daily ask pt. 20
Rapidly running out of ideas for GO, so asking a Marvel related question:
Are there any couples you don't like within the MCU? And are there any couples you headcanon?
i haven't rly been in the loop on mcu stuff since endgame tbh but yeah i have some opinions and the first is that pretty much every canon mcu ship is very. eh
some are tolerable, like pepper nd tony and peter and mj, but brutasha was ?????? so bad. like it could have been okay maybe if handled differently? but it just kinda came out of nowhere for the hot mess that was age of ultron (which i actually dislike less than the majority of the fandom, and think is better than iw and endgame at least) and disappeared lmao. i don't have anything against scott/hope BUT the first ant-man movie was looking so very beautifully no romantic subplot until the last moment (or maybe im just stupid) and then they just had to kiss in like the last scene?? like why. rmmbr that pissimg me off at the time. steve and shanon also feels not great and ofc him going back to peggy in endgame made me hate everything tbh
ok those are the ones i actively dislike for reasons now ships i like. easy. stucky. idk if ppl still use that word but they were def my hashtag otp back in the day . i was very unwell abt these two and prbly still could b reactivated like a sleeper agent by the right fanfic (my fav is prbly middle town, it's so wel written). i was also into clintasha back in the avengers 2012 days, still think they r qt . sambucky is also hilarious

Tell me abt ur correct mcu timeline
this is completely divorced from marvel comics since the mcu is a totally different continuity. it's my house now <3
Captain America: the First Avenger
1941 - Steve gets his powers (age 23) 1942 - the Howling Commandos are organized August 1945 - Bucky "dies" (age 28) approx. a week later - Steve crash-lands in the ocean (age 27) September 1945 - WWII ends
Captain Marvel
Nick Fury doesn't lose his eye to a fucking CAT. instead, he loses it to someone close to him who he once trusted before losing his eye in a climatic battle that forever changed how he deals with people. because in THIS house I don't fucking make my badass characters into a fucking JOKE (forever pissed at how they built Nick Fury up as this badass amazing character who is implied to have Been Through Shit to make him as slow to trust as he is today and then when the time came to shed some light on his story they....turned all that into a joke with the fucking cat. biting tearing maiming.)
Iron Man 1+2
Tony Stark does his thing and is really really obnoxious about it. idk it's been a while since I've seen these but that's pretty much all he does so w/e
Thor
chef's kiss. you stay exactly the way you are, thor 1
The Avengers
Phil Coulson being revealed to not be dead near the end, and thus leading into Agents of SHIELD would be kinda cool narratively, but it's not a must because Coulson's reveal in AoS is pretty badass as it is.
Thor: the Dark World
another chef's kiss
Iron Man 3
Tony Stark moves on from Iron Man and destroys all his suits, and actually sticks to the decision. he only appears in future movies as tech/support, if that. sincerely, someone who can barely stand Tony as he is and fucking hates it when he completely takes over someone else's movie :/
Avengers: Age of Ultron
Ultron is still the main antagonist because it's a fascinating concept, and the rest of the movie largely happens as written except Quicksilver doesn't get killed off because let's be real that was CHEAP. if you're gonna kill off your characters at LEAST do it in a believable way smh.
Captain America: Civil War
this is . a fun one. Tony isn't in the movie at all (<3), and there is very little conflict/screentime with the Avengers because that's a stupid ass thing to do in a Captain America movie. the plot centers around Steve and Co. evading global authorities while trying to prove Bucky's innocence in the UN bombing. no stupid Tony-centric plots and petty arguments in my good Christian Captain America movie
Black Widow
idk I wanted to see her early days in SHIELD. I wanna see how she met Clint and how two very very mistrustful people got to be so close. to be clear I don't ship them and I love their friendship so ideally this is for the aros and the aces <3333
Black Panther
chef's kiss. couldn't make it better if I tried <333
Spiderman: Homecoming
TONY!!! ISN'T!!!! IN IT!!!! <3!!!!!!! instead, the story focuses on Peter Parker (already operating as Spiderman since we've seen Uncle Ben die approx. 3700000 times) trying to become a true hero blah blah you get the idea
Thor: Ragnarok
CHEF'S!!!! KISS!!!!! from this point on, he never fights with a hammer (or hammer equivalent) because the entire POINT of the movie was to establish that HE DOESN'T NEED ONE !
