Fate and Phantasms #156

Today on Fate and Phantasms we’re making the clown prince of crime himself, the Archer of Shinjuku! Like the Caster of the Timeless Temple, a lot of pseudosingularity servants have their true names hidden. Personally I think it’s a dumb mechanic, but for the interests of keeping up appearances we’ll hide their names in the opening posts as well. That being said, it’s hard to go in-depth on a character and their abilities without revealing their identity, so expect spoilers below the cut.

 James Moriarty is a Mastermind Rogue for perfection in deception, as well as a Divination Wizard because some things you just can’t plan for. But you can take credit after the fact, and you’ll look super smart for doing so!

Race and Background

Despite your reputation, you are a Human, giving you +1 Dexterity and Wisdom. You also get Sleight of Hand proficiency for better burgling, and the Keen Mind feat for +1 Intelligence and a bevvy of brain bonuses that will make your DM’s life harder.

You started your life as a professor, but tbh it’s a lot easier to just grab the Criminal background. It’s also a lot more useful, giving you Deception and Stealth proficiency.

Ability Scores

No surprise here, but your highest score is going to be Intelligence. Your best crimes are basically “I wonder what this would do”, you’re like the mathematics version of a mad scientist. Aside from that, your Charisma is also pretty good, manipulating others is your go-to method of crime. After that is Wisdom, because playing people only works as long as you know you’re not being played. Your Dexterity isn’t amazing, but we can fix that later with magical nonsense. Your Constitution is bad, but your Strength is worse. You’re an old man, andyou definitely feel like one.

Class Levels

1. Rogue 1: First level rogues get a ton of proficiencies, like Dexterity and Intelligence saves, Perception, Insight, Performance, and Persuasion. The first one lets you hunt a bit easier in the dark streets of Shinjuku, while the other three make your manipulations more magnificent. You also get Expertise in two skills, doubling your proficiency bonus in Deception and Persuasion.

You also learn Thieves’ Cant. It’s a language. More usefully, you can make a Sneak Attack once per turn by using a ranged or finesse weapon on a creature you either have advantage on or you have an ally next to. Right now this adds 1d6 to your attack damage, but it’ll grow as you level up.

As far as your weapon goes, a hand crossbow might be an understatement for your coffin, but you’re nothing if not practical.

2. Wizard 1: Going over to wizard right away gives you Arcane Recovery, letting you regain a little bit of magic over a short rest once per long rest.

To make that more useful, you also get Spells that you can cast and prepare with your Intelligence. Message will carry your schemes to your minion’s ears, Prestidigitation is simple sleight of hand tricks to wow yokels. True Strike actually kind of has a purpose since the advantage matters for your sneak attacks but not really because there’s like eight other ways to get a sneak attack that aren’t as bad. Cause Fear strikes at the heart of foes and allies alike. Mage Armor lets you wear a suit into combat like a nerd. Magic Missile gives you a plethora of magical bullets that can’t miss. Disguise Self gives you a magical disguise kit. Feather Fall lets you catch Guda and land without breaking a hip, and Unseen Servant lets you expand your criminal empire with a lackey of your very own!

3. Rogue 2: Last level was a lot. Let’s calm down a bit with a simple bit of roguery. Cunning Action lets you dash, disengage, or hide as a bonus action, freeing up your main action for attacks or spells.

4. Rogue 3: Third level rogues can pick their specialty, and as a Mastermind yours lies in manipulating others for your own gain. You’re a Master of Intrigue giving you proficiency with disguises and forgery. You can also mimic the accent of a creature you’ve heard for at least one minute, well enough to pass yourself off as a native

You’re also a Master of Tactics, letting you help as a bonus action and with a range of 30 feet.

On top of that, your Steady Aim makes True Strike useless, giving you advantage on one attack as a bonus action, plus you have to use up your movement.

5. Rogue 4: Use this Ability Score Improvement to bump up your Dexterity so you can actually shoot people. Also, while you only get one attack per turn, you can always flavor your sneak attack as a burst of gunfire. You’re certainly going to do enough damage to qualify as multiple shots.

6. Rogue 5: Fifth level rogues get an Uncanny Dodge as a reaction, halving the damage of an incoming attack. You fight berserkers in Armani, you’ll need it.

7. Rogue 6: Your second round of Expertise will double up on your Thieves’ Tools and Performance for extra manipulation and safe cracking.

8. Rogue 7: Evasion is a good skill. I don’t think I say that enough,but it is. It turns your failed dexterity saves into successes and your successes into no-sells. If your big plan is dropping a meteor on the world, you’d better be ready for the splash damage.

9. Wizard 2: Second level wizards get their specialty, and Divination wizards are the masters of planning. And from a player’s standpoint they make planning so much easier. You could meticulously plan your enemy’s downfall over the course of days or weeks, or you could just slap a 1 to their wisdom save with six seconds of preparation thanks to Portents. You get two d20s each day that you can use in place of a d20 roll near you. Ruin someone’s skill check, guarantee your critical hit, whatever.

You also get more magic! Alarm is our go-to for low magic builds, but it’s also super useful for traps You can also Comprehend Languages because you’re pretty well-learned.

10. Wizard 3: Third level wizards get second level spells, like Enhance Ability to make your disguises even more perfect and Magic Weapon to make your Noble Phantasm a bit more noble.

11. Rogue 8: Use this ASI to bump up your Dexterity for more gooder shooting.

12. Rogue 9: Your next bout of Mastermind goodies makes you an Insightful Manipulator, letting you spend 1 minute to observe a creature in two of four ways; their intelligence, wisdom, charisma, or class levels. You might also learn some backstory, which’ll make your DM’s life even harder! Or easier, depending on how you use it.

13. Rogue 10: Use this ASI to bring your Intelligence up for better spellcasting. Most of your spells don’t actually need your intelligence, but it also helps you show up Holmes, so it’s rewarding in its own right.

14. Rogue 11: You now have Reliable Talent, so every skill check you’re proficient in will always come up at least a 10 on the die. Yes, this does mean you’re scary good at making people do what you want.

15. Rogue 12: Another ASI! Bump your Dexterity up one more time for even gooderer shooting and AC.

16. Rogue 13: Thirteenth level masterminds are masters of Misdirection, using your reaction to shift an attack to another nearby creature instead of you. Let the brutes fight it out, you’ve got schemes to hatch!

17. Rogue 14: Your Blindsense lets you sense invisible creatures within 10 feet of you. That’s not a great range to work with a ranged weapon, but at least you’ll know when an assassin sneaks up on you.

18. Rogue 15: Your Slippery Mind gives you proficiency with Wisdom saves. That feature name sounds really weird though, it sounds like it should help with lying or something. Oh well.

19. Rogue 16: Use this last ASI to bump up your Charisma for slightly better manipulation.

20. Rogue 17: Your capstone level is also the level you get the last mastermind goodie! Your Soul of Deceit lets you rewrite any attempts to read your mind, matching your deception check versus the reader’s insight check. On top of that, magic will always say you’re telling the truth, no matter what you’re really saying.

