Since Russian President Vladimir Putin launched his all-out war on Ukraine almost a year ago, the Kremlin’s long-term plans for imperial expansion have come under closer scrutiny, particularly its use of ‘alternative measures’ to undermine the EU through propaganda and the funding of right-wing Eurosceptic parties in France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. But what about the UK?

Though dismissed or ignored at the time, Parliament’s Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) Committee’s 2018 report on disinformation and fake news outlined the impact of the Russian Embassy in London, and state-backed media outlets RT and Sputnik, in supporting the Leave campaigns.

It also revealed the role social media operations such as the Internet Research Agency and the now defunct Cambridge Analytica had in promoting Brexit. A year later, in 2019, Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee concluded in its ‘Russia Report’ that Kremlin interference in elections was the “new normal” and there were “credible attempts” to meddle with the UK’s democratic processes.

For whatever reason, Boris Johnson succeeded in delaying the publication of the Russia Report in the run-up to the 2019 General Election. When – against Johnson’s wishes – it was finally published in July 2020, the report also contained the staggering admission that there had been no official investigation into the potential damage done to our democracy by what was, by then, clearly a hostile foreign power.

Johnson’s apathy over our democratic national security was not new. While Foreign Secretary in 2017, Johnson claimed there was “not a sausage” of evidence of Putin meddling in Brexit, despite his nominal role overseeing GCHQ at the time, which had been working with the FBI’s Special Counsel Robert Mueller on precisely that. Mueller had named Maltese professor Joseph Mifsud as a Russian agent in London. As the Observer and Byline reported, Mifsud met Johnson to talk about Brexit.'

'Evgeny Lebedev was controversially elevated to the House of Lords by Johnson in 2020 – as Baron of Hampton in Richmond upon Thames and Siberia in the Russian Federation. His father, Alexander, a former senior KGB officer, is alleged to have been present when, as Foreign Secretary, Johnson left his security detail behind to travel to the Lebedev’s Umbrian villa following a NATO briefing on the attempted murder of defector Sergei Skripal by Russian military intelligence using the Novichok nerve agent in Salisbury. Johnson denies any official matters were discussed, but Paul Caruana Galizia has reported for Tortoise that Johnson was offered a back-channel to the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergei Lavrov.

'With all this evidence of the Kremlin’s close interest in British affairs, not least of all Putin’s public intervention insisting that Theresa May get on with Brexit, Johnson eventually changed his tune by 2022, telling the House of Commons: “I have seen absolutely no evidence of successful Russian interference in any electoral event”.

Given Johnson’s record of equivocal and often mendacious statements, combined with the admission from the intelligence services explicitly that they had never been tasked to investigate these matters, we cannot afford to rely on the former Prime Minister’s word.

In response to this glaring and potentially compromising lack of electoral and national security, a group of parliamentarians took the UK Government to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) last March, with the support of campaigning journalism organisation The Citizens. The cross-party group of MPs – including Green Party MP Caroline Lucas, Labour’s Ben Bradshaw and the SNP’s Alyn Smith – claim the Government is infringing our “right to free and fair elections” by failing to act on the findings of the Russia Report.

The court in Strasbourg has now indicated the case both has merit and may be designated an ‘impact case’. It has written to the Government inviting it to respond in detail to the allegations by 26 April.'

'“Following the 2016 EU referendum, but long before the ISC Russia Report, there was a considerable and growing body of evidence that Russia was interested in and acting to disturb Western election processes,” Ricketts continued. “It is a matter of public record that both the U.S. election in 2016 and the French election in 2017 were subject to Russian interference…. Given the evidence that has now amassed of Russian interference, it is important to establish once and for all whether Russia attempted to interfere in the EU Referendum and subsequent UK general elections.” '

Depleted Uranium Tank Shells: How Do They Work?

The controversial depleted uranium shells, whose toxicity and detrimental effect on the environment have been a cause of concern since NATO and the US used them in Kosovo and Iraq, respectively, have once again been thrust into the limelight.

The potent anti-tank munitions made headlines this week after the UK announced that its military assistance to Ukraine may include depleted uranium tank shells that can be used by the Challenger tanks that London already promised to Kiev. So what exactly are these depleted uranium shells and how do they work?

What Are Depleted Uranium Shells and How Hazardous Are They?

The British government pledged earlier this week that it would give Ukraine radioactive depleted uranium ammunition for the British main battle tanks Challenger 2 that London promised the Kiev regime.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has warned that Moscow would react “accordingly” to the transfer of depleted uranium tank shells to Ukraine, where Moscow continues its special military operation.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, for her part, told Sputnik that the UK’s plan to deliver depleted uranium projectiles to Ukraine is London’s latest reckless provocation, aimed at bringing the situation in Ukraine to “a new round of conflict.”

So what are depleted uranium shells and do they pose a threat to human health and the environment? Sputnik explains.

What is Depleted Uranium?

To better understand what depleted uranium (DU) is, it’s necessary to recall that uranium ore contains a mix of isotopes, namely, forms of the element with slightly different physical properties.

This ore is processed to increase the content of the most radioactive isotope, U-235, which is used as nuclear fuel and to make nuclear warheads. The by-product of this uranium enrichment is known as DU, which is still radioactive, but at a much lower level than the starting material.

What is DU Used for?

The main applications of DU pertain to its high density. DU has been used as a counterbalance weight in aircraft, missiles, and even forklift trucks and boat keels.

Additionally, DU is in place in armor-plate for tanks and in armor-piercing shells that cause significant damage upon penetration. It is the very kind of projectile that the UK pledged to deliver to Ukraine, along with the British main battle tanks Challenger 2.

How Do DU Shells Work?

Apart from the explosive substance, a DU projectile typically consists of a plastic cap, an aluminum sabot, a DU penetrator and a thread for fins.

When the DU shell, for example, penetrates a target vehicle, the larger fragments tend to chew up whatever is inside, while the pyrophoricity of the uranium increases the likelihood that the vehicle's fuel and/or ammunition will explode.

The technical term used to describe the process is called "behind-the-target effectiveness."

Is it Safe to Say DU Poses Radiation Hazard?

Yes, because all uranium isotopes are radioactive. As it has already been mentioned, DU is much less radioactive, typically about 40% less than unprocessed uranium.

DU’s radioactivity is mainly related to alpha particles, which do not penetrate the skin. This means that a radiation hazard from DU mainly stems from breathing it in dust, eating or drinking contaminated food or water, or from shrapnel piercing through human skin.

While NATO claims that no human cancer of any type has been seen as a result of exposure to DU, British Army doctors previously warned the UK Ministry of Defence that exposure to DU increased the risk of developing lung, lymph and brain cancer, and recommended a series of safety precautions.

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry in turn warns that to be exposed to radiation from DU, “you have to eat, drink, or breathe it, or get it on your skin”, something that will most likely affect the normal functioning of the kidney, brain, liver, heart, and numerous other systems of a human organism.

Russian military expert Alexey Leonkov told Sputnik in this regard that although this kind of munition does not belong to nuclear weapons, fallout from the use of DU shells is partly tantamount to that of nuclear arms. According to him, the explosion of DU projectiles causes ionizing radiation that remains in such an amount that is dangerous to human health.

