Traintober day 23: Big World
Late, but here is a piece for Traintober.(Also, this is my first time drawing Nia, so sorry if I messed up.)
Thomas and Nia share tales to Baby Gordon about their adventures around the world. Baby Gordon is enchanted and hopes one day he can go see the world like Thomas.

They Sure Do Talk Funny
So I hear Beau's gettin' a new fancy-ass toy. Good for him! I too am confused as to why, because I know that these decisions are made based on financial logic and not for reasons like that Beau absolutely fucks.
Tumblr media
I mean, look at this fkn guy. Gotta a whistle and a bell, lookin' majestic as all hell. He's Sam Elliott if Sam Elliott were a train!
But more than that - and even beyond that he and I have roughly the same dumbass accent - Beau is the centerpiece in what I think is quite a bold move for the series.
The show tended to shy away from harsh realities that the books liked to play with every so often. Especially as Sodor's economy improves - and as specialization in steam maintenance is centralized locally to the Steamworks - consequences for dumbass train behavior are far less steep than they used to be. Back in the day, if a train acted a fool, he ran a significant risk of meeting severe and often permanent consequences for it.
While the show never addressed the Culdee Fell Railway (which, fine, those trains are weird looking) and so it never spoke of Godred, they did take a stab at Duke's story about the Mid Sodor Railway's No. 2, Smudger. Like in the books, though, the logical conclusion of his fate is never seen. The fact that they kinda glossed over what dieselization and scrapping actually entailed for Stepney's storyline? They clearly did not want to get too heavy with the subject matter. They would flirt with it, use vague scrap engine props and that scary-ass smelter yard set, but it was never explicit the way the books made it.
So it's absolutely wild that they'd not only fill out the trilogy of cautionary tales with Thomas as the subject, but also throw in what amounts to a train corpse right next to him so he can Think About That.
Tumblr media
And Beau is definitely of the same school of thought as Culdee and Duke when it comes to puttin' the fear of Uselessness in a young, reckless engine. Had he caught Thomas before he ate shit, he'd probably had used that rusted husk of a train the background to illustrate the point that there may not be anyone coming to save you out here in the middle of nowhere (bein' that this is the real-ass middle of nowhere, not just Maron).
But since Thomas did eat shit, Beau can just use Thomas himself to make that point. Trains who come off the rails out here get dusty and rusty. Thomas is already dusty and he'll be gettin' dustier still! Doesn't look like rain at least, so there's that!
Tumblr media
But Beau's also got a bit of wise-ass to him too. He mentions that engines can be placed back on the rails without a breakdown crane, but it is most definitely a question of resources and motivation on this railway. And then, guffawin' to hisself about it as he is still explaining this, he just leaves! He purposely let it be known that rescue is a possibility, but he also purposely did not imply at all that he would make any effort to see to it. He even took Thomas' and Ace's crew with him, which puts a real question on how this is going to end if there's no human element to this predicament anymore.
Beau does eventually come back with a full crew to haul Thomas and Ace back on the track and reload his cars - southern hospitality! - but consider. If Thomas had known help was coming, would the situation have seemed quite so dire? Doubtful. But after spending an evening under the stars, staring at the corpse of some other hapless dope who was in his same situation and met a cruel fate for it, contemplating train mortality, thinking about all the poor choices he made that led him to this and how he might never get to correct them?
Tumblr media
I betcha his ass'll mind the speed limit after that!

