Margaret, Mustique & me

She and her late husband turned the island of Mustique into a paradise for the rich and famous, including Mick Jagger, David Bowie and many a royal family member – so it’s safe to say that Lady Anne Glenconner has more than her share of stories to tell. The 88-year-old delighted royal enthusiasts with her bestsellling 2019 memoir and she admits writing the tome opened up some thrilling opportunities.

“My life is so full of surprises and adventures since writing Lady in Waiting,” Glenconner tells WHO.

One of those is writing her first work of fiction, Murder on Mustique, a gripping murder mystery that she says was “inspired by” Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple series. “I’ve always loved reading murder mysteries, so after the success of my memoir Lady in Waiting, this seemed like the obvious next step,” she explains of the book. “It made sense to set the novel in a place I know well, so Mustique was the perfect choice. I wanted to whisk readers away somewhere exotic they might not have had a chance to visit in real life.”

The private island in the Caribbean is a place that holds many dear memories for Glenconner. The author, who was a maid of honour at the Queen’s Coronation and later became lady-in-waiting to Princess Margaret, would spend many a holiday enjoying the crystal clear waters with her close friend. “I have memories from every corner of the island,” she explains of the hotspot – often dubbed a “playground for millionaires”. “Princess Margaret and I used to swim up and down the bay. She would swim breaststroke and I would do an inelegant front crawl. We had the most wonderful long chats on those swims – once we started, we could talk about anything. You lose your inhibitions in the water and nobody can overhear you!”

Her close connection to the British royal family has also seen Glenconner feature in Season 3 of The Crown, where she’s played by actress Nancy Carroll. “I met Nancy Carroll, who played me in the last [season], as she came to meet me for tea before she started the role,” the author tells. “She was absolutely charming – and I was delighted they had chosen her to play me as she was so pretty!”

While you can easily get lost in her dazzling life story, the same can be said for Glenconner’s fictional storytelling. So much so, you’d be correct in thinking the plot of her new novel had some elements of truth to it.

“I have vivid memories of Mustique, and I know the island inside out, so I wanted to do justice to the atmosphere and setting, and include details that only I know,” she says of taking a trip down memory lane for inspiration.

Captivating, suspenseful and endlessly entertaining, Murder on Mustique follows the mystery disappearance of American heiress Amanda Fortini on the island, and Detective Sergeant Wilton and the island’s owner Lady Veronica’s search for a killer. And while it’s only just been released, Glenconner is already itching to tell the next story. “I’m planning another novel featuring the same lead characters, as I’ve loved spending time with them and hope readers will, too,” she tells WHO. “The setting may be different next time – watch this space …”

At the ripe age of 88, it seems the Norfolk-based socialite has found her calling in telling tales. “In many ways I’m happier now … than I’ve ever been,” she adds.

ISLAND MEMORIES

While her husband, the late Lord Glenconner, passed on his entire fortune to an employee upon his death in 2010, Lady Glenconner still visits Mustique regularly. “I’m very lucky that I have a great friend who lives there,” she tells.

Alexandra stands off to the side after laying out the food on the dining table, sighing softly to herself as she fondly watches you greet friends and family members you haven’t seen in a while. A small cupcake with a lit candle is placed in front of you. You plaster a smile on your face in thanks to the waiters. “Happy birthday!” they start to sing, like you haven’t heard it from the last three restaurants Crispin dragged you to and even from a few stores that offer free birthday gifts for celebrants. Like any sane person, you awkwardly sit through the song, struggling to keep your flustered expression at bay. All you’re thinking about is how you’re going to break Crispin’s phone if he doesn’t delete all the embarrassing videos he’s taken of you within the whole day. With every singsong ‘Happy birthday’ that you hear, your murderous thoughts only worsen for Crispin and his phone.

A round cake, with a pit in the middle, iced in a chunky white crumb coat, and decorated with assorted sprinkles and your favorite candies sits in the middle of you both. Written in colorful icing are little greeting messages from himself, Crispin, Hank, and the Treses. Without a doubt, you know he spent all night making the cake on top of putting together the whole picnic basket. Your heart swells, and you coo out loud without meaning to.

