Man you're really angry that professional women's soccer is finally gaining the slightest bit of traction in this country. Maybe instead of being upset that this is finally a sport people want to invest in you should focus on literally anything else.
Nobody is sponsoring a sports team out of the goodness of their heart - it's a money making endeavour just like anything else. Right now the money's in soccer. It's not going to be that way forever, probably not even for very long. The pendulum will swing back again, it always does.
Women's soccer is not trying to take anything away from women's basketball. We're all just doing the best we can with what we've got.
Will the American market pendulum swing back from soccer to basketball? From the sport seen as a white girl sport to the sport seen as a black girl sport? Will it just naturally do that of its own accord? Is the market like a force of nature that just evenly benefits everyone?
No. The market is not a force of nature. It's a reflection of society and social priorities.
All I'm doing is observing the disparity in inter-sport investment. There's a lot of resources going from basketball to soccer. There's almost nothing going from soccer to basketball. Is that sustainable?
Looking at the current state of women's basketball in America, do you honestly feel like we ever had the pendulum?
Are you counting the Russian women's basketball bubble economy as our market pendulum moment? That's just a handful of superstars putting themselves at extreme risk for foreign laundered money payouts. But if that counts as the pendulum moment, is BG's detainment the pendulum swinging away? That's fucked up, huh.
Years of safety risks. Years of compromised integrity. Years of pro-Kremlin propaganda and apologism. That's where that Sue Bird Candace Parker money comes from. I thought that generation of players was getting their hands dirty so the women after them wouldn't have to. I thought that was the plan.
I'm not angry at the success of women's soccer in the US. Women's sports success is never a bad thing.
I'm just disappointed about where that Russian bubble money is ending up. It's disappointing to see that money leave for a different sport league on the eve of WNBA expansion. Expansion doesn't work without investors.
I don't want the overseas money cycle to repeat. If we can't trust Putin, why should we trust Erdogan? Will the Turkish money end with some equally horrific crisis to what women's basketball is facing now? Should we really be waiting around to find out? I just want this cycle to end. And I thought the way to end it was to invest the Russian bubble money into American basketball.
But if that money is going to American soccer, that's fine. As long as soccer players are investing a comparable amount in American basketball. But so far, they aren't.

There's a Dilara fan on Twitter saying Max is known by the turkish media because of her (not because he is one of the most talented driver on the grid) 😭 ///
ahaha another turkish anon here! actually it is kinda true but not because of dilara herself.
1-f1 isnt so popular in turkey, for example my classmates know a football player from germany's third league but they dont know anything about f1 drivers. f1 is gained their old popularity back after 2020 turkish gp. still not known as much as football. also turkish media doesnt care about f1 or football or basketball. they care drama, chaos and gossips.
2-when they started to date max wasnt a public face like today. he was known in just f1 community. after they started to date, people got curious because it was weird for us. a talented f1 driver's girlfriend was turkish. if he didnt date with dilara but still a turkish girl, people would talk about them too.
Yah it’s was the same for Daniel and Lando being on the news for dating Portuguese women, but if Luisa and Heidi were dating anyone else it wouldn’t be one the news because no one would care or even know who they are in the first place 😂

Oha! Yuh resmen! Girl, we are so similar. I used to love basketball and watched nba at night. Besides that I was in love with wnba and European womens basketball players, I loved making tribute videos for them lol. I was crazy for Euroleague too (I still follow EL).
Also I used to play basketball but I had to stop playing because of my knees. I even had a medal :(
I liked table tennis and I still enjoy playing it.
I like watching figure skating, not too much but I enjoy a lot.
Right now I really like watching volleyball and following players and teams.
Hey!! Sorry for replying so late to this 🙈
I wasn't able to win medals, unfortunately, but I really liked playing volleyball. Followed the Turkish Women's League for some time, but after COVID hit, my enthusiasm for many things, incluy sports, died.
If I was able to do a sports professionally, I would have been a figure skater, I think. I love watching it, pairs and singles alike, a lot. But as you know, in Turkey, ice rinks are rare and I don't think there are many coaches even if my family would have been able to afford it 😂
Hope you are having a good day/night 🤗

With OTE (Overtime Elite) League, Is the Basketball World ready for the establishement of its Academies as in Association Football?
