Retrospective Review: Sean Connery & George Lazenby Bond Era

So I started watching old Bond movies as lead up to No Time to Die, which I'm really excited for. I have actually never seen any of the older Bond movies beyond the Brosnan era in their entirety. Brosnan was the Bond I knew growing up and I really started loving Bond movies only starting Casino Royale. I was worried that I would be really bored by the older Bond movies. I do have difficulty watching older movies at times, especially older action and effects movies because they are quite often very dated. But Connery especially is so beloved among the Bond fan community that I was eager to watch it. So I have watched all 7 of Connery's films, including the Non-EON Never Say Never Again as well as Lazenby's On Her Majesty's Secret Service. I would say that the movies are a mixed bag so far.

I think the Connery era started out strong and peaked at Goldfinger. I think Dr. No is a pretty good introduction. Its a little slow in the middle of the movie, but Dr. No is an effective villain and it ends well. From Russia with Love is better. Its probably the most grounded of Connery's Bond movies. I loved Robert Shaw as the assassin. Goldfinger is where the full Bond formula was formed, with all the tropes that the Bond movies are now famous for. I think its the most fun of the Connery era movies and the best paced film. From Goldfinger onwards, I think the Connery Bond movies slipped in quality. Thunderball is decent but there are a lot of action sequences under water and I feel the technology just wasn't there to film those scenes because I can barely tell who is who and what is happening in some of those underwater action scenes. It has also one of the unintentionally funniest assassination attempt scenes in the spa scene. I lost it when Bond was strapped to that cycle and was screaming for help. I really don't like You Only Live Twice. Its a full blown descent into camp. You feel bad for the Japanese actresses so obviously struggling with their English. And there is that weird makeup up job to make Connery look like Japanese, even though he doesn't really change much at all. Diamonds are Forever is an ordinary follow up to OHMSS. It really should have been a full blown revenge story. In theory, if not execution, it should have been the QoS of this era. But it ends up being a pretty silly adventure. Never Say Never Again is a remake of Thunderball. On one hand, the underwater scenes are significantly better, which is a measure of the improved technology in the 15 year gap between Thunderball and NSNA. But the movie just drags on and on in the second half. If could have been like 20 minutes shorter. And I still don't know what Largo was really doing with the bombs. Also, the film doesn't make use of the intriguing potential of an older Bond. It starts out showing how Bond is not at his peak, but everything after the first act is just Bond as usual. The movie I loved the most or at least tied with Goldfinger is ironically OHMSS. This is a large part to the fact that it has by far the best Bond girl of the era. It took me a while to realize that Tracy was played by the Queen of Thorns Diana Rigg herself. No wonder I liked her. The film also has the best Blofeld of the era.

In general, the Bond girls of this era are basically just people that Bond has to seduce. Even the villainous Bond girls are just there to be seduced. There are a few memorable ones. Pussy Galore is a name of legend. The Bond girls in Thunderball are all gorgeous. Kim Basinger in NSNA is always wonderful, but definitely Tracy remains far and away the stand out Bond girl out of all these films. There are definitely dated elements when it comes to the women in these movies. Just have to view them as films of the era. Bonds actions gets a far few of them killed. Jill Masterson's death in Goldfinger is definitely very much his responsibility. There is one absolutely hilarious scene in Diamonds are Forever where a half naked Plenty O'Toole gets tossed out of a high rise building into the pool barely before she can protest. That again just cracked me up for several minutes and surely that wasn't the reaction they were going for. Both Domino's I guess at least for to kill Largo in Thunderball and NSNA.

With regards to villains, there are a few that stick out. Definitely Blofeld and SPECTRE being the big organization, are the villains in all the films other than Goldfinger. I think Dr. No was a good villain. I quite enjoyed Robert Shaw as Donald Grant as well as Rosa Klebb in FRWL. Goldfinger was great. He was a break from the SPECTRE related villains. Bloefeld in OHMSS is great.