“The remnants of the use of this ammunition infect the terrain and armored vehicles. Due to the fact that destroyed armored vehicles are not immediately removed from battlefields, radioactive substances penetrate both the soil and open water reservoirs. Without special measures to denuclearize soil and water, it is impossible to get rid of the consequences from the use of these munitions,” Leonkov pointed out.

He was echoed by Igor Nikulin, a military expert and former member of the United Nations Commission on Biological and Chemical Weapons, who explained in an interview with Sputnik that at the time of the explosion of a depleted uranium shell, its core turns into radioactive dust, which scatters across the surroundings, infects the water and enters human lungs.

“The half-life of such uranium is several billion years, which is why the fallout will be in place for many centuries,” Nikulin said.

Which Conflicts Saw DU Shells Used?

The NATO war machine has used DU munitions in many of its campaigns since the end of the Cold War, sowing up to 2,300 Tons of DU across Iraq during the 1991 Gulf War and the 2003 invasion of the country, also using the weapons in Afghanistan and Syria on a smaller scale.

Separately in 1999, the US and its allies spent 78 Days bombing the now-dissolved nation of Yugoslavia and contaminating the Balkans with at least 15 tons of DU munitions.

In the wake of these bombings, Serbia suffers from one of the highest cancer rates in Europe, with close to 60,000 oncology diagnoses there made each year, and cancer among children is as much as two-and-a-half times above the European average. In the decades since the 1999 events, Serbian medics have also recorded an alarming rise in infertility, autoimmune diseases, and mental disorders.

Leonkov told Sputnik that in this vein, the consequences of the use of this kind of munition affected both the civilian population and the military personnel who used depleted uranium during the above-mentioned conflicts.

“1.5 million such shells were used during the hostilities in Iraq, where tens of thousands of citizens suffered from ionizing radiation and there was a sharp outbreak of oncology and an exacerbation of chronic diseases that then led to casualties. As it turned out later, neither the civilian population of Iraq nor civilians in former Yugoslavia received any compensation from US and UK authorities,” the Russian expert noted.

Nikulin, in turn, struck the same tone, stressing that “the use of such weapons in contiguous territories is extremely undesirable and must be stopped by any means.”

“I emphasize the word ‘any’. These tanks and shells must be destroyed immediately upon crossing the Ukrainian border,” he added.

They spoke after Russian President Vladimir Putin warned on Tuesday that Moscow would be forced to respond in kind if the West starts using weapons with nuclear components.

The remarks followed the UK’s previous announcement that it would provide Ukrainian forces with depleted uranium tank ammunition along with Britain’s Challenger 2 battle tanks, as part of London’s military assistance to Kiev amid the Russian special military operation. Moscow has repeatedly warned that the US and its allies’ military assistance contributes to prolonging the Ukrainian conflict. The Kremlin also said that Washington’s ongoing push to continue arming Kiev turns the US into a party to the Ukrainian standoff.

Annexation sham can't eclipse Ukraine's wins - or Russia's turmoil

It was a spectacle choreographed to convey triumph. A ceremony marking Russia’s formal annexation of four Ukrainian regions took place last Friday in the gilded splendour of the Kremlin’s most majestic hall. The puppet leaders of the annexed regions and Moscow’s elite heard what was meant to be a defiant Putin speech (Shaun Walker deconstructed it as “more angry taxi driver than head of state”). A celebratory concert on Red Square had music, singing and organised flag-waving. Grandiose theatre indeed, and the prelude to a dramatic battlefield victory – for Ukraine.

Barely 24 hours after the Moscow shindig, Ukrainian troops chased Russian forces out of Lyman in Donetsk, which is technically Russian territory. Not one of the four annexed regions of Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk and Luhansk, which supposedly voted to be absorbed into Russia in “referendums” that have no legitimacy under international law, is now fully under Russian control.

Lyman’s recapture is a military debacle for Russia. Peter Beaumont, who has been to the town and sent this memorable dispatch, says Ukraine’s military has found a way of fighting that is more deft and flexible than the Russians’s. But, he stresses, the bigger defeat is psychological. Ukraine continues making gains in the south and east of the country (check our live blog for the unfolding picture) and there are even suggestions that Russia could lose control of Crimea.

Meanwhile, behind the unconvincing pomp in Moscow, Andrew Roth describes a country in turmoil. Hundreds of thousands of men of fighting age have fled Putin’s draft. Opinion polls show tensions have not been as high as they are now in Russia for decades.

Putin’s annexation theatre could, nevertheless, foreshadow a critical phase of escalation as Alissa de Carbonnel, of the International Crisis Group, has powerfully warned. Adding territory makes negotiations with Kyiv impossible and gives Putin a pretext if he decides to respond in ever more draconian ways or even carry out nuclear threats against Ukraine – and its western backers – when it seeks to retake “Russian soil”.

A new start for UK/EU relations? The latest economic forecasts for Ukraine are dire. What can the rest of Europe do beyond military aid? We may get answers this week as the leaders of 44 countries converge on Prague tomorrow (Thursday) for the inaugural session of something called the European Political Community.

This is a Macron idea: the French president outlined it in May as an alternative forum for European democracies, including those such as Ukraine, which aspire to join the EU – and those that have quit.

Views are mixed: Piotr Buras of the ECFR, writing for Euronews, thinks that this new club is a fig leaf to cover the EU's geopolitical woes. Mujtaba Rahman of the Eurasia group has a persuasive Twitter thread on why the EPC could be a turning point in EU/UK relations.

Liz Truss has accepted an invitation to attend the launch and, facing political chaos in the UK (much commented on by the European and international media), she might be glad of the distraction, although as Bob Tait, the Guardian’s Prague correspondent reminded me, she is escaping to a city renowned for defenestrations.

That Samual Pepys I am not, although I wish I was because then this little side blog of mine could be useful to folk in the future. But then I was thinking, will anything of the internet survive in the future?

Like, if there was a disaster, natural or man-made, would whoever survived be able or even want to come back to this technology. I had initially thought this would be an interesting archive for folk hundreds of years in the future but what if it simply vanishes, like dust in the wind.

It's entirely possible that folk in the dark ages had their own form of twitter and nobody knows a thing about it, I find that quite a funny thought. It wasn't dark like lack of light there is just no written records and so much of our documentation exists online that if we disappear who would know, aside from yourself of course cat, the void exists well out of time and space as we know it.

Well let me see, what would I tell someone 500 years in the future about life right now, well in Scotland we are still agitating for a new Independence vote, although it's taking its damn time...

We have 50 year high inflation, the price of food, heating and fuel is high and as a result people will suffer and die. The welfare state is crumbling because of Tory neglect and "New Labour" (read central right) before them thinking a wee bit of privatisation here and there couldn't possibly be a bad thing. Disability benefits, the old age pension and unemployment benefits are too low to live in anything but poverty, check your history books to see how many people they killed with those and the horrors of calling someone terminally ill fit to work etc.

