Dog Park Trends on the Rise
Dog parks are by far one of the leading features on the wish list of municipal and community parks. Dog parks can be wonderful additions to a community, whether as an inclusion to an existing community park or as a stand-alone, dog specific park. People who are thinking about building a dog park should be aware that there are many pitfalls to be encountered along the way. Although important and necessary components, building a dog park is not just about the business plan or the architectural illustrations. It is not just about that perfect parcel of land you want to use, the type of fencing you will install or the unique sign you want to place at the entrance. Before you do anything, learn about your market, learn dogs and the people who own them. https://sites.google.com/view/girldognamess/unique-dog-names
Tumblr media
To have a safe park, you must have rules and make sure they are adhered to - you must have a supervised park. While many who use dog parks may be experienced dog owners who realize they still have a lot to learn about dogs, a lot of people are first time dog owners who think they know everything. Dogs have to be interested in being social in the first place for them to have a positive experience at a dog park. Imagine mixing all dogs into an off-leash environment? You really never know what will happen, so it's imperative to have supervision. There are several models of dog parks. Municipal dog parks are usually free and open to the public 24/7. Although most have posted rules, there is no one to make sure people abide by those rules. These parks are the ones where most problems are encountered. Member based parks usually charge a fee and require people and their dogs to be registered. Many fee based parks require dogs to pass a temperament test before they are admitted to the park, and people are asked to attend an orientation session. It is not a good idea to mix small and large dogs together in an off-leash environment. Many dog parks have both a small dog area and a large dog area.
According to a recent study from the Humane Society, at least one dog can be found in approximately 39% of American households. As a result of this, America's largest cities have seen a comparable 34% increase in the number of dog parks within the last 10 years. With dog parks on the rise, park and recreation departments now have a variety of equipment, pet waste solutions and other products at their fingertips.
The Basics:
Though not always possible, successful dog parks are often launched in spaces that are not currently being used. To determine the right location, look for areas that:
Currently see high dog usage Are outside the parameters of main parks Will not affect wildlife or water quality Are evenly distributed throughout the city Are close to parking Are away from existing playgrounds, residential areas and heavy traffic Are dry and irrigated Are at least 5,000 square feet *It can also be helpful to place your dog park along a trail system to give dog owners greater opportunity to walk their four-legged companions.
While grass is currently the most common surfacing option for larger dog parks, bark chips (pun intended), sand, gravel, granite or synthetic turf can also be used. Budget, climate, park size, usage and the surrounding park amenities should be considered when determining what surfacing should be used. Splitting a dog park in half, alternating which side is open, can help preserve the surfacing of larger dog parks while letting a smaller dog park go to dirt may be a better option.
Fencing First:
Depending on the dog-breed demographics and the needs of the pet owners in your area, fencing is typically pretty standard in smaller off-leash areas while larger ones are often left without a fence. To create a smoother dog park operation, park and recreation departments are becoming a little more strategic in their fence placement while many parks are simply using a typical setup. This setup includes two sets of gates at the entry areas to allow pet owners to close the outside gate and unleash their dog before opening the inner gate and heading into the main area. Others, however, use a separate entry and exit area. If your potential dog park area contains a pond or other water feature, it is a good idea to place an additional fence around the body of water to prevent dogs from taking an unnecessary bath.
Park Features:
Today's dog parks range from basic parcels of land to elaborate pet playgrounds with ponds, spray features, agility equipment and other park amenities. The basics are now becoming standard especially when it comes to staying cool and refreshed. Though a little less important in more moderate climates, whether it's a shade structure or trees, providing shade from the heat is especially important for both pets and their owners. Ranging from a simple pet water fountain to a more elaborate spraying fire hydrant, water is a welcome amenity for all dogs. Since dogs often use anything upright as a marking post, water fountain placement is important. It may be in everyone's best interest to place the water features in areas where owners still have control over their pets via a leash.
Though the equipment in public spaces should not be of a professional grade, more recent dog parks also feature play amenities such as agility equipment. This adds a little extra fun and gives people the opportunity to do more than simply sit on a park bench. When selecting your agility equipment:
Look for equipment covered by a comprehensive warranty Choose various pieces that will challenge and accommodate dogs of varying sizes and ability levels Use rust/rot proof materials Select equipment with slip-resistant surfaces Avoid equipment that is more than 3 feet high to prevent dog and child injuries Here are a few things to consider that may help you choose the right spot for your future park:
Size It Up: The size of your park may depend solely on the availability of land. It is recommended at least 1 acre but they can be as big as your community can manage and maintain. If space isn't an issue, consider an area large enough that it's possible to rotate high traffic areas annually or even seasonally.
Pack It In: Consider how your community will use the park. Remember that people need to enjoy the park too! It's important to plan for seating and shade so everyone stays comfortable when they visit your park. Don't stop there! Do you want to include room for agility equipment, a sand box, pond or fountain, climbing wall, walking trails or anything else you can think of that your community and its dogs would love? A community meeting can help determine what's feasible and preferred by the future park patrons.
Water, Water Everywhere: Consider a water source for humans and dogs as well as a dog rinsing station. On especially muddy days, being able to rinse your dog off to keep cars from getting the full dog park experience can make a nicer day for everyone.
Plan For Clean Up: To help keep your dog park pleasant and as clean as possible, place waste stations and trash receptacles a decent distance apart (approximately 4 per acre depending on the layout). Ensure the park is easily accessible for landscaping crews so it's simple to keep your park lush and neat.
Show Your Spirit: Remember that designing your dog park extends to the spirit of the park. One key way to do this is to set the stage for responsible pet-ownership and behavior in the dog park by developing and posting park rules. Some sample rules may include: Dogs must be properly vaccinated and it is recommended that they be spayed or neutered. Puppies under 4 months of age and female dogs in heat are prohibited. Do not bring dog food into the dog park. Owners must clean up after their dogs. Dogs with a known history of aggressive behavior are prohibited. Dogs must wear a collar with identification at all times. Dogs must be leashed when entering and leaving the park. Leaving dogs unattended is prohibited. Children under the age of 16 must be supervised by a parent or guardian. Maximum of 3 dogs per person, per visit. Watch for dogs on the other side of the entry gate when entering or leaving to prevent escapes.
Tumblr media
Whether your dog park is a basic plot of dirt or completely packed with high end amenities, it should be a place that your community pet owners appreciate. The knowledge and products now available give park and recreation departments the ability to create a dog park that fits their specific location, needs and budget.

I won’t be the first or last person to marvel at how quickly February whizzed past, especially in comparison to January’s gauntlet. To be completely fair to February, it had the ongoing COVID-19 international epidemic, as well as the ABS-CBN shutdown crisis, the anti-terrorism bill, the reminder that historical revisionism re: the Marcos dictatorship is alive and well… and those were just the actual headlines.
I must digress before I spiral.
I read 12 books in February, half of which were newly released in this month. I’ve split my post up into three parts like I did last month: one-shots, parts of series, and re-reads. It seems to be working well for me.
Tumblr media
  Prosper’s Demon by K.J. Parker
The unnamed and morally questionable narrator is an exorcist with great follow-through and few doubts. His methods aren’t delicate but they’re undeniably effective: he’ll get the demon out—he just doesn’t particularly care what happens to the person.
Prosper of Schanz is a man of science, determined to raise the world’s first philosopher-king, reared according to the purest principles. Too bad he’s demonically possessed.
After I read Sixteen Ways to Defend a Walled City last year, I knew that I wanted more by Parker. I considered delving into his back catalog, which I still will probably do, but I saw that he was releasing a new book in Feb 2020, so I jumped on that first. Prosper’s is exactly up my alley, what with the discussions of morality and the greater good with demons, and quite a bit of engineering. I’d admired the voice of the main character in Sixteen because he was dry and very caught up in doing what needed to be done, and the main character has the same appealing values. It’s a short read, but it sticks in the teeth and fills the belly.

  Paladin’s Grace by T. Kingfisher
Stephen’s god died on the longest day of the year…
Three years later, Stephen is a broken paladin, living only for the chance to be useful before he dies. But all that changes when he encounters a fugitive named Grace in an alley and witnesses an assassination attempt gone wrong. Now the pair must navigate a web of treachery, beset on all sides by spies and poisoners, while a cryptic killer stalks one step behind…
Kingfisher, also known as Ursula Vernon, tends to write capable and damaged characters falling in with each other and foiling plots. She also tends to write paladins very well, which is a personal delight. I always enjoy a Kingfisher story, because the characters do the sensible thing more often than not, and she deals with trauma very compassionately, from what I suspect is a personal viewpoint. Her books are also usually very funny, very disturbing, and no-nonsense, scratching that Terry Pratchett Witch itch when I miss him very much. Grace is along the same lines, with a good solid HEA that leaves everyone, including the reader, satisfied.

Kindred, a Graphic Novel Adaptation by Octavia Butler, adapted by Damian Duffy and illustrated by John Jennings
I lost an arm on my last trip home.
Home is a new house with a loving husband in 1970s California that suddenly transformed in to the frightening world of the antebellum South.
Dana, a young black writer, can’t explain how she is transported across time and space to a plantation in Maryland. But she does quickly understand why: to deal with the troubles of Rufus, a conflicted white slaveholder–and her progenitor.
Her survival, her very existence, depends on it.
This searing graphic-novel adaptation of Octavia E. Butler’s science fiction classic is a powerfully moving, unflinching look at the violent disturbing effects of slavery on the people it chained together, both black and white–and made kindred in the deepest sense of the word.
Kindred, the novel, is on my Next 20s list. I had meant to read it before I read the GN, but picked up the graphic novel based on a friend’s recommendation. The graphic novel is searingly painful, and I enjoyed reading it, but there are parts of it that feel slightly disjointed. I’m not sure if it’s because of the time travel, or if it’s an adaptation problem. It made me want to read the novel immediately, which is what I am reading right now. I don’t think that I’ll be able to properly synthesise my thoughts about this book until I’ve read the original.
Mirror: The Mountain and The Nest by Emma Rios and Hwei Lim
A mysterious asteroid hosts a collection of strange creatures – man-animal hybrids, mythological creatures made flesh, guardian spirits, cursed shadows – and the humans who brought them to life. But this strange society exists in an uneasy truce, in the aftermath of uprisings seeking freedom and acceptance, that have only ended in tragedy. As the ambitious, the desperate and the hopeful inhabitants of the asteroid struggle to decide their shared fate, a force greater than either animal or human seems to be silently watching the conflict, waiting for either side to finally answer the question: what is worthy of being human?
Recommended to me by a new friend who’d heard I was into sci-fi and graphic novels, who absolutely hit the nail on the head with this rec. The art is beautiful, dreamy, and layered, and it keeps you tied to the story as the authors build what is a magnificent construction in your head. The authors do some really lovely things with timeskips that I have no idea how to talk about without spoiling anything, and I only regret that we weren’t able to linger through the second volume. I’m don’t know why there isn’t more of Mirror, but I do appreciate how they tied everything up as well as they could in two volumes. Looking forward to more like this in the future.

Heartstopper: Volume Three by Alice Oseman
In this volume we’ll see the Heartstopper gang go on a school trip to Paris! Not only are Nick and Charlie navigating a new city, but also telling more people about their relationship AND learning more about the challenges each other are facing in private…
Meanwhile Tao and Elle will face their feelings for each other, Tara and Darcy share more about their relationship origin story, and the teachers supervising the trip seem… rather close…?
You can read all of Heartstopper and its future updates here. Heartstopper is a lovely slice of life comic, PG13 at best, that really takes me back to my own mid-teens. The story is centered around the developing relationship of two young boys, Charlie and Nick, and it really deals with it respectfully. It tackles a lot of teen issues without being too preachy about it, which is probably the least inspiring thing I could have written about it, and integrates it deftly into the story. The art style is adorable and really complements the sweet story. This volume, just released this month, revolves around a class trip to Paris, and there are some shenanigans that you’ll have to read for yourself.
Sixty Six Book 2 by Russell Molina and Mikey Marchan
Kuwento ni Celestino Cabal. Kabebertdey niya lang. Mayroon siyang natanggap na regalo na ngayo’y unti-unti niyang binubuksan. Ika nga ng matatanda, “Huli man daw at magaling, maihahabol din.”
The story of Celestino Cabal. His birthday has just passed. He received a gift that he now gets to open, bit by bit. As the old saying goes, “Better late than never.”
This is the synopsis of the first book. There isn’t an official synopsis for the second book online, and I hesitate to write my own. Sixty Six Book 2 was released during February Komiket, and since I had been waiting for it for a few years, I had to go to the event even though everyone’s been iffy about going into crowded spaces due to COVID-19. I was excited to read this but unfortunately, I don’t think it capitalised on the foundation set in Book 1. The artist was different, and I admired their work on a technical level, as well as their humorous use of WASAK as a sound effect. I don’t know if there’ll be a third book, but the author has made themselves a little leeway for that possibility at the end of this volume.

