Name: Fútbot
Debut: Mario Strikers: Battle League
Today we will be talking about famous bad game Mario Strikers: Battle League! I do not care about sports games even if they do contain Shy Guy, but geez, I'm sorry to those of you who do. You just can't catch a break.
But maybe there's hope? Maybe a brand new character, unique to this game, could spark some intrigue? Surely a one-off robot in a Mario game would at least appeal to ME, right? RIGHT?
Wrong! I think Fútbot is stupendously mid. Note that I called it a "robot". Not even a "funny robot". That's how you know I'm serious! As a design, Fútbot has some interesting things going on, I suppose. A propeller for a lower body, a puppety mouth, and a glowing sphere of a "tongue". But it just doesn't do it for me! My favorite part of this character is the cute name.
Tumblr media
Fútbot simply feels like a mascot and nothing else. This could be the mascot for anything. An antivirus software. A local TV channel that shows both football and The Big Bang Theory reruns. A week-long STEM summer camp for 8-12 year olds. Fútbot could be anything, and so it feels like nothing.
Tumblr media
Fútbot is here to help you and give advice, and I suppose I do like that they made a new character for the role! I have been hard on Fútbot, but I would have NOTHING to say about this game without its presence. I would rather it be here! I also think it's neat that Fútbot is a representative of the Galactic Strikers Federation, implying a bit of new Outer Lore to Mario's universe. I COULD say that it makes sense it wouldn't look like a Mario character, since it's from a galactic organization, not limited to Mario's planet... but we know very well that there are Mario enemies all throughout Mario's galaxy and beyond! No excuse!
There is one great thing about Fútbot. Something I've been saving for the very end. Let's look closely.

These eyes. Bright, glowing cyan, with concentric rings within. They're not an exact match, but they absolutely bring to mind...

“Super Mario Odyssey Frenemies”
My partner bought me Super Mario Odyssey at the beginning of this week and I'm more than halfway through the main story with a lot of the kingdoms 100% (for now). I'm addicted. I should be drawing better things but I need to get these cuties out my system!!

Having always wanted a fly pokemon more than any other kind of thing for a pokemon, my measure of a good video game/anime/cartoon fly design is immediately “how much would I accept this if it were the only fly Pokemon.”
Tumblr media
For example cutiefly is a 10/10 Pokemon but since it’s based on a fly that mimics a bee and subsequently evolves to look even more like a bee it is unfortunately only like a 2/10 fly Pokemon. I’m sorry cutiefly. In a reversal of this the “stingby” enemy in Mario games is USUALLY a bee but Mario Odyssey added an “urban” variant that would be my 10/10 fly Pokemon:

Name: Urban Stingby
Debut: Super Mario Odyssey
Oh my goodness! Oh, joyous day! I don’t even know how to begin this post, I’m just so happy. We’re finally (truly) covering Odyssey, ya see! And not only that, with a BUG!
Odyssey is... dang, it’s just the mosquito’s knees. I think it might be the best game I’ve ever played. The creativity of Super Mario Land 2, on a grand 3D scale, and even allowing us to play as weird Mario enemies?! Amazing! Of course, one of the great things about Super Mario Land 2 is all the bugs. And look! Bugs!

LARVA! I love a larva! And these larvae are simply flawless. Like the simple, featureless blobbiness of a bee larva, now with big, glowy, hypno-eyes, always a wonderful feature! But these are no bees, these are grade A, bona fide maggots. And I feel like that’s something you don’t see enough of in the media. Caterpillars are already the only larvae most people seem to care about, but where’s the respect for the little baby janitors who clean up so much of the nastiness we don’t want?

But these maggots don’t just turn into any flies, they turn into big poofy mosquitoes! Real mosquito larvae are actually aquatic and don’t look much like a maggot at all, but that’s okay because here we get two iconic dipteran stages for the price of one. Love those real-deal compound eyes! And that proboscis looks... incredibly painful. I guess they probably made them so puffy to make them less scary, because I have no doubt that this thing could easily kill a human with a bite alone. Do the people of New Donk City just kinda... deal with this? Turn the wrong corner and have to deal with giant death mosquitoes and actual straight-up tanks?

As the name implies, these are a variation of the Stingbies from Super Mario 3D Land. The pointy part being on the face sure does make a lot more sense for a mosquito, huh? Silly Stingby. Real bees wield spears!
Sadly, Urban Stingbies are some of the few non-capturable enemies in the game... but I guess it’s the price to pay for perfection.
Oh yeah, the larvae just poof into adult form instantly. No pupa required! This is the next step in evolution. I’m going to miss pupae, though. I don’t know about you, but my pupal stage was probably the best time of my life.