Okay so imma give y’all a small update before I show this drawing I did.
I finally recovered from being sick after two whole weeks and I’m already getting comfy with being 23 years old. This Drawing that I did was from when I was sick and wanted to draw something Ttte.
(ALSO THE BASE I USED FOR THE PICTURE DOES NOT BELONG TO ME!!! I FOUND THE BASE FROM A POST CROWS DID WHEN THEY USED THE SAME BASE SO THEY KNOW WHERE THEY GOT IT FROM!!)
AND ANOTHER THING!! THIS DRAWING CONTAINS SHIRTLESS; BOXER WEARING HOT GUYS!!! CONTINUE IF YOU WANT!!!
Tumblr media
So back when I remembered Beau was in the series and when it was around Valentine’s Day; I ended up wanting to draw something that involved him and an Idea my wife @lovedevildice4ever and I had when we were talking about some RP Ideas we had.
One came up about Beau coming back to Sodor to see the Big engines (Edward; Henry and Gordon) (Also Got the Idea from a Comic @hkpika07 did with Glynn getting hugged by the trio) and he makes the decision to stay on Sodor.
Which would lead to later that night when he finds James in a Tantrum. He tried to get James to talk about what happened but James wouldn’t Listen. So Beau went to a nearby radio; Put on a slow dance song and took James into the dance. James (Being caught off guard) started to go along with it while looking at Beau and realizing why so many people (Men; Women and anyone in the LGBTQIA community) loved this dude!!
(Hence Why James’s Hair be getting all fired up with red flames that would sometimes manifest into hearts.) Beau was able to calm James down and actually get him to start falling for him hard without even realizing it. (James is in his 30’s, Beau is in his 50’s in our AU so they are adults people!). It leads to James being unable to sleep that night because of what he had done with Beau while Beau didn’t even mind; All he did was help James calm his temper.

Any chance we get official models of BWBA characters in merch ranges is good to me.
I mean yeah no one cared for them but if people can write compelling stories for minor RWS characters, and even blank slates from Trainz sites, I’m sure some could do the same to these sillies.

Doing a piece for someone. They wanted an old western ttte character and I immediately thought of Beau.
It's not done, but on this super rare occurrence I am really happy with how Beau's face turned out here. I was hoping to make it look like he was about to shout out YEE HAW!
Now I just hope that when I take the pen to this it doesn't ruin Beau's face

