TEXTO ÁUREO “Sabe, porém, isto: que nos últimos dias sobrevirão tempos trabalhosos.” (2 Tm 3.1)

The Ableism Inherent in the Sysmed
So we've been seeing this recurrent claim pop up, that endogenic systems are ableist because of their claims that they experience plurality without being formed from trauma. Aaaaand it's got us annoyed to the point where we decided to write an essay about this. Mox has helped me (Faye) come up with a lot of this, so credit to her.
Our claim
Our claim is that accusing endogenic systems of being ableist by their mere existence is in fact ableism (or at the very least, fails as an argument and probably utilizes ableist assumptions). To make that claim, I'm going to need a straw man. Foxy, do you care to take the role?
I'm at the very least a stick man. Possibly brick. -Foxy
That a yes?
Duh. We rehearsed this whole bit all day at work.
SHHHH, you aren't supposed to tell them this isn't off the cuff and like, edited and stuff.
*rolls eyes*
Anyways, let's get started.
Claiming to have a disorder
Endogenic "systems" are ableist because they're pretending to have a disorder. A serious disorder that only results from trauma.
So this is an interesting one. You see, most endogenic systems we've come across don't generally claim to have DID/OSDD. But of course, that part is generally speaking ignored and the accusation is reiterated.
Here's the thing that takes some nuance though: even if DID/OSDD is caused exclusively by trauma, that doesn't stop an endogenic system from having it. We will for the moment ignore that dissociative disorders are placed next to the trauma disorders to reflect their close relationship (American Psychiatric Association, 2013, p. 291), and that none of them have trauma requirements (American Psychiatric Association, 2013, p. 291-307). I'm willing to believe that the kind of dissociation required to achieve memory barriers found in DID is caused by trauma, and that OSDD-1 (without amnesia) may likewise require trauma to cause distress (indeed, our collective distress is a byproduct of our different trauma responses).
But they have a trauma disorder. How are they supposed to have a trauma disorder without trauma?!?!
Endogenic systems claim that they were not formed from trauma. They do not however claim that they have no trauma. It actually seems pretty reasonable to expect a brain that is running a system of consciousnesses will react to overwhelming circumstances by increasing the severity of the pre-existing separations. When systems go through traumatic events, it makes sense that they would use the tools available to protect themselves. If you have a system prior to the trauma, then boom, you're endogenic (if you choose to label that way).
So endogenic systems have all rights to claim the disorder. Or they're not claiming a disorder at all. It's not ableist to claim an experience (plurality) that's also experienced by those with a disorder (DID/OSDD). No one is ableist for stimming when that's included in the diagnostic criteria of autism.
The Only Real(TM)(C)(R) Systems are DID/OSDD
No, the only way to be a system is if you have DID/OSDD though.
Why is that though? Criterion C of DID (American Psychiatric Association, 2013, p. 292), the first sentence of OSDD (American Psychiatric Association, 2013, p. 306), and the last essential feature of DID in the ICD-11 (ICD-11 for Mortality and Morbidity Statistics, 2022, "Essential Features" section) are all "distress" criteria. I.e. the thing that takes all symptoms together and makes it a disorder. Hell, the ICD-11 has a section that clearly states "The presence of two or more distinct personality states does not always indicate the presence of a mental disorder." (ICD-11 for Mortality and Morbidity Statistics, 2022, "Boundaries with Normality (Threshold)" section). Credit to The Lunastus Collective for finding and sharing the ICD-11 info (The Lunastus Collective, 2022).
Seriously, DID/OSDD are the only ways to be a system. Believing that you have multiple people in your head isn't normal!
There it is. That's the underlying assumption I think a lot of people seem to be making.
I'm so good at being a straw man. ;)
Eh, you and I both know that we've heard people make this claim. That you can't have a healthy mind (or at the very least a 'normal' one) if it's got a few people in it. Typically integration of the personality occurs in childhood, and infants begin the world with separate emotional self-states (Nijenhuis et al., 2004, "A Developmental Perspective of Dissociation" section). And so any deviance from typicality is a disorder yes?
