“I have no idea where this CD came from. I had assumed it was my wife’s, but she assures me it’s not. I either picked it up cheap at a charity shop or most likely it was left in the house by one of my tenants when I was living abroad in Amsterdam for a few years. . The track listing is probably what enticed me to keep it, though I don’t think I’ve ever listened to it before now. It’s a 1991 compilation from Polygram featuring new wave, gothic rock from the 80s and 1990. Really, this should be my era of pop music. I hit my teenage years in 1986, although for the rest of that decade I was discovering Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Genesis and David Bowie. I was only vaguely aware at the time of the likes of Siouxie and the Banshees, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Jesus and Mary Chain and Depeche Mode, just some of the artists featured on this comp. I do however clearly recall seeing Golden Brown by The Stranglers performed on Top Of The Pops. We had only recently acquired a television as a family (a small portable black and white) and generally weren’t allowed to watch something so outrageously depraved or indeed, popular. So it was quite a shock seeing actual rock and roll, albeit a particular gentle and harmonic version of it. . The Stranglers are also on here with European Female, along with a host of other excellent artists and tracks: The Cure, The Mission, who I do remember hearing in the school playground, The Psychedelic Furs and The Damned.
