Ravi Shankar Bridges: The Best Of Ravi Shankar Legacy Recordings 2001 Bienvenidas/os a #SonidosPranicos de esta semana. Hoy me complace presentar una producción distinta. Haber, hay varios elementos que destacar del maestro Ravi Shankar (1920-2012). En primer lugar yo diría que es el epítome de la figura del Guru; Brahmán de nacimiento, cultor de un arte tradicional, transversalmente considerado un virtuoso (de la citara en este caso), mentor de muchas generaciones y difusor indiscutido de la música india alrededor del mundo. En segundo, 50 años de trayectoria a su haber; además de grabar 30 álbumes de estudio, se presentó en festivales icónicos como el Monterey Pop Festival (1967), Woodstock (1969) y en el Concierto por Bangladesh (1971) entre otras actuaciones memorables (sí, disponibles en internet). Y por último el hito más recordado; Ser el maestro del beatle George Harrison. En 1966, antes que el cuarteto inglés viajara a la India para conocer al Maharishi Mahesh, Harrison ya sea había enamorado de la música hindustaní. Lejos de las cámaras estudió sagradamente con Shankar de quien aprendió citara principalmente. Tiempo más tarde, influido ciertamente por este contacto, Harrison se afilia a la ISKCON colaborando con su difusión hasta sus últimos días. Es importante destacar que una vez madura la trayectoria del maestro Shankar, tuvo la autoridad para fusionar el estilo con elementos sinfónicos y de post producción. Con ese bagaje hoy escuchamos una compilación del año 2001 al alero de la multinacional BMG. Bridges: The best of Ravi Shankar selecciona 11 pistas de muy buen sonido, cada una muy distinta a la otra, cada una representativa de distintas épocas e influencias que el maestro vivenció. Es necesario saber que la base de patrones rítmicos y melódicos de la música de la india son 177, se llaman rāga (राग) y cada uno es un punto de partida. Una vez seleccionado, la velocidad, la duración y la improvisación de los solistas dependerán del “ánimo” que el director del grupo quiera presentar. En esta selección Shankar encuentras ragas alegres como Sandhya Raga (en vivo) y otros muy dramáticos, por ejemplo West eats meat. También escuchamos la participación del violinista Yehudi Menuhin, músico que también cultivó amistad con el maestro B.K.S. Iyengar. En cuanto a las pistas de voces oímos elementos del norte y del sur de India, vocalizaciones particulares que un oído entrenado capta de inmediato (no es mi caso). Sobre los instrumentos oímos santor, vina, tabla, bansuri, flauta, violines, contrabajo y muchas campanas. Todos estos elementos hacen de esta compilación una muestra rica de la música contemporánea de India. Sigue sonando este disco. Debo mencionar que la selección no es de las mejores para la práctica del Yoga. Para ello recomiendo el disco Portrait of Genius o The Best of Ravi Shankar (sí se llama igual que este pero sin el Bridges al inicio). No obstante es muy buena música para sonorizar momentos gratos o para simplemente conocer una muestra de la World music. ¿Cerramos con 2 “datos rosas”? Shankar es padre la cantante pop Nora Jones y de la citarista Anoushka Shankar. Y bonus track: No confundir con el guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar fundador de la iniciativa The art of living.
