who’s excited for stats so far?? i bet none of you are but i’m inflicting them anyway! ...under a cut.
so far, though, we have 198 separate submissions across 166 works!
so far the longest submission piece is 551 words long! wow! there are also another 3 submissions that are over 300 words long, and one piece has 797 words across 7 submissions! the shortest submission, to contrast, is 5 words long! that’s also great!
there are currently 4 artists that have had 3 pieces of art each submitted, and 8 artists that have had 2 pieces. that means there’s currently 137 other artists! oh sorry, while i was drafting this post we got a fourth submission for one of the four.
how about things anyone can go look at? there are currently 7 pieces of public art that have been submitted! four of them are from canada (and 3 are from the calgary specifically), one is in the netherlands, one is in spain, and one is in new york. the fourth canadian one also has copies in spain, japan, and arkansas. there are also 3 submitted buildings! two are in spain, and one is in thailand!
gender! we’ve got 122 pieces from male artists, and 32 pieces by female artists! yes that doesn’t add up to 166, the other 12 are either multiple artists, unknown artists, or i felt like a creeper trying to trawl through their tumblr/website and it wasn’t in their bio. sadly, we don’t have any openly trans, nb, or otherwise genderqueer artists submitted (where openly is “i could find it in the same 5 second google search to determine nationalities”)
even more niche stats! the largest submission (that isn’t a building, a cave, or public art) is 2.15 m (7 ft 1 in) x 34.14 m (112.0 ft) and weighs 4 tons! close behind it is another that's approximately 3.7m x 25.2m (12ft x 72.9ft) but weighs significantly less! i did not feel like mathing which had more square footage. the smallest submission (that is, a physical piece in real life, digital art can be insanely small) is 5.9 x 6 cm (2 5/16 x 2 3/8 in.)!
how about locations? excluding the multiple copies ones, there are 32 pieces located in the united states, 9 in spain, 8 in france, 6 in canada, 5 in england, 4 in italy, 3 each in russia, australia and mexico, 2 each in the netherlands, wales, scotland, and ireland, and 1 each in israel, finland, germany, portugal, poland, japan, austria, ecuador, thailand, latvia, singapore, belgium, and argentina! i know that doesn’t add up but there’s a lot of pieces in private collections, owned by the artist, or we just couldn’t find their location, sadly.
artist nationalities get a lot more variable! i did my best to look up every artist i could and include their birth country and the country they did their works in! except john singer sargent because he just didn’t want to settle down and i didn’t want to give him like six different countries.
starting off, we have 43 submissions by american artists! 18 by french artists, 17 by english, 8 each by canadians and italians, 6 each by russians and spaniards, 5 each by chinese, irish, and germans, 4 each by dutch, mexican and belgians, 3 by latvians, 2 each by finnish, polish, scottish, malay, serbian, and armenians, and 1 each by portuguese, japanese, austrian, ecuadorian, thai, swiss, argentine, cuban, kazhak, colombian, danish, and iranian!
i do not currently have stats for jewish artists for you, because i forgot to write it down my first time through wiki, and now i have to go through all ~140 articles and websites again. relatedly: there are 8 works by known-to-be-gay artists, but i’m already running into wikipedia going “well he sure did a lot of male nudes but he also might have had relationships with women” and i am feeling uncomfortable poking through people’s private lives so... i hope you don’t mind it i stop... counting..... i mean if they’re open about it i’ll write it down still.
how about the ages of works? there are 4 things from before the 1400s, 3 from the 1400s, 6 from the 1500s, 3 from the 1600s, and 2 from the 1700s! 5 from 1800-1850, 4 from 1850-1880, 10 from the 1880s, and 9 from the 1890s! 9 from the 1900s (that is, 1900-1909), 5 from the 1910s, 5 from the 1920s, 4 from the 1930s, 4 from the 1940s, and 6 from the 1950s! 3 from the 60s, 4 from the 70s, 7 from the 80s, 15 from the 90s, 12 from the new oughts, 17 from the 2010s, and 13 from the 2020s! and three ongoing projects!
and to wrap things up: there are 101 paintings, 12 sculptures, 17 what i’m calling installations (they’re often mixed media or unusual media, i would give examples but i feel like i would bias submissions), 6 photographs, 2 pieces of textile art, and 21 digital arts, drawings, or comics!

