Watched a video about these "AI assistants" that Meta has launched with celebrity faces (Kendall Jenner, Snoop Dogg etc.). Somebody speculated/mentioned in the comments that eventually Meta wants to sell assistant apps to companies, but that makes ... no sense.
If they mean in the sense of a glorified search engine that gives you subtly wrong answers half the time and can't do math, sure - not that that's any different than the stuff that already exists (????)
But if they literally mean assistant, that's complete bogus. The bulk of an assistant's job is organizing things - getting stuff purchased, herding a bunch of hard-to-reach people into the same meeting, booking flights and rides, following up on important conversations. Yes, for some of these there's already an app that has automated the process to a degree. But if these processes were sufficiently automated, companies would already have phased out assistant positions. Sticking a well-read chat bot on top of Siri won't solve this.
If I ask my assistant to get me the best flight to New York, I don't want it to succeed 80 % of time and the rest of the time, book me a flight at 2 a.m. or send me to New York, Florida or put me on a flight that's 8 hours longer than necessary. And yes, you can probably optimize an app + chat bot for this specific task so it only fails 2 % of the time. But you cannot optimize a program to be good at everything–booking flights, booking car rentals, organizing catering, welcoming people at the front desk and basically any other request a human could think off. What you're looking for is a human brain and body. Humans can improvise, prioritize, make decisions, and, very importantly, interact freely with the material world. Developing a sufficiently advanced assistant is a pipe dream.

But while tipping for in-person services stopped during the height of the pandemic, other types of services exploded. Suddenly things like food and package delivery and grocery pickup were considered safety essentials. Places that had never asked for a gratuity before, like fast-food restaurants and coffee shops, were now asking for tips. Digital tipping systems that have increased throughout the pandemic have led to a phenomenon of tipflation, putting stress on everyone’s personal finances. And newer service jobs became popular, like concierge health care, where doctors and nurses come to your home to do exams.

I had an ok week. I fixed some bugs and added a system to force-set filetypes.
You will be asked on update if you want to regenerate some animation thumbnails. The popup explains the decision, I recommend 'yes'.

The difference between a zip and an Ugoira and a cbz is not perfectly clear cut. I am happy with the current filetype scanner--and there are a couple more improvements this week--but I'm sure there will always be some fuzziness in the difficult cases. This also applies to some clever other situations, like files that secretly store a zip concatenated after a jpeg. You might want that file to be considered something other than hydrus thinks it technically is.
So, on any file selection, you can now hit right-click->manage->force filetype. You can set any file to be seen as any other file. The changes take affect immediately, are reflected in presentation and system:filetype searches, and the files themselves will be renamed on disk (to aid 'open externally'). The original filetype is remembered, and everything is easily undoable through the same dialog.
Also added is 'system:has forced filetype', under the 'system:file properties' entry, if you'd like to find what you have set one way or the other.
This is experimental, and I don't recommend it for the most casual users, but if you are comfortable, have a play with it. I still need to write better error handling for complete nonsense cases (e.g. calling a webm a krita is probably going to raise an error somewhere), but let me know how you get on.
other highlights
I fixed some dodgy numbers in Mr. Bones (deleted file count) and the file history chart (inbox/archive count). If you have had some whack results here, let me know if things are any better! If they aren't, does changing the search to something more specific than 'all my files'/'system:everything' improve things?
Some new boot errors, mostly related to missing database components, are now handled with nicer dialog prompts, and even interactive console prompts serverside.
I _may_ have fixed/relieved the 'program is hung when restored from minimise to system tray' issue, but I am not confident. If you still have this, let me know how things are now. If you still get a hang, more info on what your client was doing during the minimise would help--I just cannot reproduce this problem reliably.
Thanks to a user who figured out all the build script stuff, the Docker package is now Alpine 3.19. The Docker package should have newer libraries and broader file support.

