If Trump just drops dead now or at any point in the future, would that be of any use to the rest of us or will it not matter? I don't think there any Republicans that could come close to harnessing his chaotic filth other than maybe his sons, who come off as even slower, dimwitted morons with none of the excitement his base seems to thrive on.

Hmmm, ok so that is an interesting question.  Because Trump is both a huge advantage for Republicans and a massive disadvantage for them simultaneously.  

 So what advantages does Trump bring to the party? 

1) Unique voters.  A bunch of Trump voters aren’t even conservative or Republicans, they are just bigoted, anti intellectual and believe in conspiracy theories.  Trump has been proven to have this effect that regardless of people’s political ideology, if they are bigoted, anti intellectual or buy into a conspiratorial world view, they are proven to find Trump attractive.  So if Trump was out of the picture, at least some of these people would just go back to not voting and being awful people.  

2) Unifies the Republican Party.  The Republican Party is made up of about 5-7 unique different factions who are bound together by little more than their general awfulness as people, and since Reagan they have had trouble finding anybody who can unify every part of the problem (Dems have the same issue).  Trump has managed to unify 90% of the party because it turns out the one thing they all have in common is the desire to be an awful human being.  And with Trump gone the party loses that main focus.  I mean if Trump hadn’t run in 2016, I wonder if the party itself might have fallen apart because of how much each forgettable vile Republican candidate hated each other 

3) With his absence, a lot of Republicans might just give up on electoral politics entirely.  The only reason why they are bothering to vote at all is because they are loyal to Trump and he told them too.  If he is gone, they might just stay home and whine.  In fact a lot of them might just stop voting Republican because they are upset the Republican's didn’t end democracy for them.  

4) Trump is a great fundraiser for them especially from small donors

5) Trump is a cult leader so as long as he is in charge, he can get a huge amount of the population of the nation to deblieve any information and accept his alternate reality.  Which is why his support hasn’t really flagged in the last four years, cultists don’t trust any information.  But nobody other than Trump himself can maintain that alternate reality field, if he leaves the picture it falls with him or rather it splits

 So if Trump went away all of those advantages go away, though if he is like assassinated that is likely to back fire as he unifies the party via martyrdom  But if he died of Covid then suddenly that changes the dynamic and really hurts the core of his absurd cult 

So what disadvantages does his bring the party?

1) He unifies and encourages the democrats.  The left hates Trump more than they have hated anybody in US politics, and their presence encourages high Democratic turn out.  So with Trump out of the way, the dems might not come out to vote in massive numbers the way we have been 2018 onwards.  ON the other hand, if Dems do come out and Republicans don’t, then hey we win America

2) He makes it hard for Republicans to do outreach, because Trump alienates a lot of people who don’t already like him, due to how much of a gaping asshole he is 

3) He has caused the Dems to make gains in Suburban areas, educated voters and women, since agian he is a gaping asshole

4) He is a terrible strategist who encourages infighting among Republicans, and drives the republicans to crazy extremes

5) Finally, once he is out of office and no longer can actually run anything, he becomes a lot less dangerous because he dominates the party so much that nobody else can get a word in edgewise.  So as long as he is presence, the party has to obey his random whims rather than anybody else

So Trump leaving would give us some advantages but in someways his sticking around but out of office fucks the Repulican party more.  I think him losing Twitter would be an objective good however.

Joe Biden: He was a senator from Delaware from 1973 to 2009, and ran against Obama in 2008. While he didn’t get the presidency, Biden was picked as Obamas running mate. (The running mate becomes the vice president, who is one step below the president.) Most democrats wanted him to run for office in 2016, although he decided not to.  

Pros: 

He is well respected in the Democratic community. Biden has never endured any major scandals, at least, in comparison to Hilary  

Moderate, which many midwestern swing voters like

Has a reputation for being an easy going guy, kind and friendly

Some republicans might vote for him, since he is moderate and has good character  

Cons

He is see as “too moderate” for many democrats who want to push the party in a more left direction. While they aren’t the majority, they are just big enough to ultimately tilt the election. When Bernie Sanders supporters got angry that he wasn’t the nominee in 2016, many decided to not vote or vote 3rd party just to send the democrats a middle finger. Welp. Look what happened. 

