Emmylou Harris and the Nash Ramblers' Ramble in Music City: The Lost Concert is out now! You can get it and hear it everywhere here.
The new album features the 1990 Nashville debut of the acoustic all-star group—Sam Bush, Roy Huskey Jr., Larry Atamanuik, Al Perkins, Jon Randall Stewart—at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center. The concert recording has been newly unearthed and is being released for the first time. The set features entirely different songs from the band's acclaimed live album At the Ryman, with music by A.P. Carter, Rodney Crowell, Ruth Franks, the Louvin Brothers, Doc Pomus, Paul Simon, Townes Van Zandt, and Harris herself.

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the explosion of gun turret #2, an explosion that killed 47 crew members of the USS Iowa. The Iowa was 300 miles off the coast of Puerto Rico, participating in a routine naval training exercise, FLEETEX 3-89, when the center gun room blew. A naval investigation of the incident concluded that the explosion was deliberately caused by crew member Clayton Hartwig. A second subsequent investigation by the GAO, assisted by Sandia National Laboratories, determined that an overram of the powder bags was the likely cause of the center gun room explosion.

Eagles vs. Saints Final Injury Report: 4 out, 2 questionable
The Philadelphia Eagles released their third and final official injury report in advance of their Week 11 game against the New Orleans Saints.
To no surprise, the following four players have been ruled OUT: starting cornerback Ronald Darby, starting cornerback Jalen Mills, veteran running back Darren Sproles, and third string tight end Joshua Perkins.
With Darby and Mills out, it’ll likely be Sidney Jones — who isn’t listed on the final injury — and Rasul Douglas starting at cornerback. Avonte Maddox could then play at nickel cornerback with Corey Graham and/or Tre Sullivan lining up at safety. It’ll be interesting to see how Jones performs in his first NFL start as a boundary corner. It’d be nice to see the 2017 second-round pick step up on Sunday.
Sproles’ absence means the Eagles will once again be down to Josh Adams, Wendell Smallwood, and Corey Clement at running back. The rookie Adams figures to receive the most amount of carries, although there’ll likely be a rotation as always.
Perkins being out means the Eagles have just Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert as healthy tight ends on the active roster. Calling up Richard Rodgers would give them three again.
Two players have been ruled QUESTIONABLE for Sunday’s game: Lane Johnson and Haloti Ngata.
For what it’s worth, Doug Pederson said he expects Johnson to able to start at right tackle. Johnson has been limited in practice the past two weeks due to his sprained MCL and high ankle sprain. An injured Johnson could still be an upgrade on a healthy Halapoulivaati Vaitai.
As for Ngata, he missed practice on Wednesday before being limited on both Thursday and Friday. Seems like he might not be able to suit up. If that’s the case, the Eagles would be down to just Fletcher Cox, Treyvon Hester, and T.Y. McGill at defensive tackle. Hopefully Timmy Jernigan is ready to play because the Eagles could really use him.
The aforementioned Rodgers and Jernigan participated in practice once again. The Eagles have 18 days remaining to activate Rodgers from injured reserve and 10 to activate Jernigan from the non-football injury list. If the team plans on having them for Sunday’s game, the player(s) must be activated to the 53-man roster before 4:00 PM ET on Saturday.
Michael Bennett was limited in practice on Friday but it wasn’t injury related. Maintenance day for the 33-year-old veteran.
UPDATE: The Eagles officially placed Perkins on IR and activated Rodgers. Dick Rod is back.

Breaking down some of Auburn’s top targets in next year’s class.
Yesterday, 247 dropped their new top 247 for the 2022 class. No Auburn commits made the cut but a number of top targets were included. Here’s a breakdown of some early names to know at each position.
Quarterback
5-star Quinn Ewers
4-star MJ Morris
4-star Ty Simpson
4-star Jacurri Brown
3-star Tanner Bailey
Auburn already has its quarterback for the 2021 class in Dematrius Davis thus allowing Chad Morris to shift his attention to finding his man for the 2022 cycle. I have previously written about Morris, Simpson and Bailey. The new name to highlight today is the nation’s top ranked player Quinn Ewers.
