essie (32) — born in silver creek, a town near sweetwater and machias, but moved to boston when she was very young. a schoolmaster's daughter when she was young, with a bloody streak a mile wide. determined, confident, skilled with a knife.

Leo was born to people that had no business having kids. His father was a man whose main motivations in life were money and power, and his mother was a vapid socialite who was only concerned with numbing whatever abuse was hurtled towards her with a gin martini and a couple of puffs of grass. They needed a son, and so they had a son... but whatever parental responsibilities that came with it, they've ignored.

By consequence, Leo grew up under the watchful eyes of several nannies, each lasting nothing more than a year before deciding that he was the devil's spawn. A brat seeking attention, too smart for his own good and unafraid to act on it.

They called him their Little Prince, the sole heir to their obscenely large and most definitely unethical oil business. "Blood money is still money, Leo. I advise you don't bite the hand that feeds you." His father would often remind him.

When Leo is twenty, a mine collapses on fourteen workers. His parents cover up the scandal by paying off the media and the local government. At dinner, his father and mother laugh over a suckling pig, shrugging their shoulders at the way that in this business, death is an inevitability.

He's engaged to a wealthy heiress at twenty five. As if it were a sign, another mine collapses. His father smacks him with the back of his hand when he talks back during dinner over another suckling pig, the gaudy ruby on his ring leaving a slice against his cheek... it doesn't sting. All he can think about are the following: He doesn't want to marry, his parents are evil human beings and he was standing on the bodies of men and women seemingly too unimportant for his parents to give a shit. In a savage display, he bites the hand. He bites it as hard as he can till he feels blood on the tip of his tongue.

He leaves that night with nothing but small bag stuffed to the brim with his mother's jewels that he's stolen, two books and the clothes on his back.

The middle is relatively uneventful. He jumps from town to town till he finally lands in Sweetwater. It's too far off the grid for his parents to find him, and its busy enough for him to blend into the walls, easily one of the least interesting things in town.

He knows his parents are still out there. Looking for him... but when that day comes, he'll be prepared. Don't bite the hand. His father had said... little do they know, Leo sharpens his canines just in case the opportunity arises.

The human presence in the modern city borders in National City may have begun at least the year 130,000, according to the rumor proven by the Cerutti Mastodon site. Archaic period sites were discovered along Sweetwater River which runs through the city boundaries of today's National City. Before the entry by the Spanish into the area that the is now National City occupies was part of the territory of the Diegueno tribe, also called Kamai, then Kumeyaay. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, there was a Kumeyaay village that was located north of the modern National City boundaries, on Chollas Creek.    Frank Kimball first brought novelty and change to the area by building his personal residence. The house had a bathtub as well as hot flowing water, making it the first modern home in the entire county. However, it was much more than his own innovative efforts that allowed the region to prosper. In the process of constructing the first railroad and roads in the area that is now National City, Frank and his brothers most notably were in charge of introducing modern transportation to the people of the town. The brothers also implemented the city's first post office and a wharf that was used for exports and imports to the ocean. These large ventures, coupled with smaller personal ventures each contributed to the overall goal of creating a community that was unique for the time. One of the most lasting relics of Kimballs Kimballs is the trees they brought in and planted from Europe and Asia that they managed to accomplish through an agreement in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. These trees are dotted throughout the city today.

THE ROAD TO BETHLEHEM © 2024 – G. Smith (BMI) ====================== Born in New Manchester, west of Atlanta, Raised in the mill there on Sweetwater Creek. He and his brothers worked sun-up to sunset, In hand-me-down breeches and no shoes on their feet.

They spun cotton to fabric, and bunches of yarn, Inside the walls built of hand fired brick. The largest mill in the state, with an internal wheel, Connecting drive shafts through walls three feet thick.

The road to Bethlehem led him through bedlam, Following the bugle call and the beat of the drum. Life had its rhythm, life had its rhyme And the water turned the wheel around marking the time. The water turned the wheel around, marking the time.

Trouble was brewing far away from his home, Who started the fighting, nobody would say. At seventeen he kissed his sweet mama, Marched off to Virginia and entered the fray.

From Seven Pines to Gettysburg, It was fight or be killed, ‘til he was wounded, On Little Round Top hill.

The road to Bethlehem led him through bedlam, Following the bugle call and the beat of the drum. Life had its rhythm, life had its rhyme And the water turned the wheel around marking the time. The water turned the wheel around, marking the time.

They took him prisoner, They took his left arm, They sent him back home when He’d do them no harm.

It took him a year, but he came back to New Manchester, Now just a ruin, burned to the ground. No one was left, they’d been moved to Kentucky, Nothing but ashes were left to be found.

And his road to Bethlehem led him through bedlam, Following the bugle call and the beat of the drum. Life had its rhythm, life had its rhyme Still the waters flowed past, marking the time. The waters flow past just marking the time.

================= If I may... New Manchester is, or was, an actual place, on the current site of Georgia's Sweetwater Creek State Park. It was razed during Sherman's "March to the Sea" because of the mill, which was deemed a "war industry." Those who remained, mostly women, small children, and old men, were taken to Kentucky, and few were ever reunited with family not present when the town was fired. A few of those who "followed the bugle call..." did return but did not - could not - stay.

Kittens

There were no kittens in my early life . . . Navy housing, and the first opportunity was when the folks bought a home on 2 ½  acres in the Puget Sound area.  Sweetwater Creek along the back of the little place, and a small barn – like our one Guernsey cow, our cats were barn cats, not house cats.  Likewise, when we moved to Trego, we started with Tom – a black and white cat who lived in the barn…