Thank You, Jeeves, Jeeves #5 by P.G. Wodehouse
The odds are stacked against Chuffy when he falls head over heels for American heiress Pauline Stoker. Who better to help him win her over but Jeeves, the perfect gentleman’s gentleman. But when Bertie, Pauline’s ex-fiance finds himself caught up in the fray, much to his consternation, even Jeeves struggles to get Chuffy his fairy-tale ending.
This book was in my next 20s! So I’m accomplishing one of my 2020 reading goals, yay! But hot damn there is some racist language in this book. Every time I was finally sinking into the story boom! Racist language! And I know that it was because of the time it was published, like I know that academically, but oof. That aside, the story is solid. It’s a comedy of manners AND errors with Jeeves ex machina, as per usual, but this is the first full Jeeves novel I’ve read, the rest were short story collections, and it was good to see the characters take more space. It certainly made the comedic payoff a lot stronger.
But oof.

Die Vol. 2: Split the Party by Kieron Gillen, Stephanie Hans, and Clayton Cowles
No one can escape DIE until everyone agrees to go home. Or rather, no one can escape DIE until everyone who is alive agrees to go home. The second arc of the commercial and critical hit of bleakly romantic fantasy fiction starts to reveal the secrets of the world, and our heroes’ pasts. Yes, they can’t escape DIE. They also can’t escape themselves. Collects issues #6-10 of DIE
CHARACTERISATION. There’s a lot more breathing space in this newly-released volume of Die and I live for that! The first volume was a lot of the characters running from one place to the next and we, as readers, were being given the sense of setting. But volume two, you can feel Gillen just finally branching out and hitting us with their joined histories. I want to see more of how these older players will be dealing with the actions of their teenage selves, and I think the third volume will really show what the comic’s capable of. I’m really looking forward to that.

False Value, Rivers of London #8 by Ben Aaronovitch
Peter Grant is facing fatherhood, and an uncertain future, with equal amounts of panic and enthusiasm. Rather than sit around, he takes a job with émigré Silicon Valley tech genius Terrence Skinner’s brand new London start up – the Serious Cybernetics Company.
Drawn into the orbit of Old Street’s famous ‘silicon roundabout’, Peter must learn how to blend in with people who are both civilians and geekier than he is. Compared to his last job, Peter thinks it should be a doddle. But magic is not finished with Mama Grant’s favourite son.
Because Terrence Skinner has a secret hidden in the bowels of the SCC. A technology that stretches back to Ada Lovelace and Charles Babbage, and forward to the future of artificial intelligence. A secret that is just as magical as it technological – and just as dangerous.
The last Rivers of London book finished the first major arc of the series. It was a succession of explosions contained in a novel. So I was wondering what kind of tone Aaronovitch would be setting with False Value. Would it be all action, immediately? A filler story? I just wanted more Peter Grant. It could literally be an entire novel of Peter going to America to visit the Smithsonian museums and I would be on that.
False Value is a slow story but does a lot of table setting for the next arc. While the case of the book feels very small and contained, you can see that they’re being pulled into the larger world of magic. I did have a hard time with the first few chapters, but I’m not sure if this is a problem of the book, or because I sailed straight into it after the Jeeves book I had been reading.
I finished the book too quickly and now I have to wait for the next one. Bother.

The Thief, The Queen’s Thief #1 by Megan Whalen Turner
The king’s scholar, the magus, believes he knows the site of an ancient treasure. To attain it for his king, he needs a skillful thief, and he selects Gen from the king’s prison. The magus is interested only in the thief’s abilities.
What Gen is interested in is anyone’s guess. Their journey toward the treasure is both dangerous and difficult, lightened only imperceptibly by the tales they tell of the old gods and goddesses.
It’s March now, so my friends and I are starting on the second book in our read-along of The Queen’s Thief. I wrote last month that I was worried about how my friends would take the series, but really I needn’t have thought about it at all. The book stands well on its own, and my friends all got into the story. I hesitate to say that they loved it because there are four more books in the series, but they were definitely into it. Some of them had a hard time sticking to the two chapters a day schedule because Turner’s prose really just pulls you in.
I still love Gen, and I’m excited to relive his character growth.

The Farthest Shore, The Earthsea Cycle #3
Darkness threatens to overtake Earthsea. As the world and its wizards are losing their magic, Ged — powerful Archmage, wizard, and dragonlord — embarks on a sailing journey with highborn young prince, Arren. They travel far beyond the realm of death to discover the cause of these evil disturbances and to restore magic to a land desperately thirsty for it.
I’m reading Tehanu, the last book of the Cycle, now, and I’m scared of ending the series. It’s given me so much joy and peace these past few months. I slipped right into it after finishing The Farthest Shore, remembering that they overlap slightly, and that’s done a lot to soften the blow of the third book. Re-reading Farthest at this age, when things have been losing their colour and flavour, where I have to fight harder to keep myself honest and keep myself ‘good’, hits differently. I’ve been recovering, and the bitterness that Ged has over the loss of his mastery is too real to me. Of course, it’s a good book, but it hurts.
All right, that’s it for now. I’ll probably be popping in to post a little about Komiket and some other things I’ve been reading next week or so, so please keep a weather eye out for that next post!
February Reading Round-Up I won't be the first or last person to marvel at how quickly February whizzed past, especially in comparison to January's gauntlet.

Open Letter To Forsyth County
FORSYTH EXPOSED
Open Letter
An Open Letter To Forsyth County
August of 2018, a 19-year-old UGA student didn’t return home on time, the overly zealous and dramatic parents of Byron Grogan, contacted the police. The Forsyth County Sheriff’s department, outside standard procedures in a missing person, is reported, initiated a full-scale search effort. Enlisting the help of Park Rangers, members of the community, the media, and even police dogs. Byron was safely found alive when he stumbled into his parents Suwanee home in the wee hours of the night. Forsyth County utilized the best of the best, of their resources when a 19-year-old white resident sent all of his parent’s calls to voicemail. Three months later, Tamla Horsford, also a resident of Forsyth County was found dead, in the backyard of her friends home. Forsyth County then assigns it’s the dumbest investigator to supervise the case, Andy Kalin. Byron Grogan got helicopters, boats, community shock and worry, and even a police dog and all Tamla Horsford got was Andy Kalin. Tamla Horsford was black.
Dear Forsyth County, I have some questions.
I have poured over hundreds of hours of video and social media post, before writing this letter. I wanted to get a better understanding of, what #blacktwitter was calling a murder and a poor attempt at a cover-up, in Tamla Horsford’s death. And like Forsyth County, I spent all that time investigating and I am still not any closer to understanding any of this. But, unlike the Sheriff’s department, I actually proofread my stuff before releasing it.
This subject matter evokes a lot of emotion within my soul. This letter has been weeks in the making, I did not want to get too far off topic or too deep into my feelings when addressing this subject matter. But music has been my outlet since I was a child, it has given me a way to express my emotions when I had no words, it has been the noise I needed when I could not sleep. And music has been the soundtrack of my life. My favorite artist is Michael Jackson, his music moves my feet and my soul’s conscience, with his help, through his lyrics, here is my
Open Letter To Forsyth County.“Carry me / Like you are my brother / Love me like a mother / Will you be there?”
November 4th, 2018 Jeanne Meyers made a call to 911 to report her friend was unresponsive in her backyard. As per her statement, she began to call 911 before even seeing the lifeless body in her yard. What stood out to me the most was her tone, it was flat and had no emotions.
So this is where it gets odd for me. During the 911 call, Jeanne’s voice is, slightly labored but calm, she’s middle-aged and out of shape. She speaks in a very matter of fact tone. Without being prompted, she gives the 911 operator her alibi, which is again, is odd to me. Her friend is lying lifeless, and instead of asking how to help, she’s walking the 911 operator through her version of events. This is called an alibi.
Jose Barrera then takes control of the call and talks to the 911 operator. He introduces himself to her and I am sure they know each other. As if almost on cue, with no prompting, Jose begins to walk the 911 dispatch operator through his version of events. And refers to his girlfriend’s friend, as “the woman we believe to be deceased.”
Looking at her as she lay motionless, probably pacing back and forth, walking the 911 operator through his poorly constructed alibi. Jose continues on, the 911 operator asks him, repeatedly did he assess her, or did he check her pulse? “NO, but I did bend her leg back, and she appears to be stiff.”
During the entire 911 call without “assessing her,” he believes that she is dead, not one of the 4 people present, attempts to provide aid to her when the police arrive no medical personnel accompanies them. No statements are taken that day, her car is driven to her home be police, and aside from crime scene tech taking photos to illustrate how her body was positioned, no evidence was gathered and no statements were made.
According to online training documents that I found online, basic standards for training of Probation officers involves CPR. Jose Barrera failing to administer aid to Tamla Horsford, given his training and employment background and after repeated prompting by the 911 dispatcher is somewhat suspicious
Responding officers, crime scene techs, and the coroner where on scene, but medical professionals were noticeably absent from any of the reports given to open record. By Georgia law, a medical professional has to present to declare a person dead according to § 31–10–16.
As Michael Edward Christian, walks around Jeanne’s backyard and speaking to his pal Jose, he requests that all the guest present who left return. As they do, I am sure he probably trips over his own two feet somehow and notices an inanimate object in the grass, and declares she had a medical emergency from a ground level fall and then succumbed to her injuries a few hours later. Remember Byron Grogan got police dogs, Tamla’s death investigation was done by Michael Christian and Andy Kalin.
“If they say, why, why, tell them that it’s human nature.”
And 2 weeks later, Jeanne produced an email from ARLO stating the batteries in her camera were dying, and they needed to be replaced. And in the forwarded email to Detective Christian, Jeanne alluded that she was not astute enough to know how to replace the batteries in the cameras.
A quick trip to Best Buy and a phone call with ARLO determined this to be a lie. If Jeanne has ever replaced batteries in a child’s toy or even a sex toy, I am sure Jeanne would have been able to change them. She has 3 sons, a boyfriend under 30 and an ex-husband, and none of these people were able to help Jeanne change some damn batteries, I call foul.
From the beginning, this investigation clearly was not a significant concern or important to Forsyth County. “Persons of interest” interviews took place days later including one that happened 3 weeks later. More than enough time for possible corroboration, cover-ups, and lies.
As Jeanne sat next to her aunt Madeline Lombardo, as if she were assisting one of her children with their homework. Jeanne Meyers directed her aunt on what to write in her statement. And while her aunt gave detectives her oral statement during her interview, Jeanne barged her way in yielding gifts in the form of gift cards for the detectives.
“Situation, aggravation / Everybody allegation / In the suite, on the news” “All I want to say is that / They don’t really care about us.”
As I look back on the history of Forsyth County, mainly racism. I wonder did that have any bearing on the handling of this investigation? According to his self-written biography, Ron Freeman started his career over 30 years ago, in 1987. The same year that was plagued with racist counter marches by white nationalist and hateful bigots in robes calling themselves the KKK. Did any of this history have a part in the way this case was handled?
Sheriff Ron Freeman, Judge Jeffrey Bagley, District Attorney Penny Penn, Judge David Dickinson, Coroner Lauren McDonald, and Judge Phillip Smith this letter is too you. You all are elected officials and are in place for two purposes, to serve the citizens of Forsyth County and to protect their constitutional rights.
But instead, you misuse the authority and power you are given in its complete capacity. I will provide you with some examples:
Bagley, Dickinson, Smith, and Penn, you 4 especially Bagley are amongst the top 5 corrupt officials along with Sheriff Ron Freeman. Instead of using the authority given to you to protect the community that has elected you, you instead use it to further create a racial divide within Forsyth County. How many wealthy defendants have you given a “sweetheart” deal too? How many rapist, child molesters, and sexual predators still roam the streets freely because of the “sweet deals” their overpriced attorneys have afforded them?
Seriously how many sexual predators are going to be able to be free of the label of a “registered sex offender” when their probation is done, but their victims will forever carry that burden of pain. You, Judge Bagley, are a despicable round little man, you like the lack as mentioned above any sort of integrity or moral compass. How do you from an ethical standpoint preside over a case that you are friends with the defendant and the attorney. Is that why Frisky Hands Frank Huggins got off with only probation for sexual assault on a teen.
“Tell me what has become of my rights / Am I invisible because you ignore me? Your proclamation promised me free liberty, now /I’m tired of bein’ the victim of shame.”
Ms. Penn how many DUI’s has the sheriff’s office covered up for you now? I lost track when you were required to pay for the damages out of pocket. Can you also explain to me why you love sending blacks to prison? The question, for you, Penny Penitentiary Penn, wasn’t your job as a public defender to keep your clients out of prison, so why did the majority of your cases end up with plea deals that ended in prison? I mean the number alone would make even Dickinson blush.
Dickinson, what about you sir, you old grumpy goat. Why the significant disparity in sentencing and bonds when it comes to black defendants? But you give rich white kids breaks? Like the kid a few years ago who was already on probation for underage drinking, has a serious DUI, kills his passenger and you give him a low bond, and you sentence him on the low end for his offense so he can “enjoy his life” and he will also be able to get his license back? I know you remember Adam Robert Joesph Di Millo. You sentenced him to just 5 years in prison, you gave him a low bond you even let him “stay in rehab” before going to prison. It’s not like in prison he is going to have access to an open bar now is he Dicky?
And you Ronnie or do you prefer to be called Ron? I really could care less. You ran this big campaign hinged upon you’re more ethical, you’re smarter, more qualified, and hell you probably think you are better looking than Piper(no, you’re not). But I hate to tell you bud, the results have come in and that sir, like everything out of your mouth was determined to be a lie. I am not sure if it is because you have low self-esteem and you just want to have friends, and you desire to be liked, or is it you like to have the authority to selectively, administer the law.
Like all of these scandals that are popping up like teenage acne out of your office. Todd Maloney, Chris Barrett, and I hear you may have dug a hole and stuck Ben Finley in it because you don’t want his sexting scandal to get out. Why is it hard for you to be ethical and adequately administer the law. And why are you still friends with Creepy old man Frank Huggins? Why do you sympathize with racist Ronnie? I mean, that’s the reason why you are no longer at the City of Brookhaven, you stuck your chubby little neck out for Chris Shelton after he was fired, right Ronnie? For that photo, he posted of himself online in blackface. That’s the real reason you needed a two-year head start, to start your campaign. Now Chris Shelton is a deputy coroner, who got him the job? The man was fired for having poor judgment in thinking it was ok to be a racist, yet here we are again, and you have re-hired someone who was already fired, and fried for good reason. Ironic how you went on about Piper being dumb and turns out he was quite the opposite. When he fired the 11 of you, Barrett and Shelton included, that was one of the best things to happen to Forsyth County. So
And what do you do Ronnie? You come back and you bring the unwanted guest with you. Maybe instead of acne, you’re more like herpes? You know you were fired, and you and the other 10 rightfully unemployed people went to court on 4 occasions trying to get your jobs back.
And here we are, and no one has been held responsible for the death of Tamla Horsford. Ronnie, can you explain to the people why?
Nichole Lawson
Matt Meyers
Let’s backtrack a little bit there Ronnie back to your campaign. Anna DeBlois was your campaign manager, right? Didn’t her husband Brian give a hefty donation? Stacy and Tom Smith are friends with DeBlois, they are also good friends with you and your wife, right Ronnie? Did this have anything to do with the way Tamla’s case was handled? Brian was one the 11 fired by Piper, he also got creepy Frank the job at Lanier Tech, and he knew Huggins was a sexual predator right? Which is why Paxton forced him into early retirement..
“Tired of injustice / Tired of the schemes Your lies are disgusting / What does it mean”
Ronnie my boy! So let me make sure I got this correct, the Deblois’s are good girlfriends friends with your wife, and the Deblois are really good friends with Nichole and Steven Lawson as well as Stacy and Tom Smith. Jose Barrera and Andy Kalin are also really good girlfriends, back when Andy was employ be the courthouse. Then you brought him over to the sheriff’s department after he helped your campaign, right?
So just off things, I can prove on paper, you and 4 persons of interest have a connection and a friendship, Jose Barrera knows personally at least 75% of the people that work at the courthouse or the Sheriff’s department. Not only that, you got racist Chris Shelton working at the coroner’s office, where Tamla’s body stayed for two days.
So Ronnie, why wasn’t this case turned over? Clearly, there are conflicts. No one within Forsyth County clearly has any ethical values. Penn, Dickinson, and Bagley don’t keep getting re-elected because they are just great people, they keep getting re-elected because no one is running against them. So, this is what I am going to do, I have written an identical letter, with just a little less satire and I have emailed it to every elected official in the state of Georgia. I also have crafted a message to more progressives encouraging them to run. And just like Penny Penn can indict a ham and cheese sandwich, I am sure someone will be able to successfully run against you all ending your corruption and conspiracy.
Truly Yours,
Supreme Justice