As of right now, he has mainly avoided scandals. However, with the scrutiny of running for presidency, something might come up. 

He’s rather old. At 76, the stress of the presidency could be a lot

Bernie Sanders: Currently a senator from Vermont. Has been in congress since the late 80′s, serving in both houses. Officially, he is an independent, yet his ideology lines with the far left. Ran against Hilary for the 2016 nominee, and my goodness was the whole things a mess. Some of his supporters decided to sit out of the election in protest, thinking it wouldn’t matter because all the polls showed Hillary would become president. Welp.

Pros

Is popular among the millennials, which the democrats need in order to win in 2020

Has pushed the party farther to the left, which many like

Cons:

Many moderates don’t like him because he is so far left. Just like the millennials, we need the moderates voters

Beto O'Rourke: He was the guy from Texas they tried to defeat Cruz. While yes, he didn’t win, he came very close. Graduated from Columbia University, served on the El Paso city committee, and then ran and won a house seat in 2014. As of right now, Beto is currently serving in the house of Representatives for Texas. Many have speculated that he will run for office in 2020

Pros

Not too moderate, yet not too left. He is right in the middle, which is a compromise for both ends of the part.

He seems...real. Many are skeptical of politician’s motives in general, yet with him...he...you can tell he ACTUALLY cares about what he is saying

People often say he is the next Obama. He’s young and charismatic

Cons: 

Too moderate for the left, and too left for the moderates. While he could be a compromise, neither side has really pushed for him

Some say (much like they did in 2008 with Obama) that Beto is too Inexperienced 

I should note something about the three above: they are all white guys. This has been criticized, being that more dems want more diversity 

Elizabeth Warren: She has been in the senate for the past six years. Before that, she taught Law the University of Pennsylvania.

Pros

She is far left, which excites Bernie’s base 

Warren is a strong woman who won’t put up with any bs

Cons:

Just like Bernie, many moderates fear she is too far left

This is’n’t her fault, yet sexism plays a a role. People didn’t believe Hilary should be  president because “women should stay home”. Fortunately, the people saying this are mainly republicans. 

Kamala Harris: She has been the San Francisco District Attorney, the California Attorney General, and is currently a senator for California. Kamala, like Beto, are new to the national spot light. In 2016, If you asked anyone (not in Texas or California) who Kamala and Beto were, most people wouldn’t know. Two years later, and they are two fo the rising stars of the democratic party

Pros:

Hasn’t had any scandals for the most part 

Kamal is half Indian (the country) and half Jamaican woman. Many see her as the representation of the democratic parties future: young and very diverse

Cons:

Many people know her name, yet not where she stands

She has to deal with both racism and sexism. Although, it isn’t too much of a problem since most people who are like that don’t vote democrat 

Ironically, none of the above have declared that they will run in the 2020 presidential election. This thing is seen as a Mexican Stand Off, with everyone looking at each other, yet no one want’s to make the first move. 

For me, as long as we have at least a moderate democrate who isn’t corrupt and/or insane, I’m fine.

That being said, I would like to see Beto becoming president in 2020

A midterm night’s dream

So as my American followers know, we have an election tomorrow. Rather exciting isn’t it? I can say I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the run up to this one, though it took a while to really get going.

Anyway, before we all go to the polls, I’d like to share a rather...interesting experience I had last week.

(Also a thousand apologies to Jonathan Pie, whose writings this story is ripping off inspired by).

The story begins last week, November the 1st. It had been a busy day. It was the day after Halloween which meant everyone was rushing to put away the pumpkins and deck the halls, gamers everywhere were getting ready for the start of Blizzcon the next day (only to be inevitably disappointed when Blizzard pulled a Konami) and the entire internet had learned what I had known for years; the most powerful Smasher was The Pink Nightmare.

But it had also been a very busy few months. The Midterm Elections had been circled on many an American’s calendar ever since January 20, 2017. A lot of things had been happening in the American political sphere this year, and there was a palpable sense of anticipation for the Midterms, and for good reason. This was, in many ways, the first major referendum on the job performance of Donald Trump. 

