Haunting the Narrative Round 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Haunting the narrative means that the character’s absence heavily impacts the plot. They’re not present when their influence is most strongly felt, whether they’re alive or dead!

Round 1: Left Side, Bracket 1 #3
Tumblr media
Well, you asked for it. Thanks to a vigorous campaign, two underdog candidates have made it into the fray. Some might say that a spoiler character has to be a "real character" from an "actual piece of media", but listen, the part where they revealed Lysanderoth was Lygon was SUCH a huge moment probably. I don't know, I skipped the cutscene.

Restorative justice and community in Samurai Flamenco
Tumblr media
Content warning: discussion of police brutality, mass shootings, and systemic violence
Spoilers for Samurai Flamenco
Samurai Flamenco is a story about the intersection of community and justice. The main character, Hazama Masayoshi, is intent on living out the ideals he learned from the hero stories that captured his imagination as a child. Their values guide his actions, so much so that he decides to become one himself, under the moniker Samurai Flamenco. As he navigates this choice, he begins to learn that heroes and villains are parts of their community, not forces outside of it. This causes him to re-evaluate what justice means to him and how he wants to practice it. This process closes the gap he sees between himself and his community, has him reject violence, and roots his sense of justice in love and empathy rather than punishment. According to the logic of the story, the world around Masayoshi is being shaped by his unspoken desires (at least until the final arc). This means a viewer can retroactively read revelations about Masayoshi as a character onto how the narrative develops. To put it lightly, at the beginning of the story, Masayoshi is a highly privileged individual. He was scouted as a model in high school and lives in a nice apartment at the top of a building, with sufficient wealth to have an extensive collection of hero paraphernalia. This distance between him and the street is a very literal barrier that serves as a metaphorical one as well. Masayoshi is well-meaning, but his wealth, fame, and isolation from his community restricts his empathy. He sees his role as a hero as distinct from being a normal person.

2013-era tumblr comic sans powerpoint trying to get my followers to watch samurai flamenco but in deference to the people who believe it's best experienced without spoilers it's just one slide that says "this is Masayoshi and he's an amateur superhero that stops petty crime to fulfill his childhood dream and he makes some friends along the way uwu" and the rest are blurred and redacted like classified documents. you think you see the blurred image of a gorilla on there but assume you must be mistaken

Samurai flamenco was truly the greatest love story ever told. It hits so many beloved tropes of mine. Masayoshi is so ace coded. Goto is so fucking broken. I'm not gonna say spoilers in a random post but their relationship is everything to me and my hatred of that kill la kill anime is 100% because it overshadowed Samurai flamenco that season.

im a little bit mad about the results of that bracket but i know its not my fault nor is it a lack of effort on the fandoms part. people simply voted for the option they recognized even if that option wasnt really a spoiler. oh well good work guys maybe some people took notice of samurai flamenco and we'll have some new people in the tag soon?

Are you going into Samurai Flamenco blind, or do you know spoilers?
I watched it back when it came out so I know everything! I started a rewatch a couple years ago and then stopped for some reason so I think I'm picking it back up around episode 12

ive looked through your 2023 watched stuff but ive been wondering if youve said anywhere what your favourite animes of all time are ? just curious cus i want more reccs
ooh good question! i am so indecisive and so full of love for so many series that it's always been a bit of a struggle to pick out just a few absolute faves, but here are the first few that come to mind
(i'll try to keep to shorter series here)
and standard disclaimer that everything here is my opinion and my opinion only
best anime of all time: shouwa genroku rakugo shinjuu, and for me nothing even comes close
the story is told over the course of two seasons (the second being shouwa genroku rakugo shinjuu: sukeroku futabi-hen; 25 episodes total) and it is imo just an absolute masterpiece. it's a somber tale, but executed in such a masterful way. the show is centered around rakugo and rakugo performers, and felt to me like not only an incredible story but an incredible performance of the art of storytelling
i don't rewatch this one very often because it makes me so sad, but i think it's a beautiful and worthwhile sort of sadness to experience
best sports anime of all time: kaze ga tsuyoku fuiteiru (23 episodes), and once again nothing even comes close. which means a lot coming from me because i love sports anime i will watch any sports anime i love good ones i love bad ones i love them unconditionally i'm like sports anime georg so 'best sports anime' is maybe even a more significant crown than 'best anime' coming from me lmao
ahem anyway in terms of objective quality there's just nothing that beats kazetsuyo, and i highly recommend it even as a character-centric piece for people who aren't generally into sports anime. it's just that good
side note 1: while i would call kazetsuyo the 'best' sports anime, my personal favorite is eternally kurobas (though it is on the longer side)
side note 2: honorary mention to megalo box, another of my all-time favorites. it's sports + sci-fi so i typically don't count it solely as a sports anime, but i love it to bits. there is a second season that i haven't even seen yet! i've always heard the second season is even better than the first, so i've been saving it for a special day (also i'm a bit scared of it because i was so happy with the ending of the first season that i'm kinda like resistant to change lol)
best anime i can't tell you anything about: so generally i'm of the belief that spoilers don't ruin much for me, if something is done well then it's done well even if i know it's coming. that said, there are a handful of series where i am so glad i went in knowing nothing, so that every twist and turn caught me completely unawares
and the top two i would recommend in this category are samurai flamenco (22 episodes) and sarazanmai (11 episodes)
definitely do look up trigger warnings if you've a need for them! but otherwise, going in knowing nothing really heightened the experience of these for me
they are... strange, and amazing
this is getting long so i'll just dump a bunch of favorites in a list below (some are Great, some are decidedly Not Great but Very Fun and beloved to me lol, and all are 25 episodes or less)
feel free to ask for details if you'd like to hear more about any of these, or if you'd like recs in any specific genres!
acca: 13-ku kansatsu-ka, appare-ranman!, baccano!, barakamon, cool doji danshi, dorohedoro, fantasy bishoujo juniku oji-san to, gankutsuou, gekkan shoujo nozaki-kun, houseki no kuni, ikebukuro west gate park, kimi to boku, kuragehime, paripi koumei, sabikui bisco, tiger & bunny (and its distant cousin double decker! doug & kirill), uchouten kazoku, wotaku ni koi wa muzukashii, yojuhan shinwa taikei, yuru camp
side note 3: just realized tiger & bunny is actually no longer under 25 episodes because we got a second season after like ten years lmao BUT i couldn't bring myself to remove it because it is phenomenal

