TSME WEEK 2024 - DAY 1
Prompt: Catching Pokemon
“What is that thing? I thought it was a tiny turtle pokemon…”
“Mairin, that’s no tiny turtle pokemon…” Steven breathed out, looking up at how it transformed, with crystals surrounding it and a crown atop its head. The air felt much colder, and more menacing.
“...That’s Terapagos.”

Well, well, well! It turns out that the winner of the favorite character poll is none other than the spoiled sinnamon roll, aka our beloved Hoenn Champion
Like the pampered young master he is, he somehow managed to win against the main characters of the show, with 31.5% of the votes. What can he say? He is just the strongest there is, right now!
Don’t forget you can check out the prompts for TSME Week and participate in the event to celebrate its 10th anniversary

TSME WEEK
Day 6: Memorabilia
Okay so this prompt I took fairly self-indulgently! Everytime I go on a trip or on holiday, I try to get a rubber duck from that place... so I made the trio as rubber ducks! I wish they were real so I could add them to my collection!

OwO what’s this about Alain having an Abra?
Tumblr media
Can't sleep so might as well.
There's some au stuff involved, but I'll keep that explanation quick. Basically, I have this au called the ness and tal au, where Alain has Xerneas(Ness) and yveltal (Tal) as siblings (more info here but you don'treally need to know all that to understand this). They're extremely chaotic and i love them
So Alain starts travelling, right. And at some point very early into their journey they run into an abra. Ness and Tal help catch the abra because abras can teleport and that's convenient. The abra is named Ara.
And Ara is a complete theatre kid. His personality can be summed up as "nothing is worth doing if you can't show off while doing it". He wants the glory. He's gonna go the whole nine yards even to do something mundane.
He also has a mega alakazamite. Just, on him. The trio is excited about that, obviously. Its a mega stone! That's what they set out to search for!
Escept the abra isn't letting them take it so- whoops, gonna deal with that later i guess
Ara loves battling. Ara wants to evolve to be stronger, too. But he doesn't want to just evolve. Because simply evolving isn't good enough. Not for him. Its got to be in style.
Alright then.
They battle train him on and off - tms and stuff, charmander evolves into charmeleon, canon, tsme, yada yada yada you know the general stuff. At some point Ara has to switch the mega stone for an everstone so he doesn't accidentally evolve (we're going to run on the assumption that lysandre doesnt know/care about the alakazamite because its more convenient that way)(same goes for the legendaries or you can assume they start keeping their distance or w/e)
So... yeah. Canon's happening. We make it to the league. The lumiose conference! A competition among the strongest trainers in the region!
You know what's a glorious thing to do?
Win the league
You know what's an even more glorious thing to do?
Evolve while winning the league.
And so. SO. THE PLAN BEGINS
Most of the league goes the same way. Alain just sweeps with charizard or metagross. Until the finals. The finals. The biggest battle of them all.
Ash sends out pikachu.
Alain sends out an abra.
Now, of course, this has to be a joke, right. An abra. In league finals.
Okay whatever we can win this but the abra lands a few psychics and its evolving?? Oh shit- and you know what! Kadabra's dex entry says that its psychic powers can give those around it headaches and a headache is definitely not good for battles so now obviously ashs team gets the headaches
I'm not entirely too sure how the battle itself goes. Either we have a lot of switching or a complete arasweep so by the end of it ara is an alakazam (this is the ONLY reason why its the ness and tal au. Ness messed around a little and gave him a little energy boost so he'd be able to evolve without trade)(sidenote, if we do switching, there is 100% going to be a scene where charizard is absolutely gettin beat down but alain doesnt mega evolve her and she FAINTS AND WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON-)
In any case. The final matchup is Ara the newly evolved alakazam vs ash's super cool greninja! And considering the only moves ara has used so far are psychic and protect, and is extremely weak because of the damage he has taken, it should b an easy win for greninja.
Right?
