Classic ED schedule - week 45 (2023)
Tumblr media
Andy is clueless when Debbie shows up to move in courtesy of Cain. Zoe gets startled in the woods and flees with Jean but forgets Joseph (Charity finds him on the road). Cain warns Daz off of Debbie. Is Diane getting cold feet about marrying Jack in six weeks? Zoe’s bad state (with a pan fire involved) and a terrified Joseph leads to the coppers being called and her sectioned. Jimmy wants out of the business. Chloe bags her man… Carl who later comes clean to Chas… Chloe vows revenge. It may be a separate homes arrangement for Jack and Diane after they get married. Donna is let go at the antiques shop and back in Viv’s shop. Sorry, Donna, no university for you but Viv books a holiday for them in Rome. Believing Diane & Rodney are having an affair, Val with Jack follow them to Scarborough for a funeral. It’s out… Diane has cancer. On a fish catch, Simon and Nicola get back together. Zoe agrees to let Sadie and Jimmy look after Home Farm. Pearl’s son is about to be released and Len wants a word with him.
THE UK START TIME FOR THE ENTIRE WEEK: 1:35 PM
06-Nov: 11-Aug-2004 (3815), 12-Aug-2004 (3816)
07-Nov: 13-Aug-2004** (3817), 15-Aug-2004** (3818)
08-Nov: 16-Aug-2004 (3819), 17-Aug-2004 (3820)
09-Nov: 18-Aug-2004** (3821), 19-Aug-2004** (3822)
10-Nov: 20-Aug-2004** (3823), 22-Aug-2004 (3824)
**Robert appears in the episode; September will be a high episode count (15 episode)
NEXT WEEK (subject to change due to potential preemptions): the real reason Frank, Pearl’s son, is in prison is revealed. Diane’s cancer hasn’t spread but still needs surgery. Is a job in Tanzania in the cards for Laurel… or a ring from Ashley? You’ve got a month’s notice to move out of Pear Tree Cottage Chas, Syd and Katie! Fourteen-year-old Debbie kisses Ethan who meets Cain’s shotgun. Sadie tries to coerce Robert’s help in a scheme (so it starts).

Note
I *knew* I saw an ask game earlier today. Finally found it :D
5. what is your favourite book/story/poem you read this year?
13. how did you change as a writer? did you learn anything new? started to plan instead of pants? share your wisdom!
Thank you for the ask 💖 From this ask game.
5. what is your favourite book/story/poem you read this year?
Possibly The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller (I know I’m a little late to that party but GOD it was beautiful).
This is a book for young readers but Beatrice and Croc Harry by Lawrence Hill. What a sweet, compelling read that entertained my mind, heart, and soul!
Two books I started but didn't finish yet, but are objectively amazing: Born a Crime by Trevor Noah and Scarborough by Catherine Hernandez
13. how did you change as a writer? did you learn anything new? started to plan instead of pants? share your wisdom!
My biggest thing was: learning the value of patience and planning.
Contrast:
Jumping into Book 3 in August with a sketchily detailed outline (using Save the Cat! beats), writing my heart out and having fun with it (k tbh it was pretty damn whumpy, that may have been part of it), but needing to call it quits 50k+ words in because it was obscenely long and disorganized and I didn't know where I was going.
versus
Forcing myself to wait till Nanowrimo to rewrite Book 1. Combing through that damn outline and adding detail for a good two months. Writing out a scene list. Organizing scenes into chapter summaries and knowing how many chapters I was going to write before I started writing. Fleshing out character profiles and their internal conflicts and motivations. I won Nano on Nov 22 - eight days early! I'm still dumbfounded.