Luka Doncic, the Dallas Mavericks $200 million, 4 year contract dollar star player went to a Real Madrid Basketball Academy at a young age and came out shooting the light outs in the most elitest league in the world, the NBA. In North America, particularly the USA, they have elite high schools, college basketball programs and NBA development league also known as the NBA G league, and with the G league, young players would be institutionally forced to play with amateur, or aging players with no future in the NBA, or Turkish Airlines EuroLeague. European football(soccer, or association football) have centuries old academies owned by the European footballing elite clubs such as Liverpool, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern and now with cash stacked giants, especially the likes of Paris Saint Germain, Manchester City and Chelsea. Thanks to the visionary exploits of Kevin Ollie, the former winning coach of the 2014 University of Connecticut Men's basketball NCAAM Champions, OTE was created out of a sheer desire to develop the future elite basketball stars and create a conducive environment where they could compete again each other; perhaps influence their game to the next level. Zion Williamson, the New Orleans Pelicans star player marketball value at Duke University was $7 million. This is the right environment where they will be able to market their images, and overall their value. Rapper Drake, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant and the world richest man, Jeff Bezos, invested in Overtime Elite.
From Martenzie Johnson's the Undefeated and Espn article:
Overtime Elite pro basketball league launching in September, will compensate high school-aged players
According to OTE president and commissioner, Aaron Ryan, some current players feel their high schools don't offer adequate academic and skills development and want to challenge current NCAA rules that don't allow them to profit from their likeness.
"This offering and opportunity not only gives you pro-caliber training and development in a facility that models and starts to simulate what life will be like in the NBA ... but it also provides a six-figure salary," said Ryan, who worked in the NBA for 22 years, including most recently as vice president of the NBA 2K league.
Each OTE player will earn at least $100,000 guaranteed for the season. The league also plans to compensate players through bonuses, equity in Overtime, and revenues from a player's name, image and likeness, the latter an NCAA issue that is currently being discussed in Congress.
Along with full health care benefits, OTE will offer up to $100,000 for players to use toward college tuition in the event a player doesn't go on to play in the NBA or other professional leagues.
In lieu of a traditional high school curriculum, the league will offer an academic program that it says will focus on "financial literacy, and media training."

The Ugandan Twitter Blogger Charles Onyango - Obbo says, "Africa’s richest man Aliko Dangote says barriers at borders making intra-Africa trade difficult, so most businesses prefer to ship from China than deal with the hassles at borders. Says Africa Free Trade would earn his businesses $12 billion a year. Dangote says today it takes 14 days to move goods to Ghana from Nigeria, which should ideally take 10-12 hours. Takes 10 days to move goods to Togo, which is just 270Kms to Lagos (Eliud Kipchoge could run there in less than half that time, I guess)." Products from the most important entrepreneurs on earth!
__Time to shine, and help others shine, too
Last month I gave a #ShoutOut to a few professions I admire most. Many of you added to my list, including one of the most important jobs on earth -- so important that not one of us would be alive today without these entrepreneurs…
The women and men who grow our food! And I don’t just mean our millions of smallholder farmers [mostly women] who help feed the African continent through their daily toil. I mean the emerging array of innovators in agritech, agbiotech, “Novel Farm Systems” and many many applications of fintech and AI designed to increase productivity, market links, capital access, and profitability in this critical industry.
With the rich land on our continent, there's just no reason why our governments should have to import tens of billions of dollars of food each year, [even though the balance of trade in at least a few countries is better than it used to be]. You all know by now that there’s a trillion+ dollar opportunity in Africa’s agrifood industry.
__But who's going to profit?
Our own agrifood Afripreneurs, innovators and industrious workers ... or others? Will jobs be created or lost with these new technologies? It’s really up to us to decide.
So! I have a little project for some of you. First, let me introduce you to this year’s GoGettaz Agripreneur Prize Top 14. These seven men and seven women agrifood entrepreneurs (ages 18-35) are going to compete online on Wednesday, 8 September at the AGRF Summit to win two prizes of $50k and four others of $2,500. Big congratulations to these innovators for getting this far, out of about 3,300+ registered applicants who started the process!

Now it’s your turn. Let’s build each other up, but also be candid. Take a look at the 3-minute pitches with the criteria the Generation Africa GoGettaz Prize judges will use:
# Innovation
# Business model
# Social and/or environmental impact
# Market potential and traction
# Founder and management team
I will NOT be a judge myself but will be announcing the male winner, and my friend Svein Tore Holsether of Yara International [one of the co-founders with me] will announce the female winner. The four social impact award winners will be announced by my dear friend, Dr Agnes Kalibata who’s now both President of AGRA and the Special Envoy for the UN Food Systems Summit.
Here's a chance to apply your learning. A lot of people will be studying your comments. Time to shine, and to help fellow #Afripreneurs shine, too.
