okay so listen some times you get really interested in one single thing and that’s all you think about for a long time so you develop some dumb thoughts and here are a list of mine about atla and tlok in no particular order
1. in tlok they made aang look so BORING like so COOKIE CUTTER. the only times i like how they made aang look is in the old friends poster and in the picture where he’s airbending the rolls like that’s IT like come on yall focus too much on making the hair differenet people got faces too ya know
2. TENZIN IS LIKE 16 YEARS OLDER THAN PEMA??? ISN’T THAT CRAZY??? LIKE PEMA WOULD HAVE ONLY BEEN ABOUT 20 WHEN AANG DIED. ALSO TENZIN HAD KIDS SO OLD
3. at the end of tlok bumi must be about the age (maybe a few years younger) when aang died that’s so weird bc bumi doesn’t look old i wonder how it happened with aang like maybe the last few months of his life he just physically aged like 30 years wouldn’t that be weird (and sad)
4. i mentioned this before but i’ve seen posts like “its sad to think about the fact that aang probably had to bury appa” and NO i refuse to believe that esp appa bc i thought an avatars spirit animal lives as long as the avatar? like roku’s dragon lived and died with him so that’s what happened with appa too. also momo, i’ve decided
5. kinda.............weird how learning the avatar state was like one of THE main problems in atla and aang had a hard time with it and it was considered this awesome power that we didn’t see that often and the in the legend of korra she just.......................gets it. like aang gives her her bending back and oh here’s the full power of the avatar state as well no need to learn about the chakras and meditate on life or whatever hey also have some energy bending as well why not
6. lin beifong is literally so hot
7. also in the legend of korra, bending isn’t as cool.. like in atla bending has all the beautiful forms and its like a dance or an art like that dance aang and katara did was based on their bending moves!!! and tlok isn’t like that and they try to spin it like “oh its modern now” but that’s just lazy and  boring
8. also (that one video explained this better than i could) while it’s kind cool to see the new technology mixed with the bending at first, the legend of korra is so much more american than atla, like i can see how a city with all those cultures mixed together might be a bit culturally ambiguous but like....... idk they talk about democracy in a weird way and they literally got the statue of liberty type thing going on (although i love every reference to aang i can get) and idk how to describe it. the bending is like this too where it used to be based off of hung ga kung fu or tai chi chuan now it’s just ..........boxing. i’ve seen some people say it’s because its easier to animate but like idk
8.5 oh also the whole good and bad evil spirit thing goin on (i forgot their names i think the good one was raava?) was really like god and satan smelling even though they tried to paint it as yin and yang idk it just didn’t come off like that
9. speaking of animation while i am desperate for new material can they NOT MAKE ANOTHER LIVE ACTION VERSION like........make a NEW STORY or maybe just DON’T with how korra turned out just like.....focus on the goddamn comics bc those are kinda fun and chill
10. bolin is pretty funny but him and mako and even asami are kinda boring im sorry but they are(asami is more interesting than mako though)
11. also fucked up how like the culture that was the most accepting and peaceful and spiritual and kind is the one that we never fuckin see this isn’t really a complaint about the plot just like it fuckin sucks!!! i would have loved to see some gay and funny air nomads
12. also maybe this is just bc im a big dumb fan but i refuse to believe aang was a bad father like maybe he didn’t divide his time in the best way but hey no one’s perfect and kya esp made it clear she wasn’t interested in air nomad culture so like what was he supposed to do ALSO SORRY BUT HE HAD TO LITERALLY BUILD A WORLD OUT OF 100 YEARS OF WAR AND REBUILD HIS CULTURE OUT OF NEXT TO NOTHING LIKE SORRY HE DIDN’T HAVE TIME TO TAKE YOU FISHING OR WHATEVER
13. i do love kya though bc lesb
14. THAT ONE LINE IN TLOK THAT WAS LIKE “ZUKO KNEW AANG BETTER THAN ANYBODY”??????? LIKE OF COURSE THEY WERE VERY COURSE BUT KATARA IS RIGHT THERE???? HELLO???
