Continuation of this. Instigated by this.
The first thing he noticed was how....suddenly bright everything was. Having last remembered nothing but darkness... Darkness and fear. But wherever he was...it felt like home. At least partially. A little incomplete as there wasn’t the warmth of companionship to make it truly home.
But Prompto was no longer in pain, wasn’t harmed by the clear daylight that this place was giving off. A true smile crossed his face...even as tears streaked down his cheeks.
All of it was finally clicking in. He’d died. But he had died himself, and the blond could only wish that the letter he’d left Cor would console the man enough to get through the grief of killing him. Of giving him mercy.
Walking around the area, he noted that it looked like Insomnia...before the fall. Is fingers itching instinctively, wishing he had his camera to take as many photos as he could. But, sure that he could find a way to later, he continued his walk.
There were people, ones he didn’t know, but he was sure that these were probably...people who’d passed during Insomnias’ fall. The ones who hadn’t turned into daemons and lingered still within the true ruins of the city. It was...comforting to see other people. Glad that it wasn’t such an empty void.
Until his feet led him to the Citadel.
Of course he’d always be led straight back here... Where his heart lay. With no real reason to not allow commoners into the royal residence, he stepped forward. Not that his Crownsguard uniform didn’t give him enough permission. But something was pulling him forward. Drawing him up the stairs as he explored further.
It wasn’t til his feet were led to an inner garden...that his eyes fell upon a familiar face...and one he’d merely seen in the media.
Regis, but looking...far more like his actual age, throwing Prompto for a bit of a loop as he stared at what seemed to be such a sprightly old man. And with him...was Lunafreya.
Kind eyes fell on him, though there was sorrow behind them.
Luna moving to apologize that...he had come to them so early. Asking if the others’ had met the same fate. This only caused the blond to shake his head with a bitter smile.
No...he’d fallen to the scourge...well before his actual time.
It was hard...watching the princess look so upset over something he was sure...probably wouldn’t have been a big deal. But was surprised when he felt arms around him...hugging him. Making him feel far more welcome than he’d expected. A gentle, heavy hand on his shoulder as the two welcomed them to home...of a sort.
Regis looked down at the boy...silent for a moment before thanking him... The actual former King....thanking him for sticking by his son. For helping Noctis. It was nearly too much for the ex gunner to take in. Eyes welling up as he gave a firm nod.
“Yeah...well, you know. Someone had to! Noct would be hopeless without me, sir.”
Their time spent waiting was filled with peaceful silence, exploring and getting to know one another. Without the worries of titles, or places of rank. Just three people...patiently waiting for their loved ones to join them.
Noctis @tribulatio-regis / @noctiscrosses
Admittedly, he’d expected Noctis to take longer to get here... Only feeling like a few weeks time for himself, but when he did arrive, he nearly busted a gut laughing.
Never...in all his days alive nor dead, did he expect to see facial hair on his best friend.
What could have been a touching moment...immediately ruined by a fit of giggles as the youthful blond grinned at the last King of Lucis. A tender look in his eyes as he offered open arms.
Prompto nearly felt like he was bulldozed over, when the weight of the older Noctis hit his chest. A wet laugh leaving him as he wrapped his arms around the other and both kept each other in a firm hug.
“I missed you. I didn’t even get a chance to watch over you and your battle with that creepy asshole.” The blond joked, resting his forehead against Noctis’ shoulder. “Please tell me you didn’t get your ass beat.”
“Hey! Have a little more faith in your King, you brat. At least I’m not the one that still looks like they’re 20!”
“Says the old man!” A snort left Promptos’ lips before he could even stop it. “That’s because I am 20, you ass!”
No actual heat was in his voice as he gave his friend a playful shove.
All the playful laughter and amusement quickly died down as the took a moment to look over each other. A look of sorrow crossing over the former kings’ face.
“Prom, I’m so-”
“Don’t be.” Prompto was quick to cut him off. Smile on his face, no matter how much thinking back on his death hurt. “There was nothing anyone coulda done, Noct. That stuff just happens, you know? I’m...actually kinda glad you didn’t have to see me like that.”
He was honest, grabbing his friends hand and giving it a tug.
“Now come on! You got a princess and a dad to go greet!!”
Ignis and Gladiolus @stcnd-by-me
Once again...he’d expected... Well, he wasn’t sure what he was expecting. Other than more time to pass before the others’ joined them. Noctis had spent most of the time figuring out how to alter his appearance now, the afterlife giving so many abilities that he was sure the former king was going to take too much enjoyment out of.
