Nuance is dead apparently so I’ll be very very blunt. After I got SA’d (for the first time) I had a slutty streak that didn’t help matters. Since I didn’t feel one way or the other about sex I used it for various purposes, I was very liberal with my body.

After I had one mind blowing experience with a woman I too thought I’m magically cured and good to have tons of healthy sex, I too participated in orgies and such and found myself dissociating. I didn’t want to admit to myself that I’d be ‘broken’ forever so I kept pushing it.

I have seen how it affects the people I’ve been with, too. From denial “but you liked when we were doing x/y/z” to dread “omg did I do something horrible?!”

What I did was harmful, for sure, but it was a kind of self harm born out of desperation. I did it to myself, I had a choice to walk away, and I didn’t. Half the time I didn’t even know I had that choice and I blamed other people for forcing me.

I am fine now, my mistakes are how I learned to know myself better and be at peace with my sexuality.

I know I’m not alone in this because it was another survivor who eventually convinced me to seek professional help. And I see a lot of people relating to astarions flavour of trauma in a very specific way, so I don’t think I’m being delusional.

When y’all write things like “of course astarion would hate the foursome, his story was concluded at the graveyard scene, we didn’t need to see that” it makes me think that well yes, maybe you did. Maybe it’s good that you did see it in a video game in fact, so you could learn how real people deal with these things from a fictional setting.

The graveyard scene is incredibly clear in stating that it’s the beginning of his story. Now he’s gonna fuck up a bunch. And I’m not sorry to throw this out there but no tav’s cunt/dick is good enough to cure 200 years of trauma

Homelander raped Becca in the show.

That is not a question, it is not up for debate. It is a fact of the show and I wish people would stop being disgusting about it.

I know some take issue with how it's portrayed but I'm actually glad it was portrayed in such a way that Becca is angry and terrified, but she doesn't look like she was hurt physically by him. That detail is important because sexual assault is often viewed as this inherently violent and forceful thing that requires someone end up bruised and battered because of it, but that's simply not true. Nor is that stereotype fair or helpful to victims that experience rape that isn't violent.

What we do see from Becca are psychological scars which are always there. The way she reacts and didn't talk to her husband. She shut down. She didn't fight back because what chance did she have? And in corporate settings especially, rape is often more insidious and subtle than forceful. When she's desperate and asking to be moved by Dr. Parker, and he tells her, the victim, that their best guess is that 'Homelander will get bored and move on', those words visibly destroy her because she has already experienced the exact opposite of this.

Homelander had her captive and unable to fight back for 3 hours. And he didn't get bored or move on.

There are situations where it happens in ways that make victim question and gaslight themselves about whether or not it really happened, when it did. And I actually like that The Boys portrayed this in this way because it shows us that the scars or pain aren't always visible. Most victims of any abuse take active steps to hide their pain. Especially when the world will look for excuses to belittle that pain and the victims themselves.

Especially when the rapist is extremely powerful.

We don't need to see a graphic rape to know it happened. And rape isn't always violent, nor should it be portrayed that way. For fuck's sake, Starlight was also assaulted and we know definitively that it was insidious and done through blackmail instead of violence. Since Ryan apparently isn't enough proof.

This stigma needs to stop. It happens more than one way so stop debating it.

Trauma Porn vs Representing Black Struggle in IWTV

TW: Domestic Violence (Focus) Rape (mentioned 1x)

Spoilers for the IWTV AMC Series

I think a lot of the distraught or incredibly positive reactions to Episode 5 of IWTV’s ending from black fans is because of the noticeable lack of genuine representation of black IPV let alone black queer people facing IPV at all. So not only was the scene without a trigger warning and absolutely out of nowhere (with of course the obvious foreshadowing and Lestat’s abusive behavior setting it up) but it was something that has barely been done for mainstream genre TV.

So as a black fan, seeing violence towards black people (trauma porn) is certainly not new to me... but seeing black queer people’s stories focus on IPV is something that I haven’t seen. It leaves me incredibly conflicted in ways that cannot be transcribed.

Genre TV, media in general, and even reality has an obsession with whitewashing (pun unintended) IPV towards black people unless it’s specifically meant to degrade us and utilize racist stereotypes. Rarely ever does IPV towards queer black people get spoken about in real life, let alone in fiction. So for a story to just be for real for a hot minute about that topic is both disturbing and jaw dropping.

I oscillate between “I can’t believe they would ever put this on TV” and “I’m so glad that they made this a plotline because nobody talks about this,”. IPV perpetrated by white people towards their black partners especially from a historical context is not talked about. And it certainly is not the focus of period pieces or literature as often as it should be.

This is even being taken away from us TODAY in history books; centuries of rape and domestic violence from the slave trade to Jim Crow is being censored RIGHT NOW. This is not isolated behavior.

And to see white IWTV fans sidestep this entirely back during the final stretch of season one to complain that having Lestat (who canonically abused Louis in other ways) assault Louis somehow ruined LESTAT’S character and THEIR SHIP. While completely sidestepping what themes they were intending and got across (you know like genuine media literacy) and the onscreen brutalization that happened without warning is disgusting.