Yeah, children don't get the normal integration of personality because of trauma.
You're using that word 'normal' though. That's a bit of a problem. You see, it's pretty ableist to label anything outside of the bounds of "normal" as a disorder. Hell, your beliefs (the actual Foxy, not the strawman bit she's doing) about how you got into our head would be considered delusions by most sysmeds, but tweak it ever so slightly to match up with a wider culturally accepted "normal" belief, and all of a sudden it's simply your spiritual beliefs right?
Hell, it reminds me of the discourse around trans people. We're considered to be "mentally ill" because our gender doesn't match up with society's expectations based upon our apparent biology. Worse still for us non-binary folk, as we're further talking about something weird when we talk about gender (and of course, further afield are xenogenders, of which none of us are, but fully support). Every step away from "normal" can be labeled more and more of a "mental illness" when those identities are simply a matter of self image. Of internal experience. Of qualia.
If any of those were to be termed as mental illnesses, it's pretty easy to see how ableist that is (as well as transphobic). Calling something a mental disorder just because it's different from the norm is ableist.
But DID/OSDD are disorders.
And we're going to go in a circle if your next point is that DID/OSDD are the only kinds of systems. And again, most endogenic systems we've met have specifically clarified that they do not have DID or OSDD. They merely claim that they are plural without having been formed from trauma.
They Just Don't Know their Trauma
Listen, I'm not even against endos. I just think that they're spreading misinformation by claiming not to have been formed from trauma. Just because they don't know their trauma, doesn't mean that they can go around claiming to be a system without trauma.
Again, that's ignoring the fact that many endogenic systems do know their own trauma. But now you're saying that a system (that you believe has a mental disorder) is not allowed to express their own life experiences?
Well yeah. They have a disorder that hides trauma. Therefore they wouldn't know if they had trauma because the disorder is doing its job.
So, because you think that a person is mentally ill, they can't be an expert on their own life? You do realize that's ableist as fuck right? To take away the autonomy of a person(s) in their ability to self relate and advocate because you hold that they have a mental disorder? That's how a metric fuck ton of psychiatric abuse occurs.
Furthermore this is an abuse tactic known as 'gaslighting' if you didn't know (Logsdon-Breakstone, 2012). You're telling people with (what you think is) a mental health disability that they can't be trusted with their own lives; that they can't possibly know themselves better than you.
And of course this is all ignoring the fact that there are systems with zero signs of trauma. It doesn't make a great deal of sense to tell a system who doesn't lose time, have amnesia, lose control of their thoughts or actions, have flashbacks, get hypervigilant, or have an exaggerated fear response, that in spite of none of those signs, they must secretly have trauma.
They're Just Faking It
Well if they don't have all of those symptoms, then they're just faking it.
And now we get to my favorite bit of ableism. This can go one of two ways honestly. First and foremost, people have been denied healthcare, resources, and even simple safety because others claim that their experiences are a lie; that they don't "look disabled" enough. Know that whatever outward sign of plurality you hold up as a requirement for plurality, you will exclude those with the disorder, including those that are straight up diagnosed (not to say that self-diagnosis is in any way shape or form invalid or lesser, but if an officially certified as capable of certifying someone officially "multiple" did it, then that should be at least enough for you).
Hey hey hey, I'm not saying that they're lying. I'm saying that they're mistaking their symptoms for plurality.
Aaaand that's' the other way.
Almost like we rehearsed this conversation before typing it up. ;)
Shhhh. Anyways, yeah, that's the other way it seems to be going. More gaslighting. If you're attempting to tell an ostensibly crazy person that they are mistaken about their experiences, you're doing textbook gaslighting. Which is ableist as fuck.