So as you can imagine, this particular election was being framed as “The Most Important Election Ever.” But seeing as how the same thing had been said about the last several elections, I knew that for better or worse it would most likely be back to business as usual once it was over (for what passes as “usual” these days).

So on that day I had returned home from work, and when I opened my mailbox I was delighted to see my absentee ballot inside. Truth be told, I don’t really care much for standing in line at the polls and given that my ballot this year had quite a lot of things on it to consider, I really didn’t feel like standing in a voting booth for a good 30 minutes. 

Even so, ever since I turned 18 I’ve never missed a chance to participate in our democratic process, and I wasn’t going to start now.

Now I know what you’re all thinking. How did I intend to vote? Well, this was a bit of a tricky proposition for me. I try my best to be an informed voter, reading up on the candidates and their stances on the issues and deciding for myself who’s platform I agree with more.

But this time I was going purely on instinct, and my instinct was to vote straight-ticket Democrat. Which really felt strange because, historically, my instinct has always been to do the opposite of whatever Michael Moore tells me to do.

I parked my car and opened the door to my house, with a spring in my step and my ballot in my hand. I was confident in my conviction that, despite some reservations, voting for the Dems in this election was the only sensible choice to make. And I knew it was the right choice, because my Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr feeds had been saying the same for months. Anyone who was anyone was telling me that only a racist, idiot or Russian spy would vote for the GOP in this election, so it must be true.

And besides, I had conjured up a fantasy in my head of Trump being so irate at a Democratic controlled house that he instantly resigned the Presidency out of spite.

This was going to be easy.

Well, it had been a long day at work, and it’s not a good idea to vote when your mind is fatigued. So I decided a quick nap was in order; and afterwards I would be refreshed and rejuvenated and ready to do my civic duty as a citizen of the Republic.

I set the ballot down on the counter and sprawled out on the couch and closed my eyes. I was home alone, and thus I felt no particular reservations about napping in the living room.

And then, something happened.

A voice began to speak to me. I became apprehensive and frightened. Who was it that was speaking? Was it my conscience? Was it God? Was it the first signs of schizophrenia?

Either way, I instantly knew who was addressing me. 

It was the voice...of Princess Luna.

Now, don’t be alarmed. As long time followers know, I am an OG Brony. And as such, I occasionally experience visitations from the denizens of Equestria during times of emotional distress. Whether it’s Twilight Sparkle giving me encouragement before finals, Rainbow Dash assuring me that neither the last launch of the Space Shuttle nor the 2017 Solar Eclipse will be clouded out, or Vinyl Scratch giving me some companionship on those cold Winter nights, I’ve just gotten used to it.

But this was the first time I’d been visited by Princess Luna. The lunar regent herself! The only pony who’s presence in a dream actually made sense!

Time slowed, I sat up on the couch, rubbing my eyes blearily. But Luna remained standing in front of me, having adopted a humanoid form for a variety of Freudian reasons. Once again she began to speak.

“My friend, what troubles you?”

I sighed.

“I’m confused.”

An expression of sympathy crossed her face as she put a hand on her chest.

“Of course you’re confused. How can you not be? Everyone is confused. Because the only thing the media is talking about is what this means for Donald Trump.

“But there’s something missing. Information. How can you possibly make a decision if you’re not properly informed?”

She sat down beside me, taking my hand in hers.

“You and your fellow citizens have a tough choice to make. The GOP’s stance on immigration has been reprehensible, and Trump’s wish to mobilize troops is practically a Kent State-style situation waiting to happen. But despite his overtones, those migrants are not turning around. What happens to them when they get to the border? What happens if Trump ends birthright citizenship? And what about legal immigrants?  If you sustain immigration at its current levels, what will happen to public services? Will Medicaid be able to cope?

“The economy is doing rather nice. Historically speaking, a good economy bodes well for the ruling party. But what about Trump’s trade war with China? Or the tax bill? Trump has often used the stock market as an indicator of how the economy is doing, but it lost nearly $2 trillion last month alone!

“And there’s so many other issues to consider as well. Will LGBT rights continue to be protected? Will your foreign policy change? Will gun rights be protected? There’s a lot to consider here.”

