C. L. Peck Contractor (Photo taken by me on May 11, 2022)
C. L. Peck Contractor was started by Clair L. Peck Sr. in 1915 or 1918 in Los Angeles, CA. He was born in Michigan City, Indiana on May 5, 1881, the son of a lumberman. He went to Purdue University and, while there, competed in track and basketball at the same time as finishing his four-year engineering degree in three years. The firm "became known for erecting office buildings, classical church structures, warehouses and corporate headquarters" (LA Times). The Los Angeles Business Journal said the firm "specialized in creating fireproof buildings." "He was considered an expert in reinforced concrete almost from the beginning of its use in construction and was noted for his craftsmanship" (NY Times). His full name is Clair Leverett Peck. He was born in 1881 and died in 1971. He was married to Viola Curtis Peck. The LA Times described him as "the contractor who literally built much of Southern California, from the Capitol Records Building to the Bonaventure Hotel... to the Crystal Cathedral and the Orange County Performing Arts Center." The company constructed more than 1,200 buildings in Los Angeles, including 40 buildings along Wilshire Boulevard. Some other buildings include: the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, "the Forum in Inglewood, high-rises in Century City and most of the chapels and other buildings at the Forest Lawn parks." According to The New York Times, "Saks Fifth Avenue had Mr. Peck build its first Los Angeles area store, in Beverly Hills, with no written contract." He died April 23, 1971 at the age of 89 at Good Samaritan Hospital and is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, CA.
Tumblr media
Peck was the Peck of Leonardt & Peck! I think my Leonardt post might be the longest ever, but this one is pretty close! His bookkeeper was named Meda Green and she lived on Hartford Avenue (Westlake). Weirdly in the same 1927 city directory, Peck is president of C L inc at 354 S Spring (Downtown) and vice president of another General Contractors firm of unclear name (with A S Bent as president, whom I've written about before) at 257 S Spring room 430. Finally, in the same directory, Beverly Hills Realty Board is in the "C L Peck bldg" in Beverly Hills (???!).
He had two sons, who both worked in his company: Edwin and Clair Leverett Peck, Jnr., who was born on November 18, 1920. Jnr went to Los Angeles High School. He was married to Emily Lutz and then Margo Ryan (according to a contributor to Find A Grave, he had another wife named Linda Hussey and three step-children through her). He had three children from his first marriage to Emily Lutz of Brentwood (assuming the Los Angeles neighborhood): Clair L. "Peter" Peck III, Nancy Peck Birdwell, and Suzanne Peck. He also had a sister named Sally Peck Carson and seven grandchildren. He had an engineering degree from Stanford and served in the U.S. Navy in World War II before joining his father's company in 1945. He expanded the business's work "erecting major department stores for Nieman Marcus, Robinsons-May, Broadway and Bullock's, the Sherman Oaks Galleria, Fashion Island in Newport Beach and much of the original South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa. He worked with some luminary architects as "John Portman on the Bonaventure Hotel, Philip Johnson on the Crystal Cathedral, Charles Luckman on the Forum, I.M. Pei on the Creative Artists Agency in Beverly Hills, and Bill Pereira on the Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Building in Newport Beach."
Tumblr media
The Byron Jackson plant in Santa Ana, CA was designed by John Kewell & Associates and constructed by C. L. Peck (see source below).
Tumblr media
In this photo, Melba Rardin and L. A. Claypool survey the excavation for an addition to St. Joseph Hospital in Burbank, CA in 1961. C. L. Peck was the contractor for the creation of "a new six-story-and-basement wing for the hospital" for $5.5M USD which was planned to add 256 patient beds and other facilities. Claypool was the "clerk of works" for Peck.
Tumblr media
In 1976, Peck was "elected to the board of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, and, as chairman of its building committee, oversaw construction of the bank's new building at 101 Market St." The firm also built the Hibernia Bank building in San Francisco. He also served on the boards of the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens, Investment Company of America, Farmers Insurance, Northrop Corporation, Los Angeles Children's Hospital, and Metropolitan YMCA. Additionally, he had been president of San Francisco's Bohemian Club, Los Angeles's California Club, and the Los Angeles Country Club. "In 1985 he was the recipient of the Y.M.C.A. Dr. Martin Luther King Human Dignity Award."
