#so that he could get landon's phoenix powers back for his own protection
Text
Maybe I’m in denial over the whole Landon melting thing, but I was just thinking... instead of Landon’s body literally dissolving, what if that was just a cruel and dramatic way of showing Landon’s body being sucked into a portal, which was created inside his body from Malivore mud inside him? That would make more sense imo. I still don’t know what we’re supposed to believe about the whole situation since the writers never made anything clear, but I’d always figured the mud from the Malivore pit in the crypt went inside Landon. I have a headcanon that, once Malivore was out of Landon’s body after they were all sent to the prison world, he obviously wanted to get Landon back to possess him again. And could sense when both Landon and Hope went into the pit in the prison world. He obviously wanted to spit Hope out while keeping Landon in his dimension at the same time. But because of how tightly Hope and Landon were holding onto each other, he failed in separating them. All he managed to do was get some of his mud inside Landon (from the pit on the other side in the real world) in an attempt to try to pull Landon back into his dimension. And it was that mud that reacted to Hope’s blood, turning into a portal while still inside Landon’s body, and disappearing (with Landon) much like the portal in 1x16 did. I think that mud becoming a portal inside Landon and Landon being pulled into it would make much more sense than Landon’s body literally melting. Or if not that, then Landon’s body just reacted with the Malivore mud inside him when Hope’s blood was affecting it, if the mud was compatible with his body and bound itself to him since he was the vessel or something idk. I just will never believe that Landon’s body melted into mud, because it’s completely ridiculous and he was never made of mud, his body was like a human’s.
And I’ll also never believe that Hope was ever really toxic to Landon. I think it would make sense if Hope was toxic to just Malilandon/any Malivore mud inside Landon, but not Landon himself (though it could still obviously affect Landon’s body like in 3x04). Because Landon being partly human and having a basically human body and not being made from Malivore mud should have been enough to make it so Hope’s blood couldn’t hurt him. Malivore wanted his vessel to not have the weaknesses he did, he wanted a vessel that wasn’t like him, so that shouldn’t have been an issue. Landon on his own should’ve been safe, but maybe Landon with Malivore/Malivore mud inside him wouldn’t be. Maybe Landon having a human body wasn’t enough to protect Malivore from Hope’s blood if he was possessing Landon. Maybe he needed his phoenix powers for that to be possible, that his powers would provide that protection. (And surely one of the reasons why Malivore made him a phoenix was for extra protection from any possible threats or loopholes.) Of course the absence of Landon’s phoenix powers took that protection away, making Malivore/Malivore mud vulnerable to Hope’s blood while inside Landon’s body, and therefore Landon as well. Which is why Hope’s blood could affect Landon with Malivore mud in him in 3x04, and ultimately with Malivore in him in 4x04. But had Landon had his phoenix powers, Hope’s blood wouldn’t have had any effect. And even if Landon came back from limbo without his phoenix powers, her blood still wouldn't have any effect on just him. There would definitely be no possibility of her blood ever hurting him again with Malivore gone and no part of him ever able to get inside Landon again. This is all just my headcanon anyway, since nothing else really makes sense to me.

Forgive me for writing everything on this profile, but when I start, I don't know where I will end. It's more or less that the Phoenix powers work when Landon is in a good emotional state or when it is about good intentions, not showing that you know something more because you want to be useful. Maybe that's why he lost the Phoenix powers because he was subconsciously not in the right place emotionally, after all, Rafae is probably the first person who made him feel loved and who cared for and was protective of him. Well Hope it was a crush without believing that any of it would not pass and turned into reciprocal love. And even more so now that Malivore has taken over, he may not even want to be a Phoenix to protect others. I figured if I had to match Malivore's behavior with a character from this world, I would choose Mikael or Landon's adoptive fathers. I mean, they want a family, but only at their own imagination, if something does not suit them, they destroy it. You don't really know what will please Malivore if he doesn't understand what loving and family really mean. When the power of the Phoenix comes back, I hope that the tears of the Phoenix will have a meaning in conjunction with Hope if the creators follow the beaten path. Because I really don't want Hope to think that she is cursed and her love is a death sentence and not something beautiful that gives strength to both those involved. Or that you are born only to die or become possessed and destroyed, although the only "bad" thing you did in life was to be born in such and no other family. None of them deserved suffering, maybe they do stupid things sometimes, but they are teenagers who do not fully embrace the world, especially with a past where there is no adequate support. They do not understand that sometimes it is a lie and ignorance, it is a blessing for them because the adults lie to them. Though sometimes it is strange that Landon still believes in people and does not believe in himself. Hope, on the other hand, believes in herself, but not in people. Simply put, they both add faith in the world and themselves and that it will be fine. Only scriptwriters would be able to disregard anti's single sentences out of context to please them. Well, I guess that's how it is everywhere.
It’s okay! I get that, haha. Oh gotcha, that’s a very interesting theory! It could be possible or have something to do with it. That’s a good point, that’s true about Raf, and Landon was very emotionally affected by what was happening to Raf when he realized he lost his powers. So there’s a chance there may have been some kind of connection. And yes, he’s definitely in an even worse state now because of Malivore.
And I never thought of that before, but you’re right! Yeah, Mikael was all about strength over weakness. He despised Klaus, even before he knew he wasn’t his son, simply because he viewed him as weak. Similar to how Malivore did not want Clarke because Clarke was not the way he wanted him to be. They both rejected their children or only wanted them if they showed strength or power. I’m not sure about Landon’s foster parents, but they clearly did not want Landon or care about him with how they abused him. (I’m not even sure if it was multiple people who abused him or just one? They really need to tell us more about that.) True, Malivore doesn’t have an understanding of love or family, so having those things isn’t going to please him. It seems only power is going to please him, as of right now. And his desires have also been influenced by the fact that he was created with an insatiable need to consume, as well as the fact that Cleo inspired him to want a vessel, which both made him want revenge and to create his own powerful species. All of his actions stem from those things, right? So if he hadn’t been affected by all that, what would he truly want? What is he like without those things? Would he have still been evil? Idk.
