if you could change one thing about the The Devil Judge, what would you change?

Hello anon.

To be honest, I wouldn't change much. I love this show. Even with my semi conflictual relationship with Ga On, I wouldn't touch him as a character in any way.

Two things thou, I think they could be solved differently:

I wouldn't have resolved two characters' storyline with suicide. It's not necessary out of place, but especially with Sun Ah, felt very convenient. Also, both ladies had the same gun pointed at Yo Han, but somehow decided to point them on themselves... guess who is the protagonist of the show.

Possibly I would change the ambiguity in the relationship between Ga On and Soo Hyun - or maybe I call it so because I don't want to see it as romantic. But it's not even that I don't want to, it's the show telling me that I don't need to - hence the ambiguity. To me thou, his behaviour towards his feelings for her makes sense only by taking a leap on Ga On's sexuality and the duality between what he wants and what he thinks it's right. A bolder show maybe would have confirmed this. A bolder show wouldn't have been able to air on tv then. So. I point my fingers at you S.K.

Hi it’s my first time watching the devil judge and i found ur analysis on each episode after rewatching and i really really love how u put things out just wanted to let u know that i can’t wait for ur analysis on ep13 cuz yohan’s expression when gaon was crying over soohyun totally puzzles me and i wanted to know what u think

Hi, sorry for the late reply. And here are the screenshots of Yohan's expression in Ep 13 - watching as Soohyun died in the arms of Gaon, and Gaon breaking down over her death.

The first was this - the moment when Soohyun had been shot.

I think, at this point, it was mostly shock. The widening of his eyes giving it away, even though the rest of him appeared to be emotionless.

And to me, this indicated how good Yohan was at controlling his expressions. He had years of practice, having to put up a front to hide how he truly felt. And considering that this is such a public place, and at this point, we weren't even sure if the cameras had stopped rolling or that someone might have a phone up and taking pictures. And I think, Yohan clamping down on his emotions till they were barely showing - it was all instinctual. Yet we can still see some degree of shock in him, and that showed how affected he must be.

Next, we have Yohan, the mask that he wore, cracking.

The reddening of his eyes, the wettness in them that shows how much Soohyun, lying there and dying, and nothing could be done to stop it. It had Yohan's heart hurting.

And I think there are many layers to his grief. The first is probably him being reminded of Isaac's death and how helpless he had been at that point in time. Unable to lift up the beam that had pinned Isaac down. Unable to save him at all.

And accompanying that grief. there would have been guilt. That he had survived when Isaac and Cecilia had died. That Elijah had been rendered handicapped while he was still whole and intact. And that is another form of grief - one that eats you up from the inside out.

The 'fiery pit' that Yohan had told Gaon about after Soohyun's burial. And which I feel was what drove Yohan to live the way he did. Only Elijah and revenge were all he had allowed himself to live for. And even if he were to become a monster, a devil, while doing so - it's what he deserved, having survived when others had died.

And Yohan, I think his heart is grieving for Gaon too. Cause he knows exactly how it feels to lose someone so suddenly and so violently. And while Jinjoo had turned her head away and cried, the moment Soohyun had breathed her last. Yohan hadn't.

He had kept his eyes on Gaon, just like he had done so when Gaon had broken down in the prison yard. Watching his every sob, his every wretched cry cause Yohan knows that no amount of words nor hugs could ever console Gaon. And all that he could do - it was to be there, to be the silent witness to Gaon's tears, Gaon's grief. Taking it all in without flinching nor looking away.

Then we have this last shot of him before the episode ends.

I'm not sure if this is the expression you're referring to - the one that got you confused. Cause it did confuse me when I first watched TDJ.

Yohan, he looked cold, even heartless at Soohyun's death. And considering how the previous episodes, they had established the two of them as not being on good terms. It sort of makes you wonder if Soohyun's death - was Yohan thinking only about how it might affect his plans, especially with regards to Gaon.

But knowing how complex Yohan is. I think there is more to it than just that.

Of course, Yohan would definitely think about his revenge first. That will always be his priority after Elijah. And Gaon, now that he is part of his team, despite the huge quarrel they had not long ago. Yohan had to assess whether a distraught Gaon would do anything rash. He is, after all, a pretty emotional and impulsive creature (look at him driving off to strangle the con-artist), and Yohan had to think of safety measures - not just to protect his plans but to protect Gaon, in case he decides to do something stupid.

At the same time, Yohan isn't one to let his emotions take charge of him. Already putting them aside cause they are of little use to him right now.

Focusing instead on why Soohyun had been shot. His mind going through possible motives and suspects. And what tasks he should delegate to his team in order to determine if Soohyun was the real target or merely an unfortunate victim.