Pros:

Soul of Deceit is super useful for you, as it basically makes it impossible to tell if you’re lying. Without magic, people have to be your deception check, and when they’re facing off against a roll with +15 and advantage they’re going to have a bad time. Basically, unless you’re going up against another rogue with expertise in insight, you’re pretty set. What’d’ya mean we already made one like that?

Portent is just really good. Especially for classes where every hit counts. That’s it, it’s just busted.

Beyond simply lying, you’re good at manipulating people, reading into their wants and needs, then stringing them along for your own gain. Insightful Manipulator lets you read people at a glance, and your Keen Mind means you’ll remember what you learned long after the people you learned it from forget you.

Cons:

You are super squishy, with exactly 100 HP at level 20. Try not to go over any waterfalls, it won’t end well for you.

Despite hitting hard enough to count as a barrage, you still technically get only one attack per turn. Missing your shot is a huge letdown, so just... don’t do that?

Your limited spell slots mean you need to be careful with how you use them. The guaranteed damage of Magic Missile is tempting, but you should probably pace yourself.

Artists and High Prices

(use this one please I fixed some of the math)

Let’s say an artist on DA visually makes 36k a year which is a LOT by any standard in the CS community, and not attainable by 99% of people. Let’s say, being nice, they have 1 roommate and pay $700 for rent AND bills each month. When you are a freelancer (assuming in the US) you owe at least 15.3 percent of your earnings per quarter. Its usually advised to put away at LEAST 40 to 50 percent of your total income away for taxes. This does not even include state or federal income tax. This does not even include medical insurance if you have it. When you work W2 work, your employer pays half of your taxes, and sometimes covers medical benefits. You get neither of these as a freelancer. So say you make 36k a year on CS alone, or 3k a month. What you actually make in livable wages is 1.5k a month or 18k a year. The average amount of rent THROUGHOUT the US is $1,231. Let’s be generous and say you live in a cheaper place with that roommate to accommodate your income. So you pay $700 toward rent and bills each month. That’s $8,400 a year. Let’s say now that you buy groceries separate from your roommate and pay $250 a month. You don’t qualify for any food assistance because of your income rate. That’s 3000 a year if you never eat out for any of your meals and stick to that budget. Now since you are a freelancer the only way to afford medical insurance is to pay. Because of your reported income you also do not qualify for medical insurance help such as medicaid or medicare (talking in the US here). So say that its about $300 a month being nice for your basic premiums. That’s $3,600. Except the average deductible is about $4,300 per year, meaning you have to pay that amount into your insurance before they will cover any expense. So let’s do some math. You live in an apartment, with a roommate, making 18k in USABLE income a year. You buy $250 in groceries and pay $4,300 into your medical insurance deductible. All this alone leaves you with $2,300 left. Oh wait, I forgot about car insurance. You know what. I’m going to be nice and say that because of your limited wages you can only take public transport. Let’s say you take the subway or a bus in whatever city you’re in, and you pay $2.00 per ride. You don’t go out every day because you work from home, but let’s say you go out about half of the days of the week. So that’s, let’s say, $6.00 a week for public transport. Round it up to about $25 a month. So here we are, you’re left with $2,000 leftover income for the entire year. That’s about $166 dollars left over a month to work with after all of the things you NEED to pay. I’m probably leaving out other expenses that I can’t even think of, but I feel like this is a reasonable scenario. This means a person you see making CS on DA, who makes $3k a month or more, (in this scenario) actually has $150 in “excess” income. Can they live on this? Of course. Do MOST people and CS owners on DA make 3k or over a month from CS alone? Hell no. The argument saying that a person getting bids up to $1000 for about 4-5 hours of work doesn’t really work in the CS market. CS have to be tapered as not to saturate the market. In the end there are not THAT many people willing to shell out those large amounts. The CS creator is usually not the only one creating adopts each month. The more they create, the more taxes they also owe in the end. I’d say a more fair average to a CS creator or admin is more like 10-15k a year (6500 or so after taxes). Factoring that in though, a person with that low a wage, if it is their only income, might have other circumstances like financial aid, disability, or have rent covered by welfare or family. In the end, it really doesn’t fucking matter. Saying things like “everyone has to pay bills and taxes.” So? You’re right, but why does that mean a CS creator can’t accept whatever money people are willing to pay? Why do they have to cap it at a certain price to make others happy, when their main goal is and should be to keep themselves afloat financially? The CS market is a business, and people don’t treat it like a business, which is unfair. The market dictates its own worth and its own prices, and it shouldn’t be on the moral compass of the creator to stymie their cash flow because people don’t or can’t pay what they’re asking, or pay what the prices or auctions go up to. When prices go up to these amounts, people aren’t just paying for the “4-5 hours” worth of work. They’re paying for the YEARS worth of work put into the CS, put into the community, put into the group. They’re paying FOR THE EXCLUSIVITY YOU’RE COMPLAINING ABOUT. Its literally the ONLY way prices get so high. The more obtainable a thing is, the less people are willing to pay for it. You might ask, well they can keep their auctions uncapped or their prices high, but why not add more free MYOS or contests? That won’t effect their income right? Wrong. The behind-the-scenes of maintaining a CS group is more complex than people want to give credit for. Because its such an unstable fluctuating market, you constantly have to gauge your output, constantly have to gauge the saturation via auctions and MYOs/contests. Its literally a full time job that is hard to maintain WITHOUT a dedicated GROUP of people. AND most of the people don’t make a steady income. Most of the time, the admins are volunteers or are paid in whatever adopts they’re able to pick up. Just imagine if CS creators had to pay employer wages and claim their CS as a business? CS have turned into something that isn’t and SHOULDN’T be dictated by a childish and naive moral etiquette. It remains because the vast majority of people within this subculture are young or ignorant of its inner workings and do not understand the actual work that goes into maintaining some of these groups. Please let people just make what they’re willing. Don’t try and make them feel like shit and greedy trash for taking what people are WILLING to give. You’re hurting the artists, you’re hurting the market, you’re hurting the culture and the hobby that you love. Please fucking stop.

Hi Dx, could you explain to me how the application and the training process of FY1/2 doctors work in the UK? E.g. if I graduated with a medical degree from the UK and I wanted to train only in London (by applying for hospitals/clinics in London), would that be possible? Are training places more competitive pertaining to geographic location in the UK? Also, if at the point of graduation, a junior doctor was set on becoming a particular doctor e.g. GP, could they work in solely GP rotations?