Let’s talk.

One professional basketball player shares what it has been like for her and her BC Prometey teammates as their field of play shifts from Ukraine to Bulgaria.
Joyner Holmes has not been in Ukraine since Jan. 28. At 4 a.m. that morning, she left her apartment in Dnipro, a city in the country’s center, and was driven 2 ½ hours to an airport in Zaporizhzhia. Despite her lone American teammate Ariel Atkins urging her to bring more with her, Holmes packed just one big suitcase, mostly filled with clothes and shoes. She flew to Istanbul and then to Dallas.
“I have a lot of stuff in the Ukraine,” Holmes says. She believes she’ll get it back one day. When exactly, though, she isn’t quite sure.
Holmes, a 24-year-old forward, is in her first season with BC Prometey of the Ukrainian Basketball SuperLeague. She played in the WNBA the previous two seasons, but moved to Ukraine in August after being waived by the Aces at the end of June.
When Holmes and Atkins left the country in January, discussion about a possible Russian invasion had, in Holmes’s words, been “swirling in the air.” Still, she says, many of her teammates downplayed the tense climate and said it was “normal for them.”

BC Prometey players drape themselves in Ukrainian flags before a recent game in Bulgaria on Feb. 24.
“I think in the last 24 hours they’ve been really surprised,” Holmes says.
Prometey players woke up Thursday morning to alerts that Russia’s attack on Ukraine had begun by land, sea and air. One of the reported targets was Dnipro, the city where some of them call home. “In the blink of an eye this happens,” Holmes says. “The photos and videos, it’s insane to even look at.”
As the first day of Russia’s invasion wore on, Holmes was not stateside—she instead found herself playing for Prometey in front of fans in Bulgaria, against Turkish club CBK Mersin Yenisehir BLD. Many of her Ukrainian teammates were displaced from their homes with the conflict beginning less than 900 miles away.
When the stadium’s public address announcer called out Prometey’s roster, most of the players had Ukrainian flags draped around their shoulders. Atkins and Holmes held the flags in their hands. Those in attendance rose to their feet in applause as each of Prometey’s names were read. Yurkevichus. Datsko. Rymarenko. Nine Ukrainians in all. Players from CBK Mersin Yenisehir BLD stood across the opposite free-throw line and clapped. For two hours, the BC Prometey team hoped basketball would be a reprieve.
Standing alongside teammates she now considers family, Holmes watched as tears swelled in the eyes of those nearest to her. She choked up a bit herself, but gathered her team in a small circle inside the three-point arc and told them she was there for them. “I really love you guys and whatever happens tonight, we’ll go out there, play with our heart and give what we have.”
They broke the huddle, placed their Ukrainian flags on their bench seats, and then the game tipped off.
“They’re our friends, they’re our teammates, they’re our coaches,” Holmes says. “And they have no homes to go to right now.”
Holmes and Atkins, a four-time All-Defensive team guard for the Mystics, left Ukraine amid a break in Prometey’s schedule. While Holmes remained in Texas, Atkins went on to join USA Basketball in Washington, D.C., helping the United States qualify for the upcoming World Cup.
A WNBA spokesperson told Sports Illustrated on Thursday via a statement that the few players who were competing in Ukraine this offseason were no longer in the country. Guard Arella Guirantes of the Sparks had been with Budivelnyk Kyiv, while guard Leaonna Odom, who recently signed a training camp contract with the Mercury, was playing with Kyiv Basket.
“The league has also been in contact with WNBA players who are in Russia, either directly or through their agents,” the statement continued. “We will continue to closely monitor the situation.”
Holmes initially planned on flying back to her adopted home on Feb. 10 but pushed her flight back two days and later received a travel advisory that said Americans could not travel into the country at all.
Amid the geopolitical tensions, Prometey’s team president, Vladimir Mikhailovich Dubinsky, crafted an alternative plan. He paid to fly everyone to Bulgaria’s capital, Sofia, and transport them to nearby Plovdiv, where they would train and play. Holmes arrived last Friday.
Thursday’s game was the first of two legs in the EuroCup’s Round of 8. In the lead-up to the evening tip, Prometey’s coaches and officials provided regular updates to players on the situation back home. One Ukrainian player, who is the mother of a five-year-old child, tried to contact her son. Others tried contacting their parents. In Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, many users suffered internet disruptions amid reports of explosions in the region.