Being able to cherry pick quotes and argue about whether or not slapping is “DV” is not only gross but it’s just not media literacy. That’s literacy... like good job bestie you can read! But it’s certainly doesn’t mean you have the range or comprehension to understand the intended themes of Episode 5 at all. And until white people begin to understand the nuances of being a black person being abused by a white person who holds power over you, it’s going to continue being out of reach.

It’s one thing to dislike it’s inclusion, because I also agree. But I’ve noticed that The Great Lestat Discourse TM has become the discussion rather than the perspective of how white supremacy aided in perpetuating domestic violence and the choice to show gory and unflinching physical abuse without a trigger warning.

White fans being disingenuous and asking Louis to fade into the background until Lestat (the white character) becomes the focus for TVL. While constantly mocking and ignoring the concept of IPV towards black people makes the point for me as to why this was an interesting and purposeful direction to head in. IPV is so ignored that when IWTV includes it, fans went out of their way to argue whether or not their favorite white boy would DARE TO DO THIS, and not why the writers did this and what they were attempting to say. IPV and queer victims of abuse are so ignored that after this happened people started making posts talking about APOLOGIZING TO A FICTIONAL LESTAT for writers “slandering” him! Discussions about abuse in interracial relationships during Jim Crow are so far ignored that people started to publicly doubt that actual domestic violence in interracial relationships existed at all! So badly that the writers had to come out and say that they wouldn’t make Louis “not the victim” when recontextualizing episode 5.

And what did you do?

Video evidence of dead women unclothed from the waist down meant nothing, you insisted on seeing them raped on camera or else claiming atrocity propaganda. The stupid questions revolving around Homelander's rape of Becca are really starting to grate me.

Why, just why do people want or feel they need to see a violent rape happen onscreen to confirm that Homelander is a rapist??

He explicitly states he doesn't force himself on 'his own kind' to Maeve, but the logical answer is that none of his other victims fucking survived. Whether the encounter or to tell the tale. We already know Homelander has a problem with his strength when he's turned on and what he's capable of, it's a miracle Becca and Madelyn did survive at all. He has probably killed normal people who did actually consent too.

And maybe the only reason Becca didn't die? Was because she went fucking MISSING.

And even if that weren't the case and there were more victims that kept their mouths shut for very fucking obvious reasons if not just being paid off and forced to sign an NDA by Vought. I don't understand why anyone would question why Becca had a kid and not the others.

feel free to skip if you're uncomfortable. I saw your post about the things you don't support in writing but what are your thoughts on things like rape-fic or CNC?

First and foremost I think I will never write them or read them. I am a rape-survivor and though I have managed my trauma well I am not in a place where I want to see or interact with it in literature or media.

In terms of whether or not they're ethical? That's a grey area. Context matters pretty heavily when depicting those topics and there is definitely a way people do it that is toxic and perpetuates harmful misconceptions about sex and consent.

To a point you can argue it's like BDSM, the people creating and engaging with these scenarios are adults writing about other adult characters and they retain control over the fantasy so there's no actual consent being violated. Though I certainly think there is a conversation to be had about why these fantasies are so prevalent, especially among women. There's also an issue with the predator characters sometimes being intentionally or unintentionally racially coded but that requires its own separate conversation. It also makes a difference if the writer is identifying with the predatory role vs the victim role which is also it's own conversation but I think for the purpose of this ask I'll focus mainly on female consumers who identify with the victim as that is the most widespread scenario in fanfic and the "romance" genre.

Take this with a grain of salt, I haven't really done a lot of research into this so most of this is speculative and based on conversations I've had with women who enjoy this kind of content. I could be way off in my observations but I noticed common threads in all of my conversations.

I think genres like smutty "bodice rippers" written by and for women don't have widespread popularity for no reason and the reason is rooted in internalized misogyny. It's a symptom of generations of women feeling ashamed of their sexuality. The main appeal of these kinds of narratives seems to be that the female protagonist has little to no control and is therefore not responsible for initiating or perusing any kind of sexual gratification. She remains passive rather than active, through that passivity she can retain a sense of moral purity and even innocence. Why do those things matter? Because historically and even in some sense currently, that is the measure of a woman's worth.

I've spoken to women who say that they inexplicably feel a sense of guilt if they take a proactive role in the bedroom and I find that more than a little troubling tbh.

In most of these stories the female protagonist is not given power because power would mean she could be held responsible for her own debauchery. It opens her up to criticism, slut-shaming and accusations of "asking for it."

In summary I don't think there's generally anything wrong with kink but I think it's beneficial to examine where the kink comes from and why a particular fantasy or kink is widespread. Fiction is shaped by reality and consumers of fiction are obligated to some extent to understand what they are consuming and why they are consuming it. At the end of the day all I ask is that people engage critically and be willing to unpack whether what their consuming is in itself harmful or a symptom of a more widespread harmful ideology.

As much as I do not want to see any vinxelend sex scenes (married times when they are both adults) I do think there is a missed opportunity in exploring how uncomfortable that would be in regards to intimacy (and why I actually find it fully realistic that they didn’t do it until after getting married and making clear that they fully trust each other)

Vin spent her entire youth avoiding getting raped, especially by noblemen like elend. Elend on the other hand is the only cosmere protagonist I can think off who has sexual trauma, from an event where he wasn’t even the victim (straff making his literal child rape a woman who he then had murdered is one of those plot points that get increasingly disturbing the more you think about it)