What The Heaviest, Smallest White Dwarf Ever Found Means For Science
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Someday, even our own Sun will eventually run out of hydrogen fuel in its core, bringing a tremendous set of changes to our Solar System. Its core will contract and heat up while its outer layers expand and slowly get expelled, signifying our transition into a red giant. When the helium in the core is exhausted, the core will contract further, becoming a carbon/oxygen white dwarf, while the remainder of our star gets blown back into interstellar space in a spectacular planetary nebula. For practically every star born with 40% to 800% of our Sun’s mass, the same fate awaits them all.
The white dwarf that we’re left with is always much less massive than the star it originated from, and never more massive than about 1.4 solar masses. Above this mass limit — known as the Chandrasekhar mass — a spontaneous thermonuclear reaction will occur: a type Ia supernova, destroying the white dwarf entirely. Driven by a series of curious observations, a team of scientists just discovered the most massive white dwarf ever robustly measured: between 1.327 and 1.365 solar masses, and it’s only 2,140 kilometers in radius, or barely larger than the Moon. It’s a fascinating find, but what it teaches us is truly phenomenal.
Normally, a planetary nebula will appear similar to the Cat’s Eye Nebula, shown here. A central core … [+] of expanding gas is lit up brightly by the central white dwarf, while the diffuse outer regions continue to expand, illuminated far more faintly. The white dwarf at the center contracts but remains very hot, with some white dwarfs reaching temperatures of 60,000 K or more at the extremes.