They’d been out at one of the havens. Not too far outside Insomnia since they didn’t feel brave enough yet. Not enough to see how far this afterlife really spanned. Perhaps another day. At least that was what the four of them had promised.
Regis and Noctis were sitting down and fishing just outside the city gates, Lunafreya having taken a book with her to read to pass the time. Amusement clear as day on her face as she watched her husband talk to his dad about fishing of all things.
Prompto, on the other hand, had stayed behind to go exploring near the haven. Safe as far as they knew, not knowing the limits of this afterlife they’d been placed in. But there had been no sightings of monsters, so he figured it was safe enough.
He’d gotten just on the outskirts Hammerheads’ parking lot, not realizing he’d trekked that far ahead before he heard bickering.
“I’m telling you, I don’t care what kind of afterlife this is. The price of this Ebony is still outrageous.”
“It’s not like we’re exactly hurting for cash, Ig. Everyone knows who we are anyway, not like that can’t give us some leeway.”
His footsteps picked up as he nearly barged into the pit stops’ store. He knew those voices anywhere.
“Iggy?! Gladio?!” Standing at the door, he quickly looked about the small store...and sure as the day itself. There stood the older men...surprised enough to see them as they had been the last he saw them.
Though Ignis’ returned sight didn’t go unnoticed.
“Ah, punctual as usual, I see. It’s good to see you too...Prompto.” Ignis’ usual air about him held a kindness he’d...not been too familiar with. A tone of voice he’d only heard when he’d been slowly dying in the hospital. Like the man was sad...but only that he was sad that it took this long to finally see the boy. A smile on his face, enough reassurance that the former adviser was glad to finally be back with the ray of sunshine.
Gladiolus’ response...on the other hand, had been to scoop the poor boy up into what felt like a soul crushing hug. Prompto wheezing as he scrambled to break free.
“Sh--shit! I’m h-happy to see you too big guy, but don’t try to double kill me!” The hug easing up before he was placed down next to the two older men, a smile gracing everyones’ face.
“Can you blame me?! The last time we saw you---” Gladiolus broke off for a moment to recollect himself. “The last time we saw you, it was a nightmare. A nightmare we couldn’t even save you from.”
Promptos’ smile softened as he nudged the muscled male a little. Encouraging him to cheer up.
“Hey, all water under the bridge! We’re all back together now, and that’s all that matters!”
“I trust that includes, His Majesty?”
“Both actually! And Lunafreya.” The blond chirped, waving them out of the store in order to lead them back to the haven. Only stopping to protest when he felt two different hands on his head and a rough ruffle of his hair.
“It’s good to see you like this, Prompt.”
“It’s good to see you guys too.”
Cor @leorugiet
Prompto was on his own this time, when he finally met up with the last person he was missing the most. This one...taking considerably longer to join them, and while it made him happy to know that the older male was leading such a full life... Part of him selfishly missed him and wanted him here.
But he waited patiently, keeping his time with everyone. Sharing the times he didn’t get to during their travels and certainly not during his time on his deathbed. Only to have his eyes always at his back. Looking for a certain brunet every time he stopped to check the horizon.
For once, he hadn’t been the first one to find Cor when he’d finally joined the others.
He’d been quietly waiting around in the garden area before he heard giddy voices, followed by a lower...more annoyed voice.
Picking up on the sound, his head immediately shot over to the door and watched it with baited breath.
Prompto knew that voice. Would have known it anywhere.
The door had opened, showing an aged Cor as he stepped in and laid his eyes on the blond.
A warm smile was brought to his face before he stood up, hardly hesitating before he bolted for the older man. Immediately throwing himself at him for a hug. Knowing that it was a poor choice in action, with how little the other disliked being touched....
But he was finally here. Cor was finally here and he could finally make up all that time....all the things he’d done for him before he’d passed.
Prompto kept Cor locked into a hug before he was surprised to find it returned. Not expecting the arms to hold him like the other was afraid he was going to disappear.
“You’re finally here... You sure know how to keep us kids waiting...” He whispered, the photographers head resting on the much broader one. “Thank you....for doing what you did.”
The blond felt the arms around him tighten more and he gave Cor a gentle pat against his back. Soothing him as gentle as he could.
“Thank you for letting me die as me...and I’m sorry you had to do it---”
“Don’t. It’s fine, you don’t have to apologize for anything.”
His gruff voice cutting Prompto off before his gentle chuckle broke the silence.
“I got ya, big guy...”
“Welcome home.”