Libraries are closing, they may open them for "heat hubs" though. The education system is still being taught as if we are Victorians being prepared for the mills and factories, completely out dated and in need of reform. There aren't enough houses for people to live in, there are still people who are queer phobic and Trans People have become the new thing to get cross about, in the early 00's it was people on Benefits, see Benefit Britain for further info. Also Fascism is rising again, so there's that.

The Satanic panic is also back, vailed by Qanon, whose threads are all in the far right and directly link to people thinking vaccines are bad, which leads me to the rising rates of Polio, Measles, Mumps, rickets and other diseases making a resurgence and because English water suppliers have been pumping shit into the rivers and sea no doubt we will soon see a return of Cholera, Typhus and other such delights.

Oh, we still have Covid 19 and MonkeyPox which is not a STI although it is more prevalent in the queer community, particularly among men or AMAB folk.

The UK Gov is an international Joke, they are notably absent from helping with all of the above. America's last president seems determined to spend his last years in prison, and good luck to him I say! There have been terrible floods with the Monsoon that follow exceptionally high temps earlier this year in the Sub-Indian continent, China is in Drought, Europe is in Drought, large parts of North America are in Drought.

Famine is rife in Africa, not helped by the war in Ukraine which Putin seems determined to continue despite having lost in the international stage. The footage from Ukraine, like most wars, is awful.

I can't speak much to African countries or South American ones because they rarely turn to them in our news, I know that South Africa has had trouble, as has Nigeria and the war between the Gov and the Tigray people has just resumed. I know that some South American countries are trying to come together over things going on in Argentina and I know that America has fucked over these countries because "Communism bad".

I don't know much about the goings on in Australia or New Zealand either or Japan and other countries in the Pacific, again we get little to no news about these areas unless you go looking for it on news websites. I also don't know much about what is happening in the Middle East aside from the Afghan generalities we are given. I also know there is no legitimate way for people to get to asylum in the UK from these areas, hence the treacherous dingy crossings and people smuggling.

I also know there are good things going on, science progressing slowly, people doing wonderful things and the fact we've made it this far into history shows there is more good folk than bad. This is a basic overlay of the "Oh shit" things of the day. Remember Mr Pepys I am not.

So many people have lived before me, many more will (maybe) live after me. Not a lot of us get recorded, but believe me you still matter. How you treat others matters, how you treat the earth and the living being on it matters. Even if you don't get your name recorded in the annuls of history, you still matter.

State corruption is endemic. 

TI found that between 2008 and 2020, current and former Russian officials owned 28,000 properties in 85 countries

3/ It's not just the top brass who cash in. Even if you're only a middle-ranking official in Russia, your life goals are likely to be to set up your family in comfort in western Europe and send your children to a posh British school. Corruption is how you'll achieve that.

4/ Scams and cheating are ubiquitous. 

If you ever wondered why Russian dashcam videos are all over YouTube, it's because drivers use dashcams as protection against scams such as pedestrians throwing themselves onto cars to claim insurance payouts.

Corruption is the thread which holds Putin's regime together, and money (in dollars or Euros, naturally, not low-value rubles) is its lifeblood. 

And nobody has more of it than Putin himself - at least an estimated $200 billion, salted away in secret funds worldwide.

6/ Like every other state institution in Russia, the armed forces are riddled with corruption at every level. 

This is nothing new: in his 1854 Sevastopol Sketches, Tolstoy wrote of Russian officers: "While they are in the service their main aim is the acquisition of money."

7/ In 1998, Russia's Prosecutor General called the Russian Armed Forces "the most corrupt government structure in Russia". 

If anything, it's got worse since then. 

How does corruption in the Russian military operate, from the bottom to the top?

8/ Corruption starts even before someone joins the military. 

As @kamilkazani has noted, only the poor or the stupid allow themselves to be conscripted. 

The rest get out of it by bribing a doctor or recruiting officer. 

The 'fee' was reportedly between $5,000-$10,000 in 2007.

9/ Up to 70% of those summoned for conscription buy their way out of it, leaving the armed forces with the poorest and least healthy. 

This leaves the Russian military with chronic problems of fitness and efficiency.41061,102

10/ Col Gen Vladimir Mikhailov stated in 2007 that more than 30 percent of the 11,000 men conscripted annually into the Russian Air Force were "mentally unstable," 10 percent suffered from alcohol and drug abuse, and 15 percent were ill or malnourished.

11/ If you get conscripted, you'll be treated as the lowest of the low and exploited ruthlessly by older soldiers, known as 'dyedi' ('uncles'). 

This could include being forced into prostitution, doing unpaid labour, or even selling your own blood to earn a few rubles.

12/ In 2007, conscripts in St Petersburg told Russian media how older soldiers forced them to perform sexual services for influential middle-aged clients or face torture. 

Young soldiers were reportedly forced to go with clients in their cars. 

The dyedi kept a list of 'providers'.

13/ Other soldiers spoke of being "sent out to the park to earn money". It was reportedly possible to pick up a soldier in the centre of Moscow or visit a nearby military base where clients could choose one for $100-500 - money that would go to the dyedi, not the conscript.286883 May 31 14/ If you're a contract soldier - a military professional - you're a step up but are still exploited. Salaries are low ($240 monthly before the Ukraine war). You may well need to buy your own uniforms, boots and fuel.291901 May 31 15/ Newer uniforms and boots of the right size are often unavailable because they've been stolen and sold off, so you'll need to purchase them online. Ironically, ex-NATO surplus boots are reportedly favourites for their comfort and durability.

May 31 16/ You may also need to pay for your own accommodation. Although you will get a bed in a barracks for free, you may find that it's unheated because the money for electricity has been stolen or otherwise gone unpaid. Not much fun in Russia's cold climate.

May 31 17/ There are, however, compensations to being a low-ranking soldier or junior officer - you may be posted to a military depot. These offer endless opportunities for theft. Avito, Russia's equivalent of eBay, is full of adverts for likely stolen items of military equipment.

May 31 18/ Russian bloggers are currently crowdsourcing money to buy equipment for the frontline troops in Ukraine. Ironically, many of the items they're buying were likely stolen from Russian military depots in the first place. These are very good times for corrupt quartermasters.11331,229 May 31 19/ Even tanks aren't immune to the plague of looting. When reserve T-72s were shipped from storage depots to go to Ukraine in March 2022, they reportedly arrived without electronics, optics or even engines - all looted or stripped out. Only 1 in 10 was reportedly usable.31091,089 May 31 20/ In one remarkable instance, a 72-ton prefabricated Pantsir-2PU command bunker was stolen from a military base at Myaglovo, Leningrad Oblast in early 2020. Investigators were unable to discover what had happened to it, but it was most likely taken for the metal's scrap value.

May 31 21/ In a similar incident, a submariner in the Northern Fleet stole parts of devices for controlling a nuclear submarine's reactor. He stole and sold rheostats made of a very expensive palladium-vanadium alloy, but disabled the reactor in the process. Not a good idea! 22/ Let's move up to the mid-ranking officers. Life is a lot cushier at this level as you can sign contracts, command troops and oversee bases. There are a lot more opportunities for corruption at ranks from major through colonel.

