how christmas makes me feel
Growing up, I’ve known Christmas to be full of traditions—the nine-day dawn masses, the night caroling, hectic family gatherings, the noche buena. It’s heavily recognized in the country because it’s closely tied to the Filipinos’ religion, Roman Catholic. But for me, Christmas is not about the traditions. It’s not about the presents we give or get either. It’s about being thankful.
Christmas is special for me, because it’s when I ponder over the things about myself I’ve chosen to neglect the rest of the year. It makes me forgive myself for all the times I’ve turned my back on my family, for going against my beliefs, for hurting others. I put a lot of pressure on myself most of the time, especially when I fail, and Christmas helps me heal. It’s the time of the year when I allow myself to breathe and celebrate with the people I love. The season reminds me that I am blessed with a strong support system that will never not have my back. That I am blessed with a circle of friends who have become more than family to me. That I am blessed with this wonderful life which offers me so many chances to change the world and be an impact to everyone around me. Every year, Christmas may be the same—full of rote, full of that familiar festive feeling—but to me it’s always a reassessment of the person I’ve matured into.
Here is a list I’ve written down on Christmas Eve of everything I am grateful for.
- I appreciate my mother, who works more than she lives. She is always strong and her heart is never tainted. On December 23rd she gave a young boy in tears a teddy bear without expecting anything in return.
- I appreciate my best friend for holding my hand throughout the storm that is my life. I will never regret the countless hours we’ve spent on the phone talking.
- I appreciate Ger for never giving up his place in my life (even though it’s been hard to keep up with me lately) and for supporting my passion for writing hehe I got you, Keiji.
- I appreciate my grandparents for staying grounded throughout the constant changes they’ve been swept into and, in turn, for keeping me grounded, too.
- I appreciate Ate Ging for putting her work before herself and for being there for me and my family when nobody else could.
- I appreciate Philip for being the older brother figure I’ve always relied upon all my life. I am glad that you are happy now and that you have made dreams you want to fulfill for yourself and your family.
- I appreciate my dad for being the support beams in our lives in his own unique way.
- I appreciate my brother for teaching me that there’s no shame in embracing failure and that it’s important to restart at your own pace.
- I appreciate Ate Bebe for putting all her care and dedication into everything she makes for us and for being patient with me whenever I experiment in the kitchen hehe
- I appreciate Ate Epin for having an unmatched tenderness, a resilience that has crossed violent seas, and a love that knows no large sacrifice.
- I appreciate Basing for being so pure and dedicated.
- I appreciate Part Jo and Part Mario for looking out for me and for being nice to my friends.
- I appreciate Kuya Edgar for accepting us as his family.
- I appreciate Pong and Kinse for helping me get through my days, especially the hardest ones, with their unwavering energy.
- I appreciate Kang for fighting the good fight until the very end. The truest miracle we’ve been given was the time spent with you, though short. Wherever you are now, I know you are well. Rest up, baby.
- I appreciate Oliver for being the bounciest Lab I know. You are so full of optimism I want to protect you from the rest of the world.
- I appreciate Jack for being tenacious and smart and for knowing you are more than what you are. You deserve more, bud.
- I appreciate Buday for being soft and gentle and unassuming. I hope you will finally become a mother.
- I appreciate Simo for serving us well and for being the wisest out of the troops.
- I appreciate the newest additions to the family, two pocket-sized pups I know will grow into fine dogs. They remind me that youth is an integral part of life and should not be lost so early on.
- I appreciate Ralph for selflessly committing himself to his volunteer work, though I may not show it all the time.
- I appreciate Jayne for being so kind and pure and soft-spoken, for being the sister I’ve always wanted.
- I appreciate Gwynne for being so spirited and true to herself. I love how you show your heart to the people you trust the most.
- I appreciate Dalagan for being the rock that anchored me and the girls home. I appreciate the sacrifices you’ve made for me—especially the mice hehe. My MVP.
- I appreciate Diane for being pragmatic, for being headstrong and fierce, for being self-reliant. You help me realize the things I tend to overlook. Thank you for being my head sometimes.
- I appreciate Ira for having the same mind as me. That doesn’t mean you are meek and shy, too. You are the sun we revolve around. You are the gravity that pulls.
- I appreciate Pam for her quirkiness, her creativity, her love for doodling flowers on the margins of her notebooks. I appreciate you for your awareness of other people’s feelings. Be strong–we’re here.
- I appreciate Bolen for always, always being the voice of reason. I love that you are the most level-headed person in the room.
- I appreciate Hya for being herself—bright, honest, and brave. I love that you try your best to put a smile on our faces.
- I appreciate Sheldon for being unafraid of the future, hurtling herself forward with her eyes closed. You are my ball of sunshine and sassiness.
- I appreciate Marilla for being a good listener, for looking out for us, and for never doubting our love for her.
- I appreciate Arwin for his care and compassion and the ambitions he nurtures.
- I appreciate Mante for waiting up with me after school and for being the loudest laugh in the room.
- I appreciate Tej for being my forever friend. You never left.
- I appreciate Sie for being cooler than he makes himself out to be haha. You’ll always be my Kuroo.
I know this is less about Christmas and more about myself and my life, but whenever it’s the holidays, it always feels like putting a pause on our lives to look into ourselves and pull out all the best parts we love. I’ve been told by so many people that there is never a right or wrong way to do something, so I’m celebrating Christmas my own way—counting my blessings.
