I’m definitely not alone in feeling that Romania doesn’t have enough songs of a good enough quality to justify a selection this long – it was a slog to get through, and my ranking gets pretty arbitrary in the mid-lower part. I only enjoy less than half of these songs, most songs I’m indifferent to or straight up dislike. However, there are a few gems here.

Avere Paura was the song that stuck with me most after first listen. A powerful rock ballad, I really like the strings in this, soft in the verses and frantic in the chorus. I also like how it slows down the phrases right before the chorus before letting loose there. Except for that moment, it is a little formulaic, it proceeds exactly how you’d expect, but I think it’s overall a good song, I get swept up in it.

Ireligios was my standout ballad of the selection, I love the jazzy rhythm in the chorus and the harmonies from the backing singers. However, The Other Half Of Me came close, it’s a very competent ballad, probably the most slick and polished of the lot. It’s got the all the drama and emotional intensity I’d expect from a song like this.

I enjoy Do Svidaniya a lot, it’s a basic pop track, but it’s a bop, that chorus gets stuck in your head and the drop is also catchy. Then there’s Llamame, which I like the sound of, it’s well produced and sounds modern and fresh – I’m very interested to see how it comes across live, it feels to me more like the sort of song you listen to than you watch be performed, but the song itself is catchy, and if the vibe it creates can be matched on stage it could be something special.

If any of my top 5 manage to win I’ll be happy. A national final with just one great song amongst a lot of duds is better for Eurovision than one with a lot of decent songs but no standouts – I don’t know if Romania quite have that great song, but they’ve definitely got songs that should be good enough to make the final. I can see Do Svidaniya, The Other Half Of Me, and Llamame if staged right doing really well. Even though Avere paura is my favourite of them, I think it’d be the least likely to succeed out of my top 5, so I’m not too fussed about it winning.

• Alexa - this one was pretty but nothing special. Idk why I expected something like Nordlyset (MGP 2021)

• Alina Amon - good ballad but that's about it

• ANA - wow stock mall music i'm sorry

Greatest Golf Nicknames

“What’s in a name?”

– Bill Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet

Nicknames are listed in descending order of greatness, so the last is the best.

Honorable Mention:

“Shooter” McGavin, Roy “Tin Cup” McAvoy

Both outstanding players in the mid-to-late 90s, McGavin and McAvoy suffered crushing defeats during the 1996 season. McGavin lost the Gold Jacket to a young upstart bomber with an unorthodox style in Happy Gilmore, and McAvoy famously lost the U.S. Open to Peter Jacobsen by taking 12 on the final hole (he did get the girl when David Simms took himself out of contention by laying up though). Both remain legendary figures in the golf world.

Scott “The Choke” Hoch

Mr. Hoch probably doesn’t relish this nickname, but it’s a great one. He was known for choking away major titles, especially at the 1989 Masters when he missed two three-foot putts to give Sir Nick Faldo the title.

Greg “The Great White Shark” Norman

Perfectly fitting name for the Australian. He even kind of looks like a shark. In fact, if you were to picture the human version of a shark, it would be Greg Norman.

Hal “Halimoney” Sutton

He has three ex-wives.

Louis “Shrek” Oosthuizen

Yes, he does resemble the ogre. His real name is Lodewicus Theodorus Oosthuizen, and if that was my moniker, I’d make everyone call me by my full name at all times.

Father and son. Fantastic.

“Champagne Tony” Lema

A sad story but a fantastic nickname. Champagne Tony won the 1964 Open Championship at St. Andrews before dying in a plane crash in 1966 at the age of 32. He got the nickname when he promised the press champagne if he won the Orange County Open in 1962 (he did).

Miguel “The Most Interesting Man in the World” and “The Mechanic” Angel Jimenez

Probably the smoothest dude to ever tee it up, hence “The Most Interesting Man in the World”. He also worked in a garage for 6 months before turning pro, hence, “The Mechanic”.

Ernie “The Big Easy” Els

Named after that awesome, fluid swing. Does anyone else feel like he should have won a lot more than he did?

Mildred “Babe” Zaharias, Jack “The Golden Bear” Nicklaus, Sam “Slammin’ Sam” Snead, Ben “The Hawk” Hogan, Gary “The Black Knight” Player, Gene “The Squire” Sarazen, Eldrick “Tiger” Woods, Arnold “The King” Palmer, Annika “Miss 59” Sorenstam

These are all in their own group because they’re collectively the best players golf has ever seen. A few great ones, but I like “The Black Knight” the best.

John “Long John” and “Wild Thing” and “The Lion” Daly

So he may not have the greatest actual nicknames, but John Daly will always be in a league of his own. With a crazy swing and an even crazier personal life, it’s hard not to root for Long John. Unfortunately, “The Lion” nickname was self-appointed, which never works and should be avoided by every human in any endeavor.

Obviously there are more great monikers, Including “Boom Boom”, “Huckleberry Dillinger”, “The Scientist”, etc. Feel free to yell at me if I missed one. Have a fantastic rest of the weekend and happy golfing!

Mâine debutează Festivalul Umorului ”Constantin Tănase”. Se împlinesc 50 de ani de la prima ediție!

Pandemia de coronavirus a știrbit din amploarea ediției din acest an a Festivalului Umorului ”Constantin Tănase”, una jubileu, ținând cont că se împlinesc 50 de ani de la prima ediție.

Festivalul va debuta vineri, 18 septembrie, în Parcul Copou, acolo unde va avea loc lansarea unui album jubiliar, un jurnal al tuturor edițiilor de festival din 1970 și până azi.