As of 1981, C. L. Peck Construction Inc. was located at 626 Wilshire Blvd., Ste. 925 in downtown Los Angeles, CA. They had a General Building Contractor license from the California Contractors State License Board from February 27, 1981 through February 28, 1997. Weirdly they were exempt from Workers Compensation Insurance? Victor Herbert Siegel was the Responsible Managing Officer, John Lee Willis was CEO/President until September 26, 1983, Paul John Matt was the Responsible Managing Employee from May 7, 1991 until July 15, 1991, Allen Marvin Katz was RMO/CEO/President until only November 16, 1983, Louis M Stafford was RMO/CEO/President from then until April 7, 1987, and William Alan Worthington was "Officer" until February 15, 1983.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In 1986, C. L. Peck Contractor (the 53rd-largest construction company in the USA in 1986 and one of five largest contractors in California by the time of his death) and Jones Bros. Construction Corp. agreed to merge. By then they had "dominated the heavy construction business in Southern California for more than half a century." Apparently the reasoning behind their merger was the increased competition from overseas and out-of-state companies. The plan was to become Peck/Jones and have their headquarters on Wilshire Blvd. in the Westwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. C. L. Peck, Jr. would be the chairman, with Jerve M. Jones the chief executive. According to the Los Angeles Times, "the Peck and Jones families will continue to be the sole stockholders of the merged concern, which is estimated to have annual revenue of about $400 million and a work force of about 500."
He died on December 14, 1998 at 78 years old at the UCLA Medical Center from a massive stroke. He is burried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, CA.
According to Open Corporates, C. L. Peck Construction Inc.'s registered address was 122 S. Westgate Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90049 and there was a filing in 1999 of a Certificate of Dissolution. In January of 2021, Suzanne Peck was added as CEO and then, in July of 2022, there was a change of status from Dissolved to Terminated.
In 2005, Peck/Jones had "been forced into bankruptcy proceedings by its creditors" in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Los Angeles "by one of its clients and two subcontractors who claim they are owed nearly $400,000." In another bankruptcy filing at the "U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of California, Redlands Community Hospital and other companies said they were also owed significant amounts of money.
It's unclear if Jones Construction Management is the current name of that firm or if the Jones Brothers' descendant, Eric Jones, is just using their legacy for the company he founded in 2008. According to him, the Jones Brothers acquired C. L. Peck Contractors rather than it being a merger (www.jonescm.com).

CANTLON: CAVANAUGH PREPARES UCONN FOR BC
Tumblr media
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings STORRS, CT - The red-hot UCONN Huskies come off a big, convincing win over Merrimack on Tuesday night and head on Friday night to Chestnut Hill at Kelley Rink to take on Boston College. While the BC tiger may have lost a fang and doesn’t have lots of bite at the moment after being defeated in its Beanpot game, Cavanaugh was giving nothing away and has nothing but respect for his former coach, Hockey Hall-of-Famer, Jerry York. “We played a pretty complete game against Merrimack on Tuesday night, but that’s not gonna help us tomorrow night against the Eagles,” Cavanaugh whose squad owns a five-game road winning streak and has won five of their last six contests, said. “I was very impressed with them in the Beanpot on Monday night. I thought they deserved better in that game. They controlled a lot of it, but they ran into a hot goalie. They’re really, really skilled up-front with Nesterenko, Cruz, Ambrosio, and Giles. Giles is having a breakout year. It’s gonna be quite the challenge for us.” BC fell to fourth place because Boston University won 4-1 over Providence College on the strength of two Jay O’Brien power play goals on the road at Schneider Arena. SENIOR LEADERS UCONN’s resurgence and elevation in the standings is a result of the strength of its senior leadership. “We have some great seniors, including three grad transfers. That’s ten alone with those players. The upperclassmen have