It seems Basilio mistook your cooing at his thoughtfulness for a form of mockery for his obvious lack of baking experience as he blushes and huffs. “Don’t judge! Oo na, deins ako cakerist. (I’m not a ‘cakerist’.)”

Your friends thought it was a good idea to throw you a little surprise party, and seeing as you had no idea who their guest list was comprised of, you would just keep getting surprised whenever anyone else made their way through the front doors. Just when you thought there would be no more guests since it’s been halfway through the party, the doorbell rang and there stood a disheveled looking Tapia, already embarrassed at having been late for your birthday. But you gave it no thought as you launched yourself onto him. “Mr. Sergeant Tapia, sir! You’re here!”

He laughed before handing you your gifts. A plushie of your favorite animal and a bouquet of flowers. You couldn’t help but let your face morph in awe and overwhelming sensations of gratitude. “Aww! Thank you, I love them!”

Later on, he gave you a follow-up gift in private, instructing you to open it when you get home. Inside the envelope were a bunch of ‘Open When’ notes, and your first instinct was to call him, whining into the microphone.

That morning, he’d been the first to greet you, and since he couldn’t decide what to get you for a gift, he thought: Why not let you decide for yourself? and handed you his black card.

You initially declined, telling him he was insane for letting you borrow his card, but he repeatedly reassured you that it was fine. If you wanted to go browse for clothes for an extended amount of time, go to the spa for a self-care treat for both you and him, finally buy that book you’ve been wanting, get a restock on the art materials you recently ran out of, or even just do your groceries, he’d simply follow you and egg you on, encouraging you to spend more for yourself because you deserve the treat.

He’d laughed at you when you pulled up a dress shirt and bought it for him, suggesting that the color brought out his eyes or something along the lines of that, because of course you’d bring him into consideration during a shopping spree meant for you.

You made it to the Airbnb right in the middle of the afternoon—the perfect time to explore the area, nearby waters, and landmarks. After the day’s adventures, your friends lead you to an open bar along the beach to finally and properly celebrate your birthday.

Flashes of their phone cameras were all you could see as you made a wish and blew out the sparklers with cheers and random greetings piping up from all around the bar. Maliksi had his arm protectively wrapped around your shoulder, and you giddily clung onto his limb as your friends toasted to your birth, grateful for the trip he dragged you all along to.

Citizen Commendable Action Coin Issued To Four Patriot Elementary School Teachers

Chief David Newlan introduced the ‘Citizen Commendable Action Coin’ wanting to recognize citizens that go above and beyond. The recipient is presented with the coin along with a card that reads: “Thank You For Your Commendable Action. On behalf of the Cape Coral Police Department, please accept this Challenge Coin in appreciation of your positive actions that make this community GREAT! The Citizen Commendable Action Challenge Coin is given by an Officer of the Cape Coral Police Department to a civilian that performs an extraordinary act(s) or in the recognition of exemplary behavior.”

On September 25, 2020, SRO Hamilton-Reyes alerted Cape Coral Police Dispatch that she needed medical help immediately at her assigned school: Patriot Elementary. Several individuals were aiding an unconscious 4th grade child that was clearly suffering a medical episode. The child was choking.

SRO Hamilton-Reyes explained she heard over the radio teachers needed immediate assistance in the cafeteria. As she made her way into the cafe, she noticed a teacher, Laurie Mastro, trying to administer the Heimlich maneuver on a choking student. SRO Hamilton-Reyes jumped in and administered the Heimlich until the student got out a chunk of sandwich and appeared to start vomiting. The clinic assistant Narays Tapia and SRO Hamilton-Reyes began giving back thrusts to the student as he clearly had not gotten all of the food out. SRO Hamilton-Reyes stepped off to the side to call for EMS. At that time, SRO Hamilton-Reyes saw Narays Tapia began the Heimlich again. SRO Hamilton-Reyes grabbed the student and started the Heimlich until she had exhausted her attempts. SRO Hamilton-Reyes directed the school Assistant Principal Steven Lew to take over with the Heimlich. He did so until he was exhausted, then switched to the building supervisor Ronn VanDeventer. Steven Lew and Ronn VanDeventer continued switching off and on administering the Heimlich while Narays Tapia and SRO Hamilton-Reyes were trying to help hold the student up. The whole team continued to work together to provide first aid to the child. The child remained unconscious until medics arrived and were able to remove a piece of chicken from his throat with forceps.

