January 2024 Empties & Throw Away
Tumblr media
* = disliked the product - would not repurchase ** = liked the product - would not repurchase *** = liked the product - might or might not repurchase **** = loved the product - would repurchase *HOLY GRAIL!*
1. Carenology95 Re:Blue Cleansing Gel Balm (1.5ml 0.05oz) source: sample thoughts: I actually kind of liked this. The texture of this is just like what it claims, a gel balm. I did enjoy this but I definitely would probably use this more so in the warmer months when I tend to double cleanse. rating: ***
2. Teaology Green Tea Detoxing and Reshaping Bath Salts (50g / 1.07oz) source: Hudson Bay Company thoughts: This was very nice but very messy as the green tea leaves are just loose and floating. I probably should have put the bath salts into like a tea bag so the tea leaves won't make as much of a mess. Aside from that the overall product was very nice and my body felt relaxed and refreshed. rating: **
3. Round Lab Mugwort Calming Cleanser (2ml) source: sample thoughts: This was a nice cream cleanser, but I wasn't a fan of the scent. I have found that I'm not a fan of mugwort scented items. Overall, this cleanser was nice and it felt like it did a good job of cleansing. rating: **
4. Purito From Green Deep Foaming Cleanser source: sample thoughts: I can't really remember how this cleanser was, but it was okay nothing really stood out to me that I could remember. It was also a cream type of cleanser. rating: **
5. The Face Shop Herb Day Cleansing Tissue (70 wipes) source: The Face Shop thoughts: These are still my favourite wipes and for the price as well. I haven't found cleansing wipes that are as good as these for a decent price. I usually stock up around the end of year or mid year when they have the big sales. I tend to go through 3-4 packs of these in a year but I will give an update on that next year as I'm thinking of doing a what I've finished for the year post. rating: *HOLY GRAIL*
6. Farmstay Aloe Vera Moisture Soothing Gel (300ml / 10.14oz) source: PinknBlossom thoughts: I've had this in my stash for a while now. This did expire in December 2023 but I decided to finish it anyways because there wasn't much left. For the colder months this was very nice as it provided a good amount of moisture for my body. In the warmer months, it did feel a little sticky but it was very soothing and cooling. It's good and is an inexpensive product. I think I got it for about $5 CAD or less. rating: ***
7. L'Occitane Lavande Moisturizing Hand Lotion (300ml / 10.1oz) source: L'Occitane thoughts: I did start using this as a hand lotion at first but then started to use it as a foot cream. This was not good as a foot cream nor hand cream. I noticed that my hands and feet started experiencing a lot of shedding or peeling. I know this because once I started noticing it more I decided to switch to another cream and it stopped. I don't know if it was because this cream is kind of old and has gone bad or it was generally like this for my skin. I did get this back in 2020, as for how long it's been opened I'm uncertain but I would say its been at least 2 years. rating: *
8. mixsoon Panax Ginseng Root Essence (100ml / 3.3oz) source: Stylevana thoughts: This was the second item I tried by mixsoon. This was okay, nothing really stood out to me. This is very liquid and I used it every morning. I finished this in 102 days, roughly 3 months. I do like this a little more than the bean essence but I didn't notice any difference to my skin. The brand for me is okay, its good if you're someone looking for a more vegan alternative to certain ingredients. This does smell like ginseng and says it's 100% ginseng essence which I don't know how true it is considering the expiration date. Unless there was a special process that makes it lasts longer. It's a little questionable. rating: **
9. skinfood All Day Berry Sun: More Safe SPF50+ PA++++ (50g / 1.76oz) Source: Jolse thoughts: This had a very liquid texture and it did give a white cast. I used this as a body sunscreen. I did find it a bit sticky but it did give a good amount of coverage. Usually skinfood items have a very nice scent to it, however this just smelt like a typical sunscreen to me. I thought it would have some sort of berry scent but it did not. Looks like they renamed and relaunched this line of sunscreen and have repackaged and possibly reformulated these as well. I did purchase this back in 2021. rating: *
Throw-Away
Most of these products are expired and old or something that I no longer use anymore.
Tumblr media
essence extreme SHINE top coat
Dashing Diva Core Serum I've used this but did not notice any difference to my nail or cuticles.
Saje safe hands antimicrobial hand lotion
Ouai Dry Shampoo Foam
Labiotte Wine Perfume Bar: Fine Fever
Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Eye Crayon: In The Buff
Shiseido Eyelash Serum
Fruits & Passion The vert eau de toilette
moonshot Micro Settingfit Cushion SPF50+ PA+++ Refill: 201 I'm sad that this expired as this is one of my favourite foundation/cushion that I use.