Tot acolo va avea loc și vernisajul unei expoziții, cei prezenți în zonă putând admira caricaturile premiate la concursul de gen, desfășurat de-a lungul celor 50 de ediții.

Expoziții, lansări de carte, premieri se vor desfășura pe parcursul celor trei zile și în alte locații ale orașului: în Centrul Civic, la Muzeul Județean ”Ștefan cel Mare” Vaslui, în holul Primăriei, la Biblioteca Județeană. Nu vor lipsi nici caricaturiștii, care vor executa portrete ”la minut”.

Vedete incontestabile ale Festivalului au fost și vor fi și anul acesta, actorii marilor teatre de comedie. Aceștia vor evolua pe o scenă amplasată în Centrul Civic. Intrarea în spațiul amenajat este liberă, în limita a 500 de locuri. În schimb, toate momentele artistice vor fi proiectate și pe un ecran uriaș.

Vineri, seria spectacolelor de teatru se va deschide cu piesa ”Scandal in familie”, o comedie romantică în regia lui Răzvan Săvescu , pusă în scenă de Wonder Theatre. Din distribuție fac parte Adriana Trandafir, Marius Bodochi, Alexandra Apetrei, Paula Chirilă, Andrei Mateiu, Răzvan Oprea.

O farsă salbatică cu amanți, încurcături, o întâlnire la miezul nopții și un urs flămând. Adică hohote de râs fără întrerupere de la început până la final.

Tot vineri, un al doilea spectacol, ”Fă-mi loc!” , regizat de Radu Beligan și pus în scenă de Asociaţia INSPIRA, este un spectacol care ne invită să reflectăm asupra propriei noastre existenţe, dincolo de orice convenienţă socială. Din distribuție fac parte actorii Medeea Marinescu și Marius Manole.

Sâmbătă, organizatorii au invitat Teatrul Național de Operetă și Musical “Ion Dacian” București și ne invită la ”𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐲 𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐠 – 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐚 𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧ă” – un spectacol cu piese de pe coloana sonoră a unor filme și musicaluri celebre, sub conducerea muzicală a dirijorului Constantin Adrian Grigore.

Arii celebre din filme precum ”My Fair Lady” sau ”Dirty Dancing ” o să vă facă să vă simțiți, mai buni, mai frumoși sau, poate, mai sinceri și mai îndrăgostiți. O seară de neuitat, promit organizatorii!

Duminică, spectacolul „Șlagăre in revenire” readuce în atenția publicului cele mai frumoase cântece din ultimii 60 de ani, create de mari compozitori români ca Horia Moculescu, Marius Țeicu, Dan Dimitriu, Nicolae Caragea. Publicul spectator se va putea delecta cu melodii românești binecunoscute – „Hai coșar, coșar”, „Lalele, lalele”, „Să mori din dragoste rănită”, „Dor de viață”, „Să nu uităm să iubim trandafirii”, in interpretarea artistilor Teatrului de Revista Majestic, printre care Nico, Daniela Răduică, Daniel Iordachioae, Romeo Zaharia.

”Festivalul de Umor “Constantin Tănase”, festival intrat în tradiția culturală a județului, a căpătat o față nouă în ultimii ani, când am remodelat tot ceea ce înseamnă modul de organizare a Festivalului, publicul țintă, modalitățile concrete de prezentare, am mărit numărul zilelor în care se desfășoară Festivalul, astfel încât am ajuns ca în ultimii ani manifestarea să se desfășoare, în permanență, cu sălile pline. Biletele au fost plătite de spectatori, deci nu putem spune că au fost aduși cu forța în incintele în care se desfășura în mod obișnuit Festivalul, iar asta denotă că am făcut bine ce am făcut. Anul acesta ne-a determinat ca, în condiții diferite de cele în care organizam evenimentul în anii trecuți, să aducem în fața vasluienilor pe cei care au susținut de-a lungul anilor festivalul. Desfășurarea acțiunilor și a spectacolelor va fi, în cea mai mare măsură, în locuri publice. Am invitat câteva trupe cu o valoare confirmată și sper ca spectacolele oferite de acestea să fie apreciate de vasluieni.

Sperăm și că măsurile de acum nu vor fi veșnice și vom putea relua desfășurarea Festivalului într-un cadru adecvat, care să dea posibilitatea mai multor trupe de valoare, din țară și din străinătate, să fie prezente la Vaslui. Spun asta, cu atât mai mult cu cât ne-am propus ca ediția viitoare să fie găzduită în sala de spectacole a Teatrului din Vaslui, care va funcționa în cadrul Centrului Cultural ”Dimitrie Cantemir”. Pas cu pas, ne apropiem de finalizarea lucrărilor la acest centru, fosta Casă a Armatei, și acolo vor fi acele manifestări ”de debut” ale Festivalului, precum și cele de premiere. Centru va avea o sală foarte frumoasă, atractivă, care va găzdui și stagiunea permanentă a unui teatru experimental, pe care dorim să îl promovăm, dar și a Teatrului ”Victor Ion Popa” Bârlad, finanțat tot de Consiliul Județean Vaslui.

Am vrut să dăm o față nouă tuturor activităților culturale din județul Vaslui și, iată, la anul, când se va desfășura Festivalul Internațional ”Hora din Străbuni”, organizat de noi în colaborare cu Primăria Vaslui și alte câteva primării din județ, vrem să inaugurăm și Centrul Cultural ”Dimitrie Cantemir” ”, a spus Dumitru Buzatu, președintele Consiliului Județean Vaslui.