Sergeant Angela Fleming arrived at Patriot Elementary School. Sgt. Fleming saw the determination and dedication of the school staff in saving this child's life by providing first aid to keep the child alive until emergency medical services arrived and were able to revive the child. The child regained consciousness and was able to speak briefly prior to being transported. The child was transported to Golisano Children's Hospital where he was admitted to the ICU. He was released on September 28th , 2020.

Without the quick thinking and actions taken by the school staff, the student might have died. The school staff went above and beyond their normal duties to help save their student’s life. Ronn VanDeventer, Steven Lew, and Laurie Mastro, and Narays Tapia (not pictured below) were given a Citizen Commendable Action Coin due to their exemplary behavior.

'El Chucky', 'The Sergeant' & 'The Bull' - the youngsters to watch at the World Cup

We already know about the superstars who could light up the 2018 Fifa World Cup, but what about the next generation of talent?

Few of the 736 players who could feature in Russia can be classed as total unknowns but there will still be some unfamiliar faces looking to announce themselves on the global stage.

Here, BBC Sport’s TV and radio World Cup commentators pick out the 15 young players from outside the Premier League who are worth watching out for this summer.

1. Hirving Lozano (Mexico)

Age: 22 Position: Winger Club: PSV Eindhoven (Netherlands)

Steve Wilson: With 19 goals and 11 assists in 34 games, Lozano’s statistics in PSV’s Eredivisie-winning season – his first campaign in Europe – show the potential he showed at Pachuca is now being fully realised.

Having played his way into Mexico’s Confederations Cup team last summer, he scored in a 2-1 win over Russia before the semi-final defeat by Germany. His brace in a 3-3 draw in Belgium in November was another headline-grabbing performance from a forward who can play on the right or left of a central striker.

Jonathan Pearce: Lozano is a brilliant, fiery prospect and could well light up these finals – he has searing pace and loves to roll in off the left to score with his favoured right foot.

As well as his goals at club level, he has seven strikes in 27 senior internationals for Mexico, which is a good return for a young player.

There’s a catch – he was sent off twice for PSV this season and for Mexico at the 2016 Olympics – but he seems determined to make an impact one way or another.

2. Cristian Pavon (Argentina)

Age: 22 Position: Winger Club: Boca Juniors (Argentina)

Guy Mowbray: With such a stellar list of names ahead of him in the Argentina side, the Boca Juniors prospect might not get any game time in Russia – but if he does get off the bench it’s a chance to show he will soon belong in the best company.

Pavon looks set for a move to Benfica, following the European path trodden by Angel di Maria – an obvious player for comparison, and one who might soon make way for the young pretender.

3. Aleksei Miranchuk (Russia)

Age: 22 Position: Attacking midfielder Club: Lokomotiv Moscow (Russia)

Conor McNamara: I am commentating on the opening game of the World Cup, so I’ve been keeping a close eye on Russia’s build-up. There is a lot of pressure on the hosts, who will be hoping Miranchuk steps up as one of the stars. He could be their creative inspiration.

Steve Wilson: Russia are desperate for someone to galvanise the team to at least a respectable showing as hosts.

That someone may yet be the long-lauded Aleksandr Golovin, who went to Euro 2016 with great expectations that seemed only to prove a burden – or it may be the slightly older Miranchuk, who has just helped Lokomotiv win the Russian title along with twin brother Anton, who is also in the squad.

An attacking midfielder with an eye for goal, Aleksei has developed well since his brief appearance in last summer’s Confederations Cup.

4. Breel Embolo (Switzerland)

Age: 21 Position: Striker Club: Schalke 04 (Germany)

Ian Dennis: I first saw Embolo play four years ago when his FC Basel side beat Liverpool in the Champions League. As a teenager, he was raw but had electrifying pace to trouble defenders.

He left Switzerland in the summer of 2016 to move to Schalke but an ankle injury that October ended his first season in Germany prematurely.

Embolo still needs to add goals to his game but he’s a powerful striker and still only 21.