With regards to Bond himself, Connery is charm and charisma personified. There are times where the film's get repetitive with Bond seducing every woman he finds, the same flirtation scene with Moneypenny, the scenes with M etc... But through it all, Connery stands tall. He is really the big highlight of every film he's in, even in the ones that don't work much. I get why he's the Bond of an entire generation. Even in NSNA, when he's 50+, you still buy that he can do all the things he does. Lazenby is the one that surprised me. I think he really works well in OHMSS. Whereas Connery has this larger than life and almost invincible persona about, Lazenby feels younger and more vulnerable. And that's why he works so well in a movie where Bond essentially does not completely defeat the enemy and loses the woman he loves. I think he's excellent in the role. He's not got the natural charm and charisma of Connery, but he brings something different.

Anyways, next to the Roger Moore era of Bond. I am not sure how much I will enjoy it since I've heard his era of Bond really becomes goofy and outlandish. But I guess I will wait and see.

a superpower plot where two people are vigilante crime fighters who discover each other’s identity. i like the idea of them dating before this, so they’re both confused. they live in a world where superpowers are a known things, but certain people think people with powers are dangerous.

life and death raise a baby after a prophecy states the child will stop the next apocalypse. they baby basically gets raised in the underworld. life and death are maybe an old married couple? or they’re like wanting to be a couple, but never took the time to be? they’re both lesbians 😍

another super powers plot where fbi agents work a case where they take down a serial killer. they’re partners and end up in a game of cat and mouse with the killer. team work. arguing. fun.

a homicide detective or a missing persons detective works with a psychic who is a private investigator to solve crimes. i kind of want this plot to include vampires, werewolves, etc.

an exes plot where one of the people fucked up and still has feelings for the other character, but the other character has moved on. i imagine they have a kid together, so they try and make a friendship work.

s/ilence of the lambs plot where a criminal helps an fbi solve crimes. shit gets real when the criminal escapes prison and pops up in the agent’s house. drama

the president of the united states (or the person running for president of the united states) is a woman who’s in the closet. her and her personal assistant have an affair. except it’s not really an affair, because her husband is gay and doesn’t care.

one of characters doesn’t know they were brought to life through technology after they get into a car accident. the other person knows, but they’re left in the dark until something happens and they realize there’s something different about them.

a ghost haunts a character to help them solve their murder. they know that they won’t be the last victim and want to put a stop to the violence. i don’t know how the other character sees ghosts, but that’s a THING.

Me reading guardian: I really do not have to watch the show in Viki Learn mode I do NOT need to know every word in the script I can FOLLOW the plot without knowing each word chill.

So, we spend most of the time talking about how great Undertale is, and to its credit, it's an amazing game. But would you say that the game has any flaws? Anything that is not so good, or straight up bad? Because Mun is at least 90% sure that the game is not perfect, it's just that Mun loves it too much to see it

It is absolutely an amazing game, and talking about what is amazing about it is where I find the most fun dialogue. But yes, like anything, it’s not perfect. There are a few things that I think could have been improved upon in the game. They don’t bother me, but I recognize they’re there.

Orthographic errors. I don’t mean things like sentence fragments or other prescriptive rules of grammar. What I mean is that there are some misspellings in the game. There are some useless inconsistencies of text formatting - such as whether or not to capitalize ASGORE - or whether or not to put parentheses around some narrative comments in places like New Home. There are also some very strange uses of commas that, traditionally speaking for English orthography, are not “correct”. Punctuation as a whole is a little sloppy, inconsistent, or prescriptively incorrect.

Programming Errors. There are a few lines of dialogue that don’t go into the game because of typos in the programming. There is a way to predict when the “Are you allergic to anything?” question will pop up in the RUINS, but it was intended to pop up all the time. Programming errors happen and that’s no exception for Undertale.

World building holes. The underground is an amusing world of magic, and I’m not asking for all things to be explained - I don’t mind that somehow there’s an entire snowy forest underground. But there are definitely a number of world building inconsistencies. The biggest problem, in my opinion, is that the suggested timeline is inconsistent with the technologies the monsters own. I’ve seen a number of creative theories arise about what the timeline for Undertale is - even placing it one hundred years in the future - to try to work around the problems. There’s a whole lot of confused handflapping you have to do to figure out how far back in time Toriel was living with Asgore if they had access to VHSes… but then she had a cell phone in the RUINS… and on and on and on. It’s hard to settle a good timeline with what we know as time scale without running into technological anachronisms. As a linguist, I could point out how things get even worse if we look at linguistic data. How the monsters talk, for instance, is in contemporary day slang. Slang terms rarely last more than a few years of native speaker usage. So trying to “salvage” some of the technological questions by putting UT in the future doesn’t work because then we have linguistic problems galore (and I still don’t think it solves some other social and technological things).

