Coimbra, Green Park of Mondego - West Entrance, PROAP, 2006

The project takes on two main objectives intended for this intervention: to protect the surrounding area of the Santa Clara-a-Velha convent from flooding with the construction of an embankment: and to create an urban park that guides people from the left bank of the city to the Parque Verde do Mondego. The simplicity of the proposed design arises from the creation of a stone platform which marks the entrance to the park and leads to a main walkway with a system of multi-level paths that allow views of the Convent. These pathways promote varying viewpoints and perspectives of the city while framing grass surfaces occasionally punctuated by masses of shrubs to minimise overuse.

The project ‘Brooklyn Bridge Park’ in New York by Michael Van Valkenburgh wins the Rosa Barba International Landscape Prize 2021

The project Brooklyn Bridge Park in New York designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh has been proclaimed this afternoon winner of the Rosa Barba 2021 International Landscape Prize, which is awarded within the symposium of the 11th International Biennial of Landscape Architecture Biennial, Barcelona, which took place from September 27th to October 2nd.

Designed and built over the past 20 years, Brooklyn Bridge Park spans 85 acres along 1.3 miles of the East River waterfront. The project has transformed the hardened industrial site of abandoned warehouses, obsolete piers, and decaying bulkheads into a vibrant public space. Today, park elements improve public access, reanimate six piers, and restore ecological diversity, blurring the edge between the East River and the park and proposing a new model for transforming civic urban waterfronts.

The Rosa Barba International Landscape Prize consists of an economic reward of 15,000 € and it is awarded to a landscaping project built during the 5 years prior to the symposium date.

The 11th International Biennial of Landscape Architecture of Barcelona will be held online and will discuss solutions to address climate change mitigation with professionals and activists of landscape and architecture

• The event, which will take place from the 27th of September to the 2nd of October, will be exceptionally held virtually, with free registration.

• It will include: A symposium, the Rosa Barba International Landscape Award, and the International Landscape Schools Award – Banco Sabadell Foundation.

• The motto of the symposium “Climate change, again: City and Nature”, highlights the use of landscape as a tool to face the climate emergency.

• Among the 42 experts who will attend the Biennial there are the American landscaper and climate activist Martha Schwartz, the French writer and gardener Gilles Clément, and the architect author of Brooklyn Bridge Park in New York, Michael Van Valkenburgh.

11th International Biennial of Landscape Architecture of Barcelona

Barcelona, September 16, 2021.- From the 27th of September to the 2nd of October, 2021 a new edition of the International Biennial of Landscape Architecture of Barcelona will take place, which will host the symposium “Climate change, again: City and Nature” to reflect on the importance of landscape in reducing climate change, as well as the Rosa Barba International Landscape Award and the International Landscape Schools Award – Banco Sabadell Foundation.

The event will, let another year, bring together professionals and experts in landscaping and architecture in a congress that has become a reference on an international scale. The symposium will count with 8 renowned guests who will explain tools to face the climate emergency, the authors of the 11 finalist landscape projects of the prestigious Rosa Barba International Landscape Award and, last but not least, representatives of the 8 finalist schools of the Award. During the Biennial, the Book-catalogue of the 10th International Landscape Biennial held in 2018 will also be presented. The UPC School of Architecture (ETSAB) will host the exhibition of the finalists of both awards.

Given the context of the pandemic caused by Covid19, this edition of the Biennial will be held online, with the exception of the closing ceremony, which will take place at the COAC and the Palau de la Música (Barcelona, Spain).

The 11th International Biennial of Landscape Architecture of Barcelona is organized by the Association of Architects of Catalonia and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, and has the institutional support of the Barcelona Metropolitan Area, the Barcelona City Council, the Barcelona Provincial Council, the collaboration of Banco Sabadell Foundation, and the collaboration of the ISUF Congress, the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA), the International Federation of Landscape Architects of Europe (IFLA Europe) and the New European Bauhaus.

The Symposium: a showcase of the best landscape projects and the presence of experts from the sector

One more year, the Biennial invites us to address a current issue as a contribution to the public debate to solve society’s problems from the perspective of the landscape. This year the motto of the Biennial symposium is “Climate change, again: City and Nature”. The finalists of the two prizes awarded by the Biennial also participate in the Symposium: Rosa Barba (professionals) and Schools (architecture universities). In total, 43 speakers are expected to participate for 30 hours online.

The 8 invited experts of the Symposium are:

§ Martha Schwartz. Landscape architect, urban planner, climate activist and professor at Harvard University Graduate School of Design.

§ Colleen Mercer Clarke. Landscape architect and coastal ecologist.

§ Karin Helms. Landscaper, biologist and professor at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design. She incorporates participation to perform in great cultural landscapes. President of IFLA Europe.

§ Maguelonne Déjeant-Pons. Executive Secretary of the European Landscape Convention of the Council of Europe.

§ Li Xiong. Professor and Vice President of Beijing Forestry University and member of the China Expert Committee on Landscape Architecture.

§ Gilles Clément. Horticultural engineer, landscape architect, writer, gardener and professor at the National Superior School of the Country of Versailles.

As local institutional representatives, the symposium will feature:

§ Xavier Matilla. Chief Architect of the Barcelona City Council.

§ Ramon Torra. Architect and manager of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona.

Claudio Parentela (Italia): "Noi, calabrezii, semănăm bine cu românii, avem caractere şi limbi asemănătoare, şi suntem demni"

Claudio Parentela a pictat cel mai mult dintre toţi artiştii popo¬siţi la Co¬nac. A lucrat dezlănţuit şi cu poftă, în¬conjurat de o lume româ¬neas-că şi de un peisaj ce-i par, cumva, foarte a¬proape.