5. Renato Tapia, Peru

Age: 22 Position: Midfielder, centre-half, right-back Club: Feyenoord (Netherlands)

Radio 5 live football correspondent John Murray: Renato Tapia is a rising star, and a versatile one too. He has been schooled in Dutch football since he moved to Europe to join FC Twente in 2013 and is now at Feyenoord. Despite his age, he is an important part of a Peru team going to the World Cup with form and confidence – and is viewed as a future captain of Los Incas.

6. Sardar Azmoun (Iran)

Age: 23 Position: Striker Club: Rubin Kazan (Russia)

Alistair Bruce-Ball: Azmoun scored 11 goals in 14 games in qualifying and has a fantastic strike rate of 23 goals in 32 international appearances.

Iran are very good defensively – Carlos Queiroz’s side kept nine consecutive clean sheets in their final round of qualification games – but, if they’re going to progress in Russia, they will have to score with the few chances that come their way. A lot of that will be down to Azmoun.

7. Achraf Hakimi (Morocco)

Age: 19 Position: Full-back Club: Real Madrid (Spain)

Steve Wilson: At 19, Hakimi already has winner’s medals from the Club World Cup and Champions League. He played at right-back in both Real’s matches against Spurs in the latter competition this season – and made 17 first-team appearances in all – but may start at left-back for Morocco in Russia.

Former Real boss Zinedine Zidane liked him so much he was happy to sell Brazil international Danilo to Manchester City. Enough said.

8. Andre Silva (Portugal)

Age: 22 Position: Striker Club: AC Milan (Italy)

Conor McNamara: Silva is still finding his way at AC Milan and was mainly used as a substitute last season in Serie A, but he was given more of a chance in the Europa League and scored six goals in eight starts in that competition in 2017-18.

So far in his international career he has averaged a goal every three shots, and apparently Wolves and Huddersfield are interested in bringing him to the Premier League next season.

Wherever he ends up playing his club football, Cristiano Ronaldo has already said Silva can be his long-term successor as Portugal’s main goalscorer.

9. Rodrigo Bentancur, Uruguay

Age: 20 Position: Midfielder Club: Juventus (Italy)

John Murray: Good things are expected of this tall, two-footed midfielder who has just finished his first season with Juventus and only made his senior international debut in October 2017.

I’m expecting Uruguay to do well and, if they do, Bentancur could well get his chance to shine.

10. Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Iran

Age: 24 Position: Striker Club: AZ Alkmaar (Netherlands)

Guy Mowbray: It would be a surprise if Carlos Queiroz can guide Iran out of the group stage above either Spain or his native Portugal, but in AZ striker Alireza Jahanbakhsh he has a player of quality who’s being linked with a move to the Premier League.

Sure, the Eredivisie isn’t the top level these days, but to finish as top scorer is still no mean feat – he’s following some major players to the honour.

A goal against one or both of the big guns in Group B might not get Iran through to the last 16, but it might get his Dutch club side a few more million euros later this summer.

11. Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Serbia

Age: 23 Position: Midfielder Club: Lazio (Italy)

Steve Wilson: Born in Spain, Milinkovic-Savic has been a great success for Lazio – scoring 14 goals from midfield last season – and is reported to be on Manchester United’s shopping list.

The 23-year-old has won both the Under-20 World Cup and the Under-19 European Championship with his country and is vying with Andrija Zivkovic of Benfica for the title of Serbia’s brightest young thing.

Alistair Bruce-Ball: He only has three caps for his country because the former manager Slavoljub Muslin didn’t pick him, much to the chagrin of the Serbian fans. Russia could be his chance to shine.

12. Youri Tielemans, Belgium

Age: 23 Position: Midfielder Club: Monaco (France)

Ian Dennis: This 21-year-old midfielder might go under the radar behind Belgium’s big names, only four appearances in qualifying but has clearly been noticed by a lot of scouts.

I watched him play against Manchester United in the Europa League last year, when he was being tracked by Premier League clubs prior to his move to Monaco from Anderlecht. It is easy to see why – he has all the attributes, technique, vision and provides real drive from midfield.

13. Ismaila Sarr, Senegal

Age: 20 Position: Forward Club: Rennes (France)

Steve Wilson: A left-sided attacker who is drawing inevitable comparisons to countryman Sadio Mane, Sarr has fought back well from a serious tendon injury in September 2017 to make the £15m Rennes paid Metz for him look like money well spent.