While we might look at our Solar System and our Sun as a “typical” example of what’s out there, it’s important to recognize that we’re only a sample size of 1, and that nature comes in all sorts of varieties. 95% of the stars in our galaxy are less massive than our Sun, but that remaining 5% means that approximately 20 billion stars in the Milky Way are more massive than we are. Additionally, about half of all the stars we know of are part of a system with two or more stars in them; singlet systems like our own are extremely common, but binaries, trinaries, and other multi-star configurations are quite common as well.
The reason this matters is that many binary systems are born with stars of similar masses, and hence they have similar fates. If one star in a binary system becomes a white dwarf, the other one likely won’t be far behind. The brightest star in our night sky, Sirius, has a white dwarf and a star more massive than the Sun orbiting one another; come back in about a billion years, and you’re almost certain to find two white dwarfs orbiting one another instead.
Sirius A and B, a normal (Sun-like) star and a white dwarf star in a binary system. Many such … [+] systems like this are known to exist, as approximately ~50% of all the stars in the Universe are members of a binary, trinary, or larger multi-star system. The highest-mass stars, so long as they don’t go supernova, will become white dwarfs first, while the lower-mass stars will get there eventually.
NASA, ESA and G. Bacon (STScI)
But that’s the beginning of the story, not the end. Just as binary black holes and neutron stars are known to inspiral and merge, so, too, will white dwarfs in binary systems. When they do, if their combined mass exceeds the Chandrasekhar limit, you’ll get a stellar cataclysm: a type Ia supernova, which can briefly shine as bright as some ~10 billion Suns.
But if their combined mass remains below that critical threshold instead — and keep in mind that some white dwarfs can be incredibly low in mass, with the lowest-mass one coming in at just ~17% the mass of the Sun — they’ll simply lead to the formation of another white dwarf. This new white dwarf should have some particular properties that set it apart from white dwarfs that form from single stars, so even if we only find a white dwarf post-merger, we should still be able to identify its origin. In particular, we expect:
a rapid rotation, from the conservation of angular momentum of inspiraling and merging stellar remnants,
a high mass, since two typical white dwarfs (of 1 solar mass or less) will combine to either lead to a supernova or a white dwarf of mass potentially comparable to the Chandrasekhar limit,
and a strong magnetic field at its surface, just like any rapidly rotating star or stellar remnant is anticipated to have.
The globular cluster Messier 4 has not only stars inside, but a large number of white dwarfs: … [+] stellar remnants, circled in white on the right in the inset Hubble image. White dwarfs are incredibly faint and small, but they can be measured and identified with modern observatories. Characterizing them, even nearby, pushes our equipment to its absolute limits.
Harvey Richer (University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada), M. Bolte (University of California, Santa Cruz) and NASA/ESA
All of that, however, is purely theoretical. Theoretical studies can be incredibly useful, particularly when those theories are informed by robust observations that paint a consistent picture. But it’s when we find new objects that push the limits of what’s possible that the biggest scientific advances — the ones that take us beyond what’s already been established — can often occur. Astronomically, one of the newest frontiers occurs in what we call time-domain astronomy: signals from the Universe that vary, in some fashion, on very short timescales.
One of the best tools we have to study these short-time changes is known as ZTF: the Zwicky Transient Facility. By monitoring a portion of the sky with excellent precision over a period of time, you can become sensitive to small, periodic changes in an object’s brightness. (This is something you automatically lose if you take a time-average of your data, and one of the greatest science losses that mega-constellations of satellites threaten to inflict on the field of astronomy.)
When looking at the ZTF data, astronomer Kevin Barnes noticed something unusual. One object in the sky — a faint, relatively nearby point of light — appeared to fainten and brighten periodically by about ~3% every 7 minutes: an incredibly short timescale for such a large variation. Even though ZTF scans the sky on much longer timescales, about every 48 hours, Barnes was able to pull this rapid, short-period signal out of the cumulative data.
Artist’s impression of a pair of orbiting white dwarfs, called ZTF J1530+5027. Two years ago, … [+] scientists (including Kevin Barnes) used ZTF data to reveal a pair of binary white dwarfs that eclipsed one another, with an orbital period of just ~7 minutes. In 2021, ZTF data revealed a rotating white dwarf that rotates on its axis once every 7 minutes. This system, illustrated here, may be the progenitor system for these rapidly spinning white dwarfs.
Caltech/IPAC/R. Hurt
Whenever you see something that’s unlike the other things you’ve seen before, even if you’re only first seeing it because of a technological advance, your instinct ought to be to try and understand precisely what’s happening. The way we do that, astronomically, is to attempt to determine as many properties of this object as possible, and the way we achieve that is by taking as many information-rich, complementary observations as possible.
The first hint of this object’s nature came by adding in the data from the ESA’s Gaia satellite. From its perch up above Earth’s atmosphere, Gaia can accurately measure the properties of stars, including their position and brightness, over long periods of time, like months and years. As the stars move through the galaxy and the Earth orbits the Sun, this enables us to infer the three-dimensional positions and proper motions of hundreds of millions, and perhaps even billions, of stars within our own galaxy.
When we traced this light source back to its identification in the Gaia data, we found that it was only ~130 light-years (about 40 parsecs) away. From its brightness, color, and distance, we can infer that it must be a white dwarf. And with such a large, periodic variation on merely ~7 minute timescales, that tells us something else: this white dwarf must be rotating incredibly quickly.
An accurate size/color comparison of a white dwarf (L), Earth reflecting our Sun’s light (middle), … [+] and a black dwarf (R). When white dwarfs finally radiate the last of their energy away, they will all eventually become black dwarfs. The degeneracy pressure between the electrons within the white/black dwarf, however, will always be great enough, so long as it doesn’t accrue too much mass, to prevent it from collapsing further. Our Sun, when it becomes a white dwarf, will be bigger than Earth presently is, but the most massive white dwarfs can be significantly smaller.
BBC / GCSE (L) / SunflowerCosmos (R)
White dwarfs, you see, are typically about the size of rocky planets, even though their masses are comparable to that of a star. If you imagined, for example, cranking up the mass of the Earth until it was about 300,000 times as dense and massive as it is today, raised its temperature to somewhere around 10,000 K, but maintained its current size, you’d have something like a white dwarf. Only, for this particular white dwarf, it rotates a full 360° about its axis not in 24 hours, but every 7 minutes: 200 times as fast as the Earth. If you were to measure the speed of this white dwarf at its equator, you’d find it’s traveling at about 95 kilometers-per-second, or 340,000 kilometers-per-hour.
Why is a white dwarf so dense, and why does it spin so fast?
One reason is that you have so much mass together in one place, but no nuclear fusion to produce radiation. Without that extreme power output to “push back” against the force of gravity, the matter inside has no other option but to contract until something can counteract the pull of gravity. The only candidate left is the integrity of matter itself, and quantum rules like the Pauli Exclusion Principle, which prevent two identical subatomic (fermionic) particles from occupying the same quantum state. That’s where the Chandrasekhar mass limit comes from; go above a certain threshold, and even this quantum rule won’t be sufficient to stop you from collapsing. Once your total mass rises above that critical value, you’ll either trigger a set of runaway fusion reactions, or — if you’re already something like a neutron star — you’ll collapse completely: into a black hole.
When a star destined for a supernova has a dense binary companion, that companion can steal enough … [+] mass to prevent that supernova from occurring. This mass siphoning by the denser star can lead to the eventual creation of white dwarfs dominated by heavier elements than the typical carbon-and-oxygen. However, the white dwarf can also accrete enough mass to exceed the Chandrasekhar mass limit, which results in a Type Ia, rather than a core-collapse, supernova.
NASA/ESA, A. Feild (STScI)
One of the interesting things that happen to white dwarfs as they gain mass and approach this limit is that their physical size actually shrinks the more and more matter you add. The space between individual particles decreases, due to the gravitational force, by a greater amount than the cumulative addition of extra particles adds to the overall volume. As a result, the more massive your white dwarf gets — the closer in mass it gets to the Chandrasekhar limit — the smaller and smaller it gets. A white dwarf that’s less than half as massive as the Sun might be up to twice as big as the Earth, but white dwarfs that approach this mass limit can be smaller than even Mars.
When you see a heavy white dwarf, one close to this mass limit, there are a couple of ways it could have formed. You could either make one from a massive star that was just slightly below the mass limit needed for a supernova, or you could make it from the merger of two smaller, lower mass white dwarfs whose combined mass still didn’t quite reach that limit. Spins this fast — completing a full rotation in ~7 minutes — aren’t expected to arise from isolated, singlet stars that evolve into white dwarfs. It should have come from a merger, as its rotation period is comparable to that of the fastest-spinning white dwarf: 5 minutes, 17 seconds.
But, if it did arise that way, there’s another clue that we should be able to go out and look for: it should also have a strong magnetic field. Neither ZTF nor Gaia could provide that information, but follow up observations with other sophisticated instruments could.
The newfound white dwarf, ZTF J1901+1458, is roughly the size of Earth’s moon, with a diameter of … [+] about 4,300 kilometers. The moon, for comparison, is 3,500 kilometers across. The white dwarf is depicted above the moon in this artistic representation; in reality, the white dwarf lies 130 light-years away in the constellation of Aquila.
Giuseppe Parisi
That was where Ilaria Caiazzo, Caltech astronomer and lead author of this new study, came in. She spearheaded a slew of follow-up observations, including:
using the Keck I Telescope to perform spectroscopy on this object, breaking its light up into various individual wavelengths,
using the Swift observatory to obtain ultraviolet photometric data,
and using the Pan-STARRS survey data to obtain optical photometric data.
Combined with the ZTF (short-period brightening/faintening) and Gaia (parallax) data, the scientific team working on this project was able to extract an enormous amount of information about this object. What the observations indicated was that this white dwarf does possess a strong magnetic field: 800,000,000 Gauss (about one billion times stronger than Earth’s magnetic field), with variations of around ~25% over the surface of the white dwarf. The temperature of the white dwarf is very hot: 46,000 K, making it one of the hottest white dwarfs on record (possibly also indicating its youth), and also extremely small, with a radius of just 2,140 km.
This makes it the smallest white dwarf known, beating the prior record holders which came in around ~2,500 km. If we were to compare this white dwarf to objects in our Solar System, it would be smaller than even Mercury, and in between the sizes of Jupiter’s moons Callisto and Io: the 3rd and 4th largest moons in the Solar System. (Earth’s moon is 5th, if you’re curious.)
When you rank all the moons, small planets, and dwarf planets in our Solar System, you can see that … [+] many of the largest non-planetary objects are moons, with a few being Kuiper belt objects. If the smallest white dwarf ever discovered were placed onto this chart, it would be in between the sizes of Callisto, the 3rd largest moon in the Solar System,, and Io, which is the 4th.
MONTAGE BY EMILY LAKDAWALLA. DATA FROM NASA / JPL, JHUAPL/SWRI, SSI, AND UCLA / MPS / DLR / IDA, PROCESSED BY GORDAN UGARKOVIC, TED STRYK, BJORN JONSSON, ROMAN TKACHENKO, AND EMILY LAKDAWALLA
This new white dwarf — officially known as ZTFJ1901+1458 — has the smallest radius, the heaviest mass, and one of the shortest periods ever measured for this class of objects. Its large magnetic field points to an origin based in the merger of prior white dwarfs.
That does not, however, mean that white dwarfs like this are rare. Nor does it mean that white dwarfs don’t get heavier than this; estimates of the Chandrasekhar mass vary slightly based on rotation and composition: between 1.38 and 1.45 solar masses.
This white dwarf, whose mass is estimated to be between 1.327 and 1.365 solar masses, is certainly on the high end of the spectrum, but there ought to be white dwarfs that are really pushing this limit. In fact, one of them — a white dwarf orbiting a red giant in the T Coronae Borealis system — could very well be our galaxy’s next supernova. The white dwarf there is estimated to have a higher mass: 1.37 solar masses, but its uncertainties are also greater, as we cannot presently obtain a good radius measurement for it.
In fact, if ZTFJ1901+1458 were just two or three times farther away, we would not be able to make these precise measurements with our current set of observatories. For white dwarfs, it sets remarkable new records for size, mass, and magnetic field strength, but we also need to remind ourselves that we’re probing less than 0.001% of the white dwarfs in our galaxy at present.
When lower-mass, Sun-like stars run out of fuel, they blow off their outer layers in a planetary … [+] nebula, but the center contracts down to form a white dwarf, which takes a very long time to fade to darkness. White dwarfs can be even more massive than our Sun: up to about 1.4 solar masses, with the more massive white dwarfs having smaller radii. It’s only the nearest white dwarfs, however, that our current instrumentation is currently capable of measuring radii for.
Mark Garlick / University of Warwick
In the future, however, the next generation of observatories, including the Vera Rubin Observatory, will be able to make these types of measurements over volumes more than a hundred times greater than our current set of observatories can probe. Moreover, new and upgraded neutrino observatories might even be able to start measuring the neutrinos produced by the electron capture process acting on various elements supposedly within the white dwarf. The presence or absence of elements like neon, sodium, or magnesium could all affect not only the neutrino spectrum produced, but the fate, evolution, and possibly even the death of these massive white dwarfs.
This is the smallest white dwarf ever found, and in theory they may be able to actually get as small as Earth’s moon, which has a radius that’s only about 20% smaller than this new record-holder of a white dwarf. Because of its fast rotation, its high temperature, and its strong magnetic field, it’s very likely that this white dwarf formed from the merger of two progenitor white dwarfs, and that the object we’re seeing now is no more than ~100 million years old: a blip in the lifetime of the Universe.
This discovery not only helps us understand the ultimate fate and the cosmic extremes of the remnants of all Sun-like stars, but showcases the power of time-domain astronomy. If we can monitor objects sufficiently well to detect small changes on very short timescales, we’ll have the potential to uncover phenomena that we’d never see any other way. But if we modify the night sky too severely to make that task physically impossible — as our growing mega-constellations are currently in the process of doing — this information will likely remain elusive for years, decades, or even generations to come.

Many dog parks have both a small dog area and a large dog area. fridlyckans
Currently see high dog usage
Are outside the parameters of main parks
Will not affect wildlife or water quality
Are evenly distributed throughout the city
Are close to parking
Are away from existing playgrounds, residential areas and heavy traffic
Are dry and irrigated
Are at least 5,000 square feet
*It can also be helpful to place your dog park along a trail system to give dog owners greater opportunity to walk their four-legged companions.
Look for equipment covered by a comprehensive warranty
Choose various pieces that will challenge and accommodate dogs of varying sizes and ability levels
Use rust/rot proof materials
Select equipment with slip-resistant surfaces
Avoid equipment that is more than 3 feet high to prevent dog and child injuries
Here are a few things to consider that may help you choose the right spot for your future park:
Some sample rules may include:
Dogs must be properly vaccinated and it is recommended that they be spayed or neutered.
Whether your dog park is a basic plot of dirt or completely packed with high end amenities, it should be a place that your community pet owners appreciate. The knowledge and products now available give park and recreation departments the ability to create a dog park that fits their specific location, needs and budget.