The Turkish club, featuring WNBA players DeWanna Bonner, Jasmine Thomas and Tiffany Hayes, jumped out to an early lead. Prometey trailed by nine at the end of the first quarter, 11 at halftime and eventually lost by 19. Before leaving the court, the team posed for a picture with 10 girls who had watched the contest. As the players walked off, two Ukrainian flags remained spread out in otherwise vacant seats behind the scorer’s table.
The team returned to their hotel and ate dinner before hearing reports around the first day of fighting and the toll it took.
“Can’t even put into words how proud I am of my Ukrainian teammates for drying up their tears and giving their best tonight,” Atkins wrote on Instagram afterward.
Ukrainian SuperLeague play has been suspended due to the Russian aggression, meaning Holmes’s international stint is nearing its conclusion. The two teams that met Thursday will play the second leg of the Round of 8 in Mersin on March 2. If Prometey wins and advances to the EuroCup quarterfinals, it is unclear where exactly it will play. If Prometey loses, Holmes, who recently signed a training camp contract with the WNBA’s Sun, will return to Dallas. But what about her Ukrainian teammates?
“Who knows what their next step is. That’s the scariest part,” Holmes says. “We played this game and then back to reality. Life still hits, and it’s still war now.”

Sports Competitions Cancelled; When Will Those Be Watched?
The world is facing a shutdown of sports competitions for the first time in decades with many clubs predicted to fail financially. As of April 17, the spread of the coronavirus pandemic worldwide resulted in more than 150,000 deaths and more than two million infections. As countries around the world reel from the outbreak's human and economic effects, sporting events around the globe have been especially hard hit. The most notable sporting event to be canceled was the Olympics in Tokyo 2020, now rescheduled for summer 2021. Globally, the sports industry is worth $480 billion to $620 billion, and worldwide markets will be taking a huge hit this year. Football: Sports Competitions in Europe
Tumblr media
Italy, which has now become one of the hardest hit countries because of the coronavirus, was still going ahead with Series A football games in the beginning but without the fans. As the virus grasped and spread across the country, the Italian government took increasingly desperate steps to halt the spread. The Government declared in early March that it would suspend all domestic games, a move that has not yet been lifted. Likewise, several matches were canceled by the German Football League and they pointed in a statement about what the financial implications could be for certain clubs. “The goal is still to finish the season by the summer - from a sporting point of view, but especially because an early end to the season could have consequences that could threaten the existence of some clubs." Spain is among the worst affected countries, with more than 180,000 diseases and almost 20,000 deaths. LaLiga and the Spanish soccer Federation (RFEF) have canceled football nationwide until further notice. Given the spread of the virus in the country, reopening football games will take a long time. Russia moved early to cancel football matches and other sporting activities, following the lead of other European countries such as France and the Netherlands. Originally, however, the suspension was to last until early April, as the coronavirus epidemic has escalated in Russia, the planned reopening date now is the end of May. Russian football is one of the top five leagues in Europe, according to the Moscow Times, and is losing more than $12 million per week, putting financial pressure on many clubs. It wasn't until March 20 when, due to the coronavirus outbreak, Turkish Youth and Sports Minister Muharrem Kasapoglu made the announcement to suspend their football, basketball and volleyball leagues. The country reported the first case on March 11, and the government has since worked rapidly to try to cover the virus. With broadcasting profits on stake and an imminent suspension of the English Premier League, football clubs in the United Kingdom are mulling if footballing could simply be a "TV event." With several football teams nearly at the end of the season, clubs are working together to figure out whether matches could be played at Wembley Stadium, behind closed doors, without spectators. In Europe, the Champions League and the Europa League could be left months from catching the coronavirus, said the UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin, earlier this month. Football: Sports Competitions in Arica Qualifying games for the 2021 African Cup of Nations have been postponed in Africa putting the competition for next year at risk. Early measures were taken by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as one of the largest footballing facilities on the continent although confirmed cases were small. “Following the growing concerns of the Covid-19 virus and the declaration by the World Health Organization (WHO) describing it as a pandemic, CAF has decided to postpone the following competitions until further notice,” CAF stated in a statement. Football: Sports Competitions in Asia The Chinese Football Association said all domestic games at all levels would be suspended on January 30, in a bid to curb the coronavirus outbreak. China was the epicenter of the virus at the time. Mid-March, the Asian Football Confederation voted to postpone all competitions until further notice after several member countries had postponed their domestic games or lockout imposed. “Following the imposition of further preventive measures and travel restrictions by several national governments due to the current Covid-19 pandemic,” the entity stated in a statement. “The Asian Football Confederation has decided today to postpone all AFC Cup 2020 matches until further notice.” Olympic Games
