January 2024 Books
The Journey of the Shadow Bairns by Margaret J. Anderson
Decent middle-grade historical fiction. I don't recall having any strong feelings about it one way or another.
Searching for Shona by Margaret J. Anderson
I can understand why the ending of this book went the way it did, but from a thematic standpoint it was rather unsatisfying.
Thicker Than Water by Penelope Farmer
Well-written, as Farmer's books usually are, but a combination of attitudes that haven't aged well and weird supernatural elements didn't really work for me.
The Castle Family by Rosalie K. Fry
A cute story. My younger self would have been fascinated by the setting.
Between Frames by W. R. Gingell
I have nothing intelligent to say about this series, but I am enjoying the character dynamics a lot.
The Rosemary Tree by Elizabeth Goudge
Standard Goudge, with beautiful prose and thoughtfully-developed characters.
Castle Tourmandyne by Monica Hughes
Liked it well enough, I think.
Cart and Cwidder by Diana Wynne Jones
I had trouble keeping up with the worldbuilding (not necessarily the book's fault--high fantasy generally isn't my thing) and connecting with the characters, but it was a standard twisty DWJ book.
Three Margarets by Laura Elizabeth Richards
The antique edition that the lending library sent, with its beautiful cover and illustrations, was the best part. I didn't especially care for the story.
The Rise and Fall of Mount Majestic by Jennifer Trafton
I liked the set-up of this one but lost interest as the plot progressed.
Ginnie and Geneva by Catherine Woolley
...I honestly have no memory of how I felt about this one. Must have been deeply impactful.
Comics
Stephen McCranie's Space Boy Omnibus 4 + all other installments to date on Webtoon
This is the one thing I got particularly excited about all month. The characters are endearing, the plot is engaging, and the themes are resonant. I think a lot of you guys would enjoy it!
Black Condor
I think I read this short-lived series because of connections to Ray's 1994 solo. A lot of unanswered questions, some elements that really really have not aged well, but the concept of a hero who doesn't consider himself a hero and just wants to be left alone to live in the woods like some kind of cryptid...has its charm. (He does not get his wish. And he ends up dying in the attack that also destroyed Grant's face.)

The much-talked about production did not disappoint; the modernized visuals create many new layers to the show, and make you think about events and characters in a whole new way. Nehal, Allison, Justin, and Christia were probably my favorites, but the entire cast is so talented, it’s difficult to choose any as standouts. A very nice capture overall. There are a couple quick dropouts in act one, but no major blackouts. There is one head that can be seen occasionally, but it only blocks a small portion of the stage and only affects the action for about 20-30 seconds of the entire show. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent as usual. Includes curtain call and playbill scans. Les Misérables - Duisburg - 1996 (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (SD) CAST: Jerzy Jeszke (Jean Valjean), Hardy Rudolz (Javert), Cornelia Drese (Fantine), Deborah Dutcher (Cosette), Felix Martin (Marius), Sanni Luis (Éponine), Martin Berger (Enjolras), Tom Zahner (Thénardier), Anne Welte (Madame Thénardier), Willi Welp (The Bishop) Les Misérables - Dutch Revival - Spring, 2008 FORMAT:  MP4 (SD) CAST: René van Kooten (Jean Valjean), Wim van den Driessche (Javert), Nurlaila Karim (Fantine), Suzan Seegers (Cosette), Jamai Loman (Marius), Céline Purcell (Éponine), Freek Bartels (Enjolras), Gerben Grimmius (u/s Thénardier), Marjolein Algera (Madame Thénardier) NOTES: Complete show, Amateur capture A, Double dvd Les Misérables - Fifth National Tour - October 5, 2018 (hitmewithyourbethshot's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Nick Cartell (Jean Valjean), Josh Davis (Javert), Mary Kate Moore (Fantine), Jillian Butler (Cosette), Joshua Grosso (Marius), Paige Smallwood (Éponine), Matt Shingledecker (Enjolras), J Anthony Crane (Thénardier), Allison Guinn (Madame Thénardier), Sam Middleton (Gavroche), Cate Elefante (u/s Little Cosette), Matt Moisey (Grantaire), Monte J Howell (Combeferre), Tim Quartier (s/w Feuilly), Christopher Viljoen (Courfeyrac), Patrick Rooney (Jean Prouvaire), Gabriel Sidney Brown (Joly), Andrew Maughan (Lesgles), Felipe Barbosa Bombonato (Babet), John Ambrosino (Claquesous), Steve Czarnecki (Factory Foreman), Ashley Dawn Mortensen (Factory Girl), John Ambrosino (Bamatabois) Les Misérables - First Broadway Revival - November 11, 2006 FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Victor Hawks (u/s Jean Valjean), Norm Lewis (Javert), Daphne Rubin-Vega (Fantine), Ali Ewoldt (Cosette), Adam Jacobs (Marius), Celia Keenan-Bolger (Éponine), Aaron Lazar (Enjolras), Gary Beach (Thénardier), Jenny Galloway (Madame Thénardier), Jacob Levine (Gavroche), Drew Sarich (Grantaire) NOTES: A nice capture here of Victor as Valjean. The capture is a little on the dark side, but still enjoyable. Les Misérables - First Broadway Revival - February 17, 2007 FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Alexander Gemignani (Jean Valjean), Norm Lewis (Javert), Daphne Rubin-Vega (Fantine), Ali Ewoldt (Cosette), Adam Jacobs (Marius), Celia Keenan-Bolger (Éponine), Drew Sarich (u/s Enjolras), Gary Beach (Thénardier), Jenny Galloway (Madame Thénardier), Jacob Levine (Gavroche) NOTES: A really nice video of the first broadway revival. Widescreen. Cleaned up nicely in remastering. And it has Sarich. Les Misérables - First Broadway Revival - May 12, 2007 (Matinee) (jstarz's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Alexander Gemignani (Jean Valjean), Drew Sarich (u/s Javert), Lea Salonga (Fantine), Ali Ewoldt (Cosette), Adam Jacobs (Marius), Mandy Bruno (Éponine), Max von Essen (Enjolras), Gary Beach (Thénardier), Ann Harada (Madame Thénardier), Stephen Trafton (u/s Grantaire) NOTES: Filmed in widescreen (though encoded in 4:3, so there are bars at the top and bottom of the screen), this is a nice capture of some of the new cast members. Drew and Ann give great performances in their roles. The second disc also includes the first 15 minutes of the February 24, 2007 Evening show, filmed from the rear right orchestra. A nice capture of the new cast. Capture can be dark at times, but mostly in the darker scenes. Includes a technical difficulty when the Barricades first come out, the show is stopped and includes the announcement.. A- Les Misérables - Fourth UK & Ireland Tour - January, 2019 (House-Cam's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Killian Donnelly (Jean Valjean), Nic Greenshields (Javert), Katie Hall (Fantine), Bronwen Hanson (Cosette), Harry Apps (Marius), Tegan Bannister (Éponine), Will Richardson (Enjolras), Martin Ball (Thénardier), Sophie-Louise Dann (Madame Thénardier) Les Misérables - Hollywood Bowl - August 9, 2008 FORMAT:  WMV (HD) CAST: J Mark McVey (Jean Valjean), Brian Stokes Mitchell (Javert), Melora Hardin (Fantine), Michele Maika (Cosette), John Lloyd Young (Marius), Lea Michele (Éponine), Tom Lowe (Enjolras), Sage Ryan (Gavroche) NOTES: J. Mark McVey, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Lea Michele, Melora Hardin, John Lloyd Young, Michele Maika, Michael McCormick, Tom Lowe, Ruth Williamson. Keala Settle sprained her ankle at some point between The Robbery and One Day More, resulting in her not being in One Day More and using a cane during Wedding Chorale/Beggars at the Feast. Les Misérables - Second Broadway Revival - March 8, 2014 (Preview) (SunsetBlvd79's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (SD) CAST: Ramin Karimloo (Jean