Augusto Nicodemo - Portrait of Jacob Philipp Hackert in His Studio, Naples - 1797
oil on canvas, height: 55.8 cm (21.9 in) Edit this at Wikidata; width: 42.1 cm (16.5 in)
Alte Nationalgalerie, institution Berlin State Museums, Germany
Jacob Philipp Hackert (15 September 1737 – 28 April 1807) was a landscape painter from Brandenburg, who did most of his work in Italy.
Hackert was born in 1737 in Prenzlau in the Margraviate of Brandenburg (now in Germany). He trained with his father Philipp (a portraitist and painter of animals) and his uncle, before going to the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin in 1758. Later he traveled to Swedish Pomerania and Stockholm, at the invitation of Adolf Friedrich von Olthof, a Swedish government official and businessman. For a time, he lived with Von Olthof and painted decorative murals at his estate.
He spent from 1765 to 1768 in Paris with the Swiss artist Balthasar Anton Dunker, where he focused on painting in gouache. He met and was inspired by Claude Joseph Vernet, who was already famous as a painter of landscapes and seascapes, and the German engraver Johann Georg Wille.
In 1768 Hackert left Paris with his brother Georg, and went to Italy, basing himself mainly in Rome and Naples, where he produced many works for Sir William Hamilton. He travelled all over Italy, gaining a reputation as a talented landscape painter. He became famous everywhere in Europe due to his works for Catherine the Great, the cycle of paintings about Battle of Chesma, and Pope Pius VI.
In 1786 he went to work for Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies in Naples. He advised on the creation of a painting restoration laboratory at the Museo di Capodimonte, suggesting the call from Rome to the court of Naples of the restorer Federico Anders and supervised the transfer of the Farnese collections from Rome to Naples. As court painter realised famous pictures of Caserta and the Royal Palace of Caserta, besides the paintings series of the Bourobon's ports. During this period he acted also as a secret informant of Russia, his contact being the Russian diplomat Andrey Razumovsky.
When Goethe visited Naples in 1786, he and Hackert became friends.
Hackert had settled in a house in Posillipo. The painters Salvatore Fergola and Salvatore Giusti (1773-1845) were among his pupils.
In 1799, when Naples was declared the Parthenopaean Republic, Hackert lost much of his royal patronage. He moved to Pisa and then Florence. He bought an estate in San Pietro di Careggi, near Florence, and he died there in 1807 and was buried in the so-called "Dutch garden" of Livorno. His remains were then moved to the actual cemetery of the Dutch-German Congregation.
He never married and lived a good part of his life with one of his brothers but he had affairs with some married women, and from one of them he probably had a daughter.
Goethe wrote the first biography of Hackert in 1811.

Which is your favorite act of each circus skill Cirque du Soleil has ever included? Favorite trapeze act, favorite silks act, dance, icarian games, miscellaneous, etc.
Sweet you menace. You knew this would both delight me and derail my day. I am powerless but to respond.
(Disclaimer that categorizing and even identifying all circus acts is both impossible and a credit to the medium itself, this is neither a comprehensive list of acts nor a comprehensive list of my favorites, etc. etc.)
Adagio/acro/hand to hand - Adagio Quatuor, Luzia
Sensual, emotional, graceful expression of conflict, perfect set, perfect song, perfect voice. Check out 3:50-4:13 for what I personally think is the best moment in the entire show. Can't explain it. It just gives me chills every time.
Aerial hoop - Cerceaux, O
There is a lot of great lyra acts in Cirque, some with markedly stronger overall choreography and difficulty level, but this song in this setting, when the brides come in... this one is unmatched.
Aerial straps - Tlaloc, Luzia
Cirque is utterly oversaturated with aerial straps acts. But this one is real magic.
(like a billion more beneath the cut)
Balance - Rola bola, Kurios
How is there no decent video on hand?? Anyway this act is a heart attack no matter how many times you see it.