Avengers: Infinity War/Endgame
hooooo boy. I can't even think of a way to fix this one. it's just not there anymore <3333333 and I also can't fix anything that comes after these movies just because it's all so convoluted and fucked up at this point it's beyond repair. but there's definitely no Dr. Hulk, and Steve doesn't go back to live with Peggy because fuck that bullshit
tldr: I don't fucking get rid of character development every time it happens <3333 I let the characters change and grow naturally because I know how to tell a fucking story

DGMW, a lot of the comic book media bros still act like endgame is the best thing ever, but when ppl act like endgame was the "downfall" of marvel bc it's so bad (it is) it makes me wish there were "historians" of sorts to set the record bc sm of what made endgame the way it was started in 2015 after all the executive restructuring in marvel and Feige getting so more and more control over all of the brand/franchise
Like the very concept of characters and individual story arcs being respected became secondary to the "big" crossover cameofest Events just to create hype bubbles at the expense of storytelling
And that's why I hate when the comic book media bros whine about Phase 4/post-EG "downfall" and say things like "EG was the last good movie except for NWH/GOTG/every movie with a white man lead" bc all of the problems they claim to care abt started in Phase 3... They're just willing to "notice" now that there's a handful of non-whiteman led projects now... lol
And dare I say some (emphasis on some) post-EG projects actually do tell better stories and arcs with more authentic characters (that haven't been grinded to dust by the crossoverfest machine yet) compared to all of the Phase 3 movies that ppl hype up?
Yet those projects get called bad or the worst marvel movie by the same comic dudebros who log on and claim that people lack "media literacy" and "don't understand character arcs" when someone outside of CB fandoms doesn't lie and pretend that the Russo bros and Feige's Endgame didn't mangle characters in their incoherent crossover event
i’m gonna be real i haven’t watched anything since endgame and i’m not readin all that but i’m happy for you or sorry that happened

Saw a post on twitter talkin abt how reviews 4 detective pikachu keep saying it sucks cause u have to have knowledge of the pokemon franchise for it (which is stupid, but thats another can of worms) and comparing it to avengers endgame's 20 movie homework assignment - which isnt hyperbole. And i was thinking of all the folks who are like 'stop crying why dont you understand how sequels work'. And it got me musing on what marvel and disney have done here to basically guarantee that they not only garner huge profits from their new movies, but that they continue to garner huge profits on basically every mcu movie theyve made since 2008.
Like. MCU movies whether i like it or not are a huge part of being... social, basically. I dont give a shit about them, but i also have almost no friends and dont give a shit about communicating with people in a general sense. But every time a new marvel movie comes out, its fuckin all people talk about. It permeates everything. Ive seen the societal pressure to continue seeing these movies even if you dont care about them, *just* so you can be part of everyday conversation for a good few months. People RUN to see the movie as soon as humanly possible because people want to avoid spoilers so desperately they completely isolate themselves from the world. And, yeah, you can apply this to literally any movie in a popular franchise or any standalone heavy hitter - what sets mcu apart is that 20 movie homework assignment.
In looking up what movies are essential to watch before endgame, the absolute shortest list i could find was 8, and that was like, bare bones. Watching those 8 movies, if youre a newbie to the franchise, you still wouldnt know who the fuck most of the heroes popping up are or why the fuck theyre there. (I have general knowledge of marvel, but i never saw ant man, so even being marginally aware of the hero when i saw civil war and he popped up, i was like 'what the fuck, whyd they kidnap celebrity paul rudd?') In order to fully understand who everybody is, i'd say you have to watch at least the first movie of every individual hero's movie line. In order to have perspective on the inner workings of characters and what has happened to them so you can see where theyre coming from, youd have to watch *all* of it. Which, i mean, if people wanna do that, u do u booboo. Some people are in love with this shit. Some people wanna be able to, like, be part of greater society and talk to their friends. I get it. Youre not gonna be able to keep up with conversation as well if you dont know who a third of the characters even are. If your friends are big fans, you better be able to talk shop, too.