Oh yes, same, I really want to see Landon have healing tears too, and for it to be revealed with Landon reacting to Hope somehow. And me too, it’s so important for Hope to know those things, and I really feel like she has realized those things this last season in a lot of ways. She’s no longer willing to believe that she and Landon are “doomed,” she believes they can fight against their fate. And she doesn’t want to activate her vampire side, and hasn’t willingly sacrificed herself to make that happen in order to kill Malivore. So I feel like she’s grown a lot and has started to see that she doesn’t have to give in to the idea that she’s cursed or meant to die and that her love isn’t a death sentence. And I hope they’ll go even further with that. And yes, they absolutely do not deserve suffering, especially when they’ve done nothing wrong, very true.
And that’s a really interesting point about the ways that Hope and Landon believe in others vs. themselves and how they’re flipped. Yeah, it makes sense for Hope, but it is strange for Landon to feel how he does about others after the way people have treated him throughout his life. It definitely shows that he has a very forgiving and optimistic outlook and tries to see the best in people. But I also feel like he was more similar to Hope at the start of the show, in that he had a harder time trusting people like she did. And he seemed to have more confidence in himself, he stood up for himself more. But then it’s like going to the school made him feel worse about himself. He went from surviving his whole life on his own and being able to rely on himself and being capable in that way to then being told that he’s weak and always needs to be saved (which contradicts his entire past and the fact that he had survived on his own) just because he doesn’t have the kind of supernatural abilities that everyone at the school deems as “useful.” So I feel like the way the people at the school treated him made him feel inadequate and that it had a very negative effect on him. So I think that’s probably why he doesn’t believe in himself? Though how he still believes in other people and is able to see the best in them, idk. But yes, exactly. I think Hope and Landon have been able to balance each other out more with Landon helping Hope to open up more to people and Hope helping Landon to know his value and that he’s not weak, but a survivor.
But yeah, I’ll never understand how the writers have sometimes ignored aspects of their own show and how they’ve written Handon (or just Landon) by throwing in a senseless line to please the antis. It’s happened too many times, and I hope it’ll stop in season 4.

On the rating of 10, how do you rate the writing of each legacies characters, why and who deserves better? What aspects should be improved?
I updated some of the opinion for clarity and also added Finch because I forgot her originally
I'll just make a list and go down it and I'm sorry in advance I love responding but I'm horrible at grammar/punctuation and also I might tend to ramble but I'll try to be as concise as possible. It should also be noted anything I state that might possibly relate to ships is a personal opinion and I have nothing against any ships/characters gay or straight/Good or Evil. However would it be said that I definitely mean more towards the gay/Badass with a Golden heart side of shipping with any fandom.
Hope Mikaelson- As of now I would rate her writing at about a 6. And I only say that because as we know a majority of her characters personality slightly has always but this season especially related to her relationship with Landon. And I wish we would see the Badass Tribrid Hope we've been promised since season 1 I mean sure there are no lack of examples of her bravery and martyrdom. But I am tired of her always feeling down on herself and like she's a cosmic mistake when it has literally been proven by Lizzie's wish in season 1 that their life would be infinitely shittier without her. What they can do to improve it is have her focus on friendship and herself instead of trying to always focus on Landon. She deserves more than just to be a boy obsessed character I mean she's the daughter of Klaus F****** Mikaelson for Pete sakes she literally descends from the most powerful supernatural family ever to exist and is rightfully the most powerful being on the f****** planet.
Note: I found Handon's relationship cutesy in season 1 but now not so much especially since they use him dying as a plot line way too often it just doesn't have the same effect that used to***
Josie Saltzman-As of now I would rate her writing at about an 8. I like how her character at least for a while had her own storyline going off the mystic falls High School plotline and how she lived with delena because it was a good call back for us TVD fans but I think it could have definitely lasted longer than a few episodes. We all know it was just used as a lot device to introduce Ethan as a series regular and as an introduction for her to Finch's character. But overall I feel throughout the seasons she has experienced at least some personal growth as exhibited even in 3x15 where she admitted she has to stop saying sorry especially to Lizzie for not always jumping to do what she needs / she wants all the time. Whereas before Android AU version aside because she literally had to do what she was programmed to do. She has an exhibited that she's starting to do what she needs to do for Josie before others most of the time or she's trying to. And as far as her relationship to Finch well I don't see them being endgame I have no problem with them and I do see Finch being one of her major loves of the series that teaches her whatever lesson she needs that leads her to whoever her endgame love is. With her relationships I will always miss Posie and I wish they could get Lulu back at least just for one episode. Also I feel these last two episodes of the girls being a trio they have a really Been serving Hosie with the looks but also I feel like in general Josie and Hope have been really in f****** tune. In conclusion I just don't know because Kaylee's acting skills and just turning general I would rate a billion she could choke me and I would literally thank her.
Lizzie Saltzman-as of now I would rate her at about a 7. I feel as if she has had great personal growth over the series and hell even this season. I also like hell despite everything in her life especially her eternal struggle with her mental illness she is always trying to do better and not just for herself but mainly for others and some people would say that's not good but I like it because it truly shows what she stated in 1x03 during the gargoyle incident that she never wants to be the bad or evil one. She has all this s*** thrown at her being called broken, being seen as the lesser than sister, and not to mention the absentee parents. Yet through all this she manages to only get stronger especially once she builds a genuine friendship with hope. However what I will say is that I don't like the regression of her friendship with Hope in correlation to her progress of especially her mental illness. And what I mean by that is it's almost been shown that once she had even the seeds of a true friendship with Hope that Hope would never give up on her hell not but like even an episode or two into their newly formed friendship in S1 Hope went to Josie when she Lizzie was on the verge of a bad episode and "sweet" Josie was basically like fuck her she needs to fall on her ass for once and Hope ass was appalled y'all she was like Lizzie can't control her brain chemistry and was so defensive/protective it's like once they got over that hurdle that mainly Josie gave them everything clicked into place and they were almost instant bff's. So for them to do so good in season 2 and then it seems like it showed especially in these last several episodes black magic incident to bring Landon back aside that Lizzie's old issues of resentment and jealousy towards hope are starting to come back and I don't like that because the more Lizzie had A Friend in Hope it seems like the better she got at coping and doing better mentally.(sorry if this has been a confusing several sentences). And no by that I do not mean that Lizzie is mental progress has solely relied on Hope but I do think it has helped significantly for her to have a true friend. Also let it be noted now out of every ship though I should Hosie too HIZZIE is my #1 ship on Legacies two phenomenally beautiful woman also the enemies to friends to lovers trope *chef's kiss*which might be plausible as I always wondered what they meant in the Hosie crush confession scene of season 1 when Josie said that she always went after everybody josie liked hinting that Lizzie might be at least bisexual or maybe that was just what Josie perceived at like 12/13 years old. Also on the note of relationships Mizzie was a cute concept at the beginning but I do love the fact that MG is finally finding himself and standing up for himself but he did also do it and I kind of a******-ish way towards Lizzie. And that's all I can say for her. Actually I could probably write a novel on this women and also Hizzie but I won't lol.