Banquine - Banquine, Quidam
You already know there's no other. 1:44 if you want goosebumps. The ghost twins are handled with such tender delicacy, and yet they're both totally hollow and interchangeable. Absolutely incredible.
Bars of any kind (Russian, uneven, tournik, high, etc.) - Uneven bars, Amaluna
Very nearly tournik here, but I just love the Amazons so much and feel like this entire show was shafted so I'm sticking with it.
Bungee - Bungees, Zed
There is basically no linkable footage of this act anywhere but it wins because of the set and song. And they're galaxies!!!
Contortion - Contortion, Kurios
Wish I could find decent footage of it onstage because it looks so cool with its proper base and setting. But I just love how energetic this act is, and the skill level is nuts.
Cradle (Russian, aerial, other, etc.) - Bateau, O
Aerial cradle meets parallel bars meets sheer genius.
Dance - Dance Interlude, La Nouba
This was very nearly Dei Ex Machina from Mystere because I'm obsessed with the new Monarch bird, but. There's a chance nothing else in the world matters besides this song.
Diabolo - Diabolo, Kooza
Who's doing it higher, faster, and better than this tbh. Plus his costume is just adorable.
Fire - Fire Knife Dance, Alegria IANL
This artist in particular takes the cake. You can feel his passion and joy. A perfect match for this act and show.
Flying trapeze - Flying trapeze, Mystere
It's categorically the best flying act in the entire world. Really nothing more to it. I've trained with a few people in the act too, so it has a very special place in my heart. 1:33 for an uprise that gives me a heart attack every. fucking. time.
Handbalancing - Handbalancing on canes, Varekai
This act lends itself very beautifully to different moods. I'm particularly fond of this chilly interpretation - La Promise is so mature here, so in control of herself and her surroundings.
Interlude - Dans L'Air, Quidam
Probably guessable. I never shut up about this one. Favorite moment in all of my Cirque experience. There is nothing like those lights coming up bright and hot as the red curtains stretch out, not before not since.
Juggling - Juggling, Amaluna
Love Cali, love Viktor Kee. No one on earth moves like him.
Non-juggling manipulation - Batons, Ka
Misc. aerial - Cloud swing, Quidam
Favorite Cirque act of all time. All time ever. I don't imagine anyone is clicking through all of these but if anyone chose just one, I'd want it to be this. The women with their ropes. Boum Boum trapped beneath the net. The bassist. The fact that Cirque hasn't touched this act once since it was retired in Quidam. Everything about it is perfection.
Misc. other things that swing - Swiss rings, Volta
I'll never forget seeing this live. A real shining jewel in a show that never got to become what it could have been.
Non-juggling manipulation (hoops, batons, ribbons, etc.) - Batons, Ka
Duhhhhh 😁
Russian swing - Russian swing, O
What really makes this act are the tiny interactions between artists. Everyone has a story and a reason to celebrate. The Russian swing itself becomes almost secondary to the setting it creates. Perfect example of a successful ensemble act.
Silks - Aerial contortion in silks, Quidam
Again, are there any others? This act is simply vicious.
Static trapeze - Triple trapeze, Varekai
Again, duhhh 😁. I wanted to be one of them so badly when I was younger.
Teeterboard - Korean plank, Mystere
Kind of a cheat because it's also powertrack but come on this act rules.
Trampoline (wall, power track, etc.) - Powertrack, La Nouba
Utterly devastating in its effectiveness. I truly do not care that today's powertrack acts are a million times more complex or high in skill level. This is precision and simplicity at its finest, and every dash of characterization shows the magic crammed into every moment of La Nouba. So many modern shows have never and could never in their wildest dreams. Lose my shit at 6:50.
Unicycle - Unicycles, Drawn To Life
No real footage because Disney is the worst. I don't even like unicycles and I adored this act.
Wheel (cyr, German, crossed, etc.) - Roue cyr, Corteo
Yet again it's that act/song combo that does me in. The precision this act demands! The bizarre darkness of the entire thing! I'm just obsessed.
Wheel of death - Wheel of death, Kooza
No one else should even try tbh. Even Ka can't match the energy, and the intimacy of the big top takes this act to the absolute maximum.