Skinfood Black Sugar Mask Wash Off x2
A'pieu Mulberry Blemish Clearing Ampoule & Cream x2
Etude House Drawing Show Dot Liner: BK801
moonshot Powder Fixer Special Edition 202 SPF27, PA++ I bought this on a whim because it was limited edition with Lisa from Black Pink's signature on it. I've opened it but have never used it as I typically don't wear makeup. I'm just ready to let go of this as it does not serve any purpose and it's just taking up space.
tarte Amazonian Clay 12-hour Blush: paaarty
Aritaum Sugarball Cushion Cheek Color: No.3 & No.5 These were my favourite blushes and they still are. However these are very old and have also passed their expiration dates. I believe I got them back in 2017 & 2018 and they have been expired since 2021. I just couldn't let these go as these were so good and I absolutely love them. But seeing as I can't really use them I have decided to let them go so I can make room for new things.
Troiareuke ACSEN A+ Healing Cushion SPF 50+ PA++++ This is another favourite cushion of mine. However, it has expired and also it is expensive but the finish I get from this is really nice. It makes my face look flawless and glassy. I feel like the color 21 may be a bit light for me and that's why I haven't been using it. I did purchase this limited edition one which I am now ready to let go as it's very scratched up and I believe it came like that as well.

Facial Skincare Products I’ve Used Pt. 2: The Crunchy Years
Part 1/ Part 3
Freshman and Sophmore Years 2018-2020
I was getting better at navigating skincare but this is also where I fell into the "non-toxic movement". This is ironic because I was scarfing down Lay's BBQ Chips and drinking Pepsi while looking for paraben-free skincare products. Honestly, the whole clean beauty trend is just greenwashing nonsense. Also, "clean" products were horribly overpriced. Around this time I was afraid of actives like AHAs, adapalene, etc. because I thought they’d cause chemical burns/sun sensitivity. I knew that this could be prevented with sunscreen, but I had doubts there was any good, clean mineral sunscreen once I had run out of Australian Gold and CVS no longer carried that brand. Funny enough I did use tea tree oil to help treat my acne, not knowing that tea tree oil is an irritant. Eventually, this phase died off after seeing posts and videos arguing against this greenwashing nonsense. I then began to focus more on reputable brands like CeraVe and Vanicream.
Cleansers
Acure Radically Rejuvenating Cleansing Cream - It smelt nice and did an alright job at cleansing. I don’t know how well this would do against sunscreen or makeup.
Burt’s Bees Soap Bark & Chamomile Cleansing Cream - It had a strong lemony smell. There’s coconut oil in this and I remember feeling very wary about the possibility of it breaking me out.
The Seaweed Bath Co. Purifying Gel Cleanser - Pretty sure this product is now discontinued. It came out as a jello-gel and whenever I’d use this, I would have to scrape it off my face while washing it off. This also came with two samples in the box, which is epic.
The Seaweed Bath Co. Purifying Micro-Scrub - This was a sample. It do be scrubbing. Not harsh at all.
Garnier Micellar Water (Rose, Vitamin C, Blue Cap, and Pink Cap) - Good at removing sunscreen/makeup and has been my go to for double cleansing. However, it’s bad at removing waterproof mascara. This cleansing water helped save me when I couldn’t remove mineral sunscreen with my regular cleanser.
The Face Shop Rice Water Brightening Cleansing Foam - Can’t say this brightened my skin. As you can see, I followed my mother’s foot steps and bought a scrub cleanser (/lh). Also, I got this in my eye one time and it hurt like a bitch.
The Face Shop Herb Day 365 Cleansing Wipes - They're eh. They did the job and smelt nice. I got this for free.
Lather Bamboo Silk Foaming Scrub - This was a sample. It smelt lemony if I remember correctly. It was aight but not worth going back for.
Pacifica Kale Detox Deep Cleaning Face Wash - It smelt good but I can’t say this is “deep cleaning”. I don’t think this would even stand a chance against mascara. It’s more for days when you don’t wear anything on your face. Very refreshing feeling afterwards though.
Pacifica Rose Kumbucha Flower Powered Face Wash - Same opinion as the kale cleanser.
Physicians Formula The Perfect Matcha 3-in-1 Melting Cleansing Balm - My first ever cleansing balm. It did a good job removing tinted sunscreen from my face.
Banila Skin & Co. Clean It Zero Cleansing Balm Revitalizing - Clean it zero it did. It had a scent that kinda reminded me of sweat. It sounds bad, but it really wasn’t. It was a mild scent. The box came with a QR code to show that it’s authentic, which is nice of the company to add. It’s easy for a customer to accidentally buy a fake product.
Boscia Black Charcoal Cleansing Cloths - Very irritating when used on lips. This sucked.
Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes - This was my mom's go-to before I converted her to the wonderful world of micellar water. Yeah, it worked like The Face Shop ones did. I just used them when I was removing my mom's makeup off of my face.