Alaric Saltzman- As of now I would give him a rating of like a 4 . In the last several episodes I think he's been trying to make progress at being a better person but that's about all I can say I'm not an anti. But he definitely will not be winning the father of the year award anytime soon and like many people have pointed out he was a great guardian to Elena and Jeremy so he has the potential in parenting he obviously just ain't using it or lost it over the decades. I don't hate him but I do believe they're doing a discredit towards the better man he was in The vampire Diaries especially at the beginning.
Landon Kirby-His writing is like a 3. He is just there to be arm candy for hope. Until the last couple episodes where he became this for once realistic not optimistic hardened badass he literally brought nothing to The season other than someone for Hope to obsess over. And to be someone that they repeatedly kill for shock value even though it literally shocks no one anymore. I don't hate his character but he doesn't tickle My Fancy as much anymore. His character has a lot of potentialy especially if they ever bring back in his Phoenix side and truly explore it beyond his almost endless ability to revive and being a "Bird Boy" lol. I mean truthfully they're doing him a disservice Aria is a phenomenal actor who could take his character places if they just let him be more than a basic ass plot device. Also can we talk about how gorgeous of a man Aria is especially in these last few episodes looking love it and fine as f***.
As it has become apparent to me I ramble too much and I just don't have the capacity as it is now almost 1:00 in the morning my time to do anymore characters in depth so I will be doing a simple excerpt for the rest now that I have done the main 5 people.
Kaleb Hawkins- His writing is a 8. I do like how he's coming to himself over the years and is a a right hand man to Alaric now instead of being just a uncontrollable vampire(the only hate on this part not towards Kaleb but Alaric is that it shows he will virtually mentor/uplift almost any teen that ain't his own daughters). Though in my opinion he always kind of had a point on some things especially about the hypocrisy of Alaric in season 1 especially on the bmood drinking thing. Him and Mg's relationship is awesome I'm glad they made up in the last episode and our brothers again. Also I was rooting for him and Cleo I think they would be a cute little couple. Also I need his backstory immediately especially after saying to Cleo the last time he was vulnerable he died I need to know how he turned.
Milton Greasley(MG)- His writing is a 9 the season. I say that because he is really came into his own and stopped being the punching bag. Though I think the idea or used to think at least that him and Lizzie would be cute together I am proud of him for standing up to Lizzie finally even though I liked him always being there for her I was tired of him being a fallback for her when it didn't work with whoever however I do think he could have went about the rejection a little bit gentler especially with how he knows of Lizzie's emotional problems. And don't even get me started on Alyssa that was just a disaster that should have never even been brought to fruition her cheating with Jed was probably the best thing that could have happened. I liked his little side adventure with Ethan though I do think they could have wrote it a little better I was sad when he had to compel the memories away like they still could have been friends he just couldn't have known about the supernatural stuff also I'm still not convinced Ethan won't become supernatural later in the series if he stays on. And that's all I have to say on that one love my baby.
Jed Tien-His writing I can't really give a writing I don't think it's horrible but I do think overall they could give him a better plot line as a series regular other than just being used for the comical relief eye candy/mentioning how he's the alpha. Though it was funny the whole pool tournament to decide who was alpha will Finch was just exactly that so bad it was laughable. However I do respect the fact that he even admitted to her that he knew she threw the game and that he is a genuine man of his word and has become better over the series from like this dumb jock stereotype to this genuine dude the Alyssa incident aside. He is a cinnamon roll and I will protect him at all cost.
Ethan- Again as he just became a series regular this season and barely showed up in his premiere season. I will not be rating him in any traditional sense. His writing is not totally horrible I liked his adventures with mg they could have been written better and they still could have let him be MG's friend without supernatural knowledge instead of compelling the friendship completely away. And I am still not convinced he will not become supernatural in some way depending on how long he stays in the series truthfully it's actually almost inevitable unless they go the whole route of making him the Matt/Token Human of the show which I really hope they don't I mean he can stay human but don't make him a supernatural hater.
Cleo-her writing is 10. I say that because she has been a phenomenal character and I've never seen the actress before but she is obviously phenomenal as well. I like her whole connection to Malivore and how it's a legitimate one that seems to be interwoven with the story that's already been presented and add something new. I also like how she tried and really wanted to genuinely be friends with all the characters especially hope but at the same time she was also very realistic and new probably and truthfully the only way for Malivore to be defeated was for Hope to Go full Tribrid and she wasn't above actually trying to murder hope to save herself and just get rid of Malivore which I can't blame her.
Malivore-after the end of season 3 / the first couple episodes of season 4 which were supposed to be the original ending to season 3 I better never hear the name again I am so tired of it this should have ended like at least a season ago at this point it's dragging on. This was supposed to be a monster of the week type of series which is okay me personally I have always appreciated having one big bad of the season and then a couple of minor baddies that get their characters arcs and take a few episodes to defeat or something as like a B or C plot. Point being is that this character and plot line has gotten stiff as can be. To be honest I think half of us aren't even here for plot line anymore we just want to see which of our ships get together.