Ewers is being billed by 247 as the best QB prospect since Trevor Lawrence. The Southlake Carroll star threw for over 4,000 yards last season tossing 40 touchdowns while only throwing 3 picks. 247’s Crystal Balls and RivalsCast have four total picks for Oklahoma being his eventual school of choice but based off a recent interview with 247’s Steve Wiltfong, Ohio State might actually be the team to beat. Team number 2? That could very well be the Auburn Tigers:
“Obviously they’re one of the most watched football teams every year,” Ewers said. “Just that moment and playing for Auburn with all their fans and millions watching online, it’s crazy to think about playing in front of that big of crowd and atmosphere, it’s just crazy.
“Coach Morris is awesome. I’ve known him for a little bit and I know people coached by him and they say he’s an awesome coach. Even my coaches at my high school have been coached by him at Lake Travis and say he’s an awesome guy to get coached by. Really smart.”
He was scheduled to visit the Plains before the pandemic broke and visits were cancelled. I expect him to make that trek eventually though once visits are allowed again. While it will be tough for Auburn to win this race, it’s clear the Tigers are a major factor alongside Clemson (who has yet to offer but could soon), Ohio State, Oklahoma and Texas. I still believe Simpson is the likeliest man to be Auburn’s 2022 QB commit but Auburn is a legitimate candidate to snag the best player in next year’s class.
Running Back
4-star Emmanuel Henderson
4-star Jaydon Blue
4-star Kody Jones
3-star Quinshon Judkins
3-star Trevor Etienne
The recruitment likely to dominate Auburn fans attention next cycle is Emmanuel Henderson’s. Ranked the nation’s best running back in the 2022 class by 247 and #21 overall, Henderson is one of the most explosive offensive playmakers in next year’s class. He rushed for nearly 2,000 yards last fall and 32 touchdowns for Geneva County. Interestingly, 247’s player comp for Henderson is Kerryon Johnson. The Tigers are believed to be the early favorite but this is going to an Iron Bowl battle to the finish. Could Carnell Williams sign three straight top 5 running backs? That’s where things are heading for the moment. Cadillac is working hard to return Auburn to RBU glory.
Wide Receiver
4-star Greg Gaines
4-star Janiran Bonner
4-star Koji Antwi
4-star Randy Masters
3-star Quincy McAdoo
Following an outstanding 2020 class, it’s been a bit of a struggle on the trail for Kodi Burns in the 2021 cycle. There are still some big names on the board though and with athletes like Tar’varish Dawson and Landen King already committed, Auburn can afford to be picky. As for the 2022 cycle, it’s so early that’s it’s a bit difficult to get a good handle on the WR board. Bonner recently told InsideThe AuburnTigers’s Jason Caldwell that Auburn’s offer was a big deal and Texas native Randy Masters appears to be close with Dematrius Davis. This is a position that will likely become more clear in the coming months.
Tight End
4-star Donovan Green
4-star Holden Staes
As long as Chad Morris is on staff, I expect Auburn to try and sign at least one tight end every cycle. But given the recent success on the trail signing talented tight ends, Auburn might be able to skip it in 2022 if they can’t get a truly elite target.
Offensive Line
4-star Kelvin Banks
4-star Addison Nichols
4-star Kam Dewberry
3-star Dayne Shor
3-star Cameron Williams
Kanaya Charlton
The early returns on Jack Bicknell Jr as a recruiter have been pretty durn good. If he can somehow reel in any of 5-star Tommy Bockermeyer, 5-star Amarius Mims, 4-star Savion Byrd or 4-star James Brockermeyer this class immediately becomes one of the best Auburn has signed in some time. Even without any of those names it’s a strong group. The Tigers are likely to sign at least 5 OL in the 2021 class and could go as high as 6.
For 2022, I expect Auburn to sign a smaller group but hopefully not the tiny ones of cycles past. In my opinion, Auburn should aim to sign 4 offensive lineman every cycle. You don’t wanna just take bodies to have them so signing 3 on the occasion isn’t terrible but if Auburn can consistently bring in 4 man classes, depth should not be a problem moving forward.
In next year’s cycle you can really see Bicknell’s philosophy at work. It’s clear Auburn’s new OL coach prefers to target bigger players that can play tackle with the option to slide inside over Grimes’s preference of guards that he converts to tackles. Of Auburn’s 15 offensive line offers for 2022, 14 are to players listed as offensive tackles per 247. That single interior lineman, Kanaya Chartlon, is 6’6” 329 lbs. Bicknell is going to sign some big fellas.