Treatments
Garnier SkinActive Clearly Brighter Dark Spot Corrector - I didn’t use this long enough to see any effects. I kinda got bored of it lol. I wasn’t even sure I got the right product.
Garnier Rose Water Facial Mist - It smelt nice but did nothing for my skin. I got this because I saw a mini one while in the waiting in line for the cashier at CVS.
Formula 10.0.6 Be Berry Clear Illuminating Peel Mask - I’m gonna be honest, I only got this and the other mask because of the packaging. The mask did nothing. The peeling part was kinda cool though.
Formula 10.0.6 Deep Down Detox Ultra Cleansing Mud Mask - Read above (minus the peeling part)
Frudia Green Grape Pore Control Sheet Mask - Didn’t really show any noticeable effects other than making my skin hydrated. That’s pretty much my general opinion over sheet masks.
Simple Kind to Skin De-Stress Sheet Mask - This may be one of the first sheet masks I’ve ever bought. I remember learning how slimey sheet masks and can be and how much product is inside the packaging.
Simple Kind to Skin Pollution Protect Mask - My friend help paid for this and in return, I tried to get him and our other friend to wear it lol.
Miniso Hot Spring Sheet Mask - So I am boo boo the fool. You see, I bought like five sheet masks from Miniso because they were cheap. I used like two or three before throwing out the rest because I noticed the cancer warning on the packaging. It turned out to be a waste of money because the warning doesn’t mean shit. Also, I used more than one type but I can’t remember all of them. One of them was hydrating.
Lather Advanced Blemish Control Serum - It didn't really help my acne. It may have dried some pimples out so I guess it did something.
Lather Sea Kelp & Ginseng All Over Mask - It's a nice green-colored gel mask. It's best for things like relaxing I suppose. It wasn't a very good hair mask.
Physicians Formula Skin Booster Vitamin Shot - Hydrating - The packaging looked pretty fancy and the serum did somewhat hydrate my face through the cold, December nights. I kinda felt that I could do better.
Pacifica Pineapple Bubbles Clarifying Bubble Mask - It smelt a bit of pineapple. It comes out as a liquid but once you rub it onto your face it turns into foam. To be honest I didn’t see any results. After bubbling the mask would kinda harden on your skin but it wasn’t very difficult to wipe off.
Pacifica Glow Baby Super Lit Booster Serum - I didn't use this enough to see results (I was afraid of chemical burns at the time). It felt tacky and it had a fruity smell.
Peach Slices Acne Spot Dots - Cute name, didn’t help pimples much tbh. The pimple has to have a white head before you use these, but when I paced it over a white head it’d still be there after removal.
Versed Found the Light Vitamin C Powder - It didn't do anything at all.
Versed Just Breathe Clarifying Serum - This did help my acne and helped prevent it. It wasn't irritating either, which is nice. I spilled like half of it and it still lasted me another solid four months.
Moisturizers
Peach Slices Citrus Honey Aqua Glow Moisturizer - First moisturizer that was mine. It was nice and pleasant on my skin, decently moisturizing. I’d credit this gel cream for saving my skin after me drying it out. I remembered that I got this while taking an early morning walk around 7:45ish am. When I returned home, I was annoyed that the bottle was pretty small (3 fl oz). But now I realize that for a bottle at that size for $12, it was a nice deal. There are much expensive moisturizers out there for like, 1.5 oz. -_-
Alba Botanica Hawaiian Oil Free Moisturizer - Holy shit this smelled so good. I was hooked on the scent and low-key wanted to eat it. It’s a gel cream that’s lightweight but pretty hydrating. Pretty good at it's job.
Nourish Organic Lightweight Moisturizing Face Lotion - This was mid. Actually no, below mid. The consistency was thin and it felt like it just sat on top of my face. It didn’t smell too pleasant either. Not that great of a moisturizer. Also, if you aren’t careful and don’t watch your face as you rub it in, you’ll have streaks all over your face.
The Seaweed Bath Co. Marine Night Therapy Cream - This was a sample. It was a pretty rich night cream. It would've been great if you have dry skin, but this product is pretty much discontinued.
Lather Australian Plum Night Creme - This was a sample. It was pretty rich if I remember correctly.
Burt's Bees Intense Hydration Hydration Day Lotion - It wasn't actually that hydrating. Also hard to spread at times. The pumped sucked ass.
Pacifica Dreamy Youth Day & Night Face Cream - It was a lightweight but hydrating cream with a light floral scent. Considering that I was like, 15 using this, I did not notice any anti-aging effects.
Versed Dew Point Moisturizing Gel Cream - I wanted to like this but it wasn’t enough for my skin. This is good if you have oily skin. Also, I got this as an upgrade after I finished Nourish Organic and it did tremendously better.