provided stability and experience to the team and have played a lot of hockey in February. They know what it takes to win. The credit goes to them.” The team's big guns are Jachym Kondelik, Jonny Evans, Vladislav Firstov, and Ryan Tverberg. They have led the charge scoring big goals. “We have scored six goals in each of the last two games and nobody has had more than two. That shows we have a lot of depth on this team. That means more to me than a couple of guys carrying the team. When you're getting contributions up-and-down your line up, that usually means your team is in-sync and playing well.” KONDELIK Kondelik’s metamorphosis from his first days being recruited from Muskegon (USHL) to winning that battle over BU, to being drafted by the Nashville Predators (NHL) to wearing the "C" has been something. “Assistant coach Joe Peirara said, 'I want you to take a look at this kid.' I was in Pittsburgh (at a USHL Showcase tournament). He was intriguing, big at the time. I remember (former NHL’er) Brian Boyle when I recruited him (at BC). There wasn’t a lot of action there (yet). So much is expected of bigger guys. I liked his skill set and it came down to us and BU. He really liked his visit here and we had Tomas Vomacka (now playing with Nashville’s system) committed here, so it was good to have another Czech kid he felt comfortable with him. "Watching him grow has been fantastic. He’s not only blossomed into not only a good college hockey player, but he has also grown into a high-end (player) who can play in the National Hockey League.” He has certainly improved his skating to be considered for an NHL deal from Nashville. In discussing the putting together of his top line of Kondelik, Firstov, and Yale transfer Kevin O’Neil, Cavanaugh was willing to be a bit self-deprecating about it. “Luck!” he said with a droll laugh. “I’d like to say it was strategic, but Kondelik and Firstov have played together in the past. They all bring a different element to the line. "Kevin’s a realty player, as in he competes (for the pucks). Vlad is a super high-end skill guy as you saw the other night with his highlight-reel goal against Merrimack. They all really compliment each other well. They have skill. They compete well, and play great defense. They don’t cheat on defense and that creates a lot of offense.” Cavanaugh’s lineup is healthy and he once again deferred to wait until after practice to name his starting goalie, which, except for one game, has been Darion Hanson. ‘Real Housewives of New Jersey’ Diva Teresa Giudice Cuts Price of NJ Mansion
Bruce Glikas/Getty Images
It’s more real estate drama for the quick-tempered star of “Real Housewives of New Jersey,” Teresa Giudice. She’s slashed the price of her mansion in Montville, NJ, to try to entice a buyer.
The longtime cast member initially placed her posh property on the market last fall for $2.5 million. It’s now back on the market for a little under $2.25 million.

She and her former husband, Joe Giudice, purchased the property in 2002 for $530,000 and then proceeded to build their dream home together. Their lavish showpiece was completed in 2008.
The spread measures 10,000 square feet, with six bedrooms and 5.5 bathrooms. As reality TV fans know, the star’s swanky spot often served as a backdrop for the popular show.
The couple also spent time away from the home when they pleaded guilty to multiple federal fraud charges in March 2014. Teresa spent 11 months behind bars. Joe served his prison sentence after Teresa, and got out of jail in March 2019. But because Joe wasn’t an American citizen, he was deported to Italy after serving his time.
Now that the couple have split up, they’re looking forward to moving on from this home with so much history.
For potential buyers who want to know what it’s like to live there, look no farther than Giudice’s Instagram account, which showcases the social media influencer’s life at home. She often gives shout-outs to products she’s promoting in the kitchen.
She also recently posted shots of her home’s holiday decor.

Set on 3.7 acres, the stone and stucco build opens to an opulent entry, with black marble floors, a Cinderella staircase, and glitzy chandelier.
Giudice is also a bestselling author of cookbooks, and the main level includes her infamous chef’s kitchen with its center island, the site of many dishy scenes with the “Housewives.” It’s the perfect place to spill the tea, and includes stainless-steel appliances and a butler’s pantry.