I held up a hand. “I know all these things, Luna. Why are you telling me this?”

“Because, you know the Republicans plans for these things. But, tell me my friend, have you heard anything from the Democrats about how they plan to handle issues?”

I paused. I thought about her question and realized she was right. I’ve heard how my local candidates would approach those issues, but in terms of a unified strategy from the Democrats? 

I’d heard nothing. 

Other than-

“All you’ve heard from the Democrats is that you need to vote for them so they can stop Trump. And yes, that very well could happen, but to what end?” Luna asked, finishing my thought.

She stood up and faced me.

“The real problem is nobody wants to admit that they don’t know what will happen if things stay as they are for two more years, let alone what will happen if there’s significant opposition to the President. Your country has never had a President like this before.

“The GOP says that they’ll advocate for Conservative views and values instead of constantly kissing Trump’s ring. But recent history tells us that’s not going to happen. Furthermore, the GOP has traditionally been in favor of a smaller government and a weaker executive branch, and now you’re in a position where the traditional Republican argument is being made by Democrats. And because everyone thinks that the GOP is a bunch of racists, Libertarians like yourself are scared of being labeled Pro-Trump by default!”

Luna began to pace around the room as she started to talk of fear. “This whole debate, if you can call it a debate, has been about causing fear!” she cried. And every time she said the word “fear”, she spoke in her Royal Canterlot Voice.

“The Democrats say that your democracy will be undermined by Trump’s authoritarian tendencies. Fear. 

“Trump says that America will be overrun by caravans of migrants and masses of illegal aliens if the Republicans lose. Fear.

“Barack Obama says the character of your country is on the ballot. Fear.

“The GOP is not only ramping up the threat of illegals, but that a Democratic majority would wreck the economy. Fear or fear? Would you like some fear with your fear?!”

Luna paused. I sat upright, riveted to my seat.

“The level of debate during this process has been terrifying! It has exposed everything that is wrong with modern political discourse. Jane Fonda compared Trump to Hitler, as if that comparison has never been made about any politician since 1945, yet Fox News claims that liberal donors would rather the Democrats start a nuclear war, if that was the case then why would anyone vote for a party who could potentially destroy the planet? 

“Emma Gonzalez says that the lives of high school students depend on who is elected, and Trump says a vote for Democrats is a vote for MS-13 to run wild. I always thought school shootings and MS-13′s criminal activities would happen regardless of who was in office, but no, silly me, apparently the GOP is allowing people to gun down kids, while paradoxically MS-13 supports more gun control legislation! Once again, a national political debate has descended into FARCE! ”

Luna’s voice reached a fever pitch. It felt like the entire world shook with the reverberation of each syllable.

“The right has completely abandoned its principles in favor of supporting a man with an ego the size of a planet and the intelligence of a gnat! And the left has made it all about personality over politics, emotion over logic, which is a laugh seeing as their candidate in the last election lacked both of those things!”

“This is the choice your country faces!” Luna exclaimed, her eyes burrowing into my soul and her voice shattering every molecule of air around me. “Vote for Democrats and you’re supporting Identity Politics! Vote for Republicans and you’re supporting Statism! IDENTITY POLITICS OR STATISM! FUCK ME, WHAT A CHOICE! YOU MIGHT AS WELL BE STUCK BETWEEN THE WEHRMACHT AND THE RED ARMY!”

The silence was nearly as deafening as the voice it succeeded. I sat there, looking Luna square in the eye, her face seemingly frozen in an intense glare.

And then I could look no more. I put my face into my hands and I wept.

She was correct. For all my enthusiasm and patriotism, we were at a morton’s fork yet again. My hope was that once the 2016 election was over, the polarization would die down as both parties sought to get on with the job. Instead it never ended. The GOP sold out to Trump and the Dems learned nothing from Clinton’s defeat.

“What do I do?” I managed to choke out. “What can I do?”

It was at this point that I felt Luna embrace me. Her arms wrapping around my back, gently rubbing like a mother soothing an upset child. Her head rested on my shoulder, her snout buried in the crook of my neck as she did her best to bring my emotions back to a more reasonable level.