But Ara isn't done yet. He's going to go the whole ten yards. He has his megastone.
Alain whips out his keystone and its mega evolution time baby
(This also checks out. All lysandre wants is the meg evolution energy. The source doesn't matter)
So now its Ara the mega alakazam vs ash's super cool ash-greninja
:3
And you know how ara has used only two moves so far and is extremely low on health
:33
He knows reversal (they can get it in gen6 by transfer from another gen which, by anime logic, is completely fair game)
And this is the only part of the battle for which I've actually run a damage calc, and yes, at low enough health its a guaranteed ohko
So
Arasweep!
He's very silly, you know?
EDIT i forgot to add. Yes the general public is very confused because alakazam are a trade evo. Yes alain is asked abouf that. No he only evil grins and ignores the question. Yes diantha and sycamore figure it out and find it funny. Yes ash is EXTREMELY confused and may end up having a self doubt arc akin to snowbelle city- but we're not dealing with THAT today

Pokemon Head Canons :)
These Head Canons are for both tsme trio and my AU (Au: Pokemon Sunrise | IK ITS STUPID IDK WHAT TO NAME IT / Can yall help me get a name for my AU?)
(this is going to be really long so sorry)
General
There is a time skip 2 times- 3 year time skip and 4 year time skip.
Alain-
Alain is 18 Turning 19 in XYZ ( 3 year - 21 / 4 year - 25 )
Alain birthday is July 24, 1998 (Lavy Hc <3)
Professor Sycamore adopted Alain and Maron. So Alain and Marons last name are Sycamore.
Alain does live in the lab but he moved in with Aki at 19 (After Kalos Crisis
Alain and Maron are researchers that work with Sycamore.
At the Age of 25 he took his dads job and now is the professor of Kalos.
Alain, Daigo, Maron work together ever since Alain and Daigo are dating
HE CHANGED HIS STYLE BECAUSE OF AKI- THANK YOU-
He has a matching charm thing with Aki.
He has kinda longer hair, like a mullet
Daigo and Alain started to Date after Tsme.
Alain buys Promise rings that match with Daigo because they promised each other that they would get married. (Age 23)
Alain does propose to Daigo at age 25. (but as fiancées)
Tsme happened around 17 and Kalos Crisis was 18-19
When Alain figured out he was being used by Lysandre, he broke his key stone in the process (On Marie / Lumiose tower )
Alain does have PTSD, Trust issues, has a hard time to show feelings.
Alain at the age of 23 he became the Champion of Kalos (Master Tournament happened around 21)
(The reason why he is so close to Aki because Alain see Aki as a young sister and Aki sees Alain as a older brother. NOT BECAUSE I SHIP THEM)
Alain was with a happy family but his family was toxic and never was proud of Alain. That effected him to make him not proud of himself too.
Alains dad left (Alain was 6 when he left) leaving Alain and his mom all by themselves but in the process his mom left Alain too because Alain looks likes his father (has the same eyes).
Alains family usually goes to the adoption center to look for another kid because Alain always wanted a younger sister.
After being abandoned he left the house because he was starving for days and went to the adoption center where he was cared.
Being at the adoption center for almost a year- Sycamore took him in as a assistant then a son (but secretly Sycamore took care of him like he was a son).
Dagio-
Daigo is 20 in XYZ ( 3 year - 22 / 4 year - 26 )
Master tournament
Daigos birthday in on February 11, 1997
Daigo is a royal core person (WHICH WORKS SO MUCH)
He is still the Hoenn champion and now the CEO of the Devon Company.
He got eyelashes because hes girlie pop
Daigo hair is longer then Alains-
His personality is vey sassy and very dirty minded ( BECAUSE YES)
He has tried Pokemon performing before but he doesn't do it anymore sadly. (He actually does secretly mwahaah with Mikuri of course)
Back when Daigo was still the heir of the company, he was suppose to have an arranged marriage with May so the company could be more supported with the help of Hoenn Queen.