Finch-I am loving her character and I do think she's cute with Josie. Also I stan anyone who is a sarcastic b**** Queen. I think it's nice how her will backstory was different than the traditional one but also I hated how sad it was like she literally didn't even know what she was doing. Though I will say calling Lizzie the "evil" twin that she can fight me because you don't talk about my blonde cinnamon roll like that is based on one impression from something that was only meant and done out of a good place and Lizzie's heart trying to find out her backstory. But other than that I have no real qualms with this character and it is too early to have a real in-depth analysis/opinion of her.
Thank you for reading this long rant hope I answered your question well enough if not PM me on anything specific.

which one of your muses has the most ships?
uhh  in  apx,  probably  arlo  or  daniel.   arlo  has  feelings  for  amber  and  callum,  and  daniel  is  married  to  amelia  but  also  has  a  shippy  plot  with  henrik.   if  we’re  talking  about  which  muse  i  ship  with  the  most  people,  it’s  going  to  have  to  be  damon.  mostly  bc  we  have  8  seasons  or  st  from  tvd  canon  where  he  hooked  up  with  many  a  people,  and  there  was  always  unexplored  potential  there.  @pcthstrayed, @ofvindictc, @wrckhvck
what is something everyone should know about your muses before interacting?
uhhhhh  i’m  not  really  sure.  i  had  to  think  hard  about  this  one,   so  this  is  what  i  came  up  with:
DAMON’S  muse  doesn’t  always  come  easily  to  me,  so  sometimes  it  might  take  me  longer  to  reply  and  it’s  not  bc  i’m  uninterested  in  his  threads --  it’s  just  that  he  doesn’t  always  cooperate  with  me.
ARLO  is  currently  bodyswapped  into  a  white  FC  but  he  is  a  POC.   this  is  temporary  and  i’m  not  trying  to  whitewash  him.   i  just  want  that  known.   his  body  jumps  are  into  white  folks  bc,  to  quote  @teenagewste,  only  white  people  are  stupid  enough  to  get  snatched  off  the  street  by  a  couple  of  idiots.   okay,  thank  you.   goodnight.
DANIEL  /  LEVI  will,  for  the  most  part,  refer  to  himself  as  levi  in  threads.   he  has  adopted  this  identity  in  an  almost  disassociative  way  to  protect  himself  from  the  gravity  of  his  own  actions.  it’s  a  big  yikes  but  here  we  are.
CAMI,  as  i  play  her,  is  a  raging  bisexual.  she  has  a  preference  for  males,  as  indicated  in  the  originals  canon,  but  my  hope  is  that  she  can  get  some  lady  loving  in  the  future  bc  it’s  What  She  Deserves.
VURAS  looks  like  thomas  doherty,  even  though  we  now  have  a  thomas  fc  in  legacies,  but  that  was  explained  away  by  doppelgangers.    since,  y’know,  i  was  already  playing  thomas  here  before  they  announced  he  was  going  to  be  in  legacies.  and  i  oop.    TLDR:  ever  elsey  is  a  doppelganger  of  sebastian.
ZAIN  is  demiexual.  he  doesn’t  know  what  that  means  yet,  but  he’s  learning.  so  if  your  character  is  flirting  and  he’s  like  wtf,  it’s  because  he’s  confused.
LANDON  is a  phoenix,  and  we’ve  expanded  the  lore  so  that  he  will  have  legitimate  powers.   he’s  not  currently  triggered,  as  he  hasn’t  died,  but  soon  after  he  has  he  might  learn  how  to  harness  those  abilities.
SAM,  when  he  was  possessed  by  azazel,  was  back  on  his  demon  blood  shit.  as  it  was  prolonged  exposure  over  years,  his  abilities  grew  and  developed.   i  think  i’s  back  similar  to  how  it  was  in  s1  --   with  great  concentration,  he  might  be  able  to  use  his  telekinesis,  and  potentially  see  visions.   i  think  he  mistakes  them  for  dreams  though,  or  memories.   he  hasn’t  touched  demon  blood  since  he  came  back  to  himself  but  the  cravings  might  still  be  there.   we  been  knew.
i  don’t  have  anything  about  maya  or  luke.  they’re  pretty  much  open  books  and  have  developed  intros.
would you ship any of your muses together? who?
i  think  cami  and  sam  would  be  good  for  each  other.   he  has  so  much  self  hatred,  ptsd,  survivors  guilt,  etc, etc,  that  he  needs  intensive  therapy.   i  don’t  know  if  their  relationship  would  ever  last  if  she  was  constantly  trying  to  piece  him  back  together  but  i  think  knowing  each  other  would  be  a  benefit.   it  would  be  interesting  for  her  to  see  how  equally  flawed  humans  can  be  when  compared  to  the  monsters  they  hunt.    @scgecdvice, @resilientsovl
beyond   that,  the  only  two  i  could  see  maybe  working  out  would  be  arlo  and  landon.   i  could  see  them  being   soft  and  gay  but  i  don’t  think,  in  the  long  run,  they’d  be  right  for  each  other.   they  could  bond  over  their  evil  dads  tho.  @frcmashes, @pcthstrayed

Legacies And Buffy The Vampire Slayer: 5 Ways They Are Similar (& 5 Ways They Are Different)
Tumblr media
It may seem unfair to compare and contrast the groundbreaking Buffy the Vampire Slayer to the freshman The Vampire Diaries' spin-off, Legacies. After all Buffy the Vampire Slayer ran for 7 seasons, is considered a cultural phenomenon, a cult classic, and a trailblazer due to its strong female lead.
Joss Whedon, the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, famously said that he had grown, "so tired of slasher film cliches, especially the dumb, oversexed blond stumbling into a dark place to have sex with a boyfriend, only to be killed. I began thinking that I would love to see a scene where a ditsy blond walks into a dark alley, a monster attacks her and she kicks its ass." How can Legacies compare to such an iconic show?
Legacies is the second spin-off of The Vampire Diaries. In it, we follow the children of important characters from The Vampire Diaries and The Originals.
10. SIMILAR: SETTING
Tumblr media
Both shows start in a high school setting. Our main characters, Buffy and Hope, are 16 and 17 respectively. While Buffy is new to this high school, Hope has grown up at her school. However, the struggles they face are similar. While recognizing that they are different than their peers, they want acceptance and to be more "normal."