PEMDAS -- 11•19•20
Welcome to the new PEMDAS Blog! My work on PEMDAS keeps expanding each week so it needs a bigger home. She loves The Overwhelm.
My main goal is to have a one glance spot for all things news/entertainment. I want it to contain as much detail as possible without being too cluttered. Striking the balance is hard. If you have feedback, please share it with me.
Open below for PEMDAS!
POLITICS/NEWS
U.S. Coronavirus Numbers
More than 11,695,500 people in the United States have been infected with the coronavirus and at least 251,100 have died.
The number of people who have died from Coronavirus in the U.S. is equivalent to 84 times the number of U.S. citizens who died in the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. It is 56 times the number of U.S. soldiers who died in the war against Iraq. It is 7 times the number of U.S. citizens who died from the flu last year.
On Nov. 18: 1,923 deaths (+52% 14-day change), 172,391 infections (+77% 14-day change)
The rates of infection and death remain disproportionately high in the Native American communities across the country. Just last weekend, 600 Native people died on the Navajo reservation.
Sen. Chuck Grassley from Iowa has contracted coronavirus. The nation mourns :-(
Global Coronavirus Numbers
The coronavirus pandemic has sickened more than 56,661,800 people, according to official counts. As of Thursday afternoon, at least 1,355,100 people have died.
On Nov. 18: 11,133 deaths (+13% 14-day change), 598,877 infections (+25% 14-day change)
Election 2020
President-Elect Biden claims that Trump’s refusal to concede the election is preventing him from accessing critical data about the U.S. outbreak and that this could slow the vaccine distribution process.
President-Elect Biden names Cecilia Muñoz as part of his transition team. Muñoz served as a top immigration advisor for Obama, justifying harsh immigration policies, including the deportation of thousands of Central American children and the killing of an executive order that would have halted deportations.
Nancy Pelosi is re-elected as Speaker of the House.
World News
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo toured an illegal Israeli settlement and said he has plans to tour another in the occupied Golan Heights. This violates multiple U.N. resolutions and the Geneva Conventions. He also labelled the B.D.S. movement “anti-Semitic.”
In Central America, at least 30 people have died from Hurricane Iota. About 160,000 Nicaraguans and 70,000 Hondurans were forced to flee from their homes.
The head of the Australian military has apologized to the people of Afghanistan after Australian special forces committed war crimes by killing 39 noncombatants in Afghanistan over the past 4 years.
A nearly three-decade-old ceasefire has ended in occupied Western Sahara — what many consider to be Africa’s last colony. Fighting has broken out in several areas between the Moroccan military and the Polisario Front, the Sahrawi liberation movement seeking independence, after the Moroccan military broke into a no-go buffer zone in southern Western Sahara.

EDUCATION — Topic: this Candace Owens tweet
“There is no society that can survive without strong men. The East knows this.“
Both of these sentences separately are not true; both of them together are not true.
Here is an article about a village in China (”the East”) with women running the show.
Here is a list of several others, mostly in “the East.”
“In the west, the steady feminization of our men at the same time that Marxism is being taught to our children is not a coincidence.“
First of all, Marx has not been an outright advocate for a gender-queer society.
Second of all, I think she’s right. Socialism and gender/queer theory are intertwined in so many ways.
“It is an outright attack.“
And I think she’s right about this, too. Socialism and gender/queer theory all are an attack on the cis-hetero white supremacist capitalist patriarchy.
“Bring back manly men.“
Okay, this is where I think she’s wrong again.
1) "Manly men” haven’t gone anywhere...
2) Is she basically arguing that a couple of men wearing dresses means every man is no longer “manly?” This makes no sense.
3) In a society, “manly men” can coexist with “feminized” men. There is enough room for everyone. And there will always be men who want to take up the “manly” MANtle. And there will be queer/trans masc people who will want to do the same, though I’m sure Candace would hate that.