Hello! Well done on making your way through med school, whatever stage you are currently at.I'm going to limit my reply to foundation training applications for UK grads as per your question. When we apply via FPAS (or whatever they call it these days), we effectively have to rank ALL the deaneries in the UK, from the ones we most want tp the ones we least want. Which means we are effectively applying for a foundation job anywhere in the UK. Now, the places you rank top are going to consider you first. And how seriously they take you will depend on your score, which depends on your SJT, your university ranking score, your previous qualifications, papers etc. We don't usually have interviews for foundation years, so it's generally mostly down to not doing terribly in your SJT. In your case, you'd probably do something similar to what I did (rank the London foundation deaneries first then rank the rest depending on geographic proximity to where you want to be). But I'll warn you that even getting into a 'London deanery' doesn't guarantee a job in London, as many of their hospitals will also ve in the surrounding towns! As you suspect, the area in and around London is really competitive! And actually, certain cities up North or in Scotland are almost as bad (people who grew up there usually want to stay there, too!). So it's usually the isolated, obscure places (and midlands, which sre not obscure at all) that are the least competitive. That said, although London is popular, it's also busy and stressful, whereas a lot of the less popular places are friendlier, less busy or chaotic, and pay higher rates for locum shifts, and have much lower living costs. Some of my friends did terribly in their SJT exam and ended up in obscure bits of the Scottish Highlands, but they actually loved their jobs much more than my 'successful' friends who were miserable in large London hospitals. You genuinely cannot predict where you will be happy. So if you don't get in and around London, you'll still be OK. You might even have a nicer time!The next step after being accepted by a foundation deanery involves ranking the jobs they will offer you. Many Londonish places ask you to request whether you want to be in or out of london for your placements. And after that they will ask you to rank every FY1/FY2 combination job in order of combinations of rotations and hospitals you most want down to the ones you least want.Now, this is not a 'pick and mix' situation. You get to pick the job and its six to eight rotations as a *whole*. So for example, you might think about whether you preferred FY1at RLH for geris, gastro, surgery FY2 at WHX for paeds, A&E and GP, compared to FY1at WHX for acute med, resp, surgery FY2 at RLH for GP, Psych and ENT. But you won't be able to pick the jobs that make up thr rotations. Sometimes hospitals let ypu swap FY2 years or individual rotations with people, but it's not given. Though just like before, at each stage there is absolutely no guarantee that you will get what you want; you're likely to get a surgical placement, medical placement and either GP or psych, but everything else is down to luck, so if you wanted a rotation that there aren't many jobs out there for, you might not get it. So don't feel too bad if you don't get your top combination or hospital, it's not the end of the world.Even if you know you want to do GP, you can't just pick training that will be just GP jobs. But that's actually a good thing, and it's really important to understand why. Firstly, GP jobs are /were unbanded, so you'd be broke without any on-calls! But also, more importantly, you cannot learn how to be a good doctor from one speciality alone. A good GP is the way they are precisely because of the wide array of specialities they have experienced! Even GP trainees only spend about 1/2 of their 3 year training in GP placements in surgeries, the rest of that time is spent in hospital. So it means that by the time they become a fully qualified GP, they will have spent at least 3 1/3 years of their 5 years as a doctor in hospital, rotating around different specialities and learning from those specialists. That said you CAN pick placements which will give you a good grounding in specialities which are useful in GP, such as: A&E or acute medicine Psych ENTObs and Gynae Paeds GeriatricsDerm or Ophthalmology (rare)and GP.You won't necessarily get a chance to experience all of these in foundation or GP training, but having as many as you can get would give you a good grounding in the kinds of thing you see every day as a GP, and give you confidence in separating out the emergencies that you need to refer, versus the things you can deal with. Arguably, all specialities, even more general medical or surgical ones round you out as a person, but I feel the above can make up more of what you see and might feel less confident about as a new GP. We all learn a basic level of medicine and surgery, but I notice that people feel a LIT less confident with the specialities they never covered. But it's not insurmountable; with study and experience we could all become well-rounded medics or GPs.Think about the specialities you are considering, then ask yourself 'which jobs would give me the most relevant knowledge for this?'. And work from there. It doesn't matter if you don't get every placement you want, either. Sometimes trying something different can show us that we live things we never expected to...Good luck, and let me know how you get on.

Fate and Phantasms Anniversary Special

Today on Fate and Phantasms we celebrate our 1 year anniversary! If it wasn't for all our fans we'd probably have given up ages ago, so we're going with a fan-picked character! (Don't worry if yours didn't get picked this time around, we'll hold onto them for another day)

Now we're building Romulus-Quirinus, the divine ancestor of Rome and King of Nation Building!

They're an Order Cleric to make civilization building easy, and an Astral Self Monk to make clearing the way even easier.

Race and Background

Despite ascending to godhood, you start as a Human, which gives you +1 Dexterity and Wisdom, proficiency with Religion for obvious reasons, and the Fighting Initiate feat for unarmed fighting so you can punch real good.

You're also an outlander because it's hard to be anything else before the country's built. You get proficiency with Athletics and Survival.

Ability Scores

Everything should be 40, but we're going with the standard array to make arguing with your DM a bit easier. Make your Wisdom super high for a better time ruling people and smiting them, follow it up with Strength because you really like that fancy gold armor. Your Dexterity is also pretty good, because that armor is optional. Charisma helps with ruling people too, so keep that above average. This leaves your Constitution lower than we'd like, but we're dumping Intelligence. You are by no means dumb, it's just the score that affects the build the least.

Class Levels

1. Monk 1: Starting off as a monk is pretty much mandatory so we have a martial weapon for the feat we just took, but this also means you start off with your first ascension's Unarmored Defense, adding your wisdom modifier to your AC while you aren't wearing armor.

Also while not wearing armor you can use Martial Arts, which lets you use dexterity instead of strength for your punches and you can attack as a bonus action if you attack with your main action. It also gives you a d4 martial arts die, but your fighting style is better, so...

On top of all that, you get proficiency with Strength and Dexterity saves, as well as History and Insight. You kinda are history.

2. Monk 2: Second level monks get Unarmored Movement, making you a little bit faster without the giant gold platemail. Aside from that, you get Ki points equal to your monk level per short rest, which you can spend to attack twice, dodge, disengage, or dash as a bonus action. You get something next level that is way more useful though.

3. Monk 3: Third level monks can Deflect Missiles as a reaction, rendering arrows and slingshots slightly less effective. You also gain the Arms of the Astral Self, letting you beef up your arms as a bonus action. Your anchor arms last for 10 minutes, and while active you can use wisdom instead of strength or dexterity to make attacks and strength saves/checks. You also get a long range on your unarmed attacks, and they deal force damage instead of bludgeoning. I'd love it if it was radiant, but force is kind of an upgrade, so I'll take it. The cool part is you can totally use this with armor, which will be useful in a bit.

4. Cleric 1: Oh hey it's useful now. As an Order Cleric you get proficiency with Heavy Armor, as well as Persuasion to make getting those pesky zoning ordinances in order a bit easier.