In addition, the layout includes a formal dining room, family room, wine cellar, and two-story great room with a wood-burning fireplace.
Upstairs are two bedroom suites, two more bedrooms, an office, and a family room.
The sprawling master suite boasts a detailed vaulted ceiling design, a fireplace, dressing area, three walk-in closets, and a master bathroom with onyx tiles.
Outside, the grounds include a covered patio, a pool that was newly built in 2019, and a landscaped backyard.
So, will the price cut clinch a sale? Perhaps the saga of this home continues into the upcoming season of the show. Stay tuned.
Joshua Baris with Coldwell Banker Realty-Fort Lee Office holds the listing.

Firmly Rooted: Why LeadingRE’s Family Firms Continue to Thrive
Editor’s Note: This is the cover story in the April 2020 issue of RISMedia’s Real Estate magazine. Subscribe today.
While much of the narrative surrounding the real estate landscape today is dominated by tech start-ups and corporate- or venture-funded companies, this industry’s roots were planted by entrepreneurs—those who started out with a couple of agents, a meager office and a big dream for their family.
Many of those fledgling founders turned their humble beginnings into powerful, independent family firms, then exponentially expanded their reach and potential by joining the Leading Real Estate Companies of the World® (LeadingRE) network.
“The list of LeadingRE family companies is long,” explains LeadingRE President and CEO Paul Boomsma. “Real Estate One, Baird & Warner, John L. Scott Real Estate, Watson Realty Corp., The Keyes Company, Shorewest REALTORS®, Sibcy Cline REALTORS®…and many more. We are inspired by how these one-time ‘start-ups’ continue to innovate, adapt and thrive, and we are honored to be a part of their story.”
According to Boomsma, multi-generational firms are often uniquely positioned to withstand the changeable nature of the real estate business. “The cyclical nature of our industry attracts new people and new models when times are good—and often loses them when the market turns,” he explains. “Companies with staying power are equipped to succeed in all types of markets. Often, these companies are family firms—strengthened by their deep roots in the community and the historical perspective to respond to the inevitable shifts in the market.”
So much more than a succession plan, bringing family into the fold has provided these firms with a rare continuity of leadership and culture, an environment of trust, and a built-in ability to remain relevant as younger generations take the helm.
It’s a rare formula that’s more valuable than ever before.
The Family Path Many family firms didn’t start out with a concrete strategy for building a legacy, but rather, let nature take its course.
In 1976, Saeed Nourmand founded Nourmand & Associates in Beverly Hills. Today, the company is run by his son, President Michael Nourmand. “My parents were optimistic that Nourmand & Associates would become a long-standing, family-run business, but there was never any pressure for me or my siblings to take over the business,” he explains. “I went to USC’s Marshall School of Business and had paid close attention to the business over the years, so I ran with it and never looked back.”
Proud Parents: Nourmand & Associates President Michael Nourmand with his mother, Myra Nourmand, and his father, company founder Saeed Nourmand.
As Hoby Hanna, president of the three-generation regional powerhouse Howard Hanna Real Estate Services (ranked fifth in transactions, according to RISMedia’s 2020 Power Broker Report), explains, “Family-owned and -operated businesses are often started to support one family, and from that, many families can flourish and can continue to grow.”
Howard Hanna Jr., who celebrated his 100th birthday in February, used a modest dividend check to found the firm in Pittsburgh in 1957.
“He’s not surprised that we’ve remained family-owned and -operated,” adds Hanna.
The three generations of the Hanna family continue to expand throughout Howard Hanna Real Estate Services.
Some founders were intentional about creating a business that would live on through the generations to come, like Bill Raveis, who launched William Raveis Real Estate in an office over a grocery store in Fairfield, Conn., 46 years ago. When the opportunity to sell the company arose decades later, Raveis approached his sons to gauge their interest.
“We both felt strongly that we wanted to carry on the family legacy,” says Ryan Raveis, co-president of William Raveis Inc., who joined the firm, along with his brother, Chris, in the early 2000s. “We were given a few conditions, however: We weren’t going to sell the company and we needed to triple the size of it to make it worthwhile for all of us. He also told us we couldn’t work at the company until we had outside professional experiences.”

