Sometimes one is just really late learning about amazing people… That is the case with me when it comes to Rachel Hollis…

The first time I heard about her was just before attending doTERRA’s leadership retreat in March of this year (2019). I heard all of these folks talking about this woman as a phenomenon, okay, I wonder what all the fuss is about…

She starts off by saying… “I’m Rachel Hollis, a proud working mama with four kids and an ultra hunky husband. I worship coffee like a deity, I read books like my life depends on it and think vodka with La Croix is one of the greatest inventions of the last decade. Being so behind the times I quickly purchased her book, “Girl, Wash Your Face: Stop Believing the Lies About Who You Are so You Can Become Who You Were Meant to Be” on Audible so maybe I could listen to it before I got to the retreat! I immediately started to listen and quickly realized what the fuss was about! I finished listening to the book in a couple of days, SHE IS FANTASTIC!

IT WAS PERFECT WISDOM!!!

Here are a few pieces of wisdom I LOVED!

When you find yourself in a season of burnout, perhaps you are wrestling with the wrong dream you should “retreat to your why…”

Ken talked about looking for patterns or clues to get clarity about your why… He described three basic questions to ask yourself when you are in a “burn out situation”

Who do I most want to help?

What problem do I most want to solve?

What solution do I most want to provide?

“Basically this is the same question asked three different ways — it is a psychological technique to get your brain and your heart to connect” SOOOO GOOD!

Rachel cuts to an, in my opinion, well placed commercial about “Talkspace.com” suggesting therapy for entrepreneurs in burnout is REAL — SO THANK YOU FOR THAT RACHEL!!! Here is a brief description of talk space…

They come back from the commercial and talk about starting small to avoid overwhelm…

Rachel said, “When people tell me they are burned out I just wonder if they are doing something that doesn’t light their heart up anymore…”

Ken totally agreed, giving her an AMEN and said, “the World Health Organization just deemed burn out as a medical/health condition!!!”

OMG!!!

Ken went on to say, what you are feeling is REAL however, burnout is not real it’s really build up… Truly no one is burned out until you die that’s when the flame goes out…

Five causes of Burn out/Build up

You don’t have any passion for the work anymore…

Toxic environment

You are overwhelmed — you can barely breathe

Being underappreciated people want recognition and appreciation not compensation

You are bored…

Later they discussed Ken’s book and concept the “Proximity Principle”

Basically it explains the theory around, “you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with…” Who are you surrounding yourself with? The equation for this theory is Right people + the right places = opportunity

He goes on to describe the 5 types of people you may need to be in proximity to: The professor, The Producer, The Professional, The Peer and The Mentor

Such good advice to think about and work on!!!

So as I have described in some past Walking Within Wisdom posts I have several more pages of notes on this podcast and it is certainly worth taking a listen! I will continue to listen to both Ken and Rachel’s podcasts regularly because they certainly gave me a boost! Perhaps there will be more Walking Within Wisdom with them :-)

I read this back to back with her other book and I regret this. The humblebrag becomes quite an issue. It NEVER STOPS. 

Hollis writes and writes and brags. The book is also majorly in Christian positioning. I was interested to see how she would contribute to this genre and to the best seller list. But, there was nothing about Christianity in the book. It’s like being told the book had science fiction themes in the book and it might’ve mentioned science like once. 

Disappointing all around, but interesting concept. Here’s the thing, there’s nothing new. Hollis is a mogul for sure, but unfortunately, her content has fallen flat. 

The one thing: I hate bringing down women for writing books. I appreciate women who are authors. But this felt uncomfortable. I wish I had something better to say.