The first rough little chunk of a modern AU Volpelli to tide @kitmarlowes through a shitty day~ ft. cute Jewish bookstore owner Gil
((please no reblogs))
Nic missed his bus.
Not by much, he figured, not that it mattered—whether he missed it by five minutes or five seconds, he missed it all the same. He’d been up all night going over polling numbers, reading news coverage, trying to find an angle that would salvage this nightmare of a campaign, and fallen asleep at his desk. He’d woken up and looked at his watch to find that he had about forty-five seconds to catch the bus.
But it was gone by the time he’d hurried into the street, wearing the same clothes he’d fallen asleep in. He knew it wasn’t just running late because the usual crowd of commuters was no longer at the stop. Which meant that it had showed up exactly on time for the first time since its new regular driver, a punk-ass eighteen year old everyone called Salai, had been hired. Salai was a vain idiot—he was brilliant, actually, having gone to university for art three years ahead of his classmates and graduating in record time, but he acted like an idiot—and should have been fired within his first week of work, but he spoke Italian, and Little Italy had been flooded with immigrants the last few months, mostly older folks finally coming to join their families. There weren’t many Italian-speaking people prepared to spend their entire day driving the city bus back and forth through crowded streets, and there had been an unfortunate rash of helpless non-English speakers being dumped off at odd points across New York when Salai took a few days off, so the kid stayed.
And he chose today, of all days, to actually make it to the stop on time.
Nic stood at the stop, clothes rumpled, messenger bag over his shoulder. He needed a coat; a light drizzle fell from the grey clouds overhead, soaking his head and shoulders, leaving puddles around his shoes. He thought about calling Biagio and dismissed the idea as soon as it came. Biagio was as dirt-poor as he was; the fool biked six miles to and from work every day. He’d be pedaling through the morning traffic right now, earbuds jammed in tight, his dark curls growing heavy in the rain, but he wouldn’t mind. Biagio looked good a little disheveled. At least, girls thought he did, and opinions that didn’t come out of a woman’s mouth just didn’t mean that much to Biagio.
Any other day, he might have called Agostino, who drove an ancient Mustang he’d purchased for about two grand four years ago; every year he sunk all of his spare cash into maintaining the thing. But Auggie was in Jersey for a conference. No dice.
Marietta had a car, but the thought of calling his ex-wife and asking for a ride—of meeting her on the curb and opening the door of her sleek black sportscar and seeing her nose wrinkle when he defiled her perfect leather seats with his wet ass—made him unironically want to die. Definitely not.
 Damn, he hated being broke.
The next bus was due to show in the next forty-five minutes. Slowly, shuffling through the puddles, Nic turned and went back into his apartment. It was a one-room studio, nothing he was particularly proud to call home, but it was home nonetheless. There wasn’t enough wall space for bookshelves; he’d crammed in five and then had to settle for stacking up his books on the floor, somewhat haphazardly arranged by fiction/non-fiction, then genre, then author. He weaved around them on his way to the closet. His closet, he realized, absolutely stank of thirty-something-divorcee couture. If single guy couture was sports coats and Oxfords and married guy couture was sweater vests, he was right in the middle. He opted for slacks and a sweater and found dry shoes in the back of the closet. They didn’t have gel insoles, which sucked, because he had brutally high arches and his dogs would be barking by the end of the day.
His dogs would be barking? Christ, he was becoming his dad.
With nothing to do but kill time, he put on a pot of coffee, brushed out his hair (alarmed, as always, by its slow but steady retreat away from his temples, and by the greys that occasionally made an appearance on his jawline), scrubbed the taste of morning from his teeth. He shot an appropriately apologetic text to Farha. Though kind, having her schedule disrupted brought out a beast in her, and having the man in charge of her campaign show up to work over an hour late was sure to set her off. Nic said a silent apology for the aides who would be caught up in her hurricane.
He brought the mail in, braving the rain with a coat this time. Bills, bills, bills, unsurprisingly. He tossed them onto the already substantial stack on the counter. He kept telling himself he would get to them and then, well, not getting to them, like every other functioning adult in America. Postcard from his father, who lived upstate a little ways and for some reason felt compelled to send postcards despite not travelling much further than two miles from his house to visit the barber and go to church on Sundays. He’d become very quiet since Mama died, not like himself. Nic and his sister Margherita were still trying to convince himself to move down to Little Italy, where they could keep an eye on him, keep him company.
“Bah,” Bernardo would say, waving a hand. “If I wanted to live with Italians, I’d have stayed in Florence.”
They compromised by taking turns driving up to see the old man every other weekend. Totto was up for this Friday, but soon he’d be out of the rotation. He was in school for a PhD in theology and didn’t really have the time to spare. Nic wasn’t looking forward to taking increased bus rides upstate. Maybe he’d bribe Margherita into going more often—or maybe Marietta would be willing to take the kiddo up every once and a while.
Speaking of. He had an envelope from his ex-wife, containing an alimony check that he dropped directly into the garbage, and no less than seven illustrations done in crayon, which he put up on the fridge alongside about fifty others. As per usual, he couldn’t make out what they were illustrations of, but Primerana’s color theory was developing, at least. She was beginning to pair warm and cool colors for contrast. Nic thought that must be pretty sophisticated for a four-year-old. He stood and stared at her colorings for a few minutes, missing the absolute hell out of her. He was always counting down the days until he’d see her again. He was presently six away; she’d just been with him this weekend.
At five to nine, he stood outside in the rain once more, holding his travel mug full of black coffee, and caught the bus.
 / page break
Because it was already a Monday and he missed his kid and God apparently hated him, the bus broke down four miles from the office. Every other city bus was immersed in New York traffic.
“Take the subway,” the not-quite apologetic bus driver suggested to his marooned passengers.
Nic wanted to throttle him. What madman would be taking the bus if they were in any way able to take the subway? He did consider it, particularly given that the rain was still beating its determined drum upon his skull, but the thought of descending the concrete stairs into that cool subterranean labyrinth made his hair stand on end. Damn poverty and damn claustrophobia, they were making his life absolute hell.
He shot off another text to Farha, well-aware that his explanations were starting to sound like excuses. He sent her a picture of the bus’s steaming hood, as proof. She responded with a series of emojis that he couldn’t for the life of him decipher. The next senator of the state of New York, he thought, and smiled to himself. Provided, of course, that her campaign manager ever made it into work.
With no other options—no money for a cab, and not a Lyft in sight, not that he could afford that either—Nic started walking. His shoes soaked through in a matter of minutes; he was immensely grateful for his coat, which slicked off most of the rain. He’d lost the hood in a tussle with a mugger three months ago, and cold water dripped down the back of his neck. He hunched his shoulders and weaved through the foot traffic, zoning out to the endless drone of rough New Yorker voices, cell phones jingling, cars whizzing past and spraying water across his legs.
He got an amused but sympathetic text from Biagio, who had also been sending out incessant Snapchat updates of his own bedraggled but handsomely grinning face for the last five minutes. He was recording Farha’s Morning Meltdown, as he called it. For posterity, of course. There would come a day when America would be curious to see the visual history of its future president, Farha Fareed, who needed six times as many clips as any other woman to keep her hijab in place once she really got going. Nic and Biagio really did love the hell out of her, but she was driving them both into an early grave.
Loud swearing jarred him from his digital escape. A truck was parked haphazardly on the side of the road ahead of him, one of its back wheels on the sidewalk. A man was struggling to hoist a box out of the back; the downpour had soaked it, and it bulged visibly on one side, threatening to spill its contents. As Nic approached, it gave, and hardback novels poured onto the sidewalk. The man began swearing again with a fervor.
Nic quickened his pace, bending down to grab up an armload of books while the man struggled to juggle the weight of the box onto his hip. “I got it,” he said quickly, rounding his shoulders to keep the books covered from the rain.
“Thanks,” the man panted—Nic couldn’t see him around the massive box. “Right in here—”
With the truck driver watching them sullenly through the rearview mirror, Nic followed the man into a shop; it took both of them to jimmy the door open with their arms full. Nic shuffled inside and lowered the books onto the first clean patch of floor he found, straightening up and rubbing his lower back with a wince. He looked around. He was standing in a small bookshop; each wall was lined floor to ceiling with books, new and old alike. A plastic table nearby bowed under the weight of its DISCOUNT!! mystery thrillers. A corkboard was prominently mounted on the wall by the door, bearing at least two dozen brightly colored flyers advertising reading groups, yard sales, local concerts, and bikes for sale. Nic took a number off one of those before turning to look at the man he’d helped.
 “Are there more?”
“Nope—last one,” the man—the shop’s manager or owner, Nic presumed—said from behind the front counter. The truck driver shouted something at them from the curb before starting his truck and trundling away. The bookstore owner raised a middle finger at the window without looking up from the binder he was scribbling in.
Nic approached the counter cautiously. The owner was dark, almost gloriously so. Skin like burnished bronze, curls of hair so black they were nearly brown. Great hands—large hands, Nic noted, with a sort of swooping heat in the pit of his stomach. The guy was around his height, maybe an inch or so shorter, but with muscle packed in ways that Nic—who didn’t even know where he might locate a gym in his neighborhood, let alone attend one—genuinely envied. He wore a knit cap at the crown of his head, which flattened some of his curls. Nic cast his mind around for the word for it—a religious thing, he was pretty sure. As he floundered, the guy looked up. Oh, Christ, of course his eyes would be brown too, rich and dark, like fresh soil after a heavy rain.
 “Any of them wrecked?”
“What?” Nic said dumbly, stupefied by the fierce angles of this stranger’s jaw, the furrow of his dark brows. He wasn’t precisely an Adonis—he probably hadn’t been too good-looking until he got older, much as Nic had.
“The books—the ones that fell onto the sidewalk. Are they okay?”
“Oh. Oh. Yeah. Um. Wait.” Nic turned and headed back to the books he’d abandoned on the floor. He lifted them onto a mostly-empty table, pushing aside several treatises on Plato’s Republic, and checked them over one by one. “Two—three with water damage on the covers. Pages seem okay.”
“Good.” The guy walked over, stepping around Nic to collect the injured survivors. “I’m Gil,” he said, tucking the books under one arm and sticking out the other hand. Nic shook.
“Nic. I presume you own this place?”
“You presume correctly,” Gil said, and smiled. God dammit. He would have a great smile, slightly lopsided, open and easy. “Owner, manager, and employee.”
Nic looked at the front window. It took him a moment to puzzle it out, because he was looking at the letters backwards, but he read La Volpe’s in painted script. The subheading beneath it read Bo ks nd Cur os.
“Books and Curios,” Gil said, a little abashedly. “Couple of shit-head kids vandalized it a few weeks back. Haven’t quite gotten around to repainting.”
“La Volpe,” Nic mused. “The fox. Are you Italian?”
“Half. Dad was from Florence. Ma was a Sephardic Jew.”
“Oh, it’s Jewish,” Nic blurted, and immediately felt his cheeks turn scarlet. Gil arched an eyebrow. “Sorry. I was trying to remember about your—uh—my brain is saying ‘skullcap,’ but that seems wrong.”
Gil’s face relaxed, and he laughed, a warm, lifting sound. Nic’s stomach fluttered. He was having what Biagio might call a ‘distinctly bisexual’ moment. “Skullcap will do in a pinch. I call it a kippah. I believe Adam Sandler has popularized yarmulke vis-a-vis a rather charming SNL skit.”
 “Is there a difference?”
“Nope. Depends on whether you prefer Hebrew or Yiddish. I opt for Hebrew in my ongoing effort to resist a culture of increasing Ashkencentricism.”
 “Uh,” Nic responded. Gil grinned.
“Don’t worry about it. Thanks for your help back there.”
“Oh. Of course. I could hardly stand by and watch innocent books suffer.”
Gil chuckled. “Man after my own heart. You’re Italian too, I take it?”
“Florentine. My folks came over here after the war.”
Gil hummed, a low, sympathetic sound. “The war” hung like a cloud in Little Italy. Nic glanced at Gil’s kippah and felt a bizarre, curdling sense of shame, of downright guilt, burning the lining of his stomach. He was overcome with the need to make excuses, to apologize. He looked down at his feet instead.
“Can I buy you a cup of coffee?” Gil asked suddenly.
“You don’t have to stay with the shop?”
“I mean, as busy as I am,” Gil chuckled, gesturing around the entirely empty store, “I think I can take a few minutes to thank you for giving me a hand back there.”
“I would, I just—I’m heinously late for work today.”
“Fair enough.” Gil gave him a quick up-and-down, probably just surveying the state of his clothes, but Nic caught himself hoping it was also a little something more. “Then, any chance you’re in need of a ride?”
 “I couldn’t ask you to—”
“No need. I’m offering.” Gil pulled a set of keys out of his pocket and smiled. “Come on. Coffee on the way?”
Nic hesitated, something between pride and courtesy telling him to reject the offer, but—damn, he did not want to keep walking in that rain. “Okay,” he said, a little reluctantly. “If it’s really alright for you to be gone.”
“If you’re that worried about my business, maybe you can swing by after work and grab a book or two,” Gil said, and winked.
Nic was sure it was entirely benign—probably not even real flirting—and it was cheesy as all hell to boot—but his stomach did a flip, nonetheless.
 / page breaks
Nic had approximately two regrets in life. The first was not spending enough time with his mother when she was still alive. The second was getting into the car with hands-down the worst driver he had ever had the deep misfortune of sharing vehicular space with.
“You alright?” Gil asked for perhaps the fortieth time.
Nic, jaw clenched shut, nodded. He sat ramrod-straight in the passenger seat of Gil’s truly-a-piece-of-shit Honda, one fist balled on top of his thigh, the other hand wrapped tight around the oh-shit handle above his door. Gil took a hair-rising right turn on a red light, cutting off someone oncoming, and apparently didn’t hear them leaning on their horn. Nic swayed in his seat and the handle abruptly popped off the ceiling. He sat holding it in his hand, dumbfounded.
“Oh, yeah, that’s been broken for months. Keep trying to glue it back on,” Gil said cheerfully. He leaned alarmingly across the center console and plucked it from Nic’s hand, tossing it into the back seat. “So you’re in politics, huh? Must be exciting.”
“I suppose,” Nic said through gritted teeth. Gil slammed on his brakes, and his car screeched to a halt mere inches from the next driver’s bumper. Nic saw her watching them nervously through her rear-view mirror. “We’re in the middle of a campaign for the Senate.”
 “No shit! Who’s the candidate?”
 “Farha Fareed.”
“No shit. I think she’s a boss. She was great serving on city council a few years back. What’s she been up to since?”
“Serving senate advisory boards, mostly. Filled an ambassadorship in the Middle East for—” Nic paused to stamp the non-existent brake on his side of the car. Gil braked several horrifying seconds later. “For a few months.”
“I hope you win. We need more people like her in government, you know? Not just minority people, but like…” Gil tapped a fingertip to his temple and executed a lane change with his knee on the steering wheel while he reached for his coffee. Nic desperately fought the urge to reach across and grab the wheel. “You know? She’s sharp, but honest. That’s all a politician needs, in my opinion.”
Nic could have debated that for literally hours, but he settled for an agreeable hum. They could debate the nuances of good politics next time, when he wasn’t quite so afraid for his life. His smugly observant inner self noted his use of next time. He ignored it.
“Have you always worked in the local bookstore business?”
“Nah. Took it up after leaving my sordid life of crime,” Gil said, mock-serious. Nic rolled his eyes. “Had the store for about five years now. You a book guy? You seem like a book guy.”
 “I am.”
 “Whatcha reading these days?”
“Political autobiographies, mostly. For work. I don’t have a great deal of time for leisure reading lately.”
“You should make time,” Gil said, with a note of sternness. He let go of the wheel to rabbit-punch Nic’s upper arm with both fists, then seized it again and took a sharp turn. “Seriously. It’s not good for bookworms to go too long without reading for pleasure. Bad for the soul.”
“I don’t believe in souls,” Nic replied, and wanted to take it back at once. Stupid thing to say. Too existential for a first—not a date, he wouldn’t in a million years describe this as a date, but a first companionable hellish car ride.
“Yeah?” Gil said, without missing a beat. “I do.”
 “Well, you’re Jewish.”
Gil cackled at that, nothing short of gleeful. “Right! I always forget about that part of the Torah. ‘And lo, if thou believest not in souls, know that thou art straight-up a bad Jew, lai lai lai, Amen.’”
“Okay, okay, sorry, I was talking out my ass,” Nic amended. “So do you believe in souls Jewishly? Is that possible?”
“It is Jewishly possible to believe in anything,” Gil said, with such cheerful conviction that Nic didn’t want to press him any further—he just wanted to sit for a moment with that clear, warm confidence.
As desperate as he had been to get out of the car not even minutes before, Nic was a little disappointed when they rolled up to the campaign office (Gil bumped the curb heartily and only barely managed to avoid the parking meter).
“Last stop,” he said. “Hey, I meant it earlier. It’d be nice if you stopped by the shop.”
 “Oh? And why is that?”
“Because I like you,” Gil said, tone still light, and Nic blanched. “In, like, a gay way, you know.”
“What are you, sixteen?” Nic demanded, his cheeks burning, and swung his bag onto his shoulder. “Thank you for the ride. And the coffee.”
 “Which you didn’t finish.”
“Because my stomach was roiling because your driving is abhorrent.”
Gil laughed, long and loud. “That’s fair. I hope you come by the shop later.”
“We’ll see,” Nic grumped, and shut the door. His stomach was roiling, but it wasn’t all down to Gil’s driving—he was already re-planning his route home, mapping a meandering path in his head that would take him past the bookstore.