You also become a Voice of Authority, meaning that if you cast a spell targeting one or more allies, one of those allies can use their reaction to attack, because there's nothing more romantic than giving your all on the battlefield.

Speaking of, you can cast and prepare Spells now using your Wisdom. For cantrips, grab Thaumaturgy for religion funnies, and Resistance to make yourself a bit tougher than is reasonable. You also get the cantrip Hand of Radiance for a shinier punch. It's a melee range spell that deals 1d6 radiant damage if the target fails a constitution save. It's not as powerful as your punches, but it ignores armor!

You also get first level spells, and your freebies are Command and Heroism, great for when you need to build Roma from the ground up. Some other good city-building spells are Ceremony, Create or Destroy Water, and Purify Food and Drink.

5. Cleric 2: Second level clerics can Channel Divinity once per short rest. You can either use the classic Turn Undead to wig out any undead who fail a wisdom save, or you can issue Order's Demand to charm nearby creatures for a round. You can also force those creatures to drop whatever they're holding.

6. Cleric 3: Third level clerics get second level spells, like Hold Person and Zone of Truth. You can also use Continual Flame to make eternal torches, Calm Emotions to settle disputes peacefully, and Spiritual Weapon to not settle things peacefully.

7. Cleric 4: When you finally get your first Ability Score Improvement, bump up your Wisdom for a better unarmored AC, Astral Arms attacks, and spells. You really like wisdom, it's good to you.

You can also use Guidance to make yourself a little better than everyone else at ability checks.

8. Cleric 5: Fifth level clerics see their Turn Undead turn into Destroy Undead, instantly destroying undead of CR 1/2 or lower who fail their wisdom save. You also get third level spells, like Mass Healing Word and Slow. I'd also suggest Clairvoyance for a bit of omniscience, Daylight for the aesthetic, and Spirit Shroud for a bit of power building. It's fine, beating up a god needs power building, so it's in character.

9. Cleric 6: This level lets you Channel Divinity twice per rest, and you become an Embodiment of the Law, letting you cast enchantment spells as a bonus action instead of an action. You can speed things up this way Wisdom Modifier per long rest. Now you can hold someone down and slap the shit out of them in the same turn!

10. Cleric 7: Continuing the trend you've probably figured out by now, seventh level clerics get fourth level spells, like Compulsion and Locate Creature. You can also use Control Water to make your harbor more or less hospitable.

11. Cleric 8: As an eighth level order cleric, your Divine Strike lets you add psychic damage to one of your attacks each turn. Since this applies to a "weapon attack" and not a "melee weapon attack", your fists qualify. Yes, they are a melee "weapon attack", not a "melee weapon attack". Makes perfect sense.

You also get another ASI, which will let you max out your Wisdom for so many good reasons. Punching, spells, AC, they're all a bit better.

Destroy Undead also kills creatures of CR 1 or lower now.

12. Cleric 9: Ninth level clerics get fifth level spells, like Commune and Dominate Person. You can also use your Noble Phantasms on the offensive thanks to Flame Strike, or on the defensive as Mass Cure Wounds or Hallow. The former is basically a giant laser, the middle one is Cure Wounds But Multiple People, and the latter will turn an area into a great spot to build a city. As long as you aren't building a city for Celestials, Elementals, Fey, Fiends, or Undead.

13. Cleric 10: If you're tired of slapping people around with a hand of radiance, you can just use a Word of Radiance instead! It's literally the same thing as Hand of Radiance, but it uses a holy symbol instead of somatic components.

That being said you can also use Divine Intervention now, letting you call up your god (read: you) for a favor once per day. It only has a 1 in 10 chance of succeeding, but if it does the DM's the limit on what kind of help you'll get. After getting help you have to wait a week for it to recharge. You’d think you’d be willing to call in favors for you more often, but I’m not a god, so I wouldn’t know.

14. Cleric 11: Eleventh level clerics get sixth level spells, and sadly we're out of freebies. That being said, you could use Sunbeam for a reusable Per Aspera Ad Astra, or create a Heroes' Feast for a good time on the town.

Also, your Destroy Undead bumps up again to CR 2.

15. Cleric 12: This ASI will bump your Strength up, both so you can have stronger attacks when your Astral Arms are down, and so you can wear full plate armor without an issue.

16. Cleric 13: With the advent of seventh level spells, we finally get the only cleric spell in the game that actually lets you build a structure. Temple to the Gods lets you build a temple of your own design within a 120' square, and while it normally ends a day later, casting the spell in the same spot for a year makes the spell permanent. Honestly 1 building a year seems a bit slow for a city, I'd suggest just building them the old fashioned way. You can also use Divine Words to send extraplanar creatures back to where they came from, and you weaken other creatures with status effects dependent on how many hit points they have left.

17. Cleric 14: Destroy Undead kills CR 3 creatures now. Not fancy, but at least those skeletal owlbears will leave you alone. Also your Divine Strike is better now.

18. Cleric 15: Eighth level spells are always fun. You can now do stuff like Control Weather, cause an Earthquake, shed a Holy Aura to protect allies, or use a Sunburst to launch a big blob of light at enemies.

19. Cleric 16: Use your last ASI to become Tough for an extra 38 HP. The one problem with cleric; super squishy class.

20. Cleric 17: Your capstone level is surprisingly busy. Your Destroy Undead hits CR 4 creatures, and you can invoke Order's Wrath on creatures when you hit them. If you hit a creature with your Divine Strike, you can curse them until the start of your next turn. If an ally hits the cursed creature, they take another round of Divine Strike damage!

And that's not all! You also get ninth level spells! None of them particularly scream "Romulus" to me, but I mean you're a god, you can use whatever you want.

Pros:

You might only have one attack per round, but you really make them count. Each swing deals 3d8+5 damage per hit, and they deal psychic and force damage, two of the hardest types to avoid. And that's all before you get into spells to buff yourself like Spirit Shroud. It's not flashy, but it is consistent.

You've got a maxed out casting modifier and plenty of charming spells, meaning you're pretty good at controlling others.

Embodiment of the Law is huge, it lets you buff and debuff as a bonus action, freeing up your main action for direct support or combat.

Cons:

With only three monk levels, you don't have a lot of Ki to go around. You'll probably have to save all of it for your Astral Arms, as you're a lot weaker without them.

On a related note, multiclassing the way we did is also pretty awkward. The 20th level of cleric is super powerful, and if we spent two more levels as monk you could attack more often per turn and get more ki points.

Your constitution isn't great, meaning you can drop concentration easily and you're kind of squishy for a god. That's especially not good considering your main form of combat is slapping people in the face.

