I didn't know MicroPCs were a thing until I read your post and now I'm super interested! I didn't think getting a "desktop" was possible for me since I don't have the space/money for a big tower, but this might be a game changer. However, I don't know which ones are good? All the ones I'm finding on Amazon are brands I've never heard of with few reviews.
Okay so you're looking for the micro form factor, not necessarily a micropc (which sometimes means a self-contained pc in a sealed case for bargain basement prices that, generally speaking, I would want to do a lot of testing on before I'd trust one.)
Sticking with the big 3 brands again you'd be looking for the Lenovo Tiny line, the Dell Micro Form Factor, and the HP Mini desktop.
These are, generally speaking, business machines and have a higher entry price than your average desktop. However, they are also easier to upgrade than a laptop so as long as you start with a decent processor you can get lower specs on the RAM and the SSD and upgrade them at a later date.
You can also look for open box and manufacturer refurbs if you want to save some money. Desktops are a better option for refurbished computers than laptops, and business desktops are generally pulled from environments where they saw light duty. If you - or anyone - is going to look at refurbished computers I think you should still look for the specs described in the inital post but it is even more important than with a new computer purchase to pay attention to the generation of the processor; you absolutely don't want anything more than a few years old - as of now, August 2023, I wouldn't buy anything older than a 10th-generation i5/i7 processor in a refurbished device, and if it was a 10th gen I'd have a heavy preference for the i7 over the i5.
But you may be able to get some savings simply by looking for older gen processors on new devices - here's a very reasonably priced dell with great specs and a 10th-gen processor that is new in box. ($670 for an i5-10th gen, 32GB RAM, a 1TB SSD, and a Pro OS).
And if you have a VESA mount monitor, there are all kinds of brackets that are available online and compatible with pretty much all extra small form factor PCs for about $15-$40.

Games I 100%ed Between Scrambling to Put Up and Away Holiday Decorations
So... Been a while since I've actually put stuff up on the internets.
I was particularly busy with IRL nonsense, specifically: putting away Christmas decorations followed by putting up Valentines decorations that only lasted one week before I was ordered to put those away and put up Spring decorations because, yes, my family decorates for ALL holidays and seasons. This year is different because St. Patrick and Easter are in the same month, granting me some real downtime for once.
I bring all that up because the games I 100%ed recently were very short and easy.
The first one being One Night, Hot Springs! A very very small visual novel with adorable art about a trans woman celebrating her friend's birthday. Honest, I was intrigued because I'm trans and wanted to play something that was about a trans person. My options were very limited in that department. All I got left is Celeste.
Anyhow, it's FREE on steam and it's a small part of a bigger visual novel that costs about $5 on Steam. The creator is npckc and their art is consistent with all of their games. Thought it would be nice to drop the name so anyone who stumbles on this post can at least consider supporting them.
Next game was Shadow Burglar, a stealth game that made my computer's fan go haywire. I put all the settings on low, how was it still going nuts?
Well, aside from desktop issues, the game played very well. However, there was no save points. Meaning, you have to play the entire two levels in one go. The achievements were barely a thought since I got them instantly. Although, I'd imagine the last one would be trouble for anyone who has no idea what the Konami Code is. Hint: Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A.
Shadow Burglar was free as well bu I don't really think it's worth the time to invest in. Maybe if the developer expanded the concept to a larger game but as is, it's best to focus on other games.
The last game I played, on Steam, during this time was Fable (Anniversary Edition). I've stated before that Fable 2 and 3 were super easy and could be finished in little to no time. I still stand by that even with the first game because the only actual grind was finding all the keys, books, chests, and stuff for the doors. Everything else was a cake walk. Mostly because almost all the achievements had two methods of unlocking them. Didn't even have to open the Demon Doors since flipping one off gets you the achievement.
Oh there was this one issue with a glitched npc that wouldn't let you play the mini game for Twinblade's doll. I got past it by giving him some gems and slowing time.
That was it for the games on Steam. As for Playstation... Have to admit... I purchased a psn subscription.
As painful as it is to admit. I had to because I couldn't get my old PS3 fixed nor could I find a refurbished one nearby. Wish I knew a reliable repair place because I enjoy playing my games on discs rather than stream but I don't so I'm doomed.
And the one game I streamed on psn was the Sly Collection. I already have to original discs but since PS4 can't play PS3 discs I was stuck with the streaming.
It didn't get too bad until the Ms. Ruby boss fight. Which has you match buttons as the icons slowly creep towards Sly. Issue with the streaming was that it lagged a lot on that level so I lost 11 lives to Ms. Ruby because the stream would not register the inputs I made.
The lag did not get better after that. I ended up having to watch Panda King's level in slow motion and Clockwork froze twice! Thankfully, the lag let up once Sly 2 started. It was smooth sailing from there. Got through all of Sly 2 and 3 nice and easy.
Until I had to do the challenges in Sly 3.
Not to say they were hard, far from it. They were just tedious. I did not like the challenges one bit. Something about putting a timer on something drives my anxiety through the roof and I freak out more because of it.
After the challenges were done I just had four mini games and the Sly Collection was 100% complete.
And despite Nintendo being the family friendly company with easy games... 100%ing a Nintendo game is a nightmare! So I had the bright idea of avoiding Nintendo stuff for some time. Only recently restarting Pokémon Scarlet after seeing the teaser for Pokémon ZA.
This puts my total amount of games completed (for these past few months) at 7. 3 from Steam and 4 from the Sly Collection (yes, I'm including the mini games as a separate game much like PSNProfiles does.