May I ask you to post my submission essay for "Goto's Girlfriend (no name given)"?
Of course! Here it is:
(This will spoil significant plot points) For the majority of the anime she's presented as the woman the story's deuteragonist, Goto Hidenori, is dating long distance. They interact via texting and there's one early episode that has Goto lose and regain the cutesy umbrella he had borrowed from her, but for the most part she's just a background presence for him to vent to about the absolutely Buckwild Shenanigans his superhero friends get up to. (Goto is basically the Only Sane Man in an absurdist comedy about Super Sentai tropes)
Until we get to the final arc that is. Goto's friend the protagonist Hazama Masayoshi finds out that the girlfriend he's heard so much about actually went missing years ago, only leaving behind her umbrella, her cellphone, and her distraught highschool boyfriend. To cope with the loss, Goto has been texting himself with her cellphone. Every word we've heard of her thus far has just been an expression of Goto's internal conflicts. She's been dead all along, haunting the narrative all along, and nobody ever even realized.
The story's climax then turns into a question of wether this haunting can be quelled in some way. The final villain tries to exploit Goto's unhealthy attachment to the girlfriend in order to create a tragic event that is meant to serve as a tragic origin story for Masayoshi. Meanwhile Masayoshi tries his hardest to save Goto by earnestly confessing his love and proposing to him. Goto is finally able to somewhat put Her to rest as he has her text that she's "going away on travels for a while." Post Canon material shows that "She" approves of a relationship between Goto and the Masayoshi, signifying that Goto's finally begun to move on.

Losers Round 2: Bracket 1, #2
Tumblr media
The classic spoiler character dilemma: not wanting to reblog a picture of your blorbo's face. If they even have one.
If you would like to confirm who you're voting for, the characters' names are listed below the cut. Keep in mind that given the nature of this tournament, there may be, well, spoilers.
Left/first option: Goto's unnamed girlfriend from Samurai Flamenco
Right/second option: Barry Bluejeans from The Adventure Zone

imagine being goto hidenori and just like. one day you clock into your shit job as a low rank officer (you only joined the cops to look for your missing gf btw) and there is like. the guillotine gorilla thing. it was a regular ass day at work, making a drug bust being a dog of the state or whatever and then there is a fucking tokusatsu monster decapitating people. you recently met this absulute nutcase guy who is a normal ass model (he is cute you'll give him that) who doubles as a superhero but he got like famous for actually being a good superhero. and he starts to fight these monsters instead of the local crime shit that made him famous and it keeps escalating and the next thing you know you're sitting down like you're waiting for someone to try clothes at the store while this dude you met naked in an alley is talking to god and that's not the weirdest part of your day by far. that's the chill part. I could keep going because that's not even everything that happens but like. My god lmao. and then you end up marrying the guy after all and he is officially president of the earth but you just go back to your very normal lives after all this shit??? Jesus ajsjskakakak

it's hard to joke about samurai flamenco (my beloved) bc while I'm not a person who cares about spoilers, I realize I'm in the minority here and a lot of people think the best way to experience the show is to go in completely blind. but like... guys... I cannot stress this enough [spoiler spoiler spoiler oh my god spoiler] but that boy went to the moon and met god, the literal universe itself. he was even gay. if you even care.