EVENT:  Sanguine Tenebris Conclusion

Many brave souls made an attempt to battle their way through the Circulorum Inferni. A select few were strong enough to make it all the way to Domus Tenebris to seek counsel with the Reaper. The Unwavering City of Gobethio: Capital of Railoch Because of the persistent thunderstorm overhead, much of Railoch remains an inhospitable wasteland filled to the brim with ruins and strange machines leftover from a bygone era. However, despite the tempest's best efforts, the heart of civilization still beats in the eye of its storm. Gobethio, the once abandoned city now called the motherland of Revaliir's archaeologists, stands as the last city yet to succumb to the sky's unending fury. No one is quite sure how Gobethio has lasted so long; not even the inhabitants themselves. It is one of Parvpora's greatest mysteries, especially given the city's remnant, advanced technologies. Gobethio is the only major settlement in all of Revaliir that is known for having hydraulic and electrical power. The entire city, while Adelunian in architectural style, is lined with magical conduits and aqueducts that harness power from the storms overhead and channel it into luxuries that the rest of the world can only dream about. From trams throughout the city to indoor plumbing and electrical lights, Gobethio has many comforts that no one else has been able to recreate. As for the city itself, it is quite sprawling even if more of a research outpost than a typical settlement. Some sight-seeing focuses can be found here and there, thanks to the elevated city center and many waterfalls that flow down to the boundaries. There are also trading hubs and inns scattered throughout the city's limits, but these are hardly the main focus of Gobethio's splendor. The numerous guilds and their halls that dot the landscape capture that role, especially with their tendency toward ornate design. Gobethio's residents are particularly fascinated with lights, and so they often devote a great amount of resources toward flashy buildings when they want to impress. Yet despite this shiny and bustling exterior, Gobethio does play host to a multitude of secrets. The reason for its high volume of archaeologists is because of the oddities that surround the settlement. The implementation of all of its technology, save for the production of additional lightning rods, light fixtures, and pipes, is completely lost on anyone that lives there now. What lies above ground and what has been implemented or repaired since the city was first resettled is not nearly grand enough to provide all of the creature comforts that the people have come to expect. There are vaults of machinery deep underground, guarded by traps and unspeakable monsters. The archaeologists have gotten rich off of the wonders within that they have managed to plunder, but no one is sure how far down the complex goes or whether it is smart to find out.

Before I get started I just want to remind people that we have no tangible NPC gods. You can say your character worships a deity that isn't a PC but you can't interact with them. These are our rules please respect them. We even have a place where people can practice the old faiths here on the site. See the City of Abed for the Tower of Edhit. The God Applications are coming and we will be giving instructions in December. We are giving you guys a 5-month heads up to get your activity up. There will be only 1 spot to round us out to 6 spots.

You must: 1. Be able to write 10 posts a month. 5 the first two weeks 5 the last two weeks. 2. Be an active member of the OOC boards. Remember that being a god isn't a status symbol. It's a staff position. 3. Post with more than 1 person. Meaning you can't just post with me on all my different accounts(example). 4. Have a yearly event idea. 5. Be a role-model. I also always answer my PMs from people when they get sent. I can post upwards of 60 posts a month for a good month. A bad month is 20. I also multitask with 36 other characters. Whatever the case, it should feature the character you are applying with. (250 words max) She wasn’t sure that this is what Blaine had meant by ‘finding a new hobby’. Her recent activities included being a grand champion in Torn’s arena; it kept her out of trouble. However, when she woke up after one of her victories she found herself tied up to the bed with a quite displeased Blaine at the foot of it. She was more disobedient than a child being told no. Saddling her dragon she heard about the unrest that was in the ice lands. Her blood ran hot naturally and there were plenty of nights that Blaine had thrown all of the blankets off the bed just to deal with how hot her body tended to be. It was the flame elemental in her that stirred; go figure the crazy one had the destructive powers of fire. Climbing up onto the golden dragon they were soon off. Through the thick of blizzards and giant clumps of snow she found herself wanting to be back in the desert, she wasn’t cold but she wasn’t happy here. Her eye was visibly twitched as she landed the dragon. If it was one thing that she had a gifted talent in it was using her nose. Tips Your Event and You: I think this is one of the most intimidating and hard things on the application. (I know it made me really nervous when I applied for my spot) It is absolutely alright to ask people for help with this. Personally, I would pm past deities or current deities for tips and tricks. This absolutely does not have to be an event that you will follow through with. Make it practical and within our reason of doing. To help you out a bit here is how our event system works: You can have 3 prizes, 2-3 synth drop to make the prizes, it can be site-wide, in a pre-existing area, in your own area of your making, you can choose to do a hit point event where you heal or strike down health. For example; Angela needs priests to save 75,000 crops. People post and it will raise the bar from 0 to whatever. If people make it you could have a prize or if they don't you can have a bad result. For a creature, you could do KILL THE DRAGON! 75,000 health and each post will knock its health down. You can do other things with the health bar as well. I think Rhylana did her event it was healing Rhylana. Be creative nothing is set in stone just because it says hit point/heal doesn't mean you have to do it that way. You would work with me to determine just how much health/heal would be alright for the activity on our site. Obviously, having too much or too little is a bad thing. Your Title & You: Don't make it like an enigma where we or normal members can't understand where you are going with it. I should be able to tell what your positions are by reading your name. Angela's original title was She who gifts Fertility and Holds the Cornucopia (Fertility and Earth) Also your deity can hate their title. Angela hates hers now and I did that to show that the world gave her the title, not the other way around. You can see her title now: Master Artisan of Life and Keeper of the Cornucopia. Long and she hates but gives her story. You do you: When you get to why you want to be a deity think about everything you do for Revaliir. We want people who are a part of our community, people who help out, and who are friendly and least likely to cause conflict. You should join our Discord/Skype to find out more about our community and get to know everyone. People who are staff are required or will be to be part of our chatbox/discord/skype in some way. Your Post Sample & You: Get a post sample you have on the site and grammar check it. We highly suggest making it best. You can even do an entry that hasn't been done. Anything that shows up why your character is the spot you are applying for. Remember the character is the spot not the spot, is the character. Your God Powers & You: These god powers should be for god modding outside of your temple. In your temple, you can god mod all you want. For instance: Angela's relic making I could take off and most likely will for something I can actually god mod same with her desires. It requires cooperation with other roleplayers, therefore isn't god modding. Even I make mistakes and so do the other gods. These powers can change over time as we adjust and get better at what we're doing. They should be relative to your spot. Something I could replace her relic making with is: Her Earth Magic is stronger than anyone's at any given time. Few other things: The deity position is a job. You guys will be expected to actually work. When we say you have to be active we mean it. Even in times of slow posting where we disband the quota, there is a mandatory log in time where you guys have to spend on the site. If you didn't show up for your job you would get fired, this is no different. PMing Dalanesca and myself to see how your app was, if we got it, or ANYTHING like that will be considered prying and we won't hesitate to throw it out. If for whatever reason you are worried your application didn't make it through the pm system (which is doubtful) please pm another staff member and they will check. Dalanesca and myself cannot and will not look over your apps. You don't send your future employer your application and be like "Is this what you want?" That won't work. It's not here. No favoritism. I don't know how many time I have to say this but I will say it again: I don't care who you are. I've thrown other people's applications out who I've been friends with for years. I don't believe in favoritism and neither does Dalanesca. We might hurt your feelings but understand we have our reasoning. It is by no means a betrayal in our friendship. I'm friends with everyone on the site. I'll be best friends with you all but that will not get you this spot. Your talent, dedication, and time on Revaliir will. Be careful about what titles you choose and what areas you choose. Make sure that it isn't anything that can be made out as if you are trying to take a current deity's spot. Don't apply to be: The Gifter of Fertility knowing full well that we have a goddess in that range. This has been a problem. Make sure your app is clear. Make your spot known in the application and not all over. Look over your powers and make sure that they don't overlap with other gods. If you want to know if you can you can ask that god if that's ok. (I really don't care about god powers being close to Angela's so have at it but the others might care). Don't use this application as a platform to complain about some injustice done to you. I have a paper shredder with your name on it. Don't waste ours or your own time. Do not link us to stuff in your app. We will ignore you. We were lenient last time with this stuff but this time around we will ignore it. If you want it in your app make room for it. This includes; backstory, post sample, etc etc. You wouldn't link stuff off your application for a real life job don't do it here either. Do not send us a half-filled out applications. (This has happened) Be professional. If I or a staff member catches someone intimidating members not to apply I will strike you or worse. I don't care who you are – this is not okay. Sell us your character don't just write it down and be like "Whatever". SELL IT. You want it this bad you make sure we can tell. I can tell when people don't really care so trust me it shows. Don't apply if you want to just advance your plot and act like you have nothing left to rp but be a god. Let me tell you something: We don't trust that and we don't appreciate it. What's stopping you from making god and getting bored with it? This is a spot you should plan to have long term. I've held my deity position before Revaliir and I intend on keeping it. We're in for the long haul and you should be as well. We're dedicated to serving Rev for the greater good even if we're the only ones left rping. That was the promise we the creators made ourselves when we built Rev. It will always be here. Always. Do not be intimidated: What I posted above are guidelines. As we evolve we have to set new standards for ourselves and for Revaliir. I do not want people to think: Well gosh my character is off the wall I'll never make it. On the contrary, anyone has the possibility of making it. Personally, I like off the wall ideas but I'm only 1 of the selectors for applications. I don't suggest trying to play into our likes or dislikes (People know me they know what I like) because I become hardened when I do applications. I, for the most part, am the one who delivers the bad news to friends, spouses, etc, etc. I want the best for this site and so do the other ladies. We can also tell from past posts and other things. Most importantly have fun with it. If you don't think you can handle quota and think it will ruin your experience… Don't torture yourself. I had a good friend apply and get his spot and I ended up demoting him because he lost all interest because quota ate him alive. 10 posts a month doesn't sound like a lot but when it is expected of you quota becomes a burden you have to bear.