Similarly, at Long Island, N.Y.’s Coach REALTORS®, the strategy was thoughtfully developed.
“Our parents (Lawrence and Georgianna Finn, who founded the firm in 1954) wanted our taking over the business to be our decision, not just theirs,” explains Broker/Owner Whitney Finn LaCosta, who has stepped into a leadership and ownership role, along with her brother LP Finn and her husband, Robert LaCosta. “They felt it was essential that we pursued our personal education and experienced some degree of career success outside the real estate industry. They worked on the plan for succession and willingly stepped away to help us gain the knowledge, skills, confidence and respect we needed to take on these roles.”

The Advantages of a Family Culture Running the business as a family affair has enabled many multi-generational firms to create and sustain an invaluable culture, one that gives them a unique advantage in the market, and positively impacts their bottom lines.
Fazendin REALTORS® in Minnetonka, Minn., for example, was founded by Roger Fazendin in 1965.
“We emphasize a culture that supports creativity, collaboration, accountability and mutual respect,” says Broker/Owner R. Andy Fazendin, Roger Fazendin’s grandson, who assumed the role when his father, Dan Fazendin, retired. “I believe our family-owned character builds trust and confidence in agents and consumers.”

A family culture has also been key to the success of Premier Realty Group in Stuart, Fla. The firm was founded in 1958 by Trude Kennedy Neese and is today run by her granddaughter, Broker/Owner Jessica D. Bohner.
“Family is at the heart of our culture and our client experience, which has always been a competitive advantage for us,” says Bohner. “Our agents and staff tout the familial environment as a significant reason they choose to work at Premier. Clients are treated like family, allowing us to help them achieve their dreams by experiencing more moments of vulnerability and openness throughout the process.”
Carrying On the Family Tradition: Premier Realty Group Broker/Owner Jessica D. Bohner with her father and predecessor, the late Steve Bohner
Ryan Raveis agrees. “Though William Raveis has grown exponentially (the eighth-largest firm in the U.S. by sales volume, according to RISMedia’s 2020 Power Broker Report), our company’s strong ethos, rooted in family values, has never wavered,” he explains. “We believe that lasting relationships come from care, courtesy and commitment to our agents, their clients and the community.”
For Hanna, agents and clients are members of the Hannas’ extended family…and they know it. “We are 100 percent in it with them,” he says. “People can feel that level of support and care in every home we sell. We think this means something in this day and age. We are open, interested and accessible…and we listen to what consumers—and agents—want.”
LaCosta concurs and emphasizes the ability to expedite decision-making. “Being a family-run organization, a business with the face and voice of the owners, gives everyone access to each other,” she explains. “Agents’ access to owners gives them a feeling of worth, a seat at the table, and the knowledge that they can ask for help and give input.”
Raveis echoes that sentiment. “Our leadership team is approachable and makes decisions quickly, which sets us apart from large corporate real estate companies with shareholders and multiple layers of decision-making.”
Community Connections Like No Other Being a family business also provides these firms with unparalleled ties to the communities they serve.
“In our market, there is always a new flavor of the week, yet very few companies stand the test of time,” says Nourmand. “In LA, we are the longest-running independent boutique of our size. My experience has been that people prefer to work with local, family businesses. We’ve been involved in charities, local communities and schools for decades. We do it because we want to make a difference, but it has definitely helped us grow.”
“One of our greatest advantages is that we have long-established roots in local communities and, therefore, more inherent trust than our more recently arrived competition,” agrees Fazendin. “We compete against mostly large franchises that are less interested in community involvement and reinvestment.”
Raveis agrees. “We think of our company as more than just a real estate, mortgage and insurance company: It is a foundation to serve our communities,” he explains. “We have an underlying commitment to care that is often lacking in this cutthroat real estate environment—and that drives everything we do.”