But he fell in love with Alain so he told his dad, and the marriage was called off but his dad was really disappointed.
Alain, Daigo, and Aki go around all the regions to go to labs and do research or just help out.
Daigo did change his suit outfit because Aki did make one for Daigo (I will draw the design trust)
He is a very sleepy dude and doesn't get enough sleep because of work just like Alain-
Daigo doesn't have a great relationship with his parents but is trying to get closer to his mom. His mom is really nice to Daigo's friends- but shes more friendly to Alain, Mikuri and Maron.
(I will make a part 2 later so it wouldn't be so long)

The Pokeani really has gone downhill after finishing XYZ. The change in art style, the change from a continuous Gym League journey to just going wherever the plot of the episode demands, catching Legendaries, Mythicals, and Ultra Beasts. It's sad, really.
I don't think that's really true . . . while I didn't like Ash's design in SM and while the slice of life format wasn't really for me, SM did have some really stellar episodes, such as the one where Mallow reunited with her mom's spirit. I also really liked the fact that all of the characters were able to build upon their interactions with each other. While some didn't get as much focus as others, they also had a pretty large cast so that was at least a little understandable. Journeys has less of an excuse with how Koharu has been neglected, but Journeys also has some standout episodes and arcs, not the least of which has been the sheer number of returns from past companions. Even Tracey got to come back from the very nice farm that Oak had apparently sent him to in past series. So that was really nice.
Plus, while I did of course LOVE LOVE LOVE TSME and Alan's episodes in the main series, it's not as if XY(Z) didn't have its own problems. From how Ash was put on a pedestal by practically everyone and wasn't allowed to have noticeable flaws to the sheer downgrade of Performance Showcases from Contests, XY(Z) had a lot of issues too that didn't make it the best series ever.
I think every saga of the PokéAni has its strengths and weaknesses. The real problem, imo, is that Ash has continued to be the protagonist, which has hampered the types of stories they're able to tell. For instance, imagine if Ash had stayed in Alola as its Champion at the end of SM, Journeys focused on Gou and Koharu equally as they traveled around a region (preferably Galar), and then Ash came back specifically for the Masters 8. Everyone would have been so hyped to see him again, and it would have been great. Instead we had to watch him have an uber team handed to him, have a lot of his battles off-screen, etc because "Ash trains to be the strongest trainer" is something that's been done over and over again for the past 25 years. It's old and tired. If they have him beat Leon at the end of this, then I hope it's because they're retiring him (and the TRio along with him since he's the only reason they're there). It'd be what's best for the anime, I think.
But regardless, like I said at the top of that paragraph, every saga of the PokéAni has its good points and its bad. It's not a perfect show and it never has been. Doesn't mean we can't criticize it when need-be, but I think holding any one saga of the anime up as a gold standard to trash on the others is always a mistake, just as it's a mistake to do that with the game generations.

I wanted to draw tsme trio in halloween costumes but realized I don’t have the skills to make witch costume for Mairin and vampire costume for Steven (angel costume for Alain turned out to be waaayyy better then I expected but I want all three in the same costume category) so I’m dressing them as pokemons: Yellow Flower Florges for Mairin, Mega Mawile for Steven and Xerneas for Alain.
I might do angel Alain but we also have tsme4 anniversary tomorrow and I have to finnish my Alain vs Malva art and then speedrun the costumes…
… I believe in angel Alain supremancy…

Headcannons (Part 2) (TSME trio)
Yay more headcannons no one asked for bUT C’MON I HAVE A LOT OF THEM
LANGUAGES:
Alain: French (Kalosian), English, very little Japanese from Steven
Mairin: English, some knowledge on French (Kalosian), and knows how to say both good morning and good afternoon in Japanese.
WEIRD THINGS THEY DO WITH THEIR POKEMON:
Alain: ooh boi...