In addition, both of the schools are in a town that has its own supernatural connection. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is in Sunnydale, the Hellmouth, a gateway for demons to enter Earth.
Legacies takes place in Mystic Falls, the small town where The Vampire Diaries took place. Mystic Falls has a long history with the supernatural. Even Hope's father, one of the original vampires, lived there. Though it has a small town charm, its history is much darker and deeper. The school they attend is full of magic.
9. DIFFERENT: THE TONE
While Legacies does have a much lighter tone than its predecessors, The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, it still is darker than the first couple seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This may be due to the previous shows casting a shadow over Legacies. As viewers, we know that Hope suffered extreme tragedy and is learning to cope with life and living. This is apparent from the pilot episode.
To contrast, Buffy is excited to be at a new school and meet new people. She swaps trendy advice with the resident mean girls and finds good friends in Willow and Xander. Although it's true that Buffy the Vampire Slayer's tone does change, especially in Season 6, it starts out light with loads of humor.
8. SIMILAR: MAIN PROTAGONIST'S JOURNEY
Tumblr media
Buffy and Hope are the only one of their kind. Buffy is the chosen one, the only vampire slayer (until she dies, of course, and another slayer awakens). Hope is the only tribrid: a vampire, werewolf, and witch. Buffy knows her quest but, like most classic protagonists on a hero's journey, struggles to accept it. On the other hand, Hope suspects that she has a quest but doesn't understand her purpose until the last episode. Wrecked with guilt through much of the season, Hope wants to prove that she is worthy of the sacrifice that her family made for her.
In addition, Buffy and Hope are strong female leads. While they have supernatural strength, they also have strong personalities and morals. They both defend others, even if it could mean their own deaths. They care about others and consider it a duty to help and protect those incapable of protecting themselves.
7. DIFFERENT: THE DIALOGUE
Joss Whedon was praised for his use of witty, smart dialogue in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It was another aspect that set his show apart. Due to the praise, Joss Whedon actually challenged himself to do an episode where there was no dialogue, Season 4's Hush. He succeeded in this episode as well, proving that while the dialogue was great, the show's success was due to more than just all the clever words.
The dialogue in Legacies doesn't stand out as much as the dialogue in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. While it has a little lighter tone than the dialogue in The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, it is still dramatic. The humor and wit are mainly missing. The focus is on the mythology of The Vampire Diaries universe, rather than witty teen dialogue.
6. SIMILAR: MONSTER OF THE WEEK
In Season 1, Legacies uses a monster of the week story-telling device. We have a dragon, a unicorn pooping mind-altering slugs, a necromancer, and more. Each monster does have the same goal: Retrieve the keys to release the Malivore. While they are one-off monsters, they are connected to a larger issue.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer practices this same strategy. Each episode had a monster of the week and, for the most part, the conflict was resolved by the end of the show. Also, we have monsters that are connected to the big bad, the Master. This, of course, changes in the later seasons, where we have stretches of episodes revolving around a solitary antagonist.
5. DIFFERENT: THE SCOOBIES
Though Buffy was the heroine of the show, she had her buddies - nicknamed the Scoobies or the Scooby Gang - help out frequently. At first, the Scoobies didn't possess supernatural abilities, but that changes throughout the show. Perhaps one of the Scoobies' strongest powers is to hold Buffy accountable. In the show, Spike (a vampire) tells Buffy that what kept her alive longer than the other slayers is her connections to others. The Scoobies may not be the title characters, but they are just as important to the show.
Hope doesn't want friends or a team to help her, besides Alaric, but she does get a team. Most of the members are supernatural beings. Hope acts primarily as a solo agent. She doesn't listen or consider their advice, thinking that she knows best. Buffy's friends feel uniquely themselves. We have yet to see all the members of Hope's team accomplish the same.
4. SIMILAR: MAIN PROTAGONIST BECOMES AN ORPHAN (BASICALLY)
Tumblr media
Many shows and books with a heroic child protagonist willing to risk or sacrifice their lives in order to save others, feature orphans (think Harry Potter). They aren't held back by parental love and aren't regarded as children. In Legacies, Alaric is okay with Hope risking her life but not his own young children (Lizzie and Josie), who are the same age.
Legacies begins two years after Hope lost her mother, father, and uncle. Partly due to her grief, she both isolates herself and risks her life to save others. At the end of the season, she sacrifices her life to save others. Sadly, they won't remember the sacrifice due to the Malivore erasing the memories others have of magical beings. Hope, as a tribrid, is a magical being.
Buffy doesn't start out as an orphan. She has a loving mother and a mostly absent father. In one of the most heartbreaking episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Body, Buffy loses her mother. The episode shows us how each character reacts to the loss. Joyce, Buffy's mom, didn't die from anything supernatural, making Buffy feel truly helpless. Buffy's father isn't really ever there to be a parental figure. Even if this only happens in Season 5, Buffy keeps her vampire business a secret from Joyce. Consequently, the hero has to act on her own most of the time.
3. DIFFERENT: MIRRORS AND METAPHORS
Buffy the Vampire Slayer uses many different creative writing techniques like mirrors or metaphors. Its text was layered with a lot of meaning ripe for analytical study. Passion of the Nerd, a vlogger, does a great time analyzing such techniques. In his series, he identifies Cordelia as Buffy's mirror, serving as Buffy's identity prior to becoming a slayer. The fact that vloggers, college professors, and fans can analyze Buffy the Vampire Slayer in such depth and for so many years, shows how well the use of mirrors, metaphors, and other creative writing tools worked.
Legacies is a younger show, with only one season to its name. So far, there hasn't been much creative writing strategies. This could change in the future.
2. SIMILAR: ENIGMATIC BOYFRIEND
In Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel presents a great mystery. Along with Giles, Angel is the only person who knows Buffy is the slayer when she arrives in Sunnydale. Angel gives her a cross necklace for further protection. It isn't until he stays at her house that Buffy finds out what he is a vampire. Later, we find out that Angel is a unique vampire since he has a soul. When the show was new, Angel's reveal was a huge deal.