Conclusion
Overall, I think that anyone who wants to accuse endogenic systems of being ableist needs to stop for a moment and really think about what they're doing. Are they misunderstanding what the endogenic system is trying to communicate? Are they presuming that plurality itself is a disorder, and if so why? Are they just trying to gaslight people? Do they presume that atypical minds are incapable of deciding for themselves how they view themselves?
I may have stretched the use of ableism here, but I think it's still applicable. The attacks we've seen on endogenic systems so often seem to be built upon either the idea that plurality itself is a mental disorder, because having more than one person in one's head is "crazy." Or they are gaslighty attempts at weaponizing mental health disabilities against someone. In either case, fucking not cool.

Buck & Eddie and the significance of forgiveness
Okay, so while I have the single brain cell, I have to share more hiatus rewatch analytical thoughts. The hill I have chosen to die on today is: forgiveness and unconditionally being enough for the right person, as exemplified through the lawsuit arc and its subsequent events. And yes, I will be comparing this to a hamburger, so just deal with that.
Sticking with the hamburger analogy, the bottom bun is the moment in 306 when Eddie and Buck have their moment of reconciliation. Eddie forgives Buck for everything and they hug it out. With nothing more to compare it to, this scene just gives you the warm butterflies of two really close people working things out, which we love to see.
HOWEVER, when you add in all the hamburger fillings, things get a little deeper. May I present the moment in 308, when Eddie and Bobby have their heart to heart in the firehouse. Eddie's whole deal is feeling that he inherently was not enough for Shannon, that even though he forgave her for everything and was ready to give all of himself to her again, he would never be enough, and she was always going to leave him. Which really highlights how much of a big deal him forgiving Buck was in the previous scene. Buck is already constantly paralleled to Shannon, so we have that to work off of, and here he has assumed a place in Eddie's life where, if removed, the loss Eddie would feel would be significant and life up-ending. To think that Eddie's hurt stemmed from the fact that he thought he again wasn't inherently enough for someone important to him to stick around (after giving his whole ass self to Buck, including trust in his son) and we get this vulnerability between him and Bobby after the context of him forgiving Buck in 306? WOW.
NOW, we cap it off with the top bun, or what will go down in the archives of fandom history as The Kitchen Scene(TM). Leading up to this moment, we now understand Eddie's biggest fear is doing everything right but he himself not being worthy or enough for the people he cares most about in his life. We also know, as shown in the Kitchen Scene(TM), that Buck has really been spending time considering the impact of his actions on both Eddie and Christopher and how much he compromised his spot in that family and that family's well-being. During the Kitchen Scene(TM), it's all about Buck taking accountability for that and forcing Eddie to confront the fact that he deserve someone who shows up, he deserves an explanation, he should hold those around him to a higher standard, and he should expect more from those he cares bout, because Buck wants him to realize that he is inherently worthy.
It's the fact that these 3 events happen in successive episodes (barring Athena Begins, but I hold that episode separate outside the main events). Just . . . I will never be over their relationship. The way they love each other is unheard of and unseen and unparalleled. It's the standard that everyone should strive for and the ideal. They heal each other and push each other to be better and tell each other what they need to hear. Objectively, even without my buddie hat on, it's just so freaking beautiful, and I don't understand how people can't root for that kind of perfect, comprehensive, layered storytelling.
Your honor, I rest my case.