“It’s alright, my friend.” She whispered to me. “You know what you must do...you always have.”

And then I opened my eyes. I was awake, and she was gone.

Even now, nearly a week later, I still can’t get my head around what happened. Sure enough when I woke up, I felt refreshed and in the correct mindset to cast my ballot.

But following the advice of the lunar regent, I abandoned my original plan and instead I took some time to brush up on the candidates and their platforms once more. Then I voted for the candidates that I felt would do the best job.

And I honestly can’t work out how I would’ve voted if I hadn’t taken that nap.

And now it’s your turn. Despite all the polls and predictions, we still have no idea how today is going to turn out. This time however, both sides share blame for the uncertainty. 

What it comes down to is this. We’re nearly 2 years into Donald Trump’s attempt to “Make America Great Again”, but we still don’t know what that means. Maybe I’m being factitious though, because Trump and his hardcore base seems to know what it means. It means an America with walls on the borders and divisions among the populace, an America where you can’t trust anyone (especially any TV channel that isn’t Fox News), an America where potential interference from a hostile power is not only tolerated, but perhaps encouraged.

Doesn’t sound that great to me, but of course you’re free to disagree with that.

But the Democrats aren’t much better. What the hell is their plan for America? Have they thought of anything besides “Impeach Trump?” And what if the Mueller probe comes back and it turns out that even if Russia was running an operation to harm our country and people Trump knew were involved but Trump himself wasn’t, what happens then? Hope he invites a porn star to the Oval Office and do re-enactment the Lewinsky affair?

The problem is no one knows what the Democrat’s plans are, because they have no plan after “Impeach Trump.” In a related story, no one knows what “Make America Great Again” means because no one ever knew what it meant.

And, like it or not, this all falls at the feet of Donald Trump.

We were never supposed to vote for Donald Trump.

You know it, I know it, we all know it. No one thought we would vote for Trump. Even people that voted for Trump didn’t think we’d vote for Trump. That’s why the Democrats were so eager for him to get the nomination and didn’t particularly care that they screwed over Bernie Sanders for an utterly unelectable candidate in Hillary Clinton; they assumed an election against Trump wouldn’t mean a Trump win, but it did and instead we got the single biggest embarrassment of the Democrats since 1968.

Fast forward two years later, and really nothing has changed.

For the last two years, the level of debate has been appalling from both sides of the aisle. Both sides have to take responsibility for this. There haven’t been any facts. There’s been no debate about policy, proposals, nothing. It’s all been about who can say the most alarmist thing or pull off the sneakiest trick and get away with it.

Nothing that has happened over the last two years has been reasonable political debate. It’s more like a dream you have after you’ve done a fifth of Vodka and a No Mercy run on Undertale.

One involving Princess Luna perhaps?

Biden picks Kamala Harris as running mate, adding former 2020 rival to ticket

Joe Biden announced he has chosen California Senator Kamala Harris to be his running mate heading into November’s presidential election, adding his former rival for the Democratic nomination to the ticket.

The Biden campaign made the announcement in a text message to supporters on Tuesday.

“Joe Biden here. Big news: I’ve chosen Kamala Harris as my running mate. Together, with you, we’re going to beat Trump,” the message said, adding a link to Biden’s campaign website.

The Biden campaign announced the two will make their first appearance together on Wednesday at an event in Wilmington, Delaware.

Speaking at the White House on Tuesday, President Trump brought back one of his favorite insults from the 2016 campaign, calling Harris “nasty.” 

“She was very very nasty, to — one of the reasons that surprised me, she was very — she was probably nastier than even Pocahontas to Joe Biden. She was very disrespectful to Joe Biden, and it’s hard to pick somebody that’s that disrespectful,” the president said. 

He also recalled her treatment of his Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, in 2018, during his confirmation hearing. “She was extraordinarily nasty to Kavanaugh. Judge Kavanaugh then — now Justice Kavanaugh,” Mr. Trump said. He added, “I won’t forget that soon.” Harris had pressed Kavanaugh about sexual misconduct allegations leveled at him dating back to high school and college.