Limited worldbuilding. There are some intriguing elements of the Undertale world. The lore behind monsters, magic, and SOULs is cool. But there’s admittedly a lot - a lot - that is underdeveloped in the world of monsters. I’m fine with not everything being explained, but there is a lot that isn’t even touched upon, or technically doesn’t make sense if you think about it. And much of the worldbuilding relies just on how humans live their lives... instead of creating new cultural elements, the monsters just copy their lifestyle from humanity.

Alphyne. Don’t get me wrong. Alphyne is fun and I love the fanart. Alphys’ date at the end of the Pacifist Route is very amusing and made me laugh. Yet while Toby Fox did hint that Alphys and Undyne were interested in one another, I feel as though he did not tap on all the storytelling elements he should have to make the chemistry work between these two characters. His hints were so subtle they were basically useless. For a first-time player, it’s going to pass completely over our heads. We don’t understand why there’s soda in Undyne’s house. We might not guess that Alphys is interested in Undyne during MTT’s quiz show. We might not hear the story of how Undyne and Alphys met at the dumps. It’s extremely easy to miss all the signs that Alphys and Undyne are interested in each other. Most of the signs are optional dialogue that you have to uncover by being thorough (like going through the Papyrus and Undyne phone calls). Since it’s that subtle, learning about Alphys and Undyne’s romance near the end of the Pacifist Route can feel a bit sudden and unexpected. It doesn’t feel naturally developed, but honestly, sometimes I play Undertale and it feels forced. I know Frisk is hopping into the middle of the monsters’ lives and all, but I still think that the foreshadowing, the hinting, the growth, and the characterization of Alphyne could have used a lot of storytelling improvements. I like it, it’s cute, but I recognize there could have been cool ways to expand it even more.

Visuals. There are some legitimately beautiful moments in Undertale. Don’t get me wrong. I love, for instance, lots of the rooms in Waterfall, and the boss fights with ASGORE and Asriel have some awesome instances for the eyes. I still feel as though a lot of the visuals in the game could be hugely improved. There are lots of areas that are very black and somewhat bland. I know some of that simplicity was intention by Fox (he frequently scrapped or modified art others did for his game to make it look crappier in fact), but I still think that making some areas look a little nicer would have been good.

These are some of the things I can think about now that I would say could have been improved. There are many more things that could have been improved, of course, but I don’t think I need to make this post longer. It’s good to be able to recognize that no story is perfect, but at the same time still celebrate and appreciate it and applaud it for all it’s done well. None of the mistakes or imperfections bother me. The game’s amazing, and it’s full of a lot of amazing nuance, attention to detail, characterization, narrative, emotionality, and creativity.

Record any relevant dates and names, definitions, arguments and examples. If you’re learning for practical purposes, e.g. to solve a particular problem in your business, write down what’s relevant to you and use examples from your world to illustrate the concepts presented.

There are multiple note-taking systems: outlining, Cornell notes, mind-mapping, etc. Pick up one that works best for you.

8. Fight the forgetting curve

The learner’s biggest enemy is the Forgetting Curve.

The Forgetting curve graph illustrates how quickly we forget the learnt material if we don’t take care. Generally speaking, around 70% of what we’ve learnt is gone out of our heads within 24hrs.

To ensure your newly absorbed knowledge doesn’t evaporate from your memory, schedule revisions and relearning into your diary. This can be as simple as going over your notes (see, they’re useful!), or even scanning the headlines/sub-headlines in the textbook. However, the most effective strategy is to put your learning into practice ASAP.

Adults best learn things that are relevant to them and when the knowledge and skills acquired can solve real-life problems. Having a practical project, even short and simple, provides you with excellent opportunities for immediate application of the learnt theory.