23/ Your perks may include using conscripts to build your dacha, or hiring them out to others to work in building sites, fields or factories. Naturally, the conscripts get no compensation for this work. Even Russia's elite missile forces have not escaped this kind of abuse 31 24/ You also have the possibility of stealing your men's wages, as they are paid in cash. Or manipulating budget allocations to claim money for non-existent extra personnel and pocket the difference. Non-existent troops are known as 'dead souls', after a classic Gogol poem.

25/ 'Dead souls' are nothing new. In 1854, the Economist newspaper noted how much the Russian forces in the Crimean War were under strength. "The Russian armies are often armies on paper only. ...9:17 PM · May 31,

May 31 "The colonels ... and officers ... have a direct interest in having as large a number on the books and as small a number on the field as possible - inasmuch as they pocket the pay and rations of the difference between these figures." Plus ça change.1 May 31 27/ Remarkably, the Russian Army doesn't know how many soldiers it has. In 2001, Gen Nikolai Kormiltsev stated that the army had accounted for only 82% of its authorised personnel - something that was regarded as a major achievement. Things are unlikely to have improved since. May 31 28/ Figures leaked to Novye Izvestia newspaper in 2003 indicated that there were at least 30,000 "dead souls" in the armed forces. The 2012 case of Col Sergey Ustinov and Maj Hovik Babayan, two Eastern Military District officers, illustrates how this scam works. On Ukraine, the Nordics and the Foundations of geopolitics

Firstly: What is happening in Ukraine is horrendous and absolutely despicable. It is a crime against peace according to Principle VI of the Nüremberg Principles and a blatant act of war, shattering the European peace that has held for over 70 years. The war crimes being committed are terrible and all responsible should face justice for the atrocities committed.

More informed people than me have made better write-ups on the matter. I’ll focus instead on a very small and selfish area: my home, in a small and distant Northern European country. This is mainly my stream of consciousness as I try to understand what we’re dealing with and what may come.

To get to grips with this, a bit of background is needed.

For your consideration, “Foundations of geopolitics: the geopolitical future of Russia” by Alexandr Dugin. The Wikipedia page is heavily based on John B. Dunlop’s writeup on the book for Stanford, found here. Here’s also a good Twitter-compilation:

A lot of Russia’s actions from 2008 an on can be traced back to the politics outlined in said publication, which has been a key influence on Russia’s elite for the last 30 years: Russian troll farms have worked hard to destabilise both the US and the UK, in part facilitating the rise of neo-nationalism and Brexit. Russia invaded Georgia in 2008 and annexed Crimea in 2014, both blatant acts of aggression against independent nations.

On to the situation with Ukraine. I’m just going to cite Dunlop (2004, accessed 2022) here:

On the key question of Ukraine, Dugin underlines: "Ukraine as a state has no geopolitical meaning. It has no particular cultural import or universal significance, no geographic uniqueness, no ethnic exclusiveness" (377). "Ukraine as an independent state with certain territorial ambitions," he warns, "represents an enormous danger for all of Eurasia and, without resolving the Ukrainian problem, it is in general senseless to speak about continental politics" (348). And he adds that, "[T]he independent existence of Ukraine (especially within its present borders) can make sense only as a 'sanitary cordon'" (379). However, as we have seen, for Dugin all such "sanitary cordons" are inadmissible.

Since then, the ICC has started investigations into war crimes in Ukraine,  Russian planes have breached Swedish airspace and Putin’s men are arresting one of the last survivors of the siege of Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg), one of the most destructive sieges in history (very anti-nazi of them). The nuclear power plant of Zaporizhzhia has been attacked, as has Chernobyl. Thousands of people have died a needless death, over a million has fled.

Now, I am biased in this.

I live in Sweden. I still have some family in Finland, a country which gained its independence in 1917, partly thanks to Lenin and the general confusion of the aftermath of WWI and the Russian revolution. Other countries that gained independence at the same time were Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, who all became NATO-members in 2004, together with Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia. They were invited to join the alliance in 1997. Sweden and Finland, in contrast, have long held a neutral line towards NATO, but that has shifted dramatically over the last week, in both Finland and Sweden.

The empire comprised what today is Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Finland, the Caucasus (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia), Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan), the Baltic Republics (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia), and significant parts of Poland and Turkey.

Putin has stated that “Lenin made an error in 1917 when he let the former Russian territories ‘go.’” (citation from Korhonen’s twitter thread, 2022). This might also be a reason for his call for NATO to roll back to pre-1997 borders; it’s easier to gather your empire back together if NATO-membership isn’t protecting part of it.

And according to the Foundations of geopolitics, Finland is destined to be absorbed into Russia (Dunlop, 2004, accessed 2022):

The "unstable" state of Finland, which "historically enters into the geopolitical space of Russia" […]

Finland has, for reference, a much longer history with Sweden. They were the same country for ~600 years – the earliest maps of Sweden and Northern Europe actually show the area around the Baltic Sea and Gulf of Bothnia with today’s Finland depicted as a county of Sweden, equal to other counties of Sweden. Hell, southern Sweden (Skåne) has been part of the country a shorter time than Finland was, their union being merely 400 years old.

(In contrast, Finland suffered Russian rule for a mere 100 years (1809-1917). So speaking in historical terms, Finland should actually join forces with Sweden and Norway and establish the new Kalmar Union – another project with a history more enduring than what Finland and Russia share.)

Leaving history aside, I’d say a 100 years of growth, development and, most recently, being crowned the happiest country in the world four times running, isn’t “unstable”. And with some math: Finland is just shy, by three years, of being independent (1917–) for a longer time than being part of Russia (1809-1917). Let’s not break that streak, shall we?

But listening to what Putin says, the future looks bleak for Europe as a whole, not only for Finland and the Nordics. He promised not to invade Ukraine, (and people didn’t think he’d do that) and yet here we are. He promises ceasefires and repeatedly breaks them. Russian troops target civilian and bombs children’s hospitals.

It’s hard to negotiate with someone who disregards the rules when he knows the other side will abide by them, come what may.

On the other hand, the last week has filled me with hope. Europe has come together in a marvelous way. The rest of the world has supported sanctions and condemned the invasion. The outpouring of support and assistance for Ukraine and Ukrainians is astounding. Although there are a lot of things that could be done better (looking at you, EU, with dallying about sanctioning Russian gas and oil), I might start feeling… hopeful?

But this is also a dramatic shift in EU politics. The economic collaboration and “rule of rules” that has defined EU politics has turned much more political. Formerly neutral countries have sanctioned Russia and Russian oligarchs. The European defence system might get an overhaul under France. People open their homes and hearts to Ukrainian refugees.

(And of course we should do that to refugees from Syria and other war-torn areas as well. I don’t hold with refusing entry to people in need. Colour or religion doesn’t matter – but nukes and a willingness to invade Europe do.)

But back to my corner of the world.

I have no idea what Russia wants with Finland, to be honest. It’s a country poor in raw materials, if you don’t count lumber and lakes, but high in education and social democratic ideals. Does he want a buffer zone against the scary democratic ideals of The West (which are a threat to him and his cronies)? A re-imagined “Russian empire”? Ukraine is easier to understand – it’s a rich  breadbasket, with a lot of minerals and new pockets of gas (which could undermine the Russian gas-based economy). But what is Finland to him, a country of a thousand lakes and less people than London?