What im musing on is that, like, theres no way this wasnt fully intentional. Theres no way that disney and marvel arent aware of the social influence their franchise has, and no way they werent aware of how it would be from the beginning, just by watching social trends when huge movies come out. I mean, thats what your marketing team is there for, yknow. Its literally their job. The entire mcu line was carefully crafted to make sure youre not just giving money to their new movies, but to all their old movies, since its required watching and youll experience some level of social isolation if you dont. Yeah, other franchises have done this stuff too, having multiple sequals or breaking up their sequals into several parts to make more money. But - and i might be wrong, if theres another quite this huge, im just not remembering - not to the extent the mcu has. Not *20 fucking movies*, spanning several different storylines with their own sequels that are only intermingled juuuuust enough to be important. Imagine if all the disney princess movies were intermingled. Imagine if, in order to watch moana, you had to watch everything from, oh, little mermaid on, to understand whats going on.
And then, like the big bright maraschino cherry on top, if you complain about it being inaccessible, you get social backlash. Youre socially isolated and out of the popular loop if you dont see it, but if you take issue with everything you have to do just to get there, youre chastised by your peers. The only way to win is to give marvel lots of money, and thats entirely intentional on their part.
And yes, i know, ppl can pirate movies or read summaries. I am one of the ppl who basically live by doing that, so ofc i know. But i think we can all agree that reading summaries is absolutely not the same as seeing the movie first hand, leaves out a ton of details, and gives you none of the emotional impact of the situation, so youre still socially stunted - and theres absolutely a societal trend to some people to just experience the whole thing because it just feels right. Basically as a ritual. (See: people rewatching the LOTR trilogy before going to see the hobbit movies, just to hype themselves up and turn seeing the movie into a much bigger personal event, as ONE example among mmmaaannnyyy.) And pirating? Tons of folks are vehemently morally opposed to that. (I am not, but like, doesnt mean there aint a significant number of ppl who are.)
Its clever. And also kinda horrifying, in a 'capitalism is highly manipulative and insidious' kinda way.
Im 100% sure this musing is not new or groundbreaking in any way, shape, or form, and that tons of people have been well aware of it for ages. Its just interesting to think about.

Avengers Marathon Ramble
(made this as a Twitter thread on May 15th but I’m moving it here!)
might add more in the future since this is me geeking out over production stuff
Doing an Avengers marathon rn aaaaaaaa I’m so excited abt everything like—
the LIGHTING
the DETAILS
the SOUND DESIGN
the CONTINUITY
the CINEMATOGRAPHY
HOW EVERYTHING IS SHOT
THE CAMERA PANS
ILLUSION/TRICKS
the COLOURSSSSSS
Colour Palettes
Infinity War & Thor Ragnarok have the most colourful palette that grabs your eye and matches the fact it’s a lot of/all our characters converging
Endgame is literally every character so there’s a lot of colour on screen in genereal, but IW is more of themed colours ig?? unsure how to explain it, but there’s a difference
People have probably said this already but Civil War has more muted tones to fit the theme of covering stuff from the past/going back in the timeline
SFX stuff I liked
Red Skull explains the soul stone’s price and says it has “a certain WISDOM” which echoes on wisdom v faintly in the background
characters continuing dialogue off-screen!! related to continuity which I love
THEME SONGS!! That tell you who’s coming if u know their theme :))))
FONTS!
Civil War: BIG white font that fills the screen! Nice in-your-face modern thing which contrasts to the back-in-time plot
Infinity War: IW font is like,,, medieval? gothic? I forget the word lol but it fits the unnerving vibe
Captain Marvel: futuristic animations + SPACE FONT matching the space/future theme
pretty sure Gaurdians of the Galaxy has some similar to CM but we skipped over those movies this time around