9. Don’t bother with learning styles but take context for learning into consideration

The theory of learning styles (e.g. visual, auditory, kinesthetic learners) still holds quite strongly, but actually, scientific evidence to support its effectiveness is weak

Don’t get me wrong, I like it too – it’s convenient and fun, but evidence is evidence. You’re welcome to use whichever learning preference suits you best, however, more importantly, take into consideration the context for learning.

If you have an audio book you want to retain a lot of information from, don’t listen to in while driving. Firstly, you won’t be able to fully concentrate on driving AND listening,so please do not do it for your own and other road users’ sake. Secondly, you won’t be able to take notes.

Choose something less knowledge-dense, or more entertaining. If you’re intending to read while on a train, consider taking a notebook with you, or take notes in the reading app.

Conversely, if you want to learn a practical skill, such as knitting or wood work, you’d be probably better off watching videos rather than reading a book/article even with some pictures.

10. Set up a study routine

Study routine is a powerful way to boost your learning abilities. It puts you on a ‘learning autopilot’: you don’t have to remember you’re supposed to learn now, you don’t have to fight motivational battles, you just quietly get on with it and reap the rewards of regular learning.

Start with as little time as you can dedicate to it, but be practical – there is little use of 5min, if you not able to complete your task. The easiest way to commit to a regular study/learning session is to use an existing slot of time you already have to yourself. Commute, exercise time, lunch breaks, or house chores time can work well here. Just add a book/audio course or video series to it and don’t forget to take notes.

Another great advantage of having a regular slot dedicated to learning is that you can schedule your ‘revisions’ into it. If you’re reading about Emotional Intelligence today, recap the highlights of today’s reading tomorrow – to consolidate your knowledge.

Hack into your learning brain

You are motivated to life-long learning and self-development. You put your time and effort into learning. Now, you need to maximize the return on your investment in learning. Use those evidence-based tricks to take your knowledge to the next level.

Keep practicing these strategies, and with time, you’ll see what difference the right tools can make. Your ‘brain power’ will boost, your memory will improve. You will become a more powerful, more efficient and more effective fast learner.

7 mobile newsrooms to inspire you

Back before brand journalism revolutionized websites, company newsrooms tended to post links to press releases and maybe a catch-all phone number on the side.

That’s no longer enough. Companies are using their newsrooms to tell stories and engender news media coverage. They are thinking not only about journalists, but how to reach consumers and customers. They are offering b-roll with compelling action, as well as executive interviews that TV stations can crib from.

Here are a few organizations’ newsrooms you can draw inspiration from:

Coca-Cola Journey: Beyond the old-fashioned newsroom

Coca-Cola caught the attention of the PR world when it launched an ambitious brand journalism project, Coca-Cola Journey, to tell its story. Rather than establishing a separate storytelling platform, Coke boldly turned its main corporate site into a webzine. Furthermore, it announced it was going to kill the press release.

Coca-Cola was already all-in on the idea of designing for smartphones in 2013, and its commitment to a mobile newsroom endures.

“With smartphones in the hands of so many people, we now have a tremendous ability to deepen engagement with our consumers,” a company leader said at the time.

Coke staffed its newsroom with people who had journalism backgrounds. You’ll find stories on can’t-miss state fairs and entertainment mogul Tyler Perry’s visit to Coca-Cola’s Atlanta headquarters. Coke realized that its people were a selling point, and its careers section doesn’t just list openings, but also tells stories about its people. As a company with a history dating from 1892, Coke understands the value of archival content. The site even boasts social content—inviting fans to upload photos of their “Coca-Cola moments.”

Reporter resources can be reached with a tap from the front page of the mobile platform. It’s easy to find contacts by region, although I’d like to see Coke add contacts at the bottom of every press release.

Cisco: Tech news, smartly designed

Cisco is one of the leaders in its field, but the first iteration of a brand journalism website looked as if it had been designed on a typewriter. The content was excellent. The design? Not so much. That’s improved, though. Its clean, smart responsive design looks spiffy on a desktop, tablet or phone.