Bohner values the level of trust the firm has built. “Our roots run deep in the communities we serve,” she explains. “We are passionate about being involved and giving back through time, treasure and talent.”
And for the Hannas, community ties grow ever deeper as the firm’s generational presence expands. “Our grandmother instilled the importance of being part of the community and giving back at a very young age,” explains Hanna. “This is authentic and part of who we are. We can only hope this realness gives us the edge.”
A Continuum of Innovation While some may perceive a family business as dated or behind the curve, the exact opposite is usually the case.
As Hanna says, “Family business doesn’t have to mean old business. Our family leadership team of owner operators spans from 100 years old to 29. This gives us an unparalleled multi-generational advantage. Each generation has been driven to innovate.”
LaCosta agrees: Being a multi-generational firm paves the way for ongoing innovation. “Having the second generation—a younger generation—has kept the leadership in step with the next generation of customers, clients and leaders,” she explains. “We understand that change is essential to longevity.”
“As my father likes to say, ‘If you don’t innovate, you’re dead,'” says Raveis. “We constantly invest in new resources and services for our agents, like state-of-the-art technology, tools and marketing. We also provide top-tier coaching and training to offer fresh perspectives and new opportunities for success.”
At Fazendin, staying involved in local, state and national real estate organizations, like LeadingRE and MLSs, has helped the firm keep up with change. “This has given us a glimpse of upcoming trends and has helped us develop productive relationships with other brokers,” says Fazendin.
Independently Healthy Remaining independent is something family firms take seriously. That’s why being part of LeadingRE’s network of 565 independent firms in 70-plus countries around the world is a cornerstone of their ongoing success.
As Boomsma says, “Independence is the very essence of our organization. Whether a company is in its fourth generation of family leadership or its second, that spirit of independence is deeply woven into the company culture. Through LeadingRE, these firms align with like-minded companies and extend what they have achieved at the local level on a national and global scale.”
For LaCosta, the value of independence boils down to two things: the ability to control your own destiny, and not being held back by outside decision-makers.
“By staying independent, we have the ability to differentiate ourselves in our marketplace,” she explains, “and our affiliation with world-class brokerage networks, such as LeadingRE, provides our agents with real advantages over other brokerages.”
Independence allows Nourmand to focus on what’s best for agents without having to answer to a higher power. “We can create our marketing without having to follow a franchise’s marketing rules, and we can spend money on things that matter to us,” he says. “LeadingRE provides national and international marketing, referral business and vital information that helps us succeed.”
Independence also allows for maximum flexibility. “We have chosen to remain an independent, family-owned and -run firm so we can stay agile and nimble, constantly innovate and deliver superior service,” explains Raveis. “With LeadingRE’s Luxury Portfolio International®, our listings are broadcast to the best brokers and the most affluent buyers around the world.”
Bohner agrees. “In a world of consolidation of brands, and the ease of use of the internet, we believe having a strong, independent brand powered by LeadingRE provides us the best of options,” she explains. “We are able to make decisions quickly without layers of red tape so we can remain relevant with ease.”
For independent, family-run firms, LeadingRE can also serve as an important, objective sounding board. “We are a family who can get in the weeds of a topic or model,” says Hanna. “Our relationships inside LeadingRE can act like an independent board and incubator for ideas and innovation.”
“The connections made through LeadingRE have provided expanded reach and expedited decision-making, as the caliber and openness of the group is unparalleled in our industry,” adds Bohner.
For Fazendin, there are countless reasons for remaining independent. “Being able to make one’s own decisions is at the top of the list. Perpetuating a brand we believe in is another. Having the freedom to take risks and reap the rewards while not paying franchise fees is something we appreciate as well,” he says. “LeadingRE is supportive of the independent broker by providing data, information and opportunities for collaboration with other brokers.”
Strong Roots Nurture Sustained Growth As new business models and technology investments continue to change the dynamics of the real estate industry, these family firms explain that they’re better equipped than most to compete.