This is a blog of okay computers, computers that are available at a pretty good price (in the US; sorry, I'm not up on international pricing or availability). Blog is updated every Friday with one new computer and one refurbished computer that are decently priced for what they are.
Not sure if a computer you're looking at is a good deal? Send an ask (break up the link with spaces) and I'll take a look and let you know (asks answered on Fridays only, so don't come here with urgent asks).

Ways to install Windows 11 on a computer that doesn't meet the Microsoft hardware requirements.
All-in-Ones (where the computer is basically in the monitor) and two-in-ones (where the laptop also acts like a tablet) are very difficult to repair and upgrade, so I do not recommend them.

in other news my husband bought me a new laptop!!!!!!! :)))))) since my macbook is 10 years old and for the last few years has been almost completely unusable(so much of its software and hardware is fucked up and nothing ive tried has fixed its issues, it cant get its iOS updated anymore, it always has to be plugged in to work, and its so slow it cant run more than one program at a time), it is essentially a paperweight. this new laptop is specifically for gaming and he got it for half off (like its normally about $1k but for some reason electronic stores did black friday deals super early) and its brand new, not refurbished, and not an apple (aka shitty) product. he picked it up for me today while i was sleeping so it was just here when i woke up like it was christmas day
ive been customizing stuff on it and playing around with it to get a feel for it. i havent tried to run any games yet but i downloaded witcher 3 (since its a pretty taxing game i think itll be a good performance test), and it installed in like 10 minutes. if that game runs without issue then i bet if i got an extra stick of 8gb ram i could run freaking anything, even games like metro exodus and cyberpunk. altho my desktop PC is an absolute beast and can run any game--my husband built it for me in 2016 for my birthday and even tho it could run cyberpunk surprisingly well with those specs, he recently replaced the graphics card, mother board, and doubled the ram so it's basically a tank of a gaming PC now--i cant take that thing on trips obviously. which i have to do more often than i would like. i really needed a functioning laptop, so im super excited!!!!
in my opinion i dont deserve such a nice thing at all, or even the PC i have, especially because i havent had an income since 2019. but my husband disagrees lol he fuckin rules, i love him. aside from how much he takes care of my chronically ill ass and puts up with my shit, financially supports me, does countless things for me out of pure selflessness, always wants to make me feel good, im always amazed by the thoughtful way he gives me gifts without needing to ( its never my bday or a holiday ykwim). theyre either total surprises to me that blow me away bc the level of attention and care that went into it, or its practical things that hes like "im getting this thing for you bc you need it and you deserve nice tools instead of settling for crap, idc what you think!!!!!!"
he even bought me a brand new iphone too since my iphone is 7yrs old, cant get updated past iOS 12 meaning i cant use or download a ton of apps i rly need and its constantly running out of space and starting to have battery issues. ive been avoiding getting a new one for a long time cuz ive been clinging to having an audio jack but the phone has become so obsolete software-wise that it is more problem than its worth just to have an audio jack. although the new phone has yet to arrive which is frustrating cuz he ordered it 3 weeks ago and it still says its in the order stage, not even shipped.
regardless i feel so sugared rn lmao. im gonna play witcher 3 on this laptop and see how it runs :3

i need a new phone, they're making me get a new sim card and this one's like ... so full
i don't have anywhere to store things to back it up but still have them accessible bc i don't have a desktop and like - my sd card is so full i can't save stuff from the phone to it
but new phones don't have sd card slots anymore????????????????
along with not having headphone jacks
so like i literally cannot buy a new phone and transfer all the crap on this one bc none of them have enough memory????????????
even the really fancy pricey ones are utterly shit in this regard??????????
(for clarity: i am speaking solely of android phones, i know not of iphones, i've given up on apple)
like i want a phone i can do photo edits on AND download mvs AND store multiple instances of 51 fifty-minute long episodes of a single chinese tv show to watch whenever PLUS a bunch of movies and screen recordings?
128GB is NOT ENOUGH for that especially since at least 12GB will end up being OS right?
like i literally was just looking to buy a new phone of the exact same kind i have right now bc it's perfect - it's only flaw is that it's old and full and won't be getting new updates - but i can't bc they're literally only available refurbished and then STILL thin on the ground
most likely bc they're the last phone generation with sd cards and headphone jacks!!! i don't blame people for not giving them up!
i just want to put the new sim card in something else so i don't have to worry about transfering and i can leave most of my stuff where it is and use Old Phone as a music player i guess
but i WOULD get a NEW new phone!!!
if only! they! had! expandable! memory!
we do not speak of cloud storage - if you have to keep paying extra for it, it doesn't count as part of your phone!!!