Versed Skin Soak Rich Moisture Cream - This is what I needed after spending three days without a moisturizer. I prefer this one over Dew Point. This moisturizer really lives up to its name. It was like it was 90% water when it touched my face cause it got my skin so hydrated. Lightweight but deeply moisturizing. Sucks that it doesn’t come in larger amounts.
Elf Skin Holy Hydration! Face Cream - It was a nice moisturizer but I heard that apparently, it had microplastics in it so idk ¯\_(ツ)_/. Made me feel paranoid because I learned it had fragrance and the thing about microplastics also didn't help.
Cocokind Chia Seed Oil - Not too greasy but the oiliness easily spreads after application. I got this because I was having a major dilemma over what moisturizers to get (this was during my, ‘non-toxic skincare’ phase), so I chose an oil. Because it’s an oil, it had no humectants and my skin still felt dry underneath the oil.
Smartly Unscented Facial Lotion - It was pretty watery and wasn’t that great with moisturizing. Somehow it felt a bit greasy.
Sunscreen
Australian Gold Botanical SPF 50 Tinted Face Sunscreen Lotion - The first facial sunscreen I bought because I thought the packaging was pretty. This was during my crunchy contradictory phase. The undertone was a bit pink and made my complexion look off. It smelt nice and had a matte finish without being dry. I remembered the day I tried to take it off. It took about three cleansers because two of them weren’t “heavy duty” enough. Thank you Garnier micellar water - I was fighting for my life that night.

March Magic
Forgive the lateness of this post, but March was a busy month so LET’S TALK ABOUT IT.
So after leaving Ipsy last year (for various reasons), I’ve missed receiving a little package every month full of makeup samples. I was all set to try Birchbox, but they wouldn’t accept a Canadian billing address so that didn’t work out. Instead I opted to give PLAY! By Sephora a chance. I was a member for three months before cancelling last week. My reason for ending it was mainly because I barely got any lipsticks or highlighters or anything FUN. I don’t know if it’s because they know that I’m in my mid-thirties or because they just have an influx of specific products, but a bitch doesn’t need twenty sample size cleansers. Not this bitch, anyway. Also, sending out a foundation sample (no matter the luxuriousness of the brand) makes ZERO sense because finding the right shade makes all the difference in the world for foundations. Also, I barely wear foundation. So I ended it. Also, am I the only one who hates getting tiny perfume samples? I feel like I have so many that I feel bad about throwing out, so I just keep them in the washroom and then use them instead of air-freshener if someone (or myself) stinks up the room (#lizadvice).
I was briefly intrigued by Frank & Oak’s clothing subscription box but decided after an hour of research that it’s probably too expensive for what you’re getting, even if the clothes are gorgeous.
Of course it was upsetting to hear that Luke Perry passed away. He was definitely one of the first men that I loved on television (god, I remember every single detail of that 90210 when his wife Rebecca Gayheart was killed). Such a good actor. So wildly attractive. And man, he was one of the best parts of Riverdale. I hate thinking about that show without him.
I absolutely love spring peas, so I made this Lemon-Basil Orzotto and it was really good.
I tried this charcoal that’s supposed to clean your makeup sponge and it was kind of annoying to use. It just takes too long to get a good lathering, and my foaming hand soap does the job much better and quicker.
I’ve only used it once so far, but I think I’m really into this Bliss Jelly Glow Peel Exfoliator that I got at Target for $10. No irritation at all and my face felt crazy smooth afterward.
I have a mini version of Sunday Riley’s Lactic Acid and it’s kind of really good, too. Only a million dollars more expensive than other good facial products! Sweet! Also, you’d think having “acid” in the name would frighten people away but I guess not. Obviously never going to buy the full size because it’s not magical or anything, but happy to have tried it.
Ate at this Mexican place Pulqueria in Chinatown that was pretty good. The location is pretty cool (very NYC out of a movie) and the inside is gorgeous. The food? Pretty decent! All in all, nothing to write home about but definitely worth remembering if you’re in the neighborhood.
Got some ice cream at Taiyaki and it was the definition of plain-as-a-dick. Nothing special here.
Finally ate at Lilia in Brooklyn! Honestly, it was really great and I can’t wait to go back. I made Nathan get the spicy lamb fettuccine so that I could try it and I got the mafaldini with pink peppercorns. His was fantastic, but mine was only so-so (it was way too al dente) - I think I just ordered badly because everything else we had was incredible. They had this herbed focaccia with ramp butter special that blew our faces off. I’ve never heard of a bread special before and it’s a brilliant idea, more restaurants should do this, people go nuts for fancy bread (myself included). The cauliflower appetizer (with spicy soppressata, sicilian pesto & majoram) was amazing and the dessert soft-serve swirl was wild. I already know what I’m ordering next time: the sheeps milk cheese filled agnolotti with saffron, dried tomato & honey. The service was of course great, and the space itself is gorgeous. No idea it used to be an auto-repair shop. Is the pasta better at L’Artusi? I’ll have to order the agnolotti before I answer that question. One must be well informed before making such declarations.