The two names to keep the closest eye on early are Banks and Shor. Banks recently decommitted from Oklahoma State and is interested in visiting Auburn per Keith Niebuhr. Shor is an Auburn legacy who the Tigers made an early priority going back to Grimes’s tenure. Expect more names to emerge in the coming months. Also expect those names to be of very large human beings.
Defensive Line
4-star Khurtiss Perry
4-star Mykel Williams
4-star Justice Finkley
4-star Tyre West
4-star Caden Story
There is a lot of DL talent in the states of Alabama and Georgia in the 2022 cycle. That’s obviously a very good thing for the Tigers as you will be hard pressed to find a better recruiter of those states than Rodney Garner. The Tigers have a chance to once again sign a loaded DL class in 2021. Don’t expect that to change in 2022 either. Perry is a name to keep a close eye on as he’s been heavily recruited by not only Garner but by Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn since he was an 8th grader. That will be a heated battle between the two instate programs.
Linebacker
4-star Daniel Martin
4-star Jalon Walker
4-star Jaron Willis
4-star TJ Dudley
4-star Harold Perkins
After signing a loaded 2020 class, Travis Williams has only 1 maybe 2 spots to work with in 2021. That’s why the focus has been on elite targets 5-star Smael Mondon, 4-star Xavian Sorey and 4-star Barrett Carter. However, in 2022, T-WILL should have more spots to work with which is good news as next year’s linebacker class is loaded.
Three of Auburn’s top targets are already ranked in the top 100 for next year’s cycle. Both Daniel Martin and Jaron Willis are GA natives so you know the Tigers will have to fight hard to steal them from Kirby Smart. LSU is also a program to keep an eye on with Martin. Jalon Walker is a North Carolina native who already holds an offer from Clemson. Those are going to be some big time battles, something Travis Williams makes a frequent habit of participating in.
Instate wise, TJ Dudley already holds offers from both Auburn and Alabama. He’s only been to Auburn once so undoubtedly once visits are allowed again, the Tigers will work hard to get him back on campus as soon as possible. Coach T-WILL has quickly turned Auburn’s linebacker corps into one of the best in the country and I don’t see that changing soon. If KJ Britt and/or Owen Pappoe can hear their names called in the 1st round, it would add some serious ammunition to Williams’s already formidable recruiting pitch.
Defensive Back
4-star Denver Harris
4-star Trequon Fegans
4-star Bobby Taylor
3-star Jaylin Marshall
3-star Andre Stewart (Auburn Commit)
3-star Brian Dilworth (Auburn Commit)
Dominick Fields
Dainsus Miller
TJ Banks
Auburn’s 2022 DB recruiting is off to a strong start. The Tigers lone two pledges in the 2022 class are both DBs. I suspect Auburn will attempt to sign a minimum of four DBs in this class, probably more.
The two top men on the board, Denver Harris and Trequon Fagans, have some positive connections to the Tigers. Auburn has made some tremendous inroads into North Shore this past cycle landing Dematrius Davis and Jaeden Roberts. They are still trying to flip Shadrach Banks as well. In the 2022 class, Denver Harris will be the most coveted member of the Mustangs and Auburn is deep in this race.
As for Fegans, he’s a standout at Oxford High School. The same program KJ Britt starred at before coming to the Plains. Auburn also recently offered Fegans’s teammate Roc Taylor. If they can flip Taylor that sure wouldn’t hurt their chances with Fegans.
Bobby Taylor is another Texan strongly considering the Tigers. He included Auburn in his top 12 earlier this month. Dominick Fields also listed Auburn in his top group this past weekend. Both are names to watch closely in next year’s cycle.
it’s just a blessing to be where i am right now.☝ ⭐️ #top6 #AGTG @247Sports @coachparker85 pic.twitter.com/hPUswzqwrJ
— Dominick Fields. (@DominickFields8) July 12, 2020
Finally, Auburn was the first program to offer Fairhope star TJ Banks doing so last week. Tennessee immediately followed suit. Banks has a number of family members that attended Auburn and given the Tigers being the first to pull the trigger, you have to like Auburn’s chances early. Long way to go and it looks unlikely any decisions will come in 2020.

Did the Cavs turn down a chance to draft Luka Doncic?
Tumblr media
The Cleveland Cavaliers had the opportunity to add Euroleague MVP Luka Doncic at the 2018 NBA Draft, at the cost of their No. 8 pick, matching salary necessary to absorb Kent Bazemore’s bloated contract, and perhaps another asset. But the Cavaliers passed because they wanted to draft Collin Sexton.