Cruz Grabs Headlines Slamming Trump
LOS ANGELES (OnlineColumnist.com), Oct. 14, 2019.--Slamming 73-year-old President Donald Trump for suggesting that 76-year-old former vice President Joe Biden and his 50-year-old son Hunter should be investigated by China, 48-year-old Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tx.) grabbed headlines in the anti-Trump press.  With the House busy with its impeachment inquiry into Trump’s July 25 phone call with 40-year-old Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, Cruz gave the press some red meat.  Asked Oct. 13 by Margaret Brennan on CBS’s “Face The Nation” whether it’s appropriate for Trump to ask China to investigate the Bidens, Cruz said “of course not.”  “Election in the U.S. should be decided by Americans and it’s not the business of foreign countries—any foreign countries—to be interfering in our elections,” Cruz said.  Cruz didn’t give Trump the benefit of the doubt that he was not interfering with a U.S. Election, he was investigating corruption by the former VP and his son.
Cruz and other key Republicans don’t see how the press uses them to attack Trump, confirming their theory that Trump committed high crimes and misdemeanors when he spoke with Zelensky July 25.  But Trump has said emphatically that he only inquired about corruption, nothing to do with a presidential election. Concerned more about Hunter getting $50,000 a month on Ukraine’s Burisma Holding board, a natural gas company, Trump was only obliquely concerned about Joe, because he bragged at the Council on Foreign Relations in 2016 about getting Ukraine’s chief prosecutor Viktor Shokin fired when he wanted to investigate Burisma Holdings.  Cruz had no information to implicate Trump into “interfering” in a U.S. election, especially because Joe is not his Party’s nominee.  Cruz gave “Face The Nation” exactly what they were looking for:  Dirt on Trump.
Since Trump beat former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton Nov. 4, 2016, Democrats have looked to impeach him or de-legitimize the election.  Democrats have been open about wanting to get rid of Trump from Day 1.  They put all their hopes into Special Council Robert Mueller’s 22-month, $30 million investigation.  When Mueller delivered his findings in his Final Report March 23 essentially clearing Trump of Russian collusion, Democrats were apoplectic. Democrats led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerold Nadler (D-N.Y.) and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), cherry-picked the Mueller Report to charge Trump with “obstruction of justice.” When that didn’t fly they found a “whstleblower” who claims second hand Trump tried to extort Zelensky for dirt on Biden and his son, Hunter.
Brennan pressed Cruz to hazard his opinion on whether it was appropriate for Trump to ask Ukraine to get involved with internal U.S. matters.  “Do you thin that, say, the president’s personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, who’s been talking about Chian, who’s been talking about Ukraine, do you want him to testify about this sort of shadow foreign policy?” Brennan asked Cruz. “Listen, foreign countries should stay our of American elections,” Cruz said, knowing that Trump said the issue was about corruption.  Biden’s not the Democrat Party’s nominee, only a presidential candidate.  Brennan did her best to get Cruz to agree with House Democrats proceeding with an impeachment inquiry.  Cruz should have asked Brennan whether or not spying on the president by an intel or State Department employee is appropriate. Calling it a “whistleblower” complain stretches the whistleblower statute to the breaking point.
When you consider that Intelligence Community Inspector General [IG] Michael Atkinson said Sept. 30 that the so-called “whistleblower” was probably partisan, it makes you question the entire complaint. Intel Chief Adam Schiff told Joe Scarborough Sept. 17 that he had no contact with the whistleblower.  Schiff told Brennan yesterday that his office did have contact with the whistleblower before he-or-she filed a complaint Sept. 19   “I should have been much more clear about the whistleblower contact . . . the minute it was brought to my attention,” Schff told Brennan Oct. 13 on “Face The Nation.”  Schiff inconsistency raises real credibility issues about the whistleblower’s complain, no appearing it was orchestrated, maybe concocted, by Schiff’s office.  Calling snitching or spying a “whitleblower” complaint stretches the statute to the breaking point, raiding real doubts about its credibility.
Cruz not once questioned the “whistleblowr” complaint, knowing that Schiff lied about whether he had contact with the whistleblower before he-or-she went public with the complaint.  Cruz did nothing to defend President Trump, accepting Brennan’s assumption that Trump tried to interfere with the 2020 election:  The exact Democrat talking points.  “Listen foreign countries should stay out of American elections,” Cruz told Brennan.  “That’s true for Russia, that’s true for Ukraine, that’s true for China—that’s true for all of them.  It should be the American people deciding elections.”  No one disputes that but Trump said he was looking into corruption, not interfering with a U.S. election.  If Cruz were really disinterested, he would have asked Brennan about Schiff lying about his prior contact with the whistleblower.  Cruz should have reminded Brennan that Trump should be presumed innocent:  It’s the American way.