And all these, I suspect, had him looking like he didn't care. Not to mention that Yohan, he knew he had to stay calm and in control in order to take care of Gaon who was falling apart. Probably thinking of how he could get Gaon back to the mansion and make him stay put again. And underneath that, Yohan even thinking ahead to the point in time when Gaon, if he wanted revenge, how he could help him get it.

Yohan is a complex person. And I think that last expression of him - others might take it as him being cold-hearted and remorseless. But to me, it's a sign of his strength, which had helped him survive so many shitty things in his life.

➣ for me, this is THE post-canon gahan fic. what stands out for me is while gaon may be awfully lovesick, he doesn’t completely isolate himself - still maintains and forms friendships with people. watching the development of this and the way he heals is EXQUISITE and it’s written EXQUISITELY. the yearning has a wonderful payoff too. it’s just really fucking amazing guys plz read it

➣ As grateful as Ga On is that Soo Hyun rescued him from Bamboo Spear's violent mob, he can tell she's lying when she claims to have heard about it on the police radio. That one simple admission sets off a series of events that Ga On could never have predicted — events that bring out feelings he's done his best to ignore.

The only reasonable explanation for this episode- and bear in mind, this is only because i still have hope in the writer- is that yohan deliberately faked soo hyun's death. What for? Idk. But it's just so annoying to see such an unnecessary death, more so that soo hyun's character is obviously underdeveloped. Whatever it is, i refuse to believe the writer did soo hyun THAT dirty

awhile back i had to read with my own two eyeballs that tdj was trying to show how much yohan was like the president in some round about way to defend gaon as wholesome.

but do you know why the president threw the numbers game back in yohan’s face in ep 13? when he said isn’t it better to rid of 10k people than to let millions others die bc they’re the lesser number of the two, drawing upon yohan’s logic when he explained the bus incident to gaon?

it’s not to show how similar they are. in fact, it’s quite the opposite.

ep 13′s purpose is to show how much yohan’s changed in terms of how he views people. it flashes back to gaon’s words about him pushing away people that are trying to help him. he cares about what’s happened to soyoon. he cares about gaon and about the people that are in his life. he gets angry and has a panic attack when he listens to the president talk about rounding people up and becoming a government state. yohan has always cared (even as a smaller judge), but now we’re seeing it on a larger scale.

he breaks his promise to isaac because he realizes that people he’s hurt and will hurt going forward as he takes down the president and the elite. and even then, yohan was never like the president to begin with anyway. some of his logic might’ve been similar. but it’s what you do with it that matters the most, and yohan only had it in him to go after people involved in isaac’s death and elijah’s hurt and justify punishments of wrongdoers while trying to get there, as much as he could.

yohan couldn’t be further from the president if he tried. and he tries to pinpoint yohan as the same. he tells yohan that the same people that voted him into office and made him popular are the same people that have gathered in support behind yohan, but yohan says “if you insist on testing your luck,” because yohan understands the difference. the intent, the rhetoric, the purpose.

yohan has remained steadfast in what he’s given the public, for years at that point. it’s the president who spiraled, false promises to get elected, then swiftly changed to dialogue that stresses dystopia-like ideologies. yohan did what he did for his sake and in his own corner but never tried to jeopardize innocents.

i’m also tired af right now, so i know what i’m trying to say isn’t coming off the best way. but to some degree, i hope this makes sense, lmao.

You know, it’s been a month since the finale but i’m still on TDJ brainrot and thinking about

1. Does Gaon knew Yohan get shot, and K was killed

2. Does Gaon knew Yohan was the who called Soohyun to save him

3. Will Gaon ever see Elijah’s painting of him

4. How did Yohan knew where and when to save Gaon from the bomb (and the conversation that follows to this information)

5. What are their internal thoughts on the last scene of the series, or like what was their direction on script??? (You know the filming script and the original script are different)

6. What’s going on in Yohan’s head when he heard Gaon said “I’ll go with you”

7. And when Yohan realized that Gaon has been manipulated all along that made him looked at Gaon and said “Gaon-ah” just before the professor left

8. Or when he heard Gaon said “If you want to kill me just do it”

9. Oh and the dinner scene from ep. 9!! I really want to know what Yohan was thinking. From the smile in the car after the call, and when they ate together at the dinner table

10. Where’s Elijah in all of their fights?? Did she heard it? What was her reaction?

11. I want to know the detail on how Gaon get shipped inside that box!!

12. How long has it been since Yohan’s prison death was announced to the bombing event

13. What was the reason they always muted the audio when Gaon scream Yohan’s name??

14. I want to know what Yohan thinks when he saw Gaon breakdown and crying in ep 7, ep 13 and ep 14

15. In ep 12, Gaon left on foot. So...... did they really went to work together ever since he stayed at Kang’s Mansion??

16. What was the file Cha Kyunghee hide in her cigar?