Wire - Tightwire, Amaluna
I don't really care for wire acts too much but I really liked this one! I was bummed when it was removed. It lent shape to the world in a really nice way.

José Rizal, whose full name is José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda, was a Filipino nationalist, physician, and author who was born in Calamba on June 19, 1861, and died in Manila on December 30, 1896.
He is a wealthy landowner's son, received his education in Manila and at the University of Madrid. He was an outstanding medical student who quickly dedicated himself to changing Spanish colonial government in the Philippines while never supporting independence. He spent the majority of his writing time in Europe between 1882 and 1892, where he also lived.
ᴅɪᴅ ʏᴏᴜ ᴋɴᴏᴡ that Jose Rizal mastered 22 languages (only 17 are listed here): Spanish, French, Latin, Greek, German, Portuguese, Italian, English, Dutch, Japanese, Arabic, Swedish, Russian, Chinese, Greek, Hebrew and Sanskrit.

FACT CHECK!
The Rizal Monument in Luneta was not made by a Filipino Artist. Richard Kissling, a Swiss sculptor, created the plan after placing second in a 1907 art contest to select the best scale model for the future Rizal monument.
Tumblr media
Rizal was globally recognized as a ‘Renaissance man’. In addition to other things, he was an anthropologist, ethnologist, economist, sociologist, educator, playwright, writer, historian, journalist, farmer, dramatist, ophthalmologist, martial artist, and cartographer. Although, he was never really a licensed dentist. He just self-studied, pretended and claimed to be one.
FOR YOUR INFORMATION!
According to Britannica, a Renaissance man is an ideal embodied the basic tenets of Renaissance humanism. Basically, a man who is knowledgeable or proficient in a variety of fields, whether it be scientific, humanities, or philosophical fields.

Future Scheduling:
There will be no gymnastics at the 2023 European Games. Not to be confused with the European Gymnastics Championships or the European Championships. This is a multisport event which occurs every 4 years and is neither a qualifier for Worlds or the Olympics.
Legal News:
Ivan Kuliak’s appeal of his suspension was partially upheld by the Gymnastics Ethics Foundation review panel. Originally it was ruled that his suspension could be extended by 6 months if the Russian ban extended beyond the 1 year of his initial ban. The review panel found that it was improper to link the two events and that his punishment should be independent of any action taken against the Russian Federation. His ban will now end on May 16, 2023. President Valérie Horyna, who is Swiss, Jane Bickerstaff from Britain and Mexican Edgardo Muñoz Lopez comprised the GEF Appeal Tribunal panel.
Adam AhQuin was removed as volunteer assistant coach at Southern Utah University after he was arrested on domestic and child abuse charges. A safe sport investigation has also started.
Camp Woodward in Pennsylvania faces a second allegation of sexual misconduct by staff.
Historical Research:
Uncle Tim at Gymnastics History has uncovered that there were discussions about removing men’s vault in 1969 as well as a previously unknown medal for Larisa Latynina (USR)
Upcoming this week:
The Paris World Challenge Cup (a FIG Group 3 MAG/WAG apparatus competition) will occur on September 24th and 25. Qualification on the 24th is not expected to be streamed, and the finals on the 25th are expected to be streamed on Sport en France without need of a vpn.

deepdive hc: post 1928 (stefan ivanov)
stefan begins writing his journal sometime before gleb leaves for paris to bring anya back and ends the journal shortly after the birth of his last child (his only daughter)
he travels from russia to france and then makes his way wandering across europe taking in the sights because he knows that's what his sister would've loved to do before he meets and falls in love with an adventurous blonde in budapest who reminds him there is a difference between traveling and running from his past.
they travel together and marry in crete before settling down in paris amongst other russian immigrants searching for a better life. by this time they've already had two sons (born in 1930 & 1931) and later another surprise and final child in 1934, a daughter, whom he names after his late sister. elizaveta.
its a five years after elizaveta's birth that stefan brushes into a blast from the past in paris. his uncle aleksander, whom he only met briefly once in russia shortly before his sister's execution. aleksander is relieved to see stefan well and thriving and asks after liesel to which stefan has to break the news to him of what happened to her. both men stay up the entire night exchanging stories and tears about her though aleksander's grief is somewhat lifted in meeting little elizaveta, who takes after her namesake very much.