The BBC has outlined five scenarios for how this could end, although I’m sure there are more out there. The diplomatic solution seems to be less and less possible for every day that passes. And after it looks like Belarusian dictator Lukashenko shared an invasion map by mistake, where troops were shown moving into Moldova, the future looks bleak indeed.

It’s impossible to say what will follow. I hope for a quick end to the invasion of Ukraine and the honest, democratic chance for Ukrainians to do as they wish, not follow what the Kremlin dictates.

In the world of today, geography isn’t as important as ideology. The Nordics have shown that a social democratic model works; that you can find a balance of state-controlled industries (education and health care) and a free market (heavy industry, tech, manufacturing).

The world is changing. Why not roll with it, instead of trying to hark back to the age of tsars?

We can but hope and work for a better tomorrow.

The Slowly Crumbling Arrogance of the Center-Right

Israeli Rabbi and pundit Daniel Gordis is not a liberal. But he's not a dyed-in-the-wool conservative either. He's a member of the center-right, which at this point means he basically believes in conservative policies while being committed in principle to the underlying liberal architecture of freedom of expression, democratic norms, fairness and factuality in politics, and respect for minorities. And like many members of the center-right, he's starting to feel uneasy about the decay of this liberal architecture at the hands of his less "center" compatriots. Here's him writing on the recent spate of heavy-handed security actions Israel has taken at Netanyahu's behest against dissident voices (detentions at the border, expelling artists):

Although it is hard to know exactly who is issuing directives to the security services on this issue, the clumsiness leads one to suspect there is an unstated goal. It seems likely that Netanyahu has decided to stoke the embers of “Zionists versus Israel’s enemies” discourse, which will win him points with the right-wing factions of Israeli society he needs to win the next elections, scheduled for next year, but may be called early. 

The prime minister is playing with fire. More than half of Israel’s Jewish citizens are either immigrants from North Africa, Yemen, Iraq and Iran or their descendants. They come from societies where freedom of speech is not nearly as sacrosanct as it is in the U.S. Add in more than 1 million Russian immigrants, many of whom are comfortable with the sort of heavy-handedness President Vladimir Putin is displaying there. Israel needs a leader who can model devotion to the values of liberal societies, not undermine them for the sake of short-term political gains. Appealing to citizens comfortable with authoritarian-leaning regimes may earn Netanyahu short-term political gains, but could eventually yield a country which no one would call “one of the world’s most open democracies.”

The first paragraph can't be stressed enough. Netanyahu doesn't fear confrontation with BDS activists and strident Israel critics. He revels in it, because it allows him to pour gasoline on an "us-vs.-the-world" dynamic which both energizes the right-wing base and puts the squeeze on liberal Zionist voices. Israel's right and the global left exist in symbiosis with one another, and Bibi knows it. The second paragraph, though, needs some unpacking, and brings us back to the title of this post. The defining characteristic of the center-right over the past few decades has been confidence -- I'd say now revealed to be arrogance -- in the absolute stability of the basic liberal norms of Western society. Whether due to cultural chauvinism or something else, they were absolutely sure that the core liberal commitments weren't going anywhere. This thread on Jonah Goldberg provides a good iteration of this issue in the American context -- Goldberg now is recognizing the danger of the decayed form of conservatism that now runs supreme on the right, but doesn't acknowledge how he was a key contributor to it. The reason is that, at the time, he probably thought his dalliances were harmless. A little rabble-rousing here, a little mob-baiting there -- what's the big deal? It's all in good fun, or the wink-and-nod of playing the democratic game to win. The institutions were durable, they'd hold up. The stability of the liberal order was taken for granted. Now, we're finally seeing that confidence fade a little bit. It turns out that liberal and democratic values need work put into them; they don't defend themselves, and they do decay under constant pressure of xenophobia, chauvinism, conspiratorial thinking, and the like. Democracy, as my former professor Melvin Rogers (channeling John Dewey) wrote, is a habit -- and it needs to be practiced. In Gordis' second paragraph you can see both the recognition of the danger but also the denial of it. He locates the danger to Israel's liberal democratic character in its Middle Eastern and Russian Jewish population -- they, you see, don't have the patrimony of liberalism that we otherwise could take for granted. The implication of the paragraph is that Bibi is playing a game, but alas the ostjuden might not realize he doesn't mean it. But why assume Bibi is playing a game? Why assume he does, somewhere, deep down, care about or retain commitment to liberal ideals? It's a relic of the center-right arrogance that assumes the unshakable bond between its tribe and those liberal commitments. But if there's one lesson we've learned over the past few years, its that this connection is far frailer than we thought. Bibi may be playing with fire; but he might really be indifferent to that which gets burned. And since he's the one wielding the flame, it's more than a little arrogant to point to the Russians and the Mizrahim and say they're the real threat. The fact of the matter is that in Israel, or America, or the UK or France or Greece or India or anywhere else that has been blessed even with a temporary and partial spark of the the liberal democratic ideal -- these things require work to survive. They do not persist on their own. The center-right assumed they would, and so did not see the danger that was boiling up in their own yard. And now that it has boiled over, the sobering truth is that there is no natural counterweight to it. The system will not readjust to a natural liberal equilibrium, there is no such equilibrium that exists. An Optimistic But Cautionary Outlook

We fully anticipate blow-out results for second-quarter earnings reports this week. Managements will remain optimistic but also present a more cautionary outlook of the future due to the potential impact of widening trade skirmishes/tariffs and a strengthening dollar on translating results. It is important though that managements continue to invest in the future and do not alter their long-term game plan to enhance their global competitive position, while strengthening their balance sheets. We remain optimistic but caution that managements may offer some outs if trade skirmishes escalate into trade wars. Invest in those companies willing to look over the valley and invest throughout this period to enhance their global competitive position as this too shall pass.

The Past Week

It was an eventful week on the global trade scene as added tariffs went into effect almost everywhere. Clearly, all governments want to show that they mean what they say and say what they mean so they had no choice but to move forward on retaliatory tariffs against Trump’s prior actions. Virtually all corporations and trade groups here and abroad came out against tariffs as a means of resolving trade inequities. Important to note is that European automakers advanced the notion to get rid of all tariffs going both ways for American, European, South Korean and Japanese carmakers. Sounds like Trump’s plan to us. Will this be the thaw that breaks the ice on global trade deals? We hope so!

The Weeks Ahead

We hope that Trump’s upcoming European trip brings some positive movement on trade and other important issues. Beside meetings in the UK and with our NATO partners, Trump is meeting with Putin too.  We also expect that the US will open trade talks directly with Mexico now that their election is over. We may very well end up with bilateral deals with Canada and Mexico.

China is a more complex issue as we want to influence their long-term plans to be dominant in technology by protecting our IP. We were not surprised that North Korea is now raising some red flags in negotiations denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula. Could China be in the background here? Clearly China is playing their North Korean card in its trade discussions with Trump. Smart! Remember that Trump want to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

We are not concerned about trade skirmishes as it is a means to an end in global trade negotiation. If it stays contained, it won’t impact global growth too much and the higher inflation will be transitory. Clearly, we are watching closely to see if it escalates much further.