Cleveland Plain-Dealer NBA scribe Joe Vardon reported the Atlanta Hawks contacted Cavaliers management on draft night with an offer: a package centered around Bazemore and the No. 3 pick in exchange for Cleveland’s first-round selection.
A source said the Cavs were offered on draft night the chance to trade up to No. 3 with the Hawks in a deal that would’ve sent Kent Bazemore to Cleveland. Instead, Atlanta swapped spots with No. 5 Dallas, and the Mavericks ended up with Luka Doncic while the Hawks landed Trae Young.
Cleveland wanted Sexton and held firm at No. 8. Again, it’s very, very, very early, but the Cavs have every reason to be pleased with their pick. No one drafted ahead of Sexton is averaging more points per game in Vegas than him.
The move would have required some tricky mathematics to pull off. The Cavs would have had to match the $18 million in salary owed to Bazemore in 2018-19 without sending any expensive long-term contracts back to Atlanta, who is in the middle of a rebuild. Instead, Cleveland sweated out draft night and walked away with Alabama’s Sexton, the player it had targeted all along.
Why would this deal have made sense
At the time, the Cavaliers were in LeBron James limbo. The four-time MVP hadn’t yet decided to opt for free agency, and adding playmakers to his supporting cast was:
a) important, since the team had just been swept out of the NBA Finals, and b) extremely difficult, since the team was also well into the luxury tax.
Mid-level exception aside, the easiest way for Cleveland to add talent this offseason was through the draft. A deal with Atlanta would have offered not only a player considered by many to be 2018’s top prospect, but also a useful veteran 3-and-D wing with playoff experience.
Bringing in Doncic and Bazemore might have helped make the club a more attractive setting for James, who eventually opted out of his contract and signed a four-year deal with the Lakers. It also would have kept some extra talent on the books if he left: a George Hill-Kent Bazemore-Kyle Korver-Luka Doncic-Kevin Love lineup would give the club an rangy starting five that could shoot its way back to the playoffs in 2019. (Its defense would be, uh, interesting).
The Hawks, on the other hand, would have received some cap relief and their point guard of the future in exchange for a hyped prospect in whom they had little interest. Atlanta wasn’t enamored with Doncic, as evidenced by the eventual deal they made with Dallas to slide back from No. 3 to No. 5. Moving back to No. 8 would have given the team the opportunity to select either Young or Sexton, giving the team a blue chip floor general either way. It also would have cleared the final year and $19.2 million of Bazemore’s contract from their books — opening up more than $60M in practical cap space for a solid class of 2019 free agents.
Why didn’t this deal make sense
There had to be more than just three moving parts — two picks and Bazemore — to the offer. The Cavaliers only have a shade over $6M in expiring contracts (Larry Nance Jr., Okaro White, the immortal Kendrick Perkins) they could have sent back to Atlanta, which means they’d have to find another $12 million in matching deals to facilitate a deal that brought back Bazemore. Since that likely wouldn’t include any longer-term money — Bazemore was only signed through 2020 — it’s tough to see how Cleveland would make the financials work.
Could a sign-and-trade involving a one-year contract with restricted free agent Rodney Hood have been the answer? (All sign-and-trades need to be three-year contracts or longer, but Cleveland could have made the final two years of Hood’s deal fully unguaranteed). Would Hood have bought in knowing a year in basketball limbo loomed? Would the Cavs had to throw in future draft considerations to sweeten the pot? There are a lot of moving parts here, and it seems as though the deal was squashed before it could even reach that stage.
While the trade would have brought a couple solid talents to Ohio, it’s a tougher pill for the Hawks to swallow. Atlanta wound up with a much better deal involving the No. 3 pick when they shipped it to Dallas in exchange for the No. 5 and the Mavericks’ top-five protected 2019 first-round pick. With another year to move a useful, if expensive, player like Bazemore, there was no immediate pressure to push the reported Cavaliers trade. Instead, the team’s patience paid off with an asset that could prove more useful than cap space — especially for a bottoming-out team that isn’t exactly a mecca for NBA talent.

So another team passed on Doncic?
It sure seems that way. The Suns took DeAndre Ayton. The Kings took Marvin Bagley. The Hawks traded down to draft Young. Now, we know the Cavaliers reportedly declined the opportunity to move up for Doncic.