Cisco is among the tech giants offering rich content, making them look more like a magazine than a corporate newsroom. Stories feature Cisco’s good-citizen efforts, such as Hurricane Florence relief, and technologically oriented think pieces from its stable of expert writers (“The many applications for blockchain,” for one). There are serious company announcements and fun pieces (“5 jokes only programmers would understand”).

One lesson to draw is this: Make it easy to navigate. From a smartphone, you can tap on a drop-down list for different sections: Home, News Releases, Corporate, Regions and Category (such as Digital, Innovation, People & Culture, etc.).

Glory be, the news releases include named contacts, emails and phone numbers.

Cleveland Clinic: Health tips and, um, ‘ musical fruit ’

Cleveland Clinic was among the hospital groups to grasp an essential truth: People are hungry for news about health, not the expensive procedures health care executives are hoping to sell.

The clinic’s HealthEssentials site discusses matters of wellness, diet and exercise in the way everyday people do, as in the article, “The Musical Fruit: What You Should Know About Beans (and Gas).” If that man in your life seems to be angry all the time, you might be interested in “Is He Depressed or Just Crabby?”

The famed hospital’s health blog draws millions of visitors a month, but it would not be the powerhouse it is if it spent all its time touting colonoscopies and bariatrics surgery. Its ultimate objective is brand awareness, not patient volume, its content marketing director has said.

A link to “media relations” at the bottom of the page leads to the formal newsroom, with downloadable content and press releases that include names and phone numbers.

H&R Block: The expertise that reporters—and consumers—are seeking

H&R Block works to deliver relevant and timely content, not just to journalists but to consumers as well. The newsroom has launched its internal experts into major publications.

The company often earns news media coverage through newsjacked content—“‘This is Us’ house fire recovery, then and now”—and helpful information for those dealing with the complexities of tax preparation as in “Filing Taxes When A Loved One Is In Prison.” Even when H&R Block doesn’t spark the story, its experts are quoted often, because the newsroom gives them visibility, as in an NBC News story that cited the tax preparer’s vice president of regulatory affairs.

H&R Block’s “Newsroom Resources” offers essentials that reporters ask for, such as news releases, an archive, mini-bios of the newsroom team, leader bios and a media library with b-roll, sound bites and infographics. Plus, it’s all easy to navigate on a phone.

Microsoft: Telling a story

As we noted when we gave Microsoft an award for its corporate newsroom, news.microsoft.com offers frequently updated brand journalism pieces focusing not on products or services, but on people, including customers and employees. The News Center provides what reporters are looking for: executive biographies, analyst reports, executive speeches, fact sheets, video and b-roll, press contacts and (of course) press releases. All of these are easily accessed from a drop-down menu.

Similarly, Microsoft Story Labs reflects a realization that an organization with the population of a city (more than 90,000) has multiple yarns to spin. One piece profiles the guy who composes the bloops and bleeps your computer issues when an email arrives or a battery runs low. Another tells about a Microsoft “technical fellow” who is a computing icon.

Such an approach eases the pressure on PR pros to beg the news media for coverage. Instead organizations can use their own platforms to get the word out.

The borough of Hackney, England: Government news, usefully displayed

It’s not always easy for government entities, operating on a shoestring and hampered by tradition, to come up with a sharp website and invest the money for responsive design.

Hackney’s newsroom (designed with PressPage), pulls it off, with a clean design and content that includes community events (“Play streets galore for Car Free Day in Hackney”) and community history (“explore Hackney’s links to the Caribbean and look at how Black Britishmusic has shaped the borough”).

Among other strengths: its design is responsive. If you highlight a quote, a window pops up that makes it easy to retweet, encouraging social media interaction. The Hackney Council Press Office lists its phone number and email address right there on the home page. On behalf of reporters everywhere, thank you, Hackney.

Red Bull: Brilliant content, cautionary tale

I am including Red Bull—a company known for its dynamic content—as a cautionary tale. If you’re looking for inspiration on design and storytelling, Red Bull’s consumer-facing website is hard to beat, and its separate company information site is clean and easy to navigate. The brand is famous for killer stories, images and videos on topics such as madman swimmers, music festivals and bizarre robots doing the jobs you wouldn’t expect, among them novel writing. (Aaaaugh!)