The financial markets are being held prisoner by global trade concerns. Many of the markets lifted last week after the European automakers made their offer to remove all tariffs. Our market got an additional lift from absolutely terrific employment numbers reported Friday.

Let us state categorically that the global stock markets would have a huge rally and bond yields would rise if there were some resolution of the trade conflicts.

So where are we now?

The US economy is in great shape. The Fed notes came out Wednesday and showed that they believe that the economy is strong and that future inflation will stay contained. However, its members are getting more concerned about trade and noted that if the trade conflict escalates that this may influence their future trajectory of raising the Fed Funds rate.

The employment data reported Friday was strong, but wage gains weakened adding support that the Fed should move slowly raising rates if at all right now. While the Fed discussed a flattening yield curve, which they do not want, members added that it does not mean a slowing or a topping economy as it may have in earlier periods.

The bottom line is that the US economy is doing just fine. Growth will be near or slightly above 4% in second quarter and is likely to exceed 3% for the rest of the year. S & P second-quarter earnings growth is likely to exceed 20% and reach $160 per share for the year. We see further improvement in 2019 too, but the degree depends on trade and consumer/business confidence. A recession is nowhere in sight right now but our antennae are up looking for warning signs. But not yet.

We fully expect growth in the ECB and Japan to improve as we move through the rest of the year and into 2019 after a rough patch caused by weakening production penalized by a very strong Euro and Yen until recently. Here again, we are watching trade negotiations closely as both economies are overly dependent on exports for growth. Clearly the BOJ and ECB are on hold maintaining overly easy monetary policies,

No need to worry about growth in China too, unless the US really raises trade tariffs against Chinese imports. We see no reason to alter our forecast for 6.5% growth in 2018 and slightly less in 2019 led by rising domestic consumption and technology spending. Have you noticed that China is adding reserves and loosening bank-lending rules reversing prior policies? Clearly the government is more concerned about growth and declining stock prices due trade conflicts than they want us to believe.

So what are we doing?

We have made some changes to the composition of our portfolios as the market has created some unique buying opportunities in healthcare, cable, technology and special situations. Our portfolios are still concentrated in financials, capital goods, industrials, technology, industrial commodities including domestic steel and aluminum, and special situations. The common thread is that we own the best in class with the strongest managements with strong financials willing to invest for long-term success. We remain short bonds and long the dollar.

Squaring up to Putin: “It’s an extraordinary story,” a British official told Playbook. “It shows Russia are resorting to desperate measures to create any sort of false pretext they can for invasion. Liz is determined we call out these brazen tactics and continue to expose Russian disinformation and propaganda for what it is.”

UPDATE FROM SOUTHEND: Conservative candidate Anna Firth has been elected MP for Southend West on a 22 percent turnout. None of the major parties contested the by-election, which was held after the incumbent MP David Amess was stabbed to death at a constituency surgery in October.  

DODGY STATS: The statistics watchdog has reprimanded Johnson and Home Secretary Priti Patel over their “misleading” use of statistics when they claimed crime has fallen by 14 percent. The figure excluded fraud and computer misuse, which are the fastest-growing types of crime. The Guardian’s Peter Walker has a write-up.

A MILLION SCANDALS AGO: BylineTimes has spotted a series of private messages between Matt Hancock and Owen Paterson which were quietly released by the government on Thursday. The texts show how Paterson lobbied the then-health secretary about Randox — a firm Paterson was paid to consult for — and the testing services it could offer, and include messages where the former MP complains to Hancock about a lack of follow-up from Public Health England. Alexey Navalny's life is Putin's 'personal' responsibility, say Russian politicians “The state of health of political prisoner Alexey Navalny threatens his life,” said the letter, signed by 11 politicians representing several regional parliaments, as they demanded an independent doctor is immediately allowed to visit Navalny. The opposition figure went on a hunger strike on March 31, demanding “proper medical care” and to be examined by an independent doctor — something his team claims he has been unable to get in the penal colony in Pokrov. His allies have been raising concerns about the jailed Kremlin critic’s health, saying Navalny “is dying” and his doctors said medical tests showed he’s at growing risk of renal failure and heart problems. CNN is unable to independently verify the state of Navalny’s health. “We regard what is happening in relation to Navalny as an attempt on the life of a politician, committed out of personal and political hatred,” the letter, which is open for Russian citizens to sign, said. It was first shared and circulated late Saturday night. “You, the President of the Russian Federation, personally bear responsibility for the life of Alexey Navalny on the territory of the Russian Federation, including in prison facilities – [you bear this responsibility] to Navalny himself, to his relatives, and to the whole world.” it said, while also calling for a review and cancellation of all Navalny’s criminal cases. Countrywide protests The escalating situation has led Navalny’s allies to announce rallies across Russia on April 21 in support of him. “Navalny is now in the colony, his life hanging on a thread,” Leonid Volkov, chief of Navalny’s staff, said in a joint video with Ivan Zhdanov, the director of Alexey Navalny’s anti-corruption foundation (FBK). “He has been on a hunger strike for several weeks now, demanding medical attention. His condition is critical, and we do not know how much longer he can hold out. But it is clear that we do not have time,” he added in the video, which called on citizens across Russia to take to local central squares. Russian ambassador to the UK Andrey Kelin told the BBC in an interview aired Sunday that Navalny is “behaving like a hooligan,” but could have a chance at being released from prison early if he “behaves normally.” He refused to elaborate on what would constitute normal behavior. When pressed by the BBC to answer whether the Russian government was prepared to let Navalny die in prison, Kelin said: “of course he will not be allowed to die in prison. But I can say that Mr Navalny behaves like a hooligan, absolutely, in trying to violate every rule that has been established. His public purpose through all of that is to attract attention, also by saying that today his left hand is sick, tomorrow his leg is sick and all of that stuff.” Addressing critics that say Navalny is not allowed to see his personal doctor, Kelin asked: “How about British prisoners? Do British prisoners request personal doctors?” “[Navalny] has got the necessary medical treatment and believe me, we will take care of his medical treatment,” he added. France’s Foreign Minister said on Sunday his country was “extremely worried” about Navalny’s health. “I consider Mr. Navalny’s situation extremely worrying,” Jean-Yves Le Drian told public broadcaster France 3. “I note that there is really an authoritarian drift in Russia. The Russophobia of the British State

And so, after over a year in the making, the British government’s Integrated Review, outlining its approach to security, defence and foreign policy – entitled Global Britain in a Competitive Age – has finally been published.

Setting out ‘the UK’s role in the world over the next decade’, it combines breezy rhetoric about openness and opportunity, a deliberately ambiguous attitude to China, and a lot of self-aggrandising puff about Britain’s moral mission in the world, best captured in the awkward-sounding phrase, the ‘force-for-good agenda’ – which, in many parts of the Greater Middle East, will sound like a threat.

There is also a troubling pledge to increase the UK’s nuclear warhead stockpile for the first time since the end of the Cold War. This not only makes a mockery of the British state’s own commitment to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty; it also exposes the hypocrisy of its lecturing and punishing the likes of Iran over their nuclear ambitions.