Other potential candidates who had been considered for the role immediately praised Biden’s choice. Former U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice called Harris “a tenacious and trailblazing leader who will make a great partner on the campaign trail,” adding that she is “confident that Biden-Harris will prove to be a winning ticket.”

Representative Val Demings, who had also been vetted, said in a statement that Harris’ selection was a historic moment for the country.

“For a little girl who grew up poor, Black and female in the South to be considered during this process has been an incredible honor. I feel so blessed,” Demings said. “To see a Black woman nominated for the first time reaffirms my faith that in America, there is a place for every person to succeed no matter who they are or where they come from.”

Former President Barack Obama said Harris is “more than prepared for the job” and that his former vice president “nailed this decision.”

“By choosing Senator Kamala Harris as America’s next vice president, he’s underscored his own judgment and character,” Mr. Obama said in a statement. “Reality shows us that these attributes are not optional in a president. They’re requirements of the job. And now Joe has an ideal partner to help him tackle the very real challenges America faces right now and in the years ahead.”

Congressman Jim Clyburn of South Carolina, whose endorsement of Biden before the South Carolina primary was crucial to his win, said he was “very pleased” that Harris was selected. “Today is one more chapter in this country living out its true creed that all men, and in this instance women, are created equal,” Clyburn said. “Those of us who have been battling for years now trying to get this country forward toward a more perfect union, are very, very pleased with today.”

Harris, 55, was widely seen as an early favorite for the position even before the vetting process began. The only Black woman serving in the Senate, Biden’s historic announcement means Harris is also the first Black woman to be selected as a major party’s vice presidential candidate. The path to her selection was not an easy one, however.

During the final weeks of the vetting process, reports surfaced that some Biden campaign staffers and members of the vetting committee were concerned about Harris’ past attacks against Biden during the presidential debates. A top contender in the early stages of the presidential primary, Harris caught Biden off guard during the first presidential debate last June when she challenged Biden on his civil rights record, attacking his past stance on busing as well as his friendly recollections of having worked with noted segregationists in Congress.

But when Harris dropped her own bid for the nomination in December, Biden told CBS News he didn’t hold the attacks against her. “I’m not good at keeping hard feelings,” he said at the time.

Harris has been a prodigious fundraiser for Biden since endorsing him in early March, holding several virtual events and fundraisers for the presumptive Democratic nominee, with each netting at least $1 million for the campaign.

Before she was elected senator, Harris spent two terms as California’s attorney general and was district attorney for San Francisco. During her failed presidential run some critics found fault with her record on criminal justice, accusing her of not being as progressive as she claims. A New York Times op-ed accused her of either staying silent or opposing reforms favored by progressives throughout her career. 

In the wake of the murder of George Floyd, however, Harris has pointed to her experience in law enforcement as evidence she knows how to fix the problems at hand.