Tumblr media
The year's signature sporting event would have been the Olympics in Tokyo. Japan's last summer Olympics was in 1964, and has held two winter Olympics in between. Initially, reluctant to cancel the Olympics and only after national teams started withdrawing their competitors, the International Olympic Committee and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe agreed at the end of March to postpone the games until the summer of 2021. In history, the Olympics were postponed just three times, and only because of world wars: 1916, 1940 and 1944. Cricket
Tumblr media
The cricket world was gearing up for the new season of sports competitions when the coronavirus brought it to an abrupt halt. One of Pakistan, India and Bangladesh's most famous sports, the seasons were either postponed or cancelled in all three countries. The billion-dollar Indian Premier League has been rescheduled to April 15, but with India still in lockdown it remains uncertain when it will continue to be indefinitely postponed again. Likewise, in the knockout stages in late March, the Pakistani Super League was also cancelled after English cricketer Alex Hales, who had been in Pakistan for training, sent a warning that he may have contracted the coronavirus. In England, another cricket powerhouse, there will be no official cricket games in England or Wales until May 28 at the most primitive. Tennis
Tumblr media
In a statement the International Tennis Federation (ITF) said 900 tournaments were postponed. The London-headquartered governing body has also announced that it would furlough half of its staff as it strives to deal with the coronavirus fallout. In an identical move, the Women’s Tennis Association said, "The professional tennis season is now suspended through June 7, 2020, including the ATP Challenger Tour and ITF World Tennis Tour.” This was also in early April that one of the highest profile tennis tournaments, Wimbledon, was postponed for the first time since World War II, a decision that seemed inevitable. The 134th Championships would instead be performed in the summer of 2021. International tennis rankings have been frozen, too, before the season begins, which is still uncertain. Basketball
Tumblr media
Earlier this year, the death of basketball great Kobe Bryant in January sent shockwaves through the basketball world and other sports competitions beyond. His horrific death was now overtaken by incidents that influenced basketball, too. On March 11 the National Basketball Association (NBA) agreed to suspend the season after a positive coronavirus test by one of its members. They stated in a statement, “The NBA is suspending gameplay...until further notice,” the league told, “The NBA will use this hiatus to determine next steps for moving forward in regard to the coronavirus pandemic.” The Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) has postponed until further notice the start of the regular season, scheduled to begin on May 15. “As developments continue to emerge around the COVID-19 pandemic, including the extension of the social distancing guidelines in the United States through April 30, the WNBA will postpone the start of its training camps and the tip of the regular season originally scheduled for May 15,” the WNBA stated in a statement. Formula 1
Tumblr media
Formula 1 unfolded in a statement, “Our intention is to start the 2020 season at some point this summer. At this time no-one can be certain of exactly when the situation will improve, but when it does, we will be ready to go racing again.” At least nine Grand Prix so far have been cancelled or postponed with little sign that things are going to return to normal. On April 19, the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai, scheduled to take place. In addition, the Grand Prix in Azerbaijan slated to take place on June 7 has also been cancelled. Sports allow people to put their personal differences aside to achieve one goal, this is to win. The definition of transform (According to Cambridge Dictionary) is “to change completely the appearance or character of something or someone, especially so that that thing or person is improved:”1.   Sports has recently been a gateway for culture as well as society to be changed or transformed. This is due to many factors that are positive for both sides. Throughout the years, we have seen sports in the early stages dis-include people of colour and minorities. In today’s generation we have witnessed sports be dominated by people of colour and different ethnic backgrounds.  This is due to one factor, blindness. Media, players and fans have been blinded to the colour of the athlete’s skin, instead eye opened to the athlete’s remarkable performance, personality and most importantly their effect on society. Sports transforms culture and society through the uncovering of blindness. Firstly, Enes Kanter is forcing for a positive change, even if it means sacrifice. Secondly, Gender and Sexuality has pushed boundaries in all sports. Thirdly, the 1968 Black Power Olympics Protest ushered in a new era for sports, and Lastly, The NBA has increasingly grown more diverse in colour and places of origin.