15. bc im a big dumb stupid idiot every character i get attached too i immediately insist that they can sing bc i’ve always wanted a really good singing voice so i’ve decided that aang is just like, a great singer
16. god i just love momo
17. UHHH I’M CURRENTLY READING THE WIKI AND IT SAYS THAT KYOSHI LIVED TO BE 230??? THAT’S COOL?????
18. i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again, air nomad avatars are just cooler bc of their fuckin tattoos. when those tattoos glow? fuckin tight. korras just got her eyes and like.......where’s the drama and conflama
19. while the spirit world can be interesting idk how i feel about the spirits in the legend of korra, like all cutesy and weird like that, like i don’t hate it, it’s just really different from atla spirit world and idk
20. i’ve always been curious about aangs tattoos like,,,, the ones on his arms go into his armpit, but like the one on his back? does that just go all the way to his ass or what? and where do the leg ones stop do they connect with the back ones or just go to the hip bones or idk
21. i wanted a detailed map and description and history of air temple island and i want it now
22. while i know that extensive and unnecessary backstory and weigh a good story down WHO ARE AANGS PARENTS, I’M JUST CURIOUS. LIKE WERE THEY EVER TOLD HE WAS THE AVATAR?
23. i will defend aang until the day i die bc he was so young and so good and even the stuff he did selfishly he has like ample reason to can u imagine being twelve and waking up and realizing that not only are you the only person left of your race and culture and history and that everyone you knew and loved, like even people you didn’t really know but the people who you would smile too sometimes, the all died pretty violent and horrible deaths while you were just stuck in some ice bc you got hit by some storm after running away can u imagine???? ALSO LIKE the world hadn’t had an avatar for a century so he had to just like make shit up as he went along of course he could talk to his past lives but like..........idk!!!! and how do you build up
24. I ALREADY SAID THIS BUT KORRA JUST..........GETS THE POWERS. LIKE WE SAW AANG NOT ONLY LEARN THE ELEMENTS BUT ALSO DEAL WITH LEARNING ABOUT THE AVATAR STATE IN DEPTH AND HOW BEING THE AVATAR WORKS AND IT WAS SPECIAL AND INTERESTING AND WE COULD HAVE SEEN KORRA WORK TO GET HER AIRBENDING POWERS AND HER SPIRITUAL SIDE AND HER AVATAR STATE BUT THEY WERE ALL JUST FUCKIN HANDED TO HER EVEN THE E N E R G Y BENDING LIKE COME ON................................................................GIRL WHOS WRITING THIS
25. real disrespectful how much sokka is neglected in tlok!!! smh
26. this is very important to me but my favorite episode (not really including the last ones bc those are just on a dif level) but my favorite episode is 3x2 The Headband which was the footloose ep if you don’t remember..........it’s just fun............he just wants to dance AND HE WAS FUCKIN MACKIN YOU SEE THAT SHIT?????????? “DON’T WORRY ABOUT THEM IT’S JUST YOU AND ME NOW” LIKE BITCH!!!! YOU’RE TWELVE YOU HAVE NO BUSINESS BEIN THAT SMOOTH also i LOOOOOOVE the fact that aang being a good dancer is literally canon....................
27. i literally never wanted to know how the avatar cycle started like don’t explain the magic like that just leave some mystery

Oh my, I wasn't expecting to get that story from Mako today. I know you've said it was difficult for you to write that, so thank you for finishing it. It was really great, especially because it was Korra and Mako. I always thought you'd use Wu (or more recently, Qi) but Korra fit quite nicely, and we got some development in their relationship after Wu tore into Korra. So I really enjoyed that, friendships and relationships can always improve even if it's been years. And! Baby talk! (Cont)
Like we know Sayuri comes eventually, but I've wondered if she is biologically Qi's, and you kinda answered that. Course I suppose we will see how it really happens sometime. But good to hear Mako's thoughts on it, and the wedding too. Glad he's okay with it lol. Anyways, this was great and I feel for Mako so much, that's some fucked up shit for an 8 year old. Poor kid. I kinda wish this was canon, just because I think it gives his character a lot of depth. Lovely work as always 💜
There was a Tumblr blogger, a couple of years back, who did a whole lot of very in depth meta about TLOK. They were an adult and clearly educated; their meta was, for the most part, very well thought-out and compelling, and they were fairly well known and, for the most part, highly regarded.
And yet they would say shit about Mako and Bolin that would make me pull back and think, What the fuck now? (As one example, they made some sort of dismissive comment about the fact that Bolin drew pictures instead of just writing letters to Korra and I thought...well, yes, but he was six when his parents were killed. Many children, around the world, don’t even start school until they are six or seven; countries that expect children to be reading by four or five are not in the majority. Me, I assume that Bolin is probably, for the most part, barely literate. On a good day. With easy text. He drew pictures because he can’t really write letters but he loves Korra and wanted to communicate.)