Whereas Angel might have been hiding his true nature intentionally from Buffy, Landon of Legacies doesn't know his true nature. He doesn't know his past or his parents. Later, due to a drastic death, we learn that Landon is a supernatural being. He is a phoenix, rising from the ashes, from death. In addition, we find out that Landon's "father" is the Malivore. Matter of fact, Landon's parentage makes Hope's family look like a golden family.
1. DIFFERENT: A SCHOOL OF SUPERNATURAL TRAINING
Tumblr media
Alaric and Caroline created the "Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted" so that children like Lizzie and Josie would have a safe place to live and learn about their abilities. The idea was to provide a place where they could become stronger and better citizens to each other and to humans. Hope has been learning and improving her abilities since she was a child. She also has the support of her family and the other students with magical abilities. Although Hope believes herself to be alone, she is surrounded by other students who relate to what she is going through.
On the flip side, Buffy doesn't even know that she is the slayer until she is a teenager. She learns that most slayers don't live long lives. While she has Giles to provide one-on-one training, she is alone. Rather than being eased into her gift, Buffy was submerged in the icy water instantly. Later, she does meet other slayers (like Faith) that help her feel less alone, but she remains separate. She may have benefited from learning more about her gift; however, it would have limited her more ordinary experiences.
We'll see what Season 2 has in store for Hope in Legacies. It could be that there will be even more connections with Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

L.E. Sterling - True North (True Born, #2):

I want to completely escape the bounds of reality – not be shackled by them. I don’t want to just question my perceptions – I want to know I’m not in Kansas any longer.

Nicole Luiken - In Truth & Ashes (Otherselves, #3):
First for the endlessly inventive magic. Second for the fascinating new worlds to explore. Third for the fantastic creatures that dwell there: dragons, gargoyles, demi-gods and phoenixes are just a few of the ones I’ve used.
Epic fantasy gives a writer a bigger canvas to paint. Instead of a city, a country or even worlds. Wars. Heroes. Villains. Destinies. Everything is bigger is epic fantasy. The stakes are higher, instead of a single group, the fate of a world can hang in the balance.

Rebekah L. Purdy - The Summer Marked (The Winter People, #2):
Epic Fantasy is an escape from the “real world” and takes you to other lands, places you can only dream of, which is why I love it so much. And there’s so much more opportunity to really explore new creatures and characters within these worlds. I mean, who doesn’t like the idea of stepping through a closet and finding a cool fantasy world? LOL.
I’m also a big fan of the epic battles (think Lord of the Rings or Throne of Glass). Girl with a sword=Awesome.

The way people really try to say that Landon hasn't had any development since season 1 baffles me. Like the only season we didn't see any of Landons development was season 3 and I don't even want to get started on that bc I would just make myself mad. Season 1 with Landon with see this struggling kid trying to find his place in the world. To trying to figure who and what he is. All while trying to do what's best for his brother. And probably a few other things I might be missing. Season 2 we see him start to step up a bit more when it comes to monsters. At one point he was even willing to get possessed by the oui and then killed just to stop it. To being willing to live his life alone being chased by monsters. And wanting to learn how to fight to help Hope with everything. And then THREE times he was willing to give up his life to save everyone. Once in 3x01 so the Necromancer couldn't get what he wanted. In 4x01 when he asked Alaric to kill him if it meant stopping malivore. And I think this one would have been the worst bc he would've been alone in the darkness forever never getting to see anyone he loved ever again. And then in 4x04 he did give up his life(not that any of the ungrateful asses at the school care). And I love Landon more than anything but even I don't think season 1 Landon would have done any of that.
But to me it feels like people are associating development with powers. Which I find really annoying don't get me wrong I want his powers back too but again different story. So needless to say I just really dislike whenever I see someone say Landon hasn't had any development since season 1 bc that's just not the case. But maybe that's just me, Idk if anyone else sees the way I do. Lol but all I can do is hope that there's other people who see it that way too.
I completely agree. And “see” being the key word when it comes to not seeing Landon’s development in s3 because, from what we know, he had the most development in s3. We know that he learned to fight monsters and defend himself all on his own, he survived all of that, that’s a ton of development, but we didn’t get to see it. It’s the writers’ fault for choosing not to show any of it and for continuing to ignore it now as if it never happened, and for what? Who knows, but I won’t get into that either because I already talk about it all the time and will be forever livid about it... But even if you don’t count that, when you look at where Landon started to where he is now, he started out as a foster kid who had no idea who he really was or anything about the supernatural world, to then finding out about the supernatural world and being thrown into it, finding out where he comes from, that he’s a phoenix and his father is the villain, then helping protect the school from monsters multiple times, saving others, activating some of his powers, and ultimately saving everyone by sacrificing himself and doing it willingly. And now he’s been helping how many people find peace. So how does all that happen with no development? And all the other ways he’s developed each season too. Like you said, in s1, he was trying to find a place to belong and then he found Hope and a place he could stay with his brother. Even though it ultimately ended up being the wrong place for them, he felt as if he found a home for a time and got to find some happiness while there with Hope. And him being with Hope, he used to not be as honest as a way to protect himself, and knowing Hope, he came to value honesty the way he does now. And he’s become an even better person and pushed himself more because of her and the way he’s wanted to take some of the weight off her shoulders. He wanted to help with the monsters and protect the school, which he did by using his smarts. Then of course there was him finding out that he’s a phoenix and about Malivore and everything that came with that. And then all you said about s2 as well, he got even more involved when it came to getting rid of monsters, and was willing to hurt/sacrifice himself multiple times in order to help. He was able to handle himself more. And also trying to learn how to fight at one point, like you said. And he activated more powers, he came to feel more capable. He saved Lizzie (twice), Hope, and Dorian in s2. And then yeah, he was willing to give up his life those three times for everyone else! And I agree that 4x01 and what he was willing to do would have been the biggest sacrifice because he was willing to doom himself to a fate far worse than death imo by being trapped forever in darkness. Yet that was what he wanted for Hope’s sake. And he still ended up giving up everything for people who don’t even give a crap, and then says he didn’t regret it either.
