The thing that kills me is that Mattson knows. He knows that Greg betrayed them, which means Tom had to not just convince Mattson to keep a Greg who was useless but who they both liked, Tom had to convince Mattson to keep a Greg who had just almost lost them the deal. In business world, that’s a Greg who had just tried to kill them. That’s the guy Tom puts an imperial purple sticker on.

No Montreal house. I wonder if Logan resented how the city had changed as much as my own ex-Montrealer dad did.

Ken trying so hard to be his father is what breaks him and his ambition in the end; mostly because he forgets that he is not actually Logan. He’s made in his image sure, but he’s not made of the same stuff.
He is literally reopening wounds someone else has caused to emulate the violence his father used to inflict and it works, at least for a moment, it works.
In that moment Kendall and Roman both forget that they are not father and son, but brothers, forget that the hierarchy they emulate is just make believe.
Shiv sees right through it though, she’s still on the outside like she always was, her pretense is fitting into the narrative as anything other than woman(wife and mother) and she can’t fool herself any longer.
She rejects Kendall as the living memory of her father and when Kendall retaliates it’s enough to pull Roman out of his daze. (I think this is the first time Roman actually fights for someone else without an ulterior motive at play; he’s done with the corporate familial charade)
Shiv returns to the role that has been assigned to her: The woman behind the man.
She would’ve always ended up crowning someone else, her choice has always been limited to which man she would back, because she is allowed a voice, but not allowed to lead.
So she picks Tom, she knows Tom. She picked him years ago.
Shiv using the strings she has access to to promote Tom’s position within the firm is exactly what she used to do when we first met her. In a way she’s right where she wanted to be when the show started, her plan worked.
She made her husband what she wasn’t allowed to be.
(What she couldn’t have been, because she was never allowed to learn the trade in the first place)
This isn’t the end of an era, it’s just the same as it always was; a different head to wear the crown, but it’s still one of the guys; the women are relegated to the background once again, useful enough and important enough that the first people Tom wants to see, or decides to keep around, are women, but none of them are allowed to hold tangible power in their own right.
In the end Shiv is the only sibling that cuts herself down enough to successfully fit the role assigned to her in her father's world.
She's the woman behind the man, kingmaker, but not king, mother and wife, she is the bloodline
Ken is nothing now, because in the end he couldn't exert influence like his father could, he couldn't take the crown on his own, so no one handed it to him
Roman probably will find some niche, he's been brought up to follow, even if he doesn't want to see himself like that; he'd rather see himself as nothing
Connor, well, unattached to the machinations of the company, of the family, like he always was; He never fit the narrative, so Logan didn’t even bother to assign him a role he could fit himself into.

got sad today thinking of the parallel between Nathan feeling stuck with the band in aotd and Pickles feeling like he's got nothing if he doesn't have the band in Dethdinner (S4E10).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the fact that (for a moment, at least) the band meant shit to Nathan while for Pickles it was everything he had is uuugh i'm sorry i just Love when two characters are really the two sides of the same coin.
and it's so consistent with their characters too! Nathan has a loving supporting family and he kinda desires a simple happy life ("what regular people have") while Pickles despises his family (because they're assholes to him) and never shows interest in anything outside his present lifestyle with Dethklok.
by Dethdinner Pickles had already cut ties with everyone in his family, the last being his mom who he told to go fuck herself. in that episode (motherklok, S4E4) he's even shown to not even care about career/professional success, all he cares about is people appreciating him. all he wanted was for his mom to stop treating him like shit and finally acknowledge the things that he's doing or at the very least trying to do. and despite Nathan destroying the album and not apologizing as he continued to take the drummer for granted, Pickles kept going and going. only at the very end of the antepenultimate episode of the last season Pickles breaks down and quits. and of course he does. he no longer feels comfortable in the band and is not willing to continue being overlooked. but he says it, very clearly and very sadly: he's got nothing left. the band was everything he had.
and for fuck's sake, he even gives Nathan a chance to make things right. one apology, one single apology and he would go back to the band without a second thought. you see how desperate this man is for the smallest amount of appreciation from the only people left in his life??? yes don't even get me started on how it's visible in SnB II how hurt Pickles is when his ex-bandmates and ex-FRIENDS got a restraining order on him and everything. all this makes it even more painful when he calls Nathan greedy and how he just "takes and takes". yes they are both in the most famous band in the world and all but in Pickles mind Nathan still has so much more than him.
in summary yeah i was happy when Pickles slapped Nathan in aotd and the latter finally acknowledged once again the band's importance to him. good shit.