I will never forget the snide comment made about Mako when Su was trying to get the Red Lotus’s poison out of Korra. I’m seriously paraphrasing, but it was something with regards to Mako just not caring, that he was standing there not giving a shit, that at least Asami looked worried but Mako looked blank and uncaring. And again I thought...have you never seen PTSD in action? Do you even know what it is beyond the stereotypes?
Because that’s a pretty common thing in the TLOK fandom; the acknowledgement that yes, of course, Korra has PTSD but that apparently no one else does. What about Mako and Bolin? What, for that matter, about Asami? So much meta about Mako is framed in him needing to be A MANLY DUDE WHO NEEDS TO BE IN CONTROL when I see him as THAT POOR BASTARD SUFFERING FROM PTSD AND MOST LIKELY CRIPPLING ANXIETY WHO IS JUST TRYING TO KEEP IT TOGETHER AND CONTROL IS THE ONLY THING GETTING HIM TO THE END OF EACH DAY.
I know from PTSD. Not all of it is visual flashbacks and/or hallucinations. And if you ask me, Mako disassociates like a fucking master. Well. That’s how I write him, anyhow.
Sayuri will come in her own time. Don’t worry. She’ll tell her story. :D

(ABOUT HOUSING — Not Spoiler Free for Turf Wars
We know that in Republic City Hustle, with the boys at 13 and 15 years old, they move into the Pro-Bending Arena in an apartment above the gym, where we see them living in Book 1. For a brief stint they also lived at the Asato estate after the attack on the Arena then on Air Temple Island after the whole Hiroshi thing.
By Book 2, we do see their apartment by s2e05 and more glimpses of its main room — some sort of living room-kitchen combo — throughout the season [some pictures under the cut].
However, it just hit me when writing that ask about what Bolin’s thoughts on Tenzin were that we technically don’t ever see Mako & Bolin’s apartment again after Book 2.
At the start of Book 3 Bolin mentions that he takes up residence at Air Temple Island again after the apartment is infested with Spirit Vines as a result of Harmonic Convergence [while Mako decides to sleep under his desk at the police station].
Then of course by Book 4 he’s traveling around the Earth Kingdom/Empire with Kuvira as part of her army [as a sidenote, his rank is Corporal by the time we see him], to which I’m assuming he’s living on that fancy train for the most part.
In TLoK: An Avatar’s Chronicle, which happens within the realm of Turf Wars [as Bolin references that he’s Mako’s partner on the police force], he does mention that he has a bunch of Nuktuk merch left over so he had to keep his merchandise somewhere, possibly at Air Temple Island or even the Asato estate since his family moved in during Book 3 and is seen still living there in Book 4 when Mako sends Prince Wu there for safety.
At the end of Turf Wars, when Bolin is being Dramatique™ and is telling Mako his goodbyes due to choosing to “go their separate ways” after he quits the police force, Mako states he’s going to see him “at home in, like, two hours” meaning that they were able to get acquire another place together — which I think is really nice that they do so.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Looking at their first apartment [Book 2 era; they’re 17 and 19 at this point], it’s pretty small -- like it looks like probably a 1 br/1 ba place; it has two doors [not including the entrance], one which I assume is the bedroom [the door behind Mako] and inside is a bathroom.
Tumblr media
[Also fun fact, that bookshelf gets filled with more books as the season goes on. It’s very bare when we first see it in s2e05l, seen above. Mako’s a big nerd.]
The other door near the entrance [door to the right in the foreground] is probably like a little closet since window placements give a sense that their apartment unit is at the corner of the building, so a room to the right would not be possible.
Tumblr media
From another angle, from the kitchen toward the entrance. The little closet is more visible for size.
Tumblr media
— And Bo somehow managed to fit a giant tub in there somehow. [note this screenshot is from s2e06, the first two are from s2e09. I have no idea where he put the couch, which is seen in in earlier shots of the apartment; where the heck did they put all his Nuktuk purchases after this scene? Who knows lmfao.]
I’m hoping in their new apartment [where Bo and Mako are 20 and 22] as of post Book 4 they found a place where they have their own respective rooms after almost two decades of sharing “bedrooms” [obviously I say this lightly since who knows how they slept from ages 6 & 8 to 13 & 15].
Sidenote: Have a cute picture from An Avatar’s Chronicle of the Trio + Pabu in the apartment.)