- De unde sunteţi, d-le Clau¬dio Parentela?

- Trăiesc în Italia, în sudul ei. Re¬giunea mea se numeşte Cala¬bria. Locuiesc în Catanzaro, un oră¬şel care e nu departe de Cro¬tona, cetatea lui Pitagora.

- Când v-aţi descoperit vocaţia de artist? Şi cum?

- Eu pictez de când eram copil. Însă am devenit artist profesionist în anii '90. Am început cu benzile desenate. Am publicat o grămadă prin ţările din fosta Iugoslavie, în special în Slovenia. În 1996, am fost sin¬gurul ita¬lian invitat la Fes¬ti¬valul ti¬ne¬rilor artişti de la Ljubli¬jana. Apoi, în pri¬mii 14 ani, am lucrat mai ales în alb-negru. Cred că ne¬grul obţinut cu tuş chi¬ne¬zesc este cel mai frumos din lume. Iar nuan¬ţele din¬tre alb şi negru sunt ase¬meni mii¬lor de nuan¬ţe ale su¬fle¬tului. După aceşti 14 ani de alb şi negru, am trecut, nu ştiu cum, la culoare. Folosesc toate materialele şi tehnicile. Lucrez mult şi în lumea modei. Am făcut tot felul de cover-uri pentru reviste de modă. Îmi place moda ex¬tre¬me¬lor. Cele mai mul¬¬te piese de modă le vând în celebra Galerie Saatchi, din Lon¬¬dra.

- Dar picturile unde le vin¬deţi?

- În Statele U¬ni¬te. Aco¬lo există o anume liber¬tate în artă, care în Europa de Vest lip¬seşte. La ei se ex¬pe¬ri¬men¬tează mult, cu tot ce se poate.

- Cum aţi ajuns în Ro¬mâ¬¬nia?

- Am avut no¬ro¬cul să îl cu¬nosc pe acest mare artist ro¬mân care este Chris¬tian Pa¬ras¬chiv. Un amic comun, un ar¬tist fran¬cez, care a fost şi el la co¬nac, mi-a tot spus că trebuie să cu¬nosc un mare ar¬tist român.

- Şi cum a fost în¬tâl¬nirea cu Christian Pa¬ras¬chiv?

- Aşteptam acest moment de mult timp. A fost o în¬tâlnire şi o prietenie foarte frumoasă. Sunt norocos şi mândru că sunt prieten cu el. Datorită lui am putut fi oas¬pete în acest loc frumos, la Conacul Oteteleşeanu. Sunt fericit că am venit aici, nu atât pentru pictură sau pentru ospitalitate, ci pentru faptul că, în sfârşit, am reuşit să îl cunosc pe Pa¬ras¬chiv. Care a fost exact aşa cum mă aşteptam. Îmi place caracterul său. În Italia nu avem acest tip caracter. La noi există un caracter mai "soft". Aici, la dvs., oamenii sunt mai fermi, mai duri. Eu unul am adoptat acest tip de carac¬ter nu doar în viaţă, ci şi în artă. Şi pictez, pictez, pictez. Nu mă pot opri. Nu ştiu să fac altceva.

- Aţi lu¬crat mult aici. V-au inspirat co¬na¬cul, liniştea?

- Foarte mult. Mi-au plă¬cut îm¬pre¬ju¬rimile şi mai ales conacul. Am ales să pic¬tez multe ta¬blo¬uri într-o căbă¬nuţă de lângă co¬nac. Pen¬tru că eu sunt un solitar şi acolo e lo¬cul perfect pentru a picta. Apoi, în conac, am avut toa¬te ma¬terialele ca¬re mi-au tre¬buit: cer¬ne¬luri, culori, ab¬so¬lut tot. Totul a fost per¬fect. Oame¬nii sunt cumsecade şi mân¬carea bună. Cele opt tablouri le-am făcut cu mare plăcere, de¬şi nu tre¬buia să fac decât trei.

- Vă veţi mai întoarce în România?

- Sper că da. Voiam să vin de acum câţiva ani, dar nu a fost posibil. Mai întâi, pentru că noi, cala¬brezii semănăm bine cu românii. Poate de aceea, în Calabria, mulţi români şi românce se căsătoresc cu localnicii. Pentru că noi şi românii avem caractere şi limbi asemănătoare. Şi sutem demni. Ca şi noi, ro¬mânii sunt rezervaţi, înainte de a cunoaşte o per¬soa¬nă. Ne trebuie mai mult timp. Demnitatea ră¬mâne chiar şi atunci când suntem săraci. Apoi, eu sunt foarte atras de cultura şi arta românească. Ro¬mâ¬nia este o ţară străveche, cu un pământ magic. Iar mie îmi place să studiez magia. Şi sunt foarte interesat şi de reli¬gia şi de obiceiurile din România. La fel ca ţara mea, România e sălbatică, plină de fructe şi de bu¬nătăţi. În Calabria, de unde vin eu, pei¬¬sajul este ex¬traordinar. Marea este aproape de mun¬te. Un tărâm plin de contraste.

- Şi cum a fost în¬tâl¬nirea cu Christian Pa¬ras¬chiv?

- Aţi lu¬crat mult aici. V-au inspirat co¬na¬cul, liniştea?

- Vă veţi mai întoarce în România?