Sarr chose Rennes and regular football ahead of a move to Barcelona, which must have been a tough but level-headed choice. If he does as well as many expect in Russia, then another queue for his signature will be forming.

14. Uros Spajic, Serbia

Age: 25 Position: Centre-back Club: Krasnodar (Russia)

Ian Dennis: Spajic turned 25 this year so is a little older than most on this list, but remains an excellent prospect and I was surprised he recently headed east – he’s just signed for Russian side Krasnodar for 7m euros from Belgian side Anderlecht.

A dependable, brave centre-back who is good in the air, he is a player who is alert to danger and also happy to put his body on the line.

15. Maxi Gomez, Uruguay

Age: 21 Position: Striker Club: Celta Vigo (Spain)

Steve Wilson: With Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez around, getting playing time for Uruguay is going to be the problem for Gomez, who has been a huge success in his first season in Europe with Celta Vigo.

Florent Ahmed Groberg (born May 8, 1983) served in the U.S. Army during the War in Afghanistan, where in August 2012, he was severely injured attempting to thwart a suicide bomber. On November 12, 2015, Groberg received the Medal of Honor for his heroic action in Afghanistan. Born in France to an American father and French-Algerian mother, he became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2001.

Sergeant Rafael Peralta (April 7, 1979 – November 15, 2004) Peralta led his team through three house-clearings before charging into the fourth house. After finding two rooms empty on the ground floor he opened a third door and was hit multiple times with AK-47 fire, leaving him severely wounded. The insurgents threw a hand grenade at the Marines, and the two Marines with Peralta tried to get out of the room but could not. Still conscious on the floor, despite his wounds Peralta reportedly pulled the grenade under his body (absorbing most of the blast and shrapnel). He died instantly, but saved the lives of his fellow Marines. In September 2008 his family was notified that he was awarded the Navy Cross, the second-highest award a United States Marine can receive. Peralta was born on April 7, 1979 in Mexico City. The son of Rafael and Rosa Peralta and the oldest of four (his siblings are Icela, Karen, and Ricardo), he emigrated to the United States.

Leroy Arthur Petry (born 29 July 1979). On 26 May 2008 during his seventh deployment, Petry was a member of a team on a mission to capture a Taliban target in Paktia Province. Despite being wounded in both legs by gunfire, Petry continued to fight and give orders. When a grenade landed between him and two other soldiers, Petry grabbed it and attempted to throw it away from them. He saved the soldiers' lives but the grenade exploded, severing his right hand. Petry became the second recent living recipient of the Congressonal Medal of Honor for the war in Afghanistan in 2011. Leroy Petry was born on 29 July 1979, in Santa Fe, New Mexico,[1] to Larry and Lorella (Tapia) Petry, of Mexican American descent.

Salvatore Augustine "Sal" Giunta (/ˌsælvəˈtɔːreɪ ˈdʒʊntə/; born January 21, 1985) is a former United States Army soldier and the first living person since the Vietnam War to receive the U.S. military's highest decoration for valor, the Medal of Honor. He was the first in his immediate family to serve in the armed forces since his grandparents emigrated from Italy.

Michael Anthony Monsoor (April 5, 1981 – September 29, 2006) was a United States Navy SEAL. On September 29, 2006, an insurgent threw a grenade onto a rooftop where Monsoor and several other SEALs and Iraqi soldiers were positioned. Monsoor quickly smothered the grenade with his body, absorbing the resulting explosion and saving his comrades from serious injury or death. Monsoor died about 30 minutes later from serious wounds caused by the grenade explosion.On March 31, 2008, the United States Department of Defense confirmed that Michael Monsoor would posthumously receive the Medal of Honor. U.S. President George W. Bush presented the medal to Monsoor's parents on April 8, 2008. His father also served in the United States military as a Marine.[3] His father is of Lebanese and Irish descent.

King attended Northwest Missouri State University from 1967 to 1970, and was a member of the Alpha Kappa Lambda Fraternity,[5] majoring in math and biology.[1] He did not graduate. Congressman King avoided the draft with "2S" deferments in 1967, 1968 and 1969. Because he had been receiving deferments under the old draft system, King was still shielded from being drafted in the lottery system as long as he maintained his deferments and stayed in school.