Valjean), Will Swenson (Javert), Caissie Levy (Fantine), Samantha Hill (Cosette), Andy Mientus (Marius), Nikki M James (Éponine), Kyle Scatliffe (Enjolras), Cliff Saunders (Thénardier), Keala Settle (Madame Thénardier), Joshua Colley (Gavroche) NOTES: Audience was full of excitement! The last 20 seconds are missing from the very end due to battery issues Les Misérables - Second Broadway Revival - August 21, 2014 (SJ Bernly's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Nathaniel Hackmann (u/s Jean Valjean), Earl Carpenter (Javert), Caissie Levy (Fantine), Samantha Hill (Cosette), Andy Mientus (Marius), Nikki M James (Éponine), Kyle Scatliffe (Enjolras), Cliff Saunders (Thénardier), Keala Settle (Madame Thénardier), Joshua Colley (Gavroche), Mia Sinclair Jenness (Little Cosette), Angeli Negron (Young Éponine), Adam Monley (The Bishop) NOTES: A fantastic capture of this lavish production. It’s refreshing to see different faces in the lead roles, and both Nathaniel and Earl carry the show well. Nathaniel’s vocals are powerful and he has a great rapport with Caissie and Samantha. A lovely capture overall with no obstruction. Look Down is mostly blacked out and there are a couple quick dropouts during The Bishop scene and Lovely Ladies, but the show is otherwise fully intact. There is also some washout in high contrast wide shots. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. Includes curtain call and playbill scans. Les Misérables - Second Broadway Revival - July 1, 2015 FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Ramin Karimloo (Jean Valjean), John Rapson (u/s Javert), Erika Henningsen (Fantine), Melissa Mitchell (u/s Cosette), Chris McCarrell (Marius), Brennyn Lark (Éponine), Wallace Smith (Enjolras), Gavin Lee (Thénardier), Rachel Izen (Madame Thénardier), Sam Chuck (Gavroche), Joe Spieldenner (Grantaire), Weston Wells Olson (s/w Combeferre) NOTES: Act I begins at "The Runaway Cart" and nearly complete Act II. Les Misérables - Third UK (25th Anniversary) Tour - September 17, 2010 (thewho's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Christopher Jacobsen (u/s Jean Valjean), Earl Carpenter (Javert), Madalena Alberto (Fantine), Katie Hall (Cosette), Gareth Gates (Marius), Rosalind James (Éponine), Jon Robyns (Enjolras), Ashley Artus (Thénardier), Lynne Wilmott (Madame Thénardier), David Lawrence (The Bishop), Adam Linstead (Grantaire), David Covey (Combeferre), Owain Williams (Feuilly), Peter Manchester (u/s Courfeyrac), Jamie Muscato (Jean Prouvaire), Rhidian Marc (Joly), David Lawrence (Lesgles), Luke Kempner (Montparnasse) NOTES: Barbican Center Theatre, London. First time in history two same productions of a major musical played in the same city. Les Misérables - West End - May 9, 1987 (House-Cam's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (SD) CAST: Martin Smith (u/s Jean Valjean), Clive Carter (Javert), Kathleen Rowe McAllen (Fantine), Jacinta Mulcahy (Cosette), Maurice Clarke (u/s Marius), Jayne Draper (Éponine), Martin George (Enjolras), David Delve (Thénardier), Myra Sand (Madame Thénardier), Cameron Stewart (u/s Grantaire) NOTES: Commonly mistaken as December 28, 1988! Martin Smith was part of the West End cast for 6 months starting December 1986, and the non-circulated first-generation DVD labels the date as 1987/05/09. Les Misérables - West End - December 28, 1991 (House-Cam's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Stig Rossen (Jean Valjean), Paul Leonard (Javert), Jenna Russell (Fantine), Sarah Jane Hassell (Cosette), Daryll Winslow (Marius), Meredith Braun (Éponine), Mike Sterling (u/s Enjolras), David Hampshire (u/s The Bishop), Amanda Dainty (u/s Factory Girl) NOTES: Black and white. (Proof: https://youtu.be/KI_KHnLwk_k) Les Misérables - West End - May 6, 2006 FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Tim Godwin (u/s Jean Valjean), Cornell John (Javert), Kerry Ellis (Fantine), Julia Möller (Cosette), Hayden Tee (Marius), AJ Callaghan (u/s Éponine), Nolan Dark (u/s Enjolras), Barry James (Thénardier), Tracie Bennett (Madame Thénardier) NOTES: Taper’s comments: Amanda and Nolan are better than the principles and Tim sounds uncannily like JOJ (Home Counties accent not-withstanding). He first understudied in 1999, when JOJ was the principal, which may explain the similarity. About half of the Chain Gang song missing and filming starts in earnest during Valjean on parole. Other parts missed because of ushers include several random one-second cover-ups, part of the wedding and about half of Finale. Heads in the way sometimes block the action on the lower right of the stage, but they are shot around well. Vantage point provides some interesting views such as of Fantine during Lovely Ladies. Wonderful performances from the entire cast but especially then soon-to-be-Elphaba Kerry Ellis. Les Misérables - West End - September 19, 2013 FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Daniel Koek (Jean Valjean), James Gant (u/s Javert), Na-Young Jeon (Fantine), Samantha Dorsey (Cosette), Rob Houchen (Marius), Carrie Hope Fletcher (Éponine), Anton Zetterholm (Enjolras), Cameron Blakely (Thénardier), Wendy Ferguson (Madame Thénardier), Ilan Galkoff (Gavroche), Caoimhe Judd (Little Cosette) Les Misérables - West End - June 14, 2014 FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Daniel Koek (Jean Valjean), Tam Mutu (Javert), Na-Young Jeon (Fantine), Samantha Dorsey (Cosette), Dougie Carter (Marius), Carrie Hope Fletcher (Éponine), Anton Zetterholm (Enjolras), Cameron Blakely (Thénardier), Wendy Ferguson (Madame Thénardier), Carl Mullaney (Grantaire) NOTES: Final performance of the 2013/14 cast Les Misérables - West End - July 9, 2015 (Highlights) (musicalmania123's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Peter Lockyer (Jean Valjean), Jeremy Secomb (Javert), Rachelle Ann Go (Fantine), Zoe Doano (Cosette), Rob Houchen (Marius), Carrie Hope Fletcher (Éponine), Bradley Jaden (Enjolras), Phil Daniels (Thénardier), Katy Secombe (Madame Thénardier) NOTES: Highlights only. Hi Glass To help counter the doom and gloom of recent times, I was wondering if you know of any POTO actors who were married or dated? And if they were part of the main 3, how do you think it effected their on stage chemistry? I saw Tam Mutu & Sierra Boggess in LND when they were dating and they did feel more genuine than Ramin & Sierra.
@operafantomet made a really good list here, and has more in her tag on real-life couples.
It’s actually fairly difficult for me to judge the chemistry of these real-life couples, because many have either gone unrecorded (this is the case of Brennan Holder and Amy Hudson or Juliette Audra Miller and Stephen Trafton), have only had audios taken of them (this goes for Ron Bohmer and Sandra Joseph, John Cudia and Kathy Voytko, Rick Hilsabeck and Sarah Pfisterer, and Kim So Hyun and Son Ju Ho), or have been filmed but not together (there’s footage of Carla Nicholson and Michael Nicholson, but with two other Phantoms and Christines).
So the only two married couples I can think of that I’ve actually seen footage of would be Kevin Gray and Dodie Pettit and Gary Mauer and Elizabeth Southard. Their chemistry was quite good - the duo of Mauer and Southard in particular is legendary - but I also feel like I’ve seen couples who were not in relationships who had just as remarkable chemistry. For me, I think it’s the real-life context that makes me go “aawww” - that, and the adorable stories.

WORKPLACE MOTIVATION
4 March 2019
A recent essay by Pulitzer Prize=winning journalist, Charles Duhigg, provides an interesting and yet puzzling view of today’s workplace. Entitled “Wealthy, Successful, and Miserable,” it attempts to explain why highly educated, highly paid workers are unhappy.