Despite his accolades, Doncic became the most divisive prospect at the top of the draft. His work in the Euroleague screams star, but concerns about his game translating from Europe to the NBA took him out of the discussion for first overall pick and somehow put both the Hawks and the Cavaliers in positions where they decided to pass on his potential.

Carson Wentz Gets Jobbed With An 82 Rating In Madden NFL 20
Madden 20 ratings are out, which means it’s time for overreaction.
What players were valued too high? Too low? Who got the ultimate video game diss?
QB Controversies Abound

Does Philly Overvalue Carson Wentz?
The Eagles’ franchise quarterback comes in with an absolutely underwhelming 82 overall rating in Madden 20. Look, I get it, the guy has to prove that he can stay healthy and his mobility appeared to be a bit limited as he recovered from tearing up his knee in 2018. If we follow a similar line of thinking, it makes some sense that Deshaun Watson, who also suffered a comparable injury in the same season, has the same overall rating. However, I need someone at EA Sports to explain the presence of Baker-freaking-Mayfield as a higher-rated 83. Will he put up some killer numbers with OBJ and Jarvis Landry streaking downfield? Of course. Has he put together the same kind of sustained excellence over the majority of a season like Wentz or even Watson? I say nay. Jared Goff being ahead of Wentz is nearly as perplexing, though I imagine it’s just a masterful job of trolling Eagles fans. Though, it has made our office buzz and wonder… do we overrate Carson Wentz?
Aaron Rodgers not in the Top-5?
In what world is Aaron Rodgers not a Top-5 QB in the NFL? Patrick Mahomes leading the list makes sense as he’s the reigning, defending, undisputed league MVP from a year ago and is the lead among numerous sportsbooks to do the same in 2019-20. Tom Brady’s placement as a close #2 is fair, but that’s where the wheels fall off. Philip Rivers is the THIRD-BEST QUARTERBACK IN THE NFL? He’s two full points ahead of Drew Brees? Really? Andrew Luck is rated in line with Brees? Russell Wilson -the modern-day Michael “Run around as my O-Line collapses and hope I don’t die” Vick- gets a boost due to his speed and elusiveness. For my money, flip Rodgers and Rivers and I’ll calm down.
Mitchell Trubisky’s 75 Overall Madden Rating Will Enrage Chicago Bears Fans
I don’t think Trubisky is by any means a Top-10 or even Top-15 quarterback, but holy shnikies this is bad. Alex Smith is rated higher, despite suffering one of the most gruesome leg injuries we’ve seen in years. Lamar Jackson’s NINETY-FOUR speed rating likely led to his one point lead in the overall category, but does anyone really think Trubisky is roughly the same player as journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick?
Nickfolean Kryptonite
Former Eagles QB and Super Bowl LII MVP Nick Foles has been installed as a 77 overall player, the exact same rating as Alex Smith. Is he really worse than Jimmy Garoppolo? I’d say no. Worse than Matthew Stafford? Sure.
A Giant Disappointment
Eli Manning is the 36th overall rated QB with an overall score of 72. That makes him the lowest-rated starting QB in the NFC East behind Wentz (82), Dak Prescott (81), and Smith (77). The Giants’ first round pick Daniel Jones comes in way below Manning with an overall rating of 63, a mere point ahead of third-stringer Kyle Lauletta.
Kevin Kinkead has the rating for every Eagles player, along with some news and notes after the jump:

Fletcher Cox, at 96, is the highest rated Eagles player in the game and the only Bird in the top 15. Jason Kelce is second, listed at 94, and Zach Ertz is third, given a 93 rating.
Desean Jaccson got an 85.
They ranked Ronald Darby as the best Birds corner, with an 82. Avonte Maddox was second with a 78 and Jalen Mills got a 74. Sidney Jones is a 76 and Cre’Von LeBlanc a 73.
First round draft pick Andre Dillard is rated a 70, which feels low to me, but of course I don’t know how you rate a guy who has never played an NFL game.
Stefen Wisniewski was rated 66, which is really low. Wis is a good player.
Rick Lovato, the long snapper, is listed as a backup tight end and rated a 41.
Nate Sudfeld and Clayton Thorson are both in the bottom five of the Eagles list, with a 57 and 56, respectively.
Cox, Ertz, and Kelce all were given a 98 awareness rating.
The fastest Bird? Madden has a five way tie between Maddox, Jaccson, Darby, Shelton Gibson, and Josh Hawkins, all given a 93.