“Our biggest concern now is the erosion of the retained company dollar and the competition from business models that are funded by outside capital and can remain unprofitable,” says LaCosta. “Our advantage is our ability to be nimble and move with flexibility.”
According to Hanna, family-run businesses like his offer the support necessary in the highly emotional home-buying or -selling process—something a tech model cannot do. “We believe this will always be a people business and that the majority of the world wants to hire a person to market their home,” he says. “We don’t think any tech can take the place of the real estate agent. Rather, we use technology to support the people at Howard Hanna.”
Fazendin says that, for many, the appreciation of a family-run business has grown in the midst of the often impersonal tech environment. “Currently, there is a lot of ‘noise’ in the real estate industry,” he explains. “Some of this noise is legitimate, much of it is a distraction. Keeping up can be challenging for sure, but it is also exciting and pushes me to become a better broker.”
Raveis agrees, adding that, ultimately, due to technology’s prevalence, real estate firms can’t compete on tech. “The differentiator in this business will be service,” he says. “Our values are etched in the culture of the company with long-term employees who care deeply about their jobs and the customers they serve. We also aren’t concerned with short-term share price or value, and can focus 100 percent on the needs of our customers. As a multi-generational family business, we will win this game because we play for the long term.”
According to Boomsma, the combination of family roots paired with LeadingRE’s global resources is tough to beat.
“With deep legacies that continue to evolve, these companies are the envy of many in the industry. Our job is to support them as they look to the future—fostering success not only for today, but also for generations to come.”

The Etiquette of the Housewarming Party
Westover Hills, Texas | Laurie Brants & Rob Schumacher, Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty
The finishing touch to any major renovation or move, a housewarming can mark a new era in the life of your home. And like any social gathering, there are guidelines for housewarming party etiquette that every host—and guest—should keep in mind.
Housewarming parties are traditionally more casual affairs, but there are a few ways to ensure they are a memorable and thoughtful occasion. Whether you’re hosting or attending, here are a few helpful pointers to make that fall refresh as celebratory as possible.
For the Host
Take Time to Settle In
Diablo, California | Anton Danilovich and Rebecca Burns, Golden Gate Sotheby’s International Realty
Establishing a new home—or finishing extensive renovations—is an exciting accomplishment, one you’ll want to share with friends and family. But there’s no rush to make your home party ready. Leave yourself time to apply the final coats of paint, hang art, and select the perfect pieces of furniture to make your space feel complete. Invitations can wait, and taking a moment to settle in ensures your home feels like yours—and is warmly welcoming when it comes time to host guests.
Think Strategically About Timing
Park City, Utah | Brian Wilson, Summit Sotheby’s International Realty
Your housewarming will have a different feel and structure depending on what time of day you’re planning to invite guests into your new home. If you’re hosting a Sunday afternoon gathering, catered canapés and mimosas are a brunch-appropriate refreshment choice; if you’re aiming to welcome guests during dinner hours, be sure to serve enough food to constitute a meal. Hosting in the evening means refreshments can be limited to casual drinks and light hors d’oeuvres—the scale and scope of your party is best determined by when it’ll take place. Clarify the food offerings on your invitation, and confer with your caterer on ways to keep service natural and easy.
Invite the Neighbors
San Miguel de Allende, Mexico | Wesley Gleason, Agave Sotheby’s International Realty
The main purpose of throwing a housewarming party is to settle into your new home by welcoming others into your space, but it can also mean settling into a community. By inviting your neighbors to your festivities, you’ll be setting the tone for future friendly interactions in the neighborhood. It’s an easy way for your neighbors to get to know you—and you them—in a low-pressure, casual social environment.
Go Light on Decoration
Perugia, Italy | Diletta Giorgolo S., Italy Sotheby’s International Realty
A housewarming party needn’t be weighed down with elaborate themes or grand gestures—this is a party designed to share your beautiful new space, so your home can do most of the work. Simple decorative measures like elegant pillar candles, fresh flowers, and freshly-pressed tablecloths are sufficient and allow your guests to take in your space without the distraction of ornate displays. If seating or servingware are going to be an issue, rent the appropriate pieces to help your evening progress smoothly. The goal is to keep the focus on your home; encouraging flow through your entertainment spaces and guiding guests on tours should take precedence over show-stopping extras.