Afghanistan’s Other War | The Diplomat
IClick, an on line browsing firm, dependent in Kabul, optimistically adopted information on the peace talks among the United States and the Taliban group. The peace talks raised hopes for the conclude of the violence in Afghanistan — and the advancement of iClick and other startups. But criminals, relatively than terrorists, are now ruining hopes of enterprise progress.
Each day, iClick gets dozens of orders for clothing and footwear to be delivered to the front doorways of prospects across Kabul city. But not all of the “customers” are buyers.
Hasebullah Nazari, 19-calendar year outdated shipping and delivery individual working for iClick, was intended to provide a pair footwear and return back properly. It sounds like a easy job – but not in Afghanistan’s cash. When Nazari arrived on a occupied street in jap Kabul the client appeared, together with his mates. They circled Nazari and demanded that he hand more than his smartphone and bike. Nazari resisted. The client then pulled out a knife and stabbed Nazari.
Making the most of this write-up? Click below to subscribe for full entry. Just $5 a thirty day period.
Bleeding, Nazari returned to the office without having his cash or his bike. Hafizullah Shujayee, a sales govt for iClick, rushed to the scene and filed a complaint with the area police. But as an alternative of offering assurances, the police officer replied, “These things occur just about every working day. Just be thorough next time.”
Even as Afghanistan’s funds, Kabul, has witnessed a substantial reduction of suicide bombings and a feeling of peace amid U.S.-Taliban talks, the metropolis has increasingly been plagued by gun-wielding gangs and armed theft. The metropolis has turned into the cash of crime, the place individuals and residences are robbed, businessmen are assassinated, and the children of prosperous families are kidnapped for ransom.
Afghan police have started a war on criminals, but it is a wrestle to provide protection in Kabul, whose residents have been burnt by war for four many years. Absolute poverty in densely populated Kabul leaves confined selections for its mainly younger population to survive. Some see few choices but to dedicate theft applying a knife or a gun.
IClick Chief Govt Officer Masiullah Stanekzai calculates that the company has misplaced all around $1,000 to robberies. “We experienced made jobs for 20 youthful people and we could do extra if we had basic safety,” he laments. “Small startups are the backbones of Afghanistan’s economy.”
Hasebullah Nazari, a 19-year-outdated shipping individual for iClick, was robbed and stabbed in Kabul. Image by Ezzatullah Mehrdad.
In a way, Nazari was blessed. Other felony functions conclude in death for the victims. Just 1 road absent from iClick’s workplace in downtown Kabul, a businessman was assassinated.
In March 2019, the neighbors of Murtaza Ahmadi, a funds changer in Kabul’s stock market, kidnapped his 6-yr-old daughter, Mahsa. Later when the law enforcement determined the kidnappers, they killed Mahsa and threw her overall body in the rubbish.
In the center of the evening, unfamiliar gunmen – considered to belong to a rival household — entered a household in the Kart-e-Sakhi community of Kabul and murdered 7 customers of a household, like small children underneath the age of 10. Only just one survived, poorly hurt.
In the dawn hrs of May perhaps 28, armed robbers stopped Romal Ibrahimi and stabbed him to loss of life.
“We have arrested several criminals,” explained Fardaws Faramarz, spokesperson for the Kabul law enforcement chief. “The law enforcement arrested 10 suspects similar to the killing of a relatives and also arrested two suspects in the killing of Mina Mangal,” a former journalist who was assassinated on her way to her place of work in the Kart-e-Naw neighborhood. Faramarz emphasised that police functions focusing on criminals have been major.
In late 2018, Amrullah Saleh was appointed as acting minister of Interior Affairs for a quick interval. He introduced important reforms and designs to crack down on criminals. At that time, the Ministry of Inside Affairs publicly acknowledged that the law enforcement confronted crime syndicates and alleged that the country’s top rated elites and warlords help and shelter criminals. The Ministry also launched the identities of 1,500 people today suspected of criminal routines and considered to collectively own a whole of practically 30,000 unlawful arms.
By the time Saleh left the Ministry of Interior Affairs to run the re-election marketing campaign for President Ashraf Ghani, a handful of those 1,500 people experienced been arrested or voluntarily turned themselves in to the police. The relaxation are still lively in the funds and elsewhere in Afghanistan. And those alleged 30,000 unlawful weapons are even now currently being utilised to dedicate theft, assassination, and kidnapping.

“Organized crime has far more intelligence than the countrywide law enforcement,” acknowledged Basic Mohammad Davood Amin, a former Kabul police chief. “The intelligence portion of the law enforcement must be qualified officers to determine and crack down on criminals in the streets of Kabul.”
Afghanistan’s law enforcement have been bloodied by many years of insurgencies. Amid a raging war, the national law enforcement had been proven, skilled, and deployed to fight on the front line versus the Taliban, al-Qaeda, and now the Islamic State — not to fight criminals in the streets.
“The police’s responsibility is law enforcement [in cities], not fighting insurgents,” claimed Amin. “The law enforcement have been turned into a fighting power in opposition to insurgents, which resulted in [their] getting the maximum casualties amongst Afghan security forces.”
Amin pushed for reform in the course of his time as law enforcement chief. He continue to phone calls for the professionalization of the law enforcement power and reforms stretching from the extremely best down to minimal-rating law enforcement officers. He has also questioned for far more gear for police forces to safe Kabul.
“One evening we had an operation to arrest a criminal in Kabul,” recalled Amin. “We went there, but the target had moved in other places. I tried out to monitor him making use of GPS and by his cellphone, but neither the Ministry nor intelligence agency could help us to arrest the large title of criminals.”
Reform in the Ministry of Inside Affairs and police forces features combating endemic corruption. President Ghani after referred to as the Ministry of Inside Affairs the heart of corruption. In private discussions, officials admitted that many generals and law enforcement commanders did not seek to receive their regular salary from the authorities mainly because they had obtained also considerably funds in bribes during that thirty day period serving on the law enforcement force.
To cite just just one illustration, on May 29, the Ministry of Inside Affairs arrested a food contractor for the Ministry on expenses of “stealing AFs600 million ($7.5 million) from the meals source in a single yr by about-billing the safety institute.” The legal professional basic imposed a travel ban on eight significant-ranking officials of the Ministry in excess of costs of collaboration with the foods contractor to steal the cash.
However, in Kabul, Afghanistan’s wounded nationwide law enforcement forces are tasked to secure a town that is vastly overpopulated. By some estimates, the population of Kabul has soared over and above 5 million.
“We are not sufficient to track criminals and arrest them,” reported a local law enforcement officer, who asked to keep on being anonymous simply because he was not approved to talk to the media. “In our district, for example, the inhabitants is all around 7,000 but the full number of law enforcement officers is 200. Then out of 7,000 folks, at least 1,000 of them are criminals. How can we do our work?”
Kabul, the money of Afghanistan, has turned into a funds of crime. Picture by Ezzatullah Mehrdad.
Additional complicating the legislation and buy circumstance, practically 50 % of Afghanistan’s capital populace life beneath the poverty line. According to stories by the governing administration, 51 percent of the overall Afghan populace life in poverty. A  2017 estimate put the median age of Afghanistan at 18.9, with about 70 per cent of Afghans under 30 yrs of age. A young and impoverished population is a recipe for disaster.
In December 2018, a report by the government proposed that 30 p.c of Afghanistan’s inhabitants is unemployed. In May 2019, a new report by the government indicated that 2.5 million Afghans keep on being unemployed.
“A lousy country does not have the energy of selection,” mentioned Standard Javid Kohistani, a stability and political analyst. “They cannot make a selection and opt for … that is why the graph of criminal actions is on the rise.”
Sayed Rashid, a 25-calendar year-old prisoner in Pul-e-Charchi Prison, was born in a distant village in Maidan Wardak province, and later moved to Kabul, looking for prospects. Rather of finding a superior career, Rashid, who goes with out a surname, ended up driving vehicles in the town.
Rashid’s money was too reduced and he began thieving telephones, then started stopping folks in the street to just take their income. It did not make him much. He started to select up superior passengers and take them to faraway spots, out of earshot. Threatened with dying, travellers have been forced to give anything to Rashid.
But he ran out of luck when one particular day he fought with the operator of a cafe. The police arrested him and charged him with theft. The court docket sentenced him to two many years and six months in prison. When we spoke, Rashid experienced served two a long time and five months of that sentence. He was impatiently waiting to walk all over again in the streets of Kabul, but really uncertain of how to make money.
Would he transform to theft yet again? That choice was still on the table.

Dissecting what Lyft’s IPO means for Uber and the future of mobility
Extra Crunch offers members the opportunity to tune into conference calls led and moderated by the TechCrunch writers you read every day. This week, TechCrunch’s Kirsten Korosec and Kate Clark led a deep-dive discussion into Lyft’s IPO and the outlook for the business going forward.
After skyrocketing nearly 10% on its first day hitting the public markets, Lyft stock has faded back down towards its IPO price as some investors grow more concerned over the company’s path to profitability (or lack thereof) and the long-term fundamentals of the business. But Lyft’s public listing is bigger than just the latest in increasingly common unicorn IPOs. As the first public “transportation-as-a-service” company, Lyft offers the first inside glimpse into the business model and its economics, and its development may ultimately act as the canary in the coal mine for the future of transportation.
“Lyft, hasn’t just survived, they’ve grown. 18.6 million people took at least one ride in the last quarter of 2018. That’s up from 16.6 million in late-2016. That illustrates the growth that the company has had. They’ve also said that they have 39% share of the ride-sharing market in the US. That’s up from 22% in 2016.
To me, the big question is let’s say they had Uber’s share, which is 66%, would they be able to make a profit? Is that the determination? And I’m not convinced that it is, which is why all these other aspects of the transportation-as-a-service business model [micromobility, AVs, etc.] are going to be really important.”

Kirsten and Kate dive deeper into what the market response to Lyft means for Uber and the timeline for its impending IPO. The two also elaborate on their skepticism of ride-hailing economics and debate which innovative transportation model will ultimately drive the path to profitability for Lyft, Uber and others.