The Duhigg essay was touched off by a reunion at the Harvard Business School where he discovered that many of his classmates were dissatisfied with their jobs and unhappy with what they had done with their lives.
At first, we could, and probably should, dismiss their unhappiness as the whining of a bunch of over-paid Harvard MBAs going through a mid-life crisis. But then Duhigg saves the essay with his observation that the unhappiness was concentrated in the most successful of his classmates.
These are the people at the top of their class, who were recruited by the most prestigious firms, and paid whopping salaries for their skills and, of course, their credentials. What is missing, though, is meaningful work. As one of Duhigg’s classmates says, “I feel like I’m wasting my life.”
To some extent, the discontent of his classmates could be considered a simple case of seller’s remorse over the Faustian deals they had made.  After all, they agreed to be overpaid and enjoyed the prestige of being a part of a top-rated company…and yet the elite, finest analytical minds in their generation didn’t figure out that there might be a cost to these benefits?  That viewpoint on the problem, though, still leaves unanswered questions about the broader motivational problem in U.S. workplaces.
One of the things we know about motivation is that it is a shared responsibility.  Both management – or leadership – and the individual play important parts in the process.
Duhigg cites a study done in 1991 that focused on understanding why some “…janitors at a large hospital were so much more enthusiastic than others.”  The researchers found that how a worker viewed his or her work was the key.  Some janitors were “helping patients.”  Others were mopping up messes.
The research study brings to mind the old story, probably apocryphal, about a man seeing two workers digging in a large vacant lot. He asked one, “What are you doing here?” And the worker answered, “I’m digging a ditch, what does it look like?”  The man then walked over to the other worker and asked him the same question.  And the second worker replied, “I’m building a cathedral.”
The other half of the motivation responsibility falls on management’s shoulders, and despite our recognizing the problem,  overall performance in this area has been largely ineffective.
If you want some useful information and perspective on motivation, or if you simply want to know more about it, there are three people whose works and ideas can help.
The first is Abraham Maslow, whose “Hierarchy of Needs” is often summarized by a pyramid containing five successive needs of workers:  Survival – physiological; Safety; Love/Belonging; Esteem; Self-actualization. The basic idea is that as these needs are fulfilled, individuals progress to the next level.  Once our survival and safety are taken care of, we move upward on the pyramid to looking for love and a sense of belonging, and eventually to esteem and self-actualization.
The second is William Shakespeare.  His St. Crispin’s Day speech in “Henry V,” given before the Battle of Agincourt, is the mother of all motivation speeches, and tops anything ever said to an underdog team in a locker room. Henry gives his speech to his cold, exhausted, hungry, disease diminished, and thoroughly rain-soaked army that was outnumbered at least five-to one by fresh French troops. And it contains the three basic elements of any successful motivation effort: (1) We’re all in this together; (2) What we are doing is important and worthwhile; (3) We have the resources we need to succeed.
The third is Stephen J. Trafton, whose book, “At the Edge: A life in search of challenge,” reveals why some successful CEOs seek out activities that are dangerous, even life-threatening.  Describing everything from rescuing lost or injured mountain climbers, to seeking speed records on Bonneville Flats, to Arctic expeditions, this is no textbook.  It does shed considerable light, though, not only on a CEO’s motivations but also on how the experiences affect the ability to motivate others.
Workplace motivation, or the lack of it, appears to be a growing problem in our economy.  Evidence of it shows up in polls rather than in “hard” economic indicator data but the polls are consistent.  It’s a problem and might be the underlying cause of our languishing productivity.
Management’s response has been unimpressive thus far, but it is increasingly clear that we need to get a handle on the motivation problem before it sours our prospects for economic growth and a “lifts all boats” prosperity.

Here’s some “old Raoul” makeup looks I really like.