The first non-experimental beta of hydrus was released on December 14th, 2011. We are now going on twelve years.
Like many, I had an imperfect 2023. I've no complaints, but IRL problems from 2022 cut into my free time and energy, and I regret that it impacted my hydrus work time. I had hoped to move some larger projects forward this year, but I was mostly treading water with little features and optimisations. That said, looking at the changelog for the year reveals good progress nonetheless, including: multiple duplicate search and filter speed and accuracy improvements, and the 'one file in this search, the other in this search' system; significant Client API expansions, in good part thanks to a user, including the duplicates system, more page inspections, multiple local file domains, and http headers; new sidecar datatypes and string processing tools; improvements to 'related tags' search; much better transparency support, including 'system:has transparency'; more program stability, particularly with mpv; much much faster tag autocomplete results, and faster tag and file search cancelling; the inc/dec rating service; better file timestamp awareness and full editing capability; the SauceNAO-style image search under 'system:similar files'; blurhashes; more and better system predicate parsing, and natural system predicate parsing in the normal file search input; a background database table delete system that relieves huge jobs like 'delete the PTR'; more accurate Mr. Bones and File History, and both windows now taking any search; and multiple new file formats, like HEIF and gzip and Krita, and thumbnails and full rendering for several like PSD and PDF, again in good part thanks to a user, and then most recently the Ugoira and CBZ work.
I'm truly looking forward to the new year, and I plan to keep working and putting out releases every week. I deeply appreciate the feedback and help over the years. Thank you!

A GUIDE FOR NEW USERS TO ERC20 TOKENS AND ADDRESSES

Considered the most popular token specification on the Ethereum blockchain, ERC-20 or Ethereum Request for Comments-20 was released in 2015 and has since enabled standards for creating digital assets that can seamlessly interact. To enable their infrastructure to receive, store, exchange, and send ERC20 token development, wallets and other services that are compatible with the standard use this protocol.
HOW TO RECEIVE AN ERC-20 TOKEN
Most likely, you have found an interesting Ethereum project and want to receive its native ERC-20 token. Should this sum up your current circumstances, you’re in the proper location.
The first thing you need to know is that all Ethereum addresses support ERC-20 tokens. While this is a given, it is the wallet provider’s prerogative to provide permission to access the ERC-20 token balance. In other words, some wallet providers support ETH addresses but may prevent you from seeing the ERC-20 tokens associated with the address.
This is why it is advisable to research the compatibility of wallets in advance. Make sure your wallet not only supports ERC-20 tokens, but also lists the specific token you intend to receive, especially if you plan to receive airdrops. In most cases, airdropped tokens are obscure digital assets that have not yet been listed on exchanges. If this is the case, it is unlikely that exchange wallet addresses will support these tokens.
MyEtherWallet (MEW) and MetaMask are the suggested wallets for ERC-20 tokens.Whatever the ERC-20 token, you can be sure that they can be accessed through these two wallets.
Before opening an account with either of these two ETH wallets, it is important to note that they are self-care wallets. Consequently, they will store your private keys on their devices and expect you to write down and store your seed phrase. A seed phrase is a list of 12 random words that you must enter whenever you lose access to your wallet or forget your password.
It’s simple and straightforward to create an account on MetaMask and MEW. However, for this guide, we will stick to the MetaMask option.
METAMASK: HOW TO CREATE AN ETH ADDRESS
Visit https://metamask.io/ and find the extension compatible with your browser.
Click and install the appropriate extension.
Once downloaded and installed, click the extension icon and follow the instructions to create and confirm your password.
Then accept the terms of use and greenlight the extension to reveal your seed phrase. It is best to keep several copies of these code words in safe places. You have successfully registered your account once you have backed up your seed phrase.
To view your ETH or ERC-20 address, navigate to and select the Deposit Ether Directly tab . Then click View Account to see and copy your address. You can now paste the address into airdrop portals that request an ERC-20 address to receive free tokens.
HOW TO VIEW ERC-20 TOKENS ON METAMASK
So now that you’ve received airdropped ERC-20 tokens, how do you view them? This is also quite simple if you follow the instructions below.
If you can’t find the token when you click the Assets tab , you may need to add the token manually.
To broaden the search, click the Add Token tab and choose Custom Token.
You must enter the token address in the appropriate field. Most of the time, the token symbol and decimal fields are auto-populated. Otherwise, you may need to locate the token project documentation to access the details. On Ethereum blockchain explorers such as Etherscan or Ethplorer, you can look up the token contract address. Better yet, you can ask the sender directly for the token address. Airdrops that conceal the addresses of token contracts should be avoided.
After filling in all the fields, click Next and select Add token to confirm.
METAMASK: HOW TO VIEW AND RECEIVE NFT TOKENS
Due to the explosion of airdrops for ERC-721 standard tokens or what are commonly called non-fungible tokens (NFTs), we decided to detail some of the processes involved in receiving and viewing them in your wallet.
First, you need to access your ETH address as shown above. Collectibles are not currently visible on the web version of MetaMask, so once the transaction is confirmed, it is advised to view the NFT on the mobile app.
If the NFT is not visible in the collectibles section, click Add Collectibles and enter the collectible ID and address in the appropriate field. Once this is done, the NFT should appear in the Collectible tab .
CONCLUSION