Enes Kanter is forcing for a positive change, even if it means sacrifice. Enes Kanter has been a public enemy of his Country of Turkey since the year 2015. This is due to his choice of critiquing the government and Turkish President Erdogan.  For Erdogan, he has been alleged of abusing human rights and eroding press freedom. Enes Kanter has used his voice to shed light on a sensitive subject. “I have a voice, a very strong voice, because I play basketball in the NBA, and whenever I say something, it becomes a conversation, it becomes – it goes viral. So why not use it for a good cause? Use it to help people.”2 In this quote, Enes Kanter is explaining why he is choosing to speak out upon issues in the country of Turkey. He states how he can use his social position and public figure to bring attention to a cause that desperately needs help, and people are ignorant towards. I chose this quote because it perfectly embodies, how sports has been a transformative experience. In the earlier stages of NBA basketball, there was no such thing as an Enes Kanter type player. By this I do not mean how he plays or how tall is, rather a player using his social media presence to force for a positive change in something he believes in. As the NBA has evolved, we have more players reaching out and being bigger than basketball. Players like Kanter and Lebron James, upon others, have made speaking out on non-basketball related topics normal for other players.  This quote showcases Enes’ sacrifice because, by him doing what he is doing, he is causing things such as followers on social media unfollowing him, endorsements such as sneaker deals not wanting to sign him, and teams not wanting him to be on their roster due to the image and “problem” he is carrying. This ties into the idea of sports transforming culture through blindness as the concept revolves around an individual with a voice using it to educate others, who would be blind or uneducated about the conflict of the country of Turkey, and spreading awareness of a sensitive topic that needs help. In addition, Kanter is fearless of the Turkish government. Kanter’s father, Mehmet Kanter has been to jail once and his father also lost his job as a genetic professor. “He’s already been in jail one time and now the second time actually, Turkey is a little scared to touch him because of my fame, because they know if they put him in jail that we can put so much pressure here to Turkey. And they hate that.”3 This quote demonstrates Kanter’s fearlessness and relentless effort towards the problem. By this I mean, Kanter is willing to sacrifice not seeing his Mother and Father to the point where he has not seen them in 4 years (since the year 2015). By him doing these actions, he is putting his family, friends and loved ones in a dangerous position. However, this does not phase Enes Kanter because he knows his intention is for the greater good, and to force for a change. In the quote, he speaks about how Turkey is afraid to touch or do anything to the family of Kanter because ever since he got drafted into the NBA in 2011, he has been exposed to the world on a larger scale. Meaning anything he does, rather for positive or negative, the world still has monitored his actions. For example, if Kanter were to tweet something about how his country is treating his family, millions of people would view this tweet and know about the concept in the matter of seconds. Enes Kanter is sacrificing everything by forcing for a change in his country of Turkey, he is doing this by using his voice to shed light on the sensitive subject, and by him being fearless of the Turkish government and their President Erdogan.
Gender and Sexuality has pushed boundaries in sports. Gender and Sexuality in sports throughout history has been a highly sensitive topic of discussion, however due to multiple individuals, this has changed for the better.  Throughout time, the classification of gender/sexuality has been an issue that has been dealt with unjustly and ignorantly methods. People have been dis-included from participating in the sport they passionately love due to the league they participate in not adjusting to the common needs of the certain person. There has been a long history on “Biological Racism” in sports including the likes of early cases of Stella Walsh, and Dora/Heinrich Ratjen. Leagues had to find out a way to determine who was what.  Originally, for people to determine who was what gender the process was done by asking female athletes to drop their underwear, but a new method was developed by checking swabs of cheek tissue for chromosomes, women being XX, men XY. Maria Jose Martinez-Patino’s protest opened up the gates for people with unique cases. There are people with cases of the term of intersex, or disorders of sexual development. Maria Jose Martinez-Patino is one of the first individuals to challenge the boundary. She was a Spanish former hurdler. She is significant because she was dismissed from the Spanish Olympic team in 1986 for failing the gender test. “Patino was told in 1985 that she was an XY "man", but refused to quit or feign injury and spent the next three years fighting ignorance and ridicule to line up alongside women again. She got there in the end, proving her Y chromosomes were the product of a rare genetic syndrome.”4 Patino’s legacy will not be remembered through her position in the sport of hurdle, or what she has done for her country,  rather the amount of cases she has helped and the way she publicized the error in sex verification in sports. If it were not for this bump in the road in her career, Patino would have many more achievements and accolades to her resume. Patino’s attitude towards the situation did not only strengthen her arguments, but in addition it helped many other helpless victims who were at fault to the error in Sex verification. Sports had learned something from Patino’s case, they learnt that just examining someone based upon their personal parts does not define who they are and what gender they should be competing in. Rather other overlooked factors such as blood, sweat and hair strands can help in giving more accurate and fair conclusions. This demonstrates how Gender and Sexuality has pushed boundaries in sports because it gave us the concept of the inaccuracy of Sex Verification. Many people including Patino, have lost prime years due to being forced to sit out. However with cases such as this one, leagues in sports have learnt that conclusions cannot be solely based upon someone’s personal parts, but rather other factors. This shows how Sports is transformed through the uncovering of blindness due to Patino opening up doors for special cases that cannot solely be determined upon science. If Patino did not push for research, many people across the world would stay true to the common idea that men have their parts, and women are born with their parts, however Patino altered the common idea.  