For the Guest
Come Bearing Gifts
Raleigh, North Carolina | Susan Bashford, Hodge & Kittrell Sotheby’s International Realty
While a host should never request gifts or send out gift registries with housewarming invitations, it’s accepted practice to bring a small present when celebrating a new home. The gift need not be elaborate, but it should act as a small gesture of thanks for their hospitality and as a way to help them settle into their new space. A glass decanter is an elegant choice, as is a marble serving board or bottle of wine: think of gifts as a way to augment the host’s future social gatherings in their space. The gift is a token of appreciation for the invitation as much as it is a way to warm their home.
Bring Warmth
Encinitas, California | Kevin Dalzell, Ryan Dalzell, and Jim Dalzell, Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty
It may seem simple, but remembering to compliment the homeowner’s new space is an important part of being a gracious guest. Your host has invited people in their home en masse for the first time, and reassuring comments are a kind and simple way to help them celebrate this achievement. While it is a social gathering, it’s best to refrain from letting the food—or drink—distract you from the true purpose of the event: let the home and the host remain the focus.
The housewarming party comes with best etiquette practices, like any other social gathering, but one of the most important things to remember is that it should be enjoyable. Whether you’re a host or a guest, keep things relaxed: the point of the party is to establish memories in a new space, and to turn a house into a welcoming home.
If thoughts of hosting have you aspiring to a new space, discover homes for living and entertaining among these inspiring listings.

Minnesota Wild All-Star Ryan Suter Reluctantly Selling Wisconsin Retreat for $4.5M
Robin Alam/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images
When Minnesota Wild All-Star Ryan Suter needs to relax, the defensive stalwart heads to his retreat in Wisconsin’s Driftless Region, in the tiny town of Mazomanie.
That five-bedroom, seven-bath home, and the 120 acres it sits on, is now on the market for $4.5 million, listed with Paul Handle with Mahler Sotheby’s International Realty in Milwaukee.
In 2011, Suter—a Madison, WI, native—had the 12,000-square-foot mansion custom-built, including a home theater, tennis court, billiard room, and wine cellar. Covered spaces near the outdoor pool are designed to weather a chilly spring or fall.

Mazonmanie is 25 miles northwest of Madison and has a population just under 2,000.
“The home’s positioned high up on a hill from a long driveway that comes up to the highway from a gate,” explains Handle. “It was really built to capture the views.”
He adds, “the finishes are world-class.” The home offers top-notch features such as plank floors and marble baths. The kitchen is equipped with commercial-grade appliances.

Because Suter uses the home only during the NHL off-season, “it may be seven years old, but it’s only been lived in for (the equivalent of) about a year,” says Handle.
In Wisconsin, a home listing for $4.5 million is outside the norm. There are posh second-home enclaves such as Lake Geneva and Door County, where big crowds flock in summer, which almost defeats the purpose of a quiet country retreat.
Handle is marketing the listing nationally in hopes of attracting the perfect buyer.
“This is an unbelievable Door County alternative. I think it’s going to attract entrepreneurs or other athletes,” says the agent. “It could just be a buyer who wants the solitude or for hunting.”

“It’s a sanctuary, a getaway. Ryan has a very busy and physically intense career,” says Handle. The home “was built to have guests,” and putting it on the market wasn’t a move Suter came to lightly.
“This is a tough decision. He loves this place,” says Handle.
But now that his kids are older, there’s a pull to be near urban amenities, and Suter’s saying goodbye to his sanctuary, says Handle. “They live in Maple Bluff (a suburb of Madison) now.”
Suter has spent 13 seasons in the NHL and been named an All-Star eight times. After spending the first seven seasons of his career with the Nashville Predators, he signed a remarkably long 13-year, $98 million deal with the Minnesota Wild.