Maryland arts, entertainment venues receive $10 million in grants

Maryland arts, entertainment venues receive $10 million in grants

ANNAPOLIS — Maryland is awarding $10 million to entertainment venues across the state that struggled during the pandemic, including the Delmarva Shorebirds, The Maryland Theatre and the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, among others.

The money will help stabilize businesses that had to shut down or drastically reduce their capacity as COVID-19 surged through Maryland over the past year.

As the state begins to emerge from the pandemic, this money will also help venues prepare for the busier fall arts season, said Nicholas Cohen, the executive director of Maryland Citizens for the Arts.

“The arts season is a little quiet in the summer. It comes back in the fall,” Cohen said. “What this does is it helps float these venues until then, to really be like, ‘Here we are, we’re back, we’re maybe close to full capacity.'”

The additional $10 million in state grants will go to more than 60 venues and organizations in Maryland. The Delmarva Shorebirds, the Baltimore Orioles’ Low-A affiliate based in Salisbury, will receive $244,716 through the grant program.

The Shorebirds took the field in May for the first time since 2019.

Several organizations in Washington County will also benefit:

Suite 710, an events venue in Hagerstown: $28,162

Washington County Playhouse: $247,039

Potomac Playmakers: $9,852

The Maryland Theatre: $238,985

Maryland Symphony Orchestra: $113,638

For the Potomac Playmakers, the money will help maintain the group’s new home, which volunteer grant writer Greg Berezuk said they moved into just before the pandemic shut everything down.

The building at 17303 W. Washington St. west of Hagerstown can hold around 130 people.

“We got in there just before COVID. It’s a wonderful facility for an audience to enjoy a live performance, and we couldn’t use it,” Berezuk said.

Fixed costs, such as the mortgage and utilities, still had to be paid even if the group was not able to put on shows, he said.

The all-volunteer Playmakers have been around for nearly 100 years, according to Berezuk.

He said the organization was able to “limp along” throughout 2020 and early 2021, with very restricted audiences allowed back during the fall and generous donations from sponsors filling in the gaps.

Berezuk said the Playmakers’ show opening on July 9, “Farce of Habit,” will be the first time the group’s new home will be open to full capacity.

Shawn Martin, who is a co-owner and co-producer at the Washington County Playhouse with wife Laura Martin, said in a Thursday email that the dinner theater at 44 N. Potomac St. in Hagerstown was closed for about eight months of 2020.

Even when the business was able to reopen in November, Martin said it was limited to 50% capacity, including staff members and hired actors.

The closure, capacity restrictions and a lack of demand caused by COVID restrictions made it impossible to cover business expenses, he said.

“The grant money will not make us whole, but will replace some of The Playhouse’s lost revenue,” Martin said.

The past 15 months were “devastating” for The Playhouse, other entertainment venues, and for Martin and his wife, who also suffered personal losses.

Martin said they have been supported by “a very large and loyal customer base and a loyal and trustworthy staff.”

The Playhouse, which opened 1985, is currently holding dinner shows primarily on Friday and Saturday evenings with select Sunday matinees.

The 2022 season, which includes musicals and summer camps, will be announced soon, according to Martin.

Suite 710 General Manager Robbie Soto said the business took a “couple of decent-sized hits” as the nightclub and attached bowling alley were both completely shut down from March to the end of June 2020

Soto said the entire staff had to be laid off.

As restrictions lifted, a new staff was hired and events slowly began to come back to the nightclub on Leitersburg Pike near the Longmeadow Shopping Center.

Soto said overall, the locally-owned business was out an estimated $300,000, so getting roughly 10% from the state was very welcome.

“Anything is better than nothing,” he said. “This is truly going to help us get caught back up.”

Soto said Suite 710 was “one of the lucky ones” to have survived the shutdown, and is working on booking events and bands to help regrow the decade-old entertainment business.

‘A lot of support’

The new $10 million in grants is on top of $30 million the state awarded earlier this year. 

The Maryland Symphony Orchestra, Maryland Theatre and Washington County Playhouse also received sizable grants during that round of awards.