On my birthday, I took advantage of a free-facial offered from Smith & Brit in the city and it was beyond lovely. Claire (the owner) is such a fantastic woman who really knows what she’s doing and she made it such a wonderful experience.
I also took advantage of the free birthday brow arch they offer at all Benefit locations and whoa. I almost exclusively thread my eyebrows every few months, so I was excited to have them waxed for a change. I have pretty sensitive forehead skin, so I did have tiny bumps around my eyebrows for a few days afterward, but it still was worth it. They do an “eyebrow map” of how your eyebrows would best look and then wax them accordingly. And then they follow that with filling them in with Benefit products. I usually use a combination of Colourpop’s brow pencil and Milani’s waxier eyebrow pencil, but when she used the Benefit eyebrow gel wand, I was floored at how much fuller they looked. Really considering buying the mini and seeing if I can achieve that same look. Look how full!

I tried both 2019 birthday gifts from Sephora and Ulta, and talked about both of them here.
I watched all of Shrill in one evening and I can’t imagine not watching it that way. It’s perfect. I can’t stop playing this song on repeat, WHY IS IT ONLY ONE MINUTE? Other thoughts: I had no idea that the morning-after pill doesn’t work for women over 175 pounds, that’s insane!? The mother/daughter storyline is so well done it hurts. ALL of the outfits on pretty much every single woman are so fucking lovely. I rewatched that one part with the woman in red walking and buying flowers over and over it just made me so happy, I can’t describe why. And the pool party episode? I may have sobbed through some of it, and not in a sad way but in a cathartic way. It just made me feel so many things at once. Mostly about how sometimes you feel invisible if you’re self conscious or self-loathing about your body, and you feel like you don’t matter unless you fit into this idea of what you think people expect you to look like and how if you don’t fit into that, then you’re essentially a worthless piece of garbage, so you treat yourself that way on a daily basis. And how this type of thinking can last you a lifetime because it’s all you’ve allowed yourself to believe for years and years. There are so many ways that a person can feel inadequate or less than, and it’s so internally normalized because you truly believe that you’re not good enough and you never will be. It’s a depressing way to live and so many women especially live this way, myself included obviously. So that whole episode really just felt like a fucking dream of a reality. I really hope there will be more episodes of the series, I’ve never related to a television show more in my life.
I tried the watermelon makeup wipes from Sephora and even though they smell amazing, they don’t take off all of your makeup. Pass. The Avon one is still my all-time favourite.
I tried the cleansing pads from First Aid Beauty and they’re tingly, fun and great. Perfect alternative for when you don’t feel like washing your face. I don’t know if that’s their intent, but that’s how I’m using them.
Nathan’s second album came out on iTunes! Buy it! Love it! Or not! Do you!
I’ve been having trouble sleeping and one thing that has helped? Taking a hot shower before bed. Is this such common knowledge that I’m a moron? Maybe. In any case, very happy to have learned this.
Started and finished watching the final season of Broad City and it was really, really good. I always forget how good this show is. I wish it existed when I was a teenager.
Practically in LUST with Trader Joe’s Everything But The Bagel Seasoning. I’m so late to this party, but at least I finally got there. I’ve only even tried it on top of some buttered bread and I was floored at how good it is.
Can’t stop rewatching all the old Ready or Not episodes on YouTube. Also, Degrassi Junior High.
You know how sometimes you have irrationally dumb opinions on things you know nothing about? That was me with dry shampoo. I didn’t really understand it. Also, I thought it was exclusively for white women, I don’t know why? Obviously I tried some (this Amika one) and I mean… it’s kind of spectacular. I maybe shouldn’t have discovered it because I might never wash my hair again.
I visited the Everlane store in Soho (because apparently YouTube ads really do work on me) and even though it’s beautifully minimalist, it’s way too overpriced.
Tried the pizza at Lions & Tigers & Squares Detroit Pizza and it was really good. They don’t offer single slices, but it’s the perfect place to go with someone to split one. So in love with Detroit style lately. (Also, can I accept world-wide-credit for the massive amounts of pepperoni pieces you’re seeing on pizzas these days?! I’ve been ordering triple-pepperoni-well-done pizzas for DECADES and I’ve been harshly judged endlessly because of it and LOOK AT WHERE WE ARE NOW! Full credit.)