before aleksander leaves he gives stefan the same suitcase he had left with in russia. he tells stefan that its best that he hold onto it now and to use what was inside to care for his family. it belonged in a past and another life he didn't know anymore and that liesel would've wanted them left to him. when aleksander leaves does stefan finally see what was in the suitcase all those years he finds the romanovs jewels and other jewelry with a written note signed by the late tsar as proof that the jewels were a means of payment for aleksander's service as a guard to his children.
aleksander ivanov is never seen again after that.
stefan puts away the suitcase in the far back of his closet and never touches the case till the start of world war 2 when he and his family fled to london at 43 years old. the family makes it through the war and officially settle in as british citizens thanks to stefan's service as an officer in british forces. stefan's oldest, alik, enlists in the army as well when he comes of age and marries very young, having two children of his own, maxim (1953) & diana (1955).
stefan never opens the suitcase again till shortly before his 80th birthday in 1977. by now he has witnessed the very recent births of his great grandchildren who were named after his father and uncle, aleksander and andrei. he leaves the suitcase to his granddaughter diana (who was 22 years old).
in 1980 stefan ivanov passes away at home at the age of 83 and was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years and outlives all of his children except elizaveta, who passes away a few months after him.
during all of his lifetime stefan never speaks of his life before meeting his wife in budapest and only references to it in speaking about his sister, liesel, to which the family doesn't ask much about because they didn't want to upset him and thus the family origins remained enshrouded in mystery.
diana puts away the jewels, which was left to her in secret and sworn to secrecy by her grandfather, in a swiss bank vault to be forgotten about. diana travels the world and lives as vicariously as her grandparents had for the first few years of their marriage as she meets shahs, explores jungles and flies airplanes while also doing humanitarian aid worldwide.
diana dotes on her brother's (maxim) son's before her brother passes away in their youth and takes a more active role in helping her sister-in-law raise them before she too passes away shortly after as well. diana finishes raising the boys who take after their parents. andrei, with his artistic nature and warm heart like his mother and aleksander, like his father who joins the british army and serves for many decades till he decides to retire from military life.
in a funny parallel andrei takes off for a european world tour and meets his future wife gabriele who he quickly settles down with and a few years later has a daughter whom they name elisabeth after his late great great aunt and after gabriele's grandmother. but most know her simply by liesel.
unknownst to andrei but the fling he had before meeting his future wife would result in a son who, in a twist of fate, is named stefan by his mother who had named him after a fairytale prince.

3, 27, 31, 36, 40 <33 omg these questions are all so interesting i had a hard time choosing haha
Thank you kata! It's so hard to choose, there's so many fun questions
3: definitely listen to more oldies, but not in a way where I never listen to anything new
27: I love making playlists I make so many, I'll chuck some of my favourites at the end
31: favourite fictional band/ artist would be hedwig and the angry inch from the musical
36: favourite song in 2 or more languages anything by gogol bordello but that's kind of cheating because it's mostly in English with a few Russian lines, my favourite being through the roof n underground
40: I have sadly not been to many concerts on account of no one ever comes to my part of nz but I did go see the proclaimers with my mum years ago, for a laugh, and that was really fun, though I was the youngest person there by decades

Pressing LUNGS by remote--OLAF of Munich Human Research.
re covert destruction program by remote over UK till 20 80--Someone is pressing my lungs /by remote'/ from lab st barths human Research- this compresses the grey matter in your lungs tighter and makes breathing even more difficult besides being horrendously painful, called sport by lab members, ofcourse as a refugee from one years old, I had TB etc Sadism rather than any form of skill or knowledge is the key to being a mental assistant. They love inflicting extra pain-- said former bossess Anna who got her job with sex, she was a sex worker of Peckham alias Jean Clark, prison sentence, thrown out of Hospital for Tropical Medicines : Fekete's life has been so hard she won't even notice -- OH But I DO..and the pain is horrendous-/lab st barths human Research- quote just now, I pushed two of the break-ins and thefts at your house. It's getting very difficult as the old teacher has very little left now worth the time and bother of robbing, by John Turnbull's friend he calls himself, dare not give his name though watched at the lab?? JT drags anyone and everyone into t he lab. so they are guilty and cannot complain when the time comes, that was Anna's method too \quote ''Jean Carsted was my whore so I am permitted..''/ All and everything they do is pain-inflicting at that lab. - trying to say we are voluntary patients- never a patient and not voluntary -
Human Research runs only on lies, which they call ISSUES.. never been to the place-re covert destruction program by remote over UK till 2080 - now running extinction program from it.