In spite of marketers’ best efforts to try to overcome the limitations of the e-commerce platform, the fact remains that for all the ease and convenience of shopping online at home, there are some matters that can only be resolved inside a BAM store. Unless a customer has already performed the task before and is now simply in re-order mode, there’s risk in buying some new things.

Walmart, though, is making significant steps to help resolve some of the time and space gaps. Their efforts are not perfect, and could indeed raise eyebrows, but they are big steps. For example, in September 2022 they expanded virtual try-on in the women’s department. They had bought start-up Zeekit in 2021, and the technology allowed users to upload a photo of themselves. The AI and AR would take it from there, letting shoppers “try on” clothing right there on the screen. I wrote about it at the time, and reaction from my MBAs was mixed.
And now they have partnered with Perfect Corp. to offer AR-powered try-on in the cosmetics department. Users can sample 1400 different products, and this time do not need to upload a selfie. Oh, and it is all designed to work within Walmart’s iOS app. Score one more point for mobile.

Now for people like me who absolutely hate to shop for clothing, virtual try-on would be golden. I’d even be willing to take the risk on the first purchase when it comes to actual fit. Let’s face it, a 34” waist in one brand may be comfy, but in another brand may be either too big or too small.
But I understand Walmart’s inclinations to try this with women first, because—no sexism intended—women tend to be more conscious of these matters. If Walmart can crack this nut, it should be easy peasy to rope in the guys.
I also understand the limitations of even these high tech solutions. Color can vary considerably across phones, tablets, and laptops, by virtue of settings and quality of the device. Nuanced shades in the red family, for example, could come out looking muted or like a fire truck.
Then there’s the issue of privacy. Walmart swears that no user data (including images) will be saved from the cosmetics try-on. But for its clothing service, it does depend on just that. Would you want to share a photo of yourself with Walmart—or anyone, for that matter—just for the sake of seeing how you might look in that new dress?
Walmart is also considering how to use the clothing try-on inside its stores, with sophisticated mirrors that have cameras built in. Stand in front of the mirror, and then tell the machine what to do next. If trying on clothes is not your jam, this could save tons of time.
Back to the cosmetics, I see this greatly enhancing sales. Walmart may not be every woman’s first choice for beauty products, but this could pierce that veil. I have to laugh every time I enter a Dillards or similar department store, and find myself having to cut a trail through a cosmetics department that is at least a couple hundred linear feet long. Female clerks in lab coats await customers, and they give them personal applications. It’s great theatre, because it has the look and feel of science going on.
Which then raises another question. Do women crave that 1-on-1 interaction for something so uniquely personal as one’s choice of beauty products? Speaking for myself and not all men, that would send alarm bells and flashing lights into action. No way, no how. Alas, we are not all the same.
I realize there are some for whom purchase of these types of products necessitates a visit to stores. I also realize that the majority of the reluctant ones are probably closer in age to me than they are my students. When you have done something a certain way for decades, it can be hard to learn and adopt new methods.
I bet my tech-savvy daughters would be all over the cosmetics try-on. Instead of the usual Ulta gift card I put in their Christmas stocking, I could just as easily do it for Walmart and let them get on their phones. Because they are young, they are not as likely to be stuck in their ways.
There’s no future in getting old, and let’s face it, my generation’s major consuming days are behind us. Subtract 40 years, and you have legions of young shoppers open to new ideas. Walmart is genius for seeing this future.And that, my friends, is always something I am willing to try on.