The penultimate episode of this season of This Is Us was wildly good. There was so much relatable couple stuff, it’s so hard to even get into if you didn’t see the episode/don’t care about the show, but if you did? Email me. I could talk about it for an hour, it was so well done. It’s essentially about the give and take in a relationship and about how it’s rarely equal, and man… so, so well done. Loved every minute.
Remember how I tried and liked Bumble & Bumble’s Thickening Spray? Well, I still do but definitely don’t spray it on your roots, it works much better if you use it sparsely on the rest of your hair when damp. Maybe that’s already obvious but I’m very new to using any hair products, so forgive my stupidity.
SO excited for Jenny Slate’s new book.
I went to Beacon’s Closet for the first time and whoa. I didn’t find anything I loved, but it’s definitely one of those places you should stop in every once in awhile to see what’s there. The space is a little overwhelming, but the things that I’ve seen people get from there are gorgeous and so inexpensive.
I tried to find my colour in the Fenty collection of concealers and nothing matched, but it’s not a huge deal since I’m happy with the NARS one I’ve been using. And speaking of concealers, Colourpop just released their own and they were kind of good?? Again, I still prefer the NARS one, but the Colourpop one is actually kind of good, especially for being $6.
Finally ate at Raclette and I don’t think I’ll be returning. There are basic rules for making a good grilled cheese. I mean, I’m no scientist but you should be able to hold up the sandwich. And that just didn’t happen here. I had to use a knife and fork, which is… sad. Astoria Bier & Cheese understands these rules and still remains the best place to go if you’re in the mood for one.
I accidentally tried smoked salmon for the first time and it was really good, who the hell knew? Apparently everyone but me. I’ve never ordered it because I really only fake-like cooked salmon, so why the hell would I like it uncooked or *shudder* smoked? Also, it looks so gross! I should’ve known better though because it’s almost always true that if something looks gross, it probably tastes amazing. That’s a thing, yeah?
I tried samples (because I own a million fucking samples of every cream on planet earth) of Kiehl’s avocado eye cream and passssssss. It left my under eyes crazy red and zombie-like, so never again.
Bought a new white living room carpet from Carpet Factory Outlet on the Upper East Side and it was so cheap and great, have to keep this place in mind.
Absolutely hate this Tarte mascara, it stays on your lashes for days after you think you’ve washed it off and I don’t know why anyone would want that.
Since I’ll forever love Trader Joe’s, we tried the new broccoli and kale pizza crust and it’s even better than the cauliflower crust that we love. This one also doesn’t burn as easily in the oven as the cauliflower one, so I think this is the new favourite.
There’s a new flavour of banana pudding at Magnolia Bakery: chocolate hazelnut. It was sold out when I tried to get it, but I did get a sample and yikes. Obviously it’s the greatest.
Ate at Al Di La in Brooklyn and it was not fantastic. Their version of “gnocchi” was confusing and 1000% too spinachy. The tagliatelle al ragu (below) was obviously good, but, like, it’s so hard to fuck that up.

Found this lovely-as-hell store in Park Slope, Habit. Literally everything felt and looked beautiful. In love with this one specific brand they had.
Went to a Mortified show with Harmeet who was visiting me, and it was good! We only stayed for the first half because honestly my feet hurt and we were standing and I think we both just decided, “Yeah, we get it… we’re good” and then went to Ample Hills Creamery around the corner. Love it when friends decide to leave an event early together for something more fun, not enough people do this.
FINALLY made it to Daily Provisions. Maple cruller? Heavenly. Everything-bagel-flavoured croissant injected with cream cheese? Delightful. Danny Meyer continues to do no wrong. Favourite breakfast place in Union Square.

Still very much in love with this song, and as I was listening to it one day I started reading the comments as I was listening and this one YouTube comment… my god. So sweet. Maybe parts of it are definitely corny or too much or something, but my god, in the moment, I loved it:
“I heard this song when I woke up un-groggy for the first time after an abortion. It was the first time I heard it. And riding in the car beside my Mom, who had been pro-choice her entire life until the moment she was staring that decision right in the face, both of us were silent the entire song. Through every lyric, it was as if Sara had written a eulogy of my life. Everything we had been through, everything I had suffered. Everything I had seen. Every time I had to grow up sooner than I should have. Everything I had to push to the back of my mind so I didn’t lose myself completely. Everything surfaced through these lyrics. This will just be another comment lost among this thread. But if someone happens to read it - if someone who NEEDS to see this comment see’s it - know that things will always be better. TIME HEALS ALL. Even if it seems as though no one would care if you were gone. Even if it seems as though you have no purpose in this world. YOU MATTER. It doesn’t matter how many mistakes you have made. It doesn’t matter how many times you have sworn to God “you’d change” if he just forgave you for this one mistake. Hell. Even if you don’t believe in God. If you don’t know what to believe, if you’re lost, if you don’t know what to do - just keep going. Keep doing. Keep moving in any direction that is away from the heartache and pain that keeps you tied down. Let go of the past. Let go of the fear and hurt your heart endures on a daily basis. Just keep living. Keep going. Forgive. Never forget. Learn from your mistakes. Better yourself. Live for you. Find your happiness. Love unconditionally. Live.” — Shelby Grimm
Went to Momofuku Noodle Bar for the second time and it was so much better than the first time. I also ordered better. The chilled spicy noodles with sichuan sausage, thai basil & cashews (shown below) were incredible and I tried some of the broth of the spicy beef ramen that Harmeet ordered and holy shit, it was good. I’m still too… not into the idea of ramen, but that broth was fucking nuts. ALSO, their dessert special (caramelized white chocolate pie with hazelnut and puffed rice was F-U-C-K-I-N-G memorable (also below). Christ.