- He has taught all of them how to read, in fact, Weavile loves to read so much everytime he goes to the book store he lets her out and she picks out a new book.
- He also sleeps against Charizard if there isn’t a bed, and has snuggled with both Mairin and Steven against Charizard, both together (ok so im definitely writing that) and seperately.
- Alain lets Mairin cheat on her homework with Metagross, as long as she can explain what the heck she’s learning to him (and sometimes when she cant but makes Metagross explain it; Metagross doesn’t mind explaining.)
- oh right Alain’s team, especially after the Team Flare Arc, communicates with a little notepad Alain keeps in his pocket.
- Bisharp loves it when Alain reads it stories, which he never minds because he loves his pokemon
- Unfezant used to perch on Alain’s head when it was a Pidove and Trainquill, and still does, much to Alain’s disapproval and lack of balance with a giant bird on his head
- I was gonna say that Alain sits on Tyranitar’s head and watches the sunset but its only 6′7 so he doesn’t bECAUSE ITS SO SHORT
- Alain was shocked at how short Tyranitar is.
Mairin: ok her team is smaller
sometimes Chespie hides in Mairin’s hat and when Mairin’s angry Chespie will pop out and smack whoever makes her angry
Bebe absolutely hates Alain and attacks him every time she sees him. Sometimes, Mairin joins in (playfully, of course.)
Steven: im only doing Metagross ok
- Sometimes if he cant make a decision, has Metagross do it for him.
ok so this is way too long so maybe a part three

...Ooooh!
In a week’s time, we’ll learn more about SM120. The episode where Kyogre appears in front of Suiren and others.
Ooooooooh booooiii I want to know more already!
Also, first appearance of a Pokémon Hunter in Alola has me extra curious? Why haven’t they appeared before? Is this Hunter from another region and followed Kyogre all the way to Alola? Are Ultra Holes involved? Y’know, the Ultra games give you the possibility to encounter legendaries in various Ultra Holes? Is this the same Kyogre Satoshi’s met n Hoenn, which also rampaged during TSME specials, or is this one from another universe? Am I speculating too much? Possibly. High chance I am thinking on this too much. But I kinda like it :D
What we know so far is that this Kyogre is feeling ill and is being chased by the said Hunter. Why is Kyogre feeling ill? Did the Hunter shoot something poisonous on it? Why is this Hunter crazy enough to chase after the Hoenn Legendary.
The episode title is ‘Suiren hooks a Kyogre?!‘ (EXTRA IMPORTANT NOTE: No, hooking does not equal catching. Think of the game mechanic: when you hook a Pokémon, you don’t catch it right away. You either battle it and then catch it, or enter the battle phase and either faint the Pokémon or run away. Suiren’s fishing style has always been: befriend hooked Pokémon, not catch hooked Pokémon.) So maybe the scenario of the episode is that Suiren’s gone out fishing with Satoshi and others (might not be the whole cast) (Edit: summary states Satoshi and others are playing at the sea so kinda close?), and suddenly Suiren’s fishing pole hooks something and a Kyogre pops out to everyone’s awe. Then they notice the Hunter and want to do something about it. While I somehow jokingly adore the idea of Kyogre getting caught by Suiren, I’m just gonna say right away that it’s not gonna happen, but instead Suiren manages to bond with Kyogre somewhat. This could also be hinting towards some final arc?
The staff list is the trio the fandom seems to call as the golden trio? Atsuhiro Tomioka, Yuji Asada and Masaaki Iwane with Izumi Shimura. That’s an amazing staff list, and I think the last time we had these three working on same ep, we got the double UB episode, SM078 (one of my fav UB eps btw!). I’m certainly expecting greatness from this episode, from narrative, animation and story-wise. Whatever the end result, I know I’ll be enjoying this episode.