Since my post about Olivers GOTH VIBES (tm) is picking up again
Gerry one day encounters Oliver in passing, like idk somehow he walks past the crystal shop he worked in for a while. Gerry is like really feeling very ‘I’m on point, I’m so Goth today, I am peak Goth, my blacks are immaculate and my platforms are high and my trenchcoat is just dramatic enough,’ and then just catches the briefest glimpse of Oliver and then is like ‘Dammit I’ll never be as goth as him’

The earliest known French bookstamp, and a new addition to the library of a colorful bibliophile: Jacques Thiboust of Bourges
Fifty-two discoveries from the BiblioPhilly project, No. 6/52
Georges Chastellain, c. 1402/1410–1475, L’outré d’amour pour amour morte, Philadelphia, The Rosenbach Museum and Library, MS 443/21, fol. 1r, with miniature showing The author dreaming
While being attentive to the circumstances surrounding the genesis and production of a Medieval or Renaissance manuscript is often our primary concern as scholars, sometimes the subsequent destiny of an item can be equally engaging, if not more so! This is especially the case when the attested later owner(s) of the book are A) relatively close in date to the production of the manuscript and thus valuable as a witness to the early diffusion of a particular text, and B) known to have owned other books and recognized for having had a particular focus to their bibliophilism. Today we will examine a manuscript which, though notable for its textual content and illustrations, is of further interest due to its rich early ownership history, which has never before been remarked upon.
This short, rhymed work in French by the Burgundian chronicler and poet Georges Chastellain (c. 1402/1410–1475) is entitled L’outré d’amour pour amour morte, which can be rendered in English as something resembling “The Lover’s Lament over the Death of his Love” (see here for the digitized version of the modern critical edition).[1] The manuscript is housed at The Rosenbach Library and Museum as MS 443/21. The author, Chastellain, was a prominent figure at the Burgundian court, serving dukes Phillip the Good and Charles the Bold with distinction. L’outré d’amour, written in 214 octosyllabic octets, is an example of a Roman à clef, a narrative describing actual events presented as a fictional account using altered names. This is a later name for the genre, but this type of work was popular in mid-fifteenth-century Franco-Burgundian culture, where a fractious political situation sometimes made the overt enunciation of one’s political views problematic.
The Rosenbach manuscript, which is missing four stanzas between folios 7 and 8, was likely produced in Western France in the 1460s or 1470s, judging by the style of the bâtarde script and the four unframed miniatures (four more spaces for miniatures remain blank); it may well date from Chastellain’s lifetime. Ours is at least the seventh known manuscript copy of the text to be identified, and it can be added to the five exemplars listed in the Archives de littérature du moyen âge (none of which is currently fully digitized), and a copy at the Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal with eleven miniatures that has very recently been digitized. Chastellain’s text became quite popular in the early sixteenth century, as it was included in the earliest printed anthology of Middle French poetic texts, the Jardin de plaisance et fleur de rethoricque, first issued by the Parisian printer Antoine Vérard in 1502 and re-printed no fewer than eight times before 1528.
   MS 443/21, fol. 1r and Georges Chastellain, L’Oultré d’amours pour amour morte, Paris, Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal, Ms 5118, fol. 1r (253 x 174 mm versus 203 x 143 mm in size)
Given the popularity of this text in Renaissance France, the manuscript in question is especially notable on account of its subsequent presence in an important library some fifty years after its creation, when it was well on its way to becoming a classic. The Rosenbach manuscript was in fact once owned by Jacques Thiboust (1492–1555), a noted humanist book collector in early-sixteenth-century France.[2] Thiboust trained as a jurist and remained deeply devoted to the region around his native Bourges, in the Berry. He served as a notary and secretary to King Francis I and his sister Marguerite de Valois in an illustrious career that brought him into contact with a wide range of poets and chroniclers. He is best known for being at the center of a literary circle of friends in Bourges in the 1520s, 30s, and 40s, which brought together local clerics, merchants, scholars, and physicians, but also such luminaries as statesman Guillaume Bochetel, the archbishop of Bourges Jacques Leroy, the poet and translator of classical texts François Habert, and the eminent poet Clément Marot. Thiboust’s renown was such that already at the age of 24 he was the subject of a portrait, currently untraced, by the leading French court artist of the time, Jean Clouet. A number of personal manuscripts in Thiboust’s own hand survive, recording his land holdings surrounding his manor at Quantilly, near Bourges (Bourges, Archives départementales du Cher, G 61 and E 108; Paris, BnF, MS fr. 32954). A fascinating Friendship Book or Liber amicorum that belonged to Thiboust (Paris, BnF, MS fr. 1667) contains numerous odes and poems to Thiboust’s many friends.