There’s one serious problem: What isn’t easy to navigate is contacts for reporters seeking comment. I had to switch to Google to find a media contact form. Press releases have no phone numbers. All that design and brand journalism prowess is wasted if you make it impossible for journalists to reach you.

As for those “bizarre robots,” how long before they replace all of us writers—to say nothing of PR pros who rely on contact forms (and the occasional energy drink)?

15 Sarasota Museums and Tourist Attractions You’ll Love

Florida is famous for its theme parks but there’s lots more to do in this photogenic region. For example, there are some fantastic Sarasota museums that you really shouldn’t miss. It’s no surprise that the county is known as Florida’s Cultural Coast®. We’ve rounded up our favourite tourist attractions in Sarasota County for young and old.

Sarasota Museums

The Ringling

The Ringling is the State Art Museum of Florida and an exceptional cultural and educational centre. It’s the legacy of John and Mable Ringling and located within the 66 acre grounds of their Winter estate. John Ringling was the founder of the Ringling Bros. circus and later became the co-owner of the Barnum & Bailey Circus. The Ringling has an interactive Circus Museum and the miniature 44,000 piece Howard Bros. circus model. There’s also a pink Renaissance style Museum of Art, commissioned by John Ringling. It has an impressive collection of European paintings and Asian art, as well as temporary outdoor sculptures by artists such as Ai Wei Wei.

Visitors should not miss Ca’ d’ Zan, the former home of John and Mable Ringling. The name means House of John in the Venetian dialect and the decor was inspired by their frequent trips to Italy. Next to it, you’ll find Mable Ringling’s pride and joy, her Rose Garden. It’s the oldest rose garden in continual use in Florida and dates from 1913.

The Ringling has many other treasures including the 18th century Asolo Theater from Italy and the new Kotler-Coville Glass Pavilion.

Opening hours: 10 am to 5 pm daily, until 8 pm on Thursdays. Closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day

Sarasota Classic Car Museum

There’s a wonderful selection of cars at the Sarasota Classic Car Museum, representing 100 years of automobile history. It’s the second oldest continually operating antique car museum in the United States. The collection features well known cars belonging to stars including John Lennon’s 1965 Mercedes Benz and Paul McCartney’s Mini Cooper. You can also see the Rolls Royce cars that belonged to John and Mable Ringling as well as many rotating exhibits.

Opening hours: 9 am to 6 pm, Monday to Sunday. Closed on Christmas Day.

Art Center Sarasota

With four galleries, Art Center Sarasota provides creative opportunities to the whole community. They run youth programs including Creative Kids Saturday Classes and the Creative Kids Summer Art Camp. The exhibitions focus on local and regional art, showcasing many emerging and established talents.

Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium

This iconic Sarasota museum plays an important role in wildlife conservation. Mote Marine has helped to rehabilitate many injured sea creatures such as manatees and turtles. In fact, they hold regular turtle spotting walks at a nearby beach in season. The Washed Ashore art exhibit features sharks and turtles made from plastic and other debris, in order to educate visitors on how to keep rubbish out of the ocean.

Mote scientists are leading 25 research programs including finding new ways to restore coral reefs. They’re also training local diver and snorkeler volunteers as part of their BleachWatch program to detect bleaching on coral, an early warning sign of damage.

There are over 100 species of fish and marine animals at Mote, as well as a 135,000 gallon shark habitat. Visitors can see inside some of the working labs such as the Seahorse Conservation Laboratory, through glass walls. Staff and volunteers are also on hand to answer your questions.

Crowley Museum & Nature Center

A great place to discover more about pioneer history, Crowley Museum & Nature Center is fun for all the family. There’s a half-mile boardwalk which leads visitors through 5 different Florida habitats and a two story observation tower overlooking the Myakka river. The Children’s Discovery Path has five interactive stations with fun activities to get involved in. The museum itself houses some interesting pioneer artefacts and there’s also a sugar cane mill and a birding trail.