November Newsletter!
Hello & thanks for reading our newsletter!
Wanna receive this in your inbox? Click here to sign up! It means a lot to us that so many people care about improving housing and urbanism in this city. We've got some neat events cooking for the near future. In the meantime, let us tell you about housing news.
Rent controls
Recently, the province of Ontario announced it was expanding buildings under rent control. Tenants tend to appreciate controls, but there was a lot of negative feedback in the press about it. Do they hurt landlords? Do they help tenants? What are they good for? Phill, one of our co-founders, spent a lot of time looking at the nature and evidence behind rent controls. You can read the short of it in this op-ed published by the Toronto Star, or if you want to know more, he's published a rather thorough investigation you can find here.
National Housing Week
On Nov 22, 1998 the Federation of Canadian Municipalities recognized that homelessness is a national disaster, and since then it’s been celebrated as National Housing Day.
Canada is the only G8 country without a National Housing Strategy; this matters because, well, housing is complicated! and it helps to have a lot of high-level coordination. The Liberal government has been working on an NHS and they’ll be releasing it on Nov 22.
The Liberal government committed to a National Housing Strategy in their election campaign, and announced $11.2 billion in funding for the Strategy over the next decade earlier this year. An announcement on further details of the Strategy's commitments and how exactly the funding will be allocated are expected this month.
As a result, there’s a lot of housing related stuff going on!
EVENTS
To kick it off National Housing Week, The Co-op Housing Federation of Canada, Evergreen, Social Planning Toronto, and the Wellesley Institute are throwing a trivia night this Monday, November 20, at No One Writes To The Colonel from 7-9pm.

--
The majority of the $11.2 billion the Liberals have announced so far may well be spent after 2022 - well into a hypothetical third term. This is… something of a bait and switch, to put it lightly. The Ontario Coalition Against Poverty is calling on the federal government to allocate that money *now* for the crisis we have *today*.
On Wednesday OCAP is holding a protest at Allan Gardens:

On Thursday, from 6-930pm, CSI, Evergreen and The Stories We Tell are hosting a housing story telling night:

NEWS
CITY HALL
This year, for the first time, the city is trying to accurately count the number of homeless people who have died so far [ for clarity  here we may want to note here that the city previously counted the number of homeless people who died in shelters, but are now trying to expand that to the number of homeless people who are dying outside of city shelters as well] . An astonishing 70 homeless people have died this year, most under the age of 50, and there’s reason to believe we are undercounting deaths.
(We seem to be doing worse than nothing: recall that earlier this year the city voted to cut funding to homeless shelters.)
Meanwhile, the city is about to make about 40 people homeless as they expropriate and demolish a low-income motel in Scarborough.
New Airbnb rules go up to council on December 6th. It looks like there’ll be a yearly fee for folks looking to rent out their property, and it looks they will be limited to renting out their actual primary residence.
In Parkdale, residents protested the new development slated for King and Dufferin. This one’s tricky. It’s true that what we should be building is affordable housing. It's true that a high-end development like the one proposed might speed up gentrification. But it's hard for private developers to make a profit on affordable housing in high-demand areas of the city, and replacing two story walk-ups with denser housing and gaining some affordable housing seems like a net win. It’s tricky.
HOUSING, I GOT MINE
RBC tells us that says that affordability in Toronto has “hit the worst level measured in the city”.
The confusing thing about ignoring the housing crisis is that it’s unsustainable, and obviously not in our best interest. We here at BetterTO have been saying that this is going to strangle the city. How can our city keep on growing, if the young can’t live near where the jobs are, or save for retirement or have children?
CENSUS GALORE
In TOTALLY UNRELATED NEWS, results from the 2016 census show that compared to Boomers at the same age, fewer Millennials own their housing. The Wellesley Institute went deep on the numbers and found that renting is poised for a comeback, as more and more people are pushed out of homeownership.
Housing is dividing us. The Toronto region is now almost completely segregated by income as many low-income folks have been pushed out of the city's core and into the inner suburbs.
Housing traps us. Home equity loans are pushing people to hold unsustainable levels of debt -- and it’s wiping out a lot of wealth.
---
Housing is essential to us – stay tuned for more housing news and future BetterTO events and join our mailing list.
Until next time,