Blake Countess and Maddox have the Birds’ highest acceleration rating, a 94.
Maddox was given a team-high 96 agility rating.
Brandon Brooks was given a team-high 96 strength rating.
What do you think? Did EA Sports get it right?

Final Injury Report: Eagles could be without top five cornerbacks against Giants
The Philadelphia Eagles released their third and final official injury report on Friday in advance of their Week 12 game against the New York Giants.
It’s very possible the Eagles might be without their top five cornerbacks on Sunday. Ronald Darby is on injured reserve and the following players have been ruled out: Jalen MIlls, Avonte Maddox, and Sidney Jones. So that’s four of the top five who will definitely miss the game.
It seems like there’s some level of hope that Rasul Douglas might play; he’s ruled questionable to play. But Douglas didn’t participate in practice all week so that might be a generous designation. Even if he does play, he might not be able to make it through the game.
It’s looking like the Eagles will be down to just Chandon Sullivan, De’Vante Bausby, and Cre’Von LeBlanc against the Giants. Yikes. The Eagles have been so thin at corner in practice that they’ve actually been using wide receivers for that position. Double yikes. Jim Schwartz’s secondary will be mightily tested by the likes of Odell Beckham Jr. and Sterling Shepard. On paper, Eli Manning seems poised for a big day.
As is the Eagles didn’t have enough injuries on defense, starting linebacker Jordan Hicks will also be out. Nigel Bradham will likely take his place at middle linebacker. We should also see more playing time for Kamu Grugier-Hill and Nathan Gerry.
Darren Sproles is still out, as expected. The Eagles will once again enter a game with just Josh Adams, Corey Clement, and Wendell Smallwood at running back. Adams figures to receive a bulk of the team’s backfield touches.
Timmy Jernigan is on track to make his 2018 debut on Sunday after fully participating in practice all week.

The Cavs Fixed Some Big Problems. Will It Be Enough?
With just hours remaining before the NBA trade deadline, the slumping Cleveland Cavaliers took drastic action: They traded away half of their rotation. They added younger, more athletic wing players and solid bench contributors. They added a veteran point guard. They at least attempted to shore up a disastrous perimeter defense. And while the team is undeniably improved as a collection of talent, and probably improved as an Eastern Conference contender, it’s unclear whether the moves will be enough to stage a legitimate challenge to the Golden State Warriors — or to convince LeBron James to stick around this summer.
Cleveland added Jordan Clarkson and Larry Nance Jr. from the Lakers and reportedly George Hill from Sacramento and Rodney Hood from Utah. The Cavs also brought back a conditional second-round pick in the deal with Miami for Dwyane Wade.
Just as important as the players coming in for Cleveland are those on their way out: Isaiah Thomas — the centerpiece of the Kyrie Irving trade during the offseason — has been terrible since returning from a hip injury early last month. Derrick Rose, Jae Crowder and Iman Shumpert have each disappointed in their own way. They are now all gone. Reallocating their minutes to even replacement-level players would have nudged the Cavs’ outlook upward; giving them to competent or above-average players should provide a massive lift. Wade is a more significant loss — it was his stewardship of the second unit that stabilized the team early in the season — but with rookie Cedi Osman seeing more playing time and now with the additions of Hood and Clarkson to the wing rotation, Wade’s role likely would have been reduced.
Cleveland has more live bodies and young talent than it did before these moves. But young talent doesn’t necessarily translate to a better outlook on the season. According to an updated version of FiveThirtyEight’s CARMELO projection that uses Box Plus/Minus and Real Plus-Minus data from this season, the current Cavaliers roster would project to win 46 games in a fresh 82-game season. That’s an improvement from the weak projection for Cleveland’s previous roster, which came in at a projected 43 wins, but still not very impressive for a team that views itself as a legitimate title contender.