A few months ago I got dinner at Pil Pil on the Upper East Side and since it was good, I stopped in there for lunch recently and it’s probably the best lunch I’ve had in that area for sure. There’s a $4 happy hour sangria special and their lamb sliders are incredible. The fries are maybe my favourite restaurant fries in the city, they’re so crispy and drizzled with this spicy aioli and they also have a chocolate-hazelnut dessert cake that is unbelievable. I know it sounds like I love everything everywhere, but I swear I don’t.
There is a place in NYC where you can rent out really nice digital cameras for 24 hours FOR FREE and no one knows about it (the only hiccup is that you need to have state-issued ID). Sony Square is a “public space committed to showcasing innovations in products, music, movies and gaming” - which essentially means that every few weeks they change up their aesthetic to showcase new Sony products, but the camera-rental service is an always-available option. Insanely cool thing to offer.
Found amazingly soft and comfortable leggings (cheap too!) at Aerie (thank you Marla!) that I will exclusively buy from now on. (No more trash Aritzia leggings that disintegrate every three months!) Bought some of their workout pants too that have pockets (!) that were incredibly soft, too.
I saw the movie Us and really liked it. Mostly because yeah, it’s a good movie. But also because IT’S AN ORIGINAL MOVIE. I’m so sick of remakes and superhero movies that I love it when movies like this get made. I know it’s classified as a horror movie, but it’s not really, in my opinion. Plus I love when you finish watching a movie and you want to come home immediately and research as much about it as possible. It’s good, go see it!
Harmeet and I went to Manhatta for lunch (because apparently I have a Danny Meyer obsession) and it exceeded all expectations. First of all, it’s not crazy expensive despite the fact that it’s in the fucking sky (60th floor). We got the mushroom soup, the scotch snails with pork sausage in garlic butter and the French onion burger and everything was amazing. Service was perfect. Views are insane. Perfect place to take someone who’s visiting, especially for lunch. Will definitely go back.

Lastly, I watched the Leaving Neverland documentary on HBO. I also watched all the episodes of Surviving R. Kelly. I watched both of these within a few days and I don’t recommend anyone viewing all of these things in such a short amount of time unless you want to cry endlessly and (irrationally? Or understandably?) loathe an entire gender for a few days. And look, if you know anything about me, you know what a huge fan I am of Michael Jackson. From his music to the connection of meeting Nathan, I’ve forever loved this man in the way that all of his fans love him. For years I would think (and sometimes, ugh, say) “I don’t know that man personally. I don’t want to know about his personal life. I can’t judge him if I don’t know him.” And I’d say these things as a way of deflecting from the fact that I didn’t want those beautiful songs tarnished in my mind, as dumb as that sounds. And in an extremely similar way, I acted the same with R. Kelly. I didn’t WANT to take “When A Woman Loves” off of my iPod for years because I didn’t want to believe someone who could sing so beautifully could be some kind of monster, which makes zero sense but seems like a rational thought to people who still don’t believe these victims. The way that we worship these artists/abusers, without actually knowing anything about them (or sometimes knowing complete details of their abuse), wanting them to continue to achieve success no matter what the cost, is so unhealthy and odd and is part of a larger culture that is already designed to idolize anyone with status or more money than us. I didn’t want to watch Neverland. I knew it’d be bad. I only took down my Woody Allen poster in my childhood bedroom last year (to be fair, I don’t live there, but this should’ve happened years ago). I rarely spoke up in favor of these men, but I did stay silent when they were discussed because that was easier to do and basically what most everyone else was doing and made it feel acceptable, which is awful. I feel horrible that it took this many years for victims to be believed and it makes me sick that I’m apart of the group of people who made it impossible for victims to be heard. As hard as these things were to watch, I think they’re wildly important to see.
This one part from Surviving R. Kelly sums up one of the problems so well.