“As a former prosecutor, a profession I chose because…growing up the way I did, (I) knew how law enforcement had a long history of enforcing laws indiscriminately, and often based on race, and racism, that’s why I chose to become a prosecutor,” Harris said at a news conference in June. In the last month, Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) has been busy. She has chaired hearings in the House Oversight Committee on U.S. fighter jet programs and cybersecurity, called for investigations into the Trump administration’s use of federal troops in American cities and treatment of Planned Parenthood clinics, and cast numerous votes on the House floor.But Maloney has been without a key piece of information as she goes about her business: whether she won her primary election on June 23. Thirty-three days after primary day, Maloney holds a 648-vote lead over challenger Suraj Patel, earning 41.56 percent of the vote to Patel’s 39.93 percent, according to the latest tally from the New York City Board of Elections. With the race so tight and ballots still left to be counted, definitively declaring a winner has proved impossible.The delay is due to the coronavirus pandemic, which devastated New York and prompted many voters to cast absentee ballots, creating an avalanche of mail that utterly overwhelmed a New York City Board of Elections widely seen as inept even in ordinary times. Now Maloney and Patel are in a protracted state of limbo, dedicating campaign resources to keeping a vigilant eye on the veracity of officials’ ballot-counting, contacting individual voters to gather information, and marshalling volunteers to do all that work. It’s a hard-fought process that requires more staff, money, time, and energy at the tail end of an already hard-fought campaign. And experts say it’s a situation that’s poised to repeat in contests around the country in November as COVID-19 radically alters the normal voting landscape.  As Patel put it to The Daily Beast, the experience has been like treating a first vote count as a recount. For his campaign, that’s entailed immediately shifting gears. “We were ill-equipped to be ready for this. We’re a grassroots campaign built on energy, excitement, volunteers,” Patel said. “I’d love to have our team focusing on the Census, anything else, but if I have to have people at the Board of Elections watching ballots being opened because our opponent also has it, that is just a waste of time.” Maloney’s team was no more prepared for the ordeal. “I don’t think any of us really knew that was going to happen,” a senior Maloney campaign staffer told The Daily Beast. The campaign is confident the race will be called in her favor given her current lead, and have been since June 23, the staffer said. “I’ve had every confidence that we had won, and the problem was, our election looked ridiculously close for no reason other than it was a third of the way through.”The current situation in New York’s 12th District might be an extreme example of the coronavirus pandemic’s capacity to seriously disrupt the way elections are conducted in America. But in the eyes of experts, it could be a preview of November—and should serve as a wake-up call for candidates around the country to prepare to grapple with the kind of limbo that Maloney and Patel are stuck in now.“I don’t think folks know what to do,” said Doug Heye, a veteran GOP strategist who said he’s noticed very little chatter about how down-ballot candidates might prepare themselves for a worst-case scenario like New York is experiencing. “The world has changed very quickly on this… For individual campaigns, you now have to be prepared for recounts—or counts, as they were—in a way you might not be.”Candidates have been focusing on getting the vote out, not necessarily “what’s next,” said Sean Morales-Doyle of the Brennan Center for Justice’s Voting Rights and Elections Project. “Candidates in recent elections in New York now realize the importance of the last part.”Well before the turn of events in New York, where several other congressional races were finally called weeks after June 23, it was accepted in political circles that thanks to COVID-19, Election Day 2020 wouldn’t be a traditional one. With most jurisdictions expanding the ability to vote by mail due to public health concerns over in-person voting—and many predicting historic levels of turnout in the race between President Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden—protracted counting processes are expected. The battles for the White House, House, and Senate may not be totally resolved for weeks, a far cry from the election-night race projections that have gone out when California closes its polls.For many, the prospect of such a delay isn’t concerning if it means that voters are able to exercise their rights safely and have their votes accurately counted. But public trust in the process isn’t a given: High-profile politicians have chipped away at its integrity in recent months. Chiefly, Trump has stoked fears, without any evidence, that Biden and the Democrats will “steal” the election through absentee voting, invoking loaded images of ballot-stuffing and other outright fraudulent practices. Democrats, and even some Republicans, see Trump’s effort as planting a seed for distrust in the final outcome, should it not go his way. “We have a crisis of confidence that is being fanned by the president, and we have a crisis of logistics that is being fanned by the pandemic,” said Matt Bennett, co-founder of the Democratic think tank Third Way and an alumnus of Bill Clinton’s presidential campaigns. “It’s going to cause enormous chaos and confusion.”To those who went through the election recount in the 2000 presidential election, 2020 has the possibility to make the battle between George W. Bush and Al Gore over contested votes in Florida look tame. “The recount sucked every molecule of oxygen out of the air, and that was one recount in one race in one state,” said Bennett. “The overlay of economic catastrophe, a public health disaster, and deep suspicion… it’s a very scary thing to contemplate.”Most expect the brunt of public attention