BS Bending in TLOK
Watching The Legend of Korra is so disappointing in a lot of different ways. So if you ignore the plot, you’d expect at least some good action scenes with the effort and consistency from the old show. Ehhhh. The bending in LOK is strikingly idiotic and a degradation of the gem from the old show. Maybe if I weren’t comparing it to The Last Airbender, I wouldn’t mind it. But the fact it is so blatantly off from its predecessor makes for another highlight of Korra that I can’t un-see. From how elements are manipulated to even more complex shit with specific kinds of ~special people bending~, Korra, if I can put this politely, fucks everything up.
Right from the start you can tell that Korra definitely dumbed down the movements of the characters. It’s odd because the martial arts expert from Avatar worked on Korra as well. However, he only worked on 22 episodes of Korra, compare that with his 61 episodes guided in The Last Airbender. It’s probably a mix of Kisu’s lack of involvement, and an overall decision from the writers that maybe it wasn’t as important? Which is sad, because it really disassociates the audience from the complex spirituality and intricacies of the world. Styles benders seem to have spent years mastering are lost, and replaced with a modern, boxing type “PUNCH PUNCH PUNCH!!!” Hollywood action situation. Here’s some pretty (MS PAINT) pictures to do the talking for me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And a bonus:
Tumblr media
If the simplification of normal bending hasn’t gotten to you, there’s still a lot more I have to sift through. There’s so much shit pointing to how bending’s complexity was reduced for coooool moments. I’m even going to make nice little subheaders.
Lavabending
Tumblr media
So, in ATLA we see lavabending is a feat only the Avatars are capable of. Roku does it, Kyoshi does it. Avatar cool kids only. But then in Book Three, Bolin suddenly has the ability to lavabend at the tip of the hat. Which, by the way, is another thing stupidly prevalent throughout this series. Both Korra and Bolin in times of crisis suddenly have the ability to do things they couldn’t do, but really wished they could’ve. Hooow convenient.
So the discrepancy here is how Bolin can lavabend, and so can this random Earthbender guy, wouldn’t that mean all Earthbenders can? Metalbending makes sense, but lava is so hot it’s going to set stuff on fire. Technically, it counts as two elements, and has been confirmed as such by making it an Avatar-only thing in ATLA. But now these two random guys can just do this. Apparently it may even be easier than metalbending, which is also ridiculous. If lavabending is just bending the Earth to “go fast”, that’s a lot easier than metalbending because there’s more mass to bend. Just make it go zoom zoom and blamo everyone’s a lavabender.
Some people like to claim that because Bolin had an Earthbending dad and a Firebender mom, then that means he can control both elements to control lava. Which is dumb because then that would make him a fanfic-esque Dual Bender. And we really don’t need any of those. It’s never explained or justified, and is so different from the original show, it feels...sacrilegious. How dare you dishonor the lore. /s
BALD AIRBENDING MAN
Tumblr media
What’s his name?
I don’t really care, because he’s dumb too. I feel like I don’t have to elaborate, though. It should be pretty obvious. ~Harmonic Converge~ (weird af plot device) gave him airbending, and because he studied it before and read a book by an Airbender Lady, he’s a master at it now. His powers are so innate, he worked so little to get to where he is. Hell, he didn’t work at all.
Unless you want me to believe that all his days in prison, he anticipated becoming an airbender and practiced all the moves beforehand. Granted, there are no official moves anymore. I’m sure he’s experienced in reckless punching. That’s all you need to bend, right?
If he can read a book and be great at airbending, why can’t Korra. Why didn’t Aang read THREE books to go defeat Ozai. Aang just should’ve read Earthbending for Dummies. Then he could bend the entire world off its axis. And This Bald Guy can jump off a cliff after quoting some “deep airbending lore” and he can FLY. Not even propelled by anything or even (AGAIN I REITERATE) moving his arms to BEND the currents around him. He’s not flying. He’s floating. And floating characters have always seemed like pretty bad animation, seriously. He looks like a late-stage yuri on ice character. Super out of place, and moving oddly across an undefined plane.
Tumblr media
MAKO IN GENERAL
Mako does a couple things I’m not a big fan of. Ok, a lot of things. But in terms of bending, I have a few choice picks.
In Legend of Korra, lightning and its redirection has a lot less of an impact. Being electrocuted no longer hurts anyone unless the writers want us to feel bad for a character being hurt (usually Korra). But half of the time, it’s just there to look really COOL and not really do anything. This is proven by two things. Mako shoots lightning right on Amon at point blank, and Amon isn’t affected. The same is true for Mako. He HOLDS ON to the lightning and ISN’T AFFECTED AT ALL. Let me make another ATLA/LOK comparison.