And idk, I feel like in s1, if it was for Raf or Hope, Landon would’ve definitely made those kind of sacrifices. But I think that otherwise, he would’ve been more hesitant to sacrifice himself like that. I think that throughout the show he’s become much more self sacrificing, which is not a good thing in many ways. I think being at the school has been very damaging to him and his mental health and how he thinks of himself and his worth because of how he’s been treated. In the beginning, he stood up for himself more and I don’t think he would have been quite as willing and ready to give up his life. I think if he knew other people would be hurt if he didn’t, he would, but I think it would be harder for him to do that. But him being at the school, he’s become almost too willing to hurt himself and sacrifice himself to the point that it’s not healthy imo, but I won’t get any more into that because it’s a whole other subject. But on the plus side and when it comes to his development, I think that throughout the show he’s become stronger and more brave and selfless and ready to do the right thing. I mean, I think that he’s always been all of those things, but I think he’s become even more so over the seasons. And he’s gained an even greater desire to do good and save others. So yeah, there’s definitely been development and if people can’t see it, they’re not really paying attention to the show, or Landon as a character, anyway.
And I think you’re right, I think people do associate development with powers, which bugs me too. And I think they also place too much value on powers in the show as well. Because for sure, I really want Landon’s powers back too, but I don’t think that’s the most important thing when it comes to his character and his growth. Like this is why I’m more concerned about them exploring his development from last season, that happened without his powers. Because even though I obviously want his powers back, I know he’ll surely get them at some point. It’s sort of inevitable and I can wait longer for that if it meant them actually showing his growth from last season that they’re ignoring. Because I’m worried they’re just gonna keep ignoring it and give him back his powers, and all the focus will be on that while the rest is forgotten. When imo, I think the development from last season would be more important because that growth is gonna be there with or without his powers. And I’m just laughing because I seriously thought that was gonna be one of the main reasons why they took his powers away in the first place. To give him more growth without them, and to show just how strong and capable he is without any supernatural abilities and that that’s not the most important thing, just like Hope said. With the way Landon has been called weak and less capable and that he can’t be a hero because of his lack of powers, I thought s3 was gonna be the biggest way of them showing how untrue that is and that Landon is the opposite of weak and incapable (since people have apparently not grasped it yet), but nope! 🙄 So what exactly was the point of them taking his powers away if they’re not gonna show his development without them and if it’s not gonna serve Landon’s individual storyline? I guess we’ll never know.
Anyway, sorry for rambling and making this response super long. But yeah, I feel the same way as you. It’s real irritating to see people saying Landon has had no development when it’s so obviously not true. So you’re definitely not alone in feeling that way!

So if you really look at everything and how everyone reacted/reacts to Landon being in danger or "dying" (excluding Hope & Rafael) and you compare it to how they react when it comes to Cleo, Alyssa, MG, Josie..... literally anyone else being in danger .... there is a difference and that difference is in one fundamental attribute the type of species they are. The school, the squad (excluding Hope & Rafael), Dr. Saltzman they all will do everything and anything for a student/classmate/friend who is a vampire, Witch or Werewolf, they will cry and worry about them and their safety with a deep feeling. But when it comes to Landon non of them give a shit, why it's because Landon isn't one of them, he's something completely different, he's part "monster" he's the son of Malivore. Even when he was a Phoenix he was still a outsider because he wasn't one of the 3 species. Hope and Rafael care about Landon(for who he is) because they know what it feels like to feel alone, a freak, out of place, unwanted they understand that feeling better than anyone especially Hope. Everyone else doesn't, and it's because Landon isn't one of them that they don't care for him or feel anything for him on that regard. Since the witches tend to always stay with the witches(their coven), the werewolves have their pack and if you're not apart of it they don't care. The vampire stick with the vampires to a fault in way(given how they acted in s1 when Kaleb got locked up for drinking human blood and found out Mg was the reason). I mean Kaleb even had that saying back in s1 "vamps before tramps". Not to mention that in 3x16 Kaleb, Mg and Alaric cared more about finding Cleo than Landon, heck Alaric even said we lost one of own but was only talking about Cleo and not Landon. But what makes that whole thing worse is that for Landon his whole life. If you think back to s1 he told Hope "I needed help and you came. That's never happened to me before." Even in 1x16 when he saw Hope you could see it in his face that he was surprised that Hope actually came for him. I mean can you imagine growing up like that? To grow up not only unloved, but scared everyday of your life. Never knowing if the next home you get sent to would be a good one and if you'll be safe there. Wishing more than anything that someone anyone would care enough to come and safe you, take you away from that place. And I honestly feel like when Landon really does come back his mind set will be there "I can't believe Hope came for me".
P.S lol don't mind me I kind of fell down the Landon Kirby Rabbit hole today.
Yep, they definitely act very differently towards Landon and seem like they couldn’t care less about him, but I never thought of it being because of his species, but that’s very interesting. They have criticized him because of his Phoenix powers before, and have viewed him as weaker because his powers aren’t like the supernatural abilities that vampires, witches, and werewolves have. So he has been an outsider for being a Phoenix in that way, plus the fact that he is Malivore’s son, so you bring up a good point. It hasn’t actually been talked about in the show (except for the insults about him being weak because of his lack of “useful” powers as a Phoenix) but who knows, maybe it does have something to do with the way they treat him.
And yeah, exactly, Hope and Raf truly love Landon. And they have a better understanding of him and a stronger connection because they’ve had similar experiences like he has. But even without them having gone through similar things, they still just care about Landon, as they should, and they value him. Because you shouldn’t have to have those things in common with someone in order to care about them and value them. So even if the other characters can’t relate to Landon the same way Hope and Raf can and don’t see Landon as one of them supernaturally, it still makes no sense to me why they don’t care about him.