Maryland Theatre Executive Director Jessica Green said the new funding was higher than she had anticipated and “much appreciated.”

“Gov. Hogan and his leadership group have shown a lot of support for our industry,” she said.

The theater, at 21 S. Potomac St. in Hagerstown, is running at 100% capacity, even hosting 35 events in May and 12 in the past week, according to Green.

She said it was exciting to have people back in the theater, and that shows were selling out “incredibly quickly.”

While fall bookings are already picking up, the summer is a notoriously slow season for live venues such as The Maryland Theatre.

“People want to be outdoors,” she said, adding that the new funding will be “put to good use.”

Grants have helped the entertainment and arts industry “weather devastating losses in programming and income,” said Steven Skerritt-Davis, deputy director of the Maryland State Arts Council.

“The sector responded with characteristic creativity and innovation, quickly pivoting to provide online content, virtual arts events, and safe in-person events and projects whenever possible,” Skerritt-Davis said.

The State Arts Council provided more than $12 million in grants during the pandemic through funding from the state and the National Endowment for the Arts.

There have been some challenges in the emergency funding processes. U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., this week joined dozens of Senate colleagues in a letter pressing the Small Business Association to distribute federal grant money to live event venues more quickly.

“It has been nearly six months since Congress passed the Save our Stages Act, nearly two months since the second launch of the program, and 51 days since the Small Business Administration began receiving applications,” the letter said. “We urge you to immediately take steps to ensure the funds are distributed to qualified applicants.”

The letter blamed bureaucratic holdups for slowing the distribution of the grant money even as businesses continue to struggle.

More than venues, though, Cohen, the Maryland Citizens for the Arts executive director, is worried about artists and performers, many of whom lost work when the pandemic caused major shutdowns.

“I think the response has been really appropriate for venues,” he said. “I think they’re on much more solid ground than we thought they would be as far as entering into the post-pandemic, but I think the key to that is how are venues going to survive if artists have had to leave the field?”

He points to the upcoming loss of federal pandemic unemployment benefits, which were an important boost for self-employed and gig workers.

Gov. Larry Hogan announced in early June that Maryland would opt out of federal unemployment programs on July 3, cutting off the extra money two months earlier than expected.

That means no additional $300 per week for people receiving traditional unemployment, and no help at all for nontraditional workers who received unemployment as an emergency measure during the pandemic.

If performers leave the industry because they can’t afford to survive, the venues that benefitted from emergency grants could see new challenges finding talent after a trying year.

“We always think of these huge venues and events,” Cohen said. “What are you coming for? You’re coming for the entertainers, the artists.”

Cohen said he hopes that the state finds new ways to support artists.

The State Arts Council has also been working to help artists support themselves. The organization put together more than 260 professional development sessions, which saw nearly 10,000 participants, Skerritt-Davis said.

MSAC is also developing an Independent Artist Network employment initiative that aims to connect artists with employers, he said.

Cohen is also hopeful some of the strategies venues used during the pandemic could stay relevant and help artists reach more people as the state reopens.

“The benefit of this is the venues have learned that they can increase access by thinking about things that are in person, but also virtual,” Cohen said. “There’s a duality here to offer people both that in-person experience but also a really robust virtual one.”

The Shapestealer: A homebrew rogue subclass

Hey! I’ve been working on a D&D 5e homebrew subclass for a while, and I wanted to share it here: The Shapestealer is a rogue subclass with the Wild Shape druid feature. The Impermanent Imposter and Shape Thief features extend the shapestealing identity, while the Viper’s Venom features focus on venoms, a natural intersection between rogues and wild animals.

In addition to sharing the actual subclass (link here), I also wanted to take a look at some hypothetical characters and situations in order to share some of the thought process that went behind it. Let’s get into it!

For our first Shapestealer, we have Holly the Lotusden Halfling (+2 Dex, +1 Wis). She’s a small, sprightly person with a strong connection to nature.

Immediately when she goes into this subclass, she gets several features which relate to each other. The most noticeable is Wild Shape: she can turn into a wolf for combat, or perhaps sneak around as a weasel. (Note that the CR progression of her Wild Shape forms is delayed compared to druids, and she only gets one use per short rest for a while.)

With Serpent’s Strike, Holly can now use her Sneak Attack with claws and fangs, so she’ll continue to strike hard while shapeshifted. With this feature, wild-shaped Holly will do damage roughly comparable to that of a Moon Druid of the same level through level 10 (though it’s worth noting that a Moon Druid can boost their damage with spells like Conjure Animals).

Let’s take a look at the other clauses in Serpent’s Strike. The clause on unarmed strikes is largely irrelevant for Holly until she gets claws through Impermanent Imposter, but it could be useful for a Tortle or Tabaxi. As for the melee spell attack clause, a glance at the druid cantrip list shows that this only applies to two spells: Primal Savagery and Thorn Whip. From a flavor perspective, both types of weapons (claws and whip) fit with Sneak Attack requirements; at later levels, Primal Savagery will scale similarly to an Arcane Trickster with one of the SCAG cantrips. I did add a modification that the roll would depend on Dex or Str to avoid the class depending too singly on Wis.

As for other druid cantrips, the most noteworthy are probably Guidance, Resistance, and Magic Stone; Shillelagh won’t be particularly useful since neither clubs nor quarterstaffs qualify for Sneak Attack. It’s worth noting that, per RAW, Magic Stone would allow Holly to use Sneak Attack with her Wis mod if she used a sling. As for Holly, she’ll be taking Guidance and Thorn Whip at level 3, followed by Primal Savagery at level 10.

At level 9, she’ll be getting access to Alter Self. Now, she’ll be able to do some fun things like impersonate a guard or sprout a tail to pickpocket someone. But I’m not here to nark on her, so let’s move on…

To Viper’s Venom: At level 13, Holly can now create doses of venom to use. Assuming she has encountered a Giant Poisonous Snake, each dose can deal 3d6 damage, and her venom can be particularly potent if she decides to hone her druidic magic: by level 13, she’ll have had 4 ASIs, which will let her max out Dex and Wis. A friend pointed out to me that, if Holly shares her vials of venom among the party, they could potentially each use the poison, adding 15d6 in the first round - I don’t think this is unreasonable at this level though, as long as Holly doesn’t mind supporting the party with her poison. Also, note that her poisons fade after 24 hours, so she won’t be able to flood the black market with these poisons.

After a few more levels, Holly’ll have reached level 17! Now, she can shapeshift into dangerous creatures like the Aeorian Absorber: assuming all her attacks hit, she’ll do an average of 97 damage each turn at level 20, beating her wizard friend Asher as they shapeshift into a Red Abishai, dealing an average of 87 each turn - though she won’t get as much health. To avoid losing concentration on Shapechange, she’s taken War Caster; incidentally, this lets her use Primal Savagery when her enemy turns their back on her as well.