Tumblr media
Zuko: Tries to redirect lightning, gaurding his torso so hopefully it doesn’t hit him. In the end it does and he’s pretty much out of the fight.
Tumblr media
Mako: Doesn’t even really care if he’s hit by the lightning at all. He holds on to it for a good few seconds, because it’s not like electrocution hurts or anything. Only after getting a REFRESHING SHOCK for a good bit does he decide to toss it back at the Robo Man.
Maybe this would make sense because Mako is supposed to be a cool, all-powerful Firebender. But then even that theory breaks down, because he can withstand the strongest forms of raw fuckin’ Bending Power from all elements, apparently.
He does another of these dumb moves when he’s being bloodbended by Amon. We see Amon being bloodbended, but he escapes the grip, and the audience assumes it’s because he’s a bloodbender. But then suddenly MAKO CAN DO IT TOO. What a great guy.
Tumblr media
Also Amon’s fine from this shock as well. And this kind of encompasses everything I’ve touched on. There’s Amon bending without moving, Mako having unrealistic powers never touched on before, and powers that are nerfed to all hell just to add ~drama~ in replace of actual sense.
TL;DR: LOK’s bending is saturated action filler written in for wish fulfillment, sacrifices old techniques and inner consistency for cool looking moves and scenarios, and shows a disappointing lack of passion or misunderstanding of the source material

quick question how canon is your wuko stuff?
Quick you say? Quick? Heh. I don’t really do quick.
Well, if we’re going to get technical…none of my work is strictly canonical because Wuko is not actually a canon thing. I mean, people can go on about subtext and how well the characters suit each other and such but the reality is that Bryke clearly accepts and indeed even includes openly same-sex couples in canon (see: TLOK comics) but have chosen not to make Wuko canon. I don’t know what to tell you, you’d have to take it up with them. (Yes, I’m salty.)
But I am assuming you mean canon outside of the whole Wuko is actually a headcanon thing, so moving on!
For starters, none of my fic is comic-compliant - which, by the way, I’ve tagged on AO3. That’s because I wrote the first one over 3 years ago and obviously there were no comics to be compliant with. Since I have not, for the most part, enjoyed the TLOK comics at all I will not be going back into my previously written fic to edit it into being comic-compliant. None of my fic takes the TLOK comics into consideration at all.
I also wrote some of my fic - most notably, Please Excuse My Penmanship - before Bryke’s commentary about Prince Wu was released on Book 4′s DVD. Specifically, the parts where they threw out vague references to him being in either boarding school or at Republic City University when the Red Lotus killed Queen Hou-Ting as well as the fact that he requested Mako to be his bodyguard after seeing his picture in the paper. In all of my fics the assumption is that Wu was raised as the Crown Prince and lived a very sheltered life in the Palace until the day that Hou-Ting was assassinated and he was spirited away to Republic City by the Dai Li; also in my fic Lin Beifong assigned Mako to Wu for reasons of her own. So if you are looking for fic that adheres to those two bits of commentary by Bryke then you’ll be disappointed in mine.
If you are looking for fic that takes place during the show and is canon-compliant (short of Wu being in RC at school before Book 3 and demanding Mako specifically as his bodyguard) then my collection The Prince and the Bodyguard will probably appeal.
If you are looking for fic that takes place immediately after the finish of Book 4 then Please Excuse My Penmanship will probably appeal. (The notes about the comics and the Book 4 commentary still apply, obviously.) There are some Beifongs involved, most notably Huan Beifong, whom I headcanon as autistic.
If you are looking for fic that takes place during Wu’s two years of putting together the abdication he discusses during the final episode of Book 4, then Dear Diary or: How I Had a Second Coronation and a Dalliance with a Detective might appeal. It does include some OCs and takes place in Ba Sing Se; there are also many other canon show characters involved. Is it canon? Well, as much as you can get when you are writing about something that happens 2 years after the show ends and that isn’t based on the comics and/or Bryke’s commentary.
The rest of my work? There’s stories that focus directly on the Beifongs (where Wuko exists but is in no way the focus of the fic) and stories that focus on Wu and Mako, but are they canon? That completely depends on what your definition of canon is.