Big World, Big Adventures Railtour Program Part 7: The World Works On The NWR
This will detail my HCs for some of the visiting engines, specifically the ones that actually worked on the railway during their visit. Visitors from the Mainland UK happen so often that I will not be counting them here despite the fact that I mentioned it in earlier parts. One engine joined the fleet after her arrival, and her name is italicized.
Etienne (France)
Etienne would work on the Peel Godred Branchline when he came to Sodor. He is the SNCF BB 9004 and was built in 1954 as a prototype, setting the world speed record for rail transport on March 29, 1955, reaching a speed of 331 kmh (about 206 mph). He was withdrawn in 1973 and placed on static display in the Cité du Train in Mulhouse. He remains there today, and his visit was during January 2016.
Gina (Italy)
Gina worked on the Ffarquhar branch line.  She is a Società Ferrovie Del Ticino 0-4-0T. She started life in 1877 as No. 204, and was renumbered as No. 205 in 1888 when the Ferrovie Nord Milano acquired her railway, and later would be renumbered as No. 200-05. Initially she was used on local passenger trains, before being allocated as station pilot at Milano Cadrona railway station in the 1920s. She remained there until the 1960s, when she was withdrawn. In 1974, she was restored to working order. She would visit a twice: in July 2019 and July 2020.
Lorenzo (Italy)
Lorenzo was employed on the main line as a goods engine. He started life as an FS Class 740 2-8-0, No. 740-283 in 1918, only to be rebuilt into a Class 743 in 1952. He would remain in service with the FS until 1979, at which point he was at last withdrawn and preserved. He would visit the railway together with Gina, and returned to Italy afterwards. He is currently stored inoperable in Torino.
Settebello (Italy)
Settebello worked on the Peel Godred branch line. He is an FS ETR 300, specifically No. 302. He was built in 1953 and used on the Settebello trains between Milano and Roma, hence his name. He would later be downgraded to less important passenger trains in 1984 before finally being withdrawn in 1988. Even after this, he was hired out for railtours and static displays until 2004, when he was stored. He went to Sodor in June 2015, and has since returned to Italy.
Yong Bao (China)
Yong Bao worked the main line as a passenger engine. He is a China Railways RM Pacific built in 1963 as No. RM-1163. He worked until the early 1990s when he was withdrawn and preserved at Aioi, Japan. He went to Sodor three times: in August 2018, July 2019, and July 2020.
Hong Mei (China)
Hong Mei worked on the Ffarquhar branch line. She is a China Railways GJ 0-6-0T built in 1958 as No. GJ-1018. She was a works engine at Chengdu works until her wtihdrawal in the 2000s. She was preserved and is currently on display at Sujiatun works. She visited Sodor alongside Yong Bao.
Kenji (Japan)
Kenji worked on the Peel Godred branch line. He is a 0 series Shinkansen train built in 1964 for the Tookaidou Shinkansen. He worked here until 2008 abd was last of his class in service. He is set R61. He visited the NWR in June 2020, and is otherwise on display at Kawasaki Heavy Industries in Hyogo Prefecture.
Hilo (Korea)
Hilo is this AU’s version of Hiro and is a Korean National Railways Mika 7 Class. This is, in fact, identical to Canon Hiro’s basis, a JNR D51, though standard gauge. He is one of two engines built for the Korean National Railway in 1950 and the only one to be preserved. He is currently on static display in Busan, though worked the main line as a mixed traffic engine on the NWR. He is an anomaly by the program’s standards, as he has visited the NWR on several occasions beginning in September 2009 despite the program only being launched in 2015. He did in fact remain on the NWR on long-term loan between January 2010 and June 2020.
Tracy (Australia)
Tracy worked on the Peel Godred branch line. She was built in 1955 and worked all over the Melbourne tram system until withdrawal in 1992. She was purchased by the Bendigo Tramway at this time, where she acts as a mobile restaurant. She is No. 976 and visited Sodor twice: from July to September 2017 and in August 2018.
Sam (USA)
Sam was actually the first engine to visit the Island of Sodor to kick off the program in February 2015, working heavy goods trains on the main line. He is also the largest, being Virginian Railway Class AG 2-6-6-6, specifically No. 906. He was built in 1945 and withdrawn in 1960. He is one of only two surviving engines from his railway, and the only survivor of his class. He would remain on the railway until August of 2015 before leaving. He is currently in storage in Roanoke.
Vincent (USA)
Vincent “Vinnie” was built in 1936 for the Grand Trunk Western Railway. He is No. 6407 of the U4A class, and worked the main line as a passenger engine during his NWR visit. He was an express engine for the GTWR until 1960 when he was withdrawn and put on static display in Ottawa, Canada. He visited the NWR in May 2016, and the engines regard him as by far their worst experience with any visitors brought to the NWR by the BWBA Railtour Program.
Genoa (USA)
Genoa is by far the oldest visiting engine that actively worked on the NWR, doing so on the Brendam branch line. She was built as an American Standard 4-4-0 in 1873 as the Virginia and Truckee Railway’s No. 12. She worked as a mixed traffic engine, running services along the line between Carson and Reno in Nevada before being withdrawn in 1908, going into storage at Carson works. In 1938, she was restored by the Eastern Railway as No. 60 “Jupiter” in New York for the World’s Fair. She was restored once again as her original No. 12 guise afterwards and shipped to Oakland to become a static display in 1940. She would masquerade as “Jupiter” twice more: in 1948 at the Chicago Railway Fair and in 1969 at the Golden Spike Centennial in Promontory, UT, after which she was restored into her 1902 livery, the one she currently carries. She visited the NWR in July 2018, during which she wore the Jupiter livery, albeit bearing her true name and number. She’s also this universes version of Beau.
Natalie (USA)
Natalie is a General Electric 25 ton shunter, and as her class suggests, these are the duties she performs on the NWR today. The type was used by many American railways. She was built in 1961 as an industrial engine and is a standout here, as she had only recently been withdrawn within the year she came to the NWR, being alongside Genoa in July 2018.
Carlos (Mexico)
Carlos is a GR3 2-8-0 of the Ferrocarriles Nacionales de México (National Railways of Mexico). He was in fact built in 1910 as a narrow gauge engine for the Veracruz Terminal Railway. He would later go on to work for the Teziutlan Copper Railway before being bought by NdeM in 1945. He was regauged to standard gauge in 1950 and withdrawn in 1963, he is currently on display at the  José Cardoso Tellez Railway Museum in Acámbaro, Guanajuato. He visited the NWR in May 2016 and July 2018, where he worked the main line as a goods engine.

