Here’s the second batch of questions that Savin has answered on Twitter! Again, tweets are in order from most to least recent, and answers are not 100% true/canon since things may change during production.

@fantasyfox101: another question why is Maya such an emotional anchor for don Wei? I mean he may love his wife but he should still love his [cont] daughter enough to take comfort in her company. He shouldn't have abandoned her, he should have devoted his time to raising her

@EiffelSavin: F1 Teams create their own cars using parts from different manufacturers. Same here. WeiRace is a racing team with its homemade "star-racers"

@EiffelSavin: Lots of questions... Don & Maya shared a same passion. Molly being a tomboy didn't fit in and some students - not all - resented her for that

@EiffelSavin: Maya's an intelligent & confident woman. She may dress a little sexy but that's just her taste - not trying to show off just being herself.

@EiffelSavin: More like a couple of weeks. On Alwas there was 98 teams but most got quickly eliminated after the 5 first rounds.

@fantasyfox101: if no human can reconnect with magic does it mean Jordan won't be able to control his avatar powers or is there exceptions [cont] with the circumstances or individual, and will there be a consequence to Jordan becoming the avatar for the galaxy?

@EiffelSavin: The Avatar powers are channeled through a choosen individual by the Creators regardless of that individual's origin

@fictionjustis: It just got to me that Maya's parents may still be alive and where filled with contempt for Don Wei instead of resenting him

@EiffelSavin: I'm not sure we'll have a chance to go deeper into that plotline but who knows 😉

@fantasyfox101: in Oban Star racers Humans show alarming similarities to the Crogs is this to show that humans would have been the Next crogs [cont] or that any species given the right circumstances and opportunities would have been the same as the crogs

@EiffelSavin: I didn't want to have good humans vs bad crogs. All species in the show have good sides & bad sides. It's much richer & realistic that way.

@EiffelSavin: Don Wei starts off has very unsympathetic. But his relation ship with Eva totaly changes by the end

@EiffelSavin: Belonging to a lower class - a simple "self made man" - taking their prised daughter down the dangerous path of racing.

@EiffelSavin: Humans knew once, a very long time ago, but they have fared too far away from nature now to be able to reconnect with magic

@EiffelSavin: I think it really started with Canaletto causing Maya's crash. At that time he "scanned" potential future Oban contestants background... [cont] And found a perfect candidate for his evil plan in sweet innocent Eva.

@EiffelSavin: Yes. We're working on it.

@Mendinso: Out of curiosity, do you think you guys will make the Japanese audio available legally? I've seen the series in Japanese in not... so legal> [cont] methods and always wanted to purchase the Japanese version down the road. Any plans for that?

@EiffelSavin: We're hoping to get the japanese dub as well but unlike French & English dubs we don't control these rights at present.

@CCharmanderK: Does all the precompositing material still exist? Would it be possible to do an HD recomposite of the series later down the line?

@EiffelSavin: Recomposite would be very costly and should not be necessary The masters are already in HD. [cont] We plan to use these hd masters for a future bluray release.

@fictionjustis: It just got to me but if maya hadn't died in the racetrack but was killed by any other means in a way Don couldn't blame [cont] himself like for example an illness would Don Wei still have abandoned Eva in his grief after Maya's death [cont] and if it was the other way around like Don Wei was the one who died and Maya had lived would Eva still have had a miserable [cont] childhood or Would Maya have reacted to grief in another way?

@EiffelSavin: It would have been different but don't forget Canaletto had been pulling the strings all along...

@lbigreyhound: Are there any plans for DW, Rick, Stan, Koji, and Jordan to return in the possible sequel? It would be interesting to see them!

@EiffelSavin: Some characters would return, others who have already played their part wouldn't

@EiffelSavin: Rick would deserve a whole series just for himself but we have to take steps one at a time 😉

@EiffelSavin: I'll leave it open to interpretation for now. Could be age. Could be several Crog subspecies with slightly different local characteristics

@EiffelSavin: I can't gatantee the plot will allow it but it would certainly be nice to learn more about maya

OBAN Star Racers 15th Anniversary

Hi fellow Oban fans!

As I said in a previous post, today was the celebration of Oban’s 15th anniversary, which was held in Paris in a little cinema. It was obviously hosted by Savin Yeatman-Eiffel himself, as well as Stanislas Brunet who worked on the mecha and background designs.

So it went like this: Savin made a presentation about the series in itself, how the idea came to be, the first sketches made by himself and his friends, and all the struggles he and Sav! The World studios faced during the production. The hardest part was finding funds to produce the series, since making a single episode can cost up to half a millions euros.

The French VAs of Molly and Aikka were there too, and they redubbed one of the scenes live! The funniest part was that the guy who did Aikka’s voice is a tall, bearded, burly guy with the kind of voice you’d expect from a dude with that build; and yet when he did Aikka’s part I was speechless!!! Then Savin invited two people in stage to redo the dub for fun. The girl who did it had a voice that strangely sounded like Molly’s, but the poor guy who did Aikka’s part probably didn’t remember the passage well despite the subtitles and stammered a lot. But it was nice!

Savin had planned to talk about The Two Queens movie but he didn’t have the time. I asked him about the project afterwards, and he told me that he still wanted to do it, but like Oban, he had troubles funding it. By the time he pitched it, Netflix was not into funding indie projects yet. He also started working on other projects with several studios so The Two Queens had to unfortunately be put on stand-by.

And then. OH THEN. He talked about the thing we ALL wanted to know:

The Sequel

Savin explicitly asked us to not film or take pictures, so I won’t talk about it in detail. But basically there is not one, but THREE project ideas:

1) A sequel based on the picture released back in 2017 with a brand-new plot but still related to the Oban lore. He doesn’t know if the girl would be Molly or Molly’s descendant.