Danny Crichton: Good afternoon and good morning everyone this is Danny Crichton, executive editor of Extra Crunch. Thanks so much for joining us today with TechCrunch reporters Kate and Kirsten.
I’ll start with a quick introduction for our two writers today. We have Kate Clark, our venture capital reporter. Kate has been with us for a while now covering everything in the startup and venture world. She’s also one of the hosts of TechCrunch’s podcast Equity and also writes our Startups Weekly newsletter.
Our other writer today is Kirsten, our intrepid automotive writer covering all things Elon Musk, Tesla, and everything else in the autonomous vehicle space. Kirsten has also been with us for quite some time and also writes a newsletter that she just introduced in the last couple of weeks, around transportation. So with that, I’m going to hand off the conversation to the two of them now.
Kirsten Korosec: Thanks so much Danny. This is Kirsten Korosec here. The newsletter is in a bit of a soft launch but it is being published Fridays and we hope to have an email subscription coming sometime in the future, so just keep an eye out for that.
I should also mention I too have a podcast centered around autonomous vehicles and future transportation called The Autonocast that comes out weekly. Thanks so much for joining the call and just a reminder, we want participation. So at about the halfway point, we’ll turn and open up the line and answer questions. Let’s get started.
Before we dig into all the hot takes out there, I think it’s worth providing a primer of sorts — a general timeline of events. We all probably know Lyft of course and most of us think of 2012 as the launch date when it came to San Francisco, but really Lyft was build out of the service of Zimride. Which is the ride-sharing company that John Zimmer and Logan Green founded in 2007.
A lot of attention has been placed on Lyft in 2018 with what happened in the past year, in the run-up to the IPO. But I think it is worth noting the intense activity and growth that happened between 2014 and 2016. These are critically important years for Lyft, just a frenzy of activity in a period where the company gained ground, investors, and partners.
To showcase the amount of activity that was happening; Lyft had two separate funding rounds, one for $530 million another for $150 million, just two months apart in 2015. You might also recall in early-2016 its partnership with GM and the automakers’ $500 million dollar investment as part of the Series F $1 billion dollar fundraising effort.
That was really interesting because GM’s president at the time Dan Ammann took a seat on the board, which he has since vacated. As Lyft and GM started realizing that they were competitors. Now, Dan is the CEO of GM Cruise which is the self-driving unit of GM.
2017 and 2018 were also big years, as Lyft launched their first international market in Toronto. They made big moves on the autonomous vehicle front, which we’ll talk about today, and in micromobility. Their scooter business launched in Denver in 2018. They bought Motivate, which is the oldest and largest electric bike share company in North America. Then, we finally get to the end of 2018, and this is when Lyft confidentially files a statement with the FDC and we’re off with the races to the IPO.
The last two months or three months is when Lyft unveiled its prospectus, met with investors, priced its IPO and made its public debut. So Kate what are the nuts and bolts of the IPO and what’s happening right now?
Kate Clark: Hi everybody this is Kate. So I’m just going to mention really quickly the timeline these last couple of months in the run-up to Lyft’s highly historical IPO. So going back to December, that’s when Lyft initially filed confidentially to go public. We later find out that they are going public on the NASDAQ when they eventually unveiled their S1 in early March.
This is after Lyft had raised $5 billion in debt and equity funding at a $15 billion dollar valuation, so there are a lot of people paying attention to what was the first ever rideshare IPO. So then in early-March, we’re able to get a closer look at Lyft’s S1, which tells us that the company has $911 million in losses in 2018 and revenues of $2.2 billion. So after calculating and pulling together some data, a lot of people were quick to find out that that means Lyft has some of the largest losses ever for any IPO. But also has some of the largest revenues ever for any pre-IPO company, just following Google and Facebook in that category.
So this is a really interesting IPO for a lot of people given these sky-high losses but also these huge, huge revenues. The next we see Lyft price their IPO between $62 and $68 dollars a share. Some people were quick to say that that was maybe a little underpriced, given that this was a highly anticipated IPO with a ton of demand. So on the second day of Lyft’s roadshow, the process, they say that their IPO is oversubscribed. So demand is apparently huge, their oversubscribed, so they decide we’re going to increase the price of our shares.

