got on top of his friend. He clamped his thighs tightly to Hyo-Shin’s hips and slammed the snowball in his hand against his chest. He wasted no time getting the next two in his face.
“I told Bo-Na we needed more people.” Hyo-Shin arched his hips up hard and knocked Young-Do off of him. “Be careful, Rachel is trapped.”
There was something in the way he said it that almost gave Young-Do pause. If Rachel was trapped, he had to get to her, even faster. He stared at the snow tower Bo-Na had taken position in and narrowed his eyes. Bo-Na had plenty of snowballs and the best aim out of all of them. Rachel was visible at the base of the tree and anger burned inside him when he realized Bo-Na tied her hands together.
This was supposed to be a game! Why go that far?
“Come down and fight me,” Young-Do said. “Or I’ll shake you out of that tree.”
“Are you sure? You’re tired and out of breath. I best you, two out of three times.”
“You have my princess. I want her back.” It was always interesting to watch Bo-Na slip into his warrior self. Her shoulders would relax and her eyes harden. He reached behind his back and pulled out a wooden practice sword and tossed it down to Young-Do. She lightly jumped out of the tree and landed like a cat on her feet.
“To the kill, Prince. Remember, I have her trapped.” Young-Do caught the first two strikes and wished he wasn’t in his court clothing. It was probably ruined after all the snow and exertion but he didn’t care. He hadn’t enjoyed himself like this since...a very long time ago.
So he ripped the side of his clothes so he could attack Bo-Na better. Bo-Na was right. He was wet and tired but Rachel’s hands were tied and he couldn’t let her down. Young-Do twisted and darted until he disarmed Bo-Na and put his wooden sword against his throat.
“Yield.”
Bo-Na stood there and considered him. “Alright. I yield.”
It was too easy, but Young-Do didn’t care. He dropped his sword and ran over to Rachel. He took her hands and quickly untied her. Young-Do tried to keep his irritation to himself but she put her hand firmly on the back of his neck and stepped in close.
He thought she intended to kiss him, so he bent down, but at the last second, Rachel stepped her right foot past him, pressed her hip tightly against his right thigh, pinned his right arm under her left, pressed her right cheek against his right shoulder--and threw him to the ground. It was a perfect throw.
Her follow through was a little sloppy as she scrambled on top of him and, like she had done to Yoon Chan-Young, she whipped out her binyeo and pressed it against his throat. She clenched her thighs tightly to his hips and he had never been so turned on in his life.
Rachel was the trap.
“Surrender to me, my prince.”
“Only to you.” He didn’t care who heard him say something so ridiculous. Her eyes were bright, her cheeks flushed, and her lips...Rachel replaced her hairpin and sealed his promise with a kiss.
Now that he didn’t have to worry about an accidental nicking, Young-Do wrapped his arms around her waist and rolled her over. He just wanted to kiss her for as long as he could. Young-Do heard some cheering and whistles (mostly from Bo-Na) but since Rachel just giggled, he continued to kiss her.
“Did you have fun?” she asked after he brought them back to their feet.
“Yes. This was a fantastic surprise. Thank you.”
“You were amazing to watch. I’ve seen you practice but...”
“You’ve seen me lose.” He wrinkled his nose. “Both Hyo-Shin and Bo-Na are better warriors than I am. Especially, in one on one combat. I do better with multiple opponents.”
“That’s what Bo-Na said.” Rachel ducked under his arm and pressed herself against his side. He started to fret when she obviously shivered. “I wanted to give you a few allies, but she said it would be over too quickly. I’m glad I took his advice. Watching you was breathtaking. I didn’t think I would be able to throw you.”
“Never underestimate the element of surprise,” Hyo-Shin cut in with hot drinks. “Rachel learns quickly. You should teach her more.” He must’ve had something of a jealous look on his face because Hyo-Shin rolled his eyes. “You are the only one who gets turned on like that. The rest of us are too afraid of getting something important damaged.”
Rachel snickered into her cup. She smiled and took a deep breath. “Were you able to make it happen?”
“What happen?” Young-Do looked between them and wished they didn’t have such an easy shorthand. He knew it was irrational to be jealous. After all, he and Bo-Na had the same kind of shorthand.
“The Khitan ambassador arrived this morning. I wanted him to watch you rescue me. It is time to get our love story out there. I asked Hyo-Shin to make a few key people run into this game.”
The familiar fear burst through him before he stamped it down. Rachel knew what she was doing. Father only had two years left. He wouldn’t dare make an enemy of the Yoo or Lee clans by hurting her. He knew she was having dinner with her maternal grandfather tonight. She would meet with her paternal uncle tomorrow. She’d briefly mentioned that she’d kept up correspondence with both sides of her family from a very young age. Her mother insisted on it even though her father didn’t see all the fuss because she was a girl.
Young-Do could take any punishment Father gave him. Rachel would be safe. He would keep her safe.
“Did they?”
Hyo-Shin nodded and Rachel took Young-Do’s hand and kissed it. “Trust me, my prince.”
He did.
