πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ Pride Challenge Day 24: Kinky Boots (2005)
The film that inspired the musical sensation! Charlie Price teams up with fabulous drag queen Lola to safe his late-father's factory.
Rating: 4.9/5
I *love* this film! The musical is one of my favourites - Lola is one of my favourite fictional characters.
The movie plays with gender in a really great way, one of the themes is "What makes a man" and ultimately, I'd argue that the movie gives several answers and no answers. It makes you, the viewer, think about it for yourself, but gives lots of possible examples.
Wish Movie!Charlie was a stronger character though; I love the changes they made to him for the musical. And I'm really glad they took out Lola's subtle little crush on Charlie for the stage version too - so tired of that trope even if it's handled really well in the film.

πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ Pride Challenge Day 12: Bubble Gum
This 2018 short film (directed and shot by a then *14. year. old* Ella Fields) tells the tale of Ingido falling for her friend Blossom - problem is, Ingido's straight.
I pick a really quick one for tonight bc i went to a comedy show ealier and after work i literally did not have time for anything else.
Rating: 4.8/5 bc this is a film by a 14 year old! and still it's freaking awesome - super cute; the actresses are age accurent; the story is relatable. i really liked this one; does it have some weird editing and camera work? yeah. but idc 'cause it was made by a 14yr old! and the overall product is impressive as hell.

πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ Pride Challenge Day 9: Portrait of Jason
This 1967 documentry stars Jason Holliday, a male prostitute and aspiring entertainer, as he recounts moments in his tumultuous life.
Rating: 3.9/5 bc while Mr. Holliday himself is hysterical and his stories are really interesting and funny, he was 100% drunk the entire time he was being filmed. He says himself that he likes a drink, but idk how i feel about him being filmed this drunk for someone else to "make art" 'cause i couldn't find anything on this man other than this film so like...where did the director find him? what conversation led to the making of this film? I couldn't find any explanation online other than Mrs. Shirely Clark (director) was exploring cinema-veritΓ©.
I clearly have mixed feelings about this film. 'Cause it's great seeing a gay black man from the '60's and hearing his story. But like...he's not shy about recounting certain things and you don't know if it's 'cause he's just that open of a person or if it's 'cause he's drunk as all hell; could be both idk but it does feel kinda exploitative.
πŸ€·πŸΎβ€β™€οΈ if i taught a film course I'd definitely show this though.