But one aspect of the review that has received relatively little attention is the role played in it by Russia. Not the actual nation Russia, of course. No, the imaginary Russia. The Russia that haunts the Cold War-hewn imagination of the British establishment like no other. In this sense, Russia’s role here is similar to that of climate change. It is the threat that justifies action, the evil that provides the soon-to-be nuked-up British state with a sense of moral mission.

So we’re told several times that Russia is ‘the most acute threat to our security’. We’re told it wants to ‘exploit and undermine democratic systems and open economies’. We’re told that, alongside North Korea and Iran, with which it is routinely grouped, that it is a ‘destabilising’, ‘opportunistic state’.

There is not even a cursory attempt to explain any of this. No attempt to say why Russia is persistently up to no good. That is just a given. Like Kevin, you see, there’s just something about Russia. Something off. Something not right. Something a bit, well, evil.

But then that is the point of Russia. It is the bad guy to Britain’s good guy. Without it, some clearly fear that the British state will lose its moral direction. They need this Russia. They need this chemical-weapon wielding violation of the moral order so as to be for something. ‘We will uphold international rules and norms and hold Russia to account for breaches of these’, the review declares, as if ‘international rules and norms’ were invented precisely for the policing of Russia.

The problem is that this anti-Russian sentiment, which has hung in the air of Britain’s corridors of power for too long, often turns into outright bigotry. After all, there’s a gossamer-thin line between demonising Russia the nation and demonising Russian people. The review’s authors even feel the need to state that ‘the UK respects the people, culture and history of Russia’.

It is a caveat that should not be necessary. But it clearly is, given the tendency of politicians and media alike to brand Russians living in the UK, especially London, as agents of Putin – something The Times had to apologise for recently after it alleged Alexander Temerko, a critic of Putin, was some sort of Kremlin agent.

And no wonder. If anything, we’ve seen an escalation of elite anti-Russian sentiment over the past two decades. In part this has been a reaction to the rise of Vladimir Putin, helped by the arrival of many of his fiercest, most vocal critics in the UK, after arguments and fallouts in the post-Soviet carve-up. They helped create the hellish image of Putin’s Russia that many in politics, academia and the media now hold to be true.

But it was also a product of the elite response to Brexit, when many Remainers, fastening on to this growing anti-Russian sentiment, decided to blame their defeat in the EU referendum on Putin. Indeed, last year’s parliamentary report into allegations of Russian interference in British politics rehearsed many of the same prejudices running, like a red thread, through the Integrated Review. There the Russian state was described, incredibly, as ‘fundamentally nihilistic’. ‘Any actions [Russia] can take which damage the West’, it read, ‘are fundamentally good for Russia’ – which makes it sound less like a nation state than Darth Vader.

And this is just the official caricature of Russian malevolence. Below that we’ve seen the media routinely pin all sorts of wrong on Russia, be it suggesting Dominic Cummings was a Russian spy, or that Russian donors to the Tory Party are doing Putin’s dirty work for it, or even the horrifying portraits of Russian society ahead of the 2018 World Cup.

It seems there is an almost existential need among parts of the British political and media classes to cast Russia as the enemy. Yes, the Russian state is far from a saintly force in the world. But it demands understanding not demonisation. Its annexation of Crimea in 2014, for example, needs to be understood as a strategic, defensive action in the face of perceived NATO expansion, not as an expression of Putin’s evil plan.

And that is what is missing from the integrated review: any understanding of Russia, from its politics to its society. Instead, we have a phantasm. But one that could provoke an all-too-real conflict.

Russian politicians want a piece of Mark Zuckerberg, too

Mark Zuckerberg has testified before Congress and the European Parliament and now Russia is calling for the Facebook CEO to address its politicians as well. The Moscow Times reports that Senator Anton Belyakov suggested the invite, who, pointing to President Putin's calls to "digitize the economy," said, "I am absolutely confident that this is a person who has ideas to share and who is looking to the future." In regards to that effort, Belyakov noted that Zuckerberg had touched on the topic in his earlier testimonies. "After all, he spoke about information security, not giving access to personal data, preventing the dissemination of harmful content," said Belyakov.

Of course, Russia was a common thread throughout Zuckerberg's meetings with US politicians and the CEO told the European Parliament that Facebook was "too slow to identify Russian interference" during the US presidential election. If Zuckerberg decides to appear before Russia's upper chamber of parliament -- and that's a big if -- he would likely be asked to revisit his comments on Russia. One senator suggested Zuckerberg shouldn't be invited at all because he was Russophobic, but Speaker Valentina Matvienko said, "We have to meet with Russophobes too. Why shouldn't the Federation Council enter into dialogue and ask him about his Russophobic statements?"

The state-owned Russian news agency TASS reported that Matvienko found the proposal to invite Zuckerberg "noteworthy." "Whether he will be able to come or not is a secondary issue, but I would support a proposal to invite him to one of our sessions," she said. "I issued an order, we sent an invitation and will try to organize his arrival." UK politicians have requested the Facebook CEO's presence as well, but he has rebuffed their invitations multiple times.

2017 Annual List of Favorite Film Experiences

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

With each passing year, I find it harder to keep up with new release films, as well as the growing queue of ones on my “To See” list. On the other hand, it feels like quality films are sequestered till the end of the year (nothing against summer blockbusters, but with a few exceptions, many are forgotten by the time you get back to your car) and the growing appeal and abundance of quality television fostered by its broader canvas for in-depth storytelling and character development is another distraction. 

But that brings me to one of my favorite things about the holiday season in Los Angeles. The last six weeks or so of the year is filled with many appealing options as films jockey for exposure ahead of the awards season. And I have a great deal of appreciation and gratitude (and a bit of jealousy) for the many artists and others who have the passion to make these visions come to life for us to enjoy.

All the best for a wonderful 2018 and hope that you get a chance to see some of the films below that moved me in some way, sometimes filling me with emotion or awe, or provoking long-lasting thoughts, or just trigger the desire to re-experience and see it again. So, here they are, in no particular order.

Indelible Coming of Age Tales

Call Me By Your Name — Northern Italy, summer, 1983. Having read the André Aciman novel, this was my most anticipated film of 2017. And it did not disappoint. This beautifully told and lushly shot coming of age romance features a remarkable and revelatory (and perhaps best of 2017) performance by newcomer Timothée Chalamet (also in Lady Bird), who achingly captures the universal yearning, passion, heartache, and torment of first love. Kudos also to Armie Hammer and director Luca Guadagnino. While many moments stand out, including the empathetic and compassionate speech by father Michael Stuhlberg (also in Shape of Water) that is the dream of every LGBT kid, it’s the minutes-long reactive close-up on Chalamet as the credits roll and song of yearning plays that devastatingly endures. My favorite of 2017.

Lady Bird — Sacramento, 2002. A semi-autobiographical coming of age in the suburbs tale featuring the humorous, turbulent, and affecting relationship between mother and daughter by Greta Gerwig in her directorial debut. With a fabulous performance by Saoirse Ronan as the head-strong teen who calls herself Lady Bird, a terrific Laurie Metcalf as her mom, and HW alum Beanie Feldstein ’11 as her best friend, this is the rare comedy that is smart, witty, and endearing.