The lab St barths human Research killed an art woman lecturer at the Psalter Lane Art College Sheffield with this technique. They pressed her lungs so hard they collapsed and she died. Also my own lecturer, they put this mind thing into victim's thoughts and then they kill themselves- a friend on A levels was also used for this technique, hung himself and others---used fairly regularly. The Lecturer tidied his desk on the day of the results and put a gun to his brain and shot his brains out. I should have guessed it was coming as he let me see his art, black boxes, endless black boxes. As a sensitive artist, he was expressing his thoughts in his art. All UK is on this program paid for by Kissinger for the future of USA.
pss evidently someone called OLAF /??/ friend of Helga.. they are all shown the film made at BBC by Joanna of lab porn artist with my head supplanted on it /New York Hum Res advised St barths HumRes/ and then imagine they will find something not little tiny kiddy patients used horrendously- Joanna, porn model, 'quote You are getting greedy Joanna'.. has long been asphyxiated in 'THE ROOM' at the lab where all are sent once they are no longer of any use- now closed-- /?/ of Munich Human Research..''excellent I've got your looted work to copy. '' Someone saw you in the classroom at East Ham College, /they used sound threatening /none stop there and at Langdon School London, but the lab put on endless diarrhea for simulated cancers, which is another technique they us a lot, people think they have it when they haven't, it is simulated from the lab. st barths human Research.......Allan Lieberman Cross of Finchley, 86 illeg children and former Insurance Salesman, killed my dad with that one and they also had his very strong heart taken out- /put actual heartbeat on for me to hear when I visited him/ let him have an artificial one, as he was in a german prison.. so they could watch him die from it...unfortunately, my parents come from the East and TRUST doctors and the English implicitly ...... to ensure I didn't get the PGCE..Russian and German from Institute of Education..
Jorg Feldman from Basel Switzerland is coming back./ugh from Basel?? madman just so he can have it off with tots/ Lab created a fatal accident on one of the Swiss mountain..
LAURA of Hereward St Sheffield fortyish, not a known thief, but stole some dozen things from my home..some get away with it repeatedly, broke into my home looting, twice...

A visitor to the Tokyo Palace in Paris has damaged a painting by Swiss artist Miriam Cahn. The artwork depicts the sexual violence of Russian soldiers in Ukraine. The incident occurred during the exhibition "Fuck Abstraction!". Cahn's painting features a faceless figure raping a victim with their hands tied behind their back. Some visitors were outraged, claiming that the painting depicted the forced oral sex of a child, but both the artist and the museum denied these accusations. The French State Council confirmed that the painting does not depict pedophilia and is an example of freedom of expression. The artist has repeatedly stated that the painting aims to draw attention to the war crimes committed by Russia. This work is her response to the discovery of mass graves in Bucha and numerous reports of rapes committed by Russian soldiers during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. May 8, 2023 On May 7th, an elderly man splashed purple paint on a painting, and was subsequently arrested by the police. The Tokyo Palace will file a complaint for property damage and obstruction of freedom of speech. French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the act of vandalism against the artwork, saying, "On May 8th, as we celebrate the victory of freedom, I condemn the act of vandalism committed yesterday at the Tokyo Palace. An attack on a work of art is an attack on our values. In France, art is always free, and respect for cultural creativity is guaranteed."

