Possibly the most famous unproduced playset ever, most likely as Kenner showed it on the back of every third wave cardback: Darkseid's Tower Of Darkness!!

This might have been the final item in production when the line was canceled in late 1985; we know that at least some of it made it into tooling and that a few full samples were done at both Kenner and the factory. Three distinct color schemes have shown up as well: the dark blue one featured in Kenner's '86 Toy Fair catalog and on packaging, a sales sample that has purple plastic, and a light blue resin one that was painted with a super detailed non-production scheme and only recently posted to Facebook by Chris Fawcett (you can see lots more detailed images on @geeks_antiques IG page.)

The Tower playset was roughly based on Jack Kirby's designs that appeared in the new pages he tacked on to the Baxter reprint New Gods series in 1984, after being refined in-house by Kenner. They had earlier designed but never produced a playset for "Darkseid's Bunker" that was considered for the first wave.

There was one other item that didn't make it, even though it got just as far as the TOD: the All Terrain Trapper vehicle! Oddly, this made the cardbacks, but WASN'T featured in the '86 catalog or the suggested plan-o-gram for stores. Of course, by the time wave three was being solicited the line had already been canceled, so Kenner might have been cutting their losses even then. Today is the day! You can preorder these now at @bigbadtoystore !! • @toyotter - Here's a look at the full set of wave one of the Longbox Heroes Collection! In the style of the old Action Guide toy booklets that used to be packed in with toys, back in the day. And head to freshmonkeyfiction.com for all the details. And here's the low-down: this isn't a Kickstarter, but it basically functions as one. We need to hit the minimum orders for each figure to be able to put them into production. That means that some figures may not make it into the final mix if they don't get close to their numbers. We obviously want to make ALL of these, but a huge part of making that happen is getting the word out to potential collectors. So we need YOUR help! If you like these and want to see them become a reality, please please please help us spread the word. We are sending Press Releases out tomorrow (there will be a link to them here, then) to everyone we possibly can, but every re-post, re-tweet, share, etc. gives us that much better a chance to see this over the finish line. Pre-Orders will be open for roughly 8 weeks, but historically you can see the momentum from the first couple of weeks. So this is when it counts the most! So Kenner...superheroes... One of the most infamous sets of toys that never made it to consumers, Kenner had A LOT of stuff in the works for future waves when Super Powers got the axe during wave three's production run.

And what they were working on for wave four are among the most heartbreaking news for collectors ever since they were first revealed to the world. First with the pics of the Man-Bat prototype

Already fully sculpted were DC Comics characters Man-Bat, Shockwave, and El Dorado along with the Kenner created Silicon and Quadrex. Swipe to see the "works-like" models for the last two that Kenner's engineering dept made to show how their action features would work by using existing figures as a proof of concept. And if you think I left anything out...just wait a few days.

Kenner wasn't just working on future waves for the Super Powers Collection when the line was killed, they were also deep into a new subline: Power Plus deluxe figures! Utilizing existing tooled parts from some of the existing figures, the PP figures all featured electronics or light features.

A new armored Darkseid, Technoskin Cyborg, Kryptonite Cape Superman, Capture Winch Batman, Fireflash Firestorm and Bat Blade Robin were joined by Rocketman, who was based on the Super Friends version of Steve Trevor. The Wonder Twins were also possible entries, with either interchangeable torsos or snap-on features.

I mocked up the final figures on this first pic, but swipe to see the parts that got tooled (Robin wasn't started yet and Cyborg only had his battery pack finished before the line was axed.) There's another works-like mockup for Superman's glider cape over a Green Lantern figure.