In addition, Semenya's case caused media to move into moral panic and overreact, which resulted in Biological racism. Caster Semenya is a South African middle-distance runner. She is a very successful one as she is a recipient of the 2016 Olympic gold medalist. When the young runner began, Semenya was junior champion in 2008. The teenager took 7 seconds off her personal best for 800m over the next 9 months. The IAAF felt "obliged to investigate". During the 800m final at the 2009 World Athletics Championships, it was leaked that the sport's governing body had also asked for a gender test. “A young girl with a rare condition, and an even rarer talent, was subjected to a medical examination by media. Semenya, now 24, returned to racing in 2010, and won silver medals at the 2011 Worlds and 2012 Olympics. But she has never run as fast as she did as an 18-year-old...”5 This quote exemplifies how the media was controlling and overreacting to a dominant strong women in sports rather than applauding her for her achievements. Attributes such as strong, super-fast, and aggressive are not traits that resemble the common build of female athletes, and that is the harsh truth. However, it should not have to be this way as allowing one to be able or have something that someone does not is similar to racism, or in this case Biological Racism. In this day and age, the world has evolved and changed so drastically, however media and news outlets have been restricted to the idea that female athletes are not allowed or not supposed to be looking or performing to the levels of male athletes. This is sad, as it gives a stereotype to female athletes who break this build due to their genetic misconceptions are mistreated and done unjustly. This proves how sports is a transformative experience as cases such as Semenya and Patino would have been done deals in the early 1900s, however with scientific research and the perseverance of these two, they pushed to break boundaries in the sport. Advances in Gender and Sexuality has pushed for change in sports. This can be attributed towards Maria Patino’s resistance opening up the gates for people with unique cases, and Semenya’s case causing media to overreact, which resulted in Biological racism.
The 1968 Black Power Olympics Protest ushered in a new era for sports. Before the 1968 BPOP, Blacks were still heavily treated with racism and discrimination. This protest occurred on October 16th, 1968. It involved Tommie Smith, who placed first in 200m race, followed by Peter Norman and John Carlos. When the two men walked up to the podium both Smith and Carlos removed their shoes, and wore beads and necklaces. During the national anthem, Smith and Carlos raised their fists, which were covered by black colored gloves. The second place runner, Peter Norman, did not raise his fist, but he did choose to wear a pin in support of the cause. The protest was meant to highlight issues such as poverty, segregation and racism. The 1968 BPOP, revolutionized protests in sports. During the times of 1968, protests were normal occurrences for human rights. However, this was not the case in sports. Back then, coloured athletes were only restricted to shutting up and playing the sport. Smith and Carlos introduced the idea of protest in sports on a wider scale. There have been earlier examples to the idea, however none have been more impactful and historically significant to the extent of the 1968 BPOP. With the events of the 1968 Olympics, we have seen various protests in sports. It seems like every year, there is an increasing amount of athletes choosing to protest towards what they believe in. These include: Colin Kaepernick's NFL protest, Carlos Delgado’s war protest, the Miami Heat paying tribute to Trayvon Martin, and  finally 1980 Olympic Boycotts, just to name a few. The 1968 BPOP have instilled this mentality towards athletes that, if you believe in something, do everything to make that a reality. This proves the 1968 Black Power Olympics Protest ushered in a new era because it allowed athletes to reach for concepts and dreams they envision in their heads, and do everything to make that a reality. “Those Olympics – since rendered "unofficial" – are remembered in large part for being the first to feature a political protest.”7 This quote is stating how the 1968 Olympics are unofficially the first true event of protest in sports. There have been earlier efforts by athletes, however this is really the first effective one that lasted upon generations. This ties into the concept of Sports transforming culture and society through the uncovering of blindness because it shows how one event of significant actions can jumpstart and have a lasting impact on athletes protest’s in today’s world.  In addition, the 1968 Black Power Olympics protest has brought balance and equality to sports. Before the 1968 BPOP, sports were heavily one-sided and any outstanding achievement of coloured athletes was either disregarded or viewed upon as lesser to white achievement. This was due to the era in which this protest took place, the human rights era. During this time, racism was at its peak and African Americans wanted change respectively. Human necessities such as public spaces, transportation and restaurants were divided or even un- granted towards black. The same went for sports. The same opportunity was not granted to black athletes, and sports leagues were predominantly filled with white athletes. “"We were just human beings who saw a need to bring attention to the inequality in our country," Smith said years later”8 In today’s day and age, sports leagues have athletes of all colour and ethnic background. Sports that used to have little to none coloured athletes are now dominating the sports currently. This demonstrates how sports is a transformative experience because it shows the actions of three men can expand the diversity and power shifts in sports based upon talent and pure ability rather than the colour of their skin. The 1968 Black Power Olympics Protest introduced a new era for sports. The 1968 BPOP did this by, revolutionizing the concept of protests in sports, and by creating balance and equality to sports.