I just want to know more y’know? lol Ah, May 5th couldn’t come any faster~

Pokeani: The Evolution of the Structure
Part of what made the original Pokemon: Indigo League - the Kanto saga - so good was that Takeshi Shudo, whose job as head writer is also known as “series constructor”, gave it a very solid structure, dividing the progression of its story by several distinctive parts, usually by the part of Kanto that is the focus or objective. With 82 episodes, the structure looked like this:
Pewter: Ep. 1-5 Ceruelan: Ep. 6-13 Vermillion: Ep. 14-21 Saffron: Ep. 22-24 Celadon: Ep. 25-29 Fuschia: Ep. 30-36 Travels: Ep. 37-54; Ep. 65-66 Snap: Ep. 55-57 Cinnabar: Ep. 58-60 Viridian: Ep. 61-64; Ep. 67 Pre-League: Ep. 68-74 League: Ep. 75-82
Obviously, the one structural weakness would be the Travels section, which, at 20 episodes, lasted far too long (and had two of its episodes delayed due to the infamous Porygon episode incident), but that’s not to say that nothing interesting or important happened during this section (Charmeleon/Charizard, Jigglypuff, and Togepi all made their debuts here, and we got some spotlight into Jessie and James’ sad childhoods.)  Shudo usually knew just what to keep going throughout (the development paths of the main characters) and what to leave behind once its purpose was served (the various mini-arcs and characters like Todd Snap).
What long pissed me off is that this kind of solid structure was absent for the Orange Islands, Johto, Hoenn and Battle Frontier sagas afterward - dropped in favor of a lazier and more simplistic “episodes (usually filler) just happen up until an important episode or episodes come along, rinse and repeat”.  This was at its absolute worst in Johto - Orange Islands was too short of an arc for it to be much of a problem, and the two Advanced Generation arcs actually didn’t do it so bad since the added quest for May (and villainous team arc in Hoenn) meant that important episodes occurred with more frequency. Johto, on the other hand, was Filler Hell, with some important episodes on rare occasion.  It’s why Shudo quit his job - why be on board for “Series Construction” if he’s not allowed to actually construct the series?
Sinnoh in the Diamond/Pearl series was the first to regain a head writer with the credit of “Series Construction”, Atsuhiro Tomioka.  Unfortunately, he wasn’t very good at his job here. Not only did he hog over half of the important episodes for himself to actually write rather than share with the others as Shudo had done, meaning he seemed to view this as a personal vanity project, but there was NO solid structure to the series at all!  This is at the very core of why I dislike the DP series - the structure is awful, and consists of multiple recurring important things rotating into prominence over and over again throughout four years, leading to sensations of whiplash and ultimately fatigue. It’s basically like this:
The Beginning: Ep. 1-10 Dawn's First Contest w/ Zoey: Ep. 11-12 SUDDENLY Filler: Ep. 13-14 SUDDENLY Oreburg City w/ Paul: Ep. 15-18 SUDDENLY Pokemon Capture: Ep. 19 SUDDENLY Hunter J: Ep. 20 SUDDENLY Filler: Ep. 21-25 SUDDENLY Contest w/ Kenny: Ep. 26-27 SUDDENLY Filler: Ep. 28-29 SUDDENLY Honey Mini-Arc: Ep. 30-32 SUDDENLY Filler: Ep. 33 SUDDENLY Pokemon Capture w/ Zoey: Ep. 34 SUDDENLY Elite Four Lucian: Ep. 35 SUDDENLY Eterna City w/ Team Galactic: Ep. 36-37 SUDDENLY Filler: Ep. 38-39 SUDDENLY Cynthia w/ Paul: Ep. 40 SUDDENLY Zoey: Ep. 41 SUDDENLY Filler: Ep. 42-44 SUDDENLY Hunter J: Ep. 45 SUDDENLY Filler: Ep. 46-47 SUDDENLY Recap Episode: Ep. 48 SUDDENLY Contest w/ Zoey and Nando: Ep. 49 SUDDENLY Tag Battle Mini-Arc w/ Paul: Ep. 50-52
....And that's just the first year!
