In the Internet-infamous Netflix movie Tall Girl, Jack Dunkleman has been the titular tall girl Jodi Kreyman’s friend for years. He knows her birthday, her favorite color, and even the color of her eyes (blue, not green) unlike his romantic rival, Stig Mohlin. He compliments her when their peers made fun of her height. However, I think this is a prime example of when friends-to-lovers go wrong.
The main reason being Jack is a horrible friend. While being attracted to your friend is human, persistently pursuing a romantic relationship when they’re visibly uninterested is not what a good friend does. He also sabotaged her potential relationship with Stig even though the latter did turn out to be shallow and a bully. Finally, and most egregiously, at the end of the movie, it is revealed that the reason he brings his school supplies in a milk crate is that he is waiting for Jodi to reciprocate his feelings so he can stand on the crate to kiss her. This might seem romantic at first but it means Jack sees his friendship with Jodi as nothing more than a way to get into her pants. All of these examples give us a portrait of a poor friend and a poorer love interest.
Instead of calling out the questionable nature of Jack’s behavior, the creators decided to play it straight and let Jack get the girl due to his supposed niceness, which real-life negative consequences will be explored in a later essay. If Jack/Jodi has to be the endgame couple, I suggest the writer build the relationship up better and make Jack a better friend. I personally believe, however, that Jodi ending up confident and single would have been a beautifully subversive ending and one I would have greatly preferred.

Tall Girl (2019) - :|
Tropes in romance are so familiar to me that sometimes watching “new” romance content is really distracting. Even worse, I have reached a point of media saturation that sometimes I’ll watch something and I’ll get this feeling like I’ve seen it before. It’s worse, when I’ve seen it done before and better. While I was watching Tall Girl I got this very strong Pretty In Pink vibe from it that only amplified the longer I watched it. Sadly, this movie suffers a lot of the weak points of Pretty In Pink while bringing in no new strengths even if I had a few more laughs comparatively. So let’s recap:
Jodi Kreyman is in high school and feeling like a miserable outcast (don’t we all, though?) because she’s over 6 feet tall and therefore is subject to a lot of teasing. She talks about her height like the worst kind of persecution, meanwhile she has tons of great friends and a family that loves her to distraction even though she is pretty sour at them for no reason. I remember being 16 so treating her doting family poorly seemed reasonable. Then there is the quirky, interesting best friend Jack Dunkleman who has an open crush on her for years but neither of them is being weird about it. Dunkleman’s family, meanwhile, hosts Stig Mohlin the conventionally handsome Swedish exchange student who Jodi (and every other person in school) is immediately drawn to because plot. Love triangles ensue.
All of Jodi’s friends are a little overly supportive of her while she stews in her own self-loathing over something that didn’t make sense as a problem. All of Jodi’s family is also supportive, if a little wacky in how they go about it, and the zany big sister was always a highlight because her mood shifts were the right amount of extreme. I felt bad for her dad in particular for being convinced his daughter was going die from being too tall. Honestly, I didn’t empathize with Jodi’s “plight” that much and really it was a pretty sleezy thing to keep chasing after a guy who had a girlfriend already. The moment when Jodi had her big personal revelation fell flat for me because her suffering was shallow to begin with. I think I would have been happier if they had just done a straight up Pretty in Pink reboot.