The NBA has increasingly grown more diverse in colour and places of origin. From 1946 to 2013, only 26 NBA players were Canadian or were born in Canada. This is relevant because in this current season alone, 14 NBA players are Canadian born.6 That’s a little over half of the miniscule number of 26. This is important because basketball was not regarded to be a Canadians sport at one point in time. Canadians were restricted to sticking to the puck and ice and staying away from basketball. This was until the early 2000s came along and ushered in a new wave of influence. Canadian youth did not have the Canadian Chicago Bulls and a Michael Jordan to look up to until 1996, when The Toronto Raptors and Vancouver Grizzlies were established. Many Canadians NBA players credit the early Raptors with Vince Carter as a turning point to get into basketball. This is important because it demonstrates how Canadian youth in the 1990s and 2000s were blinded of the game of basketball, until they had that Vince Carter type player to guide them through the sport. Vince Carter influenced a whole generation of NBA players. “Vince Carter's victory in the 2000 NBA Slam Dunk contest forever changed the landscape of Canadian basketball.”9 Carter was the type of icon who can grasp the attention of young kids to influence them to play the sport. That’s where passion originates from, an influence influencing one to achieve greater things. Looking back in a retrospective view and wonder if there would be any Canadian players in the NBA without the likes of Steve Nash, Chris Bosh and Vince Carter. This can also show the positive effects of one looking up to an athlete. All of these young kids across the country of Canada looked up to Vince Carter and Steve Nash as they grew up and now look at them. 14 Canadians are actively on rosters, and in 2013 and 2014 in back to back years, Canadians were selected first overall. In addition, Carter had a major impact upon players not only just in Canada but around the world. “"Across the world, he had such a tremendous impact and it's because the way he did it — he was able to fly through the air in a poetic style. His mother said it was like 'ballet in the air.'"10 This quote shows how Vince made his impact on many individuals not just in Canada, but around the world. Before Vince Carter arrived on the scene, the Toronto Raptors were a mess. No one wanted to play for a country outside of the United States that was freezing cold for a majority of the seasons and had expensive taxes that deducted from the players’ salaries. However, Carter showed the temperature or circumstances of a given city do not dictate the passion and love for basketball. The Raptors have now become an attractive destination for free agents and are currently having the best winning run in franchise history. Stars of the caliber of Kevin Durant have voiced the interest to play for the Raptors. This exemplifies how sports is a transformative experience through the uncovering of blindness due to NBA player originally not wanting to play in Toronto, due to factors such as cold temperatures and salaries, however they were ignorant and miss-informed to the giant fan base and big market here.  As time has passed, so have the enriched desire in many places of the world for the love and passion for the certain sport.  The NBA has increasingly grown more diverse in colour and places of origin. This can be credited to Vince Carter influenced a whole generation of NBA players, and Carter having a major impact upon players not only just in Canada but around the world.
Overall, sports is a very transformative experience. Sports has the power to connect to everyone on different types of levels. Sports is transformative as it can convert an ordinary athlete such as Enes Kanter, and expand his role in politics, and overall be bigger than the certain sport. It gives opportunity for new advances in Gender and Sexuality, which allows the World to not assume but rather for Science and research to educate regarding the unknown. Sports allows athletes to strive for equity with regards to race, salary, religion, sex, age and sexual identity as we have seen with the 1968 Black power Olympics protest. Lastly, sports has the power to influence and expand to the point where the actions and talents of one man, Vince Carter, has had the power to influence 14 Canadian NBA basketball players. The wide variety of sports and the vast amount of individuals can be influenced by the actions or events of one person. By blindness being uncovered, it allows people to recognize change in sports. As humans evolve, so does the experience of sports, as it increasingly becomes more effective and revolutionary.