Opening hours: 10 am to 5 pm in fair weather, from Saturday to Sunday

Historic Spanish Point

Spread over 30 acres, Historic Spanish Point is a fascinating insight into Floridian pre-history. Its one of the largest intact archaeological sites on the Gulf Coast from the prehistoric period. The Window to the Past exhibition is the only place in the United States where you can go inside a prehistoric shell midden or mound.

There’s also one of the largest butterfly gardens in Florida and many different natural habitats, with over 50% of the county’s native plants being represented here. Chicago socialite Bertha Palmer established a homestead here in 1910 and you can visit three of her gardens.

Opening hours: 9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Saturday and 12 – 5 pm on Sundays

Save our Seabirds

Housing over 120 birds in their 3 acre site, Save our Seabirds aims to rehabilitate injured birds and to educate the public on how to minimize environmental risks to them. Their Birdwalk shows visitors how each species has adapted to its natural environment, and the Wild Bird Learning Center has some interesting educational displays.

Marietta Museum of Art & Whimsy

This colourful museum features quirky paintings and sculptures galore, as well as a tranquil garden. The Marietta Museum of Art & Whimsy is the passion project of local artist Marietta Lee. Some of her works are exhibited here as well as those of many other unique artists. What makes this place so special is the warm welcome that the volunteers give to visitors. They’ll provide you with as much or as little information as you want on the artworks.

Marietta herself is often at the museum to lend a hand. Even the restrooms here are works of art. There’s no café or gift shop but there is a kitchen manned by volunteers which gives you complimentary cookies and soft drinks. As entrance to the museum is free, donations are greatly appreciated.

The Ringling College of Art + Design

With over 50 exhibitions each year, all of which are free, the Ringling College of Art + Design is a key fixture on the Sarasota arts scene. Since opening more than 85 years ago, it’s helped students to develop their creative skills. These days its renowned for its computer animation programs.

Venice Museum & Archives

Housed in Triangle Inn which dates from 1927 the Venice Museum & Archives has a vast collection of over 30,000 objects and photographs. There are some interesting exhibits including a giant Megalodon shark and one on auto racing in Venice from 1953 to 1960.

Opening hours: 10 am to 4 pm from Monday to Wednesday, and 11 am to 3 pm on the 1st and 3rd Saturday from October to April

Sarasota Tourist Attractions

The Children’s Garden

One of the most popular things to do in Sarasota with kids is to visit The Children’s Garden. There are fun storybook readings and many other activities like weekly art and gardening classes. A maze, pirate ship, secret garden, tree fort and three little pigs’ house are just some of the attractions.

Unconditional Surrender

This huge statue by Seward Johnson commemorates the end of the Second World War and is said to be inspired by a photograph by Victor Jorgensen. The original bronze statue was created in 2005 with the help of computer technology and damaged by a car in 2012. It was replaced by the current statue in 2013.

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens

With a magnificent setting on the shores of Sarasota Bay, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is one of the most popular Sarasota attractions. Voted among the top places to visit in Sarasota by TripAdvisor, it’s the only botanical garden in the world specialized in the study and display of epiphytes. If you’re wondering what epiphytes are, they’re plants that grow on other plants. Orchids, moss and many ferns are some of the best known examples. There’s a charming tea room and a gift shop as well as 15 acres of exotic flowers and plants to admire.

The children’s rainforest garden has a rope bridge, outdoor musical instruments and play area. The museum itself has some interesting temporary exhibitions, including Warhol: Flowers in the Factory, celebrating the role of nature in Andy Warhol’s art.

Sarasota Jungle Gardens

Feeding flamingos by hand and talking to the resident parrots are just two of the fun things to do at Sarasota Jungle Gardens. There’s an interesting shell museum, a gift shop and café in their 10 acre grounds.

Saraosota Opera

Sarasota Opera one of the foremost opera companies in the United States, celebrating its 58th season. The building dates from the 1920s and was formerly the Edwards Theatre, once playing host to Elvis Presley. It’s since been extensively renovated and is open to the public for tours – a fascinating behind the scenes experience.

Tour opening hours: Mondays when the opera is in season, at 10.30 am