I’m sorry, but I just couldn’t with this style.  There’s pacing plot threads and characters gradually throughout a series, and then there’s just throwing as much shit in as possible, and having them rotate in and out of focus so fast and in such a short-lived manner - in between the usual filler, mind you - that the result is by the end, I don’t care anymore.  I don’t care how the Myth Arc is wrapped up and how Team Galactic is defeated, I don’t care why Dawn is called “Dee Dee”, I don’t care about Ash and Paul’s go-nowhere rivalry, I’m just tired of the roller coaster of plot threads, characters, mini-arcs and general crap without any solid structure and pacing behind it.  It feels like Tomioka was just going “LOOK! WE HAVE MORE PLOT, CONTINUITY AND IMPORTANT ELEMENTS NOW!” without actually making said plot, continuity and important elements gel together in a cohesive way. It’s like Spider-Man 3, except that I’d gladly take Emo Peter over Emo Paul any day, he’s actually entertaining!
The Black and White series is the one that changed everything, for the better. It restored a coherent structure to the anime, very akin to what Shudo did in Kanto.  It’s like this:
The Beginning / Meteonite: Ep. 1-25 Road to Nimbasa: Ep. 26-40 The Don Battle: Ep. 41-44 Nimbasa Subway / Meowth: Ep. 45-50 Nimbasa City Tour: Ep. 51-54 Milos Island / Weather Trio: Ep. 58-63 Road to Mistralton: Ep. 55-57, Ep. 64-70 The Donamite: Ep. 71-75 End of the Badge Quest: Ep. 76-86 Undella / Meloetta: Ep. 87-99 Iris' Homecoming: Ep. 100-103 The Unova League: Ep. 104-110 The White Ruins / N: Ep. 111-124 Decolore Islands: Ep. 125-144
It’s mostly a very good, solid structure.  The structural weaknesses are in the notoriously disappointing third year - thanks to executive meddling, The Unova League is a tad too short, The White Ruins / N is definitely too short, and Decolore Islands is too long...in fact, Decolore Islands has no good reason to even exist other than to preemptively advertise the XY games.
The XY series also provided a solid structure for its story, like this:
The Beginning: Ep. 1-10 Road to Cylagge: Ep. 11-25, TSME Act I Mega Evolution Trials / Korrina: Ep. 26-34 Summer Camp / Rival Trio: Ep. 35-44 Serena's Goal: Ep. 45-60, TSME Act II Back to Lumiose City / Clemont: Ep. 61-70, TSME Act III Kalos Quests: Ep. 71-93, TSME Act IV Zygarde / Squishy: Ep. 94-107 The Master Class: Ep. 108-113 End of the Badge Quest: Ep. 114-122 The Kalos League: Ep. 123-131 Team Flare / Lysandre: Ep. 132-136 Goodbye to Kalos: Ep. 137-140
This structure also has three points of weakness: Road to Cylagge and Kalos Quests are both lengthy periods where little of anything of interest or relevance happens, while Serena’s Goal is fraught with letdowns, above all being the titular goal which ends up being basically contests but without the battles or the charm. These weaknesses hurt XY worse than BW’s affected it, as while BW’s weaknesses all happened toward the very end where it could stand to lose viewers, XY’s happened much earlier and as a result, the third year (XY&Z) was an absolute ratings bomb, since most of the show’s core viewers had already dropped out by then. And given that XY&Z was of exceptional quality, this is incredibly disappointing.
And now we have Sun and Moon, which is like this so far:
The Beginning: Ep. 1-4 Melemele Trials: Ep. 5-20 School Days: Ep. 21-30 Akala Trials: Ep. 31-37 Kanto Field Trip: Ep. 38-43 Cosmog / Nebby: Ep. 44-55
Yet another solid structure, with no weaknesses thusfar. Let’s see how long it lasts...
