I frequently create new TuTchT portraits. Last year’s portrait was mad elaborate and very well received. But to mark this 3rd anniversary of the day he left us, I’m going in the opposite direction (a decision I know he’s smiling about.) HARRY UZOKA REMEMBRANCE DAY No matter how much madness is going on in the world or in my personal life, I always look forward to those few days around the 11th of each month when I know I’ll sit for a number of hours at my drawing board and experience the smiles. laughter, self-reflection and inspiration that Harry always brought me… and continues to bring me. This practice accomplishes my main purpose of keeping Harry’s impressive body of work and image circulating through cyberspace, expanding his impact. HARRY UZOKA REMEMBRANCE DAY (Scroll forward and backwards for this month’s Harry posts.) Harry was my artistic muse for many years. From the first time I encountered his images at the earliest stages of his modelling career to the day my world was shaken by news of his murder, he remained one of the most important symbols of my overall life’s work & purpose: the exploration and deconstruction of the African-American Male archetype. And he remains. (He was also one of the most intellectually and spiritually curious young brothers I’ve met in my 10+ years working with male models of color, along with generously sharing the infectious effervescence he was widely known for.) . The modelling industry for young men of color is arguably the most temporal careers possible. The images, no matter how brilliant, are wiped away by the machine which churns out new manufactured tastes and trends several times a year. So one of the things I committed to do in honor of my brother Harry was to share his work on my social media pages each month on the 11th (the day he was taken from us.) This will insure that his powerfully affecting image will re-enter the cyber search engines and continue to inspire new viewers. His personal affect on those of us lucky enough to have interacted with him is, of course deeper and even more long lasting, but for one born to be seen, it is my way of extending the power of his purpose. . It was a good but “safe” week in terms of fashion. in the words of one fashion critic, the collections were in need of some kind of icing on the cake. Enter Ashish Gupta. His colorful, sparkling collection of sequined urban streetwear adorned with Swarovski crystals hit the runway with a daringly cast all-black collection of top models. (The under-representation of models of color was beginning to reach a boiling point.) . In the words of Nowfashion.com’s Nabil Aliffi, In a week in need of some icing, ��Ashish Gupta takes the cake at London Fashion Week , and he is having it by the pound.” And our brother Harry, who’s career was about 3 years into its skyrocketing trajectory, was selected to walk in the venerated “opening” slot, an honor made even more noteworthy since a male model is rarely selected to open shows featuring majority female models. .