So Lyft then says they gonna charge a max of $72 per share and then on the day of their IPO they charge $72 per share, the next day opening at $87 per share. So we see a huge IPO pop that I don’t think was particularly surprising given that they already spoke of this demand, and we had already known that there was a lot of demand on Wall Street. Not just for Lyft but just for unicorn IPO’s of this stature, given that there are so few of these. So Lyft began trading hitting $87 per share though, if you’ve been following the news that’s not were Lyft is today.
Kirsten: Yeah so I was just about to ask — Kate give me the latest numbers, you know a lot of focus is on that opening day but things haven’t exactly sustained. So what’s happened in the past few days?
Kate: Yeah it’s really tough to manage expectations after an IPO. I mean, I think there has been a lot of criticism towards Lyft now and I think it’s trading below its initial share price. So as I mentioned Lyft opened at $87 per share, it priced at $72, but almost immediately they began trading below that $72 price per share. So they closed Tuesday trading at $68.96 per share. Still boasting a market cap larger than $19 billion. So they’re still significantly valued at more than they were as a private company at $15 billion but it doesn’t look good to be trading below a price per share so quickly.
However, it actually did hit its IPO price for just a minute today, so maybe let’s give it a few more hours and see where it closes. It’s possible that it will sort of jump towards that $72, but it’s still trading quite significantly below that $87.
Kirsten: With IPOs like this, and especially such a high profile one, there’s going to be a ton of attention on share price and on volatility. And so I’m wondering, in your view, what did this first week, or first few days of volatility say to you? What does it say about Lyft’s future and, well certainly, its present?
Kate: Yeah. I mean, it’s hard to say. I think a lot of people were questioning if Wall Street was going to be interested in a company like Lyft that’s extremely unprofitable at this time and has years left before it will reach profitability, if indeed it ever reaches profitability.
So at this point you got to wonder, do some of these investors that did buy Lyft right off the bat, were they really long on Lyft? Because it does look like a lot of those investors have already sold their stock and perhaps weren’t as invested in Lyft’s long-term profitability plan, which involves a lot of very iffy things, like the future of autonomous vehicles, which we’ll talk about later in this call. And there’s a lot of uncertainty there.
But with that said, it’s not uncommon for a stock to experience volatility right off the bat, and you can’t assume the future of that stock price just because of some early volatility.
And we gathered some examples of IPOs where there was some early volatility that did not determine the long term future. So Carvana, for example, which is an online used car dealer in the automotive space, and it did experience volatility at first, with the stock sliding in the first few months but ultimately trended upward.
Kate: So Carvana opened at $13.50 a share, falling below its IPO price, so it didn’t even have the IPO pop. And then in 2018, it hit an all-time high of $65 per share. Today, it’s trading around $58 per share, so that’s ultimately a positive story to be told there.
And then another example on the other side of things is Snap, which actually took four months to dip beneath its 2017 IPO price, and we all know Snap has definitely not been a success story and it’s trading well below its offer price. But then finally, Facebook, for example, dropped below its IPO price on its second day of trading and then actually had a rough first year on the stock market before the stock ultimately took off and became a very obvious success.
Kirsten: So, Kate, I’m wondering why you think that there was that initial run up on that first day. Was it excitement? Was there something material that was pushing the price up? What was the cause?
Kate: I think there was a lot of excitement and demand around this IPO because it was very much one-of-a-kind, and there were a lot of investors that it seemed were really long on the possibility of Lyft becoming this hugely profitable company. And I think a lot of that was because in the S1, although you did see these really, really big losses — quite major, just ridiculously huge losses — you did see that they were shrinking over time and that there was definitely a path in which Lyft could take where it would reach profitability, say, in the next five years.
And I think Wall Street was really paying attention to that, and they were not paying attention to some of the other metrics. Now, they’ve taken off their rose-colored glasses and they’re looking at Lyft as a public company, and it’s just a little bit different now that it’s actually completed its debut.
Kirsten: Well, so, I mean, I like to view IPOs often times, and especially in Lyft’s case, as a measure of an investors’ faith in the company’s growth prospects, because this is a company that while it does have quite a bit of revenue, it has significant losses and it’s really planning not just for the present day but for the future. It’s been called a disruptive business for a reason, and it is certainly very forward-looking. So I’m wondering if you think it was a good strategy for Lyft. They wanted to open it up to “the everyman” when they actually went to market. They did a different approach, and do you think this might have had an effect? I mean, it’s very on-brand for them to do this, but I’m wondering if you thought that means that some of the investors aren’t as disciplined.
Kate: Do you mean with the fact they were providing bonuses to their employees and drivers to actually participate in the IPO as well?
Kirsten: Absolutely. That’s actually a really good point that maybe you can elaborate on. Lyft did a little bit of a more open approach for its IPO. Typically IPOs can be closed off to only large, institutional investors. So did this set them up perhaps to have more volatility?
Kate: Yeah, Lyft provided some of their drivers up to, I think, $10,000 to, in theory, actually buy stock in the IPO. Do I think that had a high impact? I don’t know. I think there’s not enough comparison, not enough data to really make a decision or to make a hot take on whether that really was part of the volatility. I think just given the uncertain nature of Lyft’s future and their big losses, I think their volatility was pretty inevitable, and I think people paying attention to this are probably not particularly surprised by how the stock has fared in these first couple days.
And I do want to add there’s this six-month lock-up period for the venture capital funds that own Lyft and as well as their employees, so I think we’re not sure what’s going to happen when that lock-up period ends and those holders can just sell their stock right then or how that will impact the stock price, as well.
Image via TechCrunch/MRD
Kirsten: So something to keep an eye on. It reminds me a lot of a company I write a lot about, which is Tesla, and I’ve been covering them for years. And it’s one of the most volatile stocks, and their investors, they certainly have large, institutional investors, but the number of fanboys that they have with smaller investors, either prop up the share price sometimes or add to that volatility, and I’m kind of really curious to see if that happens with Lyft. If you go to a shareholder meeting at Tesla, for example, it’s filled with people who are passionate about the brand and its CEO, Elon Musk.
And Lyft and possibly Uber, if they end up finally going through with their IPO, you can see that potentially happening because people feel very strongly about the brand and also the service it provides. So I’m curious to see how this all sort of shakes out. And I tend to take the view that I invest personally in mutual funds and things like that. I don’t invest in any of these companies, but the long, patient view tends to be the better one, and trying to catch a falling knife, as investors have told me, is never really a good idea.
So I’m curious to see if investors sort of grow up and learn with Lyft, if they’ll become disciplined and just sort of wait it out and see them play out the growth prospects for the company in the long term. So, we’ve been talking about Lyft and I can’t not talk about Uber as a result. I’m wondering what you think this might mean for Uber. The big story initially was let’s beat Uber to IPO and I’m wondering what this means then. Is this indicative of what Uber is going to experience?
Kate: I think that question is really at the top of everyone’s mind right now, including my own. I will say that I still do think it was highly beneficial for Lyft to get out first. Because imagine if and when Uber does too experience volatility, which it probably will, if it were to have gone first, I think that would have frightened Lyft a lot more than Lyft’s volatility may or may not be frightening Uber. So, with that said, I think I’m of two minds right now with my thoughts on how this impacts Uber’s IPO. I think that if Lyft stock continues to be volatile and perhaps even falls lower than it already has. I do think that there is a chance Uber may ultimately decide to push its IPO back.
I think that for a few reasons, namely being that Uber is not in a huge rush to go public. They do have the ability to wait. They have filed to go public. So it’s likely to happen quite soon, but it may not happen in April as they are reportedly planning to do.
On the other hand, Lyft went public at like a $24 or $25 billion dollar market cap. Whereas Uber is going to debut at maybe a $120 billion dollar initial market cap. So these IPOs, although they are both ride hail IPOs and they are very similar companies in a lot of ways, they’re also very different and Uber is operating on an entirely different scale though it still is unprofitable. And has some of the same issues that, investors are probably noting about Lyft.
I think it’s either going to be that it’s maybe that they do decide to push it back or maybe that Uber is like, well we’re five times larger, six times larger. We have much larger statistics to show to investors. There’s just a chance it could go either way. I wish I had a better, more concrete answer, but I just don’t think we know yet.
Kirsten: Well I’m okay with not taking hot takes just a few days into this IPO. I think this is a good time to open it up to questions. While we wait for a question, I will do one quick follow up with you Kate. What do you think this means for Uber? Will it delay its IPO?
Kate: Right now, no, I don’t think they’re going to. But it’s like I said, it’s tough to say given that it’s only been a few days of Lyfts IPO. But no, I think you’ve got to imagine that they are ready to discuss the possibilities of Lyfts IPO and already planned ahead if there was volatility. They maybe already assumed that would happen, given that that’s not uncommon. So right now I’m going to say no, I don’t think they’re going to delay, but it’s certainly still a possibility.
Kirsten: Okay, great. I think another really interesting piece for Uber was their acquisition of Careem. This is a deal that was made right before their IPO, so it was shifting attention away from Lyft, just for a moment.
Why did Uber do this? Is this not a signal that they’re delaying their IPO? Is this just prepping for it? What are you hearing on it? I’m wondering if this might have just been a strategy to show the world investors, specifically potential shareholders, what the road ahead is going to look like. Or is it some other reason — Is it to justify their really big losses?
Image via Careem / Facebook
Kate: I think it’s the latter two things you said.  Just to give some background Uber is paying about $3.1 billion to acquire Careem, which is a Middle Eastern ride-hailing company. So basically just the Uber of the Middle East. Uber does have a history of acquiring, smaller competitors like this in different markets where it’s not active, just as a way for Uber to quickly grow essentially.
So I do think it’s a big deal to make just before going public. So I guess we don’t know if they necessarily will go public in April, but I think it was a move to present to public market investors as a prep for an IPO, to show “we just acquired this company, here’s more evidence of future growth”. Like you mentioned, it’s definitely a justification of those huge losses that we know Uber has.
Kirsten: Thanks for that. Questions?
Caller Question: Hi there, so when we talk about looking ahead and moving towards profitability — what role, if any, do you think the acquisition of a scooter or other mobility companies will have for companies like Lyft and Uber?
Kirsten: That’s a great question. I think it’s going to be a huge piece of both of their businesses. A lot of people describe this as the first ride-hailing IPO. We need to stop calling this a ride-hailing company. These are transportation-as-a-service companies and they’re making money. But generating revenue as opposed to making profit is a totally different thing. When you start talking about ridesharing, it’s a tough business. With those it’s an asset-light business, right? They don’t own the cars and then they technically don’t employ these drivers.
But at the same time, as of 2016 only something like 1% of people in the US were using rideshare. So you see this opportunity, but they’re not pushing forward. There is a ton of car ownership still that’s happening. Yes, sharing has absolutely increased, but 17 million new cars were sold in the US last year. So scooters, bike share and other businesses are going to be key to their paths to profitability because ride-sharing alone is just difficult to make a profit. It’s not difficult to generate revenue. It’s difficult to make a profit on.
And I’m wondering, talking about that road to profitability, I do think it’s worth noting how much they have grown. Lyft, hasn’t just survived, they’ve grown. 18.6 million people took at least one ride in the last quarter of 2018. That’s up from 16.6 million in late 2016, that illustrates the growth that the company has had.
They’ve also said that they have 39% share of the ride-sharing market in the US. That’s up from 22% in 2016. To me, the big question is let’s say they had Uber’s share, which is 66%, would they be able to make a profit? Is that the determination? And I’m not convinced that it is, which is why all these other aspects of the transportation-as-a-service business model are going to be really important.
Kate: I think what you pointed out is important, about Lyft and Uber both becoming transportation businesses, not ride-hailing companies and I think their long-term visions involve scooters, bikes, autonomous vehicles, all sorts of different models of transportation beyond just car sharing.
Kirsten: I hate to be wishy-washy here and say, I don’t know, but I do really think that it’s going to come down to a variety of items all coming together. It’s just not going to be enough for Lyft to scale up its ride-hailing business. And I should point out that Uber should be treated in some ways the same way, but there are some distinct differences. But it’s important for us to think of Lyft as a transportation-as-a-service business. I mean they say in their prospectus that transportation is a massive market opportunity. The hard part of course is turning that into a profit. There might be opportunity there.
So there’s this asset-light business that they have right now, which is the ride-hailing, but then they are making acquisitions in the micromobility space and that is going to become more capital intensive. And that’s going to force them to change their business. And then there’s the autonomous vehicle piece. And then finally, I actually think that one of the pieces of their S1 that has really not received much attention at all is what they’re pursuing in terms of public transportation. And they have said that they, and Uber, intend on being a piece of the public transit ecosystem.
Now that doesn’t mean that they’re going to necessarily be operating buses, but there are people that I’ve talked to in the industry who actually feel like, in Uber’s case, they want to control every mode of transportation. For Lyft, I see them seeing more of the opportunity financially with the data piece and becoming more of a platform and becoming that one-stop shop where you use an app to figure out if you want to use the scooter or a bike, or ride-hailing or buy that ticket for the L in Chicago or the Bart System.
So I really think that the public transit piece often gets ignored and cities are having so much more control now and weighing in. We see this in New York City with congestion pricing. It’s going to force Lyft and Uber to take advantage of these opportunities and use their platform in a way that perhaps accelerates faster than they had intended.
Kate: I’m very interested in the public transportation element, but I’m also very skeptical of the scooters and bikes in the future for Lyft, I think, given the unit economics, I certainly wouldn’t rely on them to be Lyft’s path to profitability. I think autonomous vehicles are a much more interesting path towards profitability. So a lot of companies, Uber, Lyft, Waymo and more are focusing on autonomous vehicles and their development, whether that be with hardware or software. How does Lyft’s strategy with autonomous vehicles differentiate from some of their competitors or does it does differentiate?
Kirsten: It does differentiate, and the funny thing is, is that so you don’t see micromobility necessarily as the oath to profitability and are interested in AVs and I write about AVs, but I see that AVs as a harder path to profitability in a way because of the nuts and bolts that it takes to develop them.
So just to weigh in really quickly on the micromobility piece and then I’ll move on to AVs; To show the opportunity but also the volatility in a real-world example for micromobility, I was in Austin for South by Southwest, I think you were there too, and you probably saw scooters everywhere, right? 18 months ago there were no scooters or bike share in the city. Then bike share came first.
Image via Flickr / Austin Transportation / http://bit.ly/2FNUs6w
And I was talking to that mayor of Austin and one of the folks from Spin, which is a Ford owned business, and they told me something that was really remarkable that I hadn’t thought about, which was that scooters were disrupting the bike share business. So bikes share came in and then scooters came in and all of a sudden they’re pulling bikes off the streets because no one was using them or were not using them at the same level as scooters.
Lyft is going to go through these same exact growing pains and people are figuring out what works. And as you mentioned, the unit economics are an issue, the wear and tear on the scooters alone is driving up costs and driving down revenues certainly, but pretty much making it very difficult to make a profit on it.
But that’s a near term business, right? So it’s at least generating revenue right now. On the other hand, you have this other piece, which is the AV piece. Lyft is doing some really interesting things on the AV piece — they kind of have a two-prong approach.
So they basically created a ton of partnerships to use their platform. So this started a couple of years ago and companies like Aptiv, drive.ai, even Waymo and nuTtonomy, which Aptiv just recently bought about a year ago and GM, and Lyft basically allows developers to use their platform and connect to their autonomous vehicle and offer these rides.
And the best example of this, if you’ve been to CES or if you have been to Las Vegas I should say more specifically, is this partnership that Lyft has with Aptiv — and Aptiv as a tier one supplier, they used to be called Delphi, they spun out, they bought nuTonomy, and they’re Aptiv now. And this is taking Aptiv automated BMW, which are on the Lyft network. If you hail a ride, you might be asked if you want a self-driving car, or “are you okay with a self-driving car?” And they have a safety driver, no humans have been pulled away from it yet. But they provided about 35,000 rides since I want to say January 2018.
Then they’re also doing Level 5, a dedicated self-driving vehicle division that launched in 2017. And here they’re basically creating an open self-driving system or open SDS. On top of that, they have partnered with Magna, an auto parts producer, to develop these self-driving systems that can be manufactured at scale.
And so you just see a rush of partnerships and sort of dual approaches and all of that costs a lot of money. And I can’t emphasize the amount of money that it costs or will cost to develop these systems and deploy them commercially. And I hear from other companies figures like $5 billion to get self-driving vehicles. So developing the full stack, doing fleet management, maintenance, all of that — that’s a lot of money. And, I’m not sure where Lyft, will get that capital, will they get it from the open market or will they have to go and ask for more capital.
Kate: So when do you think then that Lyft will be able to commercialize autonomous vehicles?
Kirsten: The timeline? So depending on who you talk to, you can hear from any of these developers between five years and 30 years. I think it’s important to talk about language and how we talk about autonomous vehicles. So to be clear, there is currently not a single commercial autonomous vehicle deployment where a human being or safety driver has been pulled away from the wheel. It just doesn’t exist.
There are plenty of pilots and Waymo is probably considered the leader in that list, though it is a bit of a confusing one for me because they have so many partnerships and they’ve become competitors to some of those partnerships. The analogy I use is “Survivor,” the reality show. Everyone wants to make these alliances so they don’t get voted off the island.
And now we’re at that point where autonomous vehicle development has entered what we call the trough of disillusionment, which is heads down, “let’s get away from the hype, let’s do the hard work.” And I think we’re going to see a lot of those partnerships and headwinds really come up in the next year, 18 months. So to put a target date on Lyft, it’s really going to depend on which one of those partnerships really play out and are real. I think the one with Aptiv seems the most real to me based on what I know the company is doing and I can see them doing a lot more pilots in the next 18 months.
Does that mean commercial deployment without a human safety driver behind the wheel? I’m not sure I can see a lot more these pilots with a human safety driver expanding beyond Las Vegas. I see pilots happening absolutely in the next year to 18 months. The issue is going to be when is that human safety driver going to be pulled out and with which partner.
Kate: So should we open it up to questions again?
Caller Question: Hi, I was just wondering how we should think about the regulatory risks that might exist as these companies expand to new cities, new markets, or even the public transport use case you mentioned. Thanks.
Kirsten: The regulatory piece is an interesting one. Let’s talk about ride-hailing first. We’ve already seen the regulatory environment, in cities, push back against companies like Uber and Lyft. I think the congestion pricing model that just launched in New York City is going to be one to watch and could be something that will put pressure on, on businesses like Lyft.
Kate: I agree and just to speak, quickly on the scooters; I think the narrative around scooters has been pretty dominated by how cities have forced them out or cities push these strict regulatory barriers on them. And I think that’s still playing out very much. There are even some scooter providers that have had to pull out of cities that they worked very hard to get into in the first place. So I think that has slowed down some of the growth there. And given that Lyft has micromobility as such a key part of their road to profitability, I think that’s partially why I am a little bit skeptical of how that’s gonna play out.
Kirsten: One thing we’ve found, and something to consider for Uber as well, in the future, if any of these AV developers end up, filing for IPOs on their own — there’s been chit chat about Waymo someday doing that or GM cruise someday— the implications for all of these companies and their relationship with cities should not be ignored or undervalued.
And I think you see a bit of that playing out with the present day track we have, which is the ride-hailing scooters and bike share cities and transit agencies or the DOT of different counties finding that they are in a more powerful position than they’ve ever been before. And they are exerting that power.
And so you will see instances like Los Angeles where they have put forth a mandatory data sharing component if you want to operate in their city. This raises some privacy concerns by the way, but it also adds another cost to a company or certainly forces them to look at their business a little bit differently.
Then you start talking about AVs and where are they will operate, how they will operate, where are they will park, what type of vehicle will be allowed in the urban center. In places like Europe, there are strict emissions rules, so that’s going to go to an AV or hybrid profile. And it’s important to think about what that regulatory framework might be and acknowledge the fact that it’s really a mishmash.
There are voluntary guidelines on the federal level right now, but there were no mandates. And so it’s really left up to the cities, counties and states to decide how an AV might be deployed. It’s going to mean probably more lobbyists in DC working with federal folks to ensure that their business doesn’t get hamstrung as a result as well as more of a presence in those cities and states and counties.
But Kate, I’m wondering what is your view from a startup perspective? Do you think of Lyft as a startup anymore are they acting like a startup or are they acting like a company that could handle all of these different complicated, various challenges? I mean, we’ve got pricing pressure, regulatory pressure or you’ve got AV development, opportunities with scooters and all this other stuff. So are they acting like a company that is able to handle this?
Image via Getty Images / Jeff Swensen
Kate: That’s an interesting question. I mean, they’re definitely not a startup anymore by, by anybody’s definition. You maybe could have still used that word, if they were still private, but even then, I know many people would yell at you for using that term for a company worth $15 billion. But now it’s a public company. It’s not a startup. I don’t think they’re acting like a startup, no. I think that they are mature in the way that they’re handling all of these different, so-called paths to profitability.
But we need to wait and see. Let’s see how this year goes, let’s see how they handle all the criticism that they’re going to undoubtedly take from Wall Street or from everyone who’s either interested in buying or just taking a seat and watching how the stock favors and then we’ll know what kind of lessons they took from all those years as a private company. Then we can decide if their behavior is really that of a mature public company.
Kirsten: I do want to make one point that I think is an interesting one on Lyft’s strategy versus Uber is in terms of AVs. Let’s all put a big asterisk that says no, AVs are still a ways out. It is important to note the Lyft and Uber’s strategies for AVs are wildly different and Uber does not take this dual approach. Uber is throwing a ton of capital towards developing their own, self-driving stack and also they’ve done, some acquisitions as well.
They’ve also had quite a bit of trouble. Last year Uber had the first self-driving vehicle fatality that happened in Tempe, Arizona, which looked like it was going to derail their self-driving unit, but it did not. They’re back, testing in a very limited way, but Lyft’s is all about what they call the democratization of autonomous vehicles.
And we can look at that as marketing speech, but I do think that it’s important to look at those words because it shows what their business model is. Their business model is partnerships, alliances, opening up the platform and casting the widest net possible. What I’m very interested to find out is which approach will end up being the winner. It’s going to be a very long game. It’s not going to be anything that’s going to be determined in the next year. I think what Lyft’s proven is that when they look like they’re down and out, they come back.
We’ll see what the better approach is. Do you do everything in-house and launch your own robo-taxi service? Or take capital partners on or do the Lyft approach, with multiple partners? Are partnerships actually too complicated? As someone who covers the startup world, do you have a thought on which one might work or not?
Kate: I have no idea which will work better and I’m sort of excited to see where this all goes, especially as Uber and Lyft are now going to be public.
That’s a good spot to end the call on.
Kirsten: Thanks so much for joining. Thanks again for being Extra Crunch subscribers, we really appreciate it. Bye everyone.

Image via GettyImages / maybefalse
Image via Flickr / Austin Transportation / https://www.flickr.com/photos/austinmobility/41536051644/in/album-72157669223418248/