We know the precise details of Thiboust’s acquisition of the Rosenbach manuscript on account of an autograph inscription he wrote on the inside front cover, in a fine bâtarde script. It reads:  “C’est au Seigneur de Quantilly M. Jacques Thiboust, notaire et secrétaire du Roy et esleu en Berry. Et le luy a donné sire Jehan Jaupitre son frère. En mars 1535.” (“This belongs to the lord of Quantilly Mr. Jacques Thiboust, notary and secretary to the King, and elected in Berry. And it was given to him by his brother Jean Jaupitre, in March 1535”). Jaupitre appears to have been Thiboust’s wife Jeanne de la Font’s half brother; the manuscript thus exemplifies the type of infra-familial gift of a book that was becoming so popular in Renaissance France. “Des livres de M. Jacques Thiboust” (“From the books of M. Jacques Thiboust”) is additionally written on lower pastedown, and the date of “mars 1535” is repeated on recto of first flyleaf.  The title of the work, “Cy commance le livre de l’outré d’amour pour amour morte,” has also been added in upper margin of folio 1r. Like other books that belonged to Thiboust, this manuscript has his name all over it!
MS 443/21, upper pastedown, with inscription by Jacques Thiboust, and lower pastedown, with additional inscription
As if that weren’t definite evidence enough to establish ownership, the manuscript bears Thiboust’s unique, ink-stamped ownership mark on the verso of the front flyleaf and the verso of folio 37.[3] The bookstamp displays Thiboust’s arms. These are, in French heraldic terms: “écartelé au 1 et 4 d’argent à la face de sable, chargé de trois glands d’or accompagné de trois feuilles de chêne de sinople, deux en chef, une en pointe; au 2e d’argent à une anille de moulin de sable [Dumoulin] ; au 3e d’or à deux perroquets adossés de sinople [Rusticat]; et sur le tout d’azur à une étoile-comète d’or [Villemer]. Above and below the square armorial are the mottoes, in Latin and French respectively, “Lex et Regio” and “Qui voit s’esbat,” which can be translated “Law and Region,” or “Law and Land;” and “He who sees frolicks, relaxes, or amuses oneself.”). The latter is in fact an anagram of Thiboust’s first and last names (switching I for J and a V for a U), devised by the noted poet Clément Marot.[4] For good measure, the French motto has been recopied in pen below the stamp on folio 37 verso, and signed, again, by Thiboust himself.
MS 443/21, flyleaf i verso and fol. 37v, showing the armorial bookstamp, motto, and signature of Jacques Thiboust
Thiboust’s serially reproducible woodcut ownership mark is the earliest of its kind to be used in France, and perhaps the earliest (Western) bookstamp impression to survive. It is found in other fifteenth-century manuscripts he owned (for example the anonymous La voie d’enfer et de paradis, Les Enluminures, TM 775; see their excellent description and photos), in contemporary printed books (a copy of Le couronnement du roi François [Paris, 1520] held at Yale University Library), and in significantly older items, including this twelfth-century version of Josephus’s Antiquities, now in the Bibliothèque nationale de France (ms. lat. 15427), which he gifted to his friend Bochetel. The Philadelphia manuscript is a previously unnoticed addition to Thiboust’s library, and further confirms this humanist bibliophile’s interest in the creation of a French literary canon through the collection of manuscript exemplars, even at a time when this text was widely available in print.
La voie d’enfer et de paradis, Bourges, c. 1460. Les Enluminures, TM 775,  verso of final flyleaf-fol. 1r, an example of another mid-fifteenth-century French manuscript with Jacques Thiboust’s bookstamp and inscription