Originally I wanted to do just stage photos, as that’s what the makeup is made for. It will very often look exaggerated backstage. But then I realized so many stage photos shows old Raoul in profile, and doesn’t show the makeup at all. So here’s a mix of backstage and stage photos.
Steve Barton, West End
John Martin Bengtsson, Copenhagen
Sean MacLaughlin, Broadway
Stephen Trafton, US Tour
John Riddle, Broadway
Michael Ball, West End
Anton Zetterholm, Stockholm
Andrew Ragone, Las Vegas
Brennan Holder, Cape Town
Tomas Ambt Kofod, Copenhagen

Real life POTO couples
Tumblr media
Tracy Shayne (Christine) and Hugh Panaro (Raoul, Phantom) Though I don’t think they never performed in Phantom together - Hugh Panaro left as Raoul in 1993 just before Tracy Shayne joined as Christine - they should still be on this list. They did however perform together in Les Mis, and was married for six years.
Tumblr media
Michael Nicholson (Phantom) and Carla Michalski-Thamm (Christine) They both understudied the respective lead roles in the original Hamburg production. Somewhere along the road - probably 1996, as this is when she changed her last name to Nicholson - they fell in love, and married.
Tumblr media
Kevin Gray (Raoul, Phantom) and Dodie Pettit (Meg, Christine) One of the most legendary Phantom couples in early Phantom history. Dodie Pettit was in the original Broadway cast as corps de ballet and u/s Meg Giry. She was later cast as Christine in the US tour. Kevin Gray played both the Phantom and Raoul, and I believe it was on Broadway he fell in love with Dodie. They got to star as principal Phantom and Christine together on tour, and is rumoured to have had great chemistry together. When Kevin Gray left the tour, so did Dodie Pettit. She said she could not imagine playing opposite another Phantom. They were married until Gray’s all to premature death in 2013.
Tumblr media
Ron Bohmer (Phantom) and Sandra Joseph (Christine) They fell in love in Michigan in 1997, when Ron Bohmer was principal Phantom and Sandra Joseph principal Christine, and married some years later. They are still married as far as I know.
Tumblr media
Kathy Voytho (Christine) and John Cudia (Raoul, Phantom) They played opposite eachother in the US tour in 2000, where Voytko was alternate Christine and Cudia was Raoul. They had met and fell in love some months earlier, when they were understudying the roles. They married in 2003, and are still married as far as I know.
Tumblr media
Gary Mauer (Phantom, Raoul) and Elizabeth Southard (Christine) Probably the most legendary Phantom/Christine couple of recent years, because they were the leads in the US tour, and was always described as having amazing chemistry together on stage. They’ve been married for some 25 years, and still performs together in concert.
Tumblr media
Son Ju Ho (Raoul) and Kim So Hyun (Christine) They played Christine and Raoul together in Seoul and Daegu in 2009-2010. Today they are married. Everything is beautiful about that.
Tumblr media
Rodney Ingram (Raoul) and Kaley Ann Voorhees (Christine) They’re a pair. I think they started dating during their Phantom days. That’s all I know.
Tumblr media
Stephen Trafton (Raoul) and Juliette Audra Miller (Christine) Both understudied their respective roles in the US Tour, while being a couple. And then they married, and she changed her name to Juliette Trafton. That’s about all I know.
Tumblr media
Sierra Boggess (Christine) and Tim Martin Gleason (Raoul) They had a brief romance when starring together in the Las Vegas production of Phantom 2006-2007. I don’t know too much else.
Tumblr media
Brennan Holder (Raoul) and Amy Hudson (Christine) Fell madly in love during the rehearsals prior to the first South African production in 2004. Brennan was principal Raoul and Amy was alternate Christine. They tried to keep it a secret but had such a great chemistry they fooled no-one… They married not too long after, and also followed the World Tour to a couple of the Asian stops after South Africa (both as understudies). They are still married.
Tumblr media
Scott Davies (Phantom) and Lucy Middleton (Meg)
They performed together in the UK Tour in 1998-1999, and in West End in 1999-2001. But they had met prior. They performed together in Cats, where they first met during rehearsals in Glasgow, started dating around the time the show hit Newcastle, and fell madly in love. When they finished the tour, they went to NYC, and he proposed. They then joined the UK Tour of Phantom, and then the West End production.