“Our society tends to compartmentalize the things we don’t want to look at, and magnifies and glorifies the things that we do. For example, if an individual is providing something to the society as music, cinema, politics - we’re more likely to compartmentalize the negative behavior and minimize it, as a way of accepting what they’re contributing.”
Jesus, a lot happened in March. Excited for April! Some upcoming things that you can expect in next month’s post: I’m going to start taking collagen (I’ve heard it helps hair growth), a family trip to Niagara Falls, a Best of Astoria post & thoughts on the new Twilight Zone. Hello, April!

Daily Skincare Routine
So, to start, I’ll give you some insights and backstory.
My skin type is mostly oily, but depending on the time of the year it can become combination. I noticed last year I tend to get tiny blackheads around my hairline around April-July, and I say 'tend to' because it happened again this year. They went away around Aug-Sep but after some research and digging on the reason behind the outbreak that would occur during this time after they resurfaced, I found confirmation to what I already knew was the cause. Around the more humid and hot months, my already high oil production goes into overdrive apparently, so recently I went on the hunt for more products to help tackle my oily skin. I hit up SokoGlam of course and went shopping under their Skin Type: Oily. *If you're unsure of what category you fall under and what products might work best for you head over to their Skin Quiz and find out; it's quick and easy, you'll also get a selection of their top articles relating to your skin from their sister site TheKlog along with suggested products. All very good and helpful stuff here.
On to the true purpose of this post!
Daytime routine
My day starts off in the bathroom of course and getting ready for my workout, I don’t wash my face before a workout, but I do wipe a soaked cotton pad of Son&Park Beauty Water and apply sunscreen since I exercise outdoors. I am currently using L’eau Claire Callus RX G7 BB, which is made to aid with blemishes, irritation and inflamed skin. After a good sweat, I shower and give my face a good cleanse.
To start I go in with SkinFoods Egg White Perfect Pore Cleansing Foam, which is excellent for oily skin. I’ve really found this product to work well on my skin and holding up to all the rave reviews I’d seen. I follow up with NEOGEN Real Flower Cleansing Water—Calendula on a cotton pad, then giving my skin a good exfoliation with SkinFood Back Sugar Mask Wash Off, after washing that off, I add a few drops of Son&Park Beauty Water to my palms and pat that in, then a pump or two or COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence, finishing up with Easydew EX Repair Control Renewal Moisture and a tinted sunscreen *same as before* and sunscreen powder which is the Eminence Sun Defence in NO.3 Peaches & Cream which is also water resistant. after I’ve finished up with my face, I focus on moisturizing my body with 92% Aloe Vera by Nature Republic. There are all kinds of amazing moisturizers out there, this is just what I’m using at the moment.
I normally try to retouch my suncare as often as needed, cause it's important to do, but also a challenge with a busy schedule if you’re not used to doing so regularly. Just try to make it a good habit to retouch your suncare.
Nightly Routine
Winding down at the end of the day, I start with a double cleanse with Innisfree Balancing Cleansing Oil with Green Tea, after working that into my skin and removing my eye makeup and sunscreen, I simply rinse with lukewarm water, then moving on to the second cleanse which is normally on rotation between, PURITO Defence Barrier Ph Cleanser or the COSRX Salicylic Acid Daily Gentle Cleanser working that into a nice foaming lather, rinsing off and then apply RE:P Bio Fresh Mask With Real Calming Herb *I rave about this and it’s incredible ability to reduce inflamation and redness. Okay, so after leaving that on for about 10 minutes, I pat on a few drops of the NEOGEN Real Flower Cleansing Water—Calendula as a toner, then going in with Advance Snail 96 Essence, then moving on to the serums and booters; I use NEOGEN Pore Refine Serum and PCASkin C&E Strength Max at this step, then a good moisturizer, Easydew EX Repair Control Renewal Moisture or the Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Pink Juice Moisturizer. Lastly as a once a week sleep pack I use the Glow Recipe Watermelon Sleeping Pack.
I based this on the Korean 10 step and my morning routine is based on Soko+Ipsy collaboration (Link). You can learn more about the infamous 10 step and read up on all things skincare from a Cali native turned K-beauty enthusiast, an incredible entrepreneur, and business owner. she is head of both SokoGlam and TheKlog. *I gush cause she’s my utmost favorite and someone who truly insfires me! I digress, thanks for reading and taking interest in my morning and night skincare routine.
Thanks so much for reading!
Lots of love!

Up Next
I’ll be challenging myself to the IU diet for three days... But if I’m feeling up to it, I’ll push myself to finish off the rest of the week. I’ll try to post daily and give you updates on how it goes. I’ll be posting my starting measurements and some photos to reference what I look like at the start of this craziness.