to focus on the presidential race, should it remain undecided after Nov. 3. But voting delays are poised to affect the fight for the Senate, where an extended count in just one state could decide control of the chamber, or in the House, where Democrats are expected to retain a majority but delays in a handful of seats could leave control of the gavel unresolved.The prospect of a long period this fall when the entire country experiences something akin to what voters in New York’s 12th District are experiencing now has crossed the minds of longtime political hands. “It’s something to be worried about, whether people are prepared for that kind of inconclusive situation for weeks after an election, what people will make of that and whether or not they see it as the system playing out the way it’s supposed to,” said Morales-Doyle. “There’s always one outlier where we don’t know it for a couple of weeks, so we’re used to that,” said Heye. “What we’re not used to, and potentially not prepared for, is this could happen in 25 races. That could leave the balance of the House or the Senate in question.”Heye added that it’s going to be more important than ever that campaigns lawyer up well before Election Day—not on it or just after, as they typically do when it becomes clear a recount is imminent. “The biggest area of concern is places that don’t get national attention,” said Third Way’s Bennett. “We’re going to be focused on the six, seven states in the presidential race, a handful of Senate races. If you’re running in a congressional district that’s outside of those, it’s going to be tough to get the resources and attention to those questions.”Already, some party entities are laying the groundwork for these scenarios. Building on the experience of states like California, whose expansive absentee ballot program has in the past led to lengthy delays in calling close races, operatives in Washington are providing guidance for campaigns nationwide in how to conduct what’s called absentee ballot “chasing”—communicating with likely absentee voters frequently to ensure they’ve sent in their ballots well ahead of time. And the Democratic Party’s official House campaign arm has already begun advising candidates around the country to prepare now for their races not to be called on Election Day, according to an official there. Battle-hardened New Yorkers have some hope that their terrible experience is not an exact preview of what the rest of the country will experience. Both the Patel and Maloney camps noted that in Kentucky, which held its primary the same day as New York’s, officials were hit with a massive increase in absentee ballots and were able to deliver results relatively quickly. And New York politicos believe their own state and city Board of Elections are such a “clusterfuck,” as one operative put it, that nearly every other jurisdiction should be better off.Although the Maloney and Patel campaigns fought a bitter battle, they agree on two counts: that their experience should still serve as a warning to others—a “canary in the coal mine,” said Patel—and that they wouldn’t wish it on anyone.“I hope no one has to go through what our race is,” the Maloney campaign staffer said. “I do think, if you’re a state that doesn’t do mail ballots and is trying to do this, you may have to wait.”“I would say to other campaigns, be prepared to turn around and, unfortunately, the fight doesn’t end at Election Day,” said Patel. “Fortunately, I graciously accept the role of guinea pig who had an election that was completely up in the air here.”Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Joe Biden announced he has chosen California Senator Kamala Harris to be his running mate heading into November’s presidential election, adding his former rival for the Democratic nomination to the ticket. The Biden campaign made the announcement in a text message to supporters on Tuesday. “Joe Biden here. Big news: I’ve chosen Kamala Harris as my running mate. Together, with you, we’re going to beat Trump,” the message said, adding a link to Biden’s campaign website. The Biden campaign announced the two will make their first appearance together on Wednesday at an event in Wilmington, Delaware. Speaking at the White House on Tuesday, President Trump brought back one of his favorite insults from the 2016 campaign, calling Harris “nasty.”  “She was very very nasty, to — one of the reasons that surprised me, she was very — she was probably nastier than even Pocahontas to Joe Biden. She was very disrespectful to Joe Biden, and it’s hard to pick somebody that’s that disrespectful,” the president said.  He also recalled her treatment of his Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, in 2018, during his confirmation hearing. “She was extraordinarily nasty to Kavanaugh. Judge Kavanaugh then — now Justice Kavanaugh,” Mr. Trump said. He added, “I won’t forget that soon.” Harris had pressed Kavanaugh about sexual misconduct allegations leveled at him dating back to high school and college. During her failed presidential run some critics found fault with her record on criminal justice, accusing her of not being as progressive as she claims. A New York Times op-ed accused her of either staying silent or opposing reforms favored by progressives throughout her career.  In the wake of the murder of George Floyd, however, Harris has pointed to her experience in law enforcement as evidence she knows how to fix the problems at hand. “As a former prosecutor, a profession I chose because…growing up the way I did, (I) knew how law enforcement had a long history of enforcing laws indiscriminately, and often based on race, and racism, that’s why I chose to become a prosecutor,” Harris said at a news conference in June. She added, “It is time that the leaders in this United States Senate, in this United States Congress, take action to reform a criminal justice system that for far too long has been informed by systemic racism and by racial bias.” Some saw the collapse of her presidential bid as a flaw, too, during the vetting process. Harris’ campaign ran out of money about two months before primary voting began.