Tumblr media
Rick Hilsabeck (Phantom, André) and Kitty Skillman (Meg) They married in 1987, before Phantom, as they were both dancers and met through work. But faith would it that Rick Hilsabeck was cast as the Phantom in the tour, and Kitty S. H. as the corps de ballet. Some time later she auditioned for Meg and landed the part. They were on tour together 1994-1996. They were married for many years, but are now divorced, because…
Tumblr media
Rick Hilsabeck (Phantom) and Sarah Pfisterer (Christine) I don’t know when they married, but they co-founded Wiremill Academy. around 2010. They also performed the lead roles together in the US Tour 1993-1995. But before that…
Scott Mikita (Firmin) and Sarah Pfisterer (Christine)
...was married. Which goes to proove POTO family really is family.
Tumblr media
Paul Schaefer (Raoul, Phantom) and Paloma Garcia Lee (Meg) I believe they met in the Broadway production in 2011 (correct me if I’m wrong) and became a couple in 2012. Paloma was at the time in the corps de ballet and understudying Meg, but left not too long after to star in another show. Schaefer was with the Broadway production for many years, while PGL was a bit in and out. She is also credited as the youngest POTO principal in the US, from her time as Meg in the US Tour. (someone in the comments wrote they are not a couple any more)
Tumblr media
Roy Weissensteiner (Raoul, Phantom) and Emma Marie Casey (Meg) Roy Weissensteiner has understudied Raoul and the Phantom both in Germany and in the World Tour/Australia. In Germany he met Emma Marie Casey, corps de ballet and u/s Meg, and they soon became a couple. They married in 2008, and are as far as I know still married.
Tumblr media
Matthew Cammelle (Raoul, Phantom) and Heidi Ann O’Brien (Meg) I just know they’re a couple. I have no idea when they first met or when they fell in love, though I would assume it happened in West End in the early 2000s. They also both performed in the RAH concert, where this photo is from.
Tumblr media
Ian Jon Bourg (Phantom, André) and Jee Hyun Noh (Meg) The Phantom legend that is Ian Jon Bourg married the Meg legend that is Jee Hyun Noh. I believe they met when Ian Jon Bourg first joined the World Tour as u/s Phantom, after having played Firmin in the US Tour, and Phantom in Hamburg, Stuttgart, Essen and Las Vegas. Jee Hyun Noh had been with the West End production before she starred as Meg in South Korea and the World Tour. She has since understudied the role and been dance captain.
Tumblr media
Carl Lindquist (Raoul) and Astrid Giske (Christine) They started dating during the run of the Oslo production. I have no idea about the current status.
(note: I have only concentrated on lead roles, I know there are heaps of ensemble members who’s also dated/married)

How many real-life couples have played in 'Phantom'?
I think I’ve lost track, as many of the ballerinas has been with cast members, and it totally goes under the radar (for ME, that is). But some prominent leads who’s been a real-life couple as well as playing a couple on stage includes:
Tumblr media
Gary Mauer and Elizabeth Southard (US Tour and Broadway)
Tumblr media
Amy Hudson and Brennan Holder (South Africa/World Tour)
Tumblr media
Sierra Boggess and Tim Martin Gleason (Las Vegas) (as far as I’ve heard, though mind you, I’ve never seen it confirmed anywhere)
Tumblr media
Ron Bohmer and Sandra Joseph (US Tour)
Tumblr media
Kevin Gray and Dodie Pettit (US Tour)
Tumblr media
Juliette Audra Miller and Stephen Trafton (US Tour)
Tumblr media
Michael Nicholson and Carla Michalski-Thamm/Nicholson (Hamburg)
Tumblr media
Son Ju Ho and Kim So Hyun (Seoul)
There are many others, both people who played a couple on stage, and people who were in the same cast together. But the ones above was the ones I had the best photos of in their respective roles…