2) An Aikka spin-off prequel. I WAS SO HYPED.

3) A sequel where Molly takes up on Aikka’s offer to visit his planet.

He tested the waters to see which project seemed to please us the most, which was project 1 - I told him, to quote my own words “I’m team Aikka, so my hype for the second project is HELLA BIG, but I honestly won’t care I’m willing to pull out the chekbook as long as it’s Oban related” - and project 2 was rather popular but we suggested he switched media (like making a comic).

I asked him the same question I asked Thomas Romain when I met him at the Japan Expo Sud back in 2018: could we help funding it through Kickstarter for example? Unfortunately, like the original series, we’re talking about millions of euros here so we can’t help that much.

Then we moved on to the next part: VIDEO GAMES. There was a Nintendo DS game originally planned but the studio let him down at the last minute. He showed us some footage of the game which looked quite good (mid-2000s DS game relatively speaking).

He also officially announced that today was released an Oban fangame via Playstation Dreams called Oban Star Racers Dreams by Sky Isle Studios.

There’s also another game - still in its project phase - for PC which would hopefully be released in a few years.

Last but not least: if you guys follow Savin Yeatman-Eiffel on twitter, you might know that he got back the rights of Oban and has been gradually collecting the dubs that had been made (apparently the Brazilian release stopped at ep 18, which means they never got the end!!) to re-release the series as blu-ray. The said blu-ray collection will be up on Kickstarter in Frebruary 2022, with several stretch goals and packs - from the complete OST digital release to packs with original drawings and figurines - so stay tuned!

Although he knows the fandom never died, Savin hopes that we can gather new people and touch a larger public. I suggested for example to release the show on Netflix, because it will find some new public!

I love your works and hearing that you're a fellow fan of Oban?! I hurried to answer this ASAP, so I hope I haven't left you waiting too long!

The first I ever heard of a potential sequel was MANY years ago...or, it feels like that, anyways. I emailed them back in 2017 about my own personal ideas, and ended up being told, "Hey, keep up to date on Oban's future through the new (!!) Twitter!"

As for what's going on in the present day...

Two things are on-going right now: Oban Star Racers Kickstarter and vague plan for a future spin-off. (OSR has been completed, as far as I understand, so any future stories within the world would either be a sequel or a new story in this world.)

The OSR Kickstarter is running right now! You can put your money towards getting a Blu-Ray of OSR, as well as a bunch of neat goodies! The more you're willing to pay forward, the better your return... As well, Mr. Savin Yeatman-Eiffel encourages people to KEEP donating to the Kickstarter! This is our combined effort to bring back OSR, so every dollar counts.

As for the spin-off or sequel? Still being worked on! To my understanding, there was an excusive meetup to throw around ideas with fans, but there's still a lot to be done... Biggest of which is money! Which brings us riiiight back around to the Kickstarter.

Watched a load of Thomas Romain YouTube video to get these characters done with watercolour :)

I remember watching this series. Back on the Jetix channel in the early 2000’s along with, Shaman King, Naruto and a load others

In 2006, Sav! The World Productions created a French-Japanese anime series called Oban Star Racers, which aired in various countries all over the world as part of Jetix/Disney programming block. Oban tells the story of Eva "Molly" Wei and how she gets caught up in an interstellar race, The Great Race of Oban, with the "Ultimate Prize" on the line.

The series garnered many fans, eager to see where else this story could go. And in February 2022, as part of the series' 15th Anniversary, creator Savin Yeatman-Eiffel launched a Kickstarter to brings the series to BIu-Ray with great success!

How successful? Full funding within the hour, and they've also reached all initial stretch goals since! So to celebrate, I decided to create a drawing with Molly and the Earth Team's Star Racer, the Whizzing Arrow.

If you’re a fan of Oban and want to see the series get a re-release, or even some new life in sequel projects, I highly recommend either checking out the Kickstarter or even spreading the word around. And if you’re new to the series, I recommend giving it a shot if you’re a fan space adventures, racing, and stories with a touch of romance and family drama.

Turns out that Savin has been pretty active on Twitter answering questions from fans! I’ve gone through and collected all of them (so far) below- the tweets have been copy-pasted and edited for clarity in some places, with source links below each conversation. This post is long, but contains no images. Tweets are in chronological order from most to least recent.

I want to express that these answers are NOT 100% canon/true until proven otherwise, since things are bound to change during production.

@fictionjustis: out of curiosity, I read somewhere that the sequel pictures of Eva and Aikka are of them after a time skip exactly how many [cont] years have passed in that time skip? [cont] also is that your final character desighn for Molly and Aikka ?

@EiffelSavin: Not final. Age is a few years older but sticking with this will also depends on who our broadcasting partners will be...

And what kind of [continued in next section] @EiffelSavin: Don wei's parents died early. Maya still had some family but they didn't want her to race and resented dw. Cut ties with them both long ago.

@lbigreyhound: That's interesting! I never thought too much about what happened to Maya and Don's parents/Eva's grandparents, but it makes sense... [cont] ....as to why DW was so important to Eva. Her dad was literally all she had left. This was such a great show! I loved it when I was a kid!

@EiffelSavin: Yes. She has no one else to turn to.

@EiffelSavin: They look very close IF you drop the piercing, tom boyish haircut, red hair, clothes etc. of Eva. In terms of style: not exactly the same!

@EiffelSavin: More or less what we planned but wasnt easy to fit the whole story in a 26 epi format Somethings had to be left out or reduced to the min ☺

@EiffelSavin: Well that depends if there is such a thing as a male Inna race... [cont] I didn't really have the chance to expand on the topic but was thinking more in the ways of hermaphrodites, like snails do 😇

@EiffelSavin: HD but formatted originally in 4:3.