How the new Cavs would have projected
Full-season CARMELO projections for the Cleveland Cavaliers, after accounting for Thursday’s trades
Player Min. per game Off plus/minus Def plus/minus George Hill 25 +0.8 -1.1 Jordan Clarkson 25 +0.5 -2.0 Rodney Hood 25 +0.3 -2.0 LeBron James 33 +5.4 +0.8 Larry Nance Jr. 20 -0.3 +2.1 Kevin Love 26 +2.1 +0.4 JR Smith 15 -0.3 -1.3 Tristan Thompson 25 -1.2 0.0 Jeff Green 16 -0.9 -1.1 Kyle Korver 14 +1.0 -1.2 Cedi Osman 5 -1.5 -0.4 Ante Zizic 7 -2.2 +0.3 John Holland 0 -3.2 -1.1 London Perrantes 0 -4.6 -1.2 Replacement-level players 4 -1.7 -0.3 Team total 240 +4.3 -2.1 wins losses Cavaliers’ projected record 46.0 36.0
This is obviously a rough projection that doesn’t take into account the relatively good fit for the incoming players, nor does it account for further tinkering. (According to Marc Stein of The New York Times, Cleveland is leaning toward adding Kendrick Perkins, who was recently playing in the G League, to improve its locker room chemistry.) And on those fronts, there are reasons for Cleveland to be optimistic.
Hill is the quintessential off-ball point guard who thrives on off-ball shooting but can initiate the offense if necessary. His overall numbers have been down with Sacramento, but at age 31, he is shooting a career-best 45.3 percent on 3-pointers and 48.1 percent on corner threes; he will see a lot of open looks playing with LeBron. More important will be whether his plummeting defensive numbers are an accurate reflection of his ability or a symptom of playing with other Sacramento Kings. The Cavs have had a rotating cast of some of the league’s worst defenders playing point guard this season — Rose, Thomas, Jose Calderon — so it’s not as though Hill could do much more harm than has already been done. But if he can contribute competent defense at the point guard position, it would be a first for this iteration of LeBron’s Cavs.
Hood’s role will be as a volume scorer and the Cavs’ secondary shot creator. He obviously isn’t a one-to-one replacement for Irving, but he’s been relatively efficient (55.1 true shooting percentage) on relatively high usage (27.5 usage percentage). For reference, that’s roughly comparable to John Wall’s usage rate and better than his efficiency. It’s his first season carrying that sort of load, and he’ll have to adjust to the Cleveland offense, but his solid outside shooting (38.9 percent this season, 37 percent for his career) should ease that transition. And while Hood is a below-average defender, at 6-foot-8 he isn’t as difficult to hide as Thomas. Plus, with Rudy Gobert missing a bunch of time to injury this season, there’s reason to believe that Hood’s terrible on/off defensive numbers (the defense is 6.2 points better with him off the floor) were thrown off a bit because of mismatched lineups.
Nance and Clarkson should see big minutes in bench roles. Nance is a good defender and rebounder and a strong finisher, but he has struggled as a pick-and-roll screener. According to Second Spectrum, the Lakers have scored just 78.2 points per 100 chances created by Nance pick-and-roll possessions, including 82.1 points per 100 when paired with Clarkson. Both numbers are awful. The Cavs don’t play at the same warp speed as the Lakers, so Nance will have to adjust to the new offense. But he provides a sturdy, young big off the bench for a team that had relied on calcifying veterans, undersized stretch fours and combinations of the two.
Clarkson, meanwhile, gives the Cavs an acceptable backup point guard. He’s a decent shooter, a decent passer, a decent scorer and a half-decent defender, which makes him a seismic upgrade over what the Cavs have been working with at that position.
For the first time since LeBron has been back in town, the Cavaliers have a roster stocked with young, active contributors, not young stars mixed with ancient role players. LeBron has a history of incorporating the aged — think Kyle Korver, James Jones, Mike Miller, Richard Jefferson — but hasn’t had to incorporate many younger players whose talents extend past standing behind the 3-point line waiting for him to make something happen. If things go well, the Cavs may thrive in a way they haven’t to this point. If they don’t, well, they were dysfunctional to begin with. They could have swapped in a half-dozen potted plants wearing Adidas and improved the defense.
It’s difficult to project just how such a drastic retooling will gel by the time the playoffs roll around. But the effect on James’s free agency should be more clear: The Cavs have committed to winning in the current window but are doing so on their own terms. According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, Cavs GM Koby Altman neither consulted LeBron on today’s moves, nor did he ask James to make a commitment beyond this season before the moves were made. Hood and Nance are solid pieces around whom the Cavs can build a respectable roster if James leaves in free agency. And they still have the Brooklyn first rounder that came in the Kyrie Irving deal. Cleveland began the day attempting to chase down DeAndre Jordan and Kemba Walker and, more abstractly, to erase the disarray that the Irving trade set into motion. They ended up making a complex series of moves that makes them better without adding an All-Star. That may be enough. Or it may not.