And what’s also strange is that, when you think about it, some of the other characters have had experiences where they should be able to understand and relate to Landon more, if that’s what it takes for them to care about him. Like Lizzie, for example, knows what it’s like to be bullied and to not be accepted by people, like Landon has experienced (yet she has been insensitive about the bullying Landon has endured and has bullied him herself). MG knows what it’s like to be unwanted and abandoned by your parents, like Landon has experienced. Alaric has seen and been through so much, he should be able to understand and care more about what Landon has gone through. And Josie at least used to be very close to Landon, and used to be protective of him. Yet none of these things are enough for any of them to care about him now? Or the fact that he’s helped all of them, he’s always done what he can to help the school, he saved Lizzie twice... none of this is enough to get them to value his life more?
I just don’t see why him not being one of those 3 species should matter, but you’re right about all the factions sticking together, so it could be a reason why they all see Landon differently. There’s just not the same sort of attachment or loyalty towards Landon like they have to those who are like them, which is really sad. And that’s so true about Cleo! I’ve only rewatched certain parts of 3x16 so I can’t remember all the details of what was said about finding Cleo. But I do remember that MG and Kaleb were both going for Cleo, she was the priority. They talked about her on the way there, no mention of Landon, even after what MG had done. I mean, you’d think that he would feel some remorse, that he might feel a bit hesitant or worried or awkward about seeing Landon again? But no, they just talked about what Kaleb should say to Cleo, not a thought about what MG might say to Landon or apologizing to him or anything? It’s like, not only do they just not care about Landon and all that he’s been through, but they don’t even think of him, it’s like they forget he even exists sometimes.
But yes! I’ve thought about that so much. After Landon has gone his whole life being unwanted and unloved, it just makes the way everyone treats him so much worse. And that’s so true, the fact that he was surprised in season 1 when Hope came for him says so much. Everything you said, it’s genuinely so sad. He’s been so uncared for throughout his life that he doesn’t even expect people to be there for him, and is surprised when they are. And you could be right, maybe once he’s back he’ll still be surprised that Hope came for him and did so much to save him. I feel like he was at the point where, when he first ended up in Malivore, he did believe Hope would save him. But after so long, and after all that’s happened, he probably stopped believing that, he might have felt like there was no way he could be saved. So I would think that him finding out all that Hope did for him and how she has fought for him will have a big effect on him. Because Hope showed how much she loves him throughout the whole season, but he wasn’t there to see it. So I hope we get to see some of his reaction to that, and for him to know just how much Hope loves him, possibly even more than he knew before. So at least there’s that, despite how everyone else has treated him.

This two part theory about malivore and Landon/why he's a perfect vessel just popped into my head(before I start the theory I just want to say that this theory is based on the hopes that they didn't forget or for some weird reason decided to changed what was stated back in s1 about Landon having none of malivores weaknesses). And this theory makes so much sense to me that I'm kind of hoping I'm right.
PART 1: so you know how it was said that malivore finally got it right with Landon. Making him his perfect son/vessel. I always found it weird that since malivore had got it right with Landon that he didn't just do what did to have Landon again. Giving himself more than one perfect child/vessel. And I'm sorry but there's just no way I can believe that malivore who's been planning and plotting for a 1000+ years wouldn't want to make sure he had backups just in case. So I'm thinking that maybe malivore only had one chance to have his perfect child. After that he just couldn't anymore. Making Landon his last and only chance for executing his endgame.
PART 2: so you know how whenever someone refers to what Landon is, they always either call him a phoenix or human. But they're never refer to him as a golem. And you would think with him being the son of a golem that at some point someone would have referred to him as a golem(makes me wonder if that's the writers ways of telling us that he isn't one at all but anyways...). So I'm thinking that malivore found a way to give Landon the powers of a golem without actaully making him one. He's part human and part phoenix with the powers of golem. And since he's part human that would also explain why he doesn't have any of malivores weaknesses. But since he's part human that also means he has all the weaknesses of a human. Which is where his phoenix side comes in(I know he doesn't have his phoenix powers right now, idk if it's locked away or if it really did die bc golden arrow. But I truly believe that he's gonna be getting them back sometime soon) play. His phoenix side blocks/protects his human side from all human weakness. So that makes Landon an immortal being with no weaknesses, processing all of malivore powers as well as all the powers of a phoenix. Making Landon extremely powerful, maybe even more powerful than malivore. Which is why to malivore makes Landon the perfect vessel, he'll pretty much be unstoppable.
P.s I hope that makes sense. And sorry once that theory popped into my head I couldn't not share it with someone lol.
That’s a really interesting theory! And you make a very good point because that’s so true, if Malivore was able to have Landon, why didn’t he do that again and have more children? That is weird, because exactly, you’d think he would want to have multiple vessels instead of only giving himself one option? So yeah, maybe whatever he did with Landon isn’t something that can be repeated. It’s all so bizarre because we still don’t know how exactly it even happened? Like Malivore must have taken DNA from other creatures or another phoenix to use for Landon, and also some of his own somehow, and Seylah obviously. But it’s just so strange to think about and I hope we get some answers so it makes some sort of sense and so we can know why exactly Landon is supposedly the only who can be Malivore’s vessel. I just wanna know the specifics of what Landon is already.
And you’re right, Landon is only ever referred to as a human or a phoenix. That’s very interesting, yeah, no one has ever brought up him being a golem even though his father is one. And idk why no one seemed to question him turning into mud either when he has physically always seemed human, has blood, etc. He’s clearly not made of mud and couldn’t be a golem. But because Malivore is one, you could be right and maybe Landon only got the powers of a golem. Maybe he only got the supernatural side of Malivore but not any literal mud from Malivore himself? And true, it seems him being part human makes him physically just like a human, not at all like how Malivore is physically or with those weaknesses. And when it comes to his phoenix powers, I’m sure he’ll get them back as well, and I really like the idea that his phoenix side protects his human side. And that seems to be true from what we’ve seen so far. So that really would make Landon super powerful, plus all the other abilities he might have that we don’t know about yet. And I also feel like Landon would have to be more powerful than Malivore with all his phoenix powers because I don’t think Malivore would create a vessel that was less powerful than him. He’d want to make sure he’d have no weaknesses and would be immortal, while also being able to have children, and Landon seems to fit all those things (with his phoenix powers). So you could be right! I really hope it will all be explained because it’s honestly so confusing.
And it does make sense! No worries, thanks for sharing your theory with me!