Is your definition of canon as something only taking place during the source material’s timeline? Then the rest of my work isn’t for you.
Is your definition of canon taking into consideration only what the showrunners have said and/or done? Then you’ll be moderately disappointed with my work. I do keep it firmly lodged in the world that Bryke created, but I do take some liberties (including ignoring all of the heavy-hitting only a straight person could write this homophobic world dealing with Korra’s coming out in the comics - my world isn’t homophobic, because as a pansexual damn near in her 50′s I’ve got zero desire to write that).
In my mind, there are three different categories when it comes to Fanfiction:
CANON
Filler fanfic: The kind of fanfic that focuses on scenes that were implied but that we weren’t shown in the source material and sticks to pure canon as closely as possible
HEADCANON
Broadening fanfic: The kind of fanfic that runs parallel to canon but delves deeper into the source material and broadens and expands on it through giving agency to minor characters, creating OCs and/or is set in either pre- or post-canon time periods
Fix It fanfic: The kind of fanfic that stays in the canon world but is there to “fix” the source material by taking a major thing that happened in the source material and either ignoring it or changing it; a major character death, for example, or a major plot point (like writing that Su Beifong was the one to attack Republic City and deploy the Colossus rather than Kuvira, for example) or, yes, creating a romantic relationship between characters that is not canon
CANON?
What Is The Source Material Anyhow fanfic: Korra and Asami are here on Earth and Korra works in a coffeeshop where Rich Girl Asami the Korean Pop Star flirts with her and they wear cute sneakers and lacy bras and have mobile phones and bending what’s bending?
Crossover fanfic: Korra and Asami meet the kids from Scooby Doo and have adventures in the Mystery Van where Korra bends at the Bad Guys and Velma tries to get into Asami’s pants, much to Daphne and Korra’s utter jealous rage
Smut fanfic: Fuck characterizations, fuck the source material, this is porn, all we’re here for is fucking, preferably as nasty as possible
In all but The Prince and the Bodyguard my fic is solidly in the Headcanon category, and straddles the Broadening/Fix it border. Fix It because Wuko is not actually canon, after all. Broadening, however, because I really do stick to the world and canon events, even though most of it takes place in the future.
I can tell you that I am a 49 year old woman who was in a same-sex marriage with kids (and who was widowed three years ago) and therefore has not only a whole shit-ton of life experience but also has previous fanfic writing experience under her belt. I can also tell you that I have done exhaustive research on certain aspects of Imperial China, for example, so that I can write Wu’s background as a Crown Prince of the Earth Kingdom in a way that I think is not only canon but goes far, far deeper than Bryke were ever able to do on 23 minutes a week on Nickelodeon. Some people appreciate this sort of epic novel approach I have to my fanfic; some people just want to see Wu and Mako holding hands and having a sweet little kiss in the turtleduck boats and could not give a shit about all of my research and efforts to enrich the source material. Which is fine, by the way! It’s just not what I am writing.
I have two kinds of readers: the kind that read the first couple of fics I linked to above who enjoy them and leave nice feedback and go on their merry way without bothering with the rest and my RIDE OR DIE readers who inhale all of my work over a couple of days barely coming up to eat or do anything else and who send me these amazing heartfelt (and sometimes delightfully incoherent) letters about it and who loyally follow my work after that. There doesn’t seem to be much middle ground! I appreciate both kind (although I confess to really loving my RIDE OR DIE readers).
So really, it’s up to you, as the reader, as to what you want to read.
The sad truth about it is that there is so little Wuko fanfic out there that I think your choices are pretty limited. It’s a show that ended over three years ago that was aired on Nickelodeon, written for adults but aimed at kids. I loved TLOK - obviously, I’ve written close to a million words about it - but in many ways it was kind of a mess. A well beloved mess! But mess, nonetheless. With very little exception most of the fanfic out there is based on Korrasami, and most of that doesn’t really give any real thought to how canon it is or isn’t. It is what it is.
However, this much I can tell you about my fanfic: I love Wu and Mako as a couple. I loved them together in the show and I continue to love them. I am currently writing 12 years into the future from the end of the show, so they are not exactly the same people they were when the show ended. (God, I would hope not. Most of us do mature and change.) They have a life, they have kids, they’ve gone through a lot. They are still together. In my fanfic they will always be together, end stop. Is it canon? Well, obviously Wu and Mako living in Republic City and having three (soon to be four) children together is not canon. That is not in the show. But then again, neither is Wuko itself. So take that as you will!
