Playing with dolls

“I’ve only had MiniBeni for a day and a half but if anything happened to her...”

So, an artist friend of mine was struggling with a pose and I offered to try using my Shibuki Jun dolls to make a reference photo for her. Well, now that I’ve taken them out of their display case, might as well take some better pictures about these dolls’ articulation and accessories than the cruddy photos I took back in 2016 with my bad camera.

When I bought these dolls, I was worried they’d have stiff Barbie limbs. I was happy to discover that they’re actually relatively well articulated. I mean, look, they have knees and elbows and wrists. But something doesn’t feel right...

There. Fixed it.

I was expecting the dolls to have feet that just pop off to change shoes, Bratz style, since several of them have boots and other shoes that look like difficult to put on. But no, instead they have articulated ankle. I have not yet seen an articulation like this in a doll, it’s nice that they can also be displayed barefoot.

Speaking of shoes, this is what Francis’s boots look like under the red cover.

One thing I wish they had articulated but didn’t is the neck. The dolls can’t turn their heads, always staring right forwards. I wanted to pose this one in that one pose they often do during kuroenbi, where the otokoyaku kneel and touch their shoulder, also turning their head to look at said shoulder. Though even if the neck was articulate, I wouldn’t be quite capable of making that pose since the elbow joint only bends up to 90 degree angle, so there are limitations to what you can do with the arms.

When I was undressing the dolls for science, I discovered that Sky has a random silver band on his left arm. I wonder what that’s for. Sky’s arms are more loose that the other dolls’, they pop off from the elbow easily. Unfortunately his hair is really messy. I wish I had skills in doll care and customizing so I could tame it a little. Though it is quite fitting, Shibuki Jun did occasionally have some pretty wild hairdos. 

Sky has a lot of small accessories. I like the scarf, which unfortunately is not very visible when you put his jacket back on. I tried several times very patiently to make him wear the sunglasses, but this accessory is unfortunately just a little too big to actually stay in place (maybe mine has a bad pair and other dolls are more successful in wearing theirs). I know the hat is supposed to probably be a fedora, but to me it looks more like those floppy-rimmed sun hats old ladies and fishermen wear.

Francis and Emilio both have cross pendants. I adore the lace on Emilio’s sleeves and his fancy cape, but I wish he could have had a better sword. I mean, that’s just a sword shape cut from fake leather. Certainly whatever toy producer manufactured these could have recycled a plastic sword from some other toyline of theirs. Though I suppose swords are more likely to come in tiny sizes fit for action figures, not big enough to fit Barbie sized dolls. Sexism, goddamnit, let the girl oriented toylines have swordfighters too!

Finally, one more pic of my favourite, Francis, and his cool velvet coat. This demonstrates one problem all of these dolls have - the sleeves of their coats are too long, covering their hands completely. The left sleeve of Francis’s coat ends in a “glove” with a pretty red cross on it, but getting this to actually stay on his hand is bothersome. The sleeve is too long and the glove keeps slipping off, I have to keep tucking the sleeve back. I love Francis’s hip scarf, rose decorated coat and his luxurious curly hair. This is the doll I wanted, but they were sold as a set so I got them all.

As far as fan merch goes, I think these dolls are pretty cool. Wish we’d see more imaginative fan items for sale.

The wonderful opening for the series of shinsengumi show “The spirit of the samurai”.

Strong,dynamic,powerful,fierceness and very effective athmosphere permeates the whole show.

UNSTOPPABLENESS

Here we have no more the young unexperienced Mariko the Journalist in “The Apollon Mistery”,neither the Ethereal blonde Tod,or the romantic goofy Edmond in “The Story of a sword love and a raimbow”.

Here she is just the strong sienne at the turning point of her carreer,unstoppable. Surrounded by a glorious cast that included Tsukikage Hitomi,the wonderful lady called Gunchan,who in contrast had the pure and beautiful attitude that just complemented this Mariko,a great and comedian born Minoru Kou,an always very dramatic Bunchan,and her deaths that never miss in this ‘90s period,and snaky great show stealer Rika Shibuki Jun,who you have never enough of.

This opening is pure energy charge,certainly one of the strongest in zuka,where Hoshigumi just shows everyone why they were just all bosses

P.S. Beware of this Mariko the-seppuku-giver;you are not enough for her...or you are just too much to handle so SEPPUKU is the only way you can escape her!

This show will be revived by great Daimon with top musu Maaya Kiho. soon in 2018