I've been wondering, what year does The Rural Railway currently take place in?
From what I can can tell it's been around since the Wild West era (1860's to the 1890's.).
Oooohhh ok, I’m going into depth on this one;
Good question btw. SO I haven’t decided on a specific time period, BUT my timeline goes around the very LATE 1800s and doesn’t go past the 1970s. This is because the age of steam grew less popular in the 60s with Diesels and electrics gaining a lot more popularity. Yes it’s Wild West era sort of,,, your typical cowboy life style of robbing trains on your pony ended around the 1920s-30s. And cowboys grew less popular around then. I did want it to take place in just the late 1800s but the engines then are just so plain and I see them EVERYWHERE it gets boring. Yes I’m talking about beau or whatever the hell his name was in the newer ttte episodes. Not all American engines were like that the newer steam engines were very interesting. I’m not fond of the big long wonky looking smoke stack and the giant FAT laterns and cow plows on the front. Old Red (the real one) was built circa late 1800s and he doesn’t have that god awful unaestheticly pleasing design. SO I scrapped the idea of having it just take place in the late 1800s the real and true Wild West era, but with Red around he’s able to recount interesting things like that and make it a fun thing to add part of the story. Obviously Cracker Jack, Lochlan, and Donner are in no way shape or form built in the same years Red was. Lochlan was built in the 1920s? I think? (Sorry I’m too lazy to look that up atm) and Donner was built around 1930-40 when streamlined steam was popular. Cracker Jacks model was built in the 50s so with this info this is why I state my timeline doesn’t float behind the 70s. So in conclusion the rural railways timeline is (1890s-1970)

Apparently my ask box was closed this whole time. How embarrassing. Well, now it's open so if you want to ask things about trains with faces and get a tl;dr dissertation back, you can!
In the meantime, I'm also making this my pinned post so here's a directory of all the thesiseseses I've written already.
Essays about Canon:
The Singing List: Canon train opinions on singing.
Heartbraking: Worst Great Western You Know Had the Right of Way: Duck blew through a red signal. That's not The Way.
Diesel is a Ladies' Man: Diesel's got game. (Not actually an essay, but I think I've laid out a case.)
All at Air: Duck and Harold have an understanding.
What a Noise!: Some of Duck's cameos are pointless but not this one.
Difficulty With His Own: Sir Topham Hatt loves train bullshit.
The Lexicon: helpful shorthand phrases for discussing The Railway Series.
What Rebecca Does: Rebecca slaps, actually.
Duck v. James: Examination of their late-game "rivalry" in Season 18.
TTTE/DC (2015 - 2016): How well the DC Comics-themed minis match up to the characters they're dressed as.
TTTE/DC 2017: More DC trains.
They Sure Do Talk Funny: Beau is the third king of cautionary tales.
All Engines Ought To Have Names: Names are most important. Names mean you belong.
The Great Western Way: What exactly is the Great Western Way?
Diesel Does It Some More: Diesel is one of the few characters on the show that gets development.
Eat Shit Bridge: an ode to the Fenland Track.
Something Borrowed: Toad: Toad's the smartest guy on the railway and a little badass besides.
Top 3 Smartest Guys on the Railway - #2 Will Surprise You!
Original Fiction:
The Future is Still Silver and Black: preserved Chicago engines Pioneer Zephyr and Silver Pilot are pen pals. Ray also draws art of them as people (since our trains don't have faces) and we answer asks about them in this tag.
Fanfiction:
Engines in Sidings (with @littlewestern)
This is Mr. Conductor Talking; I Know What I'm Talking About
And posts about these stories for people who are into that.
