just a lil review about cybersix since i binge watched the whole thing last night
1. they really worked against the androgyny which was kinda :/ bc it seemed like when it came to romance, action, emotions, vulnerability, etc it was all the feminine Cybersix whereas the masculine Cybersix (Adrian) was kinda... left nothing? he was p much only there to tell Lucas he couldn’t hang out with him/reject him and i was hoping the series would take a conflict direction of Lucas trying to choose between Adrian and Cybersix to add that layer of gender/sexuality exploration buuuut Adrian p much rejects Lucas outright so many times that Lucas just ends up with Cybersix and Cybersix is cool with it and it just lands as a really boring way to handle something that could have been cool
2. i didn’t understand why Cybersix was disguised as Adrian if she didn’t want to be a man in the first place. like i understand Adrian as a source of having a normal life but in every fantasy she had about Lucas she was a woman so?? why couldn’t she have just disguised herself as a woman so she could be Lucas’ girlfriend in her normal life and Cybersix in her heroine life? like they never really answered questions like does Cybersix actually want to be Adrian? does Cybersix like being both? does Cybersix want to be a normal woman? like these are just kinda glossed over in favor of being like ‘well she’s a lady so who cares’ which i didn’t find satisfying. like in one episode she daydreams of having a normal life with Lucas and its very obvious the creators want you to see Cybersix as nothing more than a cis woman disguised as a man and no offense bUT THATS BORING. it just left me wondering why she disguises herself as Adrian at all if she doesn’t like being a man or being seen as a man. she could just be a lady teacher. 100% of her problems would be solved by buying a blonde wig off amazon and just being a lady. if they weren’t going to do anything with Adrian anyway then... hhhhhhh.....
3. i think the series would’ve benefited from really holding hands with the Adrian/Cybersix dynamic. i think Adrian got put on the back burner really quickly (it feels weird separating him like he’s a different character when he isn’t lol) but they /really/ divorced him like he literally wasn’t the same person as Cybersix. Adrian is a pretty inconsiderate, smart aleck, straight laced dude but Cybersix is like super sensitive, confident, monotone, precise, like there’s never any crossover between the two except the one jealousy episode that honestly was probably my least favorite out of the series bc it once again just didn’t let Adrian be Adrian
4. i mentioned before how all the romance stuff was reserved for Cybersix which just... was really boring for me. like Lucas asks Adrian out to the movies (which he rejects bc of course he does) and i guess Adrian goes home in time to become Cybersix just so she can go watch Lucas stand in line at the movies and imagine being his girlfriend (in a scene where they’re dancing and she’s wearing a gaudy red dress) and its /so forced/??? i just don’t understand why they hated their androgynous character so bad that they wouldn’t let the boundaries of feminine/masculine crossover. like god forbid Adrian becomes emotional around Lucas and god forbid Cybersix didn’t sit there and dream of being a house wife. like... idk.
5. there’s one episode where Lucas asks Adrian if he wants to come watch the game at his place after work and Adrian vaguely says he’ll try to be there and in my head i was imagining a Kiki’s Delivery Service-esque scenario where Cybersix goes out, saves the day, cuts it really close to the game starting, Lucas thinks he’s not coming and then knock knock he’s here! covered in rain but glad he made it!..... instead we got nothing. the game is never brought up again and i think Lucas just shows up later to look at Cybersix as she fights crime
PS i know that didn’t happen in kiki’s delivery service but im just using it as an example of ‘will the main character make it on time to this relationship building event?’
6. its really repetitive. nothing really much to say but every episode is exactly the same as the one before it with the exception of like two. Lucas asks Adrian to hang out, Adrian says no, Adrian becomes Cybersix, Cybersix fights crime, Cybersix wins, Cybersix flirts with Lucas, Cybersix goes home. it’s really cut and dry like after a while it was just another ‘i know they’re gonna make it out of this so there isn’t really any drama or risk’. like they really like to use ‘Lucas is in danger!’ or ‘Cybersix is in danger!’ to bait the other person into coming to save them which is fine once or twice but doing it every episode saps the drama from it. you could probably make a compilation of every time Cybersix gasped and make a half hour track.
7. i was dying for this series to take itself more seriously. the series could work if it deviated from the formula for a handful of episodes like i’m not gonna complain if one episode there is no monster ! its just Adrian and Lucas development or Cybersix development or what have you bc by the end of it we still don’t know anything about anybody
idk just overall i think a lot of missed opportunities to dive into the unique elements of the story