Normally I hate Windows 10 and wouldn’t recommend it for anything.
But when it comes to torrenting, absolutely you need Win10 or 11. DON’T use Windows 7 to actually download torrents. Once you scan the files you download for viruses and they come up clean though, then you can use them on Windows 7.
(Wait, you have two computers?) Three actually; 2 desktops and a laptop. All but one of those I got refurbished for less than $200. If you need a throwaway Windows 10 desktop PC for torrenting, go with a bare-bones refurbished one and you can get it for $125-150 US. If you need to, you can install your own RAM and stuff. Also, uTorrent and Bittorent are malware now. qBittorent comes recommended by r/P*r*cy.

I thought I had a lead on a decent refurbished desktop computer for my price range, but it turned out to not be promising at all.
Back to the drawing board I guess.
As of now I can basically have only one browsing window open on said computer without taxing its memory, so I guess it’ll still work to post here and to AO3 as well as typing in Google Docs.
I haven’t tried doing any of my graphic design hobbies (mood boards and things) but I’m almost afraid to take that step.
This really is the worst. I wish I had a solution on the horizon.
I suppose I’ll have to make due with what I’ve got. Word processing on my desktop and everything else on my tablet or phone. Why must new computers be so expensive?

Why The Refurbished All-In-One Desktop Is The Best Option.
Tumblr media
The presence of refurbished all in one desktops has also increased because of the increasing popularity of e-commerce websites such as Amazon and Flipkart. With this new trend, there will be more and more competition among retailers for customers, resulting in even better deals for customers. Refurbished desktops are expected to have a slightly lower price than the original ones, but they offer equal quality and performance.

i've got two inquiries. i'm looking for a colour accurate & bright display, 13 inches, doesnt have to be a powerhouse but i want to run krita/clip studio. i have a desktop for more powerful things like triple a games & video editing. below is what i'm considering for myself. 400 nits, 100%srgb (adobe is better but srgb is good enough) medium-sized ssd, windows 10 pro. my budget's $1000 & i need a windows machine.
HP Premium Envy 13 Laptop | 13.3" FHD IPS 100% sRGB Display | 11th Gen Intel 4-Core i5-1135G7 (> i7-1065G7) | 8GB DDR4 512GB SSD | Backlit Fingerprint B&O USB-C Win10 Pro Silver + 32GB Micro SD Card https://a.co/d/efuaE8m
what kind of gaming laptop would run easier tasks like minecraft, roblox, etc. as my friend wants to buy one for her brother. under $500 is ideal, new or used. i know that's a difficult ask. i'm thinking a used/refurb acer nitro? he needs it for high school courses as well. thanks!
in addition to my double question post. just going to add a few more laptops that would support my needs. forgot to mention i need it for notes in college, so fan noise, battery life, durability, and portability are important. around 400 nits of brightness or above. lit keyboard isn't necessary but is nice. i appreciate it!
Acer Swift 3 Thin & Light Laptop | 14" Full HD IPS 100% sRGB Display | AMD Ryzen 7 5700U Octa-Core Processor | 8GB LPDDR4X | 512GB NVMe SSD | WiFi 6 | Backlit KB | FPR | Amazon Alexa | SF314-43-R2YY https://a.co/d/26z6SFN
So it looks like you've got some pretty specific needs and pretty specific ideas about what you want, I'm not sure how much I can help you there. I can say that of the three computers I'm seeing linked, I'd be a bit concerned about spending that much on a 5-year-old laptop (the one with the 8th gen i5) considering that the other specs aren't all that impressive. Other than that, those all seem to be fine machines for the money.
Displays are going to display different colors; what you can do regardless is to calibrate your display. Not to be a million years old, but back in my day that's how we did it to get our designs from our PowerPC iMacs to our printer for the weekly edition of the newspaper. Here are a few ways you can try to calibrate any display (which is a good idea for everyone, tbh): https://www.makeuseof.com/how-to-calibrate-monitor-colors/
I don't know anything about gaming computers or gaming requirements, the MSI I recced earlier today might be a decent option for some basic games, but i think you're stuck with onboard graphics for that one. That may be okay for roblox, it may not; I don't know.
As to noise and battery life, you're going to have to check the reviews. Most ultra-slim computers will have low fan noise simply because their fans are going to be tiny; the issue is that if the fan gets loud because something goes wrong, it's going to be hard to replace. Honestly if you're planning on using one computer for graphics and for being a lightweight study machine, I would say "don't." Get the cheapest, smallest chromebook you can for notes in class and carrying around campus, and invest as much as possible into something with a huge screen and a ton of RAM and a newer processor for your graphics. The refurbished 17" I recced earlier might work, but that is a fucking cafeteria tray sized computer, you don't want to haul it around campus, it won't fit on most of the desks.
But, uh, yeah, as someone who spent a literal decade doing page layout on 13.3" screens, get yourself something that is big enough to have an actual visible workspace for art and design.