Holly also gets more dangerous venoms - she still recalls her experience with Chuuls back in the day, and though it was harrowing at the time, it does mean she can paralyze her victim once per day, leaving them wide open for critical strikes. She’s also encountered Giant Coral Snakes, whose venom left her hallucinating for several minutes. And speaking of hallucinations, she certainly hasn’t forgotten the Illusion Spiders (homebrew) she encountered in the Underdark.

I think we’ve followed Holly for long enough now though, time to let her live her life. Let’s consider some other Shapestealers.

Grappling is very viable as a Shapestealer, especially when they’re Strength-based. Rogues in general can get double proficiency in Athletics, but the Shapestealer in particular has some noteworthy features. Tortles make great Shapestealer grapplers; Firbolgs are another option, and they fit the druid flavor particularly well.

For a Tortle Shapestealer, their natural AC 17 armor will come in handy. Most notably though, their claws allow them to use Serpent’s Strike and deal Sneak Attack damage when using unarmed strikes. Combined with a feat like Tavern Brawler, this lets them spend a turn to grapple without forgoing Sneak Attack damage. Meanwhile, a Firbolg can do the same when they get Natural Weapons through Impermanent Imposter at level 9.

Additionally, any Shapestealer can potentially grapple while shapeshifted. RAW doesn’t support this well unfortunately, but with some DM caveats (like letting the grapple replace a single attack in Multiattack, or letting natural weapons be used with Tavern Brawler) or a homebrew feat, certain beasts can be excellent grapplers.

It’s also worth noting that their shapeshifting nature gives Shapestealers the ability to become larger and grapple larger enemies: at level 10, they can Wild Shape into a large brown bear and grapple huge creatures, and depending on their travels, they can Shapechange into huge giants at level 17 and grapple gargantuan creatures.

One more note: for races with Powerful Build, they can carry a huge 80 lb scimitar that seems clearly too large for them… until they Shapechange into a giant and start swinging. Beyond the amusement value / flavor, it also means they can wield magical weapons they somehow acquire from larger enemies.

What are some other possibilities for Shapestealers?

With some investment in Charisma, they can take advantage of Impermanent Imposter and make a particularly deceptive face for the party. With Shape Thief, their deception is no longer bound to medium humanoids. And finally, they can take the Actor feat to further specialize in this.

If they spend enough of their time shapeshifted, they could possibly choose to rely primarily on Magic Stone (or perhaps a level 1 dip in Hexblade) and invest more in mental stats.

If they want to invest in their defense, they can take a 2 level dip in Bladesinger to add their Int mod to their AC, which applies to their Wild Shape forms per RAW. It’ll also help them concentrate on Shapechange once they get that feature.

With some UA, they can take a 3 level dip to become an Armorer. With that subclass, depending on your reading of it, you could enchant your plate armor to shapeshift with you - so you can rampage as a magically armored bear :D

As alluded to earlier with Holly and Asher, the CR limitation on Shape Thief doesn’t let the Shapestealer deal significantly more damage than Shapechange already does for wizards and druids (and the Aeorian Absorber is on the high end for damage); combined with lower HP and a lower bonus to hit as well as the inherent restriction from various forms, I think it’s balanced overall.

There are a couple creatures in particular though that merit mentioning due to their synergy with rogues, in particular Sneak Attack:

The Hydra can make an opportunity attack for each head it has; since each one presumably takes place on a separate turn, they can apply Sneak Attack damage several times per round. Notably though, hydras are huge; through Serpent’s Strike, they can only deal Sneak Attack damage to huge or gargantuan enemies. If they get 8 heads and are surrounded by 8 huge enemies who all decide to flee, the Shapestealer could do a lot of damage… but it’s a specific and dangerous enough situation that it seems fine to me. (A reduced-threat Marilith would be interesting to consider though...)

The Shoosuva has consistent access to paralysis and can use Serpent’s Strike with their attacks. Consistent Sneak Attack crits is pretty scary. I’m not sure if this is too strong, but I figured it was worth mentioning.

The Orthon has great weapons, assuming you manage to steal them and avoid its Explosive Retribution. Technically, anyone with access to Enlarge/Reduce and the correct weapon proficiencies can use them, but the Shapestealer in particular can make good use of the Orthon’s Invisibility Field as well.

So yeah, that’s the Shapestealer! To summarize:

The Shapestealer is a rogue subclass with druid magic (notably Wild Shape).

They can make good use of their shapestealing to do rogue things (stealth and deception); meanwhile, it doesn’t infringe on the supportive capabilities of druids too much, as they don’t get access to their spells beyond cantrips.

Their damage in Wild Shape forms plus Sneak Attack scales similarly to Moon Druids up to level 10, and their Primal Savagery scales similarly to an Arcane Trickster’s Booming Blade.

Simply put, if you wait to try to get the things you need until the last minute, you’re probably not going to get them.

The DHS suggests having a 2 week supply of food and water. I personally suggest having 4 weeks of food and water stored.

I suggest starting by boosting your immune system boosting medicines because our immune system is still our best way of beating a disease. Cough suppressants can help limit the spread of and disease but I prefer expectorants since they thin mucus and can help you clear your respiratory system when mucus starts to build up.

Most diseases are going to be accompanied by a fever. Tylenol and NSAIDs will help reduce your fever and get rid of any body aches you may have.

The World Health Organization has been saying that we need to increase our focus on global pandemic for years. As I’m writing this, COVID-19 is still spreading across the world and has just started to spread in the U.S. among people with no travel history that would expose them…community transmission. I’m going to say the chances are very high!

Even if COVID-19 dies off and never really becomes a massive disaster, there’s always the next disease that’s coming. Be prepared and get stuck in the mentality that nothing will ever happen to you.

How long would a pandemic last?

A pandemic isn’t going to just be one wave of the disease and then it’s gone. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety says that it will take 3 months for a disease to spread to the pandemic level with modern means of travel.

They also say to be on the lookout for 2 or 3 rounds of the disease and for the entire pandemic to last between 12 and 18 months.

Prepare for Services to be Unavailable

During a true pandemic, many services that you’re used to will probably be discontinued, at least temporarily. Banks, stores, post offices, utility companies, and even hospitals may all shut their doors.

Medical facilities will probably try to stay open for as long as they can and the government will likely try to force local utilities (like electricity and water) to stay up for as long as they can as well.

Even if medical facilities are open, they’re going to be packed full of people that are contagious. Think carefully before you head to the hospital and be sure that you can’t treat yourself at home.

ATMs and gas stations will probably be out of money and gas. Have some emergency cash on hand and some extra gas in the garage. I don’t think the gas will be gone because of increased demand, but gas probably won’t be getting delivered.

Once the Pandemic Starts

Once everything really kicks off you need to do what you can to stay healthy.

Avoid interacting with people who are sick.

When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.

Wash your hands often.

Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth.

Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat healthy food.