Compelling Period Piece True Stories 

Dunkirk — Dunkirk, France, 1940. A visually and viscerally compelling piece of filmmaking about the miraculous evacuation of 300,000 British troops from the doomed beach at Dunkirk, masterfully crafted by director Christopher Nolan via three intertwined timeframes (a week on the beach, a day by sea, and an hour in the air) that intersect and fold back and ultimately, come together in the end. 

The Post — Washington, DC, 1971. Spielberg + Streep + Hanks = a highly timely and relevant telling of the Washington Post’s saga to publish the Pentagon Papers. Resonant on so many levels with urgent themes of today—the need for a free press, the role of women in a man’s world, and a judicial branch independent from an overreaching executive branch—all told with briskly entertaining and thrilling pace. 

All the Money In The World — UK/Italy, 1973. I’ll admit that I was initially attracted to this pic to see how director Ridley Scott erased Kevin Spacey and recast Christopher Plummer in the role of billionaire J. Paul Getty and reshot major portions of his film six weeks before its release date. Hats off to him for pulling off a very engaging thriller depicting the notorious kidnapping of Getty’s grandson. Michelle Williams is spot-on as the mother who goes toe-to-toe with her infamously frugal father-in-law who refuses to pay ransom for her child. 

Dark Master Works By An Irish Playwright and a Black Comedian 

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri — Ebbing, MO, present day. Loved this very dark dramedy whose story emanates from a tragic event in a small town. There’s plenty of levity and wonderfully drawn characters via Martin McDonagh’s clever screenplay that mixes revenge, redemption, and moral ambiguity, featuring a trio of tremendous performances by raging mother of deceased raped daughter Frances McDormand, small town police chief and target of McDormand’s ire Woody Harrelson, and racist, violent, alcoholic mama’s boy police officer Sam Rockwell. 

Get Out — Suburban countryside, present day America. A creepy, twisted, funny, scary, and subversive version of “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” crossed with a little bit of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” for the post-Obama era. A brilliant, provocative, and unnerving nexus of sophisticated horror, comedy, and extremely biting social satire by Jordan Peele in his directorial debut.

Strange and Untraditional Love Stories 

Phantom Thread —London, circa 1950s. I love Paul Thomas Anderson, and he’s made one strange but riveting movie here. A gorgeous Jonny Greenwood score swings from elegantly jazzy to intensely haunting, setting the mood for this darkly humorous film featuring hard to describe relationships (I hesitate to call it a love story) between an obsessively demanding and fastidious fashion designer (Daniel Day-Lewis supposedly in his last film role), his muse, and his ever-lurking sister/business partner and their respective emotional/psychological (and ultimately perverse) gamesmanship. And one may not listen to water-pouring or toast-buttering, or mushroom omelet eating in the same way again. 

The Shape of Water — Baltimore, circa 1962. Mix in a large dose of Cold War thriller and Creature from the Black Lagoon, plus a little Busby Berkeley, and you either get a political allegory (marginalized “others” whether mute, black, gay, or non-human vs. the Man) or romantic fairy tale. Leave it to Guillermo del Toro to bring us the more “romantic” one in this strange love stories category, an oddly beautiful and enchanting interspecies romance between two mute and isolated beings, one a cleaning woman (a wonderful Sally Hawkins) and the other a Creature From the Black Lagoon-inspired merman kept in a top secret government facility. Arguably, the “monster” in this story is the intensely sadistic government agent played with gusto by Michael Shannon. 

Bizarre Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction Tales 

I, Tonya —  Portland, OR, 1994. A stellar Margot Robbie plays the hard scrabble, trailer-trash, and ultimately disgraced Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding in this unbelievably crazy but true story of her life leading up to the infamous incident before the 1994 Winter Olympics. Told in zippy mockumentary style that is fun to watch, Allison Janney as her zany, abusive mother leads a supporting cast of inept characters involved in Tonya’s dysfunctional life. Directed by Craig Gillispie who also directed the offbeat gem, Lars and the Real Girl. 

The Disaster Artist — Hollywood, 2003. Another bizarre, but true real life story about the enigmatic writer/director Tommy Wiseau who made one of the most absurdly bad films ever that eventually turned into a cult classic (The Room). Humorously portrayed by James Franco, who also directed this offbeat but unexpectedly poignant movie about making a movie, though it’s ultimately more about the importance of friendship, having dreams, and America’s fascination with celebrity and movies. (And the side-by-side comparison of scenes from the actual The Room and recreations in Franco’s film are hysterical.)

Docs About Felines and Cheating Russians 

Kedi — Yes, this a documentary about cats, but it’s not just about cats. Rather it’s a meditative and heartwarming look at the community of felines that inhabit the streets of Istanbul, delving into their centuries-long symbiotic relationship with humans in the old city. The city is teeming with cats that are neither feral or domestic, each with different personalities and lives they share with the people they adopt. And therein lies the heart of this film, as the locals share their bonds and therapeutic experiences with these complex creatures, ranging from the mundane to the profound. 

Icarus – Putin + mysterious deaths + performance-enhancing drug conspiracy = A fascinating and crazy documentary that plays like a spy thriller. It starts out as an odd personal experiment by the filmmaker/amateur cyclist mimicking Lance Armstrong’s doping regimen, but through sheer dumb luck and serendipity, he develops a friendship with Gregory Rodchenkov, the affable, eccentric, and charismatic camera-loving head of Russia’s Anti-Doping Lab…and, as it turns out, the country’s mastermind behind its decades-long state-sponsored doping program. It then becomes a terrifying race to uncover the world’s biggest sports conspiracy, implicating everybody including the Russian president (resulting in the NY Times exposé) while trying to save whistle-blower Rodchenkov’s life from the clutches of Putin. 

Docs about Life and Death 

Obit. —While it may sound morbid, this behind-the-scenes look at the NY Times’ obituary staff writers is enlightening and fascinating, and in fact, quite lively (even its peek into the “morgue,” the paper’s clipping archive). Beyond celebrities and notables, who makes the editorial cut in the pages of the NY Times obit section? And how does one get appropriately celebrated in death, warts and all. Now you can find out.   

Chasing Coral – A wake-up call to the accelerating world-wide death of entire coral reef ecosystems by “coral bleaching.” This remarkably emotional doc follows a team of biologists, including a self-proclaimed “coral nerd” in a race against time to document this die-off with powerful visual evidence, and the result is an inspirational eco drama that moves you to act before it’s too late. 

Others Worth Mentioning 

Baby Driver (the soundtrack and editing alone are worth the thrilling 112 minutes of this stylish heist story about a young getaway driver); It (I don’t generally like horror films, but this retelling of Stephen King’s classic was one of the most engaging and well told of its genre); Star Wars: The Last Jedi (my favorite of the series); Loving Vincent (every frame of the film was hand-painted in the style of Van Gogh); Mudbound; Spider-Man: Homecoming (loved Tom Holland as the new Peter Parker); Beach Rats; The Big Sick; War for the Planet of the Apes;The Only Living Boy in New York; Wonder Woman; Spielberg; Battle of the Sexes; Stronger