Robert Frank
Ella Caridi
Robert Frank is most known for his photography book "The Americas" This book is known and shown for de-romanticizing segregated America by portraying racism in small middle-American towns, at settings like beaches and diners. "For example, Photographs such as Chicago, 1956 in The Americans revealed Frank's mature style, characterized by bold composition and ironic, sometimes bitter, social commentary. Their publication established Frank as a major creative photographer, and the book was widely hailed as a classic." In his book "Come Again," the photos that drew me into Frank's photographs are showing destroyed buildings in Beirut, a city in Lebanon; what captured my attention was how Frank displayed the photos, how they were placed in the notebook, the material used to display the photos, and the way the photographs were taken, in addition to how Frank took photos of abandoned and destroyed buildings. The city was used as a battleground during the Lebanon War from 1975 - 1990. "Much of the work he did there, together with that of five other photographers with whom he shared the assignment, was put together in Beirut City Centre by Editions du Cypres in 1992." With his assigned work, he used a Polaroid to capture the city and what was left behind. He then stored the photographs away. "It was only many years later that he
Considered those images again and used them to create a sketchbook's worth of Polaroid collages. Come Again is a facsimile reprint of that notebook.” For Franks's most famous book, The Americas, the equipment he used was a “Leica 3, manufactured in 1934. It is fitted unusually with a 50mm f/1.4 Nikkor s o lens” Frank’s inspiration came from the artist Henri Cartier-Bresson. “He also touches on how the equipment wasn’t as important as creating your unique work. Frank says: “To do good work, you need further intelligence. And you can’t just imitate a famous 35mm photographer. Cartier-Bresson won’t help; wide-angle lenses won’t help either.” He has come to break the stereotype that all photographers need professional equipment to shoot show-stopping photos; for Frank, the equipment is not the most important. You get the photos out of them and how well a photographer knows their equipment. Frank's Photographic style and technique came from when he was a young photographer; he shot mostly with a medium-format square-format Rolleiflex camera. However, Alexey Brodovitch, a Russian-born photographer, designer, and instructor, suggested he ditch the Rolleiflex for a 35mm Leica. Brodovitch suggested that the Leica could create more fluid, immediate images, whereas the Rolleiflex was much slower and bulkier. Furthermore, Brodovitch encouraged Frank to “unlearn his Swiss methodological habits and taught him to take risks.” You can see that Frank took up Brodovitch’s
advice by leaving his comfortable home of Switzerland to pursue photography in NYC.” This mentorship from Brodovitch had a strong influence on the young Robert Frank. From his work leading up to “The Americans,” he did very much that. He would often shoot at night using imprecise focus, incorporating blur into his work, and would use grainy film. Not only that, but Frank experimented with printing his photographs with extreme contrast (disregarding the need to create an image with good tonal range), printing in extreme shapes (trapezoids), and would crop. Frank was a commissioned photographer “but left feeling frustrated artistically in that role” He shot photographs on the street with his 35 mm film camera. He shot “Highways of America, where he honed his highly influential style of wandering, observational photography.”
Frank's working method is shown by what he learned from Walker Evans Frank learned much of his photographic style while working with Evans during the making of "The Americans." He learned to be patient and take a simple, straightforward, and final approach to his compositions while photographing tools for Fortune alongside Evans. “Although Frank discovered the importance of being patient in his working methods, he was also more intuitive and photographed quite swiftly.” Before Frank started his production on The Americans, he photographed ” cowboys at Madison square garden or socialites at the toy ball; he had made many exposures of the people and the scenes that interested him, no doubt hoping that an editor would find one of use.” For his process for this project, “he took one, two, or three exposures, and then moved on, for he recognized, “First thought, best thought…When one releases a second time, a moment is already lost.” Over time when Frank worked on “The Americans,” his working style evolved into being much more graceful and casual. “Looking in” elaborates on this point.
“In the coming months, as he gained more confidence in his new approach and worked himself into what he later referred to as a “State of grace,” Frank’s style became looser, more casual, even gestural, and all about movement. Frank said that to “symbolize the alternatives of hope and despair to which mankind is forever subjected..” As shown through this work, Frank’s color platelet is black and white “He is neither highlighted with exhilaration nor shadowed with depression, but both are in his personality, as they are in his photographs.” This technique can be seen in his work in “The Americas” and “Come Again,” produced at two different times in his career. Still, the color pallet, shadows, and highlights come to life when a viewer looks at these images. They can see the seamless skill that is applied